Alberta Water Council Concludes 22-Year Legacy Of Advancing Collaborative Water Management In Alberta Edmonton, June 29, 2026
O
n behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, it is with great sadness that I announce that Alberta Water Council (AWC) will be winding down operations effective June 30, 2026. After careful deliberation and efforts to secure alternate funding, the organization has made the difficult decision to move toward an orderly dissolution. For many years, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas has supported our work through annual grant funding. In February 2026, we were informed that, because of the financial pressures facing the Government of Alberta, this funding would be discontinued effective May 26, 2026. Despite efforts to secure other sources of operational funding, it was not possible to find a solution that would enable AWC to continue. Since its establishment in 2004, the AWC has made significant contributions to advancing water management across Alberta for the benefit of all Albertans. Over the past 22 years, we have been proud to lead and support landmark initiatives that have helped major water-using sectors improve water conservation, efficiency, and productivity; informed the development of Alberta’s Wetland Policy; advanced efforts to prevent aquatic invasive species and protect healthy ecosystems; and, more recently, strengthened resilience to multi-year drought and enhanced capacity for source water protection planning, water literacy, among many other accomplishments. Our work has had meaningful impact, and we are grateful to have contributed to the ongoing effort to support sustainable and effective water management in Alberta, across Canada, and North America both now and for future generations. At the heart of AWC’s success was our ability to provide a neutral and respected forum where individuals and organizations from diverse backgrounds could come together to discuss complex water management challenges, find consensus or share diverse perspectives, to work collaboratively toward shared solutions. Our
organization was founded on the principles of collaboration, transparency, and a genuine commitment to understanding and considering the perspectives of all those who contributed their valuable time, expertise, and resources to our work. Over the years, thousands of hours were generously contributed in-kind, underscoring the enduring importance of provincial-level dialogue, volunteer work, and engagement on water management issues. Our priority now is to ensure a thoughtful, transparent, and well-managed transition as we wind down operations. Over the coming weeks, we will work closely with our partners and stakeholders to responsibly conclude organizational activities, address outstanding commitments, and support the transition of ongoing initiatives wherever possible. We recognize that this news may come as a surprise to some, and we want to express our sincere gratitude for the trust, collaboration, and support that so many individuals and organizations have shown AWC over the years. It has been both a pleasure and an honour to be part of this exceptional organization for the past years. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has shared their time, expertise, resources, and passion for effective water management with AWC over the last 22 years. While AWC’s organizational journey is coming to a close, we remain confident that the values, relationships, and collaborative spirit we have built together will continue to strengthen water stewardship efforts across Alberta for years to come. EGINA — Tenants in Canada Centre and the Stockman’s Arena on Regina’s exhibition grounds are expecting 30-day eviction notices today. These include several agricultural organizations that have been headquartered on the grounds for decades, but not Canadian Western Agribition. At this time, Agribition is staying put, but organizers are predicting a challenging year amid construction and a reduced show footprint. The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association, Saskatchewan Association of Agricultural Societies and Exhibitions, Canadian Bison Association, Saskatchewan Bison Association and others will have to find new space.
FARM GROUPS PUSHED OUT AFTER DECADES The CBA said it didn’t yet know what it would do. SSGA president Kelly Williamson said the organization is in a difficult spot. “While we anticipated there could be changes following the change in ownership, it is deeply disappointing that, after 45 years as a tenant, we are being treated in this manner,” he said in a statement. The SSGA office moved to Canada Centre in 1981 from Maple Creek, Saslk.

He said many of the REAL District facilities were built with support from the agriculture industry, which makes the situation more concerning.
THE DEAL BEHIND THE UPHEAVAL The upheaval comes after Brandt Sports and Entertainment purchased seven facilities on REAL District from the city of Regina. The agricultural and construction manufacturer already had naming rights to the main arena and purchased the former Agribition Building, which is under renovation as an entertainment space. The transfer of the other assets — Canada Centre, Stockman’s Arena, the commercial barn, Queensbury Centre and AgEx Pavilion — are expected to begin in July. Brandt said REAL District is evicting the tenants, not Brandt, since the sale hasn’t yet concluded. It would not comment on Agribition 2026, which is scheduled for Nov. 23-28.
WHY IT MATTERS Less room for 2026 Earlier this week at Agribition’s 55th annual general meeting, members heard they would have less space to work with this year, affecting about 1,000 head. The entire Canada Centre East won’t be available, including the wash racks, and there still isn’t a concrete plan in place for housing and washing facilities.
WHAT’S CHANGING Michael Latimer, now past president, told reporters before the meeting he had few details about the coming changes. He said the show had worked around construction in the past and would do so again. “There’s a lot of things in play at the moment,” he said. Agribition wasn’t consulted during the business transaction and he said staff and volunteers are focused on putting on the best possible show.
A RECORD YEAR AS CHANGE LOOMS The 2025 show generated economic activity worth $$151.3 million, up 30 per cent from 2023. Attendance was a record 151,037, generating $109.7 million in tourist spending, according to Agribition. A delegation from Mexico spent $280,000 at the show, said chief executive officer Shaun Kindopp. It recorded profit of about $210,000, compared to a loss of $13,000 the previous year. The show has changed its fiscal year end from Jan. 31 to March 31 to better capture all the show revenue and expenses. ‘FIGHTING FOR EVERY SINGLE SQUARE INCH’ Kindopp appeared at city council when the deal was discussed and said the show was clear that costs, the show footprint and show dates must be protected. Showing a map of which buildings will be available, he told members there would be no livestock going into Canada Centre as of now. That affects alpacas, sheep and several breeds of purebred cattle. “We are working to ensure that all of our risk is mitigated in this,” he said. “Agribition is a livestock show. Agribition is here to commit that this event goes, that this event retains all of the livestock. “We are not interested in negotiating to try and remove livestock from our organization.” The show is looking at putting another tent up beside the existing covered structures next to tie-outs to ensure that there is power, water and ventilation,
he said. Exhibitors should get what they would have if they were in Canada Centre, he said, adding they are “fighting for every single square inch.” Kindopp also said they are looking for a wash rack solution, rather than have people take cattle from the tents to the ITC. The show has asked for 115,000 sq. feet, but he said the amount is one thing and how it’s used is another. Several members and exhibitors said they were concerned about the loss of space and how all the livestock would be accommodated. Williamson said the SSGA is also concerned about the loss of critical infrastructure that supports Agribition. “We are concerned that the proposed changes could jeopardize the future of the event as we know it and undermine an institution that has long been a source of pride for our province’s agricultural sector,” he said. The city is retaining Mosaic Stadium, Co-operators Centre and the AffinityPlex. It will continue to own the ITC, which Brandt will lease and operate.
A NEW EXECUTIVE TAKES OVER Working through these challenges will be the first order of business for the new executive elected June 17. Karl Sauter from Wawota, Sask., is the new president, as Latimer has served his term. Mona Aulie from Rouleau is vice-president and members at large are Christine Ewer Hill from Redvers, Sask., Bruce Holmquist from Kinistino, Sask., and Glenn Lipsett from Pilot Butte, Sask. SARDA Preparing For Its 40th Anniversary Celebration Kochia was declared a noxious weed by Northern Sunrise County at its April 14 meeting. Big Lakes County recently did the same. SARDA will be hosting a seminar on the weed at its 40th anniversary in August. Emily Plihal, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter, South Peace News, High Prairie, AB, Jul 8, 2026 | News discussion on kochia, lupins, herbicide injury, wild oat management, forage, and canola. “We have some industry professionals coming to discuss things that are happening in the agricultural sector,” says Yaremko. “This includes pests or weeds that we should look out for, up and coming products that we are trialing, and new plant varieties that we have grown to study.” A complete list of topics will be posted to SARDA Ag Research’s Facebook page in upcoming weeks. “We’re also excited to have some bouncy castles for the kids,” adds Yaremko. “There will also be food trucks, a farmer’s market, and a tour of the Smoky Hemp Decortication plant next door.” Yaremko explains all parking for the event will be at the Guy-Donnelly Sportex and there will be a shuttle provided by Smoky River Transportation to and from the venue. ARDA Ag Research is hosting its 40th Anniversary celebration in August and organizers are hoping you’ll bring the whole family to celebrate! “We’re hosting our 40th Anniversary and Agricultural Showcase on Aug. 5 and 6 west of Donnelly at our office,” says executive director Vance Yaremko. “We’re going to have a variety of activities for the whole family and are eager to see people from throughout the province come to help us celebrate our 40th.” The event is going to feature a mini trade show with 30 booths in the SARDA Ag Research cold storage building. Yaremko says exhibitors are a variety of agricultural, legal, and building businesses. “The trade show will be a smaller version of the exhibits that we have every other spring,” explains Yaremko. “We will also have some outside displays from our local John Deere, Fosters Agri World and a few others.” Yaremko says in addition to the trade show, they will be hosting the annual seminars that will include a

Ranchers Seek Provincial Partnership To Protect Water Storage Due To Drought BCCA, Kamloops, May 26, 2026 structure. Agriculture currently manages over 70% of the infrastructure storing water in the province and we encourage all levels of government, conservation groups and First Nations to join us in assuming responsibility for dams and storage structures to ensure they remain functional and continue supporting long-term watershed resilience. Stored water buffers flooding events, while improving dry season stream flows and stored surface water continuously recharges groundwater aquifers. The Association is increasingly concerned about the ongoing dry conditions and has been monitoring the situation on ranches across the province for the past four weeks. With the exception of the Peace region, all areas are experiencing moderate to severe dry conditions.
Low now cover, below-normal precipitation and warmer spring temperatures are contributing to what could be widespread drought conditions. We are still hopeful for spring rain but without it, many summer pastures will have stunted growth, leaving ranchers with decisions about selling cattle or begin feeding much earlier than expected. During prior droughts, individual ranchers in the worst affected areas had to sell up to 40% of their herds due to lack of pasture and feed shortages. It is important water use for food production and fish protection is prioritized and we encourage all water users, including First Nations, local government and agriculture to voluntarily reduce water use wherever possible to lower the impact of the impending drought. n response to last week’s announcement by the Syilx Okanagan Nation regarding early signs of drought conditions in the southern Interior, the BC Cattlemen’s Association is urging the province to focus on long term investment in landscape level management of watershed with all of the stewardship partners, including First Nations, with a priority on immediately stopping all plans to decommission existing dams and water-storage infrastructure. The BC Cattlemen’s Association sees a practical path forward to help protect the critical flows needed for both fish habitat and essential livestock watering. SCOUT EARLY Begin scouting flixweed patches, volunteer canola, and other canola-related weeds for early signs of weevil activity. CSPW are highly attracted to the colour yellow and often congregate in the earliest flowering areas of a field. While these field edges and earlyflowering patches are good places to locate weevils, treatment decisions should be based on field-wide sampling.

UNDERSTANDING THE DAMAGE Female cabbage seedpod weevils lay eggs in developing canola pods. Once hatched, each larva can consume approximately 5–8 seeds before completing development. However, timing is critical when considering insecticide application. Spraying too early can reduce effectiveness because: • Pods are not yet large enough to support egg laying. • No economic damage occurs until pods reach approximately ½ to ¾ inch (1–2 cm) in length. • Additionally, weevils may still be migrating into the field, especially in very early flowering crops. Applying insecticide before the majority of weevils have arrived may result in reduced control and the need for additional intervention. NH

upporting innovation in animal health is central to Canada’s efforts to ensure the long-term sustainability and resiliency of our food system. Research into alternatives to antibiotics helps the poultry sector adapt to evolving challenges, promote food safety, and strengthen consumer confidence. Today, Wade Grant, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Quadra, on behalf of the Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced an investment of up to $892,122 for Amphoraxe Life Sciences Inc. through the AgriScience Program – Projects Component. This funding will accelerate the development and testing of promising new antimicrobial peptide (AMP) formulations to address significant threats to poultry health. Amphoraxe Life Sciences will develop AMP-based solutions as alternatives to conventional antibiotics for controlling Avian pathogenic E. coli and Salmonella Enterica. Over the course of the project, the team will select, produce, and rigorously evaluate up to ten candidate formulations using sustainable production methods, confirming their safety and effectiveness for use in poultry. By advancing these innovative tools, the project aims to help farmers maintain healthy flocks, reduce dependence on traditional antibiotics, and address the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance. This investment supports a strong, safe, and resilient food supply for Canadians while enhancing animal welfare.

A
s temperatures rise, gastrointestinal roundworms in pastures also thrive. They are a major cause of disease and production losses in small ruminants. The Barber’s pole worm Haemon chus contortus) causes anemia and can be fatal, while the Brown stomach worm (Teladorsagia circumcincta) and the Black scour worm (Trichostrongylus colubriformis) lead to diarrhea, poor growth in lambs, and reduced condition in ewes. Gastrointestinal roundworms are monitored using fecal egg counts (FEC) via fecal flotation and microscopy. Routine monitoring is essential, as dewormer resistance, particularly in Barber’s pole worms, is now common in Alberta, meaning treatments may no longer reliably prevent disease. Ideally, keep them at a cool room temperature (rather than refrigerating). UCVM DSU offers a fecal egg counting service (see details below).
1. MONITOR YOUR FLOCK’S PARASITE LOAD PERIODICALLY
4. ALWAYS QUARANTINE THE NEW ANIMALS
Monitor your flock’s parasite load periodically using fecal egg counts (FEC). Some animals may not show signs of parasite infection even with a heavy parasite load and can be a source of pasture contamination. Sample a group of ewes and a group of yearling lambs separately in the spring and again mid- to late- grazing season. For lambs, sample in mid- to late- grazing season. Collect samples from 15-20 animals per group, then send them individually to the diagnostic lab (preferably early in the week to avoid weekend post office storage). In the lab, the samples will be pooled to obtain a composite FEC. This gives a good idea of the parasite burden, disease risk and potential need for treatment while saving costs. Smaller numbers of animals can be sampled individually for specific clinical reasons or for very small flocks. The most convenient approach is to collect sheep feces from the ground (so-called “environmental samples”). This is fine, as long as the feces has been freshly deposited (still warm). For example, disperse gathered animals and immediately pick up freshly deposited feces. Samples should ideally be collected in plastic (ziplock-type) bags with as much air as possible expelled before sealing. DO NOT freeze samples.
Sample all purchased animals following quarantine dosing before releasing them onto the main pastures to avoid introducing new dewormer-resistant worms into your flock. Consult your veterinarian for detailed recommendations.

TEST THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ANTHELMINTIC DOSING Dewormer resistance is now common, and it is important to test the effectiveness of anthelmintic dosing by performing fecal egg counts before and after treatment. To be representative, fecal samples from 15 to 20 ewes or lambs are necessary – see the sampling approach above.
3. SELECTIVELY TREAT ANIMALS Selectively treat animals to slow the emergence of resistance. Treat only animals with clinical signs (e.g., poor growth or condition) or other evidence of need (e.g., a high FAMACHA score).
5. USE PASTURE MANAGEMENT Use pasture management to maximize parasite control and productivity whilst minimizing anthelmintic use.
6. REMEMBER THAT ROUNDWORMS COMPRISE MANY DIFFERENT SPECIES Remember, gastrointestinal roundworms comprise many different species, which vary in their clinical and production impact and their sensitivity to different drugs. This needs to be considered in a parasite management program.
7. REMEMBER TO CONSULT YOUR VETERINARIAN Work with your veterinarian to include parasite monitoring in your flock health plan, tailored to your grazing system, animal condition, lamb growth, and flock history. A New Vaccine To Protect Against A Major Infection In Dairy Cows

A
t the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Sherbrooke Research and Development Centre, research scientist Céline Ster (Ph.D.) is conducting research projects on dairy cow health and immunology. She is currently leading a research team that is developing a new vaccine to prevent bovine mastitis, a major infection affecting dairy cows. In Canada, dairy production remains the second-largest agricultural sector, with nearly 9000 dairy farms across the country. Bovine mastitis is a bacterial infection that affects dairy cows of all ages and results in significant economic losses for all of these farms. Its causes include the bacterial pathogen Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), which creates inflammation of the mammary gland
(the udder), directly impacting animal welfare and the quantity and quality of milk produced. Dairy cows infected with S. aureus are often asymptomatic. The infection therefore remains in the animal for a long time before it is identified, and can even spread to other animals. On dairy farms, antibiotics are the primary treatment for bovine mastitis. In addition to the high costs associated with antibiotics and their highly variable effectiveness, their excessive and repeated use generates resistance in pathogenic bacteria. In response to this critical issue, Céline is developing and testing alternative approaches to antibiotics. “In our global context of increasing antibiotic resistance, it is increasingly urgent to reduce the use of antibiotics on dairy farms while maintaining the health of dairy cows and providing dairy producers with new tools for infection control.” – Céline Ster, Research Scientist, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Commercial mastitis vaccines are currently available on the market, but they do not prevent new infections. In collaboration with other researchers at AAFC and the Université de Sherbrooke, Céline has been working to develop a vaccine that could prevent
mastitis. To develop this vaccine, the research team had to target a formula that contains components (proteins) expressed by the bacterial pathogen S. aureus during infection. When these components of S. aureus are used in a vaccine, they are detected as foreign agents by the immune system, which reacts by producing anti-
bodies to defend itself, triggering an immune response that can target the bacterial pathogen. By studying mammary infections in dairy cows, the research team discovered six new components of S. aureus that are highly expressed during infection, which is unprecedented in animal science. Early trials showed that the vaccine successfully induced an immune response and reduced inflammation during infections. In trials comparing it to a commercial vaccine, results revealed that this new vaccine reduced the number of S. aureus pathogenic bacteria in infected udder quarters of dairy cows by 18% and allowed the infected udder quarters to produce 18% more milk during the first three weeks following infection. These promising results offer dairy producers a new preventive approach to managing bovine mastitis. This vaccine offers a two-injection treatment for dairy cows during dry-off, whereas commercial vaccines require three injections. It is
also a less expensive alternative to antibiotics and will reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance on farms. The vaccine controls mastitis in cows from the start of lactation, helping to build resistance in the herd and maintain milk production. As a result, the risk of transmission is reduced, as is the risk of culling. Further research is needed before the vaccine can be made available to dairy farmers. Collaboration with an industrial partner, specifically a pharmaceutical company, will be required for the production and commercialization of the vaccine. At the same time, Céline and her collaborators are carrying out other research to develop a two-in-one vaccine to protect against mastitis and bovine paratuberculosis—another disease of concern to dairy farmers, which is incurable and for which there is currently no treatment. Expanding Hands-On Agricultural Training Alberta’s government is investing more than $7 million to expand hands-on training, helping students build careers close to home. Agri-News, June 29, 2026

ural communities thrive when students can learn, train and work in communities where they live. That’s why Alberta’s government is investing more than $7 million in 2026-27 to expand and modernize training at Lakeland College, ensuring post-secondary infrastructure keeps pace with growing regional workforce demand. Funding will support upgrades and expansion of the beef yard, along with the relocation of horse pen facilities at the Vermilion campus. These improvements will expand training capacity, modernize learning spaces, and strengthen the connection between students, employers and the rural communities they support. “Institutions like Lakeland College keep rural communities strong by connecting Albertans to education and careers close to home. This investment strengthens those institutions, expands modern training spaces and builds Alberta’s workforce.” Myles McDougall, Minister of Advanced Education The project will enhance animal welfare and student learning. Originally built for 60 students and 100 cows, the beef yard now supports more than 80 students and 220 cows. Upgrades will bring facilities in line with current demand while supporting future
growth. The horse pen relocation will replace aging infrastructure with modern, purpose-built spaces designed to improve animal care, enhance safety and strengthen the quality of hands-on training. “Alberta’s agriculture sector depends on skilled people, strong producers, and practical training that reflects the realities of modern agriculture. 4-H CLUB EXCHANGE I'm very excited to be part of the 4-H exchange this summer! I, along with 8 members of the Montagneuse 4-H Multi Club and 4 members of Fairview 4-H Multi Club, will be hosting 13 4-H members from Quebec Canada. The Quebec members will arrive August 3, 2026 at the Grande Prairie airport. We will be introducing the Quebec members to the Peace Country way of life for 5 days. This includes touring each of the Alberta member’s farms, community service at
the Dawson Creek rodeo and visiting Historic Dunvegan. With many more places and activities planned we will be ready to rest each night in the Dave Shaw Memorial Complex, Hines Creek AB. August 8th, 2026 both Quebec and Alberta members will fly to Quebec. I’m so excited to learn about life and culture in Quebec with a firsthand experience! We will be exploring Eastern Quebec with members of the Hatley and Sawyerville 4-H clubs as our hosts. I want to thank our chaperones and parents for
making this trip a reality, you all put in so much time and energy. And thanks to the financial support from YMCA which pays for our flights and transportation to and from the airport. I want to thank everyone who has supported our fundraising this spring, think of it as an investment in the future leaders of the community. rgot is a fungal disease that can infect wheat, barley, oats, durum, rye and canary seed, as well as grassy weeds in your fields. Ergot bodies contain harmful alkaloids and should not be consumed by humans or fed to animals. Implementing proactive management strategies is crucial to minimize the risk of ergot contamination. While ergot infections don’t typically cause major yield losses, this disease poses a serious threat to your grain quality and market access. This cereal disease arises from infection by the fungus Claviceps purpurea. Ergot infects cereal crops when airborne spores of the fungus land on the plant’s flowers. These spores germinate on the surface of the flower, penetrating and colonizing the developing grain. This process results in the formation of a hard, dark structure called a sclerotium, which replaces the healthy grain kernel. The sclerotia bodies are toxic to humans and animals. Flowering or anthesis is the most critical time for ergot infection. Cool, wet weather conditions during flowering increase the risk. It is vital to monitor weather forecasts and field conditions closely during this period. If conditions are conducive to ergot development, steps to mitigate spread should be taken. Ergot is a grading factor for Canadian cereals, meaning its presence affects the grain’s quality assessment.

Even low levels of contamination can lead to downgrading, rejection of grain shipments and additional cleaning requirements. Be aware that some export markets for Canadian cereals have established maximum levels for ergot sclerotia and/ or ergot alkaloids in grain. Proactive management is key. Effective ergot management is not only crucial for producing safe and high-quality grain but also for ensuring access to domestic and international markets. Keep it Clean recommends the following best practices to manage ergot and help keep markets open for Canadian cereals: • Start with Ergot-Free Seed: Planting clean seed is the foundation of ergot management. Remember, there are no effective seed treatments to eliminate existing ergot contamination. If using saved seed, meticulous cleaning is essential. • Implement a Strategic Crop Rotation: Ergot sclerotia (the hard, black ergot bodies) can persist in the soil for approximately one year. A wellplanned crop rotation — moving away from susceptible cereals for at least one to two years — significantly reduces the carryover of ergot inoculum. Avoid planting spring cereals near winter cereals, as this can create a disease bridge. • Proactive Grass Weed Management: Many grassy weeds can also be hosts for the ergot fungus. Implement a robust weed control program to prevent these weeds from being a host for ergot that can infect your cereal crop.
