he Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has secured an African swine fever (ASF) zoning arrangement with the Philippines as part of Canada’s ongoing preparedness activities, helping maintain access to the Philippine market while the CFIA carries out its mandate to protect animal health. This arrangement is intended to allow trade to continue from ASF-free areas if ASF were ever detected in Canada. Under the arrangement, trade restrictions on Canadian live pigs, pork products and related commodities would be limited to the affected area, rather than applying to all of Canada. The Philippines is an important market for Canadian pork exports. In 2024, Canada exported approximately $279 million in pork and pork products to the Philippines. Although Canada is free of ASF, it continues to spread globally. ASF is not a food safety or human health risk, but it is a contagious and fatal disease in pigs. An outbreak would seriously impact Canada’s domestic and wild pig herds, pork producers and the broader economy. Securing zoning arrangements in advance of any ASF detection is an important part of Canada’s preparedness efforts. Canada continues to work closely with trading partners to support trade continuity while safeguarding animal health. The Philippines is a priority market under Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy. This arrangement reflects technical collaboration between the two countries. That cooperation was reaffirmed this past summer when Minister Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, met with the Philippines’ Secretary of Agriculture, Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., in Manila. Canada now has seven ASF zoning arrangements in place with the United States,

New Year’s Greetings from the Montagneuse 4-H Multi-Club

Happy New Year! This is Ella writing for the Montagneuse 4-H Multi Club. The club got started with our beef weigh-in on October 27th 2025. I took a heifer to weigh-in this year. I would like to thank the Ostrem’s for hosting weigh-in. And thank you Travis and Lauren for the delicious doughnuts, Wallace and Daina for Timbits and Lulu for the popcorn balls, coffee and hot cocoa. We also had our swine weigh-in on November 29th. Thank you Calder family for raising the piglets and hosting weigh-in. This is my first year doing a swine project and I named her Makin’ my sister named her pig Bacon! We’ve also started a Textile craft project in our club so I’ll be sharpening up my sewing skills! Coming up we have our club communications on January 31st. That’s all for now, Ella.

Finally, a Federal Budget and Other Seed Ramblings by Nick Sekulic, Prestville Farms Ltd., Rycroft AB Canada
A
long-awaited Federal budget has been tabled. Signalled for some time, it comes as no surprise that Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) will see a 15% budget reduction over the next three years. As a seed grower and retailer, I spend a great deal of time explaining the different agreements, covenants and restrictions that come with the purchase of new cereal and pulse varieties. During my close to 40 years of planting crops much has changed: Plant Breeders Rights (PBR), International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV), and the Seed Synergy Collaboration Project. All these initiatives have been factors in bringing about change in how we are governed and regulated in the use of new seed genetics. In the federal Agricultural Growth Act (2015) one of the key changes implemented through this legislation are amendments to the Plant Breeders’ Right Act (PBR ACT). These changes encourage increased investment in plant breeding in Canada and foster greater accessibility to foreign seed varieties for farmers. The amendments to the PBR Act came into force on February 27, 2015 and include provisions

that bring it in-line with the 1991 Act of the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV 91). Following the Agricultural Growth Act (2015) a Green paper and Seed Synergy White Paper were released in 2019 (a federal green paper is for discussion while a policy paper is called a white paper). The primary objectives of white paper were to stimulate innovation in the seed sector, modernize the seed regulatory framework and build the next generation seed organization for Canada. More than five years later, and through the chaos of the Covid era, a final policy paper was released this past July with 52 proposals to modernize our seed regulatory system. We have realigned the seed organizations into not one, but two entities, Seeds Canada and the long-standing Canadian Seed Growers Association (CSGA). Full disclosure: I am a feepaying seed grower member of the CSGA, and our farm has been a member, and I have been a Director of Seeds Canada, since its inception. My personal perspective on seed genetics and the reason I became a seed grower, was to access the best genetics for my commercial grain farm. The specific cereal and pulse varieties I had followed
through the registration cycle, at that time, were not going to be grown anywhere near my farming location in the Peace Region of NW Alberta. As a primarily export oriented production region and country we must maintain our global competitive advantage though seed genetics and production innovation. Are we adequately stimulating innovation in cereal and pulse genetics? Have we attracted a meaningful number of key global players in seed genetics to Canada? In my opinion, we have not! Key global players in this sector have left. Others have chosen to locate in the more lucrative US market to try to capture the opportunities in North America. Funds from the overpayment made by producers to the railways finds it way to fund some breeding. Even though this is supplemented with crop commission levy support, our public breeding programs have continued to shrink and, in some cases, close completely. The most recent budget cuts at AAFC and the signalling of a desire to streamline research with reduction in areas where the private sector and academic institutions are active suggest we need a more industry and commercial driven funding model to adequately fund the seed value chain. Coming out of the Seed Synergy consultation the sector settled on the Seed Variety Use Agreement (VUA) as the means to drive plant breeding investment. This is done by collecting a per acreage fee for the re-use of certified seed varieties that fall under this program (farmer privilege). The challenge with the implementation of this system is that varieties produced through AAFC, except for one oat variety in the East, is that AAFC intentionally keeps their varieties royalty free when used under farmer privilege. There is a concerted effort going on in the trade to try to have AAFC bred varieties use the VUA to ensure continued and adequate funding for their breeding

activities and, of course, level the playing field while bringing increased seed innovation to the market. I should note that farmer privilege is limited to the reuse of those seed genetics to the original entity purchasing the certified seed where a VUA or other restrictive covenant does exist such as the Midge Tolerant Stewardship agreement and others. This privilege does not extend to family members or cousins operating other farms or the neighbors who barter or conduct the illegal trade of such seed. This happens at a large scale. To recap, the following are the various models by which we sell seed to our customers: Variety Use Agreement (VUA) – When certified seed is purchased, the producer will be required to report through a web-based portal use or non use of seed grown from the original purchase, and if used for planting in subsequent years will pay a nominal fee per acre (typically $2 acre) as determined by the rights holder. Midge Tolerant Stewardship Agreement (MTW) – The Stewardship Agreement for Midge Tolerant Wheat limits the use of farm-saved seed to one gen-
eration past Certified seed. It’s a simple step that keeps the interspersed refuge system at the proper level, preventing build-up of resistant midge. Without the refuge, we risk losing the one and only tolerance gene. Syngenta Stewardship Agreement (SSA) – Syngenta Canada Inc. Stewardship Agreement outlines the terms under which growers may grow, and market technologies sourced from Syngenta. In the case of any cereal crops we sell from Syngenta this restricts the use of arm saved seed equal to the acreage planted for only the one year following the original planting. While Syngenta no longer has a breeding program in Canada, FP Genetics now manages the distribution of their seed in our market. Others – We are in discussion with some rights holders looking to bring some innovative seed genetics to the market for our region that may have their own unique restrictions including no reuse of any seed material for subsequent planting. I hope this clarifies some of the complexities of acquiring new cereal and pulse varieties for your farming operations and best of luck planning for the 2026 growing season. NH

Research Update on Perennial Forage 2025 Results from Fairview Funded by Results Driven Agriculture Program
Research (RDAR) and Rangeland Sustainability
Why This Study Matters Perennial forages including monocultures and grass–legume blends form the backbone of livestock feed in the Peace Region. With feed among the highest costs in beef production, choosing forage varieties with high yield, adequate nutritional value, and good stand persistence is essential for profitability. To support better decision-making, the Peace Country Beef & Forage Association established small-plot perennial forage trials at the Fairview Research Farm in 2020 and near DeBolt in 2021. These long-term sites are monitored annually to compare forage yield, quality, and moisture-use efficiency under regional growing conditions. Matching forage quality to cattle nutrient needs can improve production efficiency and reduce feed supplementation costs. This article focuses mainly on the top performers (in monoculture legumes, monoculture grasses, and mixtures) during the 2025 field season. What We Did

We have two Peace Region locations for testing perennial forages, Fairview (Fairview Research Farm, RGE 35) and DeBolt (in collaboration with Mark Pellerin, TWP Rd 740). Fairview site was seeded in June 2020, and DeBolt site was seeded in May 2021, using a custom Fabro small-plot drill with 9-inch row spacing. Both sites are for long-term monitoring of perennial forage mixtures, which could be grass-legume, grass-only or legume-only (Fairview = 24, DeBolt = 15) versus monocultures (Fairview =27 legumes and 38 grasses, DeBolt 20 legumes and 20 grasses). From the year following establishment, no dry fertilizers or manure have been applied to date. This year (2025), plots were harvested in June with a small-plot selfpropelled forage harvester to enable data collection on forage dry matter yield and quality (including protein, energy and digestibility). In addition, a regular soil volumetric water WATER-USE EFFICIENCY (WUE) content was taken using a FieldScout TDR350 Soil Moisture Meter. Next Steps • Long-term monitoring will continue into 2026 to track stand persistence, decline rates, and weed competition. • Ongoing analysis will help fine-tune mixture ratios for the best blend of tonnage, quality, and longevity.

Gait Assessment – Your veterinarian will observe your horse walking and trotting in a straight line and on a lunge line. The lunge line can help exaggerate more subtle abnormalities or show whether the lameness worsens when the limb is on the inside or outside of the circle. Based on the lameness observed, your vet may also have your horse do tight circles or back up. Flexion tests – Performed after the physical exam and gait assessment to further exaggerate a lameness to more accurately locate the area of discomfort. The vet or their assistant will hold a specific joint (e.g. the fetlock, hock, stifle) in a flexed position for 30-60 seconds, then have the horse trot off. If the lameness severity increases after a flexion test, your vet can further localize the affected area. Diagnostic Nerve Blocks – In some cases the flexion tests and gait assessment are enough to localize the affected area. When this is not the case nerve blocks can be used for further localization. Your vet will strategically inject a local anesthetic to temporarily numb specific areas of the leg. They will start at the foot and work upwards, blocking sections of the limb one at a time. The gait is re-evaluated after each block to pinpoint the source of the pain. Advanced Diagnostics – Once your vet has localized the area causing pain, further diagnostics may be recommended including radiographs (evaluates bones and joints) or ultrasound (assesses tendons and ligaments). These tools allow your vet to identify specific conditions such as arthritis, bone chips, tendon tears, or ligament injuries that are the root cause of the lameness. In some cases, additional imaging like MRI, CT, or nuclear scintigraphy may be needed, which would require referral to a specialty facility. Treatment Options – After your vet has diagnosed the cause of lameness, they will develop a treatment plan that is most suitable for your and your horse’s needs and goals. Some common options include: • Joint injections – there are many products currently available that have different mechanisms of action. These products include steroids, biologic therapies (e.g. IRAP, PRP, Pro-Stride, Alpha-2 macroglobulin, amnion-derived products), or synthetic injections like Noltrex. These treatments generally reduce inflammation and help restore joint health. ith the initial relaunch of four stores completed in Alberta, Peavey Mart announced today they are setting the stage for three additional locations to open in the spring of 2026. “The initial store opening plan included an eventual reopening of stores in Saskatchewan,” says Meagan Parisian, Leader of Marketing & eCommerce. “The locations that were chosen by the ownership group are reflective of a number of factors these communities hold, including the strength of the stores in these communities, an ease of access to the previously held storefronts, as well as how quickly we could expedite hiring and launch operations in the locations chosen.” Peavey Mart will relaunch two Saskatchewan locations in Assiniboia and Yorkton in March 2026. Hiring is currently underway for store personnel, and further information is available at peaveymart.com. Peavey Mart will also reopen it’s Red Deer location in April 2026, after renovations to the Gaetz Avenue storefront which opened in 2022. The renovated location will showcase a smaller footprint that will be more in line with other locations. This location will complement the four Alberta locations that opened in December 2025 (Spruce Grove, Westlock, Camrose, and Lacombe). Outside of the seven locations, no further deci-
sions or timelines have been made about other future locations. As Peavey Mart looks to open the new locations, it continues work on distributing merchandise to stores, with a clear emphasis on high quality, unique, and locally sourced items that highlight the Canadian entrepreneurial spirit. Stores continue to receive stock on a weekly basis, and customers can expect new and seasonal merchandise to be heading to stores regularly. “Our suppliers recognize that we hold ourselves to a high standard and expect to deliver a top-tier experience for our customers,” said Parisian. “They’re working with us to ship items to our Distribution Centre in Red Deer County, and in some cases directly to stores, as quickly as possible so we can fulfill these expectations.” Parisian added customers can expect stores to be stocked with the full assortment of products on or before March 1, 2026. FAO Launches International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026 to Accelerate Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Agrifood Systems Designated by the UN, the Year will highlight women’s essential roles and push for global action to tackle the structural barriers they face 05/12/2025, Rome

he Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) yesterday launched The International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026, a global campaign aimed at recognizing women’s indispensable yet often overlooked contributions to global agrifood systems and to galvanize efforts to close persistent gender gaps. Designated by the UN General Assembly in 2024, the International Year aims to spotlight the realities faced by women farmers and drive policy reforms and investment to advance gender equality, empower women, and build more resilient agrifood systems. FAO, together with the other Rome-based UN agencies – the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP) - will coordinate activities throughout 2026. Women make up a significant share of the world’s agricultural workforce and are indispensable across agrifood value chains — from production and processing to distribution and trade — playing a central role in household food security and nutrition. In 2021 agrifood systems employed 40 percent of working women globally - nearly equal to men. Despite this, women’s contributions remain undervalued and their working conditions are often more precarious: irregular, informal, part-time, low-paid, labour-intensive, and highly vulnerable. They continue to face systemic barriers, including limited access to land, finance, technologies, education, extension services, and participation in decision-making at all levels.
The Year was officially launched at a ceremony held on the sidelines of the 179th Session of the FAO Council. Opening remarks were delivered by FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero, who warned that progress on women’s empowerment in agrifood systems has stalled over the past decade. “The cost of inaction is enormous. We know from recent estimates that closing the gaps between men and women in agriculture could raise global GDP by one trillion dollars and reduce food insecurity for 45 million people,” he said. He stressed that the observance goes far beyond celebration, calling for “bringing policy attention to the multidimensional challenges they (women farmers) face, and promoting legal reforms and policy and programmatic action that allow women to have equal land rights, equal access to finance, to technology, to extension services, to markets, and to decision-making.” The event was co-organized by Jordan and Ireland, represented respectively by FAO Regional Goodwill Ambassador for the Near East and North Africa Princess Basma bint Ali and Maria Dunne, Assistant Secretary-General at Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. In her closing remarks, FAO Deputy Director-General Beth Bechdol emphasized that the needs of women farmers must remain a priority well beyond 2026. “Throughout 2026, the International Year will move from today’s sharing of personal stories and discussions to practical work — national policies, community partnerships, research, investment, and dialogue between farmers, cooperatives, governments, finance institutions, youth networks, and universities. The goal is simple: turn commitment into practice, and practice into measurable impact,” she said.
WHO IS A WOMAN FARMER? Women farmers work in diverse roles across agrifood systems and come from all backgrounds: young and older women, Indigenous women, women in local communities, women with disabilities, and refugee and displaced women. They are smallholder producers, peasants, agricultural laborers, fishers and fish workers, beekeepers, pastoralists, processors, traders, women in agricultural sciences, rural entrepreneurs, traditional knowledge holders, and more—whether in formal or informal work, with or without land ownership. Recent FAO reports - The Status of Women in Agrifood Systems and The Unjust Climate – underscore the scale of gender inequality and the disproportionate climate risks faced by women. Together, the reports highlight the structural barriers limiting women’s productivity, income, access to resources, and resilience.

• Women farmers typically work on smaller plots of land than men. Even when they manage farms of the same size, the gender gap in land productivity is 24 percent. • Each day of extreme high temperatures reduces the total value of crops produced by women farmers by three percent relative to men. • A 1° C increase in long-term average temperatures is associated with a 34 percent reduction in the total incomes of female-headed households, relative to those of male-headed households. • Women engaged in wage employment in agrifood systems earn 78 cents for every dollar that men earn. • The unpaid care work performed by women and girls contributes at least $ 10.8 trillion to the global economy annually. • Reducing gender disparities in employment, education, and income could eliminate 52 percent of the food insecurity gap which is consistently higher among women. • Empowering rural women through targeted development interventions could raise incomes for 58 million more people and boost resilience for 235 million. How to Check Bins and Bags for Spoilage
HOW TO CHECK BINS 1. Cycle. The best method, even with bin monitoring cables, is to remove about a third of the canola. This disrupts the moisture cycle and helps to stop any heating or spoilage that may have begun in the central core. While unloading, feel and smell canola as it comes out of the bin. Check for visual abnormalities such as sweating. Run another moisture and temperature test. In the absence of adequate temperature sensors, this is probably the only effective way to determine if core temperatures are still high in large storage structures. If canola has any hint of spoilage, consider cycling the whole bin.
2. Use bin monitoring cables. These give a quick assessment of temperature (and some also offer moisture) readings at nodes throughout the bin. One cable has a coverage diameter of 20 to 24 feet. Bins with a diameter greater than 24 feet will need at least three cables to adequately monitor grain temperature. Cables may not detect small hot spots, so cycling can offer some extra assurance. 3. Probes. Probing through doors or roof hatches may uncover hot spots near the bottom and top of the bin, but cannot show canola condition through the central core and all sides. Be careful and consider your own safety when climbing bins to probe grain. Reduce your risk of falling by using appropriate safety equipment such as a harness.
HOW TO CHECK BAGS If leaving bags for the winter, watch them regularly. Feel them for warm temperatures. Probe them if possible. Tape up any holes that may occur due to wildlife or any other damage. Spoilage in bags often starts around holes. Bags are suitable for short-term storage of tough canola. A Saskatchewan study from 2009 compared bag storage of canola at 12, 13 and 14 per cent moisture. At 14 per cent moisture, canola in the study did not cool down as expected when outside temperatures cooled, so growers emptied those bags in December. A more recent and intensive University of Manitoba study (part one, part two) came to the same conclusion. Canola at moisture levels above 12 per cent should

ll canola should be conditioned immediately after combining to cool it down, provide for consistent temperature throughout the bin and remove any moisture released through natural seed respiration that occurs in the first hours to weeks after harvest. After that, monitor bins closely during the first six weeks after harvest and then continue to check stored canola regularly until delivery. This is especially true for canola at higher risk of spoilage. The ideal situation for safe long-term storage is canola seed moisture of eight per cent of less and temperatures of 15°C or less. If stored canola temperatures plateau or start to rise while outside air cools through the winter, it can signal the start of spoilage. It only takes one small hot spot to start a chain reaction that can spoil a whole bin.

‘Alberta Ag-Plastic. Recycle It!’ Pilot Program Continues and Expands with Renewed Funding from the Government of Alberta cleanfarms.ca, December 15, 2025

That’s equal to approximately 260 semi-trailers full of grain bags and 38 semi-trailers full of twine–or enough twine to wrap 1.8 million large square hay bales. “Alberta Agriculture’s ongoing support of the pilot has allowed farmers to adopt more sustainable practices for plastic waste, while also helping to determine what an effective permanent program may look like,” says Assar Grinde, Chair of APRG. “The pilot has had great success with grain bags, and we are excited to build on the huge growth in twine collection volumes over the past year.” The renewed funding will be used to launch the second edition of the Great Twine Round-Up; a collection contest that encourages Albertans of all ages to collect used baler twine for recycling with cash prizes awarded to local charities and 4-H clubs. In the first year of the
contest, participants brought in an estimated 16,500 kg of used plastic baler twine for recycling. It’s estimated that up to 3,350 tonnes of bale wrap and silage plastic are used by cow-calf operations, cattle feeders, and dairy farms in Alberta each year, and their inclusion will contribute to the long-term success of the province-wide recycling program. The insights gained from this endeavour will directly inform the design of a future collection system across Alberta for bale wrap and silage plastic. “We’re proud to be working with the APRG, the Government of Alberta, Alberta Beef Producers, and all of Alberta’s hard-working ranchers and producers to continue evolving this program,” said Shane Hedderson, Cleanfarms Director of Western Canada. “As is the goal of all Cleanfarms programs, we aim to support farmers and contribute to the emerging circular economy in Alberta agriculture through this project.” NH

Launched in 2019, the program provides Alberta farmers with sustainable, practical solutions to manage used plastic baler twine and grain bags. Starting in 2026, collection programs for compacted silage plastic and bale wrap will be available in select regions of Alberta as part of the expansion of the ‘Alberta Ag-Plastic. Recycle It!’ pilot project. Developed by the Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group (APRG)—a coalition of recyclers, commodity groups, farmers, municipalities, and non-profits—the pilot is operated by Cleanfarms in partnership with APRG. Together, these organizations share a commitment to advancing responsible agricultural plastics management across the province. In addition to building on established operations, the funding will support the expansion of the program to include a project aimed at collecting used silage plastic and bale wrap in targeted regions of the province. Saddle Hills County 2026 Budget Highlight
S
addle Hills County remains focused on long-term stability, smart growth, ensuring that communities are well-positioned for the future. Council has approved in principle the 2026 Operating Budget, a $57.5 million financial plan that continues to strengthen essential services, support rural infrastructure, and invest in programs that enhance quality of life for residents. “This year’s budget focuses on maintaining the services our residents rely on while investing in projects that keep Saddle Hills County strong, connected, and resilient,” Reeve Gerry Richard went on to say, “Council is committed to building a County we are proud to call home.” The 2026 operating budget reflects a modest increase of just over $216,000 from the previous year. Public Works continues to represent a significant portion of the operating plan, ensuring roads, graveling, fleet operations, and engineering services remain well supported. Protective services also saw continued investment, with increased funding directed toward enforcement and fire protection to ensure reliable emergency response across rural areas. Agriculture remains a high priority, with ongoing support for the ALUS program and other initiatives that promote sustainable land use and growth within the farming community. The County’s commitment to safe, reliable water services remains evident throughout the budget. Water, wastewater, and solid waste services make up a considerable portion of annual operating costs; however, this year’s budget reflects a natural decrease in net expenses thanks to new revenue from the expanded waterline system and the recycling program’s launch. Community services—such as childcare supports, Nurse Practitioner services, and FCSS programming—remain stable, with increased investment in 2026 to ensure families have access to essential programs. Recreation funding will maintain and enhance County campgrounds and parks, contributing to the outdoor experiences residents and visitors enjoy throughout the year. Saddle Hills County’s dedication to community organizations remains strong. Through grants, partnerships, and ongoing support to local groups, more than $12 million will be directed into community-led initiatives and regional services that
enrich the lives of residents across the County. Council approved several financial increases to programs, including increased funding for rural water cistern grants, enhancements to the Rural School Staffing Supports Subsidy Program, and continued support for the Saddle Hills County Library Board, and an updated childcare subsidy rate for eligible employees and residents. Key regional partnerships will continue into 2026, including Project Aurora’s work to expand fibre internet connectivity, and support for the Central Peace Fire Rescue Commission as the new Spirit River Fire Hall moves forward. To fund major infrastructure and community commitments, the County will draw almost $9.9 million from reserves. Council has approved in principle a $50 million 2026 Capital Budget. A Capital Budget is funded through a combination of Federal and Provincial grants and reserve funding. Canadian agriculture producers often leave millions on the table yearly in grant funding they are unaware of at both the national and provincial levels. However, it has also extended to taking advantage of a wide source of funding to power its operations. In the last handful of years, Riverview Ranch has been able to secure more than $2 million in grant funding, said Tyler Torrie, whether it is from Scientific Research and Experimental Development, Alberta Innovates or Results Driven Agriculture Research. He encouraged more farmers to do the same, saying millions of dollars can go untapped in yearly funding that is available to producers. This past October at a field day, Torrie showcased virtual fencing and e-collars on 190 cattle spanning from Bow Island to Grassy Lake that was funded 75 per cent from the On-farm Climate Action Fund. Torrie uses the Business Benefits Finder on the Government of Canada website, as well as Alberta Business Grants as resources. Another useful tool is putting to work the inquisitive minds of agricultural university students through Riipen. Torrie estimates that Riverview Ranch has used dozens of university projects over the last two years that have benefited all facets of its agricultural and non-agricultural businesses. “They get university credit, you get labour. I get data analysis on my bee results,” he said. ”I’ve got a couple university students working on engineering problems and design work for the bees. I had a group of students work on a farm safety plan in regards to a prairie fire hazard.… “Pretty much anything you can think of, you can find university students that are in a program that’s relevant to what you’re trying to do. I give them letters of reference and recommendation afterwards, and I get a lot of great, valuable research and

Worst-case scenario, it doesn’t really go anywhere, but I didn’t pay for it.” Digging into these resources does require time, but putting the time equity into it can provide monetary benefits 10-fold. “If you have an idea and want to chase it, there’s going to be something out there for it,” he said. “There’s so many resources that make it so much easier to do those things if you’re willing to sit down for a couple hours and hammer out the grant paperwork. Yes, it’s work, but the cash you get from it is more than worth the hours you put into it.
