Disney Magic not so Magical The experience of Laura Singletary By Sheyenne Mitchell-Brown Laura Singletary received the internship of a lifetime, or at least that’s what Disney led her to believe. Singletary, 24, applied for the internship in February of 2019 to expand her education in engineering and management. She was told not to expect a reply for months after she completed the application, but two weeks later she was interviewed, and by April she had accepted her position as an intern at Disney World. In her interview, she told the company where she wanted to be: engineering. But she learned quickly that what you want is not always what you get. “What I was hired on for was something I honestly didn’t want to do,” Singletary said. Foodservice. Assigned to work and serve the visitors of Disney World’s Animal Kingdom, Singletary decided to make the most out of a poor situation. She got in contact with the parks’ top engineers, or Provided by Laura Singletary Disney named Imagineers, Singletary poses in Star Wars themed park in Disney World and asked if they would let her

shadow them. They agreed. “Multiple times a week, every week, I got to go help with coding in Pandora. And got to do actual engineering with their department,” Singletary said. Singletary said Disney is extremely welcoming to this type of learning, and all employees have access to a hub where they can find the contact information for people working in high-level jobs. So, off she went after every eight to 10-hour shift at her assigned food service job to meet with the Imagineers that would teach her the practical skills for her future career. “It was a really cool opportunity.” The long hours serving food were necessary. With the college program, Singletary said, they had to pay out of their paychecks for rent to live on-site, which was required of them. Rent was $150 a week, Singletary said, and that money bought her a threebedroom apartment to share with six other women and a room to share with one other woman. See Disney on pg. 3

Shorthanded Cowboys fall to No. 2 Baylor at home

It’s difficult to win with only eight players. Especially against the No. 2 team in the country. The Cowboys found that out the hard way today. It was announced OSU would be without both Cade Cunningham and Rondel Walker today, and their absences were certainly felt. The Cowboys made it a game for about 29 minutes, but then a massive Baylor run put the game out of reach, ultimately the Cowboys lost 81-66. “We competed well, it was really just the run that we didn’t do too well stopping,” Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe said. “That was really the difference in the game.” There were a lot of things

stacked against the Cowboys this afternoon. They faced a really good team after having not been able to practice for nearly 10 days. The team practiced yesterday with only seven scholarship players, and

Cunningham was just now cleared today. He was in no shape to play today, so Boynton’s message to his team was simple: no no-shows. “With Cade out, other

guys had to have big games,” Moncrieffe said. “I know whether I score a lot or I score a little, I have to dominate the glass.” See Shorthanded on pg. 4

Crazy customer story

Continued from pg. 1

To pay for a special Birthday treat, Singletary picked up an extra shift at the Animal Kindom bakery for 6 a.m. At 7 a.m. special customers who qualified for the Extra Magic Hour before the park officially opened rolled in to buy breakfast to start their day. One woman served by Singletary ordered a yogurt. She got her yogurt, but she was not pleased because she had not asked for blueberry yogurt. She complained to Singletary who tried to make the moment right by offering her their only other option of mixed berry yogurt. The woman steps aside, looks at her yogurt and throws it at Singletary. The woman was followed out of the bakery by security.

“We shared a closet, shared a bathroom with the girl, we even had to share a dresser,” Singletary said. “It was a very interesting situation.”

“It was a really cool opportunity” Their situation was tight. And for months they slept just three feet away from each other. Singletary said that there were other apartments with slightly larger rooms that would squeeze in three people per room by adding a bunk bed. You could live with up to nine other people, she said, in an apartment that would normally only live three or four people. For now, due to COVID-19, the internship program is canceled. But Singletary said that if it were to open again, the company should focus on the mental health of the students it hosts. “We work very stressful

jobs, get yelled at basically every day because it’s Disney, and then you’re putting us in a sardine room and paying really high rent,” Singletary said. Singletary said they should look at lowering the number of people in each apartment and give the students more flexibility in which job they choose to work instead of giving them no say at all.

Nonetheless, Singletary said she does not regret this experience. She holds on to the good days. She has a card that hangs on her wall given to her by a family. They gave her the card when Singletary made their autistic son’s day by giving him a free donut to cheer him up. Or the moment and joyful tears she shared with a young woman who was celebrating their first day on

estrogen medication for gender reassignment. “That is what is so cool about Disney,” Singletary said. “Even if you have really bad experiences or you don’t like the location you’re at, there are so many nice people that come to those parks that make you feel like you’re making a difference in their day in making it feel more magical.” Entertainment.ed@ocolly.com

CHRIST’S CHURCH! I became a Christian in November 1956 in Japan while a member of the U.S. Air force. Shortly after, a friend and I traveled to visit some missionaries. While talking with one, I asked him; Which group or church should I join? There are so many. Which one is right? Wisely, he did not answer my question directly, but handed me a church card and said, I have heard that God is working in a wonderful way at this church. If you get an opportunity, it would be good to go by and visit. On my way back to my base, I prayed that the Lord would get me stationed near Waco, Texas if he wanted me to visit this church. My orders came in a few days later, I was stationed at Ft. Worth, Texas, 85 miles from Waco. I had a wonderful time there. Was it a perfect church? No! But God taught me many good things while there that

laid a solid foundation for my Christian life. The real church (Called out ones) is made up of individuals around the world who have responded to the gospel message. They have opened their hearts to Christ, put their trust in Him as their Saviour and Lord. Their sins are forgiven and they have a new life by the Holy Spirit. The church is growing in China and the Far east. Though persecuted, God is calling out people in the Middle East. The church is South America is expanding in many places. All over the World, people are responding to the call of Christ to trust and follow him. The meetings and outward forms vary, but the Lord is building his church. (Mt.16:18) God’s love gift, the good news, is still offered to all through Christ. Be sure it is yours! Come and follow Jesus!

Finding the positive cowboys see a boost from different sources

By Chris Becker Just a couple of weeks ago, Kalib Boone shed light on his confidence struggles he was dealing with, but Saturday against Baylor, the sophomore had a career day. Although his career-high 21 points will be overshadowed in the long run because of the loss, Boone boosted his confidence in the game, which will come in big down the stretch for Oklahoma State. “Like I said before Kansas State, I feel like, personally this season, I haven’t done everything I’ve needed to do for my team, like I’ve been holding back” Boone said. “I went out saying, ‘I’m going to play free.’” OSU is far from having the biggest team down low, but with Boone improving in the last few games, Bernard Kouma seeing increased minutes and Matthew Alexander Moncrieffe coming into his own down low, the Cowboys have found a way to compete in the paint. Moncrieffe saw a big boost in minutes in the game with the limited bench, and he made the most of the opportunity. He recorded his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. “Obviously with Cade out, other guys had to have big games,” Moncrieffe said. “Coming in, I knew whether I scored a lot or a little, I was going to have to dominate the glass, which I thought I kind of did. Ultimately, that was just my focus, stepping up.” OSU has played five ranked Big 12 opponents this season and has led all five at halftime including Saturday’s loss to Baylor, which was Baylor’s second time to trail at the half this season. For more than half of the game, the Cowboys held a lead over the No. 2 team in the nation, a team coach Mike Boynton picked to finish first in the Big 12, which to him, proves a lot about his team. “I haven’t seen Gonzaga a lot, and if they’re better than Baylor, it’s not by much, so we just played against one of the top two or three teams in the country,” Boynton said. “For 28 minutes, we were just as good as them, and that was without two of our better players. “So if that’s the best team or second best team in the country, then we’ve got a pretty damn good team.” Sports.ed@ocolly.com

Shorthanded Continued from pg. 1 Moncrieffe was able to dominate the glass at times today, and it helped keep OSU in the game for as long as it was. He finished with 10 rebounds and added 13 points, and the Cowboys did an excellent job rebounding in the first half. It also helped that Kalib Boone had a career day. He got the Cowboys off to a hot start by scoring seven of the team’s first nine points, and he ended the game with a career-high 21 points and also a career-high seven rebounds. It was a career day for Boone, but Boynton wasn’t surprised by that at all. “To be honest, it’s what I expect from him,” Boynton said. “What I’ve gotta get him to understand is we need that Kalib every game. Not just when he thinks there’s an emergency going on.” With Boone and

Moncrieffe leading the way, OSU took a 36-32 lead into the half. There was a definite change in demeanor for Baylor to start the second half. The Bears were slowly building up confidence, and the eight-man rotation was starting to catch-up to the Cowboys. Fatigue was beginning to set in. “We did a really good job defensively and rebounding in the first half and taking care of the basketball,” Boynton said. “For half of the second half, we hung in there, but there’s no doubt that we were gassed, we just weren’t able to sustain it. That’s not an excuse, it’s reality.” Around the 12-minute mark, the game completely turned on its head for the Cowboys. And it happened fast. Over a six-minute span, Baylor went on a 17-1 run, going from trailing 50-48, to winning 67-51. During that stretch, Baylor shot 9 of 11 from the field and

made all five 3-pointers it attempted. The man to finally push Baylor over the edge was their best player and their leader: Jared Butler. “We let Jared Butler get loose three straight times,” Boynton said. “We had him in front of us most of the night, but that is where it started. He did what All-Americans do: he made plays when his team needed him.” Over the final five minutes, OSU stayed within 20 and ultimately ended up losing by 15 points. Even with everything this team had against them today, to maintain a lead for 27 minutes is impressive. “We’re gonna fight regardless if we’re winning or losing,” Boone said. “We’re gonna fight whether we have seven, six ,10 or 11. Throw a number out there and tell us how many players we have, then we’re gonna go out there and fight.” Sports.ed@ocolly.com
