(Inbox, Issue 345) I’m writing in regard to the ongoing discussion about pioneers of new communities. The Baal Shem Tov lived in a time of physical and spiritual decline for the Yidden in Eastern Europe. He and several subsequent rebbeim invested time, money and effort into getting Yidden to leave the overcrowded cities and move to villages where they would have the space and opportunity to support their families. A healthy body is a healthy neshamah, and the Baal Shem Tov recognized that the only way to revitalize Yidden and Yiddishkeit was to give them food to eat and air to breathe. This came before giving shiurim and opening chedarim, etc., which he made sure to do as well. The fact that you, a chassidishe person with high standards and mehudar hechsherim, are here today is a testimony to the success of this method. Yiddishkeit can and does flourish when people’s, yes, gashmius, allows them to thrive. Case in point: As stated in the original article in Issue 344, living in these communities has helped parents focus more on serving Hashem and being mechanech their children. As far as keeping our standards, or chas v’shalom, dropping them, that is a choice that we make wherever we live. There are unfortunately many opportunities for slacking off in kashrus and other areas even in the heart of “thriving Torah centers,” while keeping high standards of kashrus is easier than ever in most parts of the country, especially when living in an organized community. One more point: “Ah chassid macht a sevivah — a chassid creates his environment.” When we come to influence and make a positive impact (like the woman who gave challos to her neighbor), we grow from our W E A T H E R

SAVORY CHEESE CHOICES
Now that Shavuos is upon us, and delectable cheesecakes with which to beautify the Shavuos table can be found all around us, I want to share with your readers the easiest — and in my opinion, tastiest — “cheesecake,” which was a hit at my table last Shavuos. To prepare it, mix a big farmer cheese with the majority of a container of whipped cottage cheese. Slice up pimento olives, and very finely dice red peppers, carrots, purple onions and other vegetables that you like, and add it to the cheese mixture to make a delicious korozott (Hungarian cheese salad). Don a pair of rubber gloves, and form the cheese mixture into a beautiful long log. Next, decorate the tray with loads of vegetables like cucumbers, red tomatoes, lettuce and slices of kohlrabi, as well as crackers. It is so simple to make, and it was the best-going item at our Shavuos kiddush this past year. Of course, everyone enjoyed the sweet desserts, but only after filling up on some wholesome dairy fare. WATER AND WASTE
Lately there have been garbage trucks driving around leaking dirty water. The IWS has advised that these leaks are caused by liquids in the garbage cans. This is causing the environment to be very unpleasant for area residents. I am reaching out to you to be aware of this situation and please avoid putting liquids into your garbage. Also, please keep your outdoor trash cans covered at all times so rainwater does not leak into the garbage bins. Thank you for your cooperation! R.M.
YOUR VOICE THE IMPORTANCE OF CAREFULLY CHECKING LETTUCE
In our home we use Andy Boy romaine lettuce, which is referred to as romaine hearts and is considered cleaner than regular romaine. In the past, I would check each leaf in the ceiling light before use, and since I never found any insects, I began checking some lettuce leaves without even soaking and washing them first. A few days ago, I checked a very fresh piece of lettuce and found nothing, after which my daughter checked the same piece of lettuce again and found a tiny live insect in a lettuce fold. She then checked several other leaves and found two more insects. I was shocked that an insect had been found after the lettuce leaf had been checked and seen to be clean, but there it was, clearly real and although tiny, clearly visible, with threadlike legs extending from the tiny, smaller than a pin, dark green body of the insect. Afterward I read that this spring (2022) there were a greater number of insects THE MONSEY VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS.

present in lettuce. For the benefit of others, I wanted to share this information and publicize how important it is to clean and check lettuce properly, and to have sharp eyesight to be able to do so properly. Following is the OU guide for cleaning and checking (open leaf — including romaine) lettuce: 1. Cut off the lettuce base and separate the leaves from one another. 2. Soak leaves in a solution of cold water and vegetable wash. The proper amount of vegetable wash has been added when some bubbles are observed in the water. (In the absence of vegetable wash, several drops of concentrated unscented liquid detergent may be used. However, for health reasons, care must be taken to thoroughly rinse off the soapy solution.) 3. Agitate lettuce leaves in the soapy solution. 4. Spread each leaf, taking care to expose all of its curls and crevices. Using a heavy stream of water or a power hose, remove all foreign matter and soap from both sides of each leaf. Alternatively, a vegetable brush may be used on both sides of the leaf. 5. Leaves should be checked over a light box or under strong overhead lighting to verify that the washing procedure has been effective. Pay careful attention to the folds and crevices in the leaf where insects have been known to hold tightly through several washings.
Many kashrus agencies recommend using the Thrip Cloth Method, which the Star K explains as follows: 1. Wash produce well. 2. Prepare a basin with water and a nonbleach and nontoxic dishwasher detergent solution. The water should feel slippery. 3. Agitate the produce in the solution for 15 seconds. 4. Remove the produce from the ba-

sin, and shake off excess water over the basin. 5. Pour water through the thrip cloth. 6. Check the thrip cloth over a light box for any insects. 7. If insects are found, repeat steps 1 through 6. This can be done up to three times. If insects are still found on the third try, the produce should not be used.
Notes: •
If one does not have a thrip cloth, the water may be checked for infestation by placing a white basin over a light box. A dense white cloth may also be used instead of a thrip cloth.
•
Some kashrus agencies recommend using a thrip cloth or a dense white cloth over a colander/strainer or between two colanders/strainers. Also, some recommend spraying with a spray bottle of plain water on the cloth to dissipate any soap residue on the cloth.
•
Some people also fill up a vegetable spinner with vegetable wash water and spin out the water from the spinner, instead of taking out the produce from the water. But that water cannot be checked on a thrip cloth. The next water should be poured through a cloth.
•
cRc recommends Seventh Generation Non-Toxic Dish Soap or Kosher Vegetable Wash.
•
The produce should not be soaked too long, so that it does not get a soapy taste.
•
Thrip cloths and light boxes from the Star K company can be ordered from Star K or from Amazon under the name Thrip Cloths and Kosher Vegetable Lightbox (which includes loupe, thrip cloth and guide).
Thank you for publicizing this important information. R.G. 140

PARSHAS BECHUKOSAI For the Fire of Torah
Quoting the Midrash, Rashi famously comments on the words, “Im bechukosai teileichu — If you follow My statutes,” that it is referring to toiling in the study of Torah — “Sheteheyu ameilim baTorah” (Vayikra 26:3). Many have wondered how this conclusion was drawn. How do these words hint at the toil of Torah? THERE WAS LOUD KNOCKING ON THE DOOR. Who could it be at this hour? Reb Dovid Schlesinger wondered as he ran to check. “Who’s there?” he asked. “Kotler! Kotler!” Reb Dovid opened the door. “Kletzker Rosh Yeshivah! What brings you here in the middle of the night?” It was during the time of the Knessiah Gedolah in Vienna, and Rav Aharon Kotler, zt”l, who was then Rosh Yeshivah in Kletzk, was among the rabbanim who had come to participate. “I heard that your brother, Reb Yechiel Michel Schlesinger*, is staying at your home.” “That’s right,” Reb Dovid replied. “He’s already sleeping.” With fire in his eyes, Rav Aharon said, “Wake him up and tell him that I found a teirutz to the kushya that he asked me earlier.” Judging from the urgency Rav Aharon displayed, it seemed like the question was fresh. Surprisingly, it had been asked some eight hours earlier. During all this time, the question burned inside Rav Aharon’s mind, giving him no rest. Now that he had found a satisfying explanation, he could not wait any longer, but ran to update Reb Yechiel Michel in the middle of the night. WHEN THE PONOVEZHER RAV, ZT”L, was ill, he traveled to America for surgery. He stayed for a couple of months until he was well enough to return to Eretz Yisroel. He arrived back in the middle of the night. His talmidim were excited to greet him and gathered outside the yeshivah for a grand kabbalas panim. They sang and danced l’chvod haTorah, despite the late hour. Suddenly, the Rav motioned with his hands for the crowd

to quiet down. The bachurim immediately clustered around the Rav, eager to hear what he would say. They expected warm words of delight at being back or perhaps a caution to go to sleep as it was late. But they quickly realized that they were wrong. “The yeshivah is now in middle of learning this-and-this sugya,” the Rav began, “and there are several difficult kushyos on it…” And, as if it were the most natural thing to do, right then and there, outside the yeshivah building in the middle of the night, the Ponovezher Rav began to deliver a full-blown shiur klali. The moment the Rav came in contact with his beloved talmidim, he was overtaken by the fire of Torah. He couldn’t even wait until the morning or until he was inside the beis midrash to give over his shiur. He didn’t pay attention to his delicate health, now weakened by a long flight, nor was it noticeable that he was coming from a long break in yeshivah life. The sugya burned inside of him, and he was itching to share the spark. His entire being was afire. He lived for Torah. HAGAON REB ELIEZER SILVER, ZT”L, was in critical condition. He was unconscious, and try as the doctors might, nothing could wake him. One family member asked his good friend, Rav Mordechai Gifter, zt”l, to come visit Reb Eliezer in the hospital. Perhaps words of Torah would awaken him. Rav Mordechai knew Reb Eliezer well. He knew what a great gaon and lamdan he was, how passionate he was for the veracity of Torah. He began to speak in learning, but instead of presenting nice divrei Torah, he asked weak questions and provided offbeat explanations. He knew that in the good old days, Reb Eliezer’s blood would boil if he were to hear such svaros.
Nothing could wake Reb Eliezer from his comatose state — nothing but the fire of Torah that boiled within his very blood. Indeed, as he spoke, Rav Mordechai noticed that although Reb Eliezer did not stir, his face took on a new look. He reddened and seemed upset. Rav Mordechai continued to speak. Suddenly, Reb Eliezer let out a shout. “Stop! Enough! You are saying crooked svaros and chiddushim that simply don’t make any sense!” The doctors rushed into the room. “What did you use to wake him?” they wanted to know. Indeed, nothing could wake Reb Eliezer from his comatose state — nothing but the fire of Torah that boiled within his very blood. * * * * * Rav Shalom Schwadron explains that Chazal compare Torah learning to fire, and talmidei chachamim to the flame. (This is only mentioned in regard to Torah learning, and not to any other mitzvah or growth in ruchnius.) Besides its ability to burn anything in its path, fire creates warmth, and that warmth has energy. It doesn’t stay in one place, but keeps moving forward. This is how “Im bechukosai teileichu” hints at toil in Torah. “Teileichu” means moving forward, growing, shteiging. Only through ameilus in Torah can we keep moving upward. While any mitzvah fulfills ratzon Hashem, only true toil in Torah has in it the power and spiritual energy of fire that transforms, purifies and prompts aliyah. The fire of Torah does not allow a person to remain in one place, but demands that he constantly move forward and keep growing all the time. * Later the founder and leader of Yeshivas Kol Torah in Yerushalayim.
Did You Know? Hidden in the words of tochacha are comforting words of bracha. Reb Pinchus Koritzer said that the tochacha contains so much bracha that the Torah didn’t want to reveal them, but concealed it under the cover of tochacha. The Baal Hatanya was the baal korei in his shul every Shabbos and yom tov. One year, he was out of town on Shabbos Bechukosai, and one of the chassidim took his place and leined from the Torah. As he began to read the portion of tochacha, someone realized that the Baal Hatanya’s son Reb Dov Ber, who was a boy at the time, was crying. He later explained that when his father leined, he heard only brachos, but now he’d heard the klalos in their simple meaning, and he could not contain his fear.

Path to the Right Desk She derives joy from helping young adults in our community by being their voice in the workforce, and is on a mission to help every girl get the job she deserves. B Y: YA A K O V G R U N B A U M
Announce you’re a recruiter, and you are likely to be greeted with a snicker (and not of the gooeychocolate variety). Everyone relies on recruiters, employers and employees alike, but for some reason, the very nature of their work and the cajoling tactics involved give them a bad rap. I guess you can say they are literally the shadchanim of the business world. Chavie Kornbluh from Key2Leads wanted to do things differently. Catering to a market that has long been underserved by the what’s-on-your-resume recruiting world, she quickly became the matchmaker most relied upon for arranging the perfect landing spot for anyone looking for a job. With skills that enable them to do well with well-paying secretarial work, these energetic young employees end up giving their businesses a great return on investment while excelling and thriving at what they’re good at. Chavie isn’t shy about her background, and this resonates with everyone of this demographic. With another school year nearing completion, we caught up with Chavie between a phone call and a meeting to hear more about her mission and the impact she hopes to continue having. How does someone with your background end up in the position you’re in as the head of a growing talent acquisition firm?
I’ve always been passionate about helping others, and for many years have been dedicated to helping special-ed children. A couple of years ago, I took the courage to expand my horizons and joined a recruiting firm. After a while, I realized that I have something to bring to the table, something that has been chronically lacking in the field. That’s when I branched out and started my own operation so I can help those who, like me, have the ambition and drive to succeed in the right environment. How is what you do different from standard recruitment?
I’ll answer this with an example: If you are a real estate broker, do you focus on selling that $2 million mansion or dedicate your time to a rental apartment? Most recruiters go for the big fish, those jobs that come with fancy titles, corner offices, and of course, hefty salaries and the commissions that come with them. But most prospective employees begin at the ground level. So while we do place many high-salary positions as well, we are dedicated to our clients’ needs, and thus needed a strategy with which to fill this niche of secretarial positions, where other recruiters don’t like to put their efforts in. And that is where I place a lot of my focus.

But isn’t it difficult to place someone with a company when they have little or no employment history?
It may be, but I know these demographics well, and I know their skill sets. We vet all the candidates based on their passions, where they feel their strengths are, and where they see themselves a few years from now. Each girl has her specific strengths; some are great at bookkeeping, others at graphic design, and we arrange for each one a job they qualify for. And there are so many companies that need people with these exact capabilities. This plays out a lot with fresh graduates and the secretarial positions they can fill. Girls like these are perfect for such opportunities, and companies are always on the lookout for talent like theirs. We launched a special program called Keys2hire to serve just them. Is there enough of a market to make it worth your while?

Of course! Think about this: In today’s world, nearly every adult, male and female alike, needs a job. And each of them has to be paired with their employer by someone. People like to think of companies as entities unto themselves, but a company is nothing besides for the people it comprises! And that goes for every cog in the operation. How have businesses reacted to your shift in focus?
We haven’t gotten away from the C-level and mid-level jobs at all. We’ve filled nearly 70 such positions in the past eighteen months, and our rate keeps on accelerating. Also, businesses have been actively encouraging us to focus on this oft-overlooked part of the industry because they really need these positions filled with quality people. They are highly appreciative. How does your personal history play into what you are doing now?
I remember back in the day, when I fell behind in my typing lessons at school, and my teacher told me that I’ll never have a job other than working a cash register. This has fueled me for years, because I always knew that while I may not excel at computers, I have the drive and tenacity to achieve whatever I put my focus on. Our heimish girls are terrific at “getting things done,” and they deserve a chance to work in the way they shine brightest. From there, their talent takes over, and they can begin rising through the ranks. How do you pair these new potential employees with the right business?
We have a number of recruiters from different heimish schools and backgrounds so that girls from those schools can work with someone who “gets them.” We also offer free coaching, prep lessons and guidance throughout the process to prepare them for 156

the right opportunity. Then each girl gets screened thoroughly to see where her skills lie, and we consult with references as well, if needed. Together, this makes for a success rate that is hard to rival. Can you share an example of the guidance you give?
I recently worked with someone who was certain they had what it takes to be a manager, but had no background to prove it. Others were pushing the individual to take the best-paying managerial position, even if it was in a smaller firm, but my suggestion was to take a lowersalary job in a larger company with far more growth potential. Let them see for themselves! This individual is now a highly paid manager at the company where they work. On a personal level, what has this journey been like?
It’s been incredibly rewarding to think that I’ve had the power, with the help of Hashem, to bring over 70 individuals to better parnassah and positions. It can be frustrating when struggling to fill a job or find a good opportunity for a client, but when we close the deal, it’s not only a professional joy but also a personal one. Chayala Schor (Nagel), a Bais Rochel graduate who is part of our team, experienced frustration in the past when she was getting no response to her emails and resume while looking for her first job. When presented with this opportunity after having been in the workforce for a while, she committed herself to being a voice for the voiceless, and the feedback she hears from the friends for whom she found amazing positions and helped get increases in salary, qualifies, in her words, as “indescribable euphoria.”
What would you want our readers to know?
I want you to know your worth! If you or your daughter is a graduate out of school, there are many businesses who want you for tasks that meet your strengths. That doesn’t mean that she needs to accept any job she gets; a girl needs an agent to vouch for her and lead her to the right one. And our team places an outsized focus on this market, which means we have a vast database of recruits as well as positions waiting to be filled. That said, we’re still servicing all other level positions as well. Where do you see yourself going from here?
If I can’t change the industry, I can still help a whole bunch of people find a job that brings out the best in them. No two people are alike and neither should their journeys be. Rifky Berkowitz (Samuel), a Viznitz graduate who works as Talent Acquisitions in Key2leads, says that she struggled to find a job that suited her until she took it as a sign to help others find theirs. Ultimately, our jobs and our fates are in the hands of Hashem, and we are blessed to be His messengers.

With Monday Deadline Looming on Regulations Threatening All NY Yeshivas, Rabbanim Urge New Yorkers To Take Action With just days remaining until the end of a comment period on New York’s proposed substantial equivalency regulations, rabbanim from every community are urging the entire Jewish community to express their strong opposition by sending letters and/or emails defending their right to choose their children’s educations. The state-mandated comment period on the regulations, which would give local public school districts the authority to dictate yeshivah curriculums, runs through May 30. Prominent rabbanim, askanim and communal organizations are hoping that inundating the New York State Department of Education with comments opposing the regulations will persuade the Board of Regents to follow another course of action when they vote on the guidelines in September. Under the proposed regulations, local school boards would have the right to insist that parents take their children out of noncompliant yeshivos to a different school, with those who refuse facing potential penalties and even jail time. Multiple rabbanim spoke out on the matter in a video produced by Agudath Israel of America, with Rabbi Aharon Feldman, rosh yeshivah at Yeshivas Ner Yisroel in Baltimore, calling it a nationwide threat to yeshivah education. Rabbi Yisroel Reisman, rosh yeshivah at Yeshiva Torah Vodaas, noted that local school boards who have already demonstrated their animosity towards yeshivos would be given the authority to inspect yeshivos and decide if their curricula are up to par. “It is not they who should be the final deciders of the future education of our dear boys and girls,” said Rav Usher Anshel

Weeks of Bare Shelves Predicted as Baby Formula Shortage Continues A baby formula shortage that has left parents scrambling is expected to continue for several more weeks, prompting Jewish communities nationwide to come up with solutions of their own to ensure that its youngest members are properly nourished. Persistent supply chain issues sparked by COVID are only partly to blame for the problem. After four babies who had been fed baby formula produced in an Abbott Nutrition processing facility were found to have contracted bacterial infections, two of which proved fatal, the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched an investigation that found bacteria in the facility. The plant, located in Sturgis, Michigan, was shut down in February and product recalls were issued, and while the bacteria found in the facility was not the same strain that sickened the infants, it remained closed by the FDA for months. With the Sturgis plant manufacturing 43% of the nation’s baby formula supply, shortages started becoming a reality as winter gave way to spring. Stores began instituting purchase limits on baby formula, as previously reported in The Monsey View, but with the FDA not allowing foreign formulas into the United States, the situation continued deteriorating, and the national out-of-stock rate for baby formula hit an astonishing 43% by the end of the first week in May. Jewish communities have been quick to rally to the cause, setting up formula drives and drop-off sites. Baltimore Jewish Life reported that Project Ezra, The Chesed Fund and several community members worked together to acquire regular, specialty and medical formula in order to provide local residents with a month’s supply of formula for their babies. The Boca Raton Synagogue asked its mispallelim to contribute any unneeded formula to its formula gemach. The shul also tasked members with buying any formula they found on store shelves for the gemach and offered to cover the purchase price, if necessary. Tomche Shabbos of Rockland County arranged formula drop-off sites in Airmont, Chestnut Ridge, Forshay, New Hempstead, Pomona, Suffern and Wesley Hills, and urged community members to donate to the cause in order to help their fellow Monseyites who are in desperate need

of specialty formulas. Tomche Shabbos has already begun distributing the formula they received from the drive to those in need. In addition, a generous donor arranged for the delivery of over 50 cases of formula, which were distributed from the Tomche Shabbos warehouse on Monday. There have been some positive developments in the past week, with the FDA finally giving the Abbott Sturgis plant the green light to reopen, a process that is expected to take two weeks, with another six to eight weeks of processing time until new products appear on store shelves. The federal government also agreed to allow formulas from other countries to be imported into the United States, with The Wall Street Journal reporting that President Joe Biden authorized Department of Defense planes to pick up foreign formulas that meet federal safety standards. The shortages have had very real consequences. Fox News reported that two children with specific nutritional needs had to be hospitalized after being switched to an alternate formula because of the shortage. A pediatric gastroenterologist at the hospital where the two have been treated called the shortage “the worst crisis” of his medical career. Switching from one brand of formula to another can cause real problems for some babies and children, noted Monsey activist Shoshana Bernstein. “We are talking about babies who can projectile vomit the wrong formula,” said Bernstein. “I spoke to someone who changed formulas, and her baby didn’t have a wet diaper for over 24 hours.” As the shortage continues, members of the Jewish community have also turned to crowdsourcing, asking friends, family and even strangers to help them find formula for their babies. Groups dedicated to the shortage have been filled with messages with offers of extra formula, news of available stock and requests for specific brands.
Suffern Yeshivah Parents’ Write-In Campaign Sends Strong Message in Latest School Board Election Two last-minute school board candidates supported by the yeshivah community may not have won seats in the latest election, but their presence sent a strong message to the Suffern Central School District that its Orthodox Jewish parents are not shy about making their voices heard. As previously reported in The Monsey View, the school board successfully removed two Jewish candidates from the ballot in the weeks preceding the election, saying that they did not meet residency requirements. Undaunted, Suffern’s yeshivah community mounted an eleventh-hour write-in campaign for two
new candidates, Joanna Klein and Asher Wieder, reported The Journal News. Representatives from the Jewish community were on site at local polling places, distributing cards endorsing the write-in candidates and no-votes on the proposed school budget. While both Klein and Wieder each received 1,523 votes, far less than the more than 5,000 votes received by the incumbent school board members, some members of the Suffern public school community expressed concern over the increasing Jewish presence and its impact on the district. Yeshivah parent Andrea Jaffe, who grew up in the district and now lives there, was present as the ballots were counted at the district’s administration building. She noted that yeshivah parents are taxpayers who contribute to the district’s budget and deserve timely busing and state-mandated special services. “All we’re looking for is some representation,” said Jaffe. The district’s failure to address the concerns of its Orthodox residents is an ongoing problem and one that isn’t going to go away, observed Jaffe. “The more they poke the bear, the bear is going to rise,” said Jaffe.
Felder Bill Aims To Mandate DMV Inspection Reminder Notices A bill that could potentially save New Yorkers from having to pay costly fines cleared the Senate this week and is making its way to the Assembly for its approval. Senate Bill 3687-A would require the Department of Motor Vehicles to send reminder notices to vehicle owners, reminding them that their vehicle is due to be inspected within the next 30 days. It would also provide a five-day grace period beyond the inspection certificate’s expiration date during which motorists could not be ticketed for having a past-due sticker. The bill was introduced by Senator Simcha Felder, who noted that, all too often, people simply forget that they need to have their cars inspected. “The first time they realize their vehicle inspection has expired is when they return to find a hefty ticket on their parked car,” said Felder. “In today’s busy world, we can all use a little help remembering, and this bill would simply require the State to help remind New Yorkers to get their vehicles inspected.” Felder noted that New Yorkers are over-taxed, over-ticketed and over-fined. “By just giving drivers a fair warning, with a pinch of grace, we can help them get their vehicles inspected, without always reaching into their wallet first,” added Felder. A similar bill introduced by Felder last year passed the Senate but was never heard in the Assembly.

A COMMUNITY OF CHESED
ROCKLAND CHESED NETWORK BRIDGES MONSEY’S PAST AND FUTURE Rockland County has always been focused on chesed, even before Tomche Shabbos began delivering 20 food boxes in 1988. And its giving has grown along with the community. Not only does Tomche Shabbos now deliver 500 boxes a week, but they’ve since branched out into job placement, helping with utility bills, mental health support and more. This expansion led to the creation of Rockland Chesed Network, an umbrella organization that includes Tomche Shabbos and the many other divisions that make up the chesed conglomerate it has become.
A CHESED ORGANIZATION IS BORN Can anyone remember a Monsey without Tomche Shabbos? Mr. Alan Rosenstock can. In 1988, he was commuting from Manhattan when someone from his carpool asked if his wife would join a rotation to cook supper for a local family with no means. Monsey had many incredible baalei chesed at the time but no formal organization to help the needy. So a group of askanim founded Tomche Shabbos of Rockland County. The fledgling organization distributed boxes every other week, filled with leftover food from Tzedoka V’Chesed in Williamsburg. A Monsey Trails driver would bring the food back at the end of his route. Within two years, Tomche Shabbos began purchasing its own food. Gruenbaum Bakery in Washington Heights agreed to donate challah, and a commuter to the Heights would bring it back every week. “About five years later,” says a Tomche staff mem-
ber, “We found out that his job had moved to Connecticut. But he would leave work early every Thursday to pick up the challah — he didn’t want to lose the zechus. These are the kinds of incredible people who helped build Tomche Shabbos’ foundations.” The community did its part, and so did the One Above. By 1992, Tomche Shabbos had a waiting list. Late one Friday afternoon, a driver called the Rosenstock home, insisting that the organization help every family in need. He was told, “If you can get $2,000 of funding from new sources to start us off, we’ll take on the additional families.” ($2,000 in 1992 was the equivalent of about $4,000 today.) “Where do you want me to get $2,000?!” the man demanded. “Where do you want me to get $2,000?!” Mr. Rosenstock retorted, and the call finally ended. Moments later, the mailman dropped off the family’s mail — and inside was a check for $2,000 from a new donor. Mr. Rosenstock called the driver
back and told him Tomche no longer had a waiting list. “That’s when I became fully on board,” says Mrs. Rosenstock. “That is when I saw firsthand how if we try to do something for the klal, Hashem will do the rest.” Tomche Shabbos soon reached 100 boxes a week, operating out of a small garage with no room for storage and no electricity. But now they badly needed a larger space. Fortunately, Sammy and Laurie Friedland had just bought a house in Forshay. They offered Tomche Shabbos their two-car garage — even before their family moved in! That garage became the organization’s home for the next five years, destroying the family’s lawn and driveway lights so often that the Friedlands eventually stopped fixing them. But when Tomche Shabbos outgrew the garage and moved to its iconic warehouse in Spook Rock Industrial Park, the Friedlands cried because their children would no longer hear the Thursday night bustle of chesed. As Tomche Shabbos became more familiar with the needs of the Monsey community, they began to realize that food boxes were only a drop in the proverbial bucket. One night about fifteen years ago, a driver called Tomche headquarters and said, “I think something is wrong. I just dropped off a box, and the home was pitch dark. Could the family be away?” Tomche Shabbos soon learned that the family’s electricity had been turned off. That was the first utility bill the organization paid, but it was far from the last. In 2008, the Tomche Shabbos staff began asking themselves, “Is the goal to deliver food to every door? Wouldn’t it be better to help people find jobs so they could regain their independence?” And Partners in Parnosoh was born. One Shabbos, Alan Rosenstock had just finished speaking in a shul when a man approached him. The man’s business had failed, and he asked Alan to find someone to teach him computers so he could get another job. Alan told his story at Rabbi Schabes’ shul the next Shabbos and asked if any of his listeners

RCN DIVISIONS TOMCHE SHABBOS could step up. On Sunday, the shul called a meeting, which concluded by putting together a team to teach job training courses, not only to that one person but to all unemployed people in the community. As needs arose, the organization branched out further to assist with unexpected medical expenses, outstanding debt, clothing distributions, weddings/simchas, and more. “We have great hakaras hatov to the Monsey community for having our back at every step,” says board member Ari Halpert. “Whenever we saw the need for a new service, they gave us the support we needed to make it possible. Their chesed and tzedakah continuously leave me in awe.”

Monsey looks very different from the way it did 30 years ago. When Tomche Shabbos was first founded, its mailing list included 5,000 families. The community at that point stretched from Route 59 to just shy of Viola Road, as well as Forshay. Today, their mailing list reaches 12,000 households, and Monsey’s borders continue to expand on every side, with an incredible influx of new families choosing to settle in this amazing community. As Monsey has grown, so have the needs, and the number of available chesed services has grown along with them. Now Rockland Chesed Network (RCN) will strive to be the source of emergency aid for community members facing financial challenges while offering preventative solutions that help more families remain self-sufficient. “We are so excited to finally roll out Rockland Chesed Network to the community,” says Avi Goldstein, Director of Development. “RCN will give us an infrastructure for all these services, and it will enable us to continue growing to support the growing community.” As RCN’s summer fundraiser approaches, they are relying on the community’s support. Just as the organization has always been there for the community, the community has always been there for them. “In the past 30 years, I’ve seen the community step up time and time again,” says Mr. Rosenstock. “And it never gets old. I am continually amazed by witnessing just how much our volunteers and donors give of themselves to help the klal.”

C H A P T E R 11 RECAP: Zach believes he’s been cursed. Chaim Simcha gently suggests it’s more likely Hashem is sending him a message — but that only Zach knows what that message is. Izzy asks why Chaim Simcha didn’t give Zach the obvious answer: that Zach’s problems were sent to free his schedule, so he could come with them to Poland. But Chaim Simcha says his job here is to help Zach, not themselves.
“S
o now what?” The old clunker was finally back on the road, despite the dire predictions of Frank the mechanic. Chaim Simcha sat at the wheel, the vents blasting heated air directly onto his hands. It had been freezing when they’d come to reclaim the car, and they’d been outside for a good ten minutes as Frank described a long list of offenses their car was guilty of. The repair had cost a pretty penny, too. Still, it was money well spent. When they finally did enter the car, it started quickly and drove better than it had in ages. The motor was cold, though. It wasn’t until they merged onto the freeway that the air blowing from the vents was truly hot. Until then, they’d sat there in shivering silence, watching their breath
mist in front of them, too uncomfortable to chat. Now, with car and passengers both starting to thaw, Izzy voiced the question that had been on his mind for some time. “Now what what?” Chaim Simcha responded. “We both have plenty of work to catch up on. Should I drop you at the office?” Izzy stared out at the highway. A few curious snowflakes splatted dully against the windshield. It wasn’t a proper snowstorm yet, but it was just a matter of time. “Drop me at home. I’m not sure I’m going in today, it’s so late already. If I do go, I’ll need my car.” He gave his brother an inquisitive look. “But I was asking about the manuscript. How’re we gonna get it?” Chaim Simcha, eyes on the road, shrugged. “Oh. Beats me! But I’ll think of
something.” “And you know that because…” Izzy stared at him suspiciously. Was Chaim Simcha hiding something? “How come you’re so glib about this all of a sudden?” “It just seems like things are going our way, that’s all.” Chaim Simcha turned to Izzy and flashed him a smile. “Hashem’s gone to an awful lot of trouble just to not give us the manuscript, if that’s really His plan. It makes more sense to me the other way around. Besides, everything’s working out so perfectly thus far, so —” For a moment, Izzy thought his brother was being sarcastic, but no. He seemed entirely serious. “Are you kidding?!” Izzy blurted. “Nothing has gone right about this trip! We couldn’t convince Zach to help, and then we lost most of a day to car trouble!” “On the contrary. Everything went exactly right.” Chaim Simcha said. “It wasn’t what we thought we were there for, but we certainly were there for a reason. Think about it — we met Zach just before everything went bad for him. And who does he turn to to help him make sense of it all? Us! Hashem wanted us there, Izzy. That’s why we were in Morristown. To find a spark and send it to Shamayim.” Izzy leaned back in his seat, feeling vaguely annoyed. Perhaps it was just the weather. The snow was coming down harder now, and the thought of the world being blanketed in ice yet again felt oppressive to him. “Easy for you to say,” he said, careful to keep his voice even. “He came to you for guidance. But what was I doing there?” “I don’t know, Izzy.” His brother patted him on the shoulder. “But we haven’t had this much time to hang out in forever. If Hashem sent you here today just for that, I’d be grateful…” * * * * *
Leonard Bergman sat in his office and worried. His latest investment was a string of houses in southern Detroit. He’d gotten the idea from a friend over dinner about seven months earlier. Lenny had been in the middle of a few things, and cash was tight, so when an old friend, quite well-off, offered to take him out

“Look, I’m doing what I can, Mr. Bergman,” Nathan replied, with the air of someone trying to keep calm in the face of relentless insult. “But if a tenant leaves without a forwarding address, what am I supposed to do?”
LENNY WAS SOLD. AS SOON AS HE COULD RAISE THE CASH, HE ARRANGED A BUY. “Is that what happened?” “Yeah,” Nathan said. “Two of the houses. One day, the tenants were just gone. In the third, no offense, but you signed a really bad guy. One of these street gangs, you know. They’re using the place as a headquarters, and they won’t pay or leave.” “So call the —” “You don’t pay me enough to stick my neck out like that, man,” Nathan answered angrily. “I’ve got kids! These guys know where I live!” Lenny was furious. “This is your fault! You were supposed to screen the tenants!” “What was I supposed to do? Guy didn’t say he was in a gang…” Not only that, but a little more prodding revealed that one of the abandoned houses had burned to the ground. Nathan said nobody had seen anything. But the copper pipes, the water heater, and other valuables had been looted from the scene. So there you had it. One, maybe two of the homes was a complete wash. Another was empty, and would be for a while; Nathan was not very energetic about finding a new tenant. As for the other five, tenants in two of the homes had started complaining about repairs that would cost more than a month’s rent each. Another was already looking to get out of their contract. Apparently, they preferred to raise children in a different kind of neighborhood. 180

Lenny’s business venture, which had started so well, was now barely paying for itself. If he lost another tenant, he’d be paying back his loans out of pocket at a time when he could barely keep up with his own expenses. He looked over the houses he was representing. He desperately needed a few big sales to tide him over. There was a really beautiful penthouse apartment, which would fetch a nice commission when it sold, but the sellers were asking too much. It had been on the market for months without attracting more than a few casual views. Lenny couldn’t convince the owners to lower the price, so it sat empty. What else did he have on hand? There was that 15-bedroom mansion. Old money had been inherited by young blood, and the new generation wanted a high-rise in the city rather than a gated estate. Lenny would love to sell that place; it would set him up for several months. And he was sure he would sell it, eventually. But it had been on the market for years, and there was no telling when the right millionaire would come along. There just weren’t enough of them to go around. Everything else he had right now were your standard apartments and houses, nothing big enough to solve his problems. Not unless he sold them all, of course, but that was beyond hope. And so he sat and worried, and toyed with what was left of his hair underneath the yarmulke. He almost jumped when the phone rang, he was so lost in his troubles, but he snatched it up in time. “Lenny Bergman Realty,” he said into the phone. “Lenny? This is Chaim Simcha Ginzburg.” “Oh, hey, it’s my cousin, the rabbi!” Lenny said into the phone, his voice exuding as much false cheer as he could muster. “How you doing?” “I’m doing very well, baruch Hashem,” Chaim Simcha responded. “I’d like your help with something. Can you give me half an hour of your time? Happy to pay a consultant’s fee…” TO BE CONTINUED...

The supply of cream cheese on grocery shelves is dwindling, and there’s mass production of all things dairy in the kitchen. Shavuos is coming, and yes, we can craft that perfect cheesecake: creamy, smooth, just rich enough, just sweet enough, decorated and adorned to befit a yom tov table. The cheesecake of our dreams. Creating the perfect yom tov cheesecake is not rocket science. With a few choice tips and attention to detail, your cheesecake can be that cheesecake. Allow me to lead you through the do's and don’ts, all the way to the sweet and glorious finish line.

DO Invest in a springform pan. It isn't a big investment, and it will get you far. There’s no comparing the presentation that a sturdy pan brings, with its clean lines and straight edges. Bring your ingredients to room temperature. Line up all the ingredients on the counter so they are ready when you are, and they will blend together quickly and easily. Make a water bath. A water bath, also known as a bain-marie, is the baker's secret to creamy cheesecake perfection. We don't want any cracks in our facades!
DON’T Overmix your batter. You don't want to incorporate extra air into the mixture. We’re going for smooth, rich and creamy cheesecake here. Raise the temperature above 325° when baking cheesecake. Cheesecakes benefit from low and slow baking. You can even bake a cheesecake at 300° for creamier results, though it’ll take a bit longer. Overbake your cheesecake. If you wait until the very center is set, you've missed the boat. A cheesecake should be slightly wobbly at the inner center and firm around the edges. Once there, shut the heat and allow your cheesecake to cool in the closed oven.

1. Preheat the oven to 350°. 2. Remove the bottom of a 9" springform pan, and line it with a piece of parchment paper that's a bit bigger than the pan on top. Close the ring over the parchment paper to seal it tightly in place. Set this aside.
11. Once the mixture has cooled to a thick but still pourable consistency, pour half the nougat ganache onto the crust. Return this to the freezer to set. 12. Wrap the entire springform pan from the outside with heavy-duty silver foil, going up the sides and pressing down on the bottom to seal it tightly. This will prevent the cheesecake from getting wet in the water bath. 13. Blend together all cheesecake ingredients except the eggs until you have a smooth mixture. Add the eggs and mix until just incorporated. Don't overmix. 14. Pour the cheesecake batter into the pan. 15. Place a cookie sheet filled with 1" of hot water into the oven. Place the cheesecake onto the cookie sheet. 16. Lower the temperature to 325°, and bake for approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. 17. The cheesecake is ready when the cake is set around the edge and the 2-inch center area is still somewhat wobbly. 18. Turn off the oven, and allow the cheesecake to cool in the oven for 1 hour. 19. Remove the cheesecake from the oven, and allow it to cool completely on the counter or on a wire rack. 20. To remove the cheesecake from the springform pan, wet a butter knife with hot water, and run it around all the sides to release the cheesecake. Use the knife to smooth any imperfections around the cheesecake. 21. Pour reserved nougat ganache over the cheesecake. If it has thickened too much at this point, reheat until pourable.
2. Blend the cookies in a food processor.
To make the dairy whip topping:
4. Place the cookie crumbs and the butter in a lined 9x13" pan.
22. Beat the whip until firm and stiff, but don't overbeat. (I find that very cold, slightly slushy whip works best.)
5. Bake this mixture for 15 to 18 minutes, mixing every few minutes. 6. Remove the pan from the oven, and pour the crumb mixture into the prepared springform pan. 7. Press down on the crumb mixture with the back of a spoon until smooth. Place this pan into the freezer so it sets while you prepare the rest of the cheesecake. Next, prepare the ganache: 8. Place the heavy cream in a small pot ,and heat it until just below the boil. Remove from heat. 9. Add the milk chocolate and nougat powder, and mix to combine. 10. Blend this together until you have a smooth mixture.
23. In a separate bowl, mix the remaining cream ingredients. Add this to the whipped cream, and pulse until combined. 24. When nougat ganache is firm, drop spoonfuls of cream onto the cheesecake, then turn and lift the back of a spoon on the cream to swirl it in all directions. 25. To create the crescent-shaped cocoa effect over half of the cheesecake, hold a 9" plate over half of the cream, and lightly dust cocoa over the cheesecake in an ombre effect — going going darker on the outside and lighter toward the center — with a sieve or sifter. Optional: To omit one step, use the ganache only as a topping instead of layering it under and over the cheese. The effect is less sophisticated, but the taste is just as delicious.

1. Preheat the oven to 350°. 2. Remove the bottom of a 9" springform pan, and line it with parchment paper. Close the ring over the parchment paper, sealing it tightly in place. Set this aside. 3. Blend the cookies in a food processor. 4. Place the cookie crumbs and the butter in a lined 9x13” pan. 5. Bake this mixture for 15 to 18 minutes, mixing every few minutes. 6. Remove the pan from the oven, and pour the crumbs into the prepared springform pan. 7. Press down on the crumbs with the back of a spoon until smooth, then place the springform pan in the freezer so it sets while you prepare the rest of the cheesecake. 8. Blend together all cheesecake ingredients except the eggs, until you have a smooth mix-
9. Wrap the entire springform pan from the outside with heavy-duty silver foil, going up the sides and pressing down on the bottom to seal it tightly. This will prevent the cheesecake from getting wet in the water bath. 10. Pour cheesecake batter into the pan. 11. Place a cookie sheet filled with 1" of hot water into the over. Place the cheesecake onto the cookie sheet. 12. Lower the temperature to 325°, and bake for approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. 13. The cheesecake is ready when the cake is set around the edge and the 2-inch center area is still somewhat wobbly. 14. Turn off the oven, and allow the cheesecake to cool in the oven for 15 minutes. 15. After 15 minutes, mix the sour cream with the sugar, and pour this onto the cheesecake. Return the cheesecake to the oven (that's off), and continue cooling for an additional 45 minutes. 16. Remove the cake from the oven, and allow it to cool completely on the counter or on a wire rack. 17. To remove the cheesecake from the springform pan, wet a butter knife with hot water, and run it around all the sides to release the cheesecake. Use the knife to smooth any imperfections around the cheesecake. To make the dairy whipped topping: 18. Beat the whip until it’s firm and stiff, but don't overbeat. (I find that very cold, slightly slushy whip works best.) 19. In a separate bowl, mix the remaining cream ingredients. Add this to the whipped cream, and pulse until combined. 20. Pipe a border of whipped cream around the entire rim of the cheesecake. (I used the Ateco 827 open star tip.) 21. Slice some cherries halfway open. Fill the center of the cake with a mound of cherries, some whole and some sliced open. Tip: If you have extra dairy whipped cream, get creative and make refreshing fruit cups with layers of whip, fresh fruit and some cookie crumbs. Voila — another delicious dessert!

Grasslands at the Giving “No one shall ascend with you, neither shall anyone be seen anywhere on the mountain, neither shall the sheep and the cattle graze facing that mountain." –Shemos 34:3 How do we know that there was greenery at Matan Torah? The pasuk hints to us that a tremendous miracle occurred in the midbar, for despite Har Sinai being located in a barren desert, the area sprouted with herbage, causing Hashem to command Bnei Yisroel not to allow their animals to graze there during the momentous event.

Dairy on the Day The Torah was given on a Shabbos, leaving the Bnei Yisroel — who were now obligated in all the laws of kashrus — unable to shecht animals and kasher their utensils on that day. Therefore, the Yidden prepared milchigs for the obligatory seudah at the foot of the mountain.

The Torah Under Your Tongue Your lips drip flowing honey, [My] kallah; honey and milk are under your tongue, and the fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon. –Shir Hashirim 4:11 The Torah is referred to as honey and milk in Shir Hashirim, for honey is sweet, while milk provides all the nourishment needed to sustain life. So, too, the Torah provides the nourishment necessary for our souls.
Branches Near the Bimah There is a minhag to place trees and greenery in shuls and homes on Shavuos to remind us to daven for a year of bounty.
At four times the world is judged: On Pesach concerning grain; on Shavuos concerning fruits of a tree, on Rosh Hashanah all creatures pass before Him like sheep…; and on the festival [of Sukkos] they are judged concerning water. –Rosh Hashanah 1:3 May 25, 2022

A Rose Among Thorns "As a rose among the thorns, so is my beloved among the daughters." –Shir Hashirim 2:2 The Bnei Yissaschar explains that Klal Yisroel is like a rose among thorns, mentioning a midrash that tells of a king who owned a beautiful orchard. After being away for some time, the king returned to find the orchard overrun with thorns and weeds, and he brought a crew to cut it down. Looking closely, however, he saw one exquisite rose growing in the brambles and decided that he would leave the orchard standing in the merit of that single flower. Similarly, Bnei Yisroel lived in a world in which the inhabitants had turned their backs on their Creator, leaving the world largely devoid of merit. But when they were offered the Torah, they answered, “Naaseh v’nishma,” causing Hashem to spare the world, saying, “The orchard shall be saved on account of this flower. For the sake of the Torah and of Yisroel, the world shall be saved.” –Vayikra Rabbah 23:3

A Tasty Illusion “The mountain of Hashem is the mountain of Bashan; the mountain of peaks (Har Gav’nunim) is the mountain of Bashan. –Tehillim 68:16 Rashi: The mountain of Hashem is the mountain of Bashan: And where did He spread it out? On Har Sinai, which is the mountain of Hashem and is near Bashan on the eastern side of the Yarden. Another name for Har Sinai is Har Gav’nunim. Fascinatingly, “Gav’nunim” is related to the Hebrew word for cheese — gevinah.

Two Meals The choicest of the first of your soil you shall bring to the house of Hashem... You shall not cook a kid in its mother's milk." –Shemos 34:6 Both Bikkurim and the prohibition against mixing meat and milk are mentioned in one pasuk. According to the Zohar, each day of the year corresponds to one of the 365 negative commandments. The negative commandment of not mixing meat and milk is therefore intrinsically connected to Shavuos and is one of the reasons for the tradition of having two seudos: one of milk and one of meat.

More Than Just a Meal “…they perceived G-d, and they ate and drank.” –Shemos 24:11 Rambam: And they ate and drank: This means that they ate the shelamim there, at the lower part of the mountain, before Hashem, before returning to their tents, for shelamim have to be eaten within an enclosure…The meaning of the expression “and they drank” is that they made it an occasion for rejoicing and festival, for such is one’s duty to rejoice at the receiving of the Torah, just as He commanded when they finished writing all the words of the Torah upon the stones, “And you shall sacrifice shelamim, and eat there; and you shall rejoice before Hashem your G-d.” (Devarim 27:7) Eating a seudah on Shavuos has been practiced since the very year we received the Torah. It is a holy mitzvah, a way to elevate the physical world into an act of Divine service.

Table Mountain, South Africa Just like the Statue of Liberty greets newcomers at the New York port, Table Mountain is the first sight of land that welcomes sailors and settlers to Cape Town, South Africa. It’s an iconic mountain, known for its flat top that seems completely incongruous for a mountain. This plateau is edged by cliffs and is home to hundreds of species of flora and wildlife, many of which are endemic to the mountain and found nowhere else in the world. Often, the mountain is covered by a layer of clouds, appropriately named the “Tablecloth.” To add mystery to the mountain, there are several cave systems within it to explore. These caves are unusual in that they are carved out of the sandstone of which the mountain is made, as opposed to more typically occurring limestone caves. ָה ִר י ם ַה גְ בֹ ִה י ם ַל יְ ֵע ִל י ם ְס ָל ִע י ם ַמ ְח ֶס ה ) י"ח:(תהלים ק"ד

Vinicunca, Peru It seems almost too fantastical to be true, but this red and yellow mountain is actually a natural wonder nestled in the Andes Mountains of Peru. Also called the Rainbow Mountain, its gorgeously hued stripes are created by the various mineral deposits on the mountain. As incredible as it sounds, Vinicunca was discovered only in the last ten years, when the ice and snow that covered its stripes melted away and revealed this hidden treasure. Nowadays, Vinicunca sees thousands of tourists every day. They hike up to its more than 17,100-foot altitude to take in the views, which include other colorful mountains and hills nearby. These accompanying peaks are also colored by minerals, though none is as captivating as Rainbow Mountain. ' ָה ִר י ם ַּכ ד ֹו נַ ג נָ ַמ ס ּו ִמ ל ְפ נֵ י ה )' ה:(תהלים צ"ז

Mount Fuji, Japan Mount Fuji is impressive for its nearly perfect conical shape, which is especially noticeable from November to May when its snow-capped peak provides great visual contrast. The mountain is surrounded by five large lakes, and the region is full of sakura, the cherry blossom trees for which Japan is famous. While Fuji is most beautiful when viewed from a distance, it has a tendency to hide behind the clouds, so getting close up is sometimes the only way to get a good look at it. Fuji is actually an active volcano, but the last time it erupted was 300 years ago. This kind of mountain, formed by hardened lava, is known as a stratovolcano. יִ גַ ע ֶּב ָה ִר י ם וְ יֶ ֱע ָׁש נ ּו ) ל"ב:(תהלים ק"ד

Aoraki/ Mount Cook, New Zealand Down at nearly the bottom of the world, right off the coast of New Zealand, towers a permanently snow-covered mountain range surrounded by lakes and glaciers. The highest peak in this icy range was named Mount Cook by foreign explorers, though it still goes by its local name of Aoraki as well. There are lots of exciting ways to enjoy Mount Aoraki, from swimming in the nearby iceberg-filled waters to admiring it from the air by booking a helicopter tour that will take you right over the snowy peaks. The sun reflecting off the snow creates dazzling vistas for the mountain’s many visitors. ֵא י ְך ּתֹ א ְמ ר ּו ְל נַ ְפ ִׁש י נ ּו ִד י : ַה ְר ֶכ ם ִצ ּפ ֹו ר )' א:(תהלים י"א
Mount Everest, Asia Ask someone to name a towering mountain peak, and one of the answers you’ll most likely get is Mount Everest. Known as the mother of mountains, Everest is the tallest point above sea level in the world, at 29031.7 feet. That fact makes it a prime destination for determined mountain climbers. The extremely high altitude levels on the mountain can be terribly dangerous, but that doesn’t stop these mountain conquerors, most of whom are accompanied by a Sherpa guide. Sherpas are people who have lived on the side of the mountain for generations, and they’re known for functioning on less oxygen than most people. With the Sherpas to lead the way, mountaineers lug their own bottled oxygen to breathe at the summit of this famous mountain. Climbing Everest is even more risky since helicopter mechanisms don’t work at such high altitudes. That means there is no rescue from the top of the mountain. Anyone aiming to reach the summit makes sure to follow the 2 o’clock curfew, which means getting to the peak before 2 p.m. Otherwise, conditions are not favorable enough to make it back to a camp in time. But there’s no need to get so close to enjoy Mount Everest! Its majesty is easily visible from the surrounding villages. וְ ת ֹו ֲע פ ֹו ת ָה ִר י ם ל ֹו )' ד:(תהלים צ"ה

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania Most of the world’s tallest mountains are part of mountain ranges, including Mount Everest. Kilimanjaro, however, is the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Mount Kilimanjaro is also Africa’s tallest peak. Tens of thousands of climbers reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro every year, as it’s a relatively easy peak to scale, with pretty smooth topography and lots of wildlife as you go along. No mountaineering gear or experience is needed, but the hike is still dangerous, because of the risk of altitude sickness at its 19,340-foot peak. Along the way, climbers get to see the transition between five different distinct habitats. יִ ְׂש א ּו ָה ִר י ם ָׁש ל ֹו ם ָל ָע ם )' ג:(תהלים ע"ב

Castle Mountain, Alberta It’s easy to see how this mountain got its name: Its jagged peaks look just like a fabled hilltop castle. The distinctive shape of the silhouette was created by years of erosion that warped the minerals of the rock, creating a castellated look, as this series of gently sloping surfaces is called. Called the hidden gem of the Canadian Rockies, this mountain is pretty isolated and far from civilization. Its rocky outcroppings don’t even feature a proper trail, just dirt roads to follow. The mountain lions that call the rocks home are another reason Castle Mountain stays seen yet mostly untouched. ש א ֵע י נַ י ֶא ל ֶה ָה ִר י ם ֵמ ַא יִ ן יָ בֹ א ֶע זְ ִר י ׂ ָ ֶא )' א:(תהלים קכ"א

Mount Huangshan/ Yellow Mountain, China View this mountain at sunset or sunrise for a breathtaking display of colors on the landscape. Or hike up its trails to see the most oddly shaped pine trees, including one that looks like a man with his hand outstretched in greeting, named “Greeting Guests Pine.” Up on the mountain visitors will find Flying-Over Rock, a boulder that seems to be nearly suspended in the air, hardly touching its resting place at all. Even from farther away, tourists can behold the sea of clouds that gives the Yellow Mountain an ethereal look. The peaks look like islands in the water when the sea of clouds surrounds them in the winter, but if you’re looking for actual water, try the hot springs on the mountain that are known to have healing properties. Matterhorn, Switzerland Symmetrically shaped with four faces facing the four directions, mountains don’t get too much closer to perfection than this one, which straddles the border between Switzerland and Italy. This kind of mountain is called a glacial horn, which is when three or more glaciers meet and force the land between them up into a peak. Because of their shape, glacial horns are also called pyramidal peaks. To make things even more idyllic, matterhorn means meadow peak, named for the lush green valley surrounding the snowy cap. Torres del Paine, Chile In Chilean Patagonia, right in the middle of a national park, three granite peaks tower above the surrounding forest. Aptly named Torres del Paine, meaning “blue towers,” these peaks rise majestically above the surrounding lakes and rivers. Tourists visit the park at sunrise to view the peaks painted in magnificent shades of purple and red as the sun makes its ascent behind them. Har Tzion, Yerushalayim In the Torah, Har Habayis is called Tzion. Today, the hill just outside the walls of Yerushalayim’s Old City goes by the name of Har Tzion. Between the years 1948 and 1967, when the Kosel was under Jordanian rule, Yidden visited Har Tzion to daven where a sliver of the Kosel was visible. On Har Tzion is Kever Dovid Hamelech, which is a popular spot for tefillos. The Argument and the Anger Annoyance during disagreements hides the discomfort of insecurity; giving the feeling some space will diminish it We’re sitting together enjoying the outdoors and a discussion about a particular school of thought in child rearing ensues. As someone familiar with the subject, I have strong opinions about the topic and I don’t shy away from expressing my thoughts. But apparently there’s someone, a neighbor, who voices disagreement. Yes, he's heard my point, but no, he doesn’t think my thinking is right. I’m feeling annoyed and irritated. That’s before I’ve even given myself the chance to consider his point and present a counterargument. The initial reaction to disagreement is often one of anger, even resentment. But why? Why is an opposing view so annoying? What is it about disagreement that has such power to stir up negative emotions? It’s difficult to use the truth versus false, because we get the same reaction whether we're right or wrong. Even then, when there’s no doubt in our mind that we’re right, we still get the same reaction. We want to be correct. Being right is part of our habit and deeply ingrained in the psyche. But the truth is that we can never be sure. There are hardly any instances when we’re fully convinced, beyond a shadow of doubt, that we’re right. A jury’s conclusion should be beyond
reasonable, not any doubt. Expecting a verdict beyond a shadow of doubt is next to impossible and would render the justice system irrelevant.
Why is an opposing view so annoying? What is it about disagreement that has such power to stir up negative emotions? When expressing an opinion, there's a part of us that knows we might be wrong - even if we brush it off. It’s exactly this fear that gets triggered when someone disagrees with us. Ignoring subtle messages from our conscious is something we’re pretty skilled at; being forced to face the prospect of being wrong is an entirely different story. Someone voicing disagreement prompts that insecurity and generates the accompanying fear of being wrong. We don’t like that. We don’t like feeling insecure. This causes us to feel uncomfortable. And at the same time we hate acknowledging that uncertainty. We’re feeling conflicted. An emotional state of cognitive dissonance ensues — and we get angry.
Anger during disagreements is a cover for another uncomfortable emotion. What we’re really dealing with in cases of arguments is fear and anxiety, skillfully disguised as anger and resentment. If we’re to forgo the urge to respond right away and have a quick glance of what’s happening inside us, we’re likely to identify the true emotions lurking there.
Expecting a verdict beyond a shadow of doubt is next to impossible and would render the justice system irrelevant. We’ll discover a certain angst. We’ll find ourselves facing fear and other such emotions usually ruffled up in the wake of uncertainty and insecurity. The anger is there to cover up for the more difficult emotion of feeling unsafe — itself a close relative to the unbearable experience of feeling helpless. It’s easier to feel angry than to acknowledge fear and anxiety. Such is the program of our species. The trick is to allow some possibility of being wrong. Give the thought some space to dwell in, and the fear will dissipate. It’s the choking it off that’s really fueling the discomfort. Allow it to be, and off it’ll gradually go. I’m not talking about admitting to being wrong and as far as this advice is concerned we don’t necessarily have to acknowledge the truth. The point is to allow ourselves to feel the maybe-I’m-wrong sensation. That alone can take us a long way in reducing the anger, thereby allowing us to listen to the other person with a calm, if not peaceful mind. Where are Earth’s volcanoes? The lithosphere — the solid outer layer of Earth, which includes the crust of Earth as well as the upper, more solid part of the mantle — is not one solid sphere; it comprises eight larger, and then several smaller, tectonic plates. These plates are never perfectly still, moving at the almost immobile rate of about 0.6 inches a year (about the rate that toenails grow). As they shift, the plates — which are jagged at the edges — interact with each other in different ways. Often they grind past each other, soon locking into each other or forming faults (cracks) between plates. The seismic activity generated at these plate boundaries is largely what’s behind the occurrence of earthquakes, whose epicenters are at fault lines at the boundaries of these plates. And it’s also at these plate boundaries where volcanoes

The layers of Earth are found. Most of the world’s volcanoes are located along the rim of the Pacific Ocean, aptly called the “Ring of Fire.”
Eruption!
INNER CORE (1,300 kilometers)
OUTER CORE (2,250 kilometers)
Not all volcanoes are active. Some are considered extinct and have never erupted. Others are dormant. These have not erupted in a long time, but their activity is watched as they may erupt at some point in the future. And finally there are active volcanoes, which can be relied upon to erupt and are therefore carefully monitored by agencies and their scientists. To understand eruption, we visit the mantle, the layer beneath Earth’s crust, which is filled with magma. Magma is hot molten rock that gets increasingly hotter — and redder! — the farther from Earth’s surface it is. This means it would reach an average of 1832 degrees where it borders the crust and 6692 degrees where it borders the core of the Earth. Since a volcano is formed at plate

boundaries, when the magma reaches Earth’s surface, the sheer pressure of the rising super-heat emerging through the crack causes a forceful eruption of fiery lava, rocks and often entire chunks of the volcano’s cone, wreaking much havoc in its wake.

The form of eruption depends on the composition of magma in the area in question at the time. If the magma is thin and runny, the gasses can escape more gently and easily, flowing out of a volcano without any of the hot lava that features in more dangerous eruptions. Mount St. Helens in Washington is a good example of this, with the plumes it emits every few minutes. On the other hand, when a damaging eruption occurs, blasts of hot tephra shoot out of the volcano and destroy everything in their path. In addition to that initial wave of lava, volcanic ash usually bursts into the atmosphere and then falls back onto Earth’s surface like toxic snow, suffocating plants, animals and even

people. And if there’s water (such as from suddenly melted snow or streams) in that deadly mix, entire towns can be buried in this death flow.
Stay away! Or not? Surprisingly, there are those who specifically want to set up their homestead right near these ticking time bombs. Or maybe not that surprisingly, for those who understand the agricultural benefits volcanoes bring to their surrounding areas. Along with the magma that comes up from the Earth’s innards come valuable nutrients and minerals that put the most high-quality fertilizer to shame, making this “volcano soil” the best breeding ground for crops. Indeed, in some fifteen areas around Mount Vesuvius near Naples, as dangerous as it is known to be, grapevines flourish, and their pickings make for premium wines. And visitors? Well, thrill-seekers the world over take the risk to still their penchant for the rare and beautiful sights erupting volcanoes offer to visit active volcanoes despite the risks involved. 260

Eyjafjallajokull, Iceland This mouthful of a volcano got a comfortable place on the popular volcano list in 2010 when it made itself known in a dramatic series of eruptions. A combination of the plumes of ash and the direction of the winds thoroughly disrupted air travel over parts of Europe in April of that year in an unprecedented manner. Since then, ice-capped Eyjafjallajokull has been on the tourist map, becoming a popular attraction.

Pompeii was discovered by archaeologists completely preserved by volcanic ash
No photo of beautiful Naples is complete without Vesuvius and its smoky haze in the background. One of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world due to its proximity to Naples and its surrounding towns, it’s known for both its steady pyroclastic flows as well as more dramatic dangerous historic eruptions. Most famously, Vesuvius is known for completely destroying the city of Pompeii in the year 72, when the Roman city was buried in volcanic ash. The mix of water and ash dried so quickly that when archaeologists discovered the Roman city in 1709, they found it completely preserved in that cement. Vesuvius erupted again during World War II.

Meaning “long mountain,” this volcanic peak, the largest active volcano, is an interesting shape and makes up a large percentage of Hawaii Island. Since 1843, Mauna Loa has erupted 33 times; that’s an average of once every five years. Right now all is peaceful as it hasn’t erupted since 1984.
Mount St. Helens, Washington, USA This Washington volcanic peak is most famously known for its 1980 eruptions, one of the greatest series of volcanic explosions recorded in North America. (Before this notable series of eruptions, it had been dormant since 1857.) A total of 57 people and thousands of animals were killed in the explosion, and the volcano lost its north face. What draws so many people to this site is the plume of smoke it emits every few minutes, reminding visitors of its damaging potential and that St. Helens is no dormant volcano.

THE POWER AND BEAUTY OF SEFER TEHILLIM BY: P. SAMUELS
Dovid Hamelech writes in Tehillim, “Va’ani sefilasi lecha Hashem eis ratzon — But, as for me, may my prayer to You, Hashem, be at a favorable time, Elokim, with Your abundant kindness, answer me with the Truth of Your deliverance.” We know that the name Hashem symbolizes rachamim — mercy — while the name Elokim symbolizes din — judgment. Dovid beseeches Hashem that even if he is not worthy, Hashem should convert all the harsh judgment against him into full mercy. The above pasuk is just one example of Dovid Hamelech speaking to Hashem on behalf of Klal Yisroel. Anything that a Yid could ever need or want, every request and plea for forgiveness or mercy, can be found in Sefer Tehillim. So, too, every possible expression of gratitude to Hashem for His abundance and generosity is found in its pages.
To Encompass Us All The Ma’or Vashemesh, Rav Klonymus Kalman Epstein, writes that Dovid Hamelech incorporated in Tehillim every need that any Yid would require until Moshiach’s days. There are prayers expressing that the ill should be healed, the healthy should remain in good health, a wish for a good livelihood, and that all unfavorable decrees should be nullified. The Shlah Hakadosh writes that we do not have anything as great as the Sefer Tehillim, which is all-encompassing. It has passages that praise Hashem, others to awaken the Yidden to repent, passages mentioning complete forgiveness. All of this was written with ruach hakodesh, and one who says Tehillim is considered to have both prayed and learned Torah. The Shlah further declares that anyone seeking to become close to Hashem should make Tehillim an important part of his routine. He also claims that it is preferable to say fewer chapters with great kavanah rather than rattle off many chapters while giving them little thought. The Yismach Yisroel says that Dovid Hamelech wrote Tehillim for every type of person, in every possible condition — and everyone can find themselves in its pages. Reb Pinchos Koritzer, zt”l, when asked for a segulah for parnassah or other necessities, would tell the person to say the entire Sefer Tehillim from beginning to end without a break, without even saying the Yehi Ratzon that is customary to say upon the completion of each sefer.
Pathways to Connection Someone once wrote of his mother, an ehrliche woman of the previous generation, that she shed copious tears while reciting Tehillim, though she did not understand one word of what she was saying. “Ashrei ha’ish asher lo halach b’atzas reshaim… Oy, my son Pinchas needs a good job to support his growing family. Hodu laShem ki tov, my daughter Chany needs shidduchim for her children. Borchi nafshi es Hashem, my Suri is married three years and she was not yet blessed with a child.” She knew, with her emunah peshutah, that she was talking to Hashem and that He would answer her. Today we are blessed with an abundance of translated Sifrei Tehillim, in every language spoken by Yidden and in formats to suit every taste and preference. The Mesillas Yesharim emphasizes the importance of understanding what you are saying. He writes that if you think deeply into the content, it is impossible not to be inspired to emulate the ways of Hashem.
The Last Mitzvah Sefer Tehillim has 150 chapters. One midrash states that Dovid Hamelech performed all of the mitzvos ex-
cept the mitzvah of shiluach haken. He did not want to send away the mother bird so that he could take the eggs or the fledglings, because in his day, the non-Jews were well versed in witchcraft, and he was afraid that the bird would turn out to be a witchcraft practitioner in disguise. Ken (nest) has the Hebrew numerical value of 150, so Dovid Hamelech wrote Tehillim, which has 150 chapters, instead.
Little Lamb A little lamb once spotted some deliciouslooking grass growing out of a rock in the middle of the field. He wanted to run up to it, but the shepherd stopped him. “Little lamb,” he said, “I know you think that the grass is delicious, but you should also know that the rock is full of cracks and fissures. If I were to let you go eat that grass, you would get your little feet stuck.” In Tehillim, Dovid Hamelech tells us that we should put all of our trust in Hashem because He knows what’s best for us. “Hashem ro’i lo echsor — Hashem is my Shepherd and I shall lack nothing.” He knows exactly what is good for me, and if I don’t have something, it means that I do not need it. The kapitel continues: “Gam ki elech b’gei tzalmaves lo ira ra ki Atah imadi — Though I walk in the shadow of the valley of death, I shall not fear evil because You are with me.” In many languages, (English being a notable exception), there are formal and informal forms of address. In French, a human king would be addressed with the formal vous and not with the informal tu. Yiddish has ihr, with which one addresses important people, and the more familiar du. The Kozhnitzer Maggid, Rav Yisroel Hopstein, zt”l, states that although we cannot possibly begin to fathom the greatness of Hashem, He still bestowed upon us the chesed of being able to address Him directly. He is our King, He is our Master, He rules our world… and still, we use the word You when talking to Hashem. What a zechus! In the tefillah said after reciting Tehillim, we ask Hashem to consider our words as if Dovid Hamelech himself had recited them. May we merit, in the oft-repeated words, “Hashem hoshia haMelech yaaneinu b’yom koreinu — May our King always answer us on the day that we call out to Him.” Amen!

INAUGURAL MSW COHORT OF COMMUNITY LEADERS IS LAUNCHED
DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND
Bassi’s
This week, a first-of-its-kind event took place at the Sara Schenirer Institute as the inaugural cohort of the Masters in Social Work Leadership Program met for an intensive two-day orientation. With the Jewish community experiencing incredible growth, the need for competent mental health professionals has become ever more apparent; with demand far outpacing the supply. Thanks to the partnership between Sara Schenirer and the Wurzweiler School of Social Work, in 2018, a rigorous social work program ensuring hashkafic suitability was established, bringing top-notch professionals back into our communities. This, however, was deemed insufficient, as a serious void still existed. Rabbonim, menahalim, principals, and askonim are usually the first called on for support in difficult situations, yet their lack of formal training leaves them unprepared and untrained for situations that are potentially life-altering. Compounding the problem is the reality that MSW programs are full-time programs which makes it virtually impossible for them to participate. Addressing this glaring need became a high priority, and in 2021, Sara Schenirer and Wurzweiler collaborated to create a specialized new track to allow leaders in the community to continue actively working in their current positions while earning their degrees. Offered fully online and over an extended period of time, the program is ideal for busy leaders for whom flexibility and adaptability are key. The inaugural cohort is composed of an outstanding group of students, among them prestigious rabbonim, experienced school principals, lay leaders, and student advisors. Their enthusiasm for this opportunity is palpable and the widespread sentiment among their new professors is that their future contributions to the Jewish community will be monumental.

In the third month after leaving Mitzrayim, Klal Yisroel arrived at the celebrated mountain where they were to receive the Torah. What was special about this mountain, what happened there, and where is it today? As it is known, Har Sinai was chosen not because it was the tallest, greenest, or prettiest — but rather because it was the most unassuming, to teach us that Torah is acquired through humility.
Klal Yisroel remained at Har Sinai for about one year.
What else happened here? Har Sinai was the spot where Hashem first appeared to Moshe Rabbeinu in the sneh, the burning thornbush. Before Moshe embarked on his mission to take Klal Yisroel out of Mitzrayim, Hashem spoke to him from the bush and told Moshe to bring them to “serve Hashem on this mountain” (Shemos 3:12).
Besides the monumental event of Matan Torah, Har Sinai was also the site where Cheit Ha’egel and the building of the Mishkan first took place.
A place to visit? After Matan Torah, Klal Yisroel never returned to Har Sinai. Eliyahu Hanavi once visited the mountain. He was running away from the wicked Queen Izevel. We find that Hashem did not necessarily approve of his choice of refuge, as Hashem asked Eliyahu twice: “Mah lecha poh — why are you here?” (Melachim I 19:9 and 19:13).

Where is it today? Is it the same place? The Torah mentions Midbar Tzin, Midbar Sin and Midbar Sinai. Are they one and the same?
Though there are numerous theories about where Har Sinai is today, none of them is conclusive. Chazal cite one reason why its location is unknown — to prevent it from turning into a makom mikdash.
Jabal Musa, Egypt Christians maintain that Jabal Musa, a mountain on the Sinai Peninsula, is the spot. In 1978, then-Egyptian President Anwar Sadat announced plans to turn it into a prayer site. In fact, Christians had already built a monastery there centuries before.
MIDBAR TZIN is close to Eretz Yisroel. It was the starting point from where the Meraglim began their tour of the Land. Klal Yisroel reached Midbar Tzin only during their last year in the Midbar.
Har Karkom, Eretz Yisroel Har Karkom, or Jabal Ideid in Arabic, is a mountain in the southwest Negev desert in Eretz Yisroel. The hypothesis that it is Har Sinai came after some archaeological findings at the site, but most archaeologists disregard those claims.
MIDBAR SIN, on the other hand, is a place where Klal Yisroel arrived one month after leaving Mitzrayim.
It seems there were settlements at the foot of this mountain after the Mabul. It is still the most settled area in this parched desert.
MIDBAR SINAI is a different place entirely, as indicated by the pasuk describing Midbar Sin to be between Eilim and Sinai.
Jabal al-Lawz, Saudi Arabia It is highly unlikely that this professed site is indeed Har Sinai. It is located in faraway Saudi Arabia, the historic Midyan. If this were indeed Har Sinai, Klal Yisroel’s route to Matan Torah would have been longer, and hardly a match to the journey recorded in the Torah.
Har Sinai is found on the border of Midbar Sinai.
What’s in a name? Although popularly known as Har Sinai, the auspicious mountain has another seven names! Here’s why:
HAR SINAI
CHOREV
HAR HA’ELOKIM
HAR CHEMED
Because it is a mountain upon which sinah — “hatred” — for the nations of the world descended, since they did not accept the Torah (Shabbos 89a).
From the word cherev, or sword, for the Torah invests beis din with the power to try capital cases.
Hashem’s mountain. By receiving the Torah, Klal Yisroel became a G-dly nation.
Hashem desired Har Sinai as the place to give His most desirable treasure, the Torah.
BEIS IMI
HAR HABASHAN
HAR HAMORIAH
HAR HAGAVNONIM
When Klal Yisroel accepted the Torah, they were born as a nation — in their “mother’s home.”
From the word shen — tooth. The Torah provides nourishment to the world much as teeth prepare food for digestion.
It is the “mountain of teaching,” for Hashem taught Moshe Rabbeinu the Torah here.
From the word gevinah — cheese. Cheese is a metaphor for purity, possibly because it comes from pure white milk.
