What to Expect on Our Wildlife Photography Tours

On all our photography tours, you’ll have opportunities to develop your technical skills through a series of informal workshops in the field. Suitable for all levels, the workshops cover a variety of photographic techniques relevant to the subject matter and habitat. Expert photographic leaders will offer as much one-to-one time and tuition as possible, and you’ll have ample time to make the most of each location’s photographic potential.

Mark Carwardine

Mark is an award-winning writer and bestselling author of more than 50 books, a zoologist, a TV and radio broadcaster and a prolific wildlife photographer. Voted one of the ‘World’s 40 Most Influential Nature Photographers’, he was Chair of the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition for many years.

Ben Cherry

Ben is an environmental photojournalist and natural history cameraman, with a focus on highlighting the beauty of the natural world and also how we interact with it. He’s had success in international competitions, been published in numerous magazines and has helped film footage for the BBC.

Nick Garbutt

Nick has worked closely with us for many years to develop a unique portfolio of wildlife photography tours which are second to none! A two-time category winner in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, Nick's tours form the backbone of our exciting programme.

Alex Hyde

An award-winning nature photographer and university lecturer, Alex has received high acclaim for his work, especially his spectacular and innovative macro images. This includes the winning entry in the 'Hidden Britain' category of the British Wildlife Photography Awards.

Harry Read

After graduating with a degree in zoology, Harry began his photographic journey in the Arctic Circle as a photography guide in Sweden’s stunning Abisko National Park. From there, he started leading group tours to Finland to photograph his favourite animal – the brown bear, as well as other amazing species.

Bret Charman

Bret is a multi-award-winning wildlife photographer and a full-time member of the team at Wildlife Worldwide. He leads a number of tours for us around the world and has a particular love for African wildlife. In 2017 he won the 'Birds in Flight' category in Bird Photographer of the Year.

Joe Cornish

A wildlife and landscape photographer, Joe started his career freelancing for the National Trust in 1988. Years of close encounters with nature have left him convinced of the need to reconnect people with the natural world, and he has written several landscape photography publications.

Emma Healey

Having spent many years travelling to far-flung destinations with her camera, Emma brings her love of wildlife photography, nature and travel to the Wildlife Worldwide team. Emma has travelled extensively, with Canada, Borneo and Kenya among her favourites and she's developed a real love of primates.

Kevin Morgans

A talented wildlife photographer, Kevin has been awarded in numerous competitions and is best known for his incredible work with the Atlantic puffins of the UK. He has been running workshops for many years, passing on his photography expertise and knowledge of the natural world.

Ben Sutcliffe

Ben has travelled to many countries from a young age across North and Central America, as well as more widely in Europe. Ben's fascination for travelling helped fuel his passion for wildlife photography, and coupled with his infectious enthusiasm, he's an excellent leader and can be found leading many of our tours.

As a multi-award-winning full-time photographer, Sean's work is regularly featured across a range of national and international publications. Sean has led numerous workshops in the UK and further afield in Europe at locations including Skomer, Greece, Finland, Spain and Poland.

Chris Weston

Chris Weston has been a professional wildlife photographer for over 20 years, and has had his work published in several publications including the BBC, ITV, The Times, Daily Telegraph and National Geographic. Chris is an advocate of wildlife conservation and is co-founder of the US-based charity Animals on the Edge.

United Kingdom

Finland Spring Emergence

AAs winter loosens its icy grip, Finland’s boreal forest begins to stir, presenting photographers with the tantalising prospect of photographing the trio of bear, wolf and wolverine on snow. Discover the latest in our Boreal Predators series, as Tour Leader Harry Read introduces our early spring departure.

t the beginning of spring, seasonal changes accelerate week by week and the days rapidly grow longer. With this comes heightened predator activity, and our new Boreal Predators departures are dedicated to photographing Finland’s ‘Big Three’: wolverine, wolf and brown bear.

Wolverines bound effortlessly across the snow on their broad, snowshoe-like paws, while wolves patrol the swampland and forest edges. Both species are focused on food as winter draws to a close — wolverines are busy feeding their pups, and wolves are preparing for theirs to be born at denning sites.

April offers the chance to photograph the very first brown bears of the year emerging from hibernation, their breath visible in the cold air as they step cautiously into snowcovered clearings. Large males are the first to emerge, slowly navigating the snowy landscape and feeding with less urgency as their digestive systems gradually readjust. Bird species such as white-tailed eagle, raven, northern goshawk, hooded crow and Siberian jay are all photographic possibilities from our photo hides.

Early spring offers photographers something different from the lush abundance of summer or the vibrant colours of autumn. In April, we’re presented with extraordinary opportunities to photograph these secretive predators against an enchanting, minimalist and often wintry backdrop. Clean white tones and soft light create a striking contrast with the darker, muted tones of the predators’ coats. If conditions allow, falling snow can add depth to our images, while intricate networks of mammal tracks are revealed in the snow.

Beyond the predators, the forest is alive with smaller subjects that we’ll spend time photographing during the daytime. Red squirrels bustle around the lodge in their beautifully thick winter coats, while crested tit, willow tit, bullfinch, Eurasian jay and great spotted woodpecker provide additional photographic opportunities set against the snow. Many species are still reliant on stored food during this time, and energy conservation remains critical. On warmer days, early signs of territoriality may begin to show as songs and displays are initiated.

Our spring tour is designed for a small group of up to eight participants, ensuring plenty of space in the purpose-built photography hides and personalised support throughout. The hides are carefully positioned within prime predator habitat, allowing for close encounters with minimal disturbance. There are also opportunities to shoot through low-angle openings, offering an intimate, eye-level perspective. With the increasing daylight hours, we benefit from long periods of beautiful directional light. With no light pollution in the area and dark, starry skies overhead, views of the mesmerising Northern Lights are also a possibility.

Our base for the tour is a cosy, ex-forestry workers’ cabin, warm and welcoming against the vast wilderness that surrounds it. Following our hide sessions in the afternoons and evenings, we return to the lodge for our meals, to chat and to go through the images we’ve captured. Mornings might include image review sessions and constructive critique, along with practical guidance on camera settings and post-processing techniques. Photographic assistance continues beyond the hide, helping you refine your vision and workflow.

A traditional lakeside sauna offers the perfect way to warm up after hide sessions in the evenings. Temperatures often remain below freezing, but these conditions can set the stage for a magical photographic experience.

NEW Boreal Predators Photography in Early Spring with Harry Read

This immersive early spring tour ventures into Northern Finland to photograph its most iconic predators in a stunning snow-covered landscape. Making the most of the increasing day length, we use expertly positioned photographic hides to capture images of brown bears recently emerged from hibernation, Eurasian wolf packs interacting on the forest edge, and wolverines patrolling the snow-filled landscape.

Svalbard A Picture Perfect Experience

During the month of May, Svalbard is a winter wonderland. The rugged snowy peaks, dramatic glaciers and expansive ice floes make for a photographer’s paradise. Photographer and Tour Leader Bret Charman revels in what makes this trip so special.

Weaving our way along the northern shores of Svalbard, we’re likely to be the most northerly civilian ship on Earth and will be in the ideal place to find polar bears and other Arctic wildlife. The captain moves our small vessel expertly through this icy realm before parking the bow in the ice. Silence. Absolute silence. All around us lies an Arctic heaven. Untouched by man, this vast wilderness is home to polar bear, Arctic fox, walrus and other pinnipeds. Our home for this expedition voyage is the M/S Stockholm. She might be an older girl, but she’s strong – in fact, the Stockholm is able to go where many ships cannot. She’s remarkably stable and has a shallow draft – the perfect base for a dedicated photography expedition, particularly with her two Zodiacs and a skilled team aboard.

We’d already enjoyed an excellent couple of days, but we’d only seen a few distant bears and hoped we might see something a little closer. With strict regulations on polar bear viewing, our crew worked tirelessly to deliver without ever compromising their integrity. After dinner, once the group were in bed, our skipper put us alongside the ice. I’d been asleep for around an hour and a half when there was a knock on my cabin door. A bear was out on the ice, well over a kilometre away. Putting on some clothes, I was soon on the bridge watching this lone, distant bear. Suddenly, it was joined by another, this one a little smaller.

With the group still tucked up in their bunks, the bears began making their way across the ice towards the ship. I dashed below deck and woke everyone. Within minutes, the whole group was on the bow of the ship, eagerly anticipating what was to come. It was only a little after 3:00 am, but the adrenaline was flowing and our hearts were beating a little faster. Before we were ready, the bears started to play with one another. There, on the ice before us, was a large male bear and a gorgeous

young female. This was the encounter of a lifetime. For the next three hours we enjoyed countless memorable moments as this flirtatious couple boxed, hugged and splashed in the water together. We even watched them throw polar bear sized snowballs at one another. Unlike anything I’d seen before, this was truly a moment to savour and the photographic rewards were exceptional.

The flexibility and dedication of the crew aboard meant this was a wildlife experience that wouldn’t be possible on a larger ship. They woke us up, but they were enjoying every moment as much as the rest of us. Everybody was ecstatic. What had just happened? How had we all been lucky enough to witness this rarely seen behaviour? This is what a small ship expedition is all about.

Of course, this stunning wilderness is home to so much more. We were treated to exceptional encounters with walrus, countless seabirds, several species of seal and even some Arctic fox. All of this unfolded amongst some of the most spectacular scenery found anywhere on Earth. An Arctic paradise few get to experience, alongside the remarkable wildlife that calls it home, is what draws us back year after year.

In 2025, I was privileged to be at the helm of a new photo safari which visited Lower Zambezi National Park. While in the valley, we were treated to some exceptional wildlife encounters and standout photography opportunities. During the dry season, the floodplains of the Zambezi River are bathed in glorious golden light, while the drying vegetation makes finding wildlife that much easier.

As we drove through the Winterthorn forest for which Lower Zambezi National Park is famed, the rising sun shone shafts of light through the canopy, illuminating the forest floor below. A herd of impala were feeding on the drying grass and nibbling on the fallen seed pods of the acacia albida (Winterthorn) trees. While we sat photographing the impala in the magical light, we heard of a leopard sighting and we started to make our way towards the spot.

The winter sun was still low in the sky and the light remained great for photography. This is what makes this untouched piece of Africa so special. As we drove across the floodplain, I spotted a huge bird in a tree ahead of us. It was a juvenile martial eagle. Our quest for the leopard was put on hold for a moment. Having such a close view and superb photography opportunities of an eagle of this size is something you rarely get to enjoy. Making the most of the encounter, it was time to head towards where we heard of the leopard.

Arriving at the area where the leopard was last seen, our guide spotted the felid perched on the branches of a dead tree. It was a beautiful female, draped over a branch, legs spread and her tail hanging down. This was a leopard you dream of. The perfect spot for photography, we indulged ourselves in capturing standout imagery of this striking cat. What makes Lower Zambezi so good for photography is that the open forest

allows us to move position and maximise the angles for capturing stunning imagery.

The sun was continuing to rise, and we knew the leopard would likely move. Driving the vehicle to the other end of the dead tree, we positioned ourselves to photograph the moment she descended to drink from a drying river gully. Sure enough, just as we hoped, she descended the tree and drank right in front of us. However, the best was still to come.

Suddenly, our spotted subject was on the move and, with our guide’s expertise, we were able to predict where she might go. We drove around a thicket and she reappeared right before us. Within moments, she was skirting around our vehicle and climbed up a termite mound. This was one of those moments where you pinch yourself. The sighting was truly exceptional, while the photographs captured were out of this world.

Having led photography tours to the Brazilian Pantanal for several years, Wildlife Travel Consultant and Tour Leader Ben Sutcliffe shares why this vast tropical wetland is a dream destination for nature lovers.

e who kills with one leap’ – that’s the meaning behind the name jaguar in the indigenous communities of Brazil, and once you set eyes on these magnificent big cats, it all makes sense. Their power is instantly apparent as they stalk along the riverbanks, their muscular legs lifting paws equipped with daggerlike claws as they scan the beaches and shallows for unsuspecting caiman or capybara.

The Brazilian Pantanal is widely known as the best place in the world to see jaguars in the wild, and this is certainly not an understatement. It’s not unheard of to have double-digit jaguar sightings over a week-long trip on the bronzy waterways of the Northern Pantanal. But it’s not only these impressive big cats that we have on our photography shot lists. Giant river otters glide through the water with a series of chirps and vocalisations whilst they fish, Brazilian tapirs – bizarre prehistoric-like mammals – slip quietly between forest and water, giant anteaters dig for ants and termites in savannah-like fields, incredible birdlife announces itself in a bounty of colour, and brilliant soundscapes and surprising opportunities await around every corner. Unlike many rainforest habitats that hide their inhabitants in the shadows and behind walls of green, the Pantanal is open and generous with its sightings. Seasonal flooding transforms grasslands into shallow lakes, concentrating wildlife along a series of lagoons and river systems. The landscape here is unique, allowing for species like the jaguar (which are almost ghosts elsewhere!) to be seen in all their glory.

If you’re hoping to photograph the weird and wonderful giant anteaters, then the Southern Pantanal is where you should head. The wide, open fields allow for brilliant viewings of this species as they wander through the grasslands of the ranch, their heads sweeping side to side like a metal detector for invertebrates. Equipped

with an excellent sense of smell and huge front claws, they’re perfectly adapted for digging and tearing into termite mounds and ant nests.

Avian highlights are also non-stop here, from the elusive and striking agami heron with its long bill and incredible plumage, to the world’s largest flying parrot – the hyacinth macaw – which announces its presence by calling from palm tree nests. One-and-a-half-metre tall jabiru storks stalk the shallows for frogs and other tasty morsels, parakeets squawk overhead in flashes of vibrant greens, and kingfishers perch motionless on an overhanging branch before plummeting into the river and emerging with a full beak.

The diverse habitats of the Brazilian Pantanal are a nature lover’s playground. Whether you’re a keen photographer, birdwatcher, mammal enthusiast, herpetology fanatic or a general wildlife buff, it has something that will fascinate and enthral. I have the privilege of running our Brazil’s Big Five Photo Safari, a trip that excites me every time I see it approaching on my calendar. No matter which trip you choose to experience this tropical oasis, I’m sure it will impress and amaze just as it did when I first travelled there. This is nature in its rawest form, a perfect reminder of what the world can look like if it’s left to be wild.

Alaska Into the Wild: Alaska Bear Camp

ake Clark is one of the best places in the world to safely observe coastal brown bears up close in their natural environment. Surrounded by glaciers and beautiful mountains, the mix of sedge meadows, clam-filled sand flats and salmon-rich streams make it one of the best places for bears to fatten up for the winter.

You know the song – “If you go down to the woods today …” Well, if you go down to Alaska’s Bear Camp, you really will be in for a big surprise. Here, you’re surrounded by wild bears throughout your stay, immersed in their untamed world. It’s a rare privilege –an experience that feels less like visiting a destination and more like being welcomed, briefly, into nature’s inner circle.

Our adventure started in Homer, where Alaska’s famous sea otters greeted us with their irresistible charm. We watched as rafts of them floated together, holding hands to stay close or wrapping themselves in kelp to keep them from drifting while they snoozed. Surrounded by these, as well as the characterful tufted and horned puffins, black-legged kittiwakes and black oystercatchers, it was a gentle but encouraging prelude to the wild wonders to come.

From Homer, a small bush plane carried us over the shimmering Cook Inlet to the camp’s remote beach. Keep your eyes peeled – sometimes the pilot has to circle before landing to give way to a wandering bear crossing the sand below.

daily to witness these magnificent creatures up close. If you’re not at the viewing platforms next to camp, you travel part of the way in the 'bear mobile' before continuing on foot, camera in hand and bucket in tow (your makeshift seat for the session).

One of our first sightings was two young females playfighting in the grass just behind camp, their powerful yet playful energy captivating to watch. We saw them several times during our stay – hunting, sparring or snoozing on the sand. One we affectionately nicknamed 'Teddy' – her round face and soft features made her look just like a cuddly toy brought to life.

On our visit, we were lucky on many levels. The tides and moon cycles aligned perfectly, offering spectacular viewing conditions. Over four days, with the help of our fantastic guide, we counted around 25 individual bears, many seen multiple times. There’s nothing quite like sitting on a beach, watching a bear fish for salmon just 20 metres away, or stroll past with just a fleeting glance. It’s not fear you feel – it’s pure, exhilarating awe.

All too soon, it was time to leave. Although after three days of non-stop photography, our memory cards were probably grateful! After limited views on the way in, the finale for us was a breathtaking scenic flight over the Iliamna Volcano, its snow-dusted peaks glinting in the sunlight, before returning to Homer for a final glimpse of sea otters and (we were lucky again!) a passing pod of orca.

Visiting Alaska Bear Camp isn’t just a trip, it’s a privilege – an intimate, meaningful encounter with Alaska’s wild side that stays with you long after you leave.

Ecuador

Head in the Clouds, Feet in the Mud

IAward-winning photographer, acclaimed author and tour leader Nick Garbutt turns his attention to Ecuador, a country small in size but big on biodiversity, conservation awareness and remarkable rainforest wildlife.

’ve always been captivated by tropical rainforests, more than any other habitat.

As a child, I was glued to TV documentaries showcasing the jungles of the world, but one in particular always stood out as being the most mysterious, most adventurous and most exciting –the Amazon.

It wasn’t until my early thirties that I first set foot in an Amazon forest, and I remember effervescing with childlike excitement. Those first captivating forays were in Ecuador, and I’ve been fortunate to return on several occasions since. Much has changed since that first visit in the mid-1990s, and this was abundantly clear on my most recent visit in 2024. While we so often hear nothing but gloom with respect to deforestation and the destruction of the Amazon, in Ecuador there are clear green shoots of hope and much to be optimistic about.

In areas bordering national parks like Yasuni, some indigenous tribes have turned their back on the shortterm gain offered by international oil companies, instead opting for long-term community-based ecotourism projects that not only protect the forest but have the potential to provide income in perpetuity.

Elsewhere in areas adjacent to protected cloud forests, enterprising locals and non-governmental organisations have acquired patches of once cultivated land and over time allowed it to revert to secondary forest, whilst simultaneously habituating a variety of bird species to sympathetic feeding stations. This has expanded quality habitat for wildlife and created significant economic benefit. During my early visits, it was incredibly hard to catch a glimpse of beautiful but shy plate-billed mountain toucans or spectacular sword-billed hummingbirds, but now they can be relatively straightforward to see and photograph in certain locations.

Ecuador is one of several destinations that make up the rainforest workshop series I run jointly with friend and macro specialist Alex Hyde. We both rate Ecuador very highly as it offers an unrivalled diversity of habitats from lowland Amazonian forest to montane forests at different elevations on the western (Pacific) and eastern (Amazonian) slopes of the Andes and high elevation

páramo. We’ve tweaked the itinerary for our next Ecuador workshop in January 2027 to incorporate a broad cross-section of these to maximise photographic opportunities. Highlights should potentially include vibrant scarlet macaws at a clay-lick, primates like squirrel monkeys and tamarins, fiery cocks-of-the-rock at a lek, a huge diversity of hummingbirds that feature strongly across all lodges with feeders and perhaps Andean bears at high altitude.

In all our chosen locations, smaller subjects like frogs, reptiles including snakes, and insects feature strongly too as they can always be found. Some lodges have moth traps that help provide a steady stream of fascinating subjects, whether it be camouflaged mantids or gaudy silk moths.

The aim of the rainforest workshop series is twofold. Like all our photography tours, maximising great wildlife photography is germane, but with the addition of significant levels of tuition for those who wish. Rainforests particularly lend themselves to this dual approach as the photography is often more challenging and technical due to low light levels, which necessitates using flash and other creative lighting techniques.

Alongside our Andes to Amazon Rainforest Photography Workshop in Ecuador, you can also join myself and Alex Hyde on our Borneo Rainforest Photography Workshop, a specialist macro tour exploring some of Borneo’s best wildlife locations. Both workshops give you the opportunity to return home with not only stunning images, but with a deeper understanding of the rainforest and the skills to capture its remarkable biodiversity.

or those with a passion for primates and wildlife photography, this unique new tour to Vietnam promises an extraordinary experience. Led by award-winning photographer Sean Weekly, the itinerary has been carefully crafted to maximise photographic opportunities with some of Southeast Asia’s most elusive, colourful and endearing species –including the spectacular red-shanked douc.

At first glance, the red-shanked douc appears almost otherworldly. With its vivid mix of crimson legs, powdery pink face, orange-gold beard and expressive eyes, it could easily be mistaken for a Star Wars character rather than a real primate. Yet this extraordinary monkey is very much part of the real world – albeit one facing increasing threats in the wild. On this tour, we aim not only to photograph the red-shanked douc in its natural habitat, but also to raise awareness of its conservation story.

Our journey begins just a few hours north of Ho Chi Minh City, in Cat Tien National Park – a biologically rich reserve that protects one of Vietnam’s last remaining tracts of lowland tropical forest. This park is a stronghold for some of the country’s most endangered primates. From forest trails and riverbanks, we’ll search for and photograph three key species. The southern yellow-cheeked gibbon, known for its melodic calls at dawn, is often seen swinging through the canopy near the park entrance. We also hope to encounter the striking black-shanked douc langur, as well as the elegant Indochinese silvered langur, both of which offer fantastic photographic subjects with their distinctive features and graceful movements.

Cat Tien is also a haven for bird photographers. The forests and wetlands here host an array of vividly coloured and highly photogenic species. Highlights may include green peafowl, bar-bellied pitta, orangebreasted trogon, Germain’s peacock-pheasant, great

hornbill, and Siamese fireback. The combination of early morning light and vibrant plumage offers incredible potential for capturing iconic avian images.

From Cat Tien, we head north to a scenic waterfront eco-lodge near Danang, ideally located to explore both Bach Ma National Park and the Son Tra Nature Reserve. These mountainous forest regions are the best places in the world to see and photograph the stunning red-shanked douc langur. With luck, we’ll be able to observe them at eye level as they feed in the treetops, framed by misty hills and dense greenery. In quieter corners of Bach Ma, we may even encounter the rare and elusive white-cheeked gibbon.

Alongside our primate focus, this tour offers a wealth of other wildlife encounters. The surrounding forests are home to stump-tailed and pig-tailed macaques, the flamboyant Indochinese green magpie, silver pheasants, and, with patience and luck, large mammals such as gaur and Siamese crocodiles.

This exciting new itinerary offers a rare chance to capture truly unique images of Vietnam’s hidden forest treasures – and to deepen your appreciation for the primates that call this diverse country home.
