Our favourite activity was husky sledging without a doubt. Spending New Year’s Eve morning sledging across a frozen lake in the sunshine was just magical! We would definitely go back!

Q What did you enjoy most about your holiday? A For me, the most enjoyable thing was the sunset meal followed by sailing on the felucca in Aswan. It was a wonderful experience! Relaxing, beautiful and a very special memory for us all. My daughter Evie’s favourite moment was seeing Tutankhamun. She also loved riding Oscar the camel at the Pyramids of Giza.
We thought the food was excellent quality in all the places we ate. The highlight was the delicious food and hospitality at the family lunch in Luxor.
Q How did your guide help make the trip more
We would highly recommend Egypt for other families. The local arrangements in Egypt were seamless and professional, which meant we could fully relax and immerse ourselves in the holiday. Also, Egyptians love children, and Evie was relaxed in the welcoming and friendly atmosphere, chatting happily to those we met along the way and trying out her Egyptian Arabic!

Family Travel Through the Eyes of a Teen Having visited Costa Rica with her family as a teenager, Lilli looks back on her favourite memories from this trip and why she feels other teenagers would love it too. Q What are your favourite memories of Costa Rica? A My favourite memories of Costa Rica have to be the hanging
bridges and ziplining tours in the beautiful canopy of the rainforest. Taking in the views from up high was a great experience. The ziplining was absolutely incredible – we had clear views that allowed us to see the whole rainforest. I felt so taken aback at the scale of the beautiful jungle.
Q Did you see any interesting wildlife or landscapes? A Absolutely! I saw some unforgettable sights. I’ll never forget at Tortuguero National Park doing an evening walk and seeing a baby sloth they were caring for; it was so heartwarming. As for the landscapes, I loved visiting the volcano in Arenal; it was just beautiful.
Q If you could relive a day of the trip, which day would it be?
A I wish I could relive the whole trip! But if I had to pick one day,
it would be the white-water rafting. That was the most fun I've ever had. We were put in groups and worked as a team to move and turn seamlessly on the river. At a halfway point, we got out of our boats to jump off a mini cliff and yell "Pura Vida!" while they cut up fresh watermelon and pineapple. Then we all went back to battling the waves – it was brilliant.

Q Were there any activities you were nervous about but ended up loving?
A I’ve always been afraid of spiders, so when I found out we'd
be doing lots of walks through the rainforest, I was scared. However, the tour guide explained so much about each of the animals and their habitats to the point where I had my head in a tree trunk looking at an orange knee tarantula – who would've thought?!
Q Would you recommend this trip to a friend? A Yes, definitely! I had an absolutely amazing experience,
so I’d want my friends to have the chance to experience it too. The trip was full of unforgettable moments and I was never bored. I think my friends, especially because we're all teenagers, would really enjoy the wide variety of activities on offer. We particularly enjoyed bear watching out of Tofino on a speedboat, whale watching out of Telegraph Cove (there were so many whales and cute sea otters!), and walking the Pacific Rim coastal path out of Ucluelet.
A The driving was super easy; there were great roads with
plenty of room. It gave us so much freedom to stop en route, break up the journey and take in the massive expanse.
Q What was the accommodation like? A The accommodation was of superb quality throughout –
in local places which break up the journey nicely and act as local guides. We’d also suggest getting the ferry to Vancouver Island. It’s super easy, you can spot whales from the ferry and it’s full of locals offering advice on where to go! Trying rock prawns from a local fisherman with garlic butter is a must.

Q What inspired you to choose Japan for your family holiday?
A My son was the one who first suggested Japan, and I loved

the idea. As the parent of a teenager, I was looking for a chance to spend some real quality time together away from the distractions of everyday life. It turned out to be exactly that – ten days of bonding, laughing and sharing an incredible adventure that we’ll both remember for years.

But I think one of his proudest moments was showing me just how capable he was – he became our chief navigator and quickly mastered the subway system, often leading the way with complete confidence. Since we’ve returned, he’s been a lot more independent and confident at making his own way to places and just hanging out with his friends.

the amazing fashion stores in Shibuya. We also loved Nara Park. Watching me get completely surrounded by deer while he calmly mastered the art of feeding them one at a time was hilarious. Gotemba Peace Park in Hakone was another huge highlight – the views were breathtaking and it was one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever visited. We got lucky with the weather that day; the views of Mount Fuji were gorgeous.
Q What was the accommodation like? A Excellent. We stayed in a mixture of modern city hotels
and more traditional accommodation, which gave us a great feel for the different sides of Japan. Everywhere was comfortable, efficient and incredibly well run.

Even buying snacks becomes exciting. Japan is fascinating, welcoming, safe and endlessly interesting. We loved every minute.
Q What advice would you give to families planning their first trip to Japan?
A Don’t stress. Before we went, I was worried it would be difficult to navigate and that we’d spend the whole trip feeling lost. In reality, it was far easier than I expected.
If you’re travelling with teenagers, try to balance the cultural experiences with activities they’ll find exciting, such as chopstickmaking workshops, cooking classes, shopping and ninja-star throwing. Mixing traditional Japan with fun, hands-on experiences kept both of us engaged and made the trip a huge success.

We were in a group with two other families with children of similar ages, which added to the experience.

A We really enjoyed visiting Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands as the transfers and transport were so well organised. Everything ran smoothly and our guide, Raka, was the best! He was so personable and helpful throughout.
