Connecting students with ag The Government of Canada is working with industry to help raise awareness, understanding and appreciation of agriculture among young Canadians. The agriculture and food sector is one of Canada’s key growth industries and the opportunities for youth are endless. Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister, Lawrence MacAulay, announced today a one-year investment of up to $567,786 for Agriculture in the Classroom Canada (AITC-C) to develop and deliver educational resources about the agriculture and agri-food sector to primary and secondary students across the country, and to promote career opportunities in the sector. This federal investment is funded through Growing Forward 2’s AgriCompetitiveness Program, under the Fostering Business Development stream, which supports activities that nurture entrepreneurial capacity in the agriculture sector through the development of young and established farmers, farm safety, skills, and leadership. “Educating students about the importance of agriculture will contribute to a stronger, sustainable, Canadian agricultural industry. This initia-
tive will provide students with information about the importance of agriculture in Canada and will help create opportunities to empower young future leaders in the sector,” noted Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. Christa Wright, Chair of Agriculture in the Classroom Canada, agrees. “We are absolutely delighted with this new partnership with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through Growing Forward 2, to champion agriculture education across the nation. AITCC’s inquiry-based, curriculum -linked resources and initiatives, delivered through its provincial member organizations, will affect real advancement in the sharing of Canada’s agriculture and food story,” she said. “This funding will assist AITC-C to capitalize on Canadians’ interest in how their food is produced, by providing accurate, balanced and current teaching tools on our agri-food system.” Agriculture in the Classroom Canada is a national, not-for-profit organization that has been operating across the country since February 1, 2015, delivering accurate, balanced and current, curriculum‐linked resources on the agriculture and food industry. Canada’s agriculture and food industry is a key driver of the Canadian economy and a highperforming sector in today’s global marketplace, contributing over $100 billion annually to the gross domestic product (GDP) and employing one out of every eight Canadians.

At Tofield I stop to chat to Doug Verstaete, owner and manager of Beaverhill Auction services. A 40 minute drive southeast of Edmonton – Beaverhill auction is housed here in quaint Beaver County and has become for sheep and goat producers in western Canada a key market destination since its inception in 2004. At its peak on market day a 15 member crew is busy organizing the selling of an average of 1,000 head of animals with sales held all year round on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month from January to July and pace picking up weekly to a 1500-head average from August to December except for holidays. Although most animals arrive on sale day, Sunday receiving hours are from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

not in any way mar the pristine sunshine that wields absolute mastery over the skies – though a stark reprieve from the previous day as locals tell me a fierce winter gale had blown through and in short duration I was told blowing snow had almost diminished visibility at one point!
I ask Doug about marketability unique to British Columbia and learn that Beaverhill Auction is a preferred market option for many small
scale producers in the province who opt to sell late summer lambs off grass in hopes of gaining a firmer market incentive prior to the usual autumn run. The Auction receives most of its B.C. ovine populace from the Peace Region although animals arrive from most locales throughout the province including Prince George, Vanderhoof and Kamloops. Doug is appreciative of producer support and consistency. He points out that the Auction strives to maintain a robust contingent of an average 12 buyers – from local butchers to meat packers on the West Coast, Ontario and Quebec. With a commission fee that the Auction incurs along with shipping cost, Doug maintains his confidence in a strong buyer presence yielding a maximum return for producers and in the same capacity works to organize gathering stations on several farms in the Peace Region – lessening the shipping hurdle somewhat. Doug adds that in the near future he’d like to see transportation improve by exploring the use of social media and Facebook where producers can flock together to share information on when and where animals can be gathered for shipment. He hopes this will better facilitate the roundup of animals in a timely and consistent manner. Doug can be reached at 780.777.4540.

Parched or Saturated?
Grain markets are mostly in the green this morning as some solid export data and fresh production concerns are getting the bullish pacing around the pen again. Strategie Grains cut its forecast for most crops in Europe due to some hotter temperatures lately, pegging the soft wheat crop at 141.6M tonnes (-1.1M tonnes from the last estimate, still 4% better than last year’s crop), the E.U. barley cop at 58M tonnes (-1.6M tonnes, -3% yearover-year), and the European corn crop at 60M tonnes (-100,000MT but the same as last year’s harvest).[1] The most recent Saskatchewan crop report shows that most crops are developing normally or ahead of schedule but oilseeds are the slowest, with 44% of acres behind normal progress.[2] Canola and soy oil got a boost yesterday as it’s expected that the U.S. EPA will release new biofuel requirements soon, helping the quota for advanced biofuels (corn-based biofuel needs are expected to stay the same). Wheat prices are back in the green this morning, which continues to impress most players, especially considering that the winter wheat harvest is ramping up, letting on that there are certainly some quality challenges this year. More simply, while we’ve been saturated with supply the last few years with average quality, much like parts of the Northern Plains, the pipeline is feeling much more parched than what we’ve been used to. U.S. soybean exports for last week could continue to be viewed as bullish as total commitments are now sitting at 106% of June’s W.A.S.D.E. forecast for total-marketing-year exports, meaning the U.S.D.A. will have to up the ante in their July report. On the domestic front, N.O.P.A. crush numbers surprised the market to the upside with 149.25M bushels getting processed in May. This was much better than the 143.2M bushels the market was expecting and the 2nd best May on record but still 2% below the actual record set last year of 152.3M bushels (as well as the 4th consecutive month that this production didn’t beat it’s volume from a year earlier). On the other side of the equator, port workers in Argentina again are striking, holding up at least 20 ships in the Parana River, intuitively slowing down grain exports from the South American nation.[3] This comes as the Rosario Grains Exchange raised their soybean production estimate for this year’s Argentine crop by 300,000 MT to 57.3M tonnes, 500,000 below the U.S.D.A.’s 57.8M-tonne forecast. The Exchange also provided their first acreage estimate for their 2017/18 wheat crop, calling for 13.8M acres, or an 8% jump from last year.

A company that compiles forecasts together, FocusEconomics, suggests that the average corn price in the 4th quarter of this year (Oct-Dec) will top $4 USD / bushel on the Chicago future board, with the number attributed to lower global supply and a smaller harvest in the U.S. than last year.[4] For soybeans, the firm is calling for $9.66 and a 4Q2018 forecast above $10 for the 2018/19 crop (yes it’s healthy to consider next year’s crop now). However, the forecast for Chicago wheat prices in 4Q2017 remains at $4.70, with the optimism for 4Q2018 still just $4.82, despite the recent bullish production concerns on the table. There continues a lot of conversation about the available supply of good-quality wheat, or rather, the lack of it.[5] With yield estimates for the U.S. hard red spring wheat crop starting to drop, the suggestion is that the 2017/18 American carryout could be the below 100M bushels if average production is below 40 bu/ac (we’ve seen about 47 bu/ac the last 3 years). Where there’s no shortage of wheat is in Australia, but Lanworth says that soil moisture is at record lows in Western Australia, which isn’t helping a newly-seeded crop, and accordingly, has helped futures prices in Sydney hit a 1-year high this morning.[6] Over the next 7 days, the western part of the U.S. Northern Plains and southern parts of Western Canada doesn’t seem to have much rain in its forecast (i.e. less than half an inch although I’m betting most would take it)[7], which will continue to weigh on the bullish mind of many. While rains this week in the aforementioned areas certainly helped, it won’t be enough to get soil moisture profiles back on the adequate side of things from the dry state they’re currently in. The N.O.A.A.’s long-term forecast just got updated and shows above-average temperatures for the U.S. Midwest with average precipitation for all growing areas in July.[8] Looking onward through September though, moisture events are expected to normal throughout the cornbelt but the Dakotas are expected to get aboveaverage rainfall. If realized, the irony would be thick, given the parched conditions we’re experiencing right now. Have a great weekend! Terry Beech, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard and Member of Parliament for Burnaby North-Seymour on behalf of Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Lawrence MacAulay, announced today up to $764,754 in funding to help expand and access new markets for B.C.’s seafood sector. The announcement coincides with the start of the BC Seafood Expo, an annual event which showcases the Pacific Northwest Seafood Industry. The event also provides a showcase of the industry to domestic and international buyers. This includes $450,000 in support to the Canadian Pacific Kazunoko Association (CPKA) to promote B.C.’s herring roe products in China and expand the Japanese market; $74,975 to the Pacific Sea Cucumber Harvesters Association (PSCHA) to promote and expand markets in Asia; and $152,563 to the Pacific Urchin Harvester’s Association (PUHA) to support their efforts to brand and promote products in Asia, the European Union and the United States. The funding provided will help these organizations participate in trade shows and missions, conduct market research, and develop marketing products.

Vaccines are good for all pet health
We’re all familiar with the concept of vaccines: injections that are given regularly to us and our animals to prevent us from getting certain illnesses. But how many of us are actually familiar with the illnesses that we’re preventing, and how many of us are aware of just how important vaccines are to every animal? Vaccines are a vital part of your animal’s health care, whether that animal is a dog, cat, horse, or cow! In this article we’ll discuss small animal vaccinations and why we give them. Dogs are routinely vaccinated with what is commonly known as a ‘combo’, a vaccine which immunizes them against parvovirus, canine distemper, canine hepatitis (caused by adenovirus), and sometimes parainfluenza (this vaccine is also known as DAP or DAPP). Parvo is frequently seen in the Peace River area and causes severe lethargy, vomiting, and bloody diarrhea. Without treatment parvo is fatal and even with treatment it will often kill. Canine distemper is seen less often but is more deadly, causing upper respiratory and neurological symptoms, while adenovirus causes a disease process known as canine infectious hepatitis and causes liver failure. Parainfluenza is not seen in our area but causes upper respiratory and flu symptoms. All of these diseases have the potential to cause serious illness and, in many cases, death but proper vaccination – a series of two to three vaccines four weeks apart
as puppies, a year booster, and boosters or titre testing every three years after – will prevent all of them. Cats are vaccinated with a ‘combo’ as well, FCRP: feline calicivirus, feline rhinotracheitis, and feline panleukopenia (also known as feline distemper). Calici causes upper respiratory symptoms and ulcers in the mouth, and frequently develops into pneumonia and polyarthritis. Feline rhinotracheitis causes upper respiratory symptoms as well and also can cause ulcers on the eyes, which can lead to blindness and damage to the sinuses. Both of these viruses suppress the appetite and affected animals may need feeding tubes and intensive care to survive. Feline panleukopenia is an almost always fatal virus which causes destruction of the intestinal lining and severe immune suppression. Cats suffer from vomiting and profuse bloody diarrhea leading to anemia and dehydration. Cats who come into contact with the virus while pregnant will birth kittens with severe brain damage. These viruses are all wide-spread in the environment but much like dogs, they can be prevented by a series of two to three vaccines four weeks apart as kittens, a year booster, and boosters or titre testing every three years. Both dogs and cats are also vaccinated for rabies. Although rabies is uncommon in domestic animals it is still present in Canada and is an ex-
tremely important vaccines. In particular, bats often carry rabies without showing symptoms and have been known to infect pets in British Columbia. Rabies is one hundred percent fatal in all domestic animals, and is also considered a terminal illness in humans. If an animal with a questionable vaccine history or no history of vaccines bites someone, they can be euthanized or quarantined for up to six months. The bitten person will also have to undergo a series of treatments in order to prevent any possibility of rabies infection, even if they have been previously vaccinated against rabies. This deadly disease, which kills over 17 000 people per year, can be prevented with a single vaccine as a puppy or kitten, a booster in one year, and boosters every three years after. Vaccines are important not just for your pet’s health, but for the health of pets around you! Animals who are immune suppressed from other illnesses, pregnancy, or who are too young to have their full vaccine series and be protected need the ‘herd immunity’ to prevent these viruses from taking hold in their community and infecting them. By choosing to vaccinate, you are saving your pet from the potential of pain, suffering, and potentially death – and you are also saving the life of someone else’s beloved family member. No kicking!
If you watch your horse you will see signs of warning that they are thinking about kicking or biting. They will look at the target, their eye changes to something not so friendly, their tail often swishes at the other horse and then they will shift their weight in preparation for the kick if they aren’t already in position. At the first sign of trouble, that is when it is our job to give them something productive to do with their feet and minds and make the right thing easy and the wrong thing difficult. For example if you are riding past someone and your horse shows you a sign that it is threatening in any way to another horse, give his feet something to do, side pass, hindquarter yield, stop, back up - whatever is appropriate for the situation. Some horses are just as happy to use their teeth as their feet and the same reasoning applies. I like to move the part of the horse that is doing the threatening. If it is the mouth then redirect the horse’s head, if it is the hind feet move his hindquarters. Before he moved his hip towards the other horse he would have shown some body language, forecasting his plan and the sooner you act on it the less it will take to correct it. Horses kick for various reasons. Some out of fear, lacking in confidence around other horses.
Some horses can kick it old school. Others are trying to assert themselves and let the other horses know they think they should be at the top of the pecking order. If they kick out of fear you can help by riding the horse that is unconfident near another horse and then have the rider of the other horse rub the scared horse. It’s usually easier to ride the scared horse up, rather than have it be the one ridden up to. I like to use a horseman stick to do the rubbing so I don’t get kicked until it’s safer to stand close and the horse realizes there isn’t anything to worry about. Then you will have to do the same procedure moving and with many horses. You are probably thinking this could take forever, but it doesn’t at all. You will generally see results the moment you start the rubbing. No matter what the reason your horse kicks, the owner or rider needs to have enough respect and confidence earned with their horse that it will not kick. The horse needs to know it is unacceptable and that the handler will look after it and keep it from being kicked by other horses and that the handler is at the top of the pecking order. You want your horses to look to you for guidance and not be doing their own thing. If you are riding or leading your horse and all of the sudden it is kicking and squealing at another horse then your horse is not with you mentally. You are not in charge; he is not looking to you for guidance, direction or leadership. It is our job to

Pay close attention to the early signs and do something productive with the horse’s mind and feet to get them back with you. You must consistently make the wrong thing difficult until the poor behavior is changed to a better one. I am sure if you have been around horses very long your horse or someone else’s horse has tried to kick. It is natural for horses to kick one another and they do it often in the herd as a way of establishing dominance and to protect themselves. However, when people are around it is very dangerous and we don’t handle a kick as well as another horse can. A good rule of thumb, for safety sake; if the horse is with you whether on the ground, tied to a fence or being road there is no kicking allowed. We are responsible for our horses and their behavior. Other people are responsible for their horses and shouldn’t allow their horses to stick their noses on or threaten other horses. If they do allow it, there will usually be a squeal, strike or kick from one or both horses very soon and a person can end up being the target.

Summer is here. Grab your meat and grill it
and let rest for 5-10 minutes. For tomatoes: Arrange tomatoes on a serving platter. Scatter shallot and parsley over; drizzle with oil and season with salt and pepper. In a medium bowl, toss watercress with 1 tablespoon each oil and lemon juice. Season watercress to taste with salt. Mound watercress on platter. Slice steak against the grain; transfer to platter with tomatoes and watercress. Spoon tapenade on steak and serve alongside.
Prep: For tapenade: Stir 1/3 cup olive oil, next 4 ingredients, and anchovy, if using, in a small bowl. Add more olive oil for a thinner tapenade, if desired. (For a smoother sauce, purée tapenade in a food processor or blender.) Set aside. For steak: Place steak in a large baking dish and season generously with salt. Stir orange zest and juice and remaining 6 ingredients in a small bowl to combine. Spread mixture evenly over both sides of steak and let marinate at room temperature for 1 hour. Build a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill, or heat a gas grill to high. Grill steak, turning once, until nicely charred, about 5 minutes on each side for medium-rare. Transfer to a carving board

Grill, covered, turning once, until chicken registers 165°F, 22 to 25 minutes. (Chicken may appear pale; no cause for worry.) Brush generously all over with some of sauce, then move chicken directly over coals (turned-on burners if using gas). Grill chicken, covered, turning and moving to area with no coals or heat underneath if flare-ups occur, until browned, 3 to 5 minutes more. (Add more charcoal during grilling if necessary to maintain heat.) Serve chicken with reserved sauce.

Cook burgers until desired doneness on a grill of choice: gas, charcoal or even one from George Foreman’s empire all work well. Place a piece of bacon on each and then top with a piece of jack cheese to hinge the bacon in place. Top with a grilled pineapple slice and serve on Kaiser rolls spread with Spicy Cilantro Mayo (recipe follows.) Adam’s ribs, if you will BBQ ‘Here’s the rub’ Rib rub 2 Tbsp ground cumin 2 Tbsp ground coriander 2 Tbsp Spanish paprika (mild) 1 Tbsp salt 2 tsp garlic powder 2 tsp ground black pepper ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional) Saucy Ribs 3 rack beef ribs, taken from the prime rib roast (about 8 bones per rack) 1 cup barbeque sauce (your favourite variety) ½ cup apple cider vinegar ½ cup fancy molasses
4. While the ribs are cooking, prepare the BBQ sauce. Stir the prepared sauce with the apple cider vinegar and molasses. When the ribs are 20 minutes from finishing, brush the sauce on both sides. Assembly 1. For the BBQ rub, combine all the spices and store until ready to use. 2. For a gas grill, preheat it to medium and for charcoal, burn long lasting briquettes until they turn ¾ white. Score the backside of the ribs with a sharp knife to open up the tissue, but not pierce the meat (this allows the spice flavors to cook in). Rub the BBQ rub vigorously over all sides of the ribs, pressing well with your hands to get it to stick. 3. Grill ribs on one side, covered, for 20 minutes. Reduce the grill heat (if gas) to medium low and turn the ribs after another 20 minutes. The convection heat of a covered grill will keep air and heat circulating, while concentrating the smoke and spice flavors. Continue cooking and turning ribs every twenty minutes, for about 2 hours (you may have to re-fuel your charcoal BBQ).

Spring wheat leads rally higher priced spring wheat to their flour blends over the past year. That trend will continue if protein remains low again for this year’s HRW harvest. Hot/dry conditions Additional bullish momentum for spring wheat prices now comes with news of increasingly hot/dry conditions impacting North American spring wheat areas - the area of the northern U.S. Plains and southern Canadian Prairies. Conversely, a wetter spring across northern areas of Saskatchewan and Alberta has delayed seeding to the point where perhaps 1.5 million acres of intended spring wheat acres will not be planted this year.

Along with excessive moisture that tends to lower protein content, crop experts also point to record yields in Kansas and Oklahoma last year that left soils drained of nutrients. Low wheat prices last fall discouraged farmers from spending money to replenish the soil with nitrogen fertilizer, a common protein-booster, ahead of planting this latest HRW crop.
The latest weekly crop condition report from United States Department of Agriculture pegged only 55 per cent of the spring wheat crop in “good” to “excellent” shape. That’s a dramatic seven percentage point drop from the previous week. The result is an extra jump this week to Minneapolis spring wheat futures as traders expected just a one-point drop from week-ago.

So then, cash and futures prices for wheat are in the process of factoring in a low-protein U.S. winter wheat crop. Such expectations have in turn lifted the price premium that Minneapolis spring wheat futures carry over mid-grade Kansas City HRW wheat futures on June 6 to US$1.60 a bushel, the largest premium of the 2016-2017 marketing year.
Interestingly enough, winter wheat futures prices for Chicago and Kansas City show those markets moving more along a sideways pattern. No major excitement there. Large global wheat supplies keep a lid on those markets, even with lower planted area.

But hog revenues dipped 3.2% and cattle producers recorded a dispiriting 17.7% drop in receipts.

What a Danish physicist once famously quipped – “It is exceedingly difficult to make predictions, particularly about the future” – is true. But that doesn’t stop me from making forecasts, or at the very least, to look at market prospects using logic, statistics, and yes, a little intuition.
Dairy cash receipts will continue growing. I’m projecting an average annual increase of 4% in 2017 and 2018. Milk production growth is certainly one big reason behind this optimistic forecast as Canadians’ appetite for dairy products continues to expand. Farm prices should also slightly improve following the small 1% decline in 2016.
Cattle producers will face better prospects in 2017
Chicken farm revenues could offer a pleasant surprise
Canadian cattle production isn’t likely to increase, so any decent rebound in livestock receipts will have to come from prices. An unexpected series of events has already raised fed steer prices this year, likely enough to trigger a significant rebound. Livestock receipts are projected to grow at an average annual rate of 4% in 2017 and 2018. The 2017 projection is likely conservative and is likely to be surpassed if the current price rally lasts well into the summer.
Chicken farm cash receipts should grow 4% in 2017 and 3% in 2018. I forecast the farm price to remain stable as feed costs flatten; the increase then will really be driven by projected increases in production. In fact, our projection remains conservative given the current limited availability of chicken in the Canadian marketplace.

Niche market blossoms for greenhouse floral growers O SUSAN MANN A new opportunity to produce potted plants for the ethnic market is blossoming for Ontario greenhouse flower growers. The Niagara-based Vineland Research and Innovation Centre is leading the project to develop the potted jasmine plant market, and eventually production of other plants significant for new Asian Canadians. Ontario-grown potted jasmine plants were available in April for the first time at Torontoarea supermarket chain Longo’s, another of the project’s partners, along with the Ontario agriculture ministry and Westbrook Floral Ltd., a greenhouse flower grower and distributor. The flower project represents a new niche opportunity for greenhouse flower growers. Vineland’s work on flower production for the ethnic market mirrors its efforts to develop ethnic crops - such as okra and Chinese long eggplant - Canadian farmers can grow for citizens missing foods from their home countries. Big bucks on flowers Vineland’s research shows Toronto-area South Asian consumers spend about $60 million annually on cut and potted flowers, says Amy Bowen, research program leader of the consumer insights group. “We know we weren’t meeting their vegetable needs, so are we not meeting their flower needs?
That is, in fact, what we found,” Bowen says. Flowers have a huge significance for Asian and Southeast Asian consumers, unlike westerners who don’t attach the same importance to them. In Asian cultures flowers are more commonly used in “day- to- day activities,” Bowen says. “They use them for religious and spiritual purposes,” as gifts, jewelry and decorations. Jasmine fills gaps Ontario agriculture ministry greenhouse floriculture specialist Chevonne Carlow says growing jasmine “helps to diversify the offerings they (farmers) can produce here at home.” Jasmine, a fragrant plant, is fairly easy to produce and grows well, quickly in the summer heat. “That makes them a good crop to grow through the summer in the greenhouse and it makes them easy to grow for fall holidays,” Carlow says. Seasonal growers could use jasmine production to fill down time in the summer. More jasmine for fall Westbrook Floral Ltd., headquartered in Grimsby, grew the potted jasmine released in April. Another release of jasmine is planned for the fall in time for the Hindu festival of light, Diwali. Sonia Bawa, Westbrook Floral key account
manager, says the plants performed “significantly well.” Carlow says there are more than 200 commercial greenhouse flower growers in Ontario.

Farmers’ voices wanted for national food policy OWEN ROBERTS The country’s first national food policy is now being developed. Consultations are underway, including an online survey, with a national food policy summit scheduled for June 22 and 23 in Ottawa. Consultations will wrap up in the fall, followed by a summary report of the comments and ultimately, the policy itself. Creating a long-term vision The federal government describes a food policy as a way to address issues related to the production, processing, distribution and consumption of food. The policy will set a long-term vision for the country’s health, environmental, social and economic goals related to food, it says. It will also identify action that can be taken in the short term. As well, the federal government says it wants to draw from a variety of experiences and perspectives with Canadians and organizations active on food issues. To that end, it is seeking input from interested

Canadians, including groups and individuals interested in access to food, healthy and safe food, and the relationship between agriculture, the environment and the economy. Steps to ease late seeding risks RICHARD KAMCHEN Delayed seeding in parts of Alberta is raising fall frost gambling stakes, but there are steps farmers can take and tools they can use to mitigate their risks. “Some growers are moving to earlier maturing crops like barley,” says provincial crop specialist Neil Whatley. “If it does experience a quality loss, it could still be good for livestock feed. We could look at barley and oats as possible greenfeed and forages, or use them for swath grazing if needed.” Seeding progress in the province was furthest behind in the Peace River region, where plantings were only 71 per cent completed as of June 6, versus the 99.8 per cent five-year average. The northeast and northwest regions were about nine percent behind average.
Speeding up crop development Producers seeding in June face a greater chance of frost damage, but planting now also means faster maturity. “There’s more rapid accumulation of heat units when crops are seeded this late, so the crops can make up five to eight days.” So a 95-day maturity crop like barley could take 87 to 90 days to mature thanks to the longer, warmer days, he says. Shallow seeding into warm, moist soils will allow for faster germination. Soil compaction is important as well, and good seed-to-soil contact will enable seeds to better absorb water and germinate sooner. Also speeding up plant progress are fertilizer applications. “Phosphorous is very helpful for what

China helps augment canola demand growth China is a vegoil consuming machine, yet it is difficult to pinpoint specific trends beyond traditional income, population and dietary change - ones like policy, desire to crush versus import or substitution amongst oils. Chinese data isn’t perfect, but United States Department of Agriculture is likely as good as anyplace with estimates.
There’s more room for Canadian canola oil export growth too, but suspect respective supply stays in North America if U.S. biodiesel policy shifts to favour U.S. producers. Demand is deep
Supply versus domestic use The most important China canola chart is this canola oil supply versus domestic use. It shows canola oil consumption exceeding supply by about one million tonnes in each of the past two years. The core reason behind this is government decision to auction off government-owned inventory that it has accumulated in the past decade. Absolutes are loose, but call it about 2.5 tonnes a year for the past two years, supply that the trade has locked up for the balance of 2017. Reports suggest that about another one tonne is left for auction in 2018 and beyond. At that point, China will need to bump up canola oil supply either via production or imports.
China demand is deep as long as crush margins are decent. While China can buy and consume four to five tonnes of canola a year, that doesn’t mean they will price that amount and be a buyer all the time. When import math makes sense, they swing a big bat. Right now, China domestic crush margins likely would need to improve by about $30 to $50 a tonne to achieve that goal. Despite a constructive demand backstop, the market is currently predisposed on North American supply what-ifs. How much canola area was planted or abandoned? Will it rain? What will the conclusion to the growing season bring? How will the U.S. soybean crop turn out? Short-term/mid-term outlook
Substitution Greater vegoil substitution is another choice but is unlikely due to core domestic canola oil demand traits. Higher import potential was probable motivation for recent reports where two to three new Chinese crush plants were announced as being switched into canola. It’s

If time has been spent with the young dog, then chances are there has been some obedience happening. The dog should know by the tone of your voice and your actions if you are pleased or unhappy with his behavior. As he gets older and starts to developed more independence the obedience will need to become a priority. When a pup is young he will be happy to tag along and follow as you go about your daily routine. As he gains his confidence he will no longer feel the need to be so dependent on you and will start venturing further away by himself. When this starts to happen there will be a reluctance to come when called and a general ignoring of you if he has other interests. This is an indication that it is time to work on some obedience skills. The start to formal obedience should be putting a lie down on the dog. This can be done in a couple of ways depending on the pup’s age and nature. For a young, soft pup, a wiener or treat may work well. An older or more independent pup can be started with a leash and choke chain. To use the treat method take a few small pieces ofwiener and feed it to the dog. Once he gets eating the wiener then drag your hand down towards the floor in front of the pups nose and say “lie down’. The pup will follow the wiener down with his nose if you get your hand in the right position. As soon as he ties down to get the wiener allow him to eat it and give him praise. Do this 2 or 3 times and then quit. Short sessions will keep the pup

Old school and verses new ways on the open road It seems to me that everywhere I turn there is nothing but nasty, hurtful media, nasty, hurtful stories, nasty hurtful people doing nasty hurtful things. If a person voices their opinion or shares their feelings on topics like Muslims and Sharia Law, expect to be attacked by a pack of rabid humans if you have any doubts, questions or fears to express. If a person who lived through the King Ralph era here in Alberta draws similarities to what Trump is doing in the US to stimulate business and the economy and says, hey, I like those ideas, my God you’d think you were the worst person in the world and had to like and support everything about the man. How people can make that big of a leap without evidence is beyond me. The stuff that has been going on in our global community, our world has be making me physically and spiritually ill. We in the motorcycle community have our own politics and they are just as hurtful and just as nasty as anything you’ll see on TV. From being told take of our vests/patches, cuts, shirts etc... to being profiled, we riders can and many have experienced a ton of garbage. We have all sorts of outside discrimination hurled at us, and then we have our own form of internal discrimination, sport bikers versus cruisers, touring - the whole brand bashing, Ducati eats GSXR or Indian blankety blanks H-D, clubbers VS non clubbers...some of it is good natured, some of it not so much. You’d think after the unfair way many of us are tarred that we wouldn’t go down the path of discrimination but guess what...we do. And then there’s the kind of insidious personal politics that makes one scratch their head and go, what the H E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS just happened. I started this business, Belt Drive Betty Media, trying to find a job for myself after a car crash. After much research and courses, I landed on promoting the charitable events and causes of the motorcycle community and writing a column
about our world. This one...From the Depths of File 13... I did not want to mow anyone else’s lawn and so I have stayed pretty true to that niche. I have offered our company’s services up to various organizations and many have used them very successfully. We have operated the Canadian Motorcycle Events Calendars and provided them for free to the riding community, the clubs, the charities, the associations and the riders for 15 seasons now. www.canadianmotorcyleevents.com We put hundreds and thousands of hours into the calendars every year. I have one person named Dave Trerice, that’s all he does is reach out to the riding clubs, the associations and charities and ensures their events get that free exposure. Ali our web mistress, Rhonda in sales and myself, we all contribute, but Dave, he’s the heavy lifter... My company pays him, not well, but pays him, not what he’s worth, but we pay him to help these communities and their causes. He makes sure that the calendars have all of the information that the posters should have but often times don’t, like contacts, addresses etc. He puts his heart and soul into helping these riding clubs, associations and causes. Our calendars are easy to use, divided up by province, sortable by kind of event, postal code and a whole bunch of other filters that can be applied. However, some of the organizations we have offered the free use of our calendars to, have flat out turned us down, some even preferring we do
not support their causes with free advertising. These orgs are largely run by other women. These organizations would rather build their own calendars than work together, I get it, but I don’t. Then there are some other gals I have come to know who are doing a publicity trip. I offered to help with hotel discounts and publicity through our newspaper. They have chosen not to respond. That makes me sad. I am too old school I guess. Me, I just want to work with and help everyone I can. I am for ever and always trying to put people together that I think will help each other. I do introductions all the time. I love to contribute to this community, our society, country; my attitude is if I can bring one more person to your event, or cause, then the effort I /we put out on promoting for you is worthwhile, and yet, it seems to me that there are certain factions that think we want to take over instead of help. That’s the vibe they give off as they aren’t very diplomatic in their refusals to work together. Or it could be that perhaps a month and a half of flu and funerals has made me too touchy... I don’t know. And maybe New School and Old School just aren’t meant to find a bridge to working together. I am finding it difficult to wrap my head around the fact that there are people don’t want help or contributions from those they deem as outsiders. Contentious days and ways.... We are committed to implementing all of the recommendations. Through continuous improvement of Alberta’s emergency response system, the Government of Alberta will be better prepared for future emergencies,” added Shaye Anderson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister responsible for the Alberta Emergency Management Agency Work to implement the recommendations will build on the province’s emergency response capabilities and actions that have already been taken, including: $45 million in FireSmart program funding to assist communities with wildfire prevention and protection activities ($15 million a year increase, Budget
2017), strengthened wildfire protection laws, improved procedures to enhance fire weather forecasting, making the successful air-traffic control protocols developed in Fort McMurray a new standard, and a $125-million investment in a new, state-of-the-art, Provincial Operations Centre (Budget 2017). The wildfire reviews have concluded that the province and emergency response staff did an effective job during a challenging and complex situation. The third-party independent reviews found that: The Horse River (Fort McMurray area) wildfire was an extreme event; firefighters were successful at protecting critical infrastructure in the region, which meant that re-entry and recovery efforts could occur sooner; the province has sound emergency response and wildfire management systems in place; and the provincial response to wildfire was appropriate and timely In addition to previously announced funding for the new Provincial Operations Centre and the FireSmart programs, the cost to implement the recommendations is approximately $10 million over three years, with the majority of the funding provided within existing budget.

Receipts remain stable as market conditions mixed Crop producers reported another strong year in 2016 despite weather challenges in Western Canada, according to Statistics Canada. Total crop receipts were 5.8%
higher than 2015 due to strength in canola (15%), corn (11%), pea (68%), and soybean (21%) receipts. Potato receipts were 12% stronger in 2016.
I expect cash crop receipts to remain strong in 2017, recording a 1% increase over 2016 levels in Eastern Canada, while crop receipts in Western Canada could see a 1%

Grain and oilseed receipts in Western Canada are going to remain historically strong, even accounting for a potential 1% decline. Weather challenges in 2016 will impact 2017 revenues due to poorer quality being marketed. Weather will continue to impact crop receipts in 2017, early estimates indicate that 5% of the acres in Saskatchewan will go unseeded. The large global supply of wheat will continue to exert downward pressure on wheat prices. Yet, there are also positive trends. Continued strength in the canola market domestically and internationally will remain supportive of crop revenues. Pulse receipts remain sensitive to market conditions in large producing countries. It seems as if Indian producers may not be able to replicate their 2016/17 production prowess. Potato revenues projected to decline from 2016 Potato receipts are projected to decrease 1% in 2017. Production will recover in Ontario in-line with normal production levels. The Canadian dollar will continue to support Canadian potato prices and promote exports to the U.S. and around the world. U.S. potato production is expected to increase after declining in 2016 which is expected to put some downward pressure on prices for the new crop.
