Should You Tank Mix Fungicide With Your Herbicide or Plant Growth Regulator? By Sheri Strydhorst, M.Sc., Ph.D., P.Ag., Agronomy Research Specialist | Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions

any cereal growers have considered applying, or have applied, a sub-lethal rate of fungicide (i.e. half rate of Tilt/propiconazole) tank-mixed with herbicide at early growth stages. This practice is considered a convenient, onepass operation for weed and disease management with relatively low cost. However, previous studies generally support the finding that fungicide applications at herbicide timings do not result in a yield benefit. There are also new questions about the value

of tank mixing plant growth regulators (PGRs) with fungicides to reduce the number of passes growers make over the field. However, the value of fungicide applications at this time is not well documented.

THE RESEARCH The Alberta Wheat Commission, along with Alberta Innovates and Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission recently funded research to look at the value of early season fungicide applications. Six fun-

gicide treatments were evaluated at eight site-years across Alberta in 2018 and 2019 to determine the optimum time for a single fungicide application. The treatments included early fungicide applications at BBCH 22-23 (herbicide timing), early to mid-season application at BBCH 30-32 (PGR timing), ‘traditional’ timing at BBCH 39-45 (flag leaf), head timing at BBCH 61-63 (fusarium head blight timing) and compared with a non-treated control. Experiments were conducted with the CWRS wheat cultivars ‘AAC Brandon’ and ‘AAC Viewfield’, which are commonly grown and have intermediate resistance to leaf spot diseases. The study findings and details are available at Asif et al. (2021).

DISEASE LEVELS RESULTING FROM EARLY SEASON FUNGICIDE APPLICATIONS The fungicide treatments at herbicide timing and the non-treated control had the highest leaf spot disease severities in early to mid-August. The fungicide treatments at herbicide and PGR timing had 54% and 42%, respectively, higher leaf spot disease severity compared with the flag leaf fungicide treatment. These results are consistent with previous Saskatchewan research from Duczek and Jones-Flory (1994). The result suggested that producers should avoid early fungicide applications at herbicide and PGR timing, as they do not result in significantly lower disease levels compared with the nontreated control. In addition to not effectively controlling disease later in the growing season, fungicide applications at herbicide and PGR timing may contribute to the development of fungicide resistance.

YIELD BENEFITS RESULTING FROM EARLY SEASON FUNGICIDE APPLICATIONS There were no significant yield differences between the non-treated control and fungicide applications at herbicide timing (BBCH 22-23) or fungicide timing (BBCH 30-32). Although tank mixing fungicides with herbicides or PRGs can reduce application costs, the lack of yield benefit reported in this research indicates that there is no economic benefit to these practices.

RECOMMENDATIONS The most economically beneficial practices were fungicide applications at flag leaf timing (BBCH 39-45) or Fusarium head blight timing (BBCH 61-63) when environmental conditions [higher relative humidity (65.4-74.0%) and an average 273 mm of precipitation] were conducive for disease development. Tank mixing fungicides with herbicides or PGRs is not recommended due to: • poor end-of-season disease control compared with a flag leaf timing fungicide application • lack of significant yield response • lack of economic returns • possibility for this practice to contribute to the development of fungicide resistance

ouncil has declared an agricultural disaster in the County of Grande Prairie due to ongoing and severe drought conditions and low soil moisture levels affecting the region. The decision comes at a critical stage in the growing season which is already showing significantly reduced hay harvests, poor tame pasture conditions, and marginal annual crop conditions. Reduced yields and quality are expected across the board for 2025. The effects of another difficult growing season are being felt in local communities. Council’s decision reflects significant concerns for the livestock industry, specifically related to feed resources headed into the fall and winter months. Lack of water for livestock is another increasing issue being reported, along with the presence of grasshoppers which are further pressuring and stressing crops this year. “Extended dry weather and drought conditions over the past two growing seasons have significantly impacted local agricultural businesses,” said Reeve Marshall. “By issuing this declaration, we are helping bring attention to the current severe drought condi-

tions impacting crop and livestock producers in the region.” The County joins other municipalities in Alberta and Western Canada with this declaration, urging the provincial and federal governments to take a coordinated approach to supporting the industry and individual producers. “Another poor year will worsen the challenging times producers in our municipality have faced in recent years, with many facing tough decisions on the future of their operations,” said Reeve Marshall. “It’s important that we present the seriousness of the situation to the provincial and federal governments to help ensure our producers receive the necessary support they require.” The County of Grande Prairie previously declared an agricultural disaster in 2024 due to poor crop yields because of extreme drought conditions.

rodeo, the sport he loved so dearly and worked so hard to make better. He competed in amateur rodeos and won the bull riding at Dawson Creek in 1978. But a full-time commitment as a pilot for his dad’s outfitting business made it necessary for him to quit riding bulls, a decision he called “the smartest thing to do although I never considered that cowboys always made the smartest decisions”. Terry judged his first Pro Rodeo in 1993 and enjoyed judging everything from small rodeos to the biggest and best, both in Canada and the US. “It is with a heavy heart that we recognize the passing 2024 CFR PHOTO BY of our longtime Friend, Board Member, Rodeo Chairman, BILLIE-JEAN DUFF teacher of the art of Rodeo to our summer volunteers & workers and one of the great ones, Terry Cooke,” noted the Dawson Creek Exhibition’s Connie Patterson. “Terry was born and raised in the Peace River Country, grew up tough and was always there first with a helping hand. Along with the love of his life Kimeal. No words can express our sadness at this time.” As for his time in the CPRA President’s chair, Terry Cooke referenced several areas that he was proud to have been a part of, among them, development of the Maple Leaf Circuit, growth of the Judging program, a return to financial stability and positivity within the Association, the addition of Breakaway Roping to the CPRA and the return of the CFR to Edmonton for its 50th Anniversary. Association CEO Denny Phipps comments on Terry’s passing, “Terry Cooke dedicated much of his life to the sport of rodeo and the CPRA. He was a man of honesty and integrity who always let you know where you stood; he was more than a leader, he was a friend. orse owners and vets have an ongoing battle with sarcoids as the cause is not completely understood and treatment can be very frustrating as there is a high recurrence rate. They are believed to be caused by the bovine papillomavirus 1 and 2. Environmental and genetic factors are also believed to play a role. There are 6 different forms which vary from mild to highly locally invasive; • 1) occult - this is a circular, flat, hairless area • 2) verrucose - this is a scabby, solid nodule that can form over large areas • 3) nodular - this is multiple solid nodules of various sizes that can become ulcerated and bleed • 4) fibroblastic - this is a fleshy lesion that bleeds easily • 5) malevolent - this is a rare, aggressive form that can be extremely locally invasive • 6) mixed - this has characteristics of one or more forms Sarcoids can be suspected based on clinical appearance but a biopsy is required for a definitive diagnosis. Treatment often feels ineffective due to the high recurrence rate. There are many options for treatment but often multiple methods are needed. Surgical excision, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy are the mainstays of treatment. Treatment is usually most successful if it is caught early when lesions are small. Coupons can be used to buy fresh, nutritious and locally grown food at more than 100 participating B.C. farmers’ markets. “This program helps people on a low income get fresh and nutritious food grown by local farmers,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “I’m so thankful farmers in B.C. participate in this program, helping to build community and sharing the bounty of their hard work.” This year, the Province is providing the program with $4.25 million. Households enrolled in the program can receive as much as $27 a week in coupons to use at participating farmers’ markets for as long as 16 weeks. diploma program. Because the program caters to students with a wide range of ag backgrounds, some have had more experience with tractors and combines than others, says Lee. However, the platform has challenged even those with extensive real-life experience. “This year, many of the students who were going onto the simulator were quite confident,” she says. “During the exercises, they got stuck. So they were humbled a little bit … Some of our students have come from grain farms, so they haven’t operated a baler or anything like that. “Each student learned a little something from the experience, regardless of their starting point.” Even though student Karson Wasylciw has been helping run combines with his grandfather since he was seven, he still sees the simulator’s value for both himself and other students in the program. “I know for myself, when I get in someone else’s piece of equipment, the first worry is always not messing up and making sure that everything runs smoothly once I’m done with it,” says Wasylciw, who’s working towards taking over his grandparents’ portion of the

ost-secondary ag students with a northern Alberta school have been using a computerized simulator to learn how to properly run tractors and combines. Both students and staff at Northwestern Polytechnic in Fairview are praising the Tenstar Simulator for its capacity to safely build students’ operational skills with expensive ag machinery and better prepare them for real-life field scenarios. “When you go onto a farm, your employer or your dad are not going to be confident putting you in cold on the brand new piece of equipment,” says Shaela Lee, the agriculture program coordinator with the school, which bills itself as the largest post-secondary institution in northern Alberta. “We would rather you come here, get hands-on in a simulated environment, crash this thing, refine your skills and then you’re a little bit more familiar with the equipment before you get into the huge equipment that can be daunting and costs lots and lots of money.” The simulator — which was purchased in January — is intended for students in the polytechnic’s recently-established two-year agriculture operations

34 The Northern Horizon, August 1, 2025 “It is so similar that I think you can get fairly confident on there and be able to get in a different piece of farm equipment and have no issues running it.”

WEATHER ADJUSTABLE Lee says the Tenstar is a good fit for the program, which was designed for the winter months to give students a chance to take part in fall harvesting and return for spring seeding. The simulator also removes the risks of firing up a real-life tractor in freezing winter conditions. A few of the 50 tractor-related exercises Tenstar can replicate include baling, tillage and spreading fertilizer. It supports basically “anything you can pull behind a tractor,” says Kristy Honing, chairperson of animal health technology at the polytechnic. “There’s a screen on the back too so that when you turn around, you can look at what’s behind you. No kidding — if there’s a rock that you’re going over, the

seat will move as well.” The combine component is a little different, says Lee. Although it doesn’t have as many options as the tractor sim, users have the ability to adjust for various weather and environmental conditions. “During harvest, the weather changes constantly. From dusk to dawn the weather can shift. So you’re able to adjust the simulator to test the students and give them different scenarios.”

WIDE-RANGING APPLICATIONS Manufactured by the Swedish-based Tenstar Simulation company, the simulator is a self-contained unit compatible with a host of simulation software. Although it comes with a choice of configurations, the machine purchased by Northwestern Polytechnic looks similar — and to an extent functions in a similar way to — an updated version of the sit-down arcade racing games from the 1980s and ‘90s.

Its applications are not limited to agriculture. According to the company website, the Tenstar is also marketed to schools and companies that train in the construction, transportation, traffic and forestry industries. “There was a week where some of the health students came and were driving ambulances on it,” says Wasylciw. “There’s are quite a few different pieces of machinery that you can get on there. We just have the tractor and combine for ourselves, but it looked like you could go right down to cranes and excavators and stuff.” Tenstar Simulators are interoperable with other machines under its platform, making options potentially unlimited minus budgetary considerations. “If there were two simulators, you could sync them together so one could be on the combine portion and one could be on the tractor,” says Lee. jmelchior@farmmedia.com

WHEAT MIDGE LIFE CYCLE Adult wheat midge emerges as wheat fields start heading. The adults then lay their eggs on the heads of the wheat. The new generation of wheat midge hatch and reach the larva stage while remaining in the heads of the wheat. The larva then eat the heads of the wheat before overwintering in the soil.

MONITORING When monitoring for wheat midge populations we use sticky traps with pheromones. The sticky traps are set up at the same height as the wheat heads since the midge eats the heads of the plant. If populations are above the threshold, producers may choose to spray the field. Spraying is most effective if done at night when the midge are most active.

ECONOMIC THRESHOLD A wheat field reaches its economic threshold for wheat midge when 1 adult is found per 4-5 wheat heads. Crop rotation is an important preventative measure for ensuring populations of wheat midge don’t increase in a field. Since wheat midge larva overwinter in soil and emerge the next summer, it is important to rotate in different crops for at least two years to allow populations to decrease.

When Do I Turn Out My Cows? Managing spring pastures during and after drought. BCRC, February 28, 2024

eef producers will soon be making grazing plans for turning their herds out to spring pastures. While drought planning should be a routine part of the development of short- and long-term grazing plans, many beef cattle herds have withstood successive years of drought. This has prompted producers to hone in on their management skills to make the best use of their pasture forage and carefully maintain carryover to prevent prolonged damage. The question of ‘when can I turn my cows out?’ is an important one, especially for those with dwindling hays stacks or for producers purchasing feed. Dr. Edward Bork is a Professor of Rangeland Management in the faculty of Agricultural, Life, and Environmental Sciences at the University of Alberta. He says that, aside from spring rainfall, how your pastures looked when you brought cattle in last fall may be the best indicator of how they will perform in spring. “The better condition the pasture was in October, the faster it will recover,” Bork explains.

REDUCE THE LONG-TERMIMPACT OF DROUGHT With high winter feed costs, it may be tempting for producers to place cattle in pastures sooner than they normally would, but Bork cautions to be aware of potential long-term consequences. He points out that when we stress forages, we not only affect the above-ground growth but the below-ground root system as well. “Deep roots require the most energy to maintain so they are the first to go,” says Bork, which means that when those roots are not maintained, the plant can lose its ability to draw from deep soil moisture reserves. Those deep roots store energy to keep the plant active during a drought and are also important for long-term survival. Native and tame plants have different root systems. In some cases, native plants appear to bounce back from drought quicker, because as long as they are healthy, they have much deeper roots than many tame species, Bork explains. As enticing as it may be to turn cattle out early, or in some cases even just at a “normal” time, producers should consider holding off if their pastures have been stressed recently. “By managing pastures cautiously in the short term, we can prevent having to deal with drought-related issues for the next 10 years,” says Bork. Avoiding long-term damage to plant health and root

systems will help prevent erosion and even reduce a pasture’s risk for weed encroachment.

“WHEN DO I TURN MY COWS OUT IN THE SPRING?” Bork shares some tips for knowing when to turn cattle out, and how to make decisions that will support and maintain the long-term productivity of your pastures: Know your carrying capacity: Be realistic with the amount of forage you have and develop your grazing plan accordingly. Use regional range health guidelines or the BCRC’s Carrying Capacity Calculator to estimate the amount of forage available and how many animals a pasture can support. Wait until the three-leaf stage: Using plant height is not a good way to determine readiness to graze as plants can vary greatly by height, especially in the early stages. Instead wait until plants have three leaves to start grazing. This gives the plant time to build the reserves it needs for long-term survival. A common grazing rule of thumb is that for every one day you wait to graze in the spring you save two days in the fall. Match your grazing plan to your pasture type: If pos-

sible, graze tame pastures prior to native pastures. Tame pastures are generally more grazing tolerant, and may be quicker to green up in spring, providing valuable early grazing. In contrast, native grasslands often take longer to reach peak production and therefore should be deferred longer if that is an option. Pay attention to litter: Litter is the standing or fallen dead plant residue left remaining in a pasture. Bork points out that litter serves multiple purposes on prairie landscapes by conserving rain and snow melt but can also be part of the forage reserve. Pastures with abundant litter will require less recovery and can be accessed earlier in the season than those where there is little or no litter remaining. Grasslands without litter may produce 25-60% less forage than grasslands with adequate litter, says Bork. Pastures with reduced litter lose moisture through evaporation and runoff and are at a higher risk of sun and wind exposure. Look backward: how was your forage managed in the previous year? If certain pastures were left in poor condition last fall, plan to use those in the following grazing season to allow ample time for rest and recovery. Continued on page 46

PUBLIC NOTICE VILLAGE OF HINES CREEK ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND ENHANCEMENT ACT NOTICE OF APPLICATION In accordance with the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, the Village of Hines Creek has applied to Environment and Protected Areas for the renewal of the approval for the Hines Creek Waterworks System. The system is located in the quarter-section of NW 32-83-4-W6M. It consists of a surface water source from Jack Creek, along with a raw water intake structure, raw water transmission mains, and raw water reservoir cells equipped with aeration. The waterworks system also includes treated water reservoirs, a distribution network that supplies potable water to the Village of Hines Creek and provides bulk water supply to potable water haulers. n June 4, 2025, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) detected avian paramyxovirus type 1 (APMV-1) results from a commercial poultry operation of pigeons in the Fraser Valley in British Columbia (BC). Movement controls were placed on the infected premises (IP) after confirmatory testing was completed at the CFIA’s National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease laboratory (NCFAD). The virus was identified to be a strain of PPMV-1 adapted to pigeons consistent with Newcastle disease. This is the first case of Newcastle disease in Canada since 1973.

The CFIA will declare a primary control zone (PCZ), a geographical boundary with applied movement restrictions, when we detect Newcastle disease in poultry within a zone or within 10 km of an infected premises. These zones will require movement controls and permitting for those looking to move birds or bird products through the zone boundaries.The establishment of primary control zones is an important measure for maintaining international trade with some countries for producers outside of PCZs, and resuming trade for producers inside PCZs after a control zone has been revoked. Newcastle disease is a viral disease that can affect a wide variety of avian species, both wild birds and domestic fowl. Newcastle disease is mainly transmitted by direct contact with diseased or carrier birds. Infected birds can shed the virus in feces, contaminating the environment where it survives for days in litter, feed, water, soil, carcasses, eggs, and feathers, and can also spread via contaminated materials and equipment.

Based on the current understanding of the risk Newcastle disease poses to the poultry sector, the CFIA has determined that depopulation of the infected domestic pigeons and thorough cleaning and disinfection of the premises must be completed. These response actions will help to prevent the spread of the virus to commercial poultry operations in the surrounding area. The CFIA conducts inspections and has monitoring and testing programs in place to prevent and control the spread of diseases to the livestock and poultry sectors. In all cases where federally-regulated diseases are suspected or confirmed, the goal is to take appropriate disease control measures while minimizing disruptions to producers. The CFIA works closely with affected producers, industry associations and the province to support producers in returning to normal operations as quickly as possible. The Compensation for Destroyed Animals and Things Regulations will guide compensation payments for the affected producer.

Continued from page 37 Use rainfall rather than snow as your indicator of moisture recharge: Although looking at the plants and pastures should be your first indicator for forage growth potential, many beef producers may look to soil moisture levels to help determine pasture turnout. Bork points out that while snow can contribute to moisture recharge, this is not a certainty and may have a limited effect on forage recovery due to its tendency to evaporate (with chinooks, for example), or run off if soils are frozen. “Up to seventy percent of our precipitation on the prairies comes from rainfall in the growing season as opposed to snow, meaning that each year our forage growth is closely tied to the occurrence of May and June rainfall.” Bork is quick to note that when soil moisture is severely depleted by drought the prior year, spring growth will be even more dependent on timely rainfall. Be ready to adapt: Recognize that grazing plans made in early spring are a moving target and will need to be adjusted based on rainfall, heat, and

other environmental factors. Monitor pastures throughout the grazing season and consider what potential back-up plans might need to be implemented to ensure pastures are managed for drought resilience.

“IF THE PASTURE ISN’T READY, WHAT DO I DO?” If producers are faced with drought conditions again, pastures will benefit from extended recovery time. It might be necessary to implement some early steps to prevent long-term damage to pastures. Consider alternative feeds: Are there alternative feeds or byproducts such as soybean hulls, beet pulp, pellets, screenings, or other feed sources that can be used to extend the winter-feeding season or as supplements on pasture? Annual forages may fill the gap: Annual forages can be grazed four to six weeks after seeding and can often be stocked heavily. This strategy may help to alleviate pressure on grasslands, thereby

Determine if destocking is necessary: Making the decision to cull is never an easy one but it can help to reduce reliance on stressed pastures and aid in faster recovery. Shorten the breeding season: By shortening your breeding season and pulling bulls sooner you are selecting for cattle that rebreed earlier, tightening up your calving season, and may be able to take advantage of higher grasser market prices for open heifers. This can help with culling decisions. Managing grasslands through drought is not an easy task, but having a plan going in, monitoring pastures and being willing to adapt as the weather changes can prevent pasture decline. Facing pasture productivity challenges head-on can help producers be better poised for recovery and reap the rewards when moisture is abundant.
