EYE-OPENING AND HEARTWARMING

(Re: For the Love of Our Children, Issue 346) I want to thank Chana Gluck for the truly thought-provoking article. While the idea wasn’t necessarily a new one to me, the author did a marvelous job at clearly describing how different kids’ preferences present themselves that I found my kids so easily — and for the first time learned with such clarity how I can express affection to each one in the way they digest it best. It completely changed my attitude about helping seemingly too old kids into clothes and playing that game right after the zman when my eyes are begging to be closed. And indeed, I found it so true that when I happily give my kids what they need, they really are satisfied and no longer have an endless vacuum to fill. Thank you. You have a real zechus! (Re: Inbox, Issue 346) I’d like to let the letter-writer “Still in New York” know that there are communities out there — far too many to count — where no kashrus compromises are needed. Additionally, children don’t miss out by growing up in an environment without the “New York” attitude, and where they learn to hold the door open for others, say “excuse me,” and perform other acts of derech eretz like them. Amazingly, they survive and probably grow up much healthier in many ways without eight aisles of nosh to choose from. Thanks for a great publication, S.Z. W E A T H E R

Great Time!

(Re: Inbox, Issue 346) Thank you for providing our community with a platform for meaningful public discussion. I’m writing in response to “Still in New York.” When Europe was destroyed and Yidden came to America, what kind of America did they come to? An empty one. They came to a spiritual wasteland and built it up from the ground up, but it started off as a midbar. All of our beautiful mosdos, shuls, stores, simcha halls, etc., were not in existence. We daven that Hashem send Moshiach fast, but if there’s one thing history teaches us, it’s that we should always have a plan B. These families building lives out of town are making tremendous sacrifices in order to create that plan B. They are not going to far-flung places for material quality of life. They actually forgo plenty of that. They miss out on family simchos. They don’t have 35 options of kosher breakfast cereal. They can’t walk into a store for a new pair of tights because theirs tore. It’s not easy, and still they do it. It’s only fair that we support these young and courageous families who are trying to ensure a Torah future for our children. Here’s to hoping for the Geulah Sheleimah bekarov, A Descendant of Holocaust Survivors

I’d like to share an experience I recently had to prevent others from falling for such a scam. Upon visiting the dentist with my daughter, I was told by the receptionist that I had an outstanding balance from prior dental work that the insurance had denied. Since I had received no notifications to that effect in the six months since the visit in question, neither

from the dentist’s office nor from the insurance company, I wanted to further look into the matter prior to paying. When I told her that I will check with the insurance company, the receptionist got back to me to inform me that the matter had been cleared and I did not owe the practice anything. I’m not sure if this was an oversight or a deliberate act on behalf of the office or the receptionist, but I did want to caution everyone that scammers are everywhere. Do not pay a bill that does not make sense without verifying that you indeed owe the money. F.F.

VOTE NO

On May 17th, there is a scheduled vote on the East Ramapo School District budget. Every registered voter in East Ramapo can vote on the budget. Voting is from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. There is also a vote for school board members in which only residents in wards 2, 6 and 9 can vote. The budget is about $262.5 million. The school district states that this means a budget-to-budget decrease of 3.64%. This is misleading since millions of dollars were added to last year’s budget due to COVID. Even though there is unprecedented new building in East Ramapo with hundreds, if not thousands, of new ratables coming onto the tax rolls, the district still projects an almost 4% tax increase. This is unconscionable. We are one of the poorest school districts in the state. We are still affected by COVID. There is currently an approximately 8.5% inflation rate. Therefore, we are recommending all voters in the East Ramapo Central School District to please VOTE NO on the budget. If you reside in wards 6 or 9, please vote for Yitzchok Gruber or Ephraim Weissmandl. Sincerely, South East Ramapo Tax Payers Association

PARSHAS EMOR To Value Another

In Parshas Emor, the Kohanim are instructed to “separate themselves from the kadshei Bnei Yisroel (i.e., the korbanos brought by the Yidden) so as not to desecrate Hashem’s Holy Name” (Vayikra 22:2). The Seforno comments on this pasuk that the Kohanim should not consider the offerings of the general public to be “chullin” (not sanctified) compared to their own greatness. This warning seems puzzling. Why would the Kohanim, who devotedly served in the Beis Hamikdash, disregard the kadshei haklal? IT WAS THE HOLIEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR: Yom Kippur. The Tchebiner Rav, zt”l, was on his way home from shul. As he passed the Kahal Chassidim shul in his neighborhood of Shaarei Chesed, the sounds of song reached him. Inside sat a group of elderly Holocaust survivors, singing old marches and songs that they remembered from their cities and hometowns back in Europe. You could hear the longing and depth of feeling in their voices. The Tchebiner Rav, a Holocaust survivor himself who had lost most of his family and community al kiddush Hashem, understood what these men were feeling. He stopped mid-route and entered the shul. He sat down alongside the men and began to sing. The Rav joined them as they took a trip down memory lane, reminiscing over their past, their childhood homes and lost communities. An hour passed, and the Rav still sat, feeling along with the men and encouraging them with his presence. At one point, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, zt”l, walked past the shul. Looking inside, he was surprised to see the great Tchebiner Rav among those sitting and singing. Rav Shlomo Zalman shared a close relationship with the Rav. The two held deep discussions in learning, immersed in Torah and halacha. He was always blown away by the Rav’s brilliance and righ-

teousness. Surely, the greatest of geonim had more lofty things to do on this special night than spend his time in the company of these simple folk! What was the Rav doing, sitting and singing old marches? When Rav Shlomo Zalman went up to the Tchebiner Rav on Motzei Yom Kippur to exchange wishes for a gut, gebentched yahr as he customarily did, he asked the question that was burning within him: “Teach me, Rebbi! What was the Rav looking for in the company of those men on such an important night? I know that time is very precious to the Rav…” The Rav answered simply, “Indeed, I had a very different plan in mind when I left shul last night. I wanted to learn through Maseches Yoma — all ninety blatt — until the morning. But when I passed the neighborhood shul and heard the voices of these Yidden, Holocaust survivors who are broken in heart and soul, sitting together, encouraging themselves through marches and old songs they remembered from Europe, I asked myself: What would bring Hakadosh Baruch Hu a greater nachas ruach — If I complete Maseches Yoma or if I sit with these men to be mechazek them? “I knew what I had to do. This was my avodas hayom…” When Rav Shlomo Zalman heard this, he exclaimed in hu-

What would bring Hakadosh Baruch Hu a greater nachas ruach? mility: “I always wondered how come I am so far from the level of the Tchebiner Rav. I always try to do what Hakadosh Baruch Hu wants of me. “But, now, seeing the extraordinary middos and care that the Rav displays to every Yid, I understand from where he receives the siyata d’Shmaya for levels in Torah that know no bounds.” Indeed, that was the Tchebiner Rav, great in spirit, yet not too great to identify with the spirit of those less than him. * * * * * Reb Chaim Zeitchik, one of the great baalei mussar of the previous generation and a talmid of the Alter of Novardok, explains: Often, because of a person’s great madreigos, he can have a hard time understanding those who are on a lower level. It isn’t easy for him to relate to simpler Yidden, which causes him to view other people’s madreigos as “chullin” compared to his. This was the message Hakadosh Baruch Hu was telling the Kohanim. As servants of Hashem in the Beis Hamikdash, they should not look down upon the avodah of Klal Yisroel compared to their own. To the contrary, one who is on a higher, more-elevated level of kedusha should know, more than anyone, to value the kedusha and chashivus of every single person in Klal Yisroel. The Torah is teaching us that the greater a person is, be it in Torah, yiras Shamayim, tzidkus or kedusha, the more he must develop an ayin tov toward others. He should feel that even the physical needs of the person near him are as important as kadashim.

On the topic A guest once came to Reb Boruch’l of Mezhibuzh for Shabbos. He did lots of talking about himself, touting his own praises, and Reb Boruch’l did not show any honor to the fellow. He later explained to his chassidim: “We find that Shabbos honors its guests very much. When Rosh Chodesh falls on Shabbos, we read the haftorah of Rosh Chodesh. On Shabbos Chol Hamoed, we read the Krias HaTorah of yom tov. When yom tov. falls on Shabbos, Shabbos doesn’t give away only the kriah, but also the entire davening. “But there is one guest that Shabbos does not budge for: Rosh Hashanah. We do not blow shofar on Shabbos. Why? Because a guest who blows his own horn and makes a lot of noise is not one to be acknowledged.”

Suffern Tosses Yeshivah Parents Off School District Ballot The Suffern Central School District threw a pair of yeshivah parents off the ballot for its upcoming school board elections, leaving two public school candidates running unopposed in the May 17th vote. The Journal News reported that both Chaim Feig and Leiby Bruer were removed from the ballot after district officials said they didn’t meet the one-year residency requirement to serve on the school board. Feig, a Suffern resident, lived in Monsey until early October 2021, according to district officials, and offered no comments on the matter. Bruer questioned the district’s assertion that he lived within the confines of the East Ramapo Central School District from November 27, 2021, through March 19, 2022. “I have been a resident of the SCSD district since 2016, and I clearly qualify to be on the ballot,” wrote Bruer in an email. He acknowledged that his driver’s license showed him as registered at his children’s address for a short time, but said that he should not be disqualified based on that technicality. Both Feig and Bruer had said that they were running for seats on the school board to address busing problems plaguing yeshivah parents in the district. A statement issued by Bruer noted that the problems would only grow over the coming year, as the continually increasing nonpublic school population would remain unrepresented on the school board, which would include only public school parents. Currently, the Suffern Central School District allows for just

one bus per building for each nonpublic school, a policy that has created havoc for parents whose children’s schedules do not match the set busing times for their yeshivah. That rule was created approximately five years ago, and the district’s private school population has doubled since that time, with approximately a quarter of Suffern’s students currently enrolled in nonpublic schools.

Felder Bill Would Credit High Schoolers for Chesed Hours A bill sponsored by State Senator Simcha Felder giving students academic credit for chesed hours could be making its way to Governor Kathy Hochul’s desk, if it clears the Assembly. Senate Bill S3345 would give high schoolers the ability to use practical outside-the-classroom activities that “provide experience and knowledge in an academic discipline or trade” to satisfy their requirements “for successful completion of an academic course of instruction related to such experience.” Felder told Boro Park 24 that regular chesed hours would qualify under the bill. “Let’s say students visit sick people or elderly people for two or three hours a week,” said Felder. “Maybe other students shoveled snow for neighbors or performed other activities that were not ‘educational’ in the same way that classroom lessons are; those activities still provide a beautiful education in kindness that deserve credit.” Felder made it clear that he hoped his bill would shine a positive light on yeshivah curricula that include a focus on middos, chesed and morality during a time when private schools are facing intense scrutiny and potential government oversight in order to ensure that they provide their students with a substantially equivalent education to that offered in public schools, as required by state law. If approved, the kindness component would be equally applicable to public school students, and Felder acknowledged that classroom learning would still be very much a part of students’ educational careers. “Students who regularly perform chesed of whatever kind should be able to get academic credit toward graduation,” said Felder. “It would be wonderful to put some emphasis on learning how to perform acts of kindness as part of a child’s education.” Felder has tried to get the bill passed on several occasions over the last decade, most recently in June 2021 when it passed the Senate but failed to gain Assembly approval. It is being

sponsored in the Assembly by Assemblywoman Alicia Hyndman, but has yet to be included on the floor calendar.

State Offers Cooling Assistance as Summer Looms The dog days of summer may be less grueling for some New Yorkers, with $15 million in cooling assistance currently being offered to eligible residents who have no air conditioning in their homes. New York State’s Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance opened the application process last week through its Home Energy Assistance Program. Eligibility guidelines vary by family size, but according to the state, a family of four with an annual gross income of $62,983 would qualify for the program, which includes the cost of an air conditioner and installation. Previously, HEAP’s cooling program was open only to those who met the state’s income requirements and had a family member with a medical condition that would be exacerbated by the heat. The program is expected to serve up to 20,000 households. Assistance is available on a first-come, first-served basis under the program until funding runs out or August 31. Applications are being accepted locally on Mondays through Fridays at the Rockland County Department of Social Services on Sanatorium Road, which can be reached by phone at 845-364-3480 or 845-364-3485.

Sidelined by COVID, Hochul Urges New Yorkers To Get Vaccinated and Boosted With coronavirus rates inching up once again, Governor Kathy Hochul used her personal COVID diagnosis as an opportunity to remind New Yorkers to get their vaccines and their booster shots. Hochul announced that she tested positive for COVID on Sunday afternoon, telling her social media followers that she would be isolating and working remotely this week. She asked fellow New Yorkers to get their vaccines, boosters and COVID tests, and urged anyone who isn’t feeling well to stay home to prevent further spread of the virus. Hochul had no COVID symptoms, testing positive for the first time since the start of the pandemic on a routine test, reported Gothamist. Other high-profile elected officials that have contracted COVID in recent months include Hochul’s former second in command, Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin, who came down with the virus in late February, two months before tendering his resignation after being indicted on bribery charges, and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who tested positive last month. A spokesperson for Hochul said that those she has been in contact with, including New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, will be notified of her COVID status. Coronavirus rates have been rising in New York City, with the number of cases reported in recent weeks quadrupling since early March. 142

CHAPTER 9 RECAP: Zach learns that tomorrow’s edition of the Times has a front-page article accusing him of serious misconduct. The article is well-researched and carefully put together. Zach’s convinced he won’t be able to explain himself quickly enough to prevent his career from derailing. Even worse, the accusations seem to come from someone within Zach’s camp — and Zach is pretty sure he knows which of his “friends” sold him out…

Z

ach woke up in stages. He usually got up just before the alarm, sitting up in time to slap the button at the first hint of noise. Today, however, his body just twitched. Moments later, the alarm filled the room. It was a custom alarm that had three parts. First, a gentle tone of wind chimes tinkled pleasantly, and Zach had thirty seconds to whack the button before it switched to a symphonic overture. That began rather loudly, and gradually increased in volume over the next three and a half minutes. If that didn’t work, the alarm clock sent a signal to the giant theater speakers mounted in the corners of his room, and growling electric guitars blasted power chords loud enough to be heard downstairs. The off button was useless now. Zach had to hit a different button, set next

to the light switch by his door, in order to quiet the shrieking music. He’d only gotten to phase three twice before, once after an event that lasted all night, and another time when a dear friend was in the hospital. Yet here he was, music blasting loud enough to wake the dead, and he couldn’t move. Several minutes later, he dragged himself to a sitting position and forced his eyes to open. He stumbled to the door, hands over his ears, and punched the button too hard, scraping his knuckles. He had a headache. The sudden silence was oppressive. Next to his bed, his phone rang. He came back and checked the number. He didn’t recognize it. Probably a reporter. He’d give a statement later today, but right now he needed to wake up. He hit ignore.

By the time his call with Marty was over, Zach had only gotten three hours of sleep. He’d had worse nights, though not many. Besides, he wasn’t as young as he used to be. Or maybe the news last night had affected him more than he’d realized. Either way, he was a mess, and he couldn’t afford that right now. The last thing he needed was for paparazzi to find him looking bedraggled and unkempt. Zach plodded out of the room and took a brutally cold shower, choked down some coffee, and put on his best suit and tie. Yet another irony of politics: You had to dress well for your own execution. He’d hardly tightened the knot around his neck when the phone started to ring yet again. He let it ring and checked himself in the mirror. Clean. Tucked in. Put together. But right around the eyes, you saw the truth. Here was a man who was tired, harried, a little angry. Beaten. No! Not beaten. It was a setback, certainly. A horrible setback. But he would handle it. People had come back from worse. Worse people had come back from worse. Somehow he’d manage. Despite his best efforts, the man in the mirror slumped a little. He was hurting, no question. He knew where he had to go. But first he needed to get out of the house without the press seeing him. He wouldn’t accomplish anything if he was trailed all through town by those vultures. And there were probably a few right there on his front steps, hoping to snap pictures of the condemned man, to hear a few last words. He peeked through his blinds. Sure enough, a few reporters milled about casually, just waiting for him to come out. Fine. They could wait all day. He made a quick call. The man on the other end picked up immediately. Marty had probably phoned ahead. “Good morning, Mr. Ganz.” “Hey, Freddie,” Zach said. “You want to meet me at Camden and Church? I’ll be there in — ” he did a quick calculation “ — fifteen minutes.” “Sure, sure. Fifteen minutes. No problem.” “Thanks.” Zach hung up and walked into his backyard, checking the grounds carefully to make sure no-

body had snuck onto his property. All clear. He slipped across the back lawn, unlocked the back gate, and ducked through, shooting a quick look of contempt toward the front of the house. Honestly, boys, he thought. This ain’t my first rodeo. He’d had this gate installed years ago, just for situations like this. Willing himself to stay cheerful, he whistled a low tune as he relocked the gate, stuck his hands in his pockets, and started walking. * * * * *

But can we at least get some coffee?” “I heard that,” Chana said in Chaim Simcha’s ear. “Happy to bring coffee.” “Perfect.” He told her exactly what he would need, and where to find it,

off the record.” “O-kay…” Rick gave him a look that somehow managed to be both calm and defensive. “Now don’t be angry with me.” He stamped his feet to keep warm, but otherwise remained still. “It’s news, and I’ve got to report it.” “I’m not angry,” Zach lied. “It’s all a bunch of nonsense, though — and you’d have realized that if you’d bothered to call me.” He watched Rick carefully. Sure enough, a twinge of frustration crossed the reporter’s face as Zach spoke. Rick must have wanted to call Zach before running the piece. So who’d stopped him? “If it’s nonsense, tell me why,” Rick

suggested. “I’ll write it up, give you the chance to tell your side.” “I don’t see why giving you an exclusive would do anything for me,” Zach said coldly. “When I want to tell my ‘my side,’ I’ll call a press conference. I don’t need you for that.” He held his hands to the heat vent to combat the freezing air outside. “I came to ask you why Brian Cranston put you up to this. Any ideas?” Rick gave a start. “You know I can’t reveal my sources,” he protested. Bingo. “You just did, Rick.” If it hadn’t been Brian, Rick would have said so. A lack of denial was basically the same as a confirmation.

“It wasn’t Brian, as it happens,” Rick said flatly. “Too late.” Zach gave him a predatory smile. He knew better than to lose his temper, but it was happening all the same. “How long have we been friends, Rick? Ten years? Eleven?” Rick Moncharch sighed. “You know I have nothing but respect for you, Zach. But I gotta report the news.” “Well, here’s your next headline: Back-Stabbing Political Lowlife Finds Ally at the Times,” Zach growled. “See what you can do with that.” He signaled to Freddie, and the car pulled out of the parking lot.

He’d been trying to hold kupp, but his brother was blazing through Tosafos while he was still struggling with the Gemara. “What’s a kula?” Chaim Simcha stared at him, and a slow smile spread across his face. “You’re right! It shouldn’t be. I mean, sure it’s chayav, even with this chisaron. But l’maaseh, it’s still a chisaron, right? You can’t change that!” His brows knit together, and he leaned even closer to the page. “It’s a good question…” “If you say so,” Izzy mumbled. Chaim Simcha’s phone rang, but he didn’t seem to notice. He was slumped over the sefer now, completely rigid, his lips silently mouthing the words in front of him. Izzy smiled. His brother could remain like that for hours. He snatched the phone off the table and held it to his ear. “Hello?” “Rabbi? It’s Frank, the mechanic. Your car’s ready. I — ” “Oh, baruch Hashem,” Izzy whispered with relief. “This is Izzy, actually. I’ll tell him. Can you bring it up here?” “Not for a while,” Frank told him. “I’m tied down at the shop.” “All right,” Izzy said with a shrug. “We’ll cab over soon.” He hung up and regretfully tapped his brother on the shoulder. “Come on, Chaim. We have to pick up the car.” They got their coats on, cleaned up as best they could, and headed to the door. “So long, Morristown,” Izzy said happily as he flung open the door. Then he stepped backward with a start. A gust of freezing wind poured into the motel room. Along with it, one hand still lifted up to knock, came Zach Ganz. TO BE CONTINUED...

A MISSION, A V ISION — A ND EIGHT MEN W HO BROUGHT IT TO FRU ITION BY: SHEVY HOLLANDER

The Monsey View

It was 1852. The U.S. was flourishing, the railroad tracks laid out across the country now pathways of opportunity to its cities and states. An influx of immigration poured willing workers into factories and across the plains, and the country experienced an era of bounty. But things weren’t so perfect in the Jewish quarters. An increasing number of Jewish immigrants took up residence in the Lower East Side, and there, in the crammed conditions of the tenement apartments, they faced the dark side of mid-19th-century U.S. — hazardous working conditions and unhygienic living conditions, which brought about injuries and disease that spread like wildfire. And the meager means they subsisted on did not allow for the funds with which to obtain proper medical care. It was no wonder — and so very sad — that the average American lifespan at that time was just forty years.

eventy-two-year-old Sampson Simson had retired from his career in law and was now living on his homestead in Yonkers in Westchester County. It was a large estate, which according to Publications of the American Jewish Historical Society “extended from Palisade Avenue on the west to Saw Mill River on the east.” Simson, whom the publication described as an Orthodox Jew deSampson Simson voted to his morning services and being particular about having matzos baked in his own home, was not one to spend an idyllic retirement on his well-appointed rural estate. Instead, he would take the frequent bumpy carriage ride to the Lower East Side, where he poured his energy into establishing a hospital to assist his needy brethren in New York City. And so January of 1852 found Simson with another eight fellow Jews representing several charities taking upon themselves a mission to provide poor Jews with medical care. And together they incorporated The Jews’ Hospital of New York. Simson was elected president of the board, and he imme-

diately donated a parcel of land he owned on 28th Street, between 7th and 8th avenues — then a rural neighborhood far-removed from the present reality — upon which the hospital would be constructed. In 1853, a cornerstone was laid and construction began. At the beginning of 1855, as the hospital neared completion, Simson resigned from his position as president — and reJudah Touro fused to reconsider despite an entire committee that was set up for the sole purpose of getting him to change his mind. At that time, a $20,000 donation from Jewish philanthropist Judah Touro (the son of Isaac Touro, the famous chazan after whom Touro Synagogue is named) enabled the grand opening. And so The Jews’ Hospital, a four-story sectarian hospital providing medical services for the Jewish poor free of charge, opened its doors in 1855.

Let's

BUILD YOUR DREAM CLOSETS.

THE FIRST YEAR In its first year of operation, 216 patients were admitted to The Jew’s Hospital. Of these, only sixteen paid for their care; the other 200 received medical services free of charge, as per the mission of the hospital. Two babies were born during that first year. Mrs. Lichtenstein, the first woman to give birth in The Jews’ Hospital, named her son Isaac Touro to honor the philanthropist who enabled the opening of the hospital. The largest patient load at any given time that year was twenty-eight, and the slowest days had nine patients under the staff’s care. There were nine paid staff members that first year, among them two doctors. Just two years later after its

inauguration, Simson, the founding father of Mount Sinai Hospital, passed away. But his legacy lives on.

EXPANDING ITS REACH Though originally called The Jews’ Hospital and officially sectarian, the hospital accepted emergency patients from all affiliations. The majority, however, were immigrants. Just four years after its opening, the hospital was pressed into public service during the Civil War. As the rift between the North and South widened and war seemed inevitable, the hospital prepared beds and supplies to treat 67 soldiers in anticipation of casualties. The hospital was soon filled to capacity with Union soldiers injured at war. The 1863 Draft Riots saw another influx of wounded who were treated at the hospital. In light of this expansion of clientele (and to be eligible for governmental support) in 1866, The Jews’ Hospital relinquished its sectarian status and was renamed The Mount Sinai Hospital. Its mission remained unchanged — to provide medical services to those who could not afford to pay for it — and while the hospital did have some paying patients, its services were largely

dispensed free of charge.

MOVING UPTOWN Back in the 19th century, hospitals would specifically seek open land upon which to build, believing in the healthier atmosphere these surroundings provided. The next century, of course, proved the impossibility of that feat for an urban hospital, but in 1872, as the city’s growth encroached on the space surrounding Mount Sinai’s first location on the Lower East Side, the hospital board looked uptown for a new site. Soon the hospital moved to Lexington Avenue, on the site of twelve lots the city granted them between 66th and 67th streets. At three stories and a 110-bed capacity, the new Mount Sinai Hospital boasted a lab — in a coat closet. It was

large enough to fit only two pathologists at once, but a good deal of research emerged from these tiny quarters. It was a small beginning, but it was the catalyst for expert research the hospital would become known for down the road. Charity services like these were in high demand, and Mount Sinai Hos-

pital had a long waiting list of those seeking to be admitted. In 1875, a Dispensary, organized into four sections treating different types of non-emergency issues, was set up in the basement of the hospital. It included a pediatric clinic, which was a first for the nation. These outpatient services for those who could not afford to pay were meant to mitigate the hospital overcrowding by treating conditions before they would worsen and require in-hospital services. With a mission such as this to The entrance to the Mount Sinai treat the needy first, a sign was Hospital Dispensary, 1890 posted outside the Dispensary. “Poor people only treated here,” looked into having it removed. MOUNT SINAI’S CURRENT HOME The hospital moved to its current location in 1904, when the then brand-new tenpavilion hospital at 100th Street and Fifth Avenue was opened with 465 beds. From there, departments, services and buildings were soon added and improved, bringing healing and hope to decades of patients and their families.

Jonas Salk, of Polio vaccine fame, worked as a scientist physician at Mount Sinai after medical school. Dr. Abraham Jacobi, known as the father of American pediatrics, established the country’s first pediatric clinic in Mount Sinai Hospital.

A STREET BED FOR HOSPITAL BEDS Mount Sinai Hospital has the designation of being a series of buildings that have swallowed up two entire road beds, now spanning a continuous campus between Madison and Fifth Avenue — from 101st to 98th streets. While in 1904 Mount Sinai Hospital took up one entire square block between 100th and 101st streets, the board later purchased lots on the south side for expansions. In 1949, the actual street bed of 100th street was deeded to Mount Sinai by NYC. With the construction of the Guggenheim Pavilion, the road was there no more, instead turning into a plaza between the original hospital buildings and the new one. A similar story happened to make 99th street cease to exist between Madison and Fifth avenues — this time at the end of the 1950s during the construction of the Klingenstein Clinical Center, when the 99th street road bed was deeded to the hospital.

It

It was one of those randomly mild days in the midst of coat-worthy temperatures that neighbors began popping out of their homes like snow flowers, eager to bask in the rays of the sun and the warmth of friendly company. I found everyone gathered around one woman who was gesticulating emphatically. “You should have seen her face!” she exclaimed. “My cousin could barely open her eyes because they were so swollen, and all around her lips were crusty. I’ve never seen anything like it! Even though she’d just had a baby, she had to pick herself up and go to a doctor because she looked absolutely terrifying.” Meet impetigo, the skin infection that’s been making its rounds about our circles. (Better yet, don’t meet impetigo — at least not personally!) I caught up with Yael Pinn, PA, at Schweiger Dermatology Group in Suffern to discuss this infection and how to stop its spread. I recently heard some horror stories about impetigo. What is it, and are cases on the rise?

Impetigo is a very contagious skin condition, especially common among pediatric patients. We typically see its spread in places where there are lots of kids, such as in nurseries and day cares. Impetigo infections happen year round, but there are seasonal spikes, perhaps because of the changing weather and an uptick in itchy eczema flares. People with pre-existing skin conditions are at greater risk because the infection begins when bacteria enter a cut or a break in the skin. Impetigo can be caused by staph or strep. When should a person to suspect an impetigo infection?

There are two types of impetigo, bullous and non-bullous (blistering and non-blistering), though even the non-bullous form can present with small blisters. Inside the blisters is a honey-colored liquid. As soon as the skin starts to ooze and you see that yellow crusting, it’s important to have it looked at by a medical professional. There may be other symptoms, because impetigo can present differently in every individual. Some get just blisters and oozing, while others have itching and swollen lymph nodes. Most cases of impetigo are mild or moderate, but severe cases can make one feel ill and cause the patient to have fever or lethargy. How do you treat impetigo?

Most of the time I prescribe topical antibiotics, though an oral antibiotic is preferred if the outbreak covers a larger body surface area. Although I typically do not perform a bacterial culture since the diagnosis is obvious and made clinically, I can always start a patient on a topical such as mupirocin ointment and switch to an oral antibiotic if the patient does not show an adequate response to topicals alone. Usually the oral drug of choice is Amoxicillin or Keflex, but when I see a really extensive case of impetigo in a patient with a history of recurrent bacterial infections, we might use antibiotics that cover for MRSA. Are there any dangers with impetigo?

The greatest danger is leaving it untreated because it can lead to cellulitis, and the patient can become very ill. They can develop systemic symptoms such as fever and, chas v’shalom, become septic. That can be incredibly dangerous. Long-standing, ongoing, extensive infection can also lead to kidney damage and brain infection. It’s important for impetigo to be treated promptly and correctly. You mentioned that impetigo is very contagious. How can we reduce the spread?

It’s really important to treat the condition almost like an infestation. Because kids touch each other and others’ clothing, and some families even share towels or put kids to sleep in the same bed, parents need to be aware that these can all spread the infection. If we suspect a child has impetigo, we are careful to tell parents to launder everything at high heat and to practice good hand hygiene. We want to make sure the infection won’t be transferred to other family members. Keeping fingernails trimmed, keeping the body clean with soap and water, and covering insect bites or cuts with an over-the-counter antibiotic cream and gauze are also methods to prevent infection. And it’s extremely important to keep your child home from school if they have an infection so they don’t pass it on! Are there any natural remedies to help with the symptoms?

Sometimes the areas are very crusty and weepy. I tell patients to remove the crust and soak the skin in a solution of 1 tablespoon white vinegar to a pint of water. They can do this for 15 to 20 minutes to stop the oozing. Alternatively, they can buy Domeboro or Burrow’s solution from the pharmacy. These work well for any type of blistering rash or poison ivy. Wishing everyone an infection-free summer! 202

People are always on the lookout for a quick fix to feel better about themselves. Well, your search is officially over! Studies have shown that being kind to others boosts your serotonin and dopamine levels, aka your feel-good hormones. Who would know this best? Why, doctors, of course! After all, the medical field revolves around helping people, and perhaps that’s why many professionals in the medical field stand out for their kindness and for going the extra mile for their patients. 214

BEAUTIFUL BANDAGES When a newborn baby needs surgery, it can be scary — very scary. Big incubators with bright lights; long, drab hallways; beeping machines; and the urgent, hushed atmosphere. But for the parents of newborn Witt McFrederick, all that faded away thanks to his surgeon Dr. Robert Parry. Witt was born with ruptured intestines and needed emergency surgery soon after birth. When his parents finally saw their baby after an intense surgery to repair his intestines, they noticed a beautifully drawn picture on the bandages across his little tummy. After asking around, they found out that the pediatric surgeon who had just worked on their son, Dr. Parry, had taken the time after surgery to draw and cut out designs for their baby’s bandages, just to make them smile. Dr. Parry first started creating designs on his patients’ bandages when he was interning at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. A surgeon there would cut out hearts and sharks and put them onto the bandages of his pediatric patients. At first Dr. Parry was confused by his mentor’s actions, but after seeing the reaction of the patients and how it distracted them from their pain, he decided to follow suit. He had always enjoyed doodling, and quickly moved on from simple hearts. He started drawing things that were more personalized

A little girl who wanted a burger but wasn’t allowed to eat anything woke up after surgery to find a burger drawn on her bandages. The mother of another patient, Heather Vincent, recalls finding a drawing of a popular action figure on her three-year-old son’s bandages after he had several tumors removed. She remembers how overwhelming it was to see her son with tubes coming out of his nose lying silently in the ICU. A

MAZEL TOV! My friend Dini shared how her mother had taken one of her siblings to their family pediatrician around a month before her wedding. While speaking with the frum doctor, her mother mentioned that Dini, who had been a patient at that practice since she was a baby, would be getting married in a month’s time. The doctor congratulated the family on their upcoming simcha and continued with the exam. A month later, when the family arrived home from the wedding in the middle of the night, the light on the answering machine was flashing. When they pressed the button to play the message, they were surprised to hear the voice of their pediatrician. “Hi, Family Stein! It’s your pediatrician! I just wanted to wish you mazel tov on Dini’s wedding!” The phone call took less than a minute of the doctor’s time, but Dini’s family was so touched by the gesture. The call conveyed the doctor’s thoughtfulness and care, as she had to mark down the date in advance and remember to place the call. It was little actions like this that always showed them how much the doctor cared about her patients.

nurse stopped by and pointed out the drawing hidden under the hospital gown. “It was an instant happy distraction,” she said. Over the years, Dr. Parry has drawn superheroes, flowers, princesses, and everything in between. He estimates that he has left drawings on the bandages of more than 10,000 patients! The most remarkable part of this story is that it shows us how just a small, almost silly, gesture can make such a big difference for little patients in pain. Kindness doesn’t have to be big and dramatic; more often than not, it’s the small things that make all the difference.

LITTLE LULLABIES Aubree Lynn Rosenberger was a tiny preemie with a rare chromosomal disorder that had her in the NICU for the first few months of her life. Her concerned parents didn’t leave her side for months, waiting and worrying as their tiny baby fought for her life. After more than a half year of being in the hospital, Aubree’s parents were forced to return to work and move on with their life outside of the hospital. But how could they possibly leave their newborn daughter alone? Enter NICU therapist Dr. Hanna Ivey-Bush. Dr. Ivey had been working closely with the Rosenbergers, and she had an innovative idea. She had grown up in a musical household and knew her way around a guitar and a recording studio. Dr. Ivey set up a makeshift recording set in the hospital and had Mrs. Rosenberger record stories and lullabies for her daughter. The good doctor accompanied the mother on her guitar, and together they recorded a few of Mrs. Rosenberger’s favorite nursery rhymes, stories and songs. Whenever Aubree’s parents had to be away from her bedside, the nurses would turn on the recording so she could hear her mother’s voice. They reported that, amazingly, Aubree would always open her eyes and turn her head toward the sounds. She obviously recognized her mother’s voice, and the doctors saw how constantly hearing those recordings helped little Aubree’s development. A few months later, Au-

HELPER’S HIGH The science world has coined an official term for the good feeling you get after doing a random act of kindness. They call it the “helper’s high” (nice alliteration, scientists). Since our happy hormones have been proven to lower blood pressure levels and strengthen the immune system, doing acts of kindness has great health benefits. A large study was done on a group of people who were volunteering often and those who weren’t. The study found that there was a 44% lower chance of early death among those who were volunteering — lower, even, than that of people who exercise four times a week! So get out there and do some chesed! And make sure to thank your doctor the next time you go for a visit.

bree had made incredible progress and was finally ready to go home. The story of Dr. Ivey’s innovative idea quickly spread to hospitals across America, and doctors began reaching out to her to help them start this program in their NICUs. She helped set up mini recording studios in multiple NICUS, and thus Little Lullabies was born. The program is completely funded by donors and is now incorporated in many hospitals across America.

NURSE TURNED MOTHER Claire Mills was a nurse working long shifts in a Texas NICU ward. She was around babies all day long but didn’t have any of her own. Until she met little baby Jackson, who was born prematurely and weighed just three pounds. Jackson’s mother wasn’t doing well, and Claire spent hours at Jackson’s side, feeding him, soothing him, and taking care of him when his mother couldn’t. She developed a special bond with him from the start and looked forward to seeing him on the days she was on shift. After a few long weeks, Jackson had finally gained enough weight and made sufficient progress to be discharged. Sadly, it was clear to the hospital staff that his mother wasn’t capable of giving him the care he needed. She was still very sick and didn’t have the energy or resources to take care of a premature baby. The hospital social worker began looking for a family that could adopt Jackson and raise him as their own. In the meantime, Claire continued to care for the little boy in the hospital and hoped that he would end up in a loving and caring home. A few days later, Jackson’s mother called Claire out of the blue. In a trembling voice, she asked if Claire would consider adopting Jackson. “I’ve seen how you take care of him in the NICU with such love and care, and I think you would be a great mother to him,” she said. After her initial shock, Claire jumped at the chance to adopt a little baby of her own. Jackson moved in with Claire, and she officially adopted him a few months later. They’ve been a family ever since.

* Little do we know that what we’re dealing with is a host of similar feelings of hurt, guilt, helplessness, and frustration deep in our core.

Emotional pain functions like a rope, with new experiences adding additional knots These are the after-glows of adverse emotions which began piling up and continued to grow throughout the years. They continue to live on in our consciousness, where they remain on the lookout for the familiar. Any occurrence that brings up similar emotions triggers them to rise. The resulting experience can be as overwhelming as baffling. ‘What’s wrong with me?’ is only part of the self-blame game our mind is playing with us. Most of it plays out in the background and we’re hardly aware of that emotional eruption in a barely accessible part of our heart. * The key worth keeping in mind is that any emotional pain we’re experiencing in the moment is the tip of the iceberg running deep in the consciousness of our past. Those hard, forgotten feelings should be dealt with. And it starts with acknowledging their existence and allowing them to be. Facing them is the first step towards healing. It's a step that covers 50 percent or more of the journey.

Riding in the back of an ambulance is no fun (even if some kids may think so!), but this hospital-on-the-go saves lives every minute, stabilizing patients and administering oxygen and medication while transporting those in need of emergency medical care.

Ambu-where?

Bright Whites

Where exactly does the word come from? Like many words in the English language, ambulance is derived from a Latin root word. Ambulare means “to walk or move about.” (Does perambulate sound familiar?) The word comes from the primitive carts used on battlefields of yesteryear to transport injured patients. During the Civil War, those carts were called ambulance wagons.

Ambulances are often painted white, for maximum visibility, since white reflects sunlight better than any other shade. Yellow, red and orange are also used, both for their vividness and for the warnings often associated with those colors.

ECNALUBMA Ever wonder why the front of the ambulance has the word “Ambulance” emblazoned backward? It’s a warning to drivers ahead of the ambulance in case of emergency, so they can read it in their rearview mirrors.

Small Size Saves Lives The Angels in Orange: While the charming, narrow winding streets of Eretz Yisroel are beautiful, they’re also notorious for their traffic snarls. It’s annoying anytime, but can become truly life-threatening in an emergency. Enter the Israeli United Hatzalah’s fleet of around 1,000 ambucycles — motorcycles equipped with a fully stocked first aid kit on the back. This allows the first responder to reach the victim or patient in only 90 seconds (in city centers) to 3 minutes!

Sound of the Sirens Whatever the Weather What happens if there is, chas v’shalom, an emergency in the middle of a snowstorm? EMTs brave inclement weather in 4x4 ambulances. Saving lives can’t wait for snow plows!

Air Care For remote emergencies or severe injuries or illness, helicopters, choppers or private jets can save the day. Incidentally, transporting patients via air started back when the French Army used hot air balloons to transport sick and injured soldiers. (Yup, during wartime again.)

A Tragic Paradox Can ambulances cause traffic accidents? Unfortunately, yes. Many factors contribute to this sorry statistic, including higher driving speeds, often under dangerous conditions. Interestingly, it seems that a big percentage of ambulance accidents happen when the lights and sirens are on.

Keep clapping your hands over your ears when an ambulance roars down the street, lights flashing and sirens blaring. That siren’s volume can reach up to 140 decibels! That’s as loud as a commercial plane’s takeoff. (FYI, 85 decibels can cause permanent damage to a person’s hearing.)

Spotlight on Our Heroes Putting aside all other emergency vehicles, Hatzoloh is truly in a class of its own. Hatzoloh’s gleaming ambulances are filled with state-of-the-art equipment, the best that money can buy. Who knows better than us that you can’t put a price on life? Some facts about these vehicles of rescue:

Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland’s fleet consists of 18 ambulances plus 2 additional emergency vehicles, earning it the distinction of being the largest in the United States. Each Hatzoloh ambulance consists of a Ford chassis (the load-bearing skeleton of a vehicle) and a Braun body (the “box”).

Want to dedicate one of these lifesaving legends in memory of a loved one? It costs between $250,000 and $300,000 to sponsor an ambulance that helps save hundreds of lives during its lifespan of approximately 10 years.

Some of the expensive, top-of-the-line equipment found in a Hatzoloh ambulance: • Electric stretchers (which move up and down with the press of a button) • A Stryker power load (which retails for $50,000!), upon which the stretcher is mounted • CPR Thumper machine, which delivers precise and uninterrupted chest compressions for patients in cardiac arrest Special thanks to Mr. Birnbaum and Rabbi Golding from Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland for contributing to this article.

• Paramedics have access to OR (operating room) level information right in Hatzoloh of Rockland’s ambulances with their 12 lead EKG heart monitors
