Program Notes
"Not far from this village, perhaps about two miles, there is a little valley or rather lap of land among high hills, which is one of the quietest places in the whole world... Certain it is, the place still continues under the sway of some witching power, that holds a spell over the minds of the good people, causing them to walk in a continual reverie. They are given to all kinds of marvelous beliefs, are subject to trances and visions, and frequently see strange sights, and hear music and voices in the air." -Washington Irving, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Inspired by my childhood home and the region of New York where the American author Washington Irving lived and set many of his stories, including The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, I created an homage to the historic character of the area. As a child, I was captivated by the story of the Headless Horseman, and my imagination fuelled many escapades. Sleepy Hollow Twilight reflects memories of childhood play in this magical region, through mysterious themes and eerie textures. An otherworldly tapestry of sound parallels an imaginary journey, a childhood quest for adventure. The unusual harmonies evoke a moody twilight in Sleepy Hollow, as the sunlight diffuses away in the Hudson River mist, to let the moon rise again. Duration Ca. 5:00
