Hello, Chaverim?… I
took a hike on Bear Mountains. It was supposed to be a two-hour trail, but it seems like I lost my way. I am trekking for five hours already and it doesn’t seem like I’m finding my way out. It’s getting dark and cold and I have no jacket or sweater to keep warm. I’m also running low on water.
“
THIS IS A TYPICAL CALL TO THE CHAVERIM OF ROCKLAND HOTLINE WHICH IS COVERED BY THEIR HIGHLY TRAINED SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM.
“
Pesach 2021
A
bout sixteen years ago during the winter of 2005-06, the founder of Chaverim of Rockland – the first Chaverim unit in the world - realized that there is a void that must be filled. Calls kept on coming in to the Chaverim helpline from frantic community members reporting on lost hikers. Time and again the callers said that they were advised by law enforcement that Search and Rescue resources would be deployed after the hiker has been missing for 24 hours or more.
Since Rockland County is surrounded by tens of thousands of acres of mountainous terrain, with more than two hundred miles of hiking trails, it became ordinary for people to go out hiking. But without any hiking experience it is very easy for people to get disoriented and lose their trail. Furthermore, when a person is lost in a forest, even if contact is made via phone, there is no way to give the person directions, such as “walk straight and keep to the right”, because all surrounding areas look the same. People might be under the impression that they’re walking straight while they keep on going in circles.
Chaverim of Rockland
knew it’s time to act. They must be the pioneers once again and launch their own
Search & Rescue Team to answer those helpless calls. They must assemble a qualified team, trained to locate lost people and to rescue injured hikers or those in serious danger of injury in remote and forested areas.
An internal message was sent out to all Chaverim of Rockland volunteers. Anyone physically and emotionally fit for the rigorous work and continuous training of Wilderness Search and Rescue can join the special unit.
I
n order to fit the profile, the volunteers must be able to hike for many hours while dragging approximately forty pounds of gear in their backpack. Additionally, they must be ready to drop whatever they are doing and respond to the calls at a moments notice. Within a short period of time, a team of twentytwo qualified volunteers was assembled, all ready willing and able to launch the new team.
At the onset, the team received rigorous training from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers as well as from the Rockland County Sheriff’s office. These training courses included search management, national incident command systems (ICS), map and compass search techniques, the use of global positioning system (GPS) units and basic first aid.
Those training courses were followed by a Wilderness Survival Training conducted by survivalist and founder of Rockland Chaverim, Reb Shaye Zev Erps. The training was conducted at a huge 140+ acre undeveloped terrestrial, where the team was taught crucial survival skills while operating in the wilderness. This included keeping warm, trekking on slippery and treacherous surfaces, as well as improvised navigational skills using the sun, the moon and the stars. Once the initial training was done, Chaverim purchased the most sophisticated SAR equipment and gear for the volunteers, and the team was all set and ready to roll. Once the team was in operation it didn’t take long for them to be put to work. Within the first couple of months the team started responding to Search and Rescue calls. Now – fifteen years later, with members of our community taking to the trails like never before, Search and Rescue operations have become ever more important. As a result, the Chaverim team has grown to more than forty members. Being part of the team is a tremendous commitment, firstly, due to the continuous training, which is held during the most inclement weather, as you never know under which circumstances the next call will come in. Secondly, since most of the calls come in when people are already desperate, such as Erev Shabbos and Erev Yom
Tov. There were many instances where the Chaverim team deployed right before Shabbos, on the night of Shemini Atzeres and Shevii Shel Pesach. These are times when everyone wants to be home with their families rather than hiking the woods with forty pounds of gear. Furthermore, an average Chaverim call takes five to ten minutes but an average Search and Rescue call can take four to five hours, and sometimes even more. Throughout the years, Chaverim Search and Rescue developed close working relationships with multiple law enforcement agencies who recognize their services, respect their expertise, and even count on them for mutual assistance.
ONE
dark and rainy night several months ago, at about 5:40 pm, a call came in to the Chaverim Hotline from a third party. The caller reported that he just got a call from his friend who went hiking at Kakiat Park but after several hours he couldn’t find his way out. The hiker managed to send his live location via WhatsApp but then his phone battery went dead, and all contact with him was lost.
