When we sip a glass of wine, we rarely pause to consider the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into each bottle. Whether white, red, or rose, winemaking is a careful dance of precision, timing, and age-old knowledge. Let's take a journey from vine to bottle and uncover the fascinating winemaking process.

Red wine production, in contrast, seeks to harness the power of the grape skins. After the harvest, the whole grape - skin included - is crushed and fermented. This maceration process extracts the color, tannins, and flavor compounds from the skins, giving red wine its signature depth and complexity. Once fermentation concludes, the juice is pressed off the skins and seeds, and then the wine is aged in barrels, often oak, to add further nuance and character.

White wine begins its life in the vineyard, where the ripeness ofthe grapes is crucial. Once harvested, the grapes are swiftly pressed to extract the juice, which is then allowed to settle. The clear juice is then transferred to a fermentation vessel, usually a stainless-steel vat or an oak barrel, where the magic offermentation takes place. In this complex process, yeast converts sugar into alcohol, with the length and temperature of fermentation infiuencing the final wine's :O.avor. To further enhance its character, the wine is aged, often in oak barrels, for a period ranging from a few months to several years before bottling.

Rose wines walk a delicate middle ground between white and red. Their iconic pink hue comes from a briefencounter with the grape skins. Postharvest. the crushed grapes are allowed a short skin contact period, usually 2-24 hours. Then, much like white wine, the skins are removed, and the juice undergoes fermentation. Roses generally skip the aging process, heading straight to the bottle to retain their lively fruit :O.avors and freshness.

However, with the right approach, it can be an enjoyable journey of discovery that helps you appreciate the complexity and beauty of wine. Remember, the goal of wine tasting is not just to identify a good wine. It's about exploring your own preferences, understanding the subtleties that differentiate one wine from another, and most importantly, enjoying the rocess. Although red wines are renowned for their tannins, which provide a drying sensation in the mouth, some white wines also possess a subtle amount of tannin. These tannins often come from extended skin contact during the winemaking process or oak aging, adding complexity and a slight grip to the white wine.

Fruit Flavors

White wines often exhibit flavors of citrus fruits, such as lemon, lime, or grapefruit, as well as stone fruits like peach, apricot, and pear. Red wines commonly feature dark fruit flavors like blackberries, cherries, and plums, along with notes ofred fruits such as strawberries and raspberries. These fruit characteristics vary depending on grape variety and winemaking techniques.

Herbal and floral aromas and flavors can be found in both red and white wines. The use of oak barrels during the aging process is a common practice in winemaking, and it can impact both red and white wines. Oak imparts flavors of vanilla, spice, and toasted notes, adding complexity and depth to the wine. While red wines often spend more time in oak, resulting in more pronounced oak flavors, some white wines also benefit from oak aging, acquiring a creamy texture and flavors like butter, caramel, or coconut.

Both red and white wines can range in sweetness levels, from bone-dry to dessert-sweet. Dry wines contain minimal residual sugar, providing a clean and crisp taste. Off-dry wines have a touch of sweetness that balances the acidity, while semi-sweet wines have a more noticeable sweetness. Dessert wines, often enjoyed after a meal, can be intensely sweet, with flavors of honey, dried fruits, and syrup.

Golden Bliss: Mustard Season in Napa Valley BY: ETHAN WESCOATT

For newcomers to Napa Valley, the sight of thousands ofgolden blooms bursting from the vineyards is a beautiful, albeit somewhat curious, spectacle. These blooms transform the landscape into a brilliant yellow sea and.fill the air with the poignant aroma ofmustard, marking their critical role in the annual grape production cycle.

The mustard plant, a nonnative species whose specific origins in California are unclear, has been the preferred cover crop for over 150 years. Its root networks prevent soil erosion and aid growers with irrigation during the rainy season. The bright flowers attract beneficial insects like ladybugs, while their spicy flavor deters harmful pests. At season's end, vineyards are plowed, turning the mustard plants into nutrient-rich soil for the new grapevines. Inspired by these joyful little flowers and the sense of renewal they bring, artist and gallery owner Jessel Miller revitalized the Napa Valley Mustard Celebration in 2022, rescuing it from near obscurity. After a dormant period following the 2011 festival, she persuaded her neighbor, Thomas Bougetz from Bougetz Cellar, to feature her "Mustard Muse" painting-the highlight of the 2011 festival-on a wine bottle. With renewed vigor, Miller devoted considerable time, money, and effort to mobilizing the local artist community, engaging civic leaders and business owners, and funding the Napa Valley Mustard Celebration website. What began as a concept to boost Napa's revenue during the grapevines' dormant season has evolved into a festival showcasing events, mustard-inspired art, and the food and wine of each community from American Canyon to Calistoga. The Napa Valley Mustard Celebration kicks off in January, offering a plethora of activities. Visit Sterling Vineyards and Priest Ranch for unique pairings and wine tastings. Lucy Restaurant & Bar at Bardessono & Hotel Yountville is hosting Mustard Lunch and Dinner through March, and the Heart of Friendship gallery at Yountville Arts opens on January 18. Don't miss the Atlas Peak Road Opening Celebration at Jessel Gallery on February 3-4. The Photo Finale, a key open photography exhibition at Jessup Cellars Gallery in Yountville, begins March 1. Revel in the photographic art capturing the season's beauty or submit your own mustard-themed images by February 1, 2024. Nestled between two wine shops on the corner of1st and Coombs stands a charming castle that seems to have transcended time. To a newcomer, the sight of cut gray stone and a crown of parapets might appear unusual but locals recognize this proud little building as a cherished landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It also holds the distinction of being the longest continually operating library in the State of California. In the 1890s, the City of Napa approached George E. Goodman, a banker, philanthropist, and beloved local figure for a land donation to construct a free public library. Goodman, with his forward-thinking vision, fully comprehended the significance of the request. The establishment of a city library marked a profound transformation for Napa evolving it from a frontier township into a cultured city. Not only did Goodman generously donate the land, but he also personally financed the entire $15,000 construction project-an amount equivalent to nearly $370,000 today. George and his wife, Carrie, bestowed both the land and the building to the City of Napa, with the explicit stipulation that it would remain dedicated to the use of a Free Public Library. However, a notable condition was attached: the library would remain in the city's possession as long as it continued to function as a library. Otherwise, it would revert to the ownership of his heirs. In 1970, as part of Downtown Napa's redevelopment, the city relocated its library to another building.Jess Doud, the Executive Director of the Napa County Historical Society, successfully negotiated with the Goodman heirs and the Society's research library has called this historic building home ever since.

Goodman entrusted Architect Luther M. Turton with the project, and Turton designed the library in the Richardson Romanesque style. It featured round arched windows, rusticated stone facing, structural solidity enhanced by the depth of the window and door openings, and castellated parapets lining the roof. In its early days, it stood in stark contrast to its wooden and brick neighbors; and through extensive preservation efforts, the original layout, woodwork and fixtures continue to captivate visitors to this day. Hidden away amidst wineries and resorts, The Goodman Library serves as a testament to the bygone era of the frontier town that once thrived here. Like many of Napa's other historic landmarks, it has welcomed countless generations through its doors across the ages. Evidence of this rich history can be found in the three railings along the staircase. The first and the tallest, serves as the original railing for adults. The second and the shortest, harkens back to when the Goodman Library hosted the children's library in 1939. The third, a brass railing, was installed during a seismic and accessibility retrofit in 2007. The library faced damage to its bracing and roof during the 2014 Napa earthquake, but it reopened its doors three years and after a $1.75 million restoration. Today, the Goodman Library is home to the Napa County Historical Society and Napa County Landmarks, along with regular museum exhibitions on historical topics, inviting the curious to explore the stories of those who once walked within its stone walls. #TheNapaCrush @) (1)
