Soaring Through Glass Ceilings Osu making strides for women entering aviation field By Trinity July

“If I want to do something, and my heart’s set on a certain career, I’m not going to change my career option just because there’s more men in the field,” said professional pilot senior Karen McCloy. McCloy was speaking on her place as a woman in the aviation field, which is predominantly men. McCloy is set to graduate in May 2021, has finished her required flight hours, and has been a flight instructor for 10 months. She is living proof that your gender has no impact on your ability to touch the sky. However, McCloy is only one of a small group of women (in comparison to the number of men) enrolled in the professional pilot program at Oklahoma State University. This issue is reflective of how few female pilots there are in the industry. According to Women in Aviation International, only approximately 8% of commercial pilots are women. McCloy said she believes that more women are enrolling each year, however. “Since I started in the program in 2018,

I’ve noticed each year more and more women are enrolling,” McCloy said. Last year, OSU’s professional pilot program placed an enrollment limit of 75 students, as well as requiring second applications. The stricter enrollment requirements have made students more grateful for their admission, as well as more determined to keep their spot, which has led to a somewhat competitive environment. In many situations, this competitiveness could lead to a toxic and misogynistic environment. However, this is not the case for OSU according to Grace Cowherd, a professional pilot junior. She said that the competition among the students is mostly friendly, and doesn’t involve any sexism. “I’ve never been in a situation where I was super uncomfortable or anything like that,” Cowherd said. “[The male students] want to help us as much as they can...We haven’t really had any trouble.” Cowherd said that many of her male friends in the program joined OSU’s Women in Aviation group to show their support. Should the 25th amendment be used to remove Trump from office? O’Colly staff report The mob attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6 has caused many people to consider whether President Trump should be removed from office. The O’Colly asked two Oklahoma State students from both political parties this question: Should the 25th amendment be used to remove Trump from office even though his term is practically over?

Ellen Slater (Democrat) There is no excuse for the Capitol attacks on January 6. As Trump was impeached for the second time, it is apparent he needs to be removed from office, despite only having six days left in his term. It became clear that Trump was not fit for office due to inciting the Capitol attacks last week and his inability to respond to the situation as it took place. Not removing Trump from office sets the precedent for the future that instances like this are OK. The U.S. is better than this. We need to hold future leaders to higher standards. Letting him continue, even if it’s just for six days, is putting idolization of a single man over the good of the country. If the leaders of the US genuinely care about our country, the Senate will take action to remove the president from office.

Michael Baughman (Republican) No, it should not be invoked. Most people want the 25th amendment to be used because the president “incited” a riot and “told” the crowd of his supporters to storm the capital. That is a false notion and anyone who says that he did is lying. The full speech he gave is open to the public on youtube. At the beginning the president stated, “We signed a beautiful law that if you hurt our monuments you go to jail for ten years”. It is completely illogical to tell a crowd you get ten years for vandalizing monuments then go tell the same crowd to vandalize a monument. Meanwhile, Maxine Waters told people “If you see anyone from that cabinet form a crowd around them and you push back on them”? The double standard is so clear, Maxine gets a free pass because she has a D next Alicia Young to her name.

Dually Impeached

President Trump Makes History As the First President to Ever Be Impeached Twice By Amelia Jauregui

The United States is feeling Déjà vu as President Donald J. Trump is being impeached for a second time in just over a year. The House of Representatives charged Trump with “incitement of insurrection,” meaning he was being impeached for the unlawful behavior against the Capitol, seen during the riots on January 6, 2021. Lawmakers then voted and approved to go forth with the impeachment process, as the vote ended up as 232-197. With this 232-197 vote, all the Democratic seats, as well as 10 Republicans voted in favor of the impeachment. It is now in the hands of the Senate, where a trial will be held right around the time President-Elect Joe Biden is inaugurated into office. However, what seems to be a reoccurring question to citizens around the country, is ‘what is the point of a second impeachment when Donald Trump only has days left in office?’ According to a New York Times article published on Jan 14, “impeachment is one of the weightiest tools the constitution gives Congress to hold government officials accountable for misconduct and abuse of power.” Additionally, the biggest effect impeachment would have would be disqualifying

Soaring Continued from pg. 1 Not every female student has only had positive experiences with male students, though. Tara Serocki, a professional pilot junior, once endured an awkward interaction with one of her male peers. “I was very good friends with this one guy and he was in the pilot program as well,” Serocki said. “I came to him, you know, stressed out about student loans and financial aid and all that stuff... We were at the same

Trump from ever holding a position in office again. Because Trump has only completed one term as President, there have been rumors of running again in 2024 for a second term. Though if officially convicted, in Article I, Section 3, Clause 7 of the Constitution, he could be held from holding “any office of honor, trust or profit under the United States.” With a two-thirds majority of votes needed by the

level at the time too, and he said, ‘Oh, you know, you don’t need to worry about that. Like once we get married I’ll take over your student loans, you don’t have to do anything and I’ll be able to fly you wherever.’ And I [said], ‘Listen, dude, we’re not married. I don’t really like you that much.’ And also, at this point in time, he is still stuck in stage one. And I’m more than halfway done with the program.” Other than interaction, though, Serocki said she hasn’t faced any other forms of misogyny in the program. Beyond the student body, there are significantly fewer female faculty members in the space and aviation department than males. Though the male

Senate for a convicted impeachment trial, it is unsure what will actually happen to President Trump. As the days go on, more questions are being asked as the United States is truly witnessing history in the making. Never before seen actions are happening daily and it is leaving a majority of people confused. Questions like “how will an impeachment trial work as Donald Trump is no longer in

members with mentors who are in the job field to provide a support system. Serocki said that she believes the disproportionate amount of women in the program isn’t because they aren’t being admitted—it’s because they aren’t applying. This could be because the stigma that piloting is “a man’s job” turns some women away from the field. Serocki said that it was hard entering this field because of the lack of women pilots in the public eye. “I didn’t grow up around aviation,” Serocki said. “I never realized it until I came to school, but I didn’t have any women role models to look up to or like reach out to. It was all guys. And like

recently, like, I’ve been looking back on that. And it’s kind of crazy because like, you know, you see someone and you’re like, ‘Oh, I want to follow them.’“But if all girls just see white guys in the airlines, they’re not going to be as willing to do that because, you know, it’s not, ‘socially acceptable’ or something like that.” However, the amount of women becoming interested in aviation is constantly growing. The Women in Aviation group is reaching out to get more potential women interested in flight and provide those already enrolled with the resources they need to take off. News.ed@ocolly.com

OSU Shuts Out SIUE, Crushed Little Rock

Image Taken at the Oklahoma State Cowboy Wrestling vs Oregon State Beavers, Sunday, January 10, 2021, Gallagher-Iba Arena, Stillwater, OK. Bruce Waterfield/OSU Athletics

By Marcus Trevino It wasn’t even close. Oklahoma State was the heavy favorite

in both duals, and it was obvious why as it defeated its opponents by a combined margin of 70 points. But there were still plenty of exciting matches in the double header against SIU-Edwardsville and Little Rock. Kaid Brock narrowly escaped the upset from Saul Ervin after trailing 7-5 with 20

seconds remaining in the round. The seventhranked 141-pounder in the nation was able to get a late takedown and win 12-7 with riding time. There were several question marks at the 157-weight class with Wyatt Sheets’s absence. Jalin Harper and Daniel Manibog each received one loss in last week’s

dual meet. Harper was able to provide relief today though, upsetting the 11th-ranked Justin Ruffin. SIU-Edwardsville nearly dodged the shutout in the heavyweight round as Austin Harris defeated Colton McKiernan in overtime. McKiernan looked like the better wrestler nearly the entire round, but Harris

was able to hold him off. This was Harris’ second consecutive overtime victory. Coach John Smith tied former Rider coach Gary Taylor as the third most winningest coach in NCAA Division I history with the 38-0 victory over SIU-Edwardsville. But Smith’s meeting with Taylor was brief as he passed him four hours later after OSU defeated Little Rock 36-4. While Harper was able to fill in at 157, Andrew Nieman struggled for a second straight week while filling in for Daton Fix at 133. Nieman lost to Paul Bianchi 10-2, which briefly gave the Trojans a lead in the dual. But OSU dominated the rest of the dual led by outstanding performances from Dustin Plott and Dakota Geer. Plott pinned OSU transfer Triston Wills, picking up the first fall of his collegiate career. Dakota Geer oneupped Plott by executing two takedowns and a tech fall. He outscored his two opponents 39-9.

ACTIVE FAITH! (Part #2) “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.” (Heb.11: NIV) These Ancients of the Bible were commended for their faith. “Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.” (Gen.6:9 NIV) He believed God existed and God rewarded those who diligently sought him. His faith brought immediate action. (Heb.11:8) He did not put the building of the ark on a long “to do” list. It took 100 years to build. During that time he constantly spoke of the judgement that was coming. (2 Pet.2:5) This was the situation in Noah’s day. How about our day? Do we believe God exists? To so many, God is something of the past; one you give an hour or so every Sunday morning, because of tradition, but he does not truly count

for much in life. So this moves us to turn to things that have only temporary pleasure, and build our life activities around them. Noah and others mentioned in Heb. 11, were looking for something lasting, something God had promised. They realized they were strangers and pilgrims; living here for a short time. They were living for something better. (Heb.11:13-16) It is so worthwhile to read and reread the New Testament and consider what was the hope of the early Christian leaders; they passed on to all the believers. It was not centered in this present life. They were “running a race;” living a life centered in the example of Jesus himself, and in those who walked with him during his earthly life. We can do the same; live for the eternal, present ourselves to Christ, and let him use us to bear lasting fruit.

sports Cowgirls Lose to West Virginia In Sloppy Game By Jacob Sturm Sloppy. It’s the only word describing the start to the Oklahoma State women’s basketball team’s 67-59 road loss against West Virginia on Saturday afternoon. In the first 3:29, the teams combined for eight turnovers and two points. The Cowgirls didn’t score in the opening 4:13. OSU coach Jim Littell said the problem happened before the game. “That was the way we practiced last night,” Littell said. “It was just a mirror image of how we practiced. So, it didn’t start with the beginning of the game. It started in our preparation.” When OSU did score its first basket on a Kassidy De Lapp layup, it didn’t just cut into the deficit. It evened the score. West Virginia (10-2 overall, 4-2 in Big 12) struggled against the stifling OSU defense all afternoon, forcing bad passes and hurrying offensive possessions. The Cowgirls struggled just as much. Despite the slow start, OSU (9-4, 5-2) finished the first quarter trailing the Mountaineers 15-13. The start to the second half couldn’t have been more different. OSU pushed its lead to 42-30, seemingly having the momentum. The Cowgirls didn’t commit a turnover in the 12-5 run while maximizing the West Virginia mistakes. Then West Virginia rallied with an 11-0 run, taking the momentum while closing the gap. “We got some stops, and it led to some things offensively,”

Littell said. “We made some shots, and it was spread out a little bit, but then it disappeared in a hurry… You got to realize when you get up by 10, now you really got to play hard, you really got to compete to take that to 15, and we didn’t do it.”

The Cowgirls exchange baskets in the fourth quarter but couldn’t overcome the Mountaineers’ momentum. The turnovers piled up at the wrong time, too. OSU turned it over three times in the final 2:40, and West Virginia scored seven

points off those mistakes. “These kids got a target on them when you start 5-0, and we’re not handling it right now,” Littell said. Sports.ed@ocolly.com
