Before the curtain rises for what I know will be a mesmerizing performance by The Joffrey Ballet, I want to welcome you to The Music Center and our iconic Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. It is our honor to bring The Joffrey Ballet back to Los Angeles and to The Music Center for the first time since the 2018 Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center residency of the company’s beautiful Romeo & Juliet. Many Angelenos have a strong affinity for The Joffrey Ballet given its eightyear residency at The Music Center (from 1983–1991), and it is wonderful to have them back gracing the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion stage!

What you will see from The Joffrey this time is truly incredible as we present the Los Angeles debut of the company’s award-winning Anna Karenina. This powerful story about forbidden love is a glorious, stunning production, and the dancers are exquisite. With new choreography by Ukrainian-born choreographer Yuri Possokhov and a new score by award-winning composer Ilya Demutsky, this production is another example of the expansion of the ballet canon with stories centered on powerful women. Last summer, we were delighted to present the debut performance of Dutch National Ballet with Frida, the story of Frida Kahlo, and this coming July, we will present Ballet Hispánico (July 12–14) with an explosive portrait of Eva “Evita” Perón in Doña Perón. I hope you will join us to explore her legacy in a piece danced by the company that is considered the largest Latine cultural organization in the United States and one of America’s cultural treasures.

With these dance residencies, we are striving not only to dimensionalize the stories told onstage, but also to expand the reach and impact of the companies and these works by bringing dance-related opportunities to more people in Los Angeles. In the case of The Joffrey Ballet, we were delighted to partner with the company and the Los Angeles County Aging & Disabilities Department to bring free dance workshops to senior citizens around Los Angeles County, featuring a Joffrey Ballet teaching artist. All workshop participants were also invited to attend a dress rehearsal of Anna Karenina. Summer is well underway at The Music Center, and we would love to have you come dance with us as we return with our much-beloved free program The Music Center’s Dance DTLA, offering eight Friday nights of dancing under the stars on Jerry Moss Plaza.
