CPKC Ends 2025-2026 Crop Year Setting Annual Canadian Grain Record cpkcr.com, August 4, 2026

anadian Pacific Kansas City (TSX: CP) (NYSE: CP) (CPKC) said today it has broken its all-time volume record for transporting Canadian grain and grain products by moving 30.66 million metric tonnes (MMT) during the 20252026 crop year. This new record annual volume exceeded the previous record set in the 2020–2021 crop year by approximately 72,500 metric tonnes. “Our team of exceptional railroaders reliably delivered the largest Canadian grain crop in history with consistency throughout the crop year,” said John Brooks, CPKC Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Our dedication to service excellence, paired with solid execution by our customers and terminal operators, led to a crop year that saw more Canadian grain and grain products move on our network than ever before. This performance illustrates our long-standing commitment to the safe and efficient transportation of Canadian grain.” The total volume transported in the 2025-2026 crop year was 11 percent higher than the previous crop year, 16 percent higher than the three-year average, and 20 percent higher than the five-year average. Throughout the crop year, CPKC set records for Canadian grain transportation in the first and second quarters of 2026. Monthly records were also set in January, February, April, May and June 2026. “Continued investment across the grain supply chain is unlocking more capacity for Canadian agriculture,” said Elizabeth Hucker, CPKC Vice President, Sales & Marketing Bulk. “Our customers’ investments in 8,500-foot-capable elevators, combined with CPKC’s ongoing investment in our network, assets and operations, are enabling more efficient trains and stronger end-to-end performance. This shared commitment is helping move record amounts of Canadian grain to market safely, reliably and efficiently, while positioning the supply chain for continued growth.” Looking ahead to 2026–2027, CPKC is prepared to maintain this momentum by continuing to leverage the strength of CPKC’s powerful North American network in

service of our customers as we offer expanded route options and market access for Canada’s grain shippers. Mixed Animal Veterinary Practice - A Students Perspective Written by Caily Mellott – 4th year WCVM Student

hen people find out I’m a fourth-year veterinary student on rotation here at the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic mixed animal practice, the first question I usually hear is: “What does it mean to be on rotation?” In short, in the final year of veterinary school, students leave the classroom and spend their time training in real veterinary clinics and hospitals under the supervision of licensed veterinarians. These placements are called “rotations” and encompass full immersion in day-to-day veterinary practice. During my rotation at Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic, I’ve gone from assisting in small animal surgery in the morning to delivering calves in the middle of the night. Mixed animal practice means caring for dogs, cats, horses, cattle, and occasionally even the unexpected patient like a tortoise. So what does a rotation look like for a student in a mixed animal clinic?

CAILY MELLOTT Dr. Caily grew up on an acreage just outside of 100 Mile House, BC where she spent her childhood playing hockey, horseback riding, participating in 4-H, and caring for her family's horses, dogs, cats, and the occasional chicken. As a teenager, she worked on a local guest ranch, where she found her passion for veterinary medicine. After high school, Caily moved to Vancouver to earn a Bachelor of Science in Animal Biology at UBC while gaining experience in a local veterinary clinic. She then attended the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in Saskatoon, SK. During veterinary school, she worked at a mixed animal practice in Williams Lake, BC, and completed a fourthyear clinical rotation at Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic.

The welcoming team, diverse caseload, and strong agricultural community made Dawson Creek the ideal place to begin her career. Caily enjoys all aspects of mixed animal practice, with special interests in cattle, equine, surgery and emergency medicine. Outside of work, she enjoys horseback riding, hiking, hockey, CrossFit, and downhill skiing. She, her partner, her horses, and their miniature Dachshund, Carlos, are excited to call Dawson Creek home and look forward to getting to know the community and caring for its animals.

Some days begin in the surgery suite. As a senior veterinary student, I’m no longer just observing but instead I am actively participating under the supervision of experienced veterinarians, building hands-on skills while contributing to patient care. That might mean assisting with a routine spay or neuter, helping close surgical incisions, or interpreting dental X-rays during a professional cleaning. February happens to be Dental Awareness Month, and dental procedures are more involved than many people realize. We take full-mouth radiographs, examine each tooth carefully, and address painful disease below the gumline, not just what’s visible on the surface. Other surgeries are more urgent. I’ve assisted with eye removals for painful glaucoma, abdominal explorations for internal bleeding, and mass removals. While these cases can be serious, they often provide a chance to relieve pain, address lifethreatening conditions, and give patients a chance at a good quality of life. After the routine surgeries are complete, we move on to seeing medical appointments. These appointments can include itchy dogs with allergies, cats with urinary tract infections, senior pets needing wellness exams, and energetic puppies coming in for booster vaccines. A large part of our job is education: discussing nutrition, preventative care, parasite control, and helping owners recognize early signs of illness. If a dog comes in lame, we perform a thorough orthopedic exam, checking joints, assessing gait, and sometimes taking radiographs to identify injuries. If a cat isn’t eating, we may run bloodwork or take abdominal X-rays to look for blockages or other concerns.Not every case has a happy ending. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we help families say goodbye to a beloved companion. These are never easy moments, but they are an important and compassionate part of veterinary care. Supporting both the animal and the family during those times is something I’ve learned to approach with empathy and respect. Mixed animal practice doesn’t stop at the clinic doors. On-call shifts can mean heading out to a farm late at night for a difficult calving. I’ve assisted with twin deliveries, performed epidurals in cows, and helped reposition calves that weren’t entering the birth canal correctly. In some cases, when a calf is too large or improperly positioned, we perform a cesarean section to deliver the calf. Beyond calving, herd health work can include pregnancy checking cows and heifers, performing breeding soundness exams on bulls, treating uterine infections, and managing prolapse cases. Preventative care at the herd level plays a major role in both animal welfare and producer livelihood.Equine calls add yet another layer of variety. I’ve assisted with dental floats, evaluated lameness cases, and taken radiographs of neck and limb injuries. In one case, we assessed a horse with significant neck pain and abnormal head carriage. Careful examination and imaging helped to diagnose a fracture and guide our next steps. In another case, we repaired a hernia under general anesthesia. One of the most important lessons of our rotations is perspective. Veterinary medicine is not just about procedures or diagnoses it’s about relationships. It’s about building trust with pet owners, supporting farmers, and working collaboratively with technicians and mentors. Every case involves both an animal and the people who care deeply about it. It’s also about prevention. Many of the cases we see, from severe dental disease to complicated calvings can sometimes be minimized with early intervention and regular veterinary involvement. As a fourth-year student, I am refining technical skills: suturing, interpreting radiographs, performing physical exams, and developing treatment plans. But I am also learning softer skills such as communication, compassion, and clinical judgment. Mixed animal practice is unpredictable, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. And while no two days look the same, every day reinforces why I chose this profession in the first place. Because whether it’s a family dog, a newborn calf, or a performance horse, the goal remains the same: to support healthier animals and the people who love and depend on them. NH

University Of Idaho Wheat Breeder Discovers Genetic Mutation Associated With Yield Gain Research findings should help wheat breeders boost yields, expedite variety development ABERDEEN, Idaho, July 30, 2026

niversity of Idaho scientists have discovered a naturally occurring genetic mutation in wheat associated with a 5% to 10% yield increase. U of I College of Agricultural and Life Sciences researchers led by wheat breeder Jianli Chen, based at the Aberdeen Research and Extension Center, have screened germplasm, or collections of genetic material, including a panel of spring wheat varieties developed by breeders in the Pacific Northwest, for the mutation associated with plant flowering and increased yield. They confirmed the mutation in several high-yielding lines, including UI Gold, a hard white spring wheat variety

Chen’s program released in 2022, and several new experimental lines. “Because we found this gene mutation and developed molecular markers, we can screen lines for it,” Chen said. “I think this marker will be implemented by a lot of breeding programs.” The mutation is a nucleotide deletion, meaning a small piece of DNA is missing. Researchers found the deletion was associated with later flowering and more spikelets — the clusters of flowers that develop into grain along a wheat head. Those traits can contribute to greater yield. Chen and her team have isolated a locus — or a specific position on a chromosome where a gene or genetic marker is located — associated with the beneficial deletion. A five-year, $15 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) funded the research. Led by the University of California, Davis, the project brought together researchers from 22 institutions across the country. Chen’s program received spending authority for $537,644 and built upon progress made during two prior collaborative USDA-NIFA grants. Chen’s program uses genomic selection, a breeding method that uses thousands to millions of DNA markers spread across a plant’s complete set of genetic material to predict which wheat lines are most likely to have desirable traits. As part of the most recent USDA-NIFA grant, Chen and her team also validated a faster, less expensive method of screening wheat lines for yield and traits associated with it. “Instead of waiting several years to measure grain yield in field trials, wheat breeders can use a genomic-selection model to predict which lines are most likely to be high-yielding,” Chen said. The traditional approach to yield-related genomic selection compares wheat lines with a platform of 90,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). An SNP is a variation at a single position in a DNA sequence among individuals. “Once SNP associations are found with traits, it’s easier to find the genes,” Chen said. Chen and her team confirmed that a platform with just 4,000 SNPs was as effective as the larger platform at predicting yield and related traits. The streamlined approach has saved Chen’s program $60 per sample in testing costs. Chen plans to test the 4,000 SNP platform for other traits, such as drought tolerance and baking quality. NH

STRATEGY 2: CHOOSING THE RIGHT TILLAGE PRACTICES

Soil compaction creates a hostile environment for your crops by reducing pore space in the soil. When soil particles are pressed together, the critical pathways for air, water, and roots are diminished or eliminated. This directly impacts your yields as roots struggle to penetrate dense soil layers. The effects of compaction on your crops are both immediate and long-lasting. Plants growing in compacted soil develop shallow, restricted root systems that can’t access deeper nutrients or moisture. The fertilizers you apply may wash away instead of being absorbed, wasting money and potentially causing environmental problems. Even naturally occurring soil nutrients remain inaccessible when roots can’t grow properly through dense soil layers. The biological health of your soil deteriorates under compaction. Earthworms and beneficial microorganisms that normally improve soil structure can’t survive in oxygen-depleted, compacted environments. This creates a downward spiral where soil becomes less capable of self-repair over time.

he Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade, and Luis Jaramillo, Ecuador’s Minister of Production, Foreign Trade, and Investments, have signed the Canada-Ecuador Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Today’s signing marks an important milestone in Canada’s efforts to diversify trade and create new opportunities for Canadian businesses. It also reflects Canada and Ecuador’s shared commitment to strengthening their trade and investment relationship and bringing the agreement into force as soon as possible. Ecuador is Canada’s sixth-largest merchandise trading partner in South America, with two-way merchandise trade reaching $2 billion in 2025, a 2.9% increase from the previous year. By eliminating tariffs and reducing trade barriers, the FTA will improve market access for Canadian exporters, enabling businesses to grow, create good jobs, and generate long-term economic benefits for workers, businesses, and consumers in both countries. Following the signing of the agreement, Canada and Ecuador will each complete their respective domestic ratification processes. The FTA will enter into force after ratification procedures are complete.
