PROBLEMATIC PROGRAM POINTS

(Re: To The Finish Line, Issue 340) Thank you for your humorous column on Pesach cleaning. I don’t know anyone (family, neighbors, workmates, friends) who can follow the advice recommended. Most of the people I know don’t live in the type of homes you seem to be describing. It seems the writer has cleaning help who deep-cleans her entire house at least once a month. Her children surely play with only one toy or game at a time — in the playroom, on a table. Her toys obviously never end up in the kitchen, her books never get read during suppertime, and her cars and trucks probably never get ridden at all if she says that they should just be wiped down. And the playthings she owns surely only include Lego, Clics, some books and a few games. Why else would she recommend cleaning all of the following in the allotted time? We’ve got books with plastic pages that get read and are not only decorative pieces; about fifty games with approximately one hundred cards each; big trucks and cars with tiny crevices; various mentchies, ZOOB, Playstix, Magna-Tiles, Bristle Blocks, dollhouse furniture, play food and dishes; and the myriad other things in my playroom that can’t get classified into a specific category. Furthermore, Sara responded to a letter writer that she is not covering spring cleaning, only the basics for Pesach. If so, I was wondering why the linen closet has to be done altogether if the only things kept there are clean linens and towels — and why does the linen have to be refolded? There are no crumbs between the folds (except if she eats cookies while folding the linen). And since when do curtains hanging on the windows have to be washed for Pesach? If she is concerned about chometz, she can just shake them out. If she wants to wash them

to freshen up the room, no problem — I do that too. But that’s specifically spring cleaning! These recommendations give us unwanted and unneeded stress (this time of year is stressful enough) to try to emulate other people’s lifestyles and fit into a certain stereotype that’s impossible. Next time, please provide guidelines for those of us with smaller homes. Thanks for enabling me to voice my opinion. With best wishes to The Monsey View for hatzlacha to continue doing the amazing work of providing quality, kosher reading material that doesn’t require a proofread before allowing my children to read. Wishing you all a kosheren, freilichen Pesach, and an easy time getting there, Mrs. E. SARA GOLDSTEIN RESPONDS: Thank you for your letter! It definitely sounds like you’re taking these articles very seriously and personally! Just to set the record straight, I don’t have any cleaning help at all, and buying toys is one of my hobbies. I always, always tell my clients that, baruch Hashem, we have Yiddishe homes to run, and so there is no point in seeking perfection as it just sets us up for disappointment. Reading articles in a publication is all about taking out of it whatever works for you, and leaving out what is not applicable. If you ever have a question about how to make something work for you, I will gladly answer it. Happy reading and cleaning!

RE: IN HIS HANDS

(Inbox, Issue 340) Dear Considerate Housewife, I read your letter, and all I can say is, “Wow! Mi ke’amcha Yisroel.” I have always been of the exact same opinion and felt the same responsibility toward the community. In fact, I did actually lose my cleaning help on countless occasions due to my refusal to agree to their requested raises. Though it would not keep me from doing what’s right and believing that Hashem will take care of me, I’ve always felt a little off-balance when seeing how everybody around me just keeps falling for the trap and agreeing to the accepted pay rate that keeps on climbing despite my efforts. It was so reassuring to see that there are others who do the same, and even if we can’t stop the incline completely, we can at least “flatten the curve” somewhat. I also hope that your letter made the desired impact on its readers and that our fellow housewives will consider stopping this practice of self-sabotage. If you truly believe that your cleaning help was predestined from Hashem on Rosh Hashanah, it will help you stand your ground. Even if you do end up losing that help, you will not have any regrets THE MONSEY VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS.

AN ISOLATED EXPERIENCE?

(Re: To The Finish Line, Issue 338) Thank you for your adorable and inspiring Pesach cleaning series. I agree that some of the stuff in my bedroom doesn’t belong there — like all of our photo albums — but with the limited closet space we have, there’s no other place to keep them. So obviously, if, like me, you stay stuck “cleaning” albums (i.e., enjoying them), cleaning the room will take more than four hours! And I didn’t see any mention at all of going through the husband’s closet areas and furniture, which in my case takes an official appointment with my husband where we go through his stuff to see what he still wears/needs and what can go. (Anyone else like that? Am I the only one?) Last, do others out there also have a drawer with all types of memorabilia — cards, articles, first graders’ shanah tovah cards, poems you wrote and received for all types of occasions, etc. — that only gets organized once in four years? Is this the year to actually sort through all of that? If so, I need a full hour just for that! And if I indulge myself and read through all that — which my mother used to say she’s saving to read for when she’s 80 — then I may need the full four hours allotted for the bedroom just for that. (No, I’m not 80 years old yet, and neither is my mother.) Thanks again for pushing us all forward in a fun way! B.U. SARA GOLDSTEIN RESPONDS: The four-hour master bedroom cleanup was the topic of discussion this week wherever I went! I will soon refer to myself as the FourHour Master. As a basic Pesach cleanup, four hours is enough. Now obviously if you’re going through pictures and getting nostalgic from finding your 154

first baby tooth, it might take until Seder night. It’s okay if you don’t have room for albums anywhere else but your bedroom. We all work with the space we have.

OFF-SEASON STORAGE?

(Re: To The Finish Line, Issue 338) I am very excited to be following your Pesach cleaning column! I love the clear, easy-to-follow instructions, and the fun reading. Now here is my question. You write that all off-season clothing from the master closet belongs in storage. Am I supposed to take all of my summer dresses and skirts and put them into a large container for storage? I don’t have extra hanging space anywhere else in my home. If you’ll suggest I keep them hanging in my closet, do I keep them in one corner together or separate them by type, such as by hanging all robes, skirts, etc., along with the winter ones? Thanks for your help! G.G. SARA GOLDSTEIN RESPONDS: Thank you for your feedback! Keep off-season things off to the side. Or, perhaps, if you have extra shelf space on top of your closet, fold the items and store them there.

A MASTERPIECE

(Re: Textured Art, Issue 337) Thank you so much for the canvaspainting feature! My daughter, Zeldy, age 7, couldn’t wait to earn the canvas, brushes and acrylic paints she used for this project. This is her masterpiece. Mrs. Silberman

PARSHAS SHEMINI Purely Kosher

In Parshas Shemini we come across the first warnings against eating forbidden foods. The Torah repeats the warnings multiple times, in a number of ways. Why is the repetition and emphasis necessary?

FOR A SHORT WHILE after World War II, Rav Chatzkel Levenstein, zt”l, the legendary mashgiach of Mir, lived in America before moving to Eretz Yisroel. One day, his talmid Rav Yisrael Zev Gustman was sitting in an outer room when Rav Chatzkel’s personal physician stopped by. “I am worried for the rabbi’s health,” the doctor said. “It is important for him, in his fragile state, to eat a healthy diet, and I am afraid that the rabbi’s refusal to eat meat or drink milk is dangerous for him.” Rav Gustman listened, and when he later spoke with Rav Chatzkel, he tried to uncover the reason for the Rav’s refusal to do so. “I understand why the Mashgiach would be afraid to rely on an unfamiliar shechitah,” he said, “but what could be the matter with milk? The local dairy farm is run by a frum man known for his yiras Shamayim. What kind of halachic problems could there be already?” Rav Chatzkel replied, “The truth is, I know the milkman is ehrlich, but still, there is something about his business that bothers me… Why did the kashrus organization of the Satmar Rebbe find it necessary to certify his production? Why would a reliable, frum man need a hechsher? I thought that perhaps there may have been shailos in the past and that’s why the Satmar Rebbe felt there was a need to send down mashgichim… For this reason, I am not interested in drinking the milk produced there.” Rav Gustman decided to go down to the Satmar Rav to discuss this. In response to the question, the Rebbe smiled and said, “The milkman is in fact known to be an ehrliche Yid and a tzaddik, perhaps even greater than the mashgichim I send down to observe the production.”

“If so, why does the dairy farm need a hechsher?” Rav Gustman asked. “It’s simple,” the Rebbe replied. “From a business perspective, the proprietor had decided that a hechsher would be beneficial; he knew he would be able to sell greater quantities of milk than he would without the hashgacha. He does not, chas v’shalom, need the hashgacha because of questionable stan-

dards.” Yet even after Rav Chatzkel heard the Satmar Rav’s explanation, he still refused to drink the milk. “According to the doctor, it is a matter of pikuach nefesh,” Rav Gustman said, using all his convincing powers. “Perhaps it would be worthwhile for the Mashgiach to pay a visit to the dairy farm to personally check it out?” Rav Chatzkel shook his head. “Should I run around the streets of America for a little bit of milk?” In the early days of American Jewry, many Europeans were wary of America, where the streets were known to be paved with gold. They feared the pursuit of money and luxuries, and perceived even the stones of American streets to be treif. Thus, Rav Chatzkel was afraid that spending extra time on the streets would negatively influence him. But Rav Gustman did not give up. He offered to walk Rav Chatzkel, who’d keep his eyes closed, until the dairy farm. Finally, Rav Chatzkel agreed to the plan. At the farm, Rav Chatzkel spoke with the owner, the workers, and the mashgichim, and he inspected every corner. Finally, he determined that the milk was indeed produced to the highest standards of kashrus, and he began to drink from the milk on a daily basis. * * * * * The Torah wishes to impress upon us this very magnitude of care. Eating purely is a foundational part of our kedusha. The key to spiritual success in all areas of avodas Hashem is dependent on it.

Eating purely is a foundational part of our kedusha. The Gemara (Yoma 39a) explains the pasuk, “V’hiskadeshtem v’heyisem kedoshim — And you shall sanctify yourselves and be holy” (Vayikra 11:44), by saying that when a person sanctifies himself even just a little bit, he is assisted and sanctified greatly from Above. Likewise, if a person is mekadesh himself in This World, he will be full of kedusha in Olam Haba. By repeating the warnings and prohibitions of eating only 100% kosher, the Torah encourages us to internalize the gravity of the matter and exert extra caution when eating — and thus merit extra zechusim.

Did You Know? The Abarbanel points out that the Torah does not prohibit certain foods because they are detrimental to our health; that would demote the Torah into a simple dietary manual on proper health and nutrition. Indeed, this can be proven by the fact that the gentiles who do consume animals and insects that are determined unfit by the Torah can remain strong and healthy. Instead, we come to realize that rather than promoting physical health, halacha promotes spiritual health. Eating certain foods would contaminate us spiritually, and we are therefore instructed to stay far away.

* * * * * Besides maintaining the purity of our hearts and neshamos, eating only kosher foods will grant us the zechus to taste the Shor Habor and Livyason when Moshiach comes.

E

veryone starts preparing for Pesach early. The matzah bakeries already heat their ovens before the first snow has fallen, and the chometz-phobics might start cleaning their bedrooms while their husbands have yet to finish disassembling the sukkah. The yeshivah boys count down to Pesach practically all winter, and the grocery store managers are deep in Pesach orders before the Purim stock even sells.

But nobody starts as early as Yanky Roth, the beloved owner of Mefoar Judaica in Boro Park. As the pioneer of the now-popular embroidered Seder sets, and the trendsetter in this niche, the task of creating each year’s designs, ordering the select materials, and ensuring that the high-end products are stocked before the season, take him all around the calendar year. And it shows. Mefoar has continued to cement itself at the top of the Pesach gift-giving world, with their majestic sets of Seder pillows, matzah bags and afikomen bags being the present of choice gifted to husbands, chasanim, in-laws and friends. This year, one of the new concepts is a show-stopping design that combines a minimalist modern approach with vintage patterns and drawings. In prePesach sales so far, it has been selling out in record numbers.

Mefoar Means Magnificent Today, it’s hard to imagine that these embroidered Seder night sets are a relatively new phenomenon. But it was Mefoar who first introduced the item to the market. Known as the innovators of the Judiaca world, Mr. Roth has seen his once-modest establishment take the industry by storm and reset the standards of what customers have come to expect. Mefoar traces its heritage to Mr. Roth’s ninety-year-old uncle in Eretz Yisroel who was among the first to produce Seder night products, and who was the one who first taught him the ropes. Of course, the firm has since taken things to the next level and introduced magnificent, complete Seder sets, and they

keep expanding to include a wider array of Seder night items. Recent versions have also come to include matching Hagaddos for husband and wife. “Our in-house team contracts with four leading experts in their respective fields before we can launch our new Seder sets. The overall design, fonts and typesetting for the

words, linen and stitching all require involvement of the most skilled professionals to meet the levels of elegance that Mefoar represents,” Yanky tells us. “We work through no less than seventy designs before we settle on the design or two that will adorn Sedarim around the community.” While many would assume that the work in developing these products primarily boils down to design, there are many additional factors that go into creating a majestic Mefoar set. The linen is imported from Portugal and is of the best quality found in the market today.

The Monsey View

179

The stitching is done in a way that keeps the entire item snowwhite so that it all matches seamlessly with the Seder table linens. And the craftwork is of the highest caliber so that it can stand the test of time.

Bringing Zman Cheiruseinu to Life The proliferation of embroidered Seder night sets has made these items synonymous with cheirus, in a way that one can now dare to suggest rivals in stature the silver found on every Jewish table. And everyone is catching on. Mr. Roth shares amusingly that last Erev Pesach before the zman he received a frantic call from a middle-aged man who told him that he must purchase a new set immediately. Upon inquiring what happened, the caller shared that his young son-in-law showed up for Pesach with his new set, and felt embarrassed to use it while his shver would be using his old matzah tash, so he placed his own set at his father-inlaw’s seat, necessitating the need for an emergency purchase.

180

The Monsey View

To illustrate just how much these sets mean to many, Yanky told us of a heartbreaking yet heartwarming episode. There was a man scheduled to spend Pesach in a bikur cholim house near one of the Manhattan hospitals where he was receiving treatment. Mefoar, as they do every year, provided chesed organizations with sets to share with those who unfortunately can’t be home for Pesach — one of which this Yid received. Right before yom tov, this man’s condition took a turn for the worse, and he was admitted to the hospital, all alone, with no family members permitted to visit. On Seder night, he found himself gravely ill in bed, unable to eat, drink or perform any of the Seder rituals. Too weak to do anything but cry, he asked the nurse to please prop his head under the Seder pillow that he had been given so that he could at least feel that he’s partaking in the Leil Seder that every other Yid is experiencing. And so he lay in the oncology ward on an embroidered Seder pillow, yearning for better days ahead when he could enjoy it in good health. From the hospital room to the dining room, and from the young chasan to the elderly Seder night veteran, Mefoar has ushered in an era of royalty and elegance. Leaning back with that cup of red wine, families now sing the songs of gratitude and Geulah surrounded by manifestations of cheirus, Mefoar-style.

Plan To Make Daylight Saving Time Permanent Passes Senate Those tedious spring and fall clock changes may soon become relegated to the history books now that the United States Senate has approved a bill that would keep the nation’s clocks set to daylight saving time. Politico reported that Florida Senator Marco Rubio’s Sunshine Protection Act passed the Senate last Tuesday, just two days after the latest clock change. Several senators said that the bill was passed so quickly that they were totally unaware of its passage. According to The Week, the bill cleared the Senate without the usual delays under a process known as unanimous consent, which allows any unopposed bill to be passed without any debate or votes. While unanimous consent is often requested, it very rarely comes into practice, since once lawmakers are notified of an upcoming bill, objections are typically voiced. For reasons that remain unclear, some senators were caught completely by surprise by the passage of the Sunshine Protection Act and weren’t even aware of the request for unanimous consent. Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton said he would have opposed the bill had he known about it in advance. That sentiment was echoed by Delaware Senator Chris Coons. “It’s literally an issue my staff and I had never discussed, and they made an assumption that I don’t really care about daylight saving time and I don’t know if I do,” said Coons. Rubio said that he hopes that Congress will pass the bill quickly so that it can be signed into law by President Joe Biden, calling it “an idea whose time has come.”

The Sunshine Protection Act would likely not take effect until November 2023 in order to accommodate industries including airlines and train travel whose schedules would be impacted by the change. But not everyone is on board with the Sunshine Protection Act, with delayed winter sunrises in northern states located above the 42nd parallel resulting in children going to school in total darkness in the winter, reported NBC News. States that would be completely or partly impacted by the bill include Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington and Wyoming. Differences in geography would also result in sunrise times varying across the country. This past January 1, sunrise in Boston was at 7:13 a.m., while the sun came up at 8:01 a.m. in Detroit. Factoring a permanent daylight saving time into the equation, sunrise in Detroit would not happen until 9:01 a.m., leaving some referring to the bill as the “Rising in Darkness Act.” Similar realities exist on the West Coast, with the sun coming up at 6:51 a.m. in Las Vegas this past January 1, but at 7:57 a.m. in Seattle. The change in timing would have Seattle staying dark until nearly 9 a.m. “How are people going to feel at 7 o’clock in the morning in December when they put their kids out on the street to catch the school bus and it’s dead flat dark?” wondered House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer. “It’s great for Florida,” said Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker. “They’re in the right longitude and latitude. There are kids in Minnesota and Nebraska and Montana who are going to catch the school bus in the pitch dark, and I worry about that.” A previous attempt to eliminate daylight saving time during the energy crisis of 1974 ended ahead of schedule, after a massive public outcry regarding the safety of children who were heading out to school in darkness on cold winter mornings.

State Lawmakers Call for Gas Tax Relief With fuel prices rising sharply from week to week, New York State legislators are proposing that the 48-centsper-gallon gas tax be suspended from May 1 through the end of the year. State Senator Peter Oberacker and State Senator Fred Akshar sponsored the New York Gas Tax Relief Act to provide New Yorkers with some relief at the pump. Gas prices have increased by more than one dollar per gallon over the past year. 190

The Monsey View

March 23, 2022

www.themonseyview.com · 845.600.8484

“Rising prices at the pump hurt our small businesses and lead to across-the-board cost increases for consumers,” said Oberacker. “Inflation is at a 40year high, and action is needed to help businesses and consumers alike as we work to recover from the COVID pandemic.” Akshar criticized both the state and federal governments for being out of touch with their constituents’ needs. “Families and small businesses are struggling like never before with unprecedented cost increases in nearly every facet of their lives — especially at the gas pump — while our leaders in Albany and Washington seem more interested in pleasing their political interests than easing the burdens on everyday New Yorkers,” said Akshar. “This legislation puts our people’s economic survival first.” The legislation would also ensure that all monies collected from gas taxes would be directed to the state’s Dedicated Highway and Bridge Trust Fund. A report by New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli found that just 17 cents per dollar has been going toward its intended destination — capital projects — a phenomenon that was also identified in 2009 and 2014. “This highway robbery still goes on every time we fill up at the pump,” said Oberacker. “Albany politicians who have allowed this deception to continue need to own up to the public.” CBS News reported that relief could come if Governor Kathy Hochul approves the measure in the upcoming state budget, which is due on April 1. But Hochul has already expressed doubts about the plan, saying that there is no guarantee that a tax break to fuel wholesalers will benefit consumers and that she is exploring other solutions, including accelerating tax cuts for middle-class New Yorkers. Republicans have called on Hochul to use the state’s rainy day fund to make a gas-tax suspension a viable option. “I urge her to look out the window,” said State Senator Alexis Weik. “It’s raining in our economy right now. It’s time to use that money.”

Ramapo Continues Fine-Tuning Zoning Changes To Allow Housing and Businesses in Northeast Corridor A public hearing held last week via Zoom gave Ramapo residents an opportunity to weigh in on proposed zoning changes that would affect the town’s most undeveloped area, which borders Clarkstown, Pomona and Haverstraw. Plans for the Northeast Corridor, as the parcel of land has become known, have been underway for some time after Ramapo decided to focus its zoning efforts on individual subsections in lieu of the traditional master plan that covered 192

The Monsey View

March 23, 2022

the town in entirety. The study process has brought to light varying differences among its residents, with some favoring additional housing and businesses while others preferring to maintain the area’s open space and undeveloped beauty. The pre-Purim meeting had Town Supervisor Michael Specht presenting the town’s plan, which focuses on four spots known as opportunity areas, reported Rockland County Business Journal. These locations include the north side of Route 202 adjacent to the Town of Haverstraw; Route 202 from the Palisades Parkway to South Camp Hill Road; the former Minisceongo Golf Course on Pomona Road; and a stretch of New Hempstead Road just east of the Palisades Parkway. Proposed plans for an additional opportunity area on Route 45 from South Mountain Road to Old Route 202 have been scrapped. Under the Northeast Corridor plan, Ramapo is proposing flexible overlays that could be used on any parcel of at least 20 acres within an opportunity area, which would allow a combination of residential, commercial, office, retail or other land uses, if approved by the town. According to town planner Jaclyn Hakes, density would be capped within the overlay areas, and Ramapo would set “reasonable planning parameters.” Additionally, a proposed commercial corridor district could potentially be created on Route 202 and would run from the Pomona border on the west to the Haverstraw border to the northeast. Specht said that the latest iteration of the Northeast Corridor plan has been two and a half years in the making, with compromises made along the way to accommodate area residents. “We have listened to comments and have eliminated some of the zoning changes to keep the residential character intact,” said Specht. Ramapo resident Jordan Most was one of those who advocated for more housing in Ramapo, saying that there was a lack of appropriate housing for young families, empty nesters and seniors. “The children we’ve raised here want to come back to the community, but they can’t,” said Most. “And at the same time, my wife and I want to downsize. Where are we going to live, whether we buy or rent?” But others took a different view of the plan, particularly since a zoning change made by the Village of New Hemp-

stead could add hundreds of units to the town’s housing stock, including 150 units to be built on the 34-acre site that was once home to Matterhorn Nursery on Summit Park Road. The New Hempstead plan, which according to The Journal News is currently facing legal challenges, also opens the door to the possibility of more business and a hotel being built near the baseball stadium on Route 45. “We already have too much density for the resources we have,” said New Hempstead resident Alan Friedberg, adding, “We have a treasured natural area that we have to protect.” The town’s comment period for the project remains open through March 28, with another town hall hearing set for March 23.

Jewish Girls Ousted From Amsterdam Flights Last Summer Sue Delta/KLM A string of incidents that took place last summer has had a group of teenage girls suing KLM and Delta, saying that they were harassed and subjected to antiSemitic discrimination. The complaint was filed last week in the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of New York by a group of nineteen plaintiffs, most of whom come from the New York area. According to the complaint, airline personnel in Amsterdam reprimanded the girls for misbehavior on their flight from New York before they boarded a connecting flight to Vienna, with the pilot telling the girls that he didn’t want to fly them to Austria and would make an emergency landing if they didn’t cooperate. Hamodia reported that Delta/KLM personnel provided the tour group with no explanations and that the girls had never been warned by the flight crew that they were causing any problems on the first leg of their trip. The girls encountered trouble again on their return flight home in Amsterdam, with Delta/KLM personnel alleging that they hadn’t followed mask regulations. The group was banned from their connecting flight to New York and were left stranded in the airport overnight. They were forced off their flight to New York the next morning because of a seat swap orchestrated by another passenger just hours before Shabbos, leaving askanim scrambling to make arrangements for them for Shabbos. They flew home Sunday morning from Brussels on United Airlines without incident. A KLM spokesperson declined to comment on a pending lawsuit, noting only that passenger safety is the airline’s highest priority and that no misbehaviors are tolerated. A Delta spokesperson said only that compliance with safety measures is of paramount important and that the airline has a zero-tolerance discrimination policy. The lawsuit is seeking both compensatory and punitive damages in an amount to be determined during trial as well as other damages, fees and costs. March 23, 2022

CHAPTER 3 RECAP: While struggling with his malfunctioning car, Chaim Simcha tells his brother of a newly discovered manuscript from their great-grandfather, the Rebbe of Lodz. The Polish government wants Chaim Simcha’s help finding the manuscript’s rightful heir. Meanwhile, Zach Ganz, twice-time mayor of Morristown, New Jersey, gets an unexpected visit from two friends.

B

rian Cranston, Geordie Carmichael and Zach Ganz sat in plush chairs in Zach’s spacious living room, cups of wine on the coffee table before them. The picturesque fireplace (he’d chosen this home specifically for the fireplace) was lit, a gas fire burning cheerily over several pretty, but fake, logs. That was politics in a nutshell, Zach reflected. A lie to make people comfortable, but you were honestly getting things done behind the scenes, too. Doubtless many would argue with that analogy. But then again, many of them lied more often and got less done than Zach did. So their opinion didn’t hold that much weight for him. “What can I do for you fellas?” Zach asked pleasantly. Brian and Geordie were both longtime allies and friends. The fact that they’d shown up at his door, rather than simply calling, meant one of two things: Either they were here to discuss something off the record, or they wanted something they thought he might not be inclined to

provide. In that case, they had come to put pressure on him, which Zach thought was fine. He’d done it himself many times. It was all part of the game. “Vincent Cardone just put a bid on the contract for a new development project,” Brian explained. “It’s right outside the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge. You heard about it?” Zach grimaced inwardly. Vinnie Cardone? Really? “I’m familiar with the project,” he answered carefully. “What about it?” Geordie sipped his wine and made a dismissive gesture. “It’s really nothing,” he explained, “just that we promised him our support. And since you’re such good friends with Bobby Reynolds, who’s in charge of awarding the contract, we thought we’d ask you to put in a good word on Vincent’s behalf.” “Well, set your minds at ease, guys,” Zach said. He flashed an easy smile that didn’t fool anyone. “You don’t need my help, and Vinnie doesn’t need yours! I’m sure he gave the lowest

bid, just like always. He shouldn’t have any trouble winning the contract.” “Come on, Zachary,” Brian chided him. “You know that’s not gonna cut it for Vincent.” Which was true. Vincent Cardone was a mobbed-up little thug of a man. His specialty was giving ridiculously low bids on large construction projects. He’d slip half the money into his private offshore accounts, and use the other half to produce a cheap caricature of the job he was supposed to do. His work was flimsy and sometimes dangerous, but he tended to trade favors with the right people, so he did pretty well for himself. At least, he used to. A recent effort at cleaning up local government had left Vinnie cut off at the knees, without enough political clout to do much at all. He hadn’t built anything larger than an ice cream store in the past eighteen months. As far as Zach was concerned, that was exactly as it should be. Cardone was a criminal and a lowlife swindler. Zach certainly wasn’t going to help the man reestablish himself. “True,” Zach finally admitted. “That won’t be enough for him. But that’s exactly the point! Vinnie’s a con man, through and through. He shouldn’t be anywhere near a project this big. And you guys know it!” Brian held up both hands. “Hey, it’s not like that. Vincent’s a different man these days. You should see that restaurant he built on South Street and Madison. Solid! Like a rock! He’s really turned over a new leaf.” “You wouldn’t believe how good a job he did on the place,” Geordie added. Zach looked at the two of them with troubled eyes. “What’s this about?” he asked quietly. “Has he got something on you or something? Why get yourselves involved in this?” Geordie squirmed a little. “We’re just trying to help a local citizen rehabilitate himself,” Brian answered levelly. Zach sighed. “I’m sorry, guys. But I’m not helping Vinnie Cardone pull another scam at the city’s expense. If you want to know the truth, I helped get him off the city’s Preferred Vendor list in the first place. Besides, I already told Ray Macintosh that I’d support their bid. You know, the Guru Builders guy? If it makes you feel any better, you can tell Vinnie it wasn’t personal; I’d already promised my support to someone

else. But I can’t help you on this one.” That manuscript. That was pretty “If I may,” Geordie interjected, “Mr. cool. Izzy looked up, glanced at his watch, and started in surprise. It was already after 8 o’clock. “Gevald! I thought it was a quarter to seven!” Kenneth Borden Jr. grinned at his young employee. “I remember the days when I used to stay late, running through a case.” He gestured at himself, as if to say, here I am. “I still do, as you can see. But don’t stay too late. You can burn your eyes out staring at documents like this. Why, you didn’t even look up when I spoke to you!” “Sorry, sir,” Izzy mumbled. Ken rolled his eyes. “I couldn’t care less about that, Izzy. Don’t worry about it. I just don’t want you to run yourself ragged. Eventually, you’ll find yourself reading the same line, over and over again, without making any progress. Better to go home and get a good night’s sleep, come at it fresh in the morning. Besides —” he gave Izzy a friend pat on the shoulder “— the coffee’s better down the street.” “Thanks, Mr. Borden. I think I will head out.” Truth was, he had to get going anyway. He’d miss Maariv if he didn’t hurry. “Have a good one,” Kenny tossed after him as Izzy turned to leave. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” * * * * *

Geordie and Brian tramped back to their cars through the snow, their breath misting in front of them. Light snowflakes drifted down onto Geordie’s glasses, and his boots made crunching sounds in the snow. “Well, it was worth a shot,” Brian commented. In the darkness and snow, with Geordie’s glasses all speckled with snow, Brian was little more than a shadow. “What’re we gonna do? We need to get Vinnie that contract, and Zach’s word is gold with Bobby Reynolds. He’s not gonna listen to anyone else if Zach opens his mouth.” “Geordie,” Brian said quietly, “we’ve been friends with Zach for years. He’s a good guy. We had to give him this chance, and I really hoped he’d say yes.” Brian paused and fished a cigarette out of his pocket. He stuck it in his mouth, the lighter flashing through the darkness of the night. “But we can get Bobby Reynolds to come around. He’s got to see that even Zach Ganz has a dark side.” Brian stepped over the snow to his car. It made a chirping sound as he unlocked it. “This won’t be fun for any of us,” he continued, “but Zach made his bed. Nothing we can do about it.” He slipped into his car and shifted into drive. A moment later, he had disappeared into the night. TO BE CONTINUED...

Feeling the Void Yankel is worried about the war in the Ukraine, on the home front he’s worried about making enough money to cover yom tov expenses. He reports waking up at night with panic attacks. His constant worrying, he claims, is paralyzing him. So many people today live their lives without peace. They’re stressed, anxious and just plain worried. Worried about things happening far from home, close to home and in the home. Many times, these outside worries are born out of a fear of feeling pain inside their bodies. When people are worrying about the war in the Ukraine, for example, they don’t have to feel their internal shame and pain.

in front of them. This is the way they avoid having to feel their own personal inner feelings of shame and guilt. Other people may be drawn to addictions and other dangerous behaviors all with the same objective, to escape their own deep pain. Of course, it never helps because the body (and soul) is always waiting there patiently (or not so patiently) for them to wake up and return to themselves.

In general, humans seek to avoid pain which is why they often run to “drama” - chaotic experiences and events that include intense highs and lows In general, humans seek to avoid pain which is why they often run to “drama” - chaotic experiences and events that include intense highs and lows of their own creation or lead them to the “drama” of others’ creation. When people experience chaos in their lives, their focus is temporarily redirected to the drama

We’ve spoken at length about the shame and guilt some of us carry from faulty childhood beliefs but there’s another aspect to it as well that I’d like to address today. That is, there is another feeling that most humans seek to avoid in their lives - the feeling of spiritual disconnect. Before we are born, every human

being is wholly connected to the supreme Source of love and light (the Aibishter) but as a normal consequence of birth, we become disconnected. Not totally, of course, but once we enter into our physical bodies, there is a natural separation between us and our Creator. That sense of disconnect within leaves a deep void and a deep desire to re-connect that we all experience whether we’re conscious of it or not. This void causes discomfort and sadness which is why many people don’t like to think about it or even acknowledge it and which is another reason why individuals have difficulty just “being”, that is, staying present in

Worries are always about the future what will be - when, in reality, the authentic way to connect to life on the deepest level is through calmness, the moment. They constantly have to be doing, doing, doing, running, running, running. It’s always about what happened yesterday and what will happen tomorrow, never about what is going on right in front of them at this very moment. Worries are always about the future - what will be - when, in reality, the authentic way to connect to life on the deepest level is through calmness, allowing ourselves to be fully present in the moment in front of us. However, because of our terror of feeling the pain, sadness or deep yearning of the void, we run to “do” instead of staying to “be”. Many of us also end up creating unnecessary drama in our lives to avoid the extreme discomfort in our souls.

Toasted filberts give a rich, nutty flavor to these cookies. The texture is great without rebaking the slices, but for true biscotti crispness, follow the optional directions below. Note: If using packaged filberts, use 6 ounces chopped filberts and 6 ounces ground. If using whole nuts, chop them in a food processor until they are mostly ground, with some pieces remaining for texture. For perfectly shaped biscotti, divide the recipe among three 10-inch loaf pans. Bake for 50 minutes, and cut each one into 12 slices. INGREDIENTS

1. Preheat the oven to 350°. 2. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Toast the filberts for 10 minutes, then let them cool. 3. Transfer the filberts to a bowl. Mix them with potato starch and ground almonds until combined. Add sugar and mix.

4. In a separate bowl, mix the eggs with the oil, then add this to the dry ingredients. 5. Knead the biscotti until a smooth dough forms. 6. Divide the dough in three. Form three loaves on the cookie sheet. 7. Mix the topping and sprinkle this over the tops of the loaves, if desired. 8. Bake the biscotti for 40 to 45 minutes. Allow to cool. (Biscotti breaks if it’s sliced while warm.) 9. Once the biscotti has cooled, slice each loaf into approximately 18 slices. 10. Optional: For more crispy biscotti, preheat the oven to 250°. Lay the slices flat on the cookie sheet, and toast them for 10 minutes.

We know what the cleaning help issue looks like from our point of view: the desperation for help and the dearth of women who are willing to get their hands dirty and make our homes spotless and ready for Pesach. This week, we turn to the very women who report for duty each morning, ready to make our homes shine. What do they think about the roles they play in the life of Jewish homemakers? Is there any way we can make their job more pleasant? Easier? More comfortable? Let’s hear it from them directly.

M E E T: I S A B E L The hardest job is Passover cleaning. I find the walls hardest to do, especially when I’m expected to clean all the way up to the ceiling. The ovens are also hard. I don’t mind doing closets or refrigerators, though. The most enjoyable part of my job is folding laundry. I also like getting to see the children in the house. Something I cannot work without: Before Passover, I need a vacuum cleaner to help me clean. Throughout the year, sometimes people don’t give me a sponge to wash the bathtubs. A shmatte won’t do the same job.

Something I wish the homeowner would know: I enjoy my work most when I have a variety of different kinds of things to do. Some floors, some bathrooms, some dishes, some laundry… I like that. Something I’d like to share with the readership: I don’t especially mind any kind of work. Before Passover, what makes things difficult is that every woman needs the same things done, whether it’s furniture, walls, the kitchen, etc. I would really appreciate it if you would understand that.

For lunch I like to bring my own food and eat it outside or on the steps. If you’d like to give me something, I appreciate fruits very much. I don’t like bread or cake. I like to eat at about 1:00 p.m.

good cleaning lady is something I do not take for granted, and whenever opportunities arise to show my appreciation and grease the wheels — er, sneakers — I jump. Now it’s after a Friday Purim, and with most of the mishloach manos packages disassembled, it is time to put together a huge package for my cleaning lady. Assorted wafer rolls that must’ve been on special somewhere (we received over a dozen!) and mini halvahs that cause noses to turn up in our family make their way into that bag. I also throw in a handful of candies and then search the table for a drink. In an act of generosity, I select a bottle of wine — one that I know my husband, a wine connoisseur, won’t touch — and add it to the bag. The package looks rather grand. All I need is a nice ribbon to tie it all together. “Can you get me the ribbon container, please?” I call to my daughter who is studiously tallying her mountain of nosh. “I want to finish Rosa’s package.” “Why don’t you use the ribbon from this one?” she asks, pointing to the beautiful arrangement my husband received from his boss. Good point. I slip the ribbon off the cellophane, and it glides off ef-

bottle cover. Real silver, you know.” “REAL?!” I was practically shrieking. “Hey, calm down. He’s a generous guy. It’s not like he never flaunts his wealth.” I breathe heavily. “True, true.” “And Chaim says it’s Italian. Aren’t they, like, a lot more than the other pieces?” The rest of the conversation passes in a dizzying haze and I hear no words. When it’s quiet on the line and I no longer hear my husband’s voice, I realize that the conversation has ended. Obviously, my previous yelp had nothing to do with the generosity of my husband’s boss. It had everything to do with the fact that I had unknowingly gifted my cleaning lady with a sterling silver Italian wine bottle cover. When I compose myself enough to think straight (or crooked?), I dial Rosa. “Rosa?” “Yes, missus.” “Are you home?” “Waiting for the G train. I’m almost home.” “Okay, Rosa. Listen carefully. So the story is like this. The gift I gave you —” “Yes. Very, very nice. Thank you, missus.” Her Rs are heavily accented, and I pray she didn’t pass on the gift to anybody yet. Hashem, please. “I’m happy you like it. But just now, the store owner told me that she got much nicer gifts! And so I want to give you something else instead.” “That’s very, very good, Missus,” Rosa says. “Thank you!” Not trusting to wait until Wednesday when she works for me again, I ask (beg?) her I FEEL LIKE HUGGING if she can take the gift with ROSA AND MRS. The saga practically spills out on its own, and I realize I’m pacing the room. “Gladly,” Mrs. Loeb says with a laugh. “Let’s just hope she doesn’t change her mind overnight.” The next day, to my great relief, Rosa, true to her word, gives the wine bottle cover to Mrs. Loeb. I run out before my son’s bus to retrieve the treasure. Of course, I take along a three-sectioned bulky dip holder in exchange. (The bigger the better, we were taught.) Rosa is on a high. “Ah! Thank you, Missus!” I feel like hugging her and Mrs. Loeb and the silver bottle cover. The whole way home, I hold the gift like a well-deserved trophy, cradling it with affection. It gets the full honor it deserves at home, and I make room for it among the vast accessory collection. Friday night, I lay out the chargers, crisp linen napkins and cutlery. Then I dress an Isaac Ram Cabernet Sauvignon bottle in the beautiful Italian silver bottle cover and place it in the center of the table. Replete with flowers and goblets, the table is a masterpiece. Flanked by my two sons, my husband walks in from shul. He is about to start Shalom Aleichem when he picks up the wine bottle. “It really is a generous gift,” he says, fingering the wine bottle cover. And I’m quick to admit that it really, really is.

room number 1. Your first session will take place there.” My instructor is Evelyn. She has come back from New York, she explains, after her back could no longer take the abuse (seems she landed with a mop-hiding employer), and now she makes a living teaching the rest of us how to break in and keep at it without breaking apart. I look around at the others training with me — a lot of young teens like me — as Evelyn starts the first class and gets us started at choosing a name. “Pick something American, modern-sounding and short,” Evelyn instructs us. “We have pamphlets here” — she distributes them to us — “and they have basic guidelines and name ideas in different categories. “There are some brave women who stick to their Spanish names, but I’m not sure it’s such a smart move.” She motions for us to open the pamphlet. “On the first page, the list in red, beginning with Maria, contains the outdated names, which have already been overused by the previous generation of emigrants. These no longer work. People are tired of them, and there’s a general lack of trust when it comes to those names. The green list, the one starting with Lily, are all safe, short, standard American names. They’ll give your employer the feeling that you’re quick and learn fast. The orange list — starting with Sally, Heidi and Norma — has the more snazzy, daring names. This is if you want to brand yourself as a unique, talented, know-where-you’re-headed-to type. You might have an easier time asking for more money per hour with one of these, if you strike the right employer. “While you choose your name, bear in mind that your personalized necklaces and engraved bracelets should not be worn on the job. They won’t trust you with a Yolanda necklace when you call yourself Fanny.” Evelyn scans the room to make sure we all look ready. “I’m giving you ten minutes now to review the list and settle on a name. Then fill out your ID card with it and pin it on your shirt. During the rest of the time here, you will be addressed by your new name so you can adapt and get used to responding to it.” I look over the choices. I want something not too different from my name, Angelica, but Anne is on the red list. I can’t take that risk. I settle on Amelia. It’s a pretty enough name with a sort of Spanish ring to it. “Hi, my name is Amelia,” I write on my ID card. Goodbye, Angelica, I whisper mournfully as I pin the card onto my T-shirt. New York, here I come. * * * * *

me Amelia. We settle down as Sophia, who says she is our language instructor, motions us to our seats. She shares with a smile that, as Sophie, she had it easy during her stint in the U.S. Her parents had done her a huge service all those years ago. “Learning English is hard. Really hard,” Sophia says. “Some of you will actually master it, but until then, and for the rest of you, Google Translate makes the language barrier a lot easier.” “But before we talk about how to use Google Translate — and just be aware: some women will refuse to say stuff into your phone; it’s a religion thing, don’t be offended — we’ll start with several words that are of utmost importance to master.” She starts with the word taxi. “This is an important one. If you ever need a little monetary boost, this is the magic word. Write it down. Taxi. That’s taksee, and if you need to text it, it’s T-A-XI. Say it to your mistress, and it will generally net you around $5. That’s almost 39 quetzals. By now you can even get $6. Say you want it every day, or at least keep asking for it. On occasion, when you see that the women are even more stressed than usual, you can even ask for two.” “But one minute!” Gabriella — now Gaby — pipes up. “My cousin, who’s teaching me English, says that a taxi is the private car transportation they use to get around. What if I walk to this woman’s house? Or take a bus? Or, hopefully soon, get a car and drive?” “No tan.” Sophie waves a hand. “It doesn’t matter how you commute. You just say ‘taxi’ until you get that $5 bill. This is the word that sparks fear in these mistresses that you might not show up.” Next she moves on to the word appointment, explaining that when we need to take off, for whatever reason, that’s the word to use. It’s a good thing it’s such a useful word because it’s really hard to memorize and to spell. “And for emergencies, say it’s a time when the mistress will not take kindly to your not showing up,” So-

I desperately hope for my family to get visas, and I’m thankful that my sister Marianne (who was still allowed to go by Maria when she came ten years ago) is there to welcome me. things in the crevices. Of toys! Okay, no problem. I’ll do it. You are paying me, lady, right? But where is Patricia? Why didn’t she include this in her comprehensive cleaning course? It seems nothing I have to do today was part of the course, because soon I’m hauling a mattress off a bed. Okay, fine, this lady who is following me around like a hawk helps me. And I’m vacuuming dust and washing walls. But they look absolutely clean. I promise. My hands are sore from washing clean walls. And corners. Next she’ll make me do, what — the ceiling? And this work is even more exhausting than anything Patricia ever made me do back in Guatemala. I can barely move by the time Frida gives me a sandwich and motions me to the stairs. And I realize that that’s where her whole family has been eating. Really? Here’s this house with three rooms that have a long table and bunch of chairs in each, and mealtime is on the stairs. These New Yorkers are really weird. By the time she hands me the cash, I’m so exhausted that I forget even to say taxi so I could get my bonus. I don’t even count the money. I can’t think straight anymore. I don’t even remember how much I was supposed to charge per hour. I know only one thing: I can’t come back tomorrow. Frida is trying to tell me something. I have no idea what. She gestures with her hands. With her fingers. On her calendar. Oh, no lady, I don’t know what you’re asking, and no lady, I’m not coming back. And suddenly, those words I rehearsed time and again — I even know how to spell them! — come to me. “Hospital,” I tell her firmly. “Appointment.” She looks at me, uncomprehending. “Hospital appointment! Child! Me, hospital.” She still looks confused, and I don’t stay to explain. I run for my life. And I don’t even care if she won’t take me back. After all, Marianne already shared with me that in a few weeks time, I can rent a little room with her farther up in some place called South Fallsburg or Monticello — and earn twice the amount per hour. IN THE KITCHEN According to the Jewish religion, we are very careful never to mix meat and dairy products. Because of this, we have separate sides of the kitchen for meat and dairy. Some of us also have a side that is neither for meat nor dairy. Please be careful to wash your hands and change your gloves and cleaning rags when going from one side to another. Thank you! ¡Gracias!

DINING ROOM/LIVING ROOM

Hi, everybody! Although half of my kids are still noshing on Oodles and the other half are counting their money that I paid them for their Oodles, Purim seems like forever ago. The costumes are packed away, baruch Hashem, though can’t quite say that for the extra pounds that mysteriously sneaked up over Purim. Nobody offered to buy off all of my leftover nosh, and so I kind of, y’know, had to eat it. So… who’s in the mood to buckle down for some serious cleaning? Truth is — and I know some of you will roll your eyes at this — I truly am thankful for Pesach. Let’s face it: If not for this yom tov, some of us would only polish the silver when it was so yellow, we would think it was gold and have it melted down to make some jewelry for ourselves. But in all seriousness, there are some things we don’t clean throughout the year because we know we’ll do it before Pesach. So close your eyes for a minute, and picture Pesach once every five years. Think of all the loose change and missing socks you’d find then. Personally, I prefer to find the loose change every year.

1. CEILING, WALLS AND WINDOWS CEILING: You know the drill! Start with the ceilings. Dust or vacuum the corners, and work your way down. Make sure the lights are off and bulbs are cool before you start cleaning your fixtures. CHANDELIER: You can stand on your table, like I do. My

Prep List: GLOVES SHMATTES BROOM, SHOVEL, MOP, DUSTER, VACUUM CLEANER GLASS CLEANER LIGHT CLEANSER CHANDELIER SPRAY SILVER POLISH FURNITURE POLISH FLOOR CLEANER STEPSTOOL LADDER, OPTIONAL

kids find it hilarious so I try to do this when no one’s around. (Sometime around 4 a.m. works best.) Or use your ladder for those great heights you aspire to reach. You generally do not need a special cleaner for your fixture; hot, soapy water should do the trick. If you would like to use a spray, try Extend A Finish Chandelier Cleaner. Use a fabric glove or shmatte, and spray the cleaner onto the rag, or dip the rag into the water. Try not to spray directly onto the chandelier, as the spray will corrode metal. Use a dry shmatte to immediately wipe off the water or cleanser. Spray and wipe. Avoid rotating the chandelier. OTHER LIGHT FIXTURES: Wipe any other light fixtures with a damp cloth. I mention this in every article, but please, if you remove the fixture, do not replace it before it is completely dry. SPOTLIGHTS: Just use a damp cloth to wipe the inside rims, as spider webs tend to settle in there. WALL HANGINGS: These should ideally be removed. The area behind the frames tends to discolor a bit if not exposed and washed on occasion, so when you clean your walls, it’s best if you clean it all the way. Dampen a rag and wipe the frames. Remember never to

260

spray directly onto the wall hanging. DRAPES can be dry-cleaned, steamed if you have a steamer, or vacuumed. Drapes collect tons of dust. Keeping the pleats spread apart, use a handheld vacuum cleaner, and clean in an up-and-down motion. CURTAINS: Remove and wash as per instructions. BLINDS: Dust with a damp cloth. WINDOWS: Wash windows and sills. 2. CHINA CLOSET Okay! Whatever is sitting on top of your china closet does not belong there. Yeah, really. I don’t suppose the boxes of Pesach matzah sitting there from last year taste any better with dust as an added flavor. Empty the closet. (Or do one shelf at a time; whatever works for you.) Spray and wipe shelves. If you have mirror backing, polish that as well while making funny faces at yourself. SILVER: The best silver polish is Tarni Shield. Don’t use a lot at a time. Wipe with a rag or glove. Use Q-tips and toothpicks to clean the crevices. Run hot water over areas that have wax. You can let the silver polish dry on the silver and wash it off with hot water, but dry right away as water and salt generate black spots. Clean all of the other china closet contents. Or dust them. I’m not getting involved! Polish the outside with furniture polish. 3. SEFORIM CLOSET Remove any clutter from the top of the closet, and dust well. Don’t put anything back there, as it just makes

the room look messy. Try making space in your bottom shelves. Remove seforim, one shelf at a time. Dust the shelves. Whether or not you want to wipe down each sefer cover is up to you! Shake each sefer out. Again, use your judgment. The ones that were never used, leave them be. If you have cabinets at the bottom of your closet, empty them all out. Keep your photos or CDs here. Not much else should be kept in your living room. If you keep anything else there, like dreidels or such, use open bins to keep them tidy. 4. TABLE Remove the clutter. No! Don’t put anything back. If you have extensions, clean those as well. You can clean the table with furniture polish or any cleanser, really. 5. CHAIRS Fabric chairs can be vacuumed, steamed and/or spotcleaned. Leather chairs can be wiped down with a damp cloth, or try Lexol Leather cleaner. Spray on shmatte and not directly onto leather. How long this will take you will depend on how many crevices your chairs have and how much time you spend on said crevices. Dust and wash the other furniture in the room. 6. SOFA Throws and throw pillows are generally machine-washable. Always check instructions. If you have a steamer, it works beautifully on fabric couches. Otherwise, vacuum first, and then softly do a onceover with an upholstery cleaner. Try Bissell Crud Suds Upholstery Cleaner. Wipe away with a damp cloth. Don’t soak. Let dry. For leather couches, try Lexol leather cleaner. Spray it onto a rag, and wipe softly. Vacuum between cushions. 7. FLOOR Move the table or any other furniture. If you can’t move the china closet, make sure to clean behind it and under it. Sweep, dust and mop hardwood floors. Some area rugs can be washed in the machine. A steamer works great for carpets and rugs. Sprinkle Febreze Powder before vacuuming for that smell that everyone adores. Always vacuum the carpets before cleaning them with soap or spot-cleaning.

COAT CLOSET Whichever way you call it, be it coat closet, front closet, hall closet, or entry closet — it serves one purpose: to hold and store all clutter from around the house. (Kidding. This is NOT the purpose). Because it is the closet closest to your front door, you do, however, tend to put in all the bags that will be “taken care of.” Now is the time to really take care of them!

Prep List: GARBAGE BAGS GLOVES SHMATTES ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER BROOM, SHOVEL, VACUUM CLEANER HANGERS, CONTAINERS, HOOKS

If you’ve been following along the past few weeks, you know what to do as your first step! Empty your closet. To avoid getting overwhelmed with all the stuff that’s out of the closet, put it all in a large clear container until it’s ready to be reorganized. Vacuum all around, aiming for those spider webs that love to settle in the corners. Wipe your shelves, and remove dirt marks from the walls. Sweep the floor of your closet, and get down on all fours to wash the floor. My favorite part of doing closets — decisions, decisions, decisions. Before you put your stuff back, decide what to give away, throw out, or put in storage. (As the weather gets warmer, winter gear can be put in storage. If you have the space to keep them in the closet all year, transfer winter bins to the top shelf. However, this time of the year is rather tricky. You still need all of the winter gear — so keep these things handy for now.) Once you’ve decided what to put back and what to give away, you’re ready for the next and final step. Next, organize. Okay, I’ll admit it; this is also my favorite part. Keep in mind that this closet is not a storage or utility closet, so whatever is not used on a daily or weekly basis does not belong here. If you do have the extra shelving, you can store things on top shelves in nontransparent bins.

Hang everything facing one way, organized by length, color or size. Everything needs a container. Separate the bins by article or give each child and adult his or her own bin. Label the bin. Hang hooks for briefcases. Here’s a general list of what to keep in the front closet: Coats, jackets, rain gear Hats, mittens, gloves, scarves (seasonal: winter) Caps (seasonal: summer) Slippers, crocs, boots (space permitting) Briefcases, tote bags, pocketbooks I keep flashlights and reflectors in this closet as well. I also add an extra bin for shopping bags, and an extra container for “stuff to be taken care of.” And while you’re near the front door, just a reminder that your mezuzos might need checking…

Catch you next week!

State Names We all know that the U.S. is a great, big melting pot of humanity. Each corner of our country has its individual history of which country ceded which plot of land to whom, its own ports for immigration, and its unique attraction to different global communities. The southwestern states boast a history steeped in Mexican culture, and the result of that is a plethora of Spanish words that have made their way into American English. Here is but a sampling:

Seeing these names might make you wonder why you didn’t connect the dots on your own, but we all need some help sometimes…

Colorado means “red-colored,” and it is named so for the reddish river running through the state. Florida simply means “flowery.” (I know, right?) Montana means “mountain.” Another shocker. And Nevada, which may be a bit more of a surprise, means “snowy.”

Animal Names Some English words borrowed from Spanish stay exactly the same, while others use the Spanish originals only as inspiration.

Alligator originates from the words el lagarto (“the lizard”). Armadillo (a Spanish original) means “little armored one.” Cockroach was borrowed from the word cucaracha. And that pesky fly, known by its original Spanish name the

mosquito, means “little fly.”

War Jargon Since the entire southwestern region was snatched, returned and stolen between the Spanish and other nationalities at some point or another, it should come as no surprise that very relevant terms changed hands too.

Conquistador simply means “conqueror.” A flotilla is a “little fleet.” (A little flota.)

Guerrilla (the other one; not the animal) means a “small war.” And renegade originates from renegado, a traitor (you knew there was an o there somewhere, right?).

More Words First there’s patio (“inner courtyard”), and then there’s plaza (“public square”). Then there’s cargo (“to load”) and embargo (“to seize”). Apparently, Americans couldn’t resist recreating these words as nouns to give them each a fresh twist. Then there are a few great words beginning with an s that we all know. There’s siesta (“a nap”), suave (“smooth”), and savvy (which comes from sabe — “knows” — and sabio — “wise”). Then, of course, there’s a bonanza (“prosperity” in Spanish), which we all want, pronto (“hurry up!”)!

Names of Food You didn’t think we’d forget these words, did you? They don’t need any translations. Hearty appetite! There’s the burrito and the nacho, the taco and the quesadilla. And of course, we can’t not mention the tortilla. Then there’s salsa and vanilla, daiquiri and tequila. Pina colada and jalapeno, oregano and cilantro.

QUICK TIP: In Spanish, the -lla ending is pronounced -ya, and the j is

pronounced h. So it’s a tor-ti-ya, a kay-sedi-ya, and hala-peno — or, if you want to be extra fancy, hala-pay-nyo.

Lucky for Hispanic little kids learning to read and write, Spanish is a phonetic language. This means that its spelling and pronunciation are pretty consistent and straightforward, which means a way smaller learning curve for those learning the language.

Spanish is mostly a Latin-inspired language, but due to the Arabic invasion of the Iberian Peninsula some thirteen centuries ago, many Spanish words originate from the Arabic language. While English is short and to the point (we don’t have too much time or patience, do we?), the Spanish language, in contrast, is flowery and poetic, and a simple English-to-Spanish translation is bound to deliver way more words than you originally had.

There are 21 countries in the world that have Spanish as their official language. Maybe you should start practicing your Spanish numbers; you never know where you’ll need them!

A note of tribute upon the passing of Sar HaTorah Maran Hagaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, zt”l BY: Y. B L O O M I N G

“Who will replace Reb Chaim?” Before we can answer this question, widely asked these days both rhetorically and literally, let’s take a moment to reflect on the life and legacy of the Sar HaTorah whose passing leaves the entire Torah world bereft. How can we even find a title or singular moniker that would do justice to the life of Reb Chaim and his impact? It’s not Rosh Yeshivah, it’s not Rav of a kehillah, it’s not mechaber sefer, and it’s not Posek Hador. There’s nothing that can say what “Reb Chaim’’ says! Chazal rank the hierarchy of titles given to various Tannaim and Amoraim and finish by saying that the greatest honor of all is those who are just called by their name — gadol m’rabon, shmo! The name Reb Chaim has for many years now unequivocally meant the preeminent Torah figure in our midst, widely accepted as the Sar HaTorah and Gadol Hador. In every corner of the Jewish world, this name was revered, respected and beloved. For families facing a critical medical dilemma or Yidden in need, Reb Chaim’s was the audience for which they would move heaven and earth. For major decisions involving Klal Yisroel or entire Jewish communities, his

was the guidance that mattered most. And when Reb Chaim opined on a matter big or small, an entire nation sat up to listen and follow. Perhaps being a Gadol who defies titles begins with the little things. * * * * *

The famous Torah-packed schedule of Reb Chaim did not allow for anything to impede his ceaseless mission to learn, study, repeat and memorize the entirety of Torah Shebiksav and Torah Sheba’al Peh. It did not matter whether he had married off a child only hours before, the greatest dignitary was about to visit, or the world around him was on fire; nothing could get in the way of Reb Chaim completing his daily Torah regimen in his chosen manner. The seeds of his gadlus lay in the single-mindedness and wholeheartedness with which Reb Chaim approached every matter at hand. When nothing gets in the way, there is no limit to the heights one can reach. Reb Chaim’s unwavering love for learning Torah might seem out of reach for most of us, but his commitment to

what matters most carries a lesson for all of us. It is well-known that Reb Chaim completed Shas, Midrash, Rambam, Shulchan Aruch and more on a yearly basis. But it may be even more noteworthy to rewind almost eighty years to the days when it all began. Reb Chaim shared that when he was just a teenager, he first committed to completing Shas each year. He failed. The next year, he made the same commitment, yet failed again. This was repeated for a third year. He was almost twenty when he finally succeeded, and from there, he never looked back. Isn’t there a lesson here for all of us? The gadol inside each of us relies on us to be persistent, consistent and determined to reach our goals. The tools are there, but it’s on us to actualize them and unleash the incredible potential within us. In years past, Reb Chaim had a policy that he would respond to every single letter he received with a handwritten answer. These responses were quite often no more than a mere maybe or I don’t know, yet each inquiry received a dutiful response, despite the questions often bordering on the absurd. Reb Chaim once remarked that he can discern from the content of the letters that many people just want to receive his written response, but he took it as his personal chesed to accommodate them, regardless of his incredibly tight schedule. Once he set this policy, the letters could never pile high enough on his desk to discourage him from this task. (While we’re on this subject, he was known to respond to the letters in the order of Kohanim first, then Leviim and then Yisroelim. After all, respect for Kohanim is what halacha demands). In my capacity as a writer, I work with the prominent Israeli organization Tov V’Chesed, led by R’ Yakov Eliezer Shisha. Knowing that Reb Chaim only gives visitors a booheh (short for bracha b’hatzlacha) nod, it caught me by surprise to learn that just this past Chanukah, despite his frail state and Torah-filled schedule, Reb Chaim hosted 300 young yesomim, giving them each a Chanukah coin, a bracha and individual attention. But it shouldn’t have been surprising. Reb Chaim’s greatness was his determination to do the right thing at every moment. And when young orphans needed his attention and affection, he had no better way to spend his precious time. I recently spoke with a family member of a prominent personality in Eretz Yisroel who supported Reb Chaim and his family for many decades. When the donor’s children and grandchildren visited Eretz Yisroel years ago, they asked whether Reb Chaim would accommodate them on a personal visit. Despite his hakaras hatov for the family, the Sar HaTorah demurred, saying that his Torah learning doesn’t allow for such visits. However, he added

that he spends a set amount of time with his widowed sister Yosfah every Friday, and if she approves, he would allow the family to join. Indeed they did, and the memories of that visit have remained etched in their memories since. In those moments, he wasn’t Reb Chaim Kanievsky, Sar HaTorah. He was just a loving brother, fully committed to caring for his lonesome sister and providing her with the brotherly love she needed.

Reb Chaim’s legendary humility and matter-of-fact persona would often take observers by surprise. But to Reb Chaim himself, there was nothing notable about it. In his mind, he wasn’t the towering Torah great, lowering himself to meet people at their level; he was just a man fulfilling his duty and loyally serving Hashem and his Torah every living moment. * * * * *

It has become common for biographies of gedolim to focus on the awe-inspiring and the almost superhuman aspects of their lives and their avodas Hashem. While this undoubtedly serves a great purpose, it also often leaves readers with a feeling of distance and an inability to even relate to these angels in human form. What Reb Chaim’s life taught us and demands of us, on the other hand, is eminently relatable and applies to each of us in the personal circumstances of our lives. We can all find it within ourselves to embody what we believe — no, we know — to be true and virtuous! Let us now circle back to our original question: Who will replace Reb Chaim? In our own way, all of us can. Will we?
