arm Credit Canada (FCC) today launched a 60-day Expression of Interest (EOI) process for its new $1 billion Agri-food Project Finance initiative. Organizations are invited to bring forward major agri-food processing and manufacturing projects across Canada in support of a stronger, more resilient and affordable food system for all Canadians. As part of the Government of Canada’s National Food Security Strategy, the specialized financing is designed to advance construction-ready, infrastructure projects that expand food processing and manufacturing capacity across Canada. By expanding food processing here at home, Agri-food Project Finance aims to create more value-added Canadian agricultural products, strengthen domestic supply chains and improve long-term food security. “Our government is focused on strengthening Canada’s food system so Canadians can count on a reliable supply of high-quality, affordable food,” said Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Heath MacDonald. “This new $1 billion fund, combined with the $150 million investment in Velocity Agri-Capital Partners, will help Canadian agri-food businesses bring ambitious projects to life, expand processing capacity, and grow value here at home. By investing in innovation and infrastructure, we’re supporting producers and ensuring Canada’s food system is resilient for the future.” While Canada produces some of the world’s highest-quality agricultural products, much of that is shipped abroad for processing before returning to Canadian grocery store shelves. Agri-food Project Finance introduces a specialized debt financing approach to help more of those projects move forward. FCC is uniquely positioned to lead this work through its long-standing presence in Canada’s agriculture and food industry, as it supports projects that may face challenges securing conventional lending. ubota Tractor Corporation today announced the official launch of WorkSmart Autosteer, a precision guidance system built for compact and utility equipment, extending technology traditionally used on Kubota large ag tractors to more machines across its broader equipment lineup. The system works like an autopilot: it holds the line while the operator stays in command of the operation. Competitively priced at an MSRP of $6,000*, the system is compatible with new and used Kubota equipment, is backed by a 2-year limited warranty, and can be financed through Kubota Credit Corporation to qualified purchasers. WorkSmart Autosteer makes its public debut at the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa, and transforms how farmers, ranchers, contractors, and turf professionals approach their most demanding tasks from seeding and tillage to spraying and harvesting. Most precision guidance products on the market have been engineered for full-size row-crop tractors and sold as third-party kits. SARDA AG RESEARCH CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY SARDA Ag Research held its 40th Anniversary celebration on Aug. 5 and 6 at its headquarters west of Donnelly. The event was meant to put a focus on the entire agricultural industry, inclusive of grains, pulses, oilseeds, forage and specialty crops in the area. “We’re very proud of the job the SARDA team did organizing this event and welcoming people from the industry,” says SARDA Chair Simon Lavoie. “Our 40th Anniversary had a variety of activities for the whole family, and we were happy to see a great crowd come throughout the day.” SARDA celebrated its rich history in the area. “We’re proud of the extensive work that we’ve done since our inception in 1986,” says Lavoie. “We started our ventures with direct seeding and then moved on to other agronomy work. In the late 1990s we worked on pea inoculant and then introduced forage seed work with then Alberta Agriculture’s Calvin Yoder (who is now part of our team).” He says they’ve been working on developing new markets with lupins and industrial hemp. SARDA AGRICULTURAL TRADE SHOW READIES FOR 2027 SARDA Ag Research is now accepting registrations for its SARDA Agricultural Trade Show set to take place in Falher April 1 to 3, 2027. Trade Show Coordinator Emily Plihal says they’ve chosen to expand their event to include an additional venue, now the event will be held at the Falher Regional Recreation Complex and Smoky River Community Hall. “We offered our 2025 booth holders to retain their booths prior to opening general registration,” says Plihal. “As a result, the curling rink and arena are almost completely booked, with some of the 2025 booth holders yet to respond. We are opening general reservation of Smoky River Community Hall booths to additional agricultural vendors.” Plihal says so far, they’ve booked everything from seed companies to machinery companies and financial institutions to post frame builders and everything in between. She’s excited for the upcoming show, saying that they anticipate all 202 booths will be filled with interesting companies for agricultural producers and community members to explore. “We’re anticipating a great show with lots of attendees and there will be a little bit for everyone,” Plihal says. “We will also have sponsorship packages ready in the month or so, if anyone is interested in providing sponsorship for the show.” She explains that all funds raised from the SARDA Ag Trade Show go right back into agricultural research and development. All funds help to facilitate the programs SARDA currently runs, as well as new and exciting initiatives that their staff hope to explore. Their efforts are important, not only to local producers but also to producers throughout the province and country. New Holland Debuts ForageCam™ For FR Forage Cruiser Models To Get Real-Time Kernel Processing Scores During Harvest New Holland, Pa., September 1, 2026
N
ew Holland North America is releasing ForageCam™ for its lineup of FR Forage Cruisers for the 2027 season, giving producers the ability to capture real-time kernel processing scores (KPS). This allows producers and forage cruiser operators to monitor live crop flow and quality and optimize performance to hit their target KPS. “For dairy and beef producers, feed quality is the most important indicator of forage harvester performance,” says Patrick Weitzel, forage harvester marketing manager for New Holland North America. “With ForageCam, producers and custom operators are getting a real-time KPS and can assess right away if the quality is high enough the moment their forage is running through the harvester. In the past, we had to guess from the cab what the score was or send samples to the lab to determine the KPS. Now, we instantly know the forage score and quality.”
HOW FORAGECAM WORKS ForageCam is a spout-mounted camera with AI-powered vision that continuously analyzes the chopped
corn crop flow, monitoring the percentage of fully processed kernels and comparing it against the target processing levels that have been predetermined by the operator. This data is used to continuously and automatically adjust the kernel processor to achieve the desired forage quality, eliminate underprocessing, boost productivity, minimize fuel consumption and reduce machine wear. Together, these features can contribute to a lower total cost of harvesting and increased forage quality. KPS monitoring and mapping data captured by the ForageCam can be viewed live in the cab on the IntelliView™ IV Plus display or later via detailed reports and map layers in FieldOps™.

Both the 4TS and 400T have rated operating capacities of about 4,000 pounds and max hydraulic flow of over 40 gallons per minute. The 109-horsepower engine is a JCB 4.4-liter EcoMax, which Tice says has been a longtime power package for the company’s other equipment, including telehandlers, backhoes and excavators. “That’s a horsepower that JCB understands very well,” he says. “It only seemed right to put it into the compact track loaders when the time came.” Along with the increased horsepower comes 380 footpounds of torque. “That is massive. We’re pretty sure that no other competitive machine has this much torque.” Both models can also dig 3 feet below grade. Though there’s more power and torque, the weight and dimensions are similar to the current tracked 3TS Teleskid, keeping the width at 6.5 feet and roof height at about 6 feet. The company did add about 7 inches to the undercarriage’s length to fit the additional aftertreatment components required of a larger Tier 4 Final engine with DEF and DPF. This also led to a big change for the engine bay, which grew taller to accommodate a redesigned rear door and a new hydraulic cooling package. “So a big thing for the customers that are running these hydraulic attachments is cooling of your hydraulic system,” Tice explains. “We don’t want the customer to have to go out and buy auxiliary coolers to put on these machines.” Tice says the new cooling system has been tested in triple-digit temperatures in Georgia, Texas and Nevada and showed no signs of overheating. “Our engineers did a very good job of designing the cooling system to support that additional hydraulic flow, eliminating the need for auxiliary coolers, which I think is going to be a big selling feature for us.”

The 400T and 4TS deliver similar performance, with one big difference. The 4TS has a hinge pin height of 15 feet and forward reach of 8 feet. Thanks to 4,000 pounds of ROC, the performance is closing in on compact telehandlers – making it two machines in one. “A lot of our competitors’ compact telehandlers stop at 18 feet,” Tice says. “So we’re really in that dualpurpose machine.” He notes that with the 4TS also having tracks, it can maneuver in softer terrain for material-handling operations. Another benefit of the 4TS is its ability to deliver high flow to attachments when the boom is extended. Those working in land clearing or forestry could extend a rotary cutter or mulching head to the top of a tree up to 15 feet tall and work down, increasing efficiency.
SMOOTH RIDE AND NO BOOM DRIFT Another area of customer feedback concerned boom drift on the company’s 3TS. When the boom was

extended with a heavy load, over a period of time, the boom would gradually descend. The new 4TS eliminates or significantly reduces that with its new hydraulic system and valve body, Tice says. JCB also gave the 4TS and 400T its manual Smooth Ride and Auto Smooth Ride, but with some changes to make it easier for operators. On the manual Smooth Ride, operators can engage it on the fly from the menu to use when traveling between loading and unloading to keep material from spilling. Unlike the previous system, they don’t have to lower the boom all the way down to engage it. Now, it can be engaged in any position. For even more convenience, Auto Smooth Ride will take care of engaging and disengaging the feature automatically at a set speed. As an example, when heading into a pile of material, you want the boom to be stationary and not floating. With Auto Smooth ride, after you’ve loaded the material and turned around, it will automatically engage once you hit the preset speed. “It really makes it effortless for the operator that’s doing that kind of repetitive application,” Tice explains. “He’s not having to go up into the menu and press a button each time he grabs that load.”
INSIDE THE CAB The 400T and 4TS get similar cabs to the 3TS – including JCB’s popular side-entry door – but with more hydraulic flow options on the touchscreen menu to support the higher horsepower. “We now have multiple modes of hydraulic flow, so it’s no longer that standard flow, high flow,” Tice says. “We now have standard flow, high flow and then two modes of super flow.” Max flow is 41 gallons per minute at 4,000 psi. Another new menu item is Hill Hold, which prevents unwanted movement when working on inclines and slopes. “If we are running a brush cutter down on a pond bank, the machine doesn’t roll.” Attachments can be changed from the cab with JCB’s standard electrically actuated hitch. “Basically what that does is eliminate the leak point inside of that

(SOURCE: JCB) quick hitch, so we don’t have hydraulic lines running up into the quick hitch of the machine for the actuation,” Tice explains. “Our quick-hitch design is 100% enclosed,” he adds, preventing debris from entering it. The coupler system can run any competitors’ attachments. JCB also added premium LED lighting for working at night and early mornings.
400T VS. 4TS When talking with customers interested in the 400T and 4TS, Tice says he starts with the Teleskid. “It’s the best of both worlds. The 4TS does everything the 400T does, but then you have that additional capability of a telescopic boom.” The 400T is primarily
for those who want to stick with the traditional fixedboom compact track loader. “That 400T is kind of the entry-level unit. The 4TS is a step up from that.” Both 400T and 4TS are production ready and being built in Savannah, Georgia. Dealers began taking preorders in June. The company’s official public launch of the two models was at today’s Farm Progress Show in Decatur, Illinois. “We’ve already built the entire pipeline for 2025 and started into 2026,” Tice says. “… We think we’ve got a good balance of performance and machine size here. This is going to be really popular. We’re extremely excited about it.” NH

Lethbridge Polytechnic Researchers Debut Evapotranspiration Measurement Tool “Irrimap” For Producers, Researchers lethpolytech.ca, Sept 1, 2026
L
ethbridge Polytechnic’s Mueller Irrigation Research Group (MIRG) has developed an easy-touse, web-based program to measure evaporation and transpiration (evapotranspiration, or ET) in agricultural settings, primarily crop and hay fields. “Evapotranspiration is a major component of the water cycle, part evaporation which is a physical process and part transpiration which is when plants emit water vapour from their leaves as they photosynthesize,” says Dr. Michael Kehoe, research scientist, Mueller Irrigation Research Group. “Measuring ET is important to determine soil moisture levels, giving producers, agronomists and researchers the information they need to make decisions on irrigation duration, amounts and more.” The program, called Irrimap, uses publicly available data to show ET amounts for selected areas, from small hectare fields to whole sections. Funded in part by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) as part of Evan Derdall’s research work, as well as through the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture via the Sustainable Canadian Agriculture Partnership, Irrimap collates data into an intuitive and understandable format, giving the user valuable insights into crop water usage from a phone, laptop or other device. “The importance and value of precision agriculture is growing as input costs increase, driving down margins for producers,” says Dr. Willemijn Appels, senior research chair, Mueller Irrigation Research Group. “Irrimap is an important tool that can be used to optimize growth and crop potential through variable rate irrigation and other precision, data-based technologies.”
Irrimap looking at the Lethbridge Polytechnic Research Farm “One of the exciting benefits of Irrimap is that it is feeding into other tools we’re researching and developing, like crop input optimization tools,” adds Kehoe. “Projects like these ensure data-backed decisions are made that better manage inputs to minimize risks to yield.” A key member of the Irrimap team is Derian Setoguchi (Computer Information Technology 2025), who started with MIRG as an intern last year. Now a research assistant, Setoguchi coded and programmed Irrimap using skills he learned in the classroom.

“Irrimap was my first big project with technologies that I was unfamiliar with,” says Setoguchi. “I was able to apply a lot of what I learned in CIT to work through the problems I encountered, like optimizing code and understanding the math behind the project. Between this and my other projects for MIRG, I’ve learned how much skills transfer between projects, both educational and professional.” Irrimap is available for public use and can be accessed at www.irrimap.ca. rowers wonder how to approach harvest when canola fields have plants and patches at quite different stages of maturity. With any approach, the least mature areas of the field need to be left to mature. Swathing remains the best and least risky option to manage extreme variation in maturity. When do I swath? As for timing, the goal is 60% seed colour change on the main stem, but wait until the least mature areas have a degree of colour change on the bottom pods and seeds in the outer branches are no longer mushy and translucent. Varieties with a degree of shatter tolerance can make it easier to delay swathing, letting the least mature areas catch up as much as possible. Keep in mind that more mature canola can be fluffier and more difficult to anchor in the swath, making it more prone to blowing and damage in the swath. If farmers don’t want to swath, the question then is whether to let the uneven canola crop ripen naturally or whether to spray a pre-harvest product. With enough time, leaving a pod-shatter tolerant variety to dry-down naturally can be a suitable (and lower cost) option to swathing and pre-harvest spraying. Preliminary results from a project assessing pre-harvest aids in canola suggests these products are less necessary under warm and dry conditions in the late summer/early fall. Do I apply a pre-harvest aid to dry down the green patches? This is not an ideal situation for any of the pre-harvest products available for use on canola. Each has its downsides when it comes to uneven crop. –Diquat (Reglone Ion) stops maturity, so anything too green when the sprayed will stay green. The risk with an uneven crop is that chlorophyll levels will be locked in, which is why Diquat should not be used on crops with extreme variation in maturity. Diquat application timing is 90% brown seeds. At this stage, all but 10% of the seeds on the very top and outer most branches haven’t completely turned black or brown. This is very different from a seed colour change (SCC) measurement that only refers to the main stem and includes any seeds with a degree of speckling or mottling. Syngenta provides the following tips on how to stage the crop: • Survey the field. Look for brown colouring in the upper pods and stems. You should not see any yellow or green.
• Listen for a rattle in your pods. Mature seeds are loose in the pod and rattle when the plant is shaken. • Look for brown seeds. Strip out seeds from several areas of the field. The crop is ready when 90% of each plant has seeds that have turned completely brown. Syngenta supports the use of Reglone Ion on shatter-tolerant canola only. –Saflufenacil (Heat) has a labelled application rate of 60-75% brown seed, although most recent BASF literature recommends 80% brown seed. Talk to your rep about the application timing they support. With a slightly earlier application timing and both contact and systemic activity, this product is better suited than diquat to manage some variation in maturity. –Glyphosate has the earliest application timing of all the products (labelled at when seed from the least-mature plants have less than 30% moisture). Having an earlier application window and strictly systemic, slow-acting mode of action, this product is the best option of the pre-harvest products when dealing with variable maturity in non-glyphosate tolerant canola. Even so, swathing still remains the ideal choice for managing extreme variance in maturity. Remember to Keep It Clean. It is critical to wait until seed moisture content is less than 30% in the least-mature areas of the crop before applying glyphosate. Applications made before the correct stage increase the risk of unacceptable residue in the seed. By waiting until 50 to 60% seed colour change in the least-mature areas of the field, growers can be confident seed moisture will be at less than 30%. Rapid crop advancement due to hot, dry conditions can mean the driest pods become brittle in less time – which is especially risky for plants without pod-shatter tolerance. Hot, dry conditions could reduce the ability for late seeds to fill out before shriveling up. What we do know is that swathing early is probably the wrong move, especially if the later areas are also those with more yield potential. Plants in lower areas could also be rooted into moisture at depth, which means seeds could still be filling despite dry conditions. NH

R
eplacement heifers represent the future genetic and productive potential of the beef herd. Selecting the right females can improve fertility, calving ease, maternal traits, temperament and overall herd performance. However, selection criteria should align with an operation’s goals, environment, available feed resources and marketing strategy. The following checkpoints can help guide replacement decisions as a heifer progresses from birth to breeding.
✅ CHECKPOINT #1: BIRTH
The selection process can start on day one. BIRTH DATE - Heifers born during the first 21 days of the calving season should receive special consideration. Research has shown that early-born heifers are more likely to reach puberty sooner, breed earlier and continue calving earlier throughout their productive lives. CALVING EASE - Prioritize heifer calves that were born unassisted. Difficult births can indicate problem genetics or maternal factors that may not align with long-term herd productivity goals. EVALUATE THE COW - Birth is also an opportunity to assess the cow behind the calf. Consider adding a cull or feeder tag for heifer calves from cows that: • Consistently calve late • Have poor udder quality • Wean below-average calves • Require calving assistance Keep or Cull? Keep heifers that are early-born, born unassisted and come from productive, problem-free cows. Cull heifer calves that fail to meet these standards.
✅ CHECKPOINT #2: WEANING
By weaning, more information is available to evaluate each candidate heifer. STRUCTURAL SOUNDNESS - Assess feet, leg structure, body size and overall balance. Structural problems can lead to reduced longevity, impaired mobility and reproductive challenges later in life. TEMPERAMENT - Disposition matters. Calm cattle are generally easier to handle and may experience better reproductive performance and longevity. Nervous
or aggressive animals can increase labor requirements and safety risks. HEALTH STATUS - Only retain heifers that meet herd health standards. Chronic health issues can affect growth, reproduction and lifetime productivity. GENETIC MERIT - Evaluate each heifer’s genetic potential using available tools such as: • Genomic testing • Expected progeny differences (EPDs) • Sire and dam performance records Selection should focus on traits that support the operation’s production goals, which could include calving ease, fertility, maternal ability and balanced growth. COW PERFORMANCE - Once again, review the dam’s history, including calving ease, production records, udder quality and structural soundness. Strong-performing cows often produce daughters that are more likely to succeed as replacements. Keep or Cull? Retain heifers that combine sound structure, good health, desirable genetics and strong maternal backgrounds.
✅ CHECKPOINT #3: PRE-BREEDING
The pre-breeding period is a critical stage as reproductive success drives herd profitability. WEIGHT AND GROWTH TARGETS - Replacement candidates should achieve approximately 55% to 65% of their expected mature body weight by breeding and be in appropriate body condition. Reaching these targets improves the likelihood that heifers are cycling and ready to conceive. REPRODUCTIVE DEVELOPMENT - Consider a reproductive tract and pelvic examination performed by a veterinarian prior to breeding. These evaluations can help identify females with delayed reproductive development or physical limitations that could affect calving and fertility, such as a narrow pelvis. PUBERTY STATUS - Ideally, heifers should be cycling between 11 and 14 months of age to calve as twoyear-olds. Heifers with delayed puberty may struggle to breed on schedule and should be carefully evaluated. HERD HEALTH - A veterinarian-guided vaccination and disease prevention program helps protect repro-
ductive performance and long-term productivity. TEMPERAMENT REVIEW - If temperament concerns remain evident at this stage, consider culling those females before investing further resources. Keep or Cull? The best candidates are healthy, on target for weight and capable of entering the breeding season ready to conceive.
✅ CHECKPOINT #4: PREGNANCY CHECKING
Pregnancy detection provides the final replacementheifer evaluation before entering the cow herd. PREGNANCY STATUS - Open heifers should be culled. Retaining non-pregnant females increases costs without generating future calf revenue. DATE OF CONCEPTION - Heifers that conceive early in the breeding season should be favored because they are more likely to calve early and maintain that advantage throughout their productive lives. Keep or Cull? Keep bred heifers that conceived early in the breeding season (first 21 days). Cull open females and those that conceived late if replacement numbers allow.
➡ BUILDING A STRONGER COW HERD
Selecting replacement heifers involves a series of evaluations that begin at birth and continue through breeding and beyond. By assessing calving date, maternal background, structural soundness, growth, reproductive development, health, temperament and pregnancy status, beef producers can make informed decisions that strengthen herd performance over the long term. The goal is simple: invest in females that will become productive, fertile, long-lasting cows while removing those that are less likely to contribute to the future success of the herd. NH

anada’s pork industry is an economic powerhouse. Recognizing that infectious disease is one of the major risks to swine production, the Government of Canada is helping industry further develop the tools needed to safeguard animal health, strengthen sector resilience, and support future growth. Today, the Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced up to $3,111,486 for the Canadian Pork Council through the AgriAssurance Program – National Industry Association Component to advance the scope and quality of swine health surveillance in Canada. This funding will support the development, validation, and upgrading of multiplex assay technologies, which are comprehensive lab tests that can screen for multiple domestic swine viruses from a single sample. The project also includes implementing a targeted national proficiency program to support consistent testing across veterinary labs in Canada and establishing a secure surveillance database to track swine viruses. This investment will increase the availability of cost-effective, specific, and sensitive diagnostic testing for rapid detection of swine intestinal and respiratory viruses. The project is based at the Atlantic Veterinary College and involves collaboration with veterinary practitioners, veterinary laboratories, and industry. Disease outbreak can have major impacts on animal welfare, food supply, productivity, producer mental health, and can result in significant economic losses. Animal health surveillance is key to early detection, preventing spread and helping to mitigate the effects that disease can have. Defining Breeding Goals To Drive Genetic Progress On The Ranch beefresearch.ca, August 12, 2026 “
Y
ou can’t improve what you don’t measure,” says Alberta rancher Bruce Niznik. “Every decision we make—from which cows stay to which bulls we buy—has to support the kind of herd we want to build.” Niznik Ranch, located in the Antelope Creek area of southern Alberta, is a fourth-generation family operation that’s been active since 1920. Today, Bruce, his wife, brother and their families run 900-1,000 cows on native and tame pastures. The herd is primarily Angus-based, with a portion bred to Wagyu sires for a branded beef program. The Wagyu-cross calves are marketed through a partnership that targets premium, high-marbling beef, while the Angus calves are sold to repeat buyers who value the operation’s reputation for uniform, high-performing cattle. Clear breeding goals and disciplined selection have shaped a cow herd that thrives under their management conditions.
ALIGNING BREEDING GOALS WITH THE RANCH ENVIRONMENT Defining clear breeding goals doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does have to be intentional. Bruce advises producers to start with evaluation of their management and environment. “Decide what kind of cows you want to run and what will fit your operation, then use the tools—expected progeny differences (EPDs), records, carcass feedback—to get there.” The Nizniks began by identifying the traits that made a cow work in their environment. Those that consistently calved early, bred back every year, maintained good condition and raised healthy calves became the foundation of the herd. Calving occurs on grass with minimal assistance.
Therefore, the culling criteria are strict: cows that require help at calving or raise a poor calf are removed from the herd. This disciplined approach has created a cow herd that consistently calves unassisted. “We mark the calves from those top-performing cows by notching their ear tags at birth,” Bruce explains. “When fall comes, we can quickly see which calves came from our best females — those are the ones we keep for replacements.” Over time, they included carcass quality and efficiency as additional goals, recognizing opportunities to improve animal value through genetics without sacrificing the basics.
Heifers that calve in the first or second cycle stay in the Angus herd; those calving later move into the Wagyu group. “The Wagyu cross fits with our management,” Bruce explains. “It lets us make use of good, functional cows that don’t fit our replacement criteria—and it’s helped us add carcass value.” Data from that program provided valuable feedback on their breeding direction. “Our crossbred calves perform better and grade higher than the average,” he says. “That tells us that the base genetics in our herd are working the way they should.” The Niznik family
USING BULL SELECTION TO DRIVE PROGRESS
MANAGING FOR LONG-TERM PROGRESS
Every bull the Nizniks buy is chosen for a purpose— whether it’s to improve carcass quality, strengthen feet or maintain fertility and cow size. “We look at our herd each year, identify what needs fine-tuning and then find bulls that address that,” Bruce adds. They source bulls from a few consistent Angus breeders who provide detailed EPD data and carcass ultrasound results, focusing on traits that complement their operational goals. Soundness, docility and structural correctness are non-negotiable traits, alongside calving ease and feed efficiency. Bulls are also evaluated on how their progeny perform within the ranch’s environment, helping refine future breeding decisions.
Through disciplined selection, the Nizniks have built a herd that fits their environment, management and markets—moderate-framed cows with good feet, strong maternal instincts and calves that perform both in the feedlot and on the rail. “The progress has been gradual but steady,” says Bruce. “Our herd is more uniform, easier to manage and produces a better-quality product every year. That’s what good bull selection does—it compounds over time.”
EVOLVING GOALS: ADDING CARCASS VALUE A decade ago, the operation introduced Wagyu genetics to diversify income and capture added value from cows that weren’t providing replacements. Roughly 40% of the calves born each year are Wagyu crosses, produced as a terminal mating.
