HAPPY WITH YOUR MAGAZINE

(Re: Paper Crisis, Issue 349) I am writing in response to the letter in regard to your using different paper in one section of your magazine due to the strike at the paper mills. I’d like to assure you that the quality of your magazine surpasses other magazines that are available to readers each week. Additionally, I would be happy with your magazine no matter what paper it was printed on. Keep up the excellent work. Sarah W.

A SECRET INGREDIENT?

(Re: Strawberries and Cream, Issue 348) Thank you so much for your magazine! We wait for it every week, and there’s something in it for every member of our family to enjoy. You had black pepper listed as one of the ingredients in the strawberry muffins last week. I imagine that’s a mistake. Or is it a new secret ingredient that will bring out all the flavors? Please clarify. G.N. M&S SHOE REPAIR

LIBBY GOLDBERGER RESPONDS: The black pepper is not an error. Like you said, it’s there to give these muffins an intriguing kick!

one’s actual kashrus standards, as opposed to one’s hechsher list. I have noticed that those who move from large communities to smaller ones have different experiences. Some people are wonderful Jews and very committed, but are not self-motivating. They need external pressure to help them be who they want to be. Obviously, for people like that, moving to a town with a minimal number of frum families would be devastating. On the other hand, sometimes we imagine living in crowded, expensive places as having no religious downside, but that is not always so. Financial pressure in these areas may tempt some people to compromise in the halachos of money, for instance. And how many families are forced to use every possible form of government assistance just to squeak by? What’s more, crowded places have a terrible effect on our psyches. Allow me to share an experience I recently had. I live near a yeshivah where the boys are let out to play for a bit in the afternoon. Some of the boys knocked out the windows of an empty back apartment this winter, and the pipes broke. This happened three times, and we all share the water bill. This spring they found an ax and some tools in the empty apartment during their break and wreaked terrible damage on our property. Their principal told me he was sorry but I have to understand that the children have no place to play and just need to let out their energy. I asked him if it’s a youth-at-risk yeshivah, and he assured me it’s just a mainstream school in a place with too little room for children to run around and play. Now if the effect of overcrowding is pushing good little boys to do such things out of pent-up energy and boredom, might we not have an obligation to spread out a bit? J.G.

YOUR VOICE STAND UP FOR OUR MORAHS

Dear Parents, Please pause to think: How many schools started this school year without all positions being filled? How many of these empty slots were eventually filled, and how many resulted in a free period or early dismissal for the students? Yes, unfortunately, we are in the middle of a teacher crisis, with many successful teachers leaving the teaching field and many schools struggling to fill vacant positions. As a teacher myself, I would like to bring awareness to why many teachers leave their jobs, and how you, as parents, can perhaps make a difference. First, teachers are being overworked and underpaid. The number of hours a teacher invests into her work and students, and the amount her salary offers, simply don’t match. Moreover, many expect of teachers too much and appreciate them THE MONSEY VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS.

too little. They’re expected to be kind to their students, have great management skills, and definitely have rigorous learning happening in their classrooms. If they fail to do one of the above to perfection, the complaints come piling in. However, if they do excel in every aspect, not infrequently do their efforts and hard work go unnoticed. I am not, chas v’shalom, denouncing our outstanding figures of authority. Principals are truly working hard to go that extra mile to show their teachers that they are valued and appreciated. I am writing to you, the mothers of my dear students: Did you see the creative craft your preschooler brought home from school? Do you know how much planning and thought lies behind this one sweet project? Did you give thought to the multiplication chant your third grader hums enthusiastically? Behind that chant lies a teacher’s caring heart and a teacher’s intense efforts to teach her students the fundamentals of math. Consider

your junior high daughter’s history project. Notice the teacher’s efforts to deliver to her students a program that is fun to work on, yet educational and informative. And wait, don’t forget your high schooler feverishly preparing for her upcoming finals. She, too, had teachers investing their heart and soul to give over lessons with academic excellence and compassion. So yes, stand up for our morahs; give them an applause for their dedicated and incredible work. As the school year is drawing to a close, express your appreciation to your daughter’s educators. Take the moment to write a sincere thank you note acknowledging all the work the teacher has done this past year. And yes, with your positive words, you can empower one more teacher to stay in her position for the upcoming school year. Sincerely, A Teacher

PARSHAS BAMIDBAR

SHAVUOS V’Hivdilanu Min Hato’im

the shul. They went home together and enjoyed a beautiful seudah. Over the meat and wine, the rav took the opportunity to ask the question that was bothering him: “Why do you always make sure to leave shul before Birchas Kohanim?” The man hesitated, but soon went ahead and shared his story: I was in Auschwitz during the war. We slept in an overcrowded barrack — 800 men in all — and the conditions were unbearable. One of my fellow inmates was an older Yid who managed to maintain his sanity in an unbelievable way. He became the unspoken leader of our group, serving as the listening ear and strengthening the weak with words of chizuk. Two weeks before Pesach, he announced with deep determination: “We will have a Seder here on Pesach night!” He convinced some inmates who had connections to the kitchen to bake some matzos, and despite their fear, they managed to produce two whole matzos. Seder night arrived. When we were all meant to be sleeping, we crouched into sitting positions on the crowded floor, and the older man began reciting the Haggadah with depth of feeling — all by heart. Then he crumbled the matzos and distributed the pieces among the inmates. Two matzos had to be enough for 800 people! No one needed to prepare the maror — we had plenty. And our four kosos were filled with salty tears rather than wine. Indeed! We managed to commemorate Pesach, Auschwitz-style. Suddenly, the door broke open. In marched an SS official, head held high, proud to have caught us in the act. We all scampered to our “beds” fearfully, but it was too late. Brandishing his pistol, the Nazi grabbed the first Yid he saw. He pointed the gun at his head and shouted: “Who arranged this?!”

The Midrash on this week’s parsha says that when Klal Yisroel received the Torah, the nations of the world protested: “Why were they the ones chosen to receive the Torah?” Hakadosh Baruch Hu replied that Klal Yisroel has yichus, as it says, “Se’u es rosh kol adas Bnei Yisroel l’mishpechosam l’beis avosam — Take the sum of all the congregation of Yisroel, by families according to their fathers’ houses” (Bamidbar 1:2). In contrast, do the nations have yichus? Hashem asked the nations to prove their lineage, as it says, “Huvi la’Hashem mishpechos amim — Ascribe to Hashem families of people” (Tehillim 96:7). The entire exchange is strange. After all, before giving the Torah to Klal Yisroel, Hakadosh Baruch Hu offered it to the nations, yet they declined. Why are they complaining now? And why is family lineage a reason to merit receiving the Torah? THE RAV OF A SHUL noticed something interesting. Every yom tov, when it was time for Birchas Kohanim, one of his mispallelim would leave the shul. The rav wondered why this man never remained to receive the brachos along with the rest of the kehillah. He decided to invite him to his home for the yom tov day meal. Surely this would encourage the man to remain until the very end of davening. To his surprise, just as the Kohanim walked up, this man walked out. After davening, the rav found the man waiting for him outside

The Yid did not respond. “If you don’t tell me who organized this, I will kill everyone in the room, one by one!” The older Yid stood up and approached the Nazi. Tearing open his prison uniform, he exposed his chest. “I arranged everything. Here is my heart… If you want to kill me, you can!” The soldier leveled his gun, a sinister smile on his face. We all knew that smile. It indicated that something cruel was about to happen. “I won’t kill you just like that!” he said. “Tomorrow we will gather all the inmates, and I will tell everyone what you’ve done. You will be punished for all to see…” And that’s what happened. The next morning the older Yid was placed on a stage, and everyone stood around. After announcing the “sin” the Yid had committed, the SS official turned to the poor target. “What is your last wish? Would you like some water? Bread? Soup?” “No, I don’t want food,” the Yid replied. “I would like to give something to my dear brothers here. I have nothing to give them, but I am a Kohen and today is yom tov. I would like to bless them before I go…” The man lifted his arms and slowly recited the famed words, “Yevarechecha Hashem v’yishmerecha…” You could slice the silence with a knife. There wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd. The ground, saturated with Jewish blood, became wet with salty tears. It was such a display of emunah, of the power of the Yiddishe neshamah. The Nazis, yemach shemam, tried to expurgate our humanity — but they were not able to break us. This man triumphed over their efforts to squash his tzelem Elokim. After the war, I traveled to the United States. With the intention of escaping the bitter memories, I left Yiddishkeit completely. At one point, I was about to marry a non-Jewish girl, but the image of that Birchas Kohanim stood before my eyes. I couldn’t do it. I ended up marrying Jewish. I also wanted to give my kids a fully secular education with non-Jewish peers, but again, that older Yid would not allow me to do so… “NOW DO YOU understand why I leave shul before Birchas Kohanim every yom tov?” the man asked as he wrapped up

his tale. “I don’t want to erase the memory of that Birchas Kohanim in Auschwitz. I want to remember it forever, and I don’t want to exchange it for any other Birchas Kohanim…” * * * * * The sefer Divrei Aggadah explains: Two men wish to support their families. One opens a small grocery where all the neighborhood families shop when they run out of staples. He learns how much to stock based on the demand, and he sits at the register, day in, day out. He cannot charge too much; after all, there is a limit to the amount customers will pay for a loaf of bread or bottle of milk. His profit is limited, yet steady. The second man imports specialty items from abroad. He travels to China and Singapore and strikes heavy deals. As the exclusive importer of these products, he gets to name his resale pricing. His revenue is unlimited, the possibilities never-ending. Yet he faces a great risk. He can never know if his inventory will move and earn him a profit or if he will be left with a large deficit. Which industry is preferable? The answer depends where you are coming from. For a regular young man who needs to borrow funds to start up his business, it may make more sense to go small, yet steady. But if one has a rich father… he can afford to take the risk. Worst case, if his ventures fail, his father will bail him out. He only stands to gain from jumping in and trying his luck. This was the argument of the nations of the world. “We were given the Seven Mitzvos Bnei Noach. We may not be able to gain much from them, but we don’t have much to lose either. How could the Yidden undertake 613 mitzvos? Their gain may be greater, but it is a huge risk!” Hashem replied, “Do you have yichus?” Indeed, for the nations the second option would be a great risk, for they have no backbone supporting them. But Klal Yisroel does have yichus — the Avos and their ancestors for coverage. In front of their eyes is the mesirus nefesh of their grandfathers, and this will empower them with the ability to keep the Torah and mitzvos and ace all nisyonos that come their way.

y d a e R u o Y e r A ? r e h g i H e v i L To

On June 21 and 22 at the Prudential Center, we will stand with 40,000 fellow women as we reaffirm our commitment to upholding the kedushah of Klal Yisroel. We will celebrate Living Higher.

What Is Living Higher? There is a fundamental difference between thriving and surviving. Surviving means “to continue to live or exist,” while thriving can be defined as “to grow or develop well; to prosper or to flourish.” So many of us claim to have a goal of thriving, so why is the majority of us still just surviving? Perhaps it’s the fear of the unknown, or because of habit. But here’s the exciting part: Just thinking about a life beyond surviving puts you closer to thriving. The first step is to understand that you are living for a purpose. Thriving occurs when you have a life filled with purpose, vitality and connection with Hashem. This isn’t tied to a specific salary, job title, type of car or relationship. Material possessions are not part of the equation for thriving. It is our connection to our neshamos that allows us to thrive. When we thrive rather than just survive, we are living higher. Our entire existence is on a higher plane. We are happier, feel more fulfilled and are more successful.

How Can We Live Higher? Every generation has its unique set of circumstances, specifically designed by Hashem’s, with His Infinite wisdom, all as part of His Master plan. We were each placed in our own lives by design, and with a personal mission. This mission is our primary opportunity to grow and connect with Hashem on a personal level. Our gedolim, including Harav Don Segal, shlit”a, and Harav Elya Ber Wachtfogel, shlit”a, have identified the nisayon of technology as the

primary mission and opportunity of our generation. Hashem has given us a wonderful gift: a way to grow closer to Him in a way designed especially for our generation. For most of us, this is an entirely new perspective and understanding of what technology is. We tend to think of technology as anything from a necessary evil to a yetzer hara that traps us in its web. But our gedolim are teaching us to broaden our view. The challenge of technology is a great opportunity gifted to us by Hashem Himself as a vehicle for growth. We each have areas in our lives that personify greatness, and we each have areas that we may be ashamed of. There’s nothing wrong with this; it’s part and parcel of being human. Some of us will help everyone we can; others would never pass up the opportunity to give some tzedakah. Some of us will be careful about lashon hara, while others daven with great kavanah. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we each have areas where we are not necessarily proud of ourselves, and we tend to accept ourselves for who we are. Into which category does technology fall? Is our relationship with our phones and devices one we are proud of — or one we accept? Shouldn’t we elevate ourselves and make this an area of personal greatness?

Unified But Not Uniform In the words of the Rosh Yeshivah, Harav Elya Brudny, shlit”a, “We are unified, but not uniform.” Like the twelve shevatim, each following their unique path in avodas Hashem, each community’s leaders have fine-tuned how and when our technology usage should be guided. And of course, June 1, 2022

What My Son Taught Me Who would have thought that I would learn this life-changing lesson from my eightmonth-old baby? Let me explain… A number of years ago, when my husband was still in kollel and I was just back from seminary, the thought of owning a smartphone was foreign to us. However, fast-forward a few years, and we were both working and needed smartphones for our jobs. Of course, we asked our rav, who directed us to TAG, and we had our devices filtered properly. When our son was born, my husband and I both decided that we would not allow our baby to watch any videos or have any exposure to technology until he was older.

each and every one of us, from a young lady fresh out of seminary to a mother and grandmother, in accordance to our own personal needs, truly desires to utilize this opportunity to grow and live higher.

Why You Cannot Miss This Event On June 21 and 22, more than 40,000 women of all ages and stages will unite in Prudential Center with a common mission and goal: to Live Higher. This historic event is the first of its kind — a women-only evening of inspiration that will lift up each participant and empower her to elevate her life and the lives of her family. The program will prove to be innovative and the message revolutionary. Ten years ago, Klal Yisroel united in Citi Field, and we stood up to take control of our lives and learn from our gedolim what Hashem wants from our generation. Since then, TAG has been at the forefront of educating and empowering our community to utilize the opportunity Hashem has given us to grow and achieve our mission by living higher and not allowing technology to bring us down. Our gedolim have instructed us that it is time once again to spread the important message of what technology really is and how it relates to the entire Klal Yisroel. This time, our gedolim felt that it is important to address the women and young ladies of our generation. The Yiddishe mammas — present and future — who are the greatest influence on our homes and future generations, are the ones whom we can entrust with this important charge and responsibility. Tickets are being reserved fast, so do not wait. Reserve yours today at TAG.org or by calling 718.635.2380 or emailing Kinus@TAG.org.

That was until one sleepless night, after the baby had been crying for hours, and my head was pounding. I needed a break. In a moment of weakness, I thought to myself, “What could be so bad about Uncle Moishy?” It worked. My son was calmed; I got a much-needed break. No harm done, right? Well, the next day I was playing with my son in the living room. He had just started to crawl and was slowly learning to make his way across the room. Suddenly, he spotted my phone on the floor and he went for it. With a level of enthusiasm and gusto I had never seen in him before, he lunged for the phone. At first I was laughing at how cute he was, panting with excitement as he held his newfound prize. But then another thought hit me like a ton of bricks, and my eyes teared up. What was the allure of this device? What had I done to my son? But deep down, I knew that my feelings weren’t about my son — they were about me. In the innocence of a child, I saw myself. I saw myself reaching for my phone first thing in the morning. Yes, before saying Modeh Ani, and even before saying good morning to my husband. I saw myself, the moment Shabbos is over, when I can’t control my urge to get updated. I quickly realized that it was time to switch off, and switch on some more face-to-face interaction instead. My eight-month-old son taught me that when you are connected to technology, you are disconnected from everything else. Because constantly checking my phone when I am with others has reduced the quality of my relationships with the people I care about most.

Chaverim Nabs Trucker Who Assaulted On-Call Hatzolah Member In a display of interagency cooperation, quick work by Chaverim of Rockland led to the arrest of a suspect who reportedly assaulted a Hatzolah member in Spring Valley last Sunday afternoon. Yeshiva World News reported that a Hatzolah member responded to a call on Ridge Avenue, leaving his vehicle partially blocking the roadway. A trucker, who was angry that he couldn’t drive down Ridge Avenue, assaulted the Hatzolah member, leaving him with minor injuries before fleeing the scene on foot. The Spring Valley Police Department and Chaverim of Rockland both responded to the scene. Chaverim members located the suspect, who was arrested by police after being identified by his victim.

Lake Suzanne Beautiful Once Again, Thanks to Inter-Agency Cleanup Effort Approximately 35 people turned out last Thursday armed with gloves, trash bags and more in a joint effort to beautify a well-known Monsey landmark that is used all too often as a dumping ground — Lake Suzanne. Volunteers from Ramapo Litter Control, Chaverim of Rockland, Keep Rockland Beautiful and the County Conservation Corps rolled up their sleeves and got to work carting off debris that had accumulated over the winter months, reported Rockland Daily. “The plan is to make this lake the most beautiful spot in Monsey — as it has been in the past, it will be again,” said Town

of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht. While cleanups take place at Lake Suzanne every year, Specht said that this was the largest one to date. Efforts are also underway to continue improvements at the site. “We are planning a community meeting in which all residents will have the opportunity to share what projects they’d like for the town to work on next,” said Specht.

Egg Prices Expected to Continue Rising Due to Bird Flu Outbreak Egg prices will continue heading upward as a record bird flu outbreak has caused domestic egg production to hit a seven-year low. Bloomberg reported that the cost of eggs could rise as high as 21% compared to a year ago in the coming weeks. That number represents a significant jump over April, where prices were up just 6% to 7%, and is the biggest price hike among food staples tracked by the United States Department of Agriculture. Over 38 million birds have been affected by the bird flu epidemic, a reality that has significantly impacted the number of egg-laying birds and the production of table eggs, sending prices soaring in recent months.

Hepatitis A Outbreak Prompts FDA Warning on Organic Strawberries A multistate outbreak of hepatitis A may be linked to tainted organic strawberries, prompting the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and several Canadian health agencies to issue warnings regarding their consumption. The strawberries in question were packed under the FreshKampo and HEB labels and were sold between March 5 and April 25 in Aldi, Walmart, Trader Joe’s, Kroger, Safeway, HEB and Weis Markets, among others stores. While the strawberries are beyond their regular shelf life, the FDA is recommending that anyone who might have purchased and frozen organic strawberries packed under the FreshKampo or HEB labels should discard the product immediately. Those who froze organic strawberries that were bought fresh, and are unsure of their brand or purchase place, are being advised to discard those items as well. Currently, 27 hepatitis A cases that may be linked to organic strawberries have been reported in California, Minnesota and Canada. Anyone who may have eaten potentially affected strawberries in the last two weeks and has not been vaccinated against hepatitis A is encouraged to call their health care provider.

C H A P T E R 12 RECAP: At a loss as to what to do next, Chaim Simcha calls his cousin, Lenny Bergman, a real estate agent whose business is currently suffering. Lenny is uneasy about a housing investment he’s made off in Detroit that doesn’t seem to be going well.

C

haim Simcha met Lenny in the latter’s office. It was large, airy and nicely decorated, though Chaim Simcha couldn’t help noticing how empty and quiet the place seemed to be. No secretary met him at the door, and no one buzzed him in. When he came to the outer office, it opened at his touch, but he was unsure what to do. He was a few minutes early for their appointment. Should he knock on the inner door, or wait until Lenny signaled that he was ready? He decided to wait. However, as soon as the door clicked shut behind him, a voice spoke in the inner office. “Right, that’s my next appointment. I gotta go.” A phone slammed down on a receiver, and Lenny called out, “That you, Rabbi?” “It’s me,” Chaim Simcha replied. Lenny came out and shook his hand, then led

him into the inner office. “It’s good to see you!” Lenny said enthusiastically. “You caught me at the perfect time.” He shuffled a few papers around his desk, folded his arms in front of him, and gave Chaim Simcha a look of attention. “So. What’s up?” Chaim Simcha surveyed the almost sterile room, the piles of papers that clearly hadn’t been moved in a while, the mostly empty appointment book, and understood. His cousin was obviously going through a slow phase, and just as obviously was ashamed of it. Likely even the slammed phone was theatrical; nobody hung up a phone that loudly. He might not even have been talking to anyone. “It’s good to see you, too, Lenny,” Chaim Simcha began. Then he ventured, “You look well.” This wasn’t strictly true. Lenny looked tired, overweight, and there were anxiety

lines around his eyes, and he wore a suit that was clean but had definitely seen better days. But he smiled in all the right places as he said, “Thanks! You’re doing well yourself, I hope? The shul doing okay?” “K’naina hora. You should come visit sometime.” “I just might. I gotta tell you, it’s nice to see someone bringing back the days of Lodzer glory. My dad used to tell stories of the Rebbe. You know somebody once tried to put him in cherem? Some crazy old guy. All the local rabbis were furious about it. But Reb Menashe came into shul the next day, gave a bang on the bimah, and publicly asked forgiveness before bursting into tears!” Chaim Simcha smiled. “Such a tzaddik…” Of course, he’d heard that story a dozen times, but he didn’t want to spoil his host’s enjoyment in telling the tale. Lenny leaned forward. “Anyway, you’re not paying for my time just to shoot the breeze. Tell me, what can I do for you?” “It’s about this.” Chaim Simcha reached into his pocket and pulled out a copy of the letter from Poland. “Came in the mail recently. They’ve got a sefer that belonged to the Rebbe, and they want to find his oldest descendant.” Lenny scanned the document quickly. “The oldest des — That would be from Mischa’s side, no?” “That’s right. I’ve already tracked down who it is — Zach Ganz. Ever hear of him?” Lenny looked up. “Should I have?” “Well, he was the mayor of Morristown. I just thought maybe you had.” “Nope.” Lenny glanced back at the letter in his hand. “What do you want to do? Sue him for rights to the thing?” Chaim Simcha sat up in shock. “No, of course not. The Rebbe left it to him, not me. That’s b’chlal not the point, anyway. Zach’s happy to lend it to us semi-permanently. But they won’t surrender the manuscript unless he goes there in person to prove his identity, and Zach isn’t interested in a trip to Poland.” “I see.” Lenny leaned back in his chair and thought. “And if nobody claims the manuscript?” “They’ll probably keep it,” Chaim Simcha confirmed. “The truth is, that might be part of the reason they’re

Lenny gave him a sharp look. “How “Let me ask you this, Rabbi,” Lenny do you figure?” said suddenly. “It’s a ksav yad from the Rebbe,” Chaim Simcha turned around. By our zeide. The Torah he teaches is… it’s the whole point of what I’m trying to do with the Lodzer shteeble. No one wants to bring that manuscript home more than I do. B’emes! But we can’t lie to get our hands on it. No funny business. That’s not the way we do things, especially not with a davar sheb’kedusha like this. If Hashem wants us to get it, we’ll get it without playing games.” He offered his hand and gave his host a tight smile. “Thanks for your time, Lenny. Zeitz gezunt.” * * * * *

Lenny watched the rabbi leave his office and heaved a sigh. He had a lot of respect for his cousin, who was single-handedly bringing back the old greatness of the Lodz dynasty. But Rabbi Ginzburg was being hopelessly naive if he thought the Poles would surrender a valuable manuscript without their terms being met. He could just see them sending him another letter in a few months’ time: As the heir to this manuscript has not stepped forward, it will be donated to a museum for the benefit of posterity. Or: It will be sold at auction. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Yad Vashem, while the remainder… Feh. Even if they would sell it, Lenny just knew they’d keep most of the money for themselves. And you couldn’t just leave a priceless document in the hands of the very government that cooperated with the Germans! That would be a crime! And that they should get the money for it…? He stared pensively out the window, wishing he had a solution to his own problems that was as simple and elegant as the one he’d proposed to the rabbi. He certainly wouldn’t just sit there, waiting for someone else to ruin him, if an easy solution was within reach. Unfortunately, finding reliable tenants who would rent homes in one of the worst neighborhoods in America was considerably more complicated than simply rearranging a few dates on a family tree. Lenny’d been wracking his brain for answers for weeks, but nothing came to him. Outside in the parking lot, Rabbi Ginzburg slid into his car, and Lenny watched idly from his office as the lights turned on and the car edged gingerly forward through the slushy snow. It was time for Lenny to be honest with himself, Lenny decided. The investment had been a bad idea from the start. Manny had warned him. Stuart had warned him. He had nobody to blame but himself. And now the whole thing was going to pot. He couldn’t even flip the houses at a loss, because, unlike him, most people were smart enough to steer clear of any property in that neighborhood. There were no buyers. And so the properties sat there, costing him just as much as they earned. And now another tenant wanted to worm out of his contract. Unless he won the lottery or something, there was no way this was going to work out… Rabbi Ginzburg’s car disappeared from the parking lot. Meanwhile, Lenny kept staring out the window, watching the cars on the street and worrying. TO BE CONTINUED...

It is an honor to once again bring the community a serial by the author of the well-received novel The Impostor, Rabbi Yaakov Yosef Reinman, known by the pseudonym Avner Gold. The Long Road to Freedom resumes after the previous book in the twelve-volume series, The Marrano Prince. Though it is a continuation of one family’s saga of fleeing from the bloodthirsty grasp of the Inquisition, one need not read The Marrano Prince to follow the story of its sequel, for each book in the series can stand on its own. Solely for the sake of adding depth to the reader’s experience, we provide a summary of The Marrano Prince before launching into the serialized version of The Long Road to Freedom.

on Pedro gazed out at his manicured surroundings, ever appreciative of the beauty of his native Spain. As Duke of Monteverde, his life was one of privilege, replete with a magnificent estate bustling with servants to care for his beloved family. Far too soon, however, he would be forced to part from them, having been designated by the Queen Mother as Spanish ambassador to the Dutch in the wake of the Franco-Dutch war, which threatened to affect Spain. He would depart in less than three weeks. When Don Pedro broke the news to his wife, Dona Angelica, she knew that protestations would amount to nothing; one must accept the decision of the Queen Mother, who acted as Regent in place of her disabled son, the king. Realizing that traveling abroad during wartime might herald great danger, however, Dona Angelica entreated her husband to address a vital family matter before departing. “Before you go, Pedro, you must tell the children about us, who we are and what we are. It cannot be put off any longer.”

Later that night, Don Pedro gathered his family to his study. Surrounding him were his wife and sons, Sebastian, the eldest, and Felipe, the youngest. His mischievous teenage daughter, Carolina, was there, too. And Isabel. Oh, Isabel! How he feared to include his devout daughter in this meeting, but she, too, was of his blood. She, too, deserved to know the truth: that the icons she bowed before and prayed to were nothing but fake gods and a mockery of the Creator. But still… he feared telling her the truth lest she refuse his words and reject the revelation that they were a family of non-Catholics, that they worshipped the G-d of Israel. He began in the way his mother had, by telling his children an allegory of a valley-dwelling people who were given wondrous, life-giving water by a king who commanded them to guard it, to drink from it, to benefit from it. This water had the power to refine human beings, making them kind, caring, thinking, faithful and compassionate people. And though those people, the Keepers of the Water, knew their prized possession had magnificent qualities, they were scoffed at by those in the surrounding societies for partaking of what, at first sip, tasted bitter and difficult to consume. Over time, those who rejected the water became jealous of the benefits the Keepers reaped, and they began confiscating the water, attempting to free the land of the blessings they themselves refused to benefit from. The Keepers themselves were heavily persecuted and suffered many terrors, causing a significant portion of them to abandon the waters and become like non-Keepers, blending into the society of Water Haters. “After a while,” Don Pedro finished, “there was no longer any visible trace of the people of the valley and their marvelous waters, but in secret, a number of survivors drank from a hidden supply of the waters and remained steadfast.” Looking at his children, Don Pedro announced, “We are the Keepers of the Water.” Despite his attempt to break the news of their Jewishness very carefully to his children, his words came as a surprise, and to Isabel especially, as a tremendous shock. To Isabel, who spent her life bowing to statues, there was nothing more loathsome than the Jews and their faith. 200

How could she possibly be one of those swine, one of those lowly Marranos? The other children embraced the revelation with pride, realizing that they were entrusted with a special mission. Despite this knowledge, however, they had little understanding of what it meant to be a Jew. Like most hidden Jews of the time, Judaism was an enigma, something not at all understood. Thanks to the Inquisition, which had long persecuted, tortured and murdered those guilty of “Judaizing,” the Torah of Moshe was little practiced and less learned. In most Marrano homes, the only indication of Judaism was the lighting of candles before Shabbos in a hidden manner. Even the very devout would work on holidays and eat tarfus, though some invested effort to abstain from the eating of pork during the High Holy Days — at risk to their lives, for pork-refusal was a crime punishable by death at the hands of the Roman Church. And yet, despite their severely limited ability to live according to the Torah, these Marranos were almost always prepared to die al kiddush Hashem when captured by the Inquisition and forced to choose between the Church and the G-d of Israel. Don Pedro prayed his family would never be tested in this manner. Later that night, Don Pedro visited Isabela’s room to comfort the distraught young woman. What he found was a person torn between the Catholic faith of her youth, in which she’d placed her entire trust, and loyalty to her father, a “cursed Jew.” In an anguished voice, Isabel assured her father that despite her loyalty to the Church, she would not betray his secret: that he was truly a Judaizer. Her love for her father was far too great. Unlike Isabel, Sebastian yearned to know what it means to be a Jew, and before Don Pedro set sail for Amsterdam, the young man asked his father to teach him about his birthright. Don Pedro, sorely undereducated about his heritage, was forced to admit that he, too, knew little of the Torah. The most important thing to know, he said, “is to believe that the Almighty is One. He has no wives or

sons or any other partners. Anything else is heresy, no matter how it is presented. Second, you must believe that the Jews are the Almighty’s Chosen Nation, that He made a Covenant with us that can never be severed, and while we may be punished for our sins, we’re promised redemption in the end.” More than that, Don Pedro was unable to impart to his son. But, he promised, when he would return from his trip, he and Sebastian would explore the ways of the Torah, together. When Don Pedro set out for the Netherlands, the waters were particularly unfriendly. Attacked by English privateers, the Spanish war ship he sailed upon stood no chance. The privateers surrounded the ship, boarded it and massacred the sailors. Don Pedro, too, nearly joined the dead. Struck by a sword in the chest, he fell among those no longer living, unconscious. When he came to, he found the ship burning, and realized that should the fire reach the stored gunpowder, he would be part of a sudden explosion. Lashing himself to a piece of wood, Don Pedro lowered himself into the ocean and prayed that the tide would bring him to safety. He’d barely moved away from the ship when she exploded, her splintered parts sinking to the bottom of the ocean floor. Don Pedro slipped into unconsciousness as the waves

A French farmer found the nearly lifeless body of the Duke of Monteverde washed up on the shore, though his clothing bore no testament to his stately position in the Spanish kingdom. The castaway was dressed as a simple sailor, but the farmer felt duty-bound to nurse him back to health. For weeks, Don Pedro stayed in the farmer’s home, regaining his strength, until finally, he felt strong enough to be on his way. Presumed dead

by the Spanish government and his family, Don Pedro realized that he had been given a free pass to go and learn Torah without the watchful eye of the Inquisition overseeing his every move. He quietly headed to Poland, where he spent two years learning Torah. At the end of the two years, Don Pedro returned home, feigning the excuse that he’d suffered a bout of amnesia after the shipwreck, and that his memory returned to him only two years later when he fell and hit his head. Until then, he said, he’d had no recollection of Spain, his family or even his own name. The newly returned Don Pedro found that Sebastian had charted his own path toward learning about Judaism — a particularly dangerous one. Though he’d taken pains to conceal his identity, Sebastian had found a Marrano congregation in another city, which he frequented in order to pray with other crypto Jews. Don Pedro forbade Sebastian to continue these activities, for if the dragnet of the Inquisition snared even one member of the congregation, all others were in danger of being revealed. The tortures of the cold-hearted priests ensured that very few people could keep their mouths sealed for long. At his father’s insistence, Sebastian curtailed his visits to the Marrano congregation, hanging on to his father’s promise that the family would soon leave for safer shores, where they would live openly as Jews. As Don Pedro became more deeply entrenched with the affairs of the government, however, he began to tarry with preparations, leaving Sebastian impatient. When Yom Kippur arrived, Don Pedro realized with a shock that Sebastian was not to be found. With dread, he realized that Sebastian had defied his orders and had gone once again to join the Marrano congregation in prayer. With great trepidation and a prayer for forgiveness for profaning the holy day, Don Pedro traveled to the clandestine meeting place. Afraid to show his face lest informers discover his identity, Don Pedro sent his trusted cavalier, Gonzalo, to summon Sebestation. Despite his precautions of staying in the carriage, however, one attendee of the congregation, Don Mathias, caught a glimpse of the Duke’s face and recognized him… The long arm of the Inquisition eventually discovered the Marrano congregation and weeded out the members of the community, one by one. Each tortured confession led to the next, until the Inquisitors reached a dead-end as to the identity of one young male attendee. That changed, however, when, as he breathed his last, Don Mathias was forced to admit that he had glimpsed the young man entering the carriage of none

other than the Duke of Monteverde. Afraid that Don Mathias’ confession wasn’t enough to bring down the high official, the Inquisitor searched for additional incriminating evidence against Don Pedro. To that end, they targeted his devoutly Catholic daughter Isabel. Playing with her emotions, a priest tried coercing her to inform on her father’s Judaizing activities, but the distraught Isabel ran crazedly into the street and suffered a terrible accident, taking her secret with her to the grave. Undeterred, the Inquisitors continued their investigations, probing into Don Pedro’s past and discovering Jewish predecessors of years before. They also discovered evidence of Don Pedro’s two years spent in Poland. With the convictions piled against him,

guided him through a labyrinth of tunnels and stairs and into freedom. When the robed Inquisitor removed his face covering, he was surprised to see that it was actually Gonzalo, his trusty cavalier. Gonzalo explained that the Queen Mother had sent him keys to the dungeon, instructing him to help Don Pedro escape. They were given instructions to await further guidance under a Roman aqueduct in Segovia. Don Pedro was surprised to see his friend and compatriot from the palace, Father Rodrigo, waiting for them under the aqueduct. Father Rodrigo informed Don Pedro that it was he, in fact, who sent the keys, for he, too, was a secret Jew and even led a Marrano congregation of his own. He then instructed Don Pedro to hide in a cabin that belonged to his family for the next month, during which time he would work on a plan to rescue Sebastian. Surprised and emotionally exhausted, Don Pedro became loose with his tongue when Father Rodrigo asked him before parting, as one “Jew” to another, “The time you spent learning with the Rabbi in Poland, was it a revelation?” “It was more than a revelation,” Don Pedro responded. “I discovered the Almighty’s pure and holy Torah, which is more magnificent than anything else in the entire universe.” With tears in his eyes, Father Rodrigo departed from Don Pedro. When the thirty-day period passed, Don Pedro and Gonzalo waited for Father Rodrigo to reappear, but instead, they were met with an army approaching rapidly. Realizing they’d been double-crossed, they ran to the mountains in a desperate attempt to escape, but amidst the flying bullets, Don Pedro fell, ultimately leading to his becoming, once again, a prisoner of the Inquisition. Gonzalo, at Don Pedro’s urging, escaped down the side of a cliff before the sol-

While investigations were underway, Don Pedro and his family (aside from Sebastian, who had been unable to leave Spain) had been sent to Paris by the Queen Mother, but soon enough, Don Pedro was summoned to return. Realizing that their secret had been revealed, Don Pedro defied orders and left his family in France, returning by himself, whereupon he and Sebastian were jailed in deplorable conditions for months on end. Despite the extreme tortures that broke their bodies, neither man allowed his mind or soul to be broken, and neither admitted to Judaizing. After months of extreme suffering, Don Pedro was startled to be led from his cell one night by an Inquisitor who

diers could capture him. Back at the palace, before the eyes of the Queen Mother, Father Rodrigo faced Don Pedro and admitted to orchestrating the escape in order to beguile Don Pedro into admitting his Judaizing activities. The greatest gift he could give his dear friend, Rodrigo believed, was the purity of a soul free of the “taint” of Torah. In his eyes, the torture Don Pedro would suffer in the attempt at making him repent would be worth the sinless state he would achieve when he became reconciled with the Church. The Queen Mother became livid when she realized that one of her most trusted servants had been secretly practicing Judaism. Don Pedro’s punishment must fit the crime, it was decided. Don Pedro was scheduled to be killed in an elaborate auto da fe held in celebration of the wedding of the young, mentally disabled king — the very one whom Don Pedro had lovingly cared for for many years. Despite his years of servitude to the Spanish crown, Don Pedro, heretic of the Church by virtue of his Jewishness, was lashed to a pyre, ready to give up his soul al kiddush Hashem. In his final moments, a priest appeared who poured goatskins full of liquid over the wood, whispering to him that he was none other than Gonzalo, who had come to perform one last act of servitude for his beloved master. “This is special oil that practically explodes into flames…” Gonzalo whispered. “You may not escape in the ordinary sense of the word, but I assure my lord that you will not suffer long.” Before the fire was lit under him, Don Pedro screamed out to the crowd of many onlookers, “If there are any secret Jews among you, listen to my words! You are the Lord’s chosen people. Be proud of it. No matter what they do to you, hold fast to your Jewishness and instill it in your children. It’s more precious than life itself!” At that moment, an angry priest ran to Don Pedro’s pyre and threw a torch upon the wood. In a great, explosive cloud, Don Pedro’s martyred soul ascended on High…

And now begins the continuation of the story, as the remaining members of Don Pedro’s family set out on The Long Road to Freedom. 204

CHAPTER

T

he Spanish midsummer sun beat down mercilessly on the shoulders of the old man and the donkey trudging up the mountainside toward Avila. The air was perfectly still, as if paralyzed by the heat, and the silence was unbroken but for the crunch of their footsteps on the gravelly road. The white stucco houses along the roadside were shuttered and still. Even the forest crawlers lay motionless in their shaded retreats, waiting resignedly for the respite that evening would bring. The old man wore the shabby brown cassock of a Dominican friar, his cowl pushed back from his head into a dusty pile around his shoulders. He had been riding on the donkey earlier that morning, but as the heat rose ever higher, he took pity on the poor beast and dismounted. A sheen of sweat covered his redsplotched face. His longish white hair was brittle and tangled, and his chin and cheeks were overgrown with sparse stringy white hairs that were not quite a beard. His back was bent over nearly double, causing his large rough-hewn wooden crucifix to dangle free from his neck, like a weight that was too heavy to bear while standing upright. In his hand he held an oak branch that had been fashioned into a walking stick. With the donkey’s halter in one hand and his staff in the other, the old friar placed one foot in front of the other with dogged determination, speaking no word and uttering no sound, not even the slightest grunt, until the walls of the fortress monastery came into view. As he approached the massive gates of the monastery, he pulled the cowl over his head and wiped his face with the coarse cloth of his sleeve. He lifted the heavy brass knocker on the gate and let it fall. There was no response. He waited a minute or two and did

it again. Still no response. Exasperated, he banged on the gate with his heavy staff again and again until he finally heard some movement inside. A small metal panel in the center of the gate slid open, and a pair of eyes peered out at the old friar and the donkey. “What’s going on here?” a sleepy voice called out. “Who are you?” The old friar did not speak. “Please identify yourself,” said the voice from the other side of the gate. The old friar remained silent and immobile. A key turned in the lock, and the gate swung open. A barefoot corporal in an unbuttoned tunic stood there rubbing his eyes. The old friar surveyed the corporal up and down and turned away. He said nothing. “A thousand apologies for my appearance, good father,” said the corporal as he rapidly buttoned his tunic. “I was just taking my siesta in the guardroom when you knocked. We do not usually have visitors in the middle of hot summer mornings. I thought there was an emergency, and I came running before I had a chance to dress properly. I didn’t even take the time to pull on my boots. Please come in.” He stepped aside and let the old friar lead his donkey into a small courtyard from which a number of passageways radiated outward. There was a water trough to the right of the gateway. The old friar led his donkey to it and watched as the donkey slaked its thirst. “What do you need, good father?” asked the corporal. “How can I be of service to you on this fine morning?” The old friar remained motionless and said nothing. “Good father, why don’t you speak?” asked the cor-

His office is just down this last passageway on the left.” The moment or two became a quarter-hour, but the old friar waited patiently. Presently, the corporal returned followed by an officer in a well-cut uniform. “Welcome, good father,” said the officer as he extended his hand. The old friar studied the officer’s hand briefly, then he thrust out his “IT IS AS I TOLD YOU, SIR. own clawlike hand, grabbed the officer’s THE OLD FELLOW HAS hand with the tips NOT SPOKEN A WORD of his fingers and dropped it immediSINCE HE GOT HERE.” ately. “My name is Captain Carlos Parran. Chocolate and Cheese Treats Mmmm, the sweetness of chocolate combined with the smoothness of cream cheese never disappoints. Here are two recipes with the same ingredients that yield two completely different results. Additionally, enrich your yom tov by adding a cool and fruity soup course that will elevate your dairy meal with its beauty, freshness and summery appeal.

MELTING CHOCOLATE Melting chocolate is a delicate process. There is one key factor to keep in mind, and that is to ensure that the chocolate never gets too hot. Stir chocolate frequently when melting to quicken the process and ensure the chocolate doesn’t overheat. Don’t wait until it’s all melted to remove from heat, because that will leave you with burned chocolate. Rather, halfway through melting the chocolate, remove it from the heat and mix it vigorously. The heat will melt the remaining chocolate.

The

Holiest of Handiwork A Sefer Torah is the holiest of objects, something whose existence transcends this world, yet it is a string of yirei Shamayim and craftsmen who are charged with bringing it all together. Read on to see how halacha, craft and skill come together to create each treasured scroll. BY: RIKI GOLDSTEIN

THE KLAF An interview with Reb Rachamim Dana

I

t all begins with a pristine klaf, or parchment, made with great exactitude from the hide of a kosher animal. The most mehudar type of skin used is klaf shalil, which is the hide of an unborn baby animal (whose mother was shechted) that has never encountered the impurity of this world at all. I’ve been making klaf shalil for 39 years, since I learned the process from an older man when I was a teenager in Argentina. This veteran klaf-maker taught me the basics, and I went on to learn the many detailed halachos myself. The shalil skins I use are bought from slaughterhouses right here in New York. I have them delivered untreated but frozen, which is halachically more ideal than salting or other treatments of preservation. Processing each batch of skins takes about two weeks. First, they are soaked in huge baths of water to defrost. Then the skins go into a lime solution for several days to soften them so the hair on the top and the fat clinging to the underside can be removed. Using a special knife, I strip the bits of flesh off the skin, thinning and smoothing it until it is smooth and clear. Since the klaf shalil comes from a small animal, all parts of it are used. Once everything is clean, I cut it into large pieces for Sifrei Torah and smaller ones for tefillin and mezuzos. Then I mark the lines for the sofer to write on. The klaf for a Sefer Torah has to be made with the fully expressed intention at every stage, “L’shem kedushas Sefer Torah.” As I clean and thin the

animal skins, I say a L’Shem Yichud, expressing my intention to use them for a Sefer Torah. Once klaf is designated for this holiest purpose, it cannot be used for any other, including tefillin or mezuzos. To avoid problems, I usually add an oral tenai (condition) that the klaf can be used for Sifrei Torah, tefillin or mezuzos. I also mark each piece of parchment that has been designated for something specific. Since I have certification from the Hisachdus Harabbanim that my parchments are completely mehudar, manufactured with all the stringencies, occasionally a mashgiach comes to check the operations. My klaf is bought by sofrim mainly in New York and Canada, but sometimes it makes the journey to Eretz Yisroel. I have had many special Yidden buy their parchment from me, including the Satmar Rebbe, who visited and purchased a klaf for his own Sefer Torah. We see that whatever a Yid says as he produces the Sefer Torah is binding. Once he designates a piece of parchment for a Sefer Torah, tefillin or mezuzah, the parchment cannot be used for anything else. What a lesson in the importance of the words that come out of our mouths... 242

THE SOFER AND THE KSAV An interview with Reb Yehuda Leib Eidelstein

I

am a sofer Sta”m with decades of experience, but today I work mainly as an agent, helping clients order Sifrei Torah from qualified and reliable sofrim. Of course, there are expert sofrim writing Sifrei Torah in New York, but many people prefer the writing to be done in Eretz Yisroel. There they can find serious sofrim of a high caliber who are bnei Torah, and at the same time, the cost is generally less than in the United States. Most of these sofrim focus on writing Sifrei Torah only, as a specialty. Each Sefer Torah should be written by one scribe only, so the sofer has to be free to take on a project that takes eight months to a year to complete. He has to commit to writing a certain amount each day, obviously besides Shabbos, yom tov, and chol hamoed, and with Friday being a half day. Often a client wants the sefer to be ready for a certain yahrtzeit or anniversary, so there is a clear deadline. A year ago, for example, a family wanted a Sefer Torah ready for their grandmother’s 100th birthday, and the sofer had to write an amud each day to finish it on schedule. I buy klaf shalil, which is more mehudar and also softer and easier for the sofer to write on. Next I need ink. The ink

for a Sefer Torah is made through a special process according to halacha, so I buy it with a hechsher so I know that it has been produced correctly. Most often, a client will order a Sefer Torah, and the sofer then begins to write it, but sometimes it goes the other way around: We write a Sefer Torah and have it ready for a customer who wants to buy a finished one. The sofer cuts his feather quill to size using a special surgical knife, which is very sharp. Recently there has been a huge change in the world of safrus with the introduction of a ceramic pen, which can be used for an entire sefer Torah with no sharpening required. The rabbanim are happy with this innovation, which also adds beauty and uniformity to the writing, as it stays perfectly sharp throughout. Many people wonder why it takes a minimum of eight months to write an Ashkenazi Sefer Torah while a Sefardi sofer can produce a Sefer Torah in three months. The answer is that the Sefardim use a rounded form of writing, where each letter is written in just two or three movements, whereas the Ashkenazi script requires a sofer to make six to ten strokes per letter. Once written, I send the pieces of parchment on to someone who specializes in sewing them together into a scroll, using gidim from a kosher animal. Then it is ready for mugah — to be checked by an expert for missing or added letters. Nowadays, there’s also a round of checking done by computer. This is necessary because a sofer can often get confused when it comes to words that are spelled differently in different places — sometimes with one vav, for instance, sometimes with two, and sometimes with none — and the Sefer Torah has to be copied with 100% perfect accuracy. Almost inevitably, the computer check will pick something up, even after a person has been through the entire scroll. Once we are sure that the Sefer Torah is as perfect as human effort and technological innovation can make it, we hand over the treasure to the customer. Reb Yehuda Leib Eidelstein can be reached at 929-250-4363.

THE ATZEI CHAIM AND SILVER ORNAMENTS An interview with Reb Meir Hershkowitz

I

’m the third generation of my family who is in the business of creating atzei chaim. While we don’t leave any marks or logos on the pieces we create, I can immediately recognize Hershkowitz atzei chaim, whether they were designed by my grandfather, my uncles, my father, or my cousins who oversee the production in Eretz Yisroel today. Atzei chaim are composed of upper and lower plates, upper and lower handles, and the interconnecting poles to which the parchment is sewn. Plates and handles can be made of wood or silver, depending on the budget. Our atzei chaim are made of wood, silver or a combination of both. Recently, we also began to offer gold-plated designs. While our main business is the manufacturing of atzei chaim, we also display and sell a full line of mantels, crowns, and other silver ornaments to complete the set. In addition, we do some repairs. I love it when customers bring in old sets of atzei chaim that were created before World War II. The workmanship and history are so special, especially when you take into account that it was all handcarved, without any of the machinery we have today. When I’m charged with such a repair, I try to complete the job while retaining their unique character. When we work, all tashmishei kedusha are treated as sheimos, particularly if they are accessories for a Sefer Torah,

and even when broken. This means that when repairing atzei chaim, we have to carefully sweep up all the sawdust and pieces to be buried, not put in the trash. Hershkowitz atzei chaim have a reputation for durability. In fact, the atzei chaim crafted by my grandfather are still in use, with just minor repairs done over the years. Our experience has shown us what will last for many years down the line, though that limits our design flexibility — we will not create a piece that we feel will not stand strong against wear and tear for a lifetime. Since older Sifrei Torah are heavier than Sifrei Torah written today, their wooden dowels occasionally get worn down. Nowadays we use fiberglass or steel dowels, which just don’t break. We also don’t deal with silver plated material, only sterling silver, and we don’t use a touch-up tool to add thin gold plating, because those rub off with use. Proper gold plating is an option when used on pieces that are separate elements and can be properly secured. We have a website where customers can view all of our designs and combinations, but many clients choose to come down to our store in Lakewood in person. After all, for most people, this is their chance to get personally involved in the production of a Sefer Torah and put some of their own taste and personality into it. I try to accommodate customers’ unique ideas as much as possible without compromising on strength. I deal with wholesalers, sofrim and buyers on a daily basis, but although I do keep a stock of popular combinations, all the production happens in the factory in Eretz Yisroel. We have shuls placing orders, businessmen who want to travel with their Sefer Torah and ensure that it fits inside a carry-on, and customers who order atzei chaim for an entire set of Neviim to match their Sefer Torah. I once had a very special repair request from a Kohen, who had a silver atzei chaim set created by a silversmith using all the silver coins he had received at pidyonei haben over the years. The coins were melted and then formed into a pair of atzei chaim, and now it needed our help in making this hold together. Some years ago, my uncle was given a set of atzei chaim to repair. Clearly a vintage set from prewar Europe, they were beautifully designed in wood and silver, but falling apart. My uncle did an expert repair job, using whichever parts were still usable. He then made identical copies of the parts that could not be salvaged and assembled the refurbished atzei chaim — a repair job totalling around $3,000. Afterward, he was told that these had belonged to Rav Yisroel of Ruzhin and were in the ownership of his descendant the Kopycznitzer Rebbe. In this kind of job, we can barely conceive the kedushah of what we hold in our hands. 248

MANTEL AND PAROCHES An interview with Mrs. Chana Gamliel

C

reating a beautiful, custom paroches or mantel starts by doing a lot of listening. I interview the client to gain an understanding of the unique personality of the shul and the community, the age group, their ideals and what makes the community tick. If the Sefer Torah is dedicated to the memory of a loved one, we speak about who the person was and what they stood for. This is one of my favorite parts of the process and helps me create a paroches and mantel perfectly in tune with the shul’s essence. Sometimes the kehillah has a strong vision of what they want. For example, the Biala Rebbe in London wanted his shul to have a paroches honoring the ten generations of rebbes who preceded him. Creating this was a very emotional project, and it ended up attracting many visitors to the shul. I believe I am one of the few designers who embroider the top of the mantel as well as the sides. Sometimes I collaborate with a photogra-

A Tale of a Sefer Torah During COVID, I had many clients who opened home minyanim and needed a mantel or paroches for their personal Sifrei Torah. After I made a simple mantel for one small Sefer Torah, I heard its fascinating story. The Sefer Torah had been written in Southern Bohemia, which was then part of Czechoslovakia. An expert sofer who recently analyzed the style of the ksav and the spacing between the words surmised it was around 250 years old and had been brought over to the New World by one of the first Jews to settle in America before the colonies declared their independence from Britain. The immigrant Jewish family settled in Virginia at some stage, but sadly, they did not remain Jewish. The generations intermarried and assimilated, and the scroll was left to gather dust — an ancient, apparently irrelevant heirloom that no one could read or understand. At some point, a non-Jewish farming family in Virginia was clearing their farmhouse attic and came across the long, rolled up scroll with foreign lettering. They realized it was Hebrew, and were aware they had some Jewish ancestry, so they brought the discovery to a rabbi, who authenticated the sefer Torah and had its origins investigated. This tiny sefer Torah — the klaf is just about 9 inches high, instead of today’s average 19 inches — was acquired by a collector in Eretz Yisroel, then by its current owners some 50 years ago.

Motifs With Meaning My discerning customers often choose to have pomegranates embroidered on their mantel. They symbolize the Jew who is full of mitzvos. Above all, though, the tree, the eitz chaim, reigns supreme in terms of paroches symbolism. Many communities want to use it to represent the Torah as a tree of life for anyone who holds on to it, or as a tree offering shelter, and yet others want a tree to symbolize their connection to their roots in previous generations.

pher so we can embroider a background such as the Kosel or the walls of Yerushalayim. One shul chose to have different phrases from Shemoneh Esrei represented on the mantelech, and also asked for the design to be continued on the glass panels lining the aron kodesh, which was stunningly effective. For a complex project, it can take my client and I six months to develop the design concepts, but what takes longest is when there is a large committee making decisions. The more people on the committee, the longer the project takes. Since my clients are abroad, we usually meet via Zoom or by phone. When the design is finalized, we often create a white version of the same for the Sefer Torah to “wear” on the Yamim Nora’im. In addition to the mantelech, I can embroider coordinating covers for the amud, bimah, and paroches, giving the shul a unified design. Sometimes I am asked for the design to reflect other elements in the shul, like the seating or windows or ner tamid. In the past few years, ribbons, fringes, and borders have generally gone out of style, with clients choosing a cleaner look. Chassidishe clients, who tend to like more ornate designs, used to request big, heavy fringes, so in the past I would collaborate with a top passementerie who supplies fringes for hotels and stately homes — but that doesn’t happen often anymore. I have found that tastes vary not by location but by religious orientation. The Modern Orthodox gravitate toward certain designs, and heimishe communities to others. Chassidim used to go for very heavy designs, though today they also ask for cleaner, more streamlined ideas. They often ask me for sparkles, so I use Swarovski crystals, and even rice-shaped or teardrop “diamonds” of all colors to create a rich, ornate effect. To be honest, I don’t like doing the same thing twice. I often go to the fabric store to look for new brocades, velvets, linens, mattes, suedes and leathers. I love new color schemes and patterns to create beautiful, attractive covers for the timeless kedusha that’s contained within each piece. 252

BY: RUCHY REESE

Belief in man’s ability to receive messages from Hashem is a foundation of Yiddishkeit. It is so fundamental, in fact, that without belief in prophecy it is impossible to believe in the Torah at all. But what exactly is nevuah? Who can receive it? What is the experience like? How do we know if someone is truly a navi?

THE AGE OF NEVUAH There have been more than a million neviim throughout the ages, both male and female, though the memory of many have been lost to history. Some neviim received only personal prophecies or prophesies that were specific to their time, and though their nevuah was holy and pure, it was not recorded for posterity. Of the myriads of prophecies, only the ones that were given as an eternal message for Klal Yisroel were sealed in the 24 books of the Tanach by the Anshei Knesses Hagedolah, with every word containing applicable messages for our lives, even today. For a thousand-year span beginning from Matan Torah and lasting until the passing of Malachi, who was the last of the neviim, consulting a navi before any major decision in life was par for the course for the average Yid.

IN

fact, people sought the counsel of a navi (also called a seer) for even mundane matters, such as when Shaul’s father lost his donkeys and Shaul approached Shmuel Hanavi to seek guidance through nevuah: And Shmuel answered Shaul, and said, “I am the seer, and you shall eat with me today, and I shall send you away in the morning, and all that is on your mind, I shall tell you. And concerning the donkeys that are lost to you, (and you have sought them as of) today, three days, do not take them to heart, for they have been found… –Shmuel 1 9:19–20

Consulting with a navi was no small matter, for there is a mitzvah d’Oraisa to heed a navi’s words; after all, a navi is Hashem’s mouthpiece, through which the the Will of Hashem is funneled. One who asked a shailah of a navi had to be ready to accept the navi’s word as final, for to ignore the instruction of a navi is a grave sin, indeed: I will set up a prophet for them from among their brothers like you, and I will put My Words into his mouth, and he will speak to them all that I command him. And it will be, that whoever does not hearken to My Words that he speaks in My Name, I will exact [it] of him. –Devarim 18:18–19

Of course, one must know that the navi truly receives nevuah from Hashem, but once he has been confirmed to be a real navi, there may be no room for doubt, as the Rambam writes: Once a prophet has made known his prophecy, and his words have proven true time after time, or another prophet has proclaimed him a prophet, if he continues in the path of prophecy, it is forbidden to doubt him or to question the truth of his prophecy. –Yesodei HaTorah 10:5, Mishneh Torah

Because Hashem requires us to implicitly trust a navi, we must be able to distinguish between one who speaks the Word of Hashem and one who is but a mere charlatan. Thankfully, the Torah has provided us with the tools to distinguish between the two. Before we get into the details, however, we must ask the vital question: What exactly is nevuah?

THE EXPERIENCE Nevuah is the ultimate “out-of-body experience.” Aside from Moshe Rabbeinu, who spoke to Hashem “mouth to mouth” while he was awake, all neviim fell into a “sleep” in which they “saw” a vision. At the moment nevuah descended upon a navi, he experienced a loss of control over his body, allowing his mind to separate from the physical world and become completely immersed in the vision he received: They receive prophetic visions only in a visionary dream or during the day after slumber has overtaken them, as [Bamidbar 12:6] states: “I make Myself known to him in a vision. I speak to him in a dream.”

BECAUSE HASHEM REQUIRES US TO IMPLICITLY TRUST A NAVI, WE MUST BE ABLE TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN ONE WHO SPEAKS THE WORD OF HASHEM AND ONE WHO IS BUT A MERE CHARLATAN.

When any of them prophesy, their limbs tremble, their physical powers become weak, they lose control of their senses, and thus, their minds are free to comprehend what they see, as Bereshis [15:12] states concerning Avraham: “and a great, dark dread fell over him.” Similarly, Daniel [10:8] states: “My appearance was horribly changed and I retained no strength.” –Yesodei HaTorah, 7:2, Mishneh Torah

A TRUE NAVI IS ONE WHO IS NEVER CAUGHT UP IN THE VANITIES OF THIS WORLD, AND IS ONE WHO DIRECTS HIS THOUGHTS CONSTANTLY UPWARD.

When a navi awakened, the meaning of the vision he experienced through metaphoric imagery was perfectly clear to him, and he used his own words and unique style to give over the meaning to whomever was supposed to hear it. Because of this, the Gemara (Sanhedrin 89a) informs us that no two neviim will ever use the same exact words to relate a nevuah; if they do, they are clearly exposed as being false neviim, such as the 400 false prophets by whom King Achav was misled (see Melachim 1 22:6). In relating their visions, some neviim described both the imagery and its interpretation, while others related only the interpretation. Though the message was directly from Hashem, it was absorbed and transmitted through the faculties of man. Only Moshe Rabbeinu’s nevuah was on a different level, making him the “av l’neviim — the father of the prophets.” The Zohar tells us that “the Shechinah spoke from Moshe’s throat.”

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A TRUE NAVI? The Rambam writes that “nevuah is bestowed only upon a very wise sage of a strong character who is never overcome by his natural inclinations in any regard… He must possess a very broad and accurate mental capacity.” A true navi is one who is never caught up in the vanities of This World, and is one who directs his thoughts constantly Upward, attempting to comprehend the mysteries of Hashem. Though many throughout history worked on their characters 264

and aspired to nevuah, not all were zoche to prophesize. Even among the many neviim, some only received nevuah a single time, and it was only Moshe Rabbeinu who was able to prophesize at will. Nevertheless, many righteous men and women trained themselves to become fit for nevuah to rest upon them. Prophecy therefore requires a course of apprenticeship, just as in the case of other disciplines and craft, where one must advance step by step until he masters them thoroughly. This explains what the Torah means when it speaks of the “bnei neviim.” –Ramchal, Derech Hashem 4:2

The Ramchal writes that the bnei neviim trained through “a number of specific disciplines.” They worked to nullify the physical effects of the world upon themselves, thereby allowing them to attach to Hashem’s Supreme Wisdom — for that is what nevuah is: utter attachment to Hashem. Through virtue of this attachment to the Divine, one was able to gain clarity in the most obscure matters, and became a new person of lofty level: When the spirit rests upon him, his soul becomes intermingled with the angels called ishim, and he will be transformed into a different person and will understand with a knowledge different from what it was previously. He will rise above the level of other wise men, as [the navi, Shmuel] told Shaul [Shmuel 1 10:6]: “[The spirit of Hashem will descend upon you], and you shall prophesy with them. And you will be transformed into a different person.” –Yesodei HaTorah 7:1, Mishneh Torah

The bnei neviim continually worked on achieving this intense level of deveikus, and even as the beginnings of nevuah began to descend upon an individual, they were careful to follow the guidance of their prophetic masters to ensure they wouldn’t err, for the in the early stages of growth, it would be possible for them to receive visions from impure forces. Once they became an official navi, however, their nevuah was fully trusted:

“Errors are possible, however, only before one attains full prophecy… It is impossible for a true prophet to have any doubts whatsoever…” –Ramchal, Derech Hashem 4:11

WEEDING OUT A NAVI SHEKER When one learns Tanach they are met with the striking fact that there were many false neviim who led people astray. One example is during the days of Yirmiyahu; while he cried out about the upcoming exile, the “navi” Chananya ben Azur insisted in the name of Hashem that the Babylonians would soon fall. The people found themselves torn, clinging to ben Azur’s message of hope while knowing that Yirmiyahu had long been proven a true navi. Time and time again these false prophets arose, confusing the masses, serving the express purpose of testing us to see if we would remain faithful to the Torah: …You shall not heed the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of a dream; for Hashem Elokecha is testing you, to know whether you really love Hashem Elokecha, with all your heart and with all your soul. –Devarim 13:4

Before the message of the navi can even be evaluated, his character must first be evaluated. If he is not a lofty individual of wise character, surely he cannot be a navi. More specifically, the Torah gives us extremely clear guidelines for how to evaluate whether one is a true navi or a navi sheker: But the prophet who intentionally speaks a word in My Name, which I did not command him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die. Now if you say to yourself, “How will we know the word that Hashem did not speak?” If the prophet speaks in the Name Hashem, and the thing does not occur and does not come about, that is the thing Hashem did not speak. The prophet has spoken it wantonly; you shall not be afraid of him. –Devarim 18:20–22 If there will arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of a dream, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder of which he spoke to you happens, [and he] says, “Let us go after other gods which you have not known, and let us worship them,” you shall not heed the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of a dream; for Hashem Elokecha is testing you, to know whether you really love Hashem Elokecha, with all your heart and with all your soul. –Devarim 13:2–4 We learn very specific halachos from these pesukim:

Every minute detail of a positive nevuah must come to pass: If a navi claims that something good will happen, and even a solitary detail of his nevuah does not come to completion, he is a navi sheker. A negative nevuah, however — one that portends tza’ar — can be rescinded through the power of the teshuvah. Yonah’s nevuah regarding the de266

TIME AND TIME AGAIN THESE FALSE PROPHETS AROSE, CONFUSING THE MASSES, SERVING THE EXPRESS PURPOSE OF TESTING US TO SEE IF WE WOULD REMAIN FAITHFUL TO THE TORAH.

struction of Nineveh is a prime example of this; through teshuvah the evil decree was overturned.

Miracles, signs and wonders are not what make a true navi: In Yesodei HaTorah, the Rambam writes that we don’t even believe in Moshe Rabbeinu’s nevuah on the basis of the miracles he did, and that “Whenever anyone’s belief is based on wonders, his heart has shortcomings, because it is possible to perform a wonder through magic or sorcery.”

FOR THREE DAYS THE SAGES FASTED, UPON WHICH A NOTE FELL FROM SHAMAYIM BEARING THE WORD “EMES.”

Even if a positive nevuah occurs, a true navi will never introduce a new god or speak in the name of any other than that of Hashem; neither will he abolish the mitzvos or introduce a new religion:

Should one arise who appears to be of sterling character and is “a man of miracles,” accurately predicting future events but tells us to worship in a name other than that of Hashem, he is clearly a navi sheker. He may also not add or withdraw any mitzvah from the Torah, claim that the Torah is no longer binding, nor teach the Torah in a way that is contrary to mesorah. One who has already in the past proven himself a navi may, for a limited period of time, however, suspend specific mitzvos, such as when Eliyahu Hanavi made an altar on Har HaCarmel despite the prohibition against bamos.

THE END OF AN ERA Nevuah is the highest level a human being can achieve in connecting with Hashem, and the ability to consult neviim was a tremendous spiritual benefit for mankind. The Yidden thirsted for words of nevuah and yearned to follow the neviim. Because of this intense drive to connect with the Divine, Hashem needed to provide the world with a counterpart in tumah in order for 268

The Monsey View

free will to exist, enabling Yidden to actively choose Hashem over idols. To level the playing field, there was a tremendous hunger in the world for avodah zarah up until the beginning of the era of the Second Beis Hamikdash. This allowed man the choice of pursuing spiritual satisfaction through the worship of idols instead of worshiping the Creator of the world. When the Yidden returned to Eretz HaKodesh after Galus Bavel and began to rebuild the Beis Hamikdash, the chachamim of the community (some of whom were members of the Anshei Knesses Hagedolah) cried out to Hashem, begging Him to remove the yearning to bow to nothingness. They cried out:

“Woe! Woe! This [idolatrous inclination] is the one that destroyed the Beis Hamikdash, burned the Sanctuary, killed all the righteous men, and exiled the Yidden from their land; yet it still dances among us. Did You give any reason besides receiving reward [for overcoming it]? We do not want it and we do not want its reward!” –Yoma 69b

For three days the Sages fasted, upon which a note fell from Shamayim bearing the word “emes.” Hashem accepted their request and slaked the thirst for avodah zara. Since that time, the desire to worship idols has largely ceased to exist. Despite this wonderful development, the Yidden suffered a tragedy: the loss of nevuah, for to ensure the absolute freedom of choice, nevuah was taken from the wisest of men and given “to fools and children.” One day, however, there will arise a king from the line of Dovid Hamelech who “will be a greater master of wisdom than Shlomo, and a great navi, close to the level of Moshe Rabbeinu” (Hilchos Teshuva 9:2, Mishneh Torah). Once again, we will live with the exalted experience of having a navi to guide us, may Hashem send him — Moshiach Tzidkeinu — soon.

If you ask a city-born-and-bred child where flowers come from, they may not be sure whether they grow in buckets or wrapped in cellophane. Even adults might have a hard time picturing the stems in the bouquets being painstakingly grown from the ground, in large fields of colorful blooms. But as every flower farmer knows, it’s a long haul to take a flower from seed to market. Join me as we explore the journeys of your favorite bouquet flowers.

Ornamental Butterfly Orchids (Psychopsis papilio)

That orchid stem in your bouquet adds a stunning effect to the entire arrangement. Looking at it, you’d never know that it may have taken as long as four years for this beautiful orchid to mature from seed to flower and make its way to your hand. Orchids start out as a seed that’s so tiny you can hardly see it. Put together 500,000 orchid seeds, and they still won’t weigh as much as an aspirin tablet. But this microscopic creation contains all the blueprints it needs for growing into a majestic orchid plant. To get the process started, orchid growers usually plant 274

the seed in vitro; the seeds are placed in a jelly-like substance called agar, which contains all the nutrients and growth hormones needed for the orchid to germinate. This is usually done in the controlled environment of a laboratory, as the conditions need to be just right for germination to take place. From germination until the orchid is a unique plant with leaves can take up to two years. Now the orchid can graduate to a greenhouse. Because orchids are tropical plants that grow in Central and South America, they need warm, humid conditions to thrive. When orchids are grown in Europe or Asia for sale as bou-

quet flowers, they usually need a greenhouse so they can thrive in a familiar climate. The orchid plant is carefully transferred from the laboratory to the temperature-controlled greenhouse, where the plant can continue receiving the care it needs, including precise humidity levels and light. After about a year of living in the greenhouse, it’s time for the orchid to bloom! Until it flowers, the orchid plant consists of only roots and leaves. To coax the plant into producing flowers, the gardeners move the orchid plant to a cooler part of the greenhouse. In this new climate, the blooms can emerge. It takes several

months for the flower to fully appear, first growing as spikes and then finally becoming an orchid bloom. Now that it’s all pretty, the orchid is ready to be sold. It might be tested for quality and spend a couple more weeks in a waiting area before it’s wrapped in paper and placed in special boxes for transportation to retailers and florists. After all those years of effort, it’s a special moment when the orchid stem joins a flower arrangement or is presented on its own. It’s easy to see the devoted attention the orchid received in the splendor of its spreading flowers. Enjoy your orchid! June 1, 2022

Roses Are Red (Rosaceae)

This most popular flower to be used in bouquets comes in nearly all the colors of the rainbow, including red, orange, yellow, purple and white. Even bicolor, or two-tone, roses are available. (The only color that is conspicuously absent? Blue roses do not exist naturally, and they’ve also proven difficult for man to create. Florists use dye to create blue roses.) Most of the roses that make their way to American flower markets are grown in South American countries like Ecuador. There, the flower-growing season is yearlong, allowing farms to have a constant supply of flowers to meet demand. Rose farmers can choose to start new rose bushes from seed or from cuttings, depending on the variety of roses being grown. Growing roses from seeds is a long process. It takes approximately three years from the beginning of germination until the actual appearance of that first bloom. Not all roses make it to market. Each individual rose on the farm will be examined for correct stem length and bud opening before it’s hand-cut for harvest. As soon as a rose is cut from the bush, it requires careful attention to ensure it stays fresh and hydrated. Seconds after being cut, the rose stem is inserted into a citric acid solution that kills bacteria and helps the rose survive at full freshness until it reaches water. Farm workers usually bundle together 25 roses and hydrate them for up to 24 hours in water. Then the roses are placed in cold rooms so they become dormant. Now they’re ready for transport. At every step in the journey, the roses are refrigerated. This includes being packed into boxes and sent to special cold rooms before being loaded onto flower cargo planes. The arriving flower boxes land in dedicated terminals kept at a constant low temperature with massive coolers specifically set aside for flower handling. Imports to the United States also must go through U.S. Customs, and so every rose box goes through an X-ray machine before being allowed into the country. Some boxes are also opened and manually inspected. Now the roses can make their way to individual flower shops to be sold to delighted customers. Each rose stem is cut again so that it can hydrate properly, then sold as quickly as possible to give its new owner the maximum vase life of six to ten days.

Cut Flower Care If you want your vase of flowers to stay pretty and alert, try these nowilt tricks from the experts: 1. Make sure to use a sparkling clean vase (clean it as if you’d drink from it). 2. Fill your vase with lukewarm water until it’s approximately two-thirds full. 3. Recut the stems at an angle so they can drink up the water easily. 4. Add sugar to the water in the vase. 5. Remove any leaves or blossoms that are below the water line so they don’t rot. 6. Change the water every two to three days.

Carnation Charm (Dianthus caryophyllus)

Carnations may not have the stand-alone quality of the orchid nor the meaningful beauty of the rose, but they are great for adding to bouquets because of their ruffles, which give a lot of bulk to an arrangement. Oh, and they’re also pretty! Because carnations are relatively easy to grow, they’re inexpensive — and that gives them a less classy reputation than roses, for example. But carnations also have a journey until they’re ready to join the others in a vase. Carnations are typically grown from cuttings as opposed to seeds. Once the cutting is planted, it takes a few months for it to bloom. Usually, carnation cultivation is done in protective greenhouses. These plants require a lot of sunlight, which is why they usually flower best in the summer. One major part of the carnation-growing process is setting up stakes to support the growing stems. Because carnation shoots have a tendency to bend over, and a 280

bent flower has no market value, carnation growers set up a mesh wire system to hold the plants upright. The tender carnation plants also require pinching (have you ever seen a gardener pinch the leaves of a flower? It may have been a carnation) and disbudding, which removes side buds from the flower stem. These practices ensure a beautiful end-result flower. Every carnation picked from the greenhouse is given a grade based on stem length, thickness and quality of the flower. Then the flowers are placed in lukewarm water and packed in polyethylene film for transport. Now your florist can get her carnation delivery — a particularly long-lasting one, with a shelf-life of up to fourteen days. If you’re putting together a rose bouquet, many florists recommend pairing carnations with roses for a perfect combination, although carnations will add floral pop to nearly any bouquet you choose.

Lovely Lilies (Liliaceae)

Lilies are a great flower to grow in your home garden because they’re super-simple to care for and are perennials as well, so you’ll get to enjoy the fruits of your gardening efforts for many years. They look fabulous in bouquets, and if you’re careful about cutting them right, you’ll still have the lily grow again the next season even if you’ve harvested its bloom. To plant lilies, all you need to do is buy bulbs from a plant nursery and bury them in your garden soil. You’ll want to make sure that the garden has good drainage, but otherwise, there’s little you’ll need to do because lilies can grow in the sun and in the shade, with irrigation and without. So sit back, relax, and wait for those lilies to flower in early spring. As soon as you see a bud on your lily plant, you can cut the stem for display in a vase. Just make sure to immediately put it into cool water so it gets its chance to unfurl its petals.

Becoming a Sofer

Qualifications of a Sofer • First and foremost, a sofer must be a yarei Shamayim who will produce only 100% kosher material. • A sofer should also have a beautiful handwriting • He should be a calm, levelhead individual with the patience and focus to sit and write for extended periods of time. • He also needs to be detail-oriented. The reason a sofer must be a yarei Shamayim is that one who is lacking in yiras Shamayim may notice a mistake only after writing a tefillin for days, and then decide to superficially fix it to save his work from going to waste — which halachically does not help the pasul status it has from being written incorrectly. At Ashuris we have an entire staff of handpicked ehrliche sofrim who are yirei Shamayim, among them renowned Sta”m expert Harav Sinai Halberstam, shlit”a, who is on top of the sofrim and their work to ensure that Ashuris only produces the finest in hiddur and quality.

It takes about three to four months of training until a sofer is ready to write his first davar shebekdusha: a megillah. It takes a full year for a sofer to master the entire art of sofrus and qualify as a sofer for all works. To become an expert sofer, one needs an expert teacher. Ashuris has a training program that brings out the best in each Sta”m student. Those under our tutelage are taught to maximize their talent, with an emphasis on the beauty of the letters. There are numerous halachos a sofer must learn and be tested on in order to get a ksav kabbalah: a certificate from a rav who undersigns that the individual is well-versed in the halachos and has the qualifications to write sofrus.

Sacred Hours Time for a Check A mezuzah should be checked twice every seven years (that’s once every three and a half years)

Tefillin is recommended to be checked every five to seven years. A Sefer Torah needs a thorough bedikah before it is used, and it thereafter receives a chezkas kashrus; however if a problem is seen once the Sefer Torah is in use, a thorough bedikah is recommended.

Megillahs usually only get checked via computer to ensure no letters are missing, added or mixed up. Mehadrim, though, give them in for a proper bedikah.

While each sofer works at his own pace, this is the average amount time it takes for an expert sofer to produce these high-standard works:

Mezuzah: 3 to 4 hours Megillah: 3 weeks

Tefillin: 4 to 5 days Sefer Torah: A little over a year

Advance Bookings The Cost of Hiddur Handmade klaf — klaf avodas yad — is more expensive, and while it is not used across the board, Ashuris sofrim use exclusively handmade klaf. We have experts handpicking the finest material for the use in Ashuris products.

We recommend that a pair of tefillin should be ordered about a year before the bar mitzvah. A Sefer Torah should be booked about a year and a half before one would like to make its hachnasah.

Mezuzahs: • A lower end, good-enough mezuzah costs between $110 and $150. • An average mehudar mezuzah costs between $160 and $200. • A very mehudar mezuzah runs at $225 and up. • The most expensive mezuzah we sold cost $500. The price of Sta”m is assessed according to the beauty of the writing.

Pronouncing It Pasul Common pasulim found are: • Missing letters or words • Exchanged letters • Misshaped letters • Cracked letters • Two letters touching each other • Faded ink • Upside-down mezuzahs • Mezuzahs burned from the sun (caused by metal mezuzah cases outside; readers should be aware of this) • Letters peeling off (usually from clear mezuzah cases that are exposed to sunlight)

Etched in Ink The quill used in Sta”m is the feather of a turkey. Ink used in Sta”m is made of three ingredients: • Tree galls: ‫עפצים‬ • Iron sulfate: ‫קנקנתום‬ • Gum arabic: ‫קומא‬

The Writing and the Art There are three types of ksavim: • Ksav Bais Yosef is a script that is in accordance with what the Bais Yosef writes as the tzuros ha’osius. This is the script used by most Ashkenazim. • Ksav Ari is similar to Ksav Bais Yosef, with a few changes according to the Ari Hakadosh. This script is used by most chassidim. • Ksav Vellish is more similar to the ksav used in siddurim and chumashim, and it is used by the bnei Sefard. (Chabad has its own ksav, which was designed by the Baal Hatanya and is a blend of Vellish and Arizal ksavim.)

The height of the smallest Sefer Torah ever written by Ashuris was 10 cm (3.93 inches). June 1, 2022

Discover DCity – Israel’s Design Mall That Has it All Furnishing or renovating? Save time, money and energy with a visit to DCity!

LOVE MAKEUP? Go PRO!

DCity, Israel’s newest and biggest design mall in the Jerusalem area, has 200 stores and showrooms with everything you need to renovate and furnish every room of your home – living room and bedroom sets, kitchens, closets, appliances, fixtures, doors, sanitary items, floor and bath tiles, textiles, and much more. And it’s all in a gorgeous 150,000 sq. meter compound that turns your shopping experience into an enjoyable day away from it all! You’ve never seen anything like it –a mall that has all your furniture and design needs in one great place. Park your car (it’s free) and enjoy strolling through the Italy-inspired, indoor-outdoor mall with its 200 quality stores, until you reach the “Piazza,” where you can choose from an assortment of mehadrin gourmet restaurants. Throughout, there are street musicians, water fountains and performances at various times of day. Penina Revach, DCity’s enthusiastic CEO, was formerly the head sales representative of a large construction and development firm in central Israel. “From my experience, the stage of choosing all the elements of the home, from the floor tiles to the furniture, is an exhausting and extremely time-consuming process,” she said. “And it’s all the more so for foreign residents who try to get everything done in a few days. That’s why we opened DCity – to provide a one-stop solution for all home design needs!” This week marks the grand opening of DCity’s boutique DHotel, featuring 50 luxurious rooms, making it even more convenient for people arriving from abroad and who want to complete all their purchases in the shortest time possible. Something for Everyone The mall’s 200 stores contain every possible home-decorating and furnishing need, from the big-ticket items, such as furnishings, kitchens and appliances, to textiles and hard-to-access hardware. “Instead of schlepping from city to city and from store to store, running through old dusty warehouses, and searching frantically for a parking spot, we’ve concentrated everything in one stunning venue,” says Revach.

Although, originally, the concept had been provide for the residents of Greater Jerusalem, DCity has been attracting the attention of residents from trendy Tel Aviv. Top interior designers and decorators from across the country are flocking here with their clients, who want to benefit from the huge selection, high quality and special prices.

“Don’t be fooled by the luxurious ambience,” Revach says. “Israelis are finally starting to realize that a great shopping experience doesn’t necessarily mean high prices. As Israel’s City of Design, DCity has styles for every taste and prices for every budget. What’s more, the fact that all the stores are concentrated in one place enables big brand names to give great sale prices and discounts.”
