THE PERFECT PESACH PROGRAM

(Re: To the Finish Line, Issue 338) I so appreciated your article on Pesach cleaning by Sara Goldstein. It is presented in such a clear and organized manner, and it motivated me to start early this year and finally tackle all the spaces I haven’t touched in too long. I really pushed myself (although I have to confess that I didn’t do it all), and I so much enjoyed my fresh, clean room! I almost feel like I live in a new house. I’d like to share some comments: The furniture spray Pledge worked wonders in polishing bedroom furniture, and it leaves a fantastic, fresh smell. For the windows I tried the vinegar solution, but it was challenging to take the streaks off and clean it completely. I just changed to oldfashioned streak-free Windex, and it worked great. Also, Sara says to throw away the bedroom garbage can. Any specific reason for that? I love the convenience! M.G.

M&S SHOE REPAIR

SARA GOLDSTEIN RESPONDS: Thank you for the feedback! I included a streak-free Windex in my list, because it still works best! It is 2022 after all, and half of the country wants a chemical-free solution to all their problems, so that’s where vinegar comes in. The reason for discarding the garbage can? How about I challenge you to try it for one week and let me know how it worked for you? Happy Cleaning! Sara

THE WAY’S A LITTLE LONGER…

(Re: To the Finish Line, Issue 338) I am so excited about your Pesach cleaning program. It really gave me a push to head over to the starting line. And thanks to you, my bedroom cleaning is well underway! That said, I am so happy for all of you super-organized balabustas who can tackle a master bedroom in under four and a half hours. In

my house, it’s more like four and a half days. Just to make sure that I’m not an anomaly, I decided to ask ten random people how long it takes for them to Pesachclean their master bedroom. I was hoping at least one of them would agree with the writer, but all ten said that it generally takes them way longer. So all of you who can manage it in four and a half hours, kudos to you! You are part of an elite group. And everyone else, don’t feel bad. You are in great company. S. Neiman

NOT WHAT WE’RE WAITING FOR

(Re: To the Finish Line, Issue 338) In the Pesach cleaning article, the author writes that “at the end of the day, all of us will be at the gleaming Seder table eating the long-awaited marror.” It’s not long-awaited. We daven every day that Moshiach should come and that we should not have to eat the marror this year. Yes, we eat marror as a remembrance of the suffering the Yidden endured in Mitzrayim, but that’s not what we’re waiting for. We’re waiting for Moshiach. Yearning for the Day

(Re: Artisanal Popcorn, Issue 338) Thank you so much for the s’mores popcorn recipe. It was easy and fun to make, and it’s simply delicious! M.K.

HANDS-ON FUN

(Re: Parenting at Play, Issue 337) Thank you for highlighting the importance of mothers getting down on the floor to play with their little ones. I just wanted to add that even mundane chores like dressing, bathing and eating can be turned into fun. When my children were little, I used to dress them to the Hokey Pokey song, and they loved it. For bathtime fun, there is quite a selection of bath toys on the market, and playing with differently sized cups is also fun, as is bathing dolls. I also used to sing songs while rinsing their hair. And during toddler feeding time, I think we all do THE MONSEY VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS.

CLARIFYING THE TOPIC

(Re: My Life With Misophonia, Issue 334) After reading the article about misophonia and the subsequent letters, we feel compelled to take time to share our view on this very important topic that affects the lives of all those who suffer from auditory sensitivities. As neurodevelopmental occupational therapists with over 40 years of practice between us, we have treated countless children and young adults who suffer the spectrum of auditory sensitivities, which all stem from a brain-based neurological dysfunction whose effects can range from acute physical discomfort to strong emotional reactions. Many have adapted subtle coping mechanisms, yet suffer in silence while constantly being hypervigilant to avoid everyday sounds that trigger them. Others, as much as they wish to, cannot control their emotional reactions, and they may become edgy or even exhibit aggressive behavior. In both presentations, the fight-or-flight response has been triggered. With time, even the thought of sitting down to eat a meal with family, attending a social event/

simcha, or sitting in silence with a loved one whom they perceive is breathing too loudly may become the actual trigger for them — even in the absence of sound. It can be debilitating, and those affected often feel misunderstood when those around them do not grasp the extent of their suffering. The good news is that there is help to be found. Our sensory systems are independent of one another, yet work together to integrate our perception of how we interpret our world. Just as a blind person will use their sense of hearing to help guide them, individuals with auditory sensitivities may depend on and use another sensory system to help them regulate and organize themselves to function as best as they can when presented with their individual triggers. Along with compensations, remediation is possible. A trained professional can attempt to determine if there is a possible root cause for the auditory sensitivity and treat the issue. This is also why the suggestion of exposure and desensitization, which some professionals advocate for, is not usually what we recommend, as unless the root of the issue is determined and treated, repetitive exposure does not truly help; if anything it can exacerbate the intensity of the problem. With careful evaluation and good observational skills by a trained professional, different treatment approaches, including sensory and reflex integration and the utilization of an appropriate auditory augmentative technology, can be implemented to improve the quality of life of those who suffer from auditory sensitivities. PARSHAS VAYIKRA Little Bird, Big Sacrifice

The poor man who could not afford to bring a sheep or goat as a korban would bring a bird. Rashi points out two interesting facts. The bird was sacrificed along with the feathers of its wings, even though the smell of burning feathers is rather repulsive. Why would the Torah instruct us to sacrifice these parts of the bird as well? Also, the pasuk says of the bird, “Isheh rei’ach nicho’ach la’Hashem — A fire offering with a pleasing fragrance to Hashem” (Vayikra 1:17). The same language is used in regard to a whole animal korban. Could it be that the little bird and large sheep or goat bring the same pleasure to Hashem?

THE BEN ISH CHAI once told the story of a simple Jew who lived in Baghdad. He was an am ha’aretz with all of the idiosyncrasies that come along with the stereotype: He had lots of emunah peshutah, but little brains. Even though he hardly knew how to read or write, the man was blessed with much wealth and a large family of fifteen children — ten sons and five daughters. From time to time, he would go to shul. He didn’t know how to daven, but he enjoyed listening to the chazan as he led the community members in heartfelt tefillah. The chazan had a particularly sweet way of chanting the mishnah of Eizehu Mekoman that we say every morning in the Korbanos — “Eilu va’eilu nisrafin b’veis hadeshen — These, the bull and the goat of Yom Kippur, and those, the bulls and the goats that are burned, are then burned in the place of the ashes” (Zevachim 5b). As the chazan chanted the words in his special tune, our simple Jew was enthralled. In his mind, these words took on a powerful, almost magical existence, and he imagined the chazan drawing upon treasure houses of bracha through these words. All day long, he hummed the mishnah to himself over and over: “Eilu va’eilu nisrafin b’veis hadeshen…” That Shabbos, when the time came for him to bless his children, he decided to use his newly-learned words. Surely, it is a

fitting bracha, he presumed. He lifted his hands to his son’s head and wholeheartedly said, “Eilu va’eilu nisrafin b’veis hadeshen.” He then continued to bless all fifteen children this way. One week, the man hosted a talmid chacham for the Shabbos seudah. The guest was aghast as he heard the words loudly whispered by his host. He couldn’t control his shock and jumped up. “Why are you wishing upon your children that they be burned?!” he demanded. “What kind of bracha is that?!” That night, the guest had a dream. “Why did you disturb your host from his heartfelt blessings? Know that he davened in all sincerity, as if he were imparting the most special bracha, and his pure tefillah was accepted Above.” It doesn’t matter what one says; it matters how he says it. That is the way it was with korbanos. It was not what a Yid brought; but how he brought it. * * * * * King Agrippas once decided to bring one thousand korbanos olah. He sent a message to the Kohen Gadol: “Please reserve the Mizbe’ach for me today! No one else should bring korbanos.” Some time later, a poor man entered the Beis Hamikdash.

It doesn’t matter what one says; it matters how he says it. He carried with him two turtledoves. “I have brought these two for a korban olah,” he said. The Kohen Gadol explained that the king had ordered that nobody other than himself bring a korban on this day. “Please,” the man begged, explaining his rationale. “You see, every day I go hunting, and every day, I catch four turtledoves. I bring two of them to the Beis Hamikdash as korbanos, and use the other two to feed my family. It is clear to me that Hashem wishes for this to be my daily ration. If you do not allow me to bring the two that are reserved for Hashem, I fear I will be cut off from my Heavenly parnassah in the future.” The Kohen Gadol was moved by the poor man’s words and accepted the birds. That evening, King Agrippas had a dream. “The poor man’s korban was accepted Above with greater pleasure than yours.” The message was meant to prevent the king from feeling too proud of himself for having brought such a large donation, but the king was upset that his command had not been followed. He sent a messenger to find out why the Kohen Gadol had not heeded his request, and the Kohen Gadol explained that he simply didn’t have the heart to decline the poor man’s sincere contribution. When the king heard this, he sent back a message saying, “You did well, indeed!” From this story, we understand that it isn’t the size nor the monetary value of a korban that determines its significance. Rather, it is the motive behind it. The world and everything in it belongs to Hashem. Does Hashem really need our money? Hashem just wants our heart. Rashi explains that the Mizbe’ach should be sated from the poor man’s offering just as it is with the rich man’s animal. Thus, the bird, with its foul-smelling feathers, brings the same pleasure to Hashem as a larger korban, given that it is brought with a heart that is fully directed toward Hashem. Whether one offers much or little, if his heart is in it, it brings the same “rei’ach nicho’ach l’Hashem.”

Did You Know? The Midrash says of Yerushalayim during the times of the Beis Hamikdash that there was no city in which people were as happy as Yerushalayim. There was no room for worry or anxiety because the Yidden knew that through the korbanos, they had the ticket to reuniting with Hakadosh Baruch Hu. This is why the Beis Hamikdash was called “mesos kol ha’aretz — the joy of the entire earth” (Tehillim 48:3).

NY/NJ Roll Out Welcome Mat for Ukrainian Refugees With more than a million Ukrainian people fleeing their homeland in fear of their lives, the governors of New York and New Jersey have both said that they are willing to welcome refugees looking for shelter. A statement released by Governor Kathy Hochul at the end of February condemned the violence in the Ukraine and noted that New York bears the distinction of having the largest Ukrainian population in the United States. “Our prayers are with the Ukrainian people, including those in New York who are scared for their family and loved ones,” wrote Hochul. “Just as the Statue of Liberty stands tall in our harbor, New York stands ready to welcome Ukrainian refugees.” Hamodia posted a March 2nd letter written by Governor Phil Murphy to President Joe Biden declaring his state’s solidarity with the Ukrainian people. Murphy noted that many of his state’s 75,000 Ukrainian residents came to the United States as refugees from the former Soviet Union, and New Jersey has a long history of embracing refugees. New Jersey hosted Afghan allies and their families last year at Joint Base McGuire-DixLakehurst. “We will be proud to do our part in welcoming Ukrainian men, women and children who have left their generational homes in the face of Russia’s cruel and illegitimate invasion of

the Ukraine,” wrote Murphy, who also asked the president to offer humanitarian protection to Ukrainians who have already sought refuge in the United States. Thousands of Jewish refugees have successfully crossed the border into neighboring Moldova, with Chief Rabbi Pinchas Zaltzman estimating that 50 new Jewish escapees arrive every hour. Moldova began preparing for the Russian invasion ahead of the actual military action, said Rabbi Zaltzman, renting buses, arranging hotel rooms and ordering several tons of food, all of which has already been used in the humanitarian rescue effort.

Grand Opening of Evergreen Uptown in Pomona Evergreen Uptown opened in Pomona on Tuesday on Route 202, at the site of the former Stop & Shop in the Pacesetter Park Shopping Center. With a slightly different personality than its flagship Route 59 store, the newest member of the Evergreen family is aiming to offer a shopping experience that mixes upscale and traditional, with wide aisles and plenty of parking. Evergreen Uptown will offer an in-store dining area, artisan sourdough and will save residents of Monsey’s newer areas, including Pomona, New City and Haverstraw, from having to make the more than five-mile drive into town to buy their groceries. Also joining the Monsey supermarket scene this coming summer will be a branch of Aron’s — a chain of kosher stores with locations in Queens and West Orange, New Jersey. Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht announced last week on WRCR that Aron’s will be taking over the former ShopRite location in Tallman and will be offering top-quality products when it opens.

Airmont Residents Try To Block Construction of Jewish Cemetery and Mikvah Citing environmental and quality-of-life concerns, residents of Airmont’s Hillside Avenue are continuing their efforts to keep a mikvah and a cemetery out of their neighborhood. The Journal News reported that while both the Ohel Sarah mikvah and the Har Shalom Cemetery being built in Airmont at the New Jersey border have been approved by the Town of Ra218

mapo’s land-use boards, neighbors have filed legal actions in an effort to overturn their approvals. The eighteen-acre cemetery property will have more than 20,000 plots and is located next to two existing cemeteries on Saddle River Road. The Department of Environmental Conservation cited the property’s owners for not installing erosion and sediment controls that could lead to water-quality issues, but those issues are in the process of being rectified. Airmont Trustee Shimon Moses said that the cemetery underwent a rigorous review process before being approved by an engineer and the town’s planning and zoning board, with the Rockland Planning Department greenlighting the project, albeit with several recommendations. The 37,109-square-foot mikvah, which crosses into Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, also underwent additional construction in order to satisfy DEC requirements. While the Rockland Planning Department ruled that it was too large for the property, that decision was overruled by the Ramapo Planning Board. Neighbors have been unsuccessful in their attempts so far to stall the projects by claiming that they would cause flooding on nearby residential properties, insisting that siteplan approvals and permits should be voided. They have also expressed concerns about congestion that could result in the area, especially with plans also in place for a school to be built next to the cemetery. But Moses argued that the year-long closure of the Hillside Avenue bridge at the New York-New Jersey border is a far bigger concern. He blamed a local citizens advocacy group for keeping the five-foot-long bridge closed to traffic, saying that it is “pitting neighbor against neighbor and effectively putting up a wall instead of a bridge.”

Cuomo Ad Kicks Off Political Comeback Painting himself as the victim of dirty politics, former governor Andrew Cuomo has put an end to his months of relative silence, releasing a 30-second advertisement attacking the credibility of his accusers in an effort to clear his name. He also gave a Sunday morning speech in Brooklyn. According to The New York Times, Cuomo’s campaign account spent $369,000 on his “Politics vs. The Law” ad which describes the former governor as “a proven leader” and argues that five district attorneys dropped harassment charges against him. Cuomo’s critics were quick to note that the ad omits the fact that prosecutors said that they found his accusers credible but could not legally charge him. It also makes no mention of two other ongoing inquiries — a criminal investigation launched by New York State Attorney General Letitia James into Cuomo’s reported use of government resources to write his $5.1 million COVID-19 memoir and an inquiry into his misrepresentation of nursing home deaths during the pandemic. A spokesperson for James took Cuomo to task for the ad, reported the New York Post. “It’s shameful that after multiple investigations found Cuomo’s victims to be credible, he continues to attack their accounts rather than take responsibility for his actions,” said the spokesperson. Former gubernatorial executive staffer Charlotte Bennett, 220

one of several to accuse Cuomo of harassment, described her former boss as a narcissist. “He has spun a web of lies and ploys so thick that perhaps he is diluting [sic] himself into believing he can convince others of his ‘Big Lie,’” wrote Bennett. In his first public speech since leaving Albany, Cuomo spent 25 minutes in Brooklyn this past Sunday blaming “cancel culture” for unfairly driving him out of office. Taking aim once again at the attorney general, Cuomo said that once the “political sharks in Albany smelled blood,” they “exploited the situation for their own purposes.” James wasted no time in responding to Cuomo’s allegations, saying that he continues to blame others for his own mistakes. “Cuomo wasn’t railroaded,” said James in a statement. “He quit so he wouldn’t be impeached. New Yorkers are ready to move forward from this sick, pathetic man.” A Siena College poll found that most New Yorkers aren’t accepting the narrative that Cuomo is trying to push. Just 21% felt that the former governor was innocent of harassment, while 80% said that his decision to resign last August as the threat of impeachment loomed was the right course of action.

With inflation and the Russian invasion of the Ukraine sending already high gas prices even farther north, New Jersey lawmakers are pushing a plan that would save consumers money by allowing them to pump their own fuel. New Jersey and Oregon are the only two states in the country that prohibit drivers from pumping their own fuel at gas stations. ABC 7 reported that the Motorist Fueling Choice and Convenience Act would give those gassing up in the Garden State the option of filling up their own tank or having an attendant do it for them. “Everyone’s in a rush, so if you can pump your own gas, save 15 cents or more per gallon, why not?” asked Assemblywoman Annette Chaparro. The measure has the support of both Democrats and Republicans in the New Jersey Legislature and would require gas stations with more than four pumps to offer full service as an option, while smaller locations could switch over to selfserve entirely. A law passed by Congress in 1949 prohibited drivers from putting gas in their vehicles on their own because of safety concerns, but over the years, nearly every state in the country has dialed back those restrictions. The New Jersey Gasoline-Convenience-Automotive Association, which represents nearly 1,000 fuel retailers, expressed its support of the bill. Its president, Joe Ocello, is a gas station owner who is feeling the pinch of today’s difficult economic climate. “Increasing prices and labor shortages are making it more and more difficult to run a gas station,” said Ocello. The ongoing labor shortage has also created problems for gas station owners. Levent Serbas said that he has had to close his gas station at times in the middle of the day because he had no attendants available to man the pumps. The bill still needs to be greenlighted by the legislature and Governor Phil Murphy and could go into effect 90 days after being signed.

CHAPTER 1

abbi Chaim Simcha Ginzburg leaned back in his chair and carefully fingered the well-worn pages of Chochmas Menashe. “There’s a five-way machlokes about the order in which Shlomo Hamelech wrote his three seforim,” he began. “But the oilam tends to follow Rebbi Yonason, in Shir Hashirim Rabbah — that he wrote Shir Hashirim when he was young, Mishlei in the middle of his life, and Koheles toward the end of his life. And Rebbi Yonason gives a hesber. When a person is young, he sings about love. When he’s a little older, he talks about chachmah, wisdom. And when he’s already old, he begins to speak of havalim, of vanity. The pointlessness of chasing after fleeting, ephemeral pleasures.” “Vhat’s a hesber?” Morrie Shwartz interrupted. The rabbi put a finger on his place in the sefer and looked up. “A hesber is an explanation, an underlying reason for a person’s opinion.” Morrie smiled, the wrinkles in his age-worn face bunching up around his eyes. “Ah. And vhat’s ephemeral?” Two of the other members of the shiur, Gabby Volover and Mendel Kornwasser, chuckled. Rabbi Ginzburg smiled. “It means something that won’t last long.”

“Ah,” Morrie said. “So not so different from fleeting, yes?” “That’s right.” “Okay, thank you.” Morrie leaned back in his chair, satisfied, and Rabbi Ginzburg turned back to the shiur. “Now, we read Koheles on Shabbos Chol Hamoed Sukkos. The classic hesber for this,” he shot Morrie a wink, “is that Sukkos is zman simchaseinu, a time of joy, a very exciting time of the year. There’s a concern, however, that people might get too caught up in the excitement and do something inappropriate. So that’s why we read Koheles, to remind us of how silly this life is, how we have to keep focused on the real goal of avodas Hashem.” Rabbi Ginzburg smiled as he looked out at the assembled crowd — all six of them. There was Morrie, 73 years young, as he liked to say. Then there was Gabby the electrician, who showed up to every class the Rav gave, despite his booming business. Mendel, the sarcastic and quickwitted shopkeeper with a heart of gold, was another regular. Yankele “Jack” Gross, on the other hand, was a real-estate attorney and a new addition to the shiur. Then there was Baruch Lichtman, who had been very ill as a child and had struggled as a teenager, and now faced a whole new series of challenges. Somehow, Baruch kept

pulling himself back together after every fresh tragedy, and Reb Chaim Simcha had a special place in his heart for him. Finally, there was Yisrael Uriah, better known as Izzy, Reb Chaim Simcha’s younger brother. Together, they formed the core of the new Lodz chassidus. Just seven men, counting the Rav, and one of them long past retirement. But as Reb Chaim Simcha constantly reminded himself, they’d only just begun to rebuild the legacy of his illustrious great-grandfather. Reb Menashe Sholom Ginzburg had led a great kehillah in Lodz before the war. A tzaddik and talmid chacham, and widely rumored to be a great mekubal, his teachings brought light to the entire region. But the Nazis had destroyed Jewish Lodz forever. It became a slave labor camp, and Reb Menashe was forced to work in a textile factory. The hands that had lovingly turned pages of Gemara turned to stitching uniforms with swastikas on the breasts. Ultimately, in the spring of 1944, Reb Menashe Sholom was sent to Chelmno, a mobile killing van. His chassidim, too, were mostly killed, the few survivors scattered across the globe. It was the end of an era. Now, 78 years later, Reb Chaim Simcha sat in a small shul in New York and taught his great-grandfather’s Torah. “The Rebbe Reb Menashe had a different approach,” he continued, his face lit up with a smile. “Different but the same, as he so often wrote. The first piece of his pirush to Koheles explains what the sefer is supposed to be about. According to him, Koheles is Shlomo Hamelech’s great experiment, his thesis, so to speak, in which he tries to find what makes human beings tick. What keeps us going?” He looked his audience in the eyes. “What makes us… content? Happy?” “Vhat’s so hard?” Morrie asked. “Cholent on Friday night and schnapps at Kiddush. Done!” Reb Chaim Simcha laughed along with the rest of the group before replying. “You’d be surprised,” he said after the group had quieted down. “But that’s exactly what the sefer is all about. How to find your simcha, how to be happy. So, of course we read it on Sukkos. If we’re supposed to be b’simcha on Sukkos, we need to know how to get there! And this,” he said, patting the sefer on the table, “this is the textbook for simcha!” With that, he marked his place carefully, closed the book, and kissed it. “We’ll stop here. Have a good day, everyone.” The six attendees pushed their chairs back from the table and stood up. Izzy began to clear away the leftover kokosh cake and coffee while Morrie walked over to shake Reb Chaim Simcha’s hand. “Thank you, Rabbi,” he said. “My father vould be very proud.” “I certainly hope so,” Reb Chaim Simcha told Morrie with a smile. Morrie’s father was from Lodz and had actually known Reb Menashe. This meant that Morrie had heard stories of Reb Chaim Simcha’s great-grandfather from a firsthand source. Reb Chaim Simcha had

years. It was a converted house, the living room and two bedrooms joined to form a single room large enough to daven in. Maplewood shelves lined every wall, stuffed with seforim rescued from estate sales or donated by various parties. The aron kodesh, beautifully handcrafted by a sweet old man who wanted to do one last thing for the chassidus his father had loved, contained a Sefer Torah rescued from Lodz itself. It was the pride and joy of the shul. It hadn’t been easy to build this. There weren’t that many Lodz chassidim left, much less anyone willing and able to put real money into the project. His brother shrugged. “Research. I’ve got to track down some eminent domain cases for Ken, and then there’s the shul tax-deductible status to negotiate later today. His office had been furnished by a wealthy donor whose company was remodeling. Reb Chaim Simcha got their hand-me-downs, but they were far nicer than anything he’d ever bought from a store. The man had sent his own design team to do the installation, and they’d done their utmost to make the office worthy of the gold plaque on the door that thanked their boss for his generosity. They’d designed the plaque, as well. An enormous leather throne of an office chair sat behind a mahogany desk that would have been at home in the office of a prestigious bank manager. A mammoth portrait of Reb Menashe in a gilded frame was surrounded by matching mahogany bookshelves, and a black leather couch for visitors completed the look of casual opulence. It was all far too fancy for Chaim Simcha’s taste, though he imagined it looked properly rebbish. So who knew? Gam zu l’tovah, in any case… He switched on his computer, opened the file where he’d been preparing his commentary, and sunk down into the leather chair. His movements slowed, his breathing became softer, and after a few moments, his fingers began to dance across the keyboard, pausing every so often to check his notebook or the sefer in front of him. He was brought out of his trance some 45 minutes later when there was a loud knock at the front door. It was the mailman. “Package for you, Rabbi. It’s certified. Sign here, please.” Chaim Simcha signed his name and took the manila envelope curiously, shivering from the winter cold. He hadn’t sent for anything. He thanked the postman and stepped back inside. Once the door was closed and he began to warm up again, Chaim Simcha looked over the package with interest. His name and address were printed in large letters, and the postage was prepaid. He glanced at the return address and gaped. He couldn’t read the name of the street, but the city and country were pretty clear: Łód , Polska. TO BE CONTINUED...

Beating the Overwhelm (Last week we discussed how feeling overwhelmed and stressed with what we have to do often defeats our end goals. We discussed the importance of stepping back and evaluating why the strong need to finish our long to-do lists. We began to discuss ways to break down our “must-do” lists to minimize the stress and lead happier lives.) The main thing is to decide what you can reasonably accomplish in your specified time frame and take it slow. Don’t focus on everything you need to do. That is way too overwhelming. After you finish your first list, if you have the energy and headspace, you can move on. If you don’t have the energy and headspace, then stop. Put it away for tomorrow. Of course, there are some responsibilities that must be

selves the time to go back a few steps and think about what really needs to be done today, we may come up with nothing or much less than we imagined. If the answer is nothing “needs” to be done today, then we can ask ourselves, what do we “want” to do today and deliberately make our plans from there. Let’s say a family is on vacation and they visit an amusement park. The entrance fee is hefty and they want to get their money’s worth. In his mind, the father decides they have to go on six big rides. But what happens if after three rides, the kids are tired? The parents need to reassess. Why did we go on vacation? To have fun family time together. In that case, skip the six big rides and the rest of the long list and take the kids back to the hotel to unwind.

People who come from chaotic childhood backgrounds tend to seek chaos in their adult lives. taken care of in a specific time frame and we don’t have the luxury of putting it off until tomorrow. Nevertheless, most things we feel we must do right this minute, in fact do not have to be done right this minute. Those are the activities we need to figure out how to prioritize. Sometimes when we allow our-

SEEKING CHAOS Another interesting phenomenon that I see in my practice is that people who come from chaotic childhood

backgrounds, where there was always some drama going on in their lives, tend to seek chaos in their adult lives. It’s as if they don’t feel alive unless they’re living in chaos. These people often set up impossible tasks for themselves and feel overwhelmed when they realize they can’t possibly achieve them. Individuals from trauma backgrounds with low self-esteem also often tend to run away from themselves to chaos because they can’t look at themselves.

‫מה‬ ‫שאלתך‬ ‫ומה‬ ‫בקשתך‬

Leibush grew up in extreme poverty. He had practically no memory of his father since he was out all day working (or supposedly working). Leibush’s memory of his mother was as an overworked, frazzled lady who had no time for him or the rest of his siblings and was constantly reprimanding him for everything he did wrong. When Leibush came to me, he was overwhelmed with his family responsibilities, his work responsibilities and his communal re-

sponsibilities. Before we could work on stepping back, evaluating the situation and making a list of priorities, we had to do the work of clearing out his chaotic background trauma. He had no idea that he was even attracted to chaos but once we did the work, he was able to recognize how and why he was drawn to it.

Whether we feel the garden variety kind of overwhelm or the more intense overwhelm that stems from trauma, the solution will always begin with recognizing how we are feeling and then going from there to take the necessary steps to work it through. The key is understanding that overwhelm does not have to be a way of life. With the right tools, life can be lived with a modicum of calmness and peace.

FLAKY FISH While this dish seems complicated and intricate to prepare, don’t be fooled; it should not take longer than 20 minutes to get this fish into its costume. Wow! The board used is a 36”x15” piece of wood.

INGREDIENTS 1 side of salmon with tail end 1 pkg. flaky dough (2 sheets) ½ cup shakshuka sauce* 2 T. honey ½ tsp. salt *Shakshuka sauce is an Isreali shelf-stable product that comes in a square, cup-like container.

DIRECTIONS 1. Place the salmon in a parchment-lined roaster pan. 2. Combine shakshuka sauce with honey and salt, and spread over the fish. 3. Use a 2-inch round cookie cutter to cut circles of flaky dough. Cut each circle in half. 4. Use a sharp knife to cut a semicircle and tail from the flaky dough to create a head and tail, proportionate to the size of the fish. (Use the picture as a guide). 5. Place the tail onto the bottom part of the fish. The tail should extend onto the parchment paper. 6. Arrange the scales over the fish in a slightly overlapping manner. 7. Place the semicircle of flaky dough in a separate pan. 8. Preheat the oven to 400°. 9. Bake uncovered. Remove the flaky dough semicircle “head” after 10 to 12 minutes, and leave the entire fish for 45 minutes until the flaky dough is puffed and golden. Allow the fish to cool. 10. Transfer it very carefully onto a platter. 11. Arrange vegetables of your choice around the fish along with bowls of dips. The dips used are from Glatt Geshmak and include: spicy olives, roasted pepper, jalapeno, eggplant babaganoush and toasted sesame. 12. Cut a mouth out of the baked head using sharp kitchen shears. Use a craisin for the eye.

MARINATED FISH Marinated fish lasts up to two weeks in the fridge, making it a perfect choice for Purim, when many don’t know how many guests to prepare for. Since this fish gets prepared without the bones, I stuffed the center of the fish with gefilte fish to give it some body. This dish should ideally be marinated for a minimum of 24 hours before serving.

INGREDIENTS 1 ½ ¾ 2 2

(approx. 7 lb.) whole salmon fish, deboned tsp. salt, for inside the fish of a roll gefilte fish, defrosted onions carrots

MARINADE 3½ cups sugar 1¼ cups vinegar ½ cup lemon juice 2 T. salt 1 tsp. whole allspice 1 tsp. black pepper 12–14 bay leaves 6 cups water

DIRECTIONS 1. Place 1 cup of water into a deep roaster pan. 2. Line the pan with parchment paper. 3. Combine marinade ingredients, and place into roaster along with onions and carrots. Bring to a boil over two flames. 4. Preheat the oven to 450°. 5. Clean fish, if necessary and rinse the fish very well. Spread approximately ½ teaspoon salt inside of the fish. 6. Pat raw gefilte fish mixture inside, placing most of it in the center of the fish. Place the fish carefully into the boiling liquid. Cover tightly. 7. Transfer the pan to the oven. Cover and bake for 30 minutes, and then lower the heat to 350° and cook for an additional 45 to 60 minutes. 8. Garnish with assorted crackers, egg kichel and condiments such as olives, pickled onions and hot pepper.

Chazal teach us a fascinating lesson (Rosh Hashanah 4a): “One who says, ‘I am giving this money to tzedakah on condition that my child lives or so that I am rewarded in Olam Haba,’ is a tzaddik gamur.” Not just a tzaddik, but a tzaddik gamur! If you pay attention while the speakers do their thing at tzedakah dinners, you’ve certainly heard some insightful commentaries on this peculiar Gemara. But I would maintain that the simplest reason is enough to explain the Gemara’s position. Tzedakah is about results — a person in dire straits is provided with what he needs — and the intent or motivation of the giver matters very little, or not at all. Giving tzedakah feels good. It also comes with brochures-full of promises for a world of yeshuos. Sometimes there are even accolades and public praise attached to it. And in our wonderful country, it comes with the cherry on 278

the top: sweet, sweet tax deductions. But who can keep track of every donation and receipt, especially during the heavy Purim rush? The simple solution to this dilemma — coupons from charitable foundations — eventually developed into a world of its own, and has in recent years changed the face of tzedakah-giving completely. Every Purim, the percentage of donations distributed in coupons keeps on rising. What was once a novelty now fills the hands of meshulachim, bachurim and gabbai tzedakah. This week, we sat down to learn more about this growing phenomenon. Read on for an informative behind-

the-scenes conversation with Aron Schlesinger, managing director at The Donors’ Fund — one of the premier institutions of its kind. Can you briefly describe what The Donors’ Fund is?

We are a public charitable foundation where people deposit their tzedakah funds in greater sums, with the ability to distribute these funds as they see fit over the ensuing months and years. Donors can submit as much and as little as they want, and can later recommend any grant amounts to charities. Think of us — in theory — as your special tzedakah bank account. Why don’t people just donate directly from their own account?

There are many benefits to such an arrangement, but the easiest and most straightforward reason for what is known as a DAF (Donor-Advised Fund) is to make things easier when filing taxes. The entire endowment donors put in is immediately tax deductible despite not being distributed until lat-

er on. It also helps ensure that every donation is actually properly applied as a deduction. For our non-tax-expert readers, can you please elaborate and provide some background?

Sure. The government requires us to pay taxes on all the income we earn. However, money that we donate to charity is tax deductible. For people who donate a large amount of tzedakah, it is hard, or perhaps impossible, to keep track of every transaction and hold each receipt for the requisite seven years demanded by the IRS. So the government allowed donors to create foundations where they dump their entire charitable contribution so they can receive the tax deduction immediately. They cannot withdraw money from the foundation, only distribute it to eligible charities.

EXPRESS YOUR CREATIVITY IN GRAPHICS

But these are all private foundations, correct?

Correct. In addition, the government also allows for public foundations (DAFs) that anyone can contribute to. All the major investment firms offer them to their clients, and people will often deposit huge sums for their tax deduction, and just let it sit there for years. It’s gotten so bad that they are considering legislation to require that funds be distributed within fourteen years… What happens with the funds during these years?

In the case of the aforementioned foundations, the managers take a fee of about 2% each year, and the fund is more than happy to see the money sit and do nothing. They will often invest the money and see it appreciate over time as well. How is The Donors’ Fund different in this regard?

For starters, we represent a community that wants to give tzedakah. They just need the right vehicle to make it work. Unlike others, we don’t take an annual fee, or any fee for that matter, because we don’t want to be incentivized to serve as a place for holding money. And because we’re designed for giving, our processes are incredibly simple and streamlined, unlike what you’ll see in the secular world where each donation involves an entire bureaucratic process. What happens after individuals open an account with you?

We provide them with checks that can be preprinted with amounts or ordered blank. We also give users a card that works like a debit card — the processing fees are actually where we cover our expenses. Lastly, our service boasts a user-friendly platform that works as seamlessly as QuickPay or PayPal and allows users to send money within seconds. The checks, cards and online payments can be given to any registered charity, and the money is then distributed by our charity fund. In addition to the tax issues previously mentioned, why do ba’alei tzedakah choose to utilize a DAF?

There are many practical benefits, but the most obvious one is that it significantly simplifies the giving of tzedakah and lets users keep track of how much tzedakah they give and where. I’ve seen people who no longer require a gab-

bai tzedakah because they can now tell collectors, “Send me a Donors’ Fund request, and I’ll review it.” With the click of a button, they can determine whether to give and how much. We also offer a number of services that are attractive to donors. For example, we allow for the investing of funds that is integrated with a donor’s own wealth manager so that people can choose where the tzedakah money is invested during the time it is in the fund. We’ve also made it a priority to develop the most highly sophisticated platform for tracking, depositing, setting up recurring donations, investing and more, with great results, baruch Hashem. What is the Purim season like for you?

Oh, it’s by far the heaviest time of the year. Many utilize our services just for this one day, with donations more likely to be handed out in smaller increments. Can you share how many checks are processed by The Donors’ Fund over Purim?

Over a million individual checks! Their amounts range from a single dollar to thousands of dollars. It’s staggering to behold the amount of tzedakah donated at this time of year. 280

How many people are involved in your operation?

We have a staff of nine, and are hopeful for more, b’ezras Hashem. Once people experience donating through a system like ours, there’s no going back. What impact has your work had on the tzedakah world?

It’s a completely different era. As big a change as online tzedakah campaigns have brought about, this isn’t far behind. It has taken something that was limited by a lack of accommodating infrastructure and taken it to a level once hard to imagine. How about the impact on tzedakah recipients?

It goes hand in hand. Donors give with confidence knowing that legitimate tzedakah is handed out. While we are on this subject, there’s one fascinating story I wish to share: One day I received an email in my inbox addressed to someone whose name I did not recognize. The email was from an unpronounceable name, and the sender identified themselves as someone from Swiss Federal Railway asking if I lost an item. I was certain it was spam, but something told me that I should maybe look again to see if there’s any way it may be rele-

vant. I searched the invaluable meshulachim database that we update regularly, and found a match for the name the email was addressed to. I began contacting references listed under this name, and after a long string of calls and messages, I finally reached the man himself. It turned out that he was traveling to a number of countries to raise money for his family, and while on a Swiss train, his tallis bag, along with the thousands of dollars he raised, were stolen from him. He immediately filed a report, but it appeared that there was nothing the authorities could do to help. A little later his tallis bag turned up with everything intact! The kind railway folks had no idea whom it belonged to and there was no identifying information. Eventually, they stumbled upon a check from The Donors’ Fund and contacted us to redeem the package. It was great to experience another way in which The Donors’ Fund was able to help a Yid in need. I’m going to let you go now. I assume you have more pressing things to get to.

I’m blessed to be doing what I do. This time of the year is incredibly busy, but as long as I can make it to shul in time for megillah-leining, I’ll consider it a success!

WHEN A NEW LANDSCAPING BUSINESS OPENED ITS DOORS IN FORTALEZA, THE CAPITAL CITY OF THE STATE OF CEARÁ, BRAZIL, NOBODY BLINKED AN EYE. GRAMA SINTÉTICA (TRANSLATION: SYNTHETIC TURF), AS THE COMPANY WAS CALLED, WAS PURPORTED TO SELL BOTH ARTIFICIAL AND NATURAL GRASS, AS WELL AS PLANTS. LITTLE DID THE NEIGHBORS KNOW THAT THE LANDSCAPING BUSINESS WAS JUST A FRONT FOR A FAR MORE PROFITABLE VENTURE: BANK ROBBERY.

AUGUST 8, 2005, 8 A.M. FO R TA L E Z A ,

Monday morning began as any other for the employees at Banco Central. The bank had been closed over the weekend, and the first customers of the week would soon come bustling in, ready to cash checks, deposit funds, and take care of all their banking needs. Before the workers could open the doors, however, they were met with a tremendous shock: Banco Central, one of the most secure banks in Brazil, had been robbed. What was especially alarming was that the security team hadn’t picked up on any nefarious activity over the weekend; somehow, the motion sensors had been completely bypassed, the cameras hadn’t recorded the robbery, and the cash vault remained sealed from the outside. Using incredible precision, the robbers had managed to make a hole in the floor of the vault, which led away from the bank. Through this tunnel, the thieves had carted off the equivalent of more than $70 million dollars in Brazilian currency. It was a clean and bloodless bank robbery that left Brazil reeling. FAKE GRASS, BONA FIDE ROBBERS

Several months before the break-in, the head honcho of the operation, known as “The German,” rented a house two blocks away from Banco Central. The front of the house was painted green, and a van bearing the logo of Grama Sintética was parked on the property. To the neighbors, the company appeared to be a legitimate business, doing 290

exactly what landscapers do best: working with earthly elements. Every day, trucks filled with dirt could be seen leaving the property, supposedly headed toward a job site in need of their cargo. Little did the neighbors know that the “staff” of the gardening company was actually a combination of lowlife thieves and disreputable professionals who had been lured into the underworld by a thirst for riches. “The German” had specifically chosen a civil engineer to join the team of robbers, counting on his technical skills to pull off the planned robbery. Likewise, a foreman (nicknamed “Armadillo” due to his digging skills) was also brought into the gang. An unscrupulous security guard was also enlisted, and it was he who provided vital information about the bank’s security, as well as blueprints for the bank’s layout, enabling the engineer and the contractor to plan the perfect heist. With the talent secured, the plan kicked into action. Deep below the hustle and bustle of city streets, excavation

began on a tunnel more than 250 feet in length. This underground tunnel led from a back bedroom in the rented house to Banco Central, carefully snaking its way around the city’s piping. The 28-inch-wide tunnel was masterfully constructed and boasted wooden beams, electrical lights, plastic lining to prevent debris from falling, and even an air conditioning and ventilation system. Police estimate that it cost nearly $200,000 to construct. Once the tunnel was complete, the actual operation was scheduled. It was to take place on Saturday, August 6, 2005, when the bank would be closed. This would give the crew enough time to break in and get away without fear of being caught red-handed. On that day, they would tackle the final obstacle: a nearly four-foot-thick steel-reinforced concrete barrier separating them from the cash. When the time came, they used sophisticated tools to break through the barrier and into the most coveted area: the cash vault. The thieves rigged a pulley system to lower the cash from the vault through the 13-foot drop to the tunnel’s floor. Then they transported the money along the underground tunnel to the rented house and carted it away. By the time the robbery was discovered, the bandits had long escaped. FOLLOWING THE TRAIL

Before the robbers left, they took care to wash down the house with burned lime, a caustic substance that would destroy any fingerprints. Despite their precautions, however, a single fingerprint remained, giving police their first clue to work with. Other slip-ups were also discovered. 292

A prepaid phone card was found inside the tunnel, having fallen from a robber’s pocket, leading police to wiretap the cellphone that had been used in conjunction with it. The biggest clue, however, came from a foolish robber who splurged on ten vehicles the very next day, raising eyebrows. When police caught up to him, he spilled the beans, describing the elaborate plot in detail. All in all, 43 people were arrested in this heist that is considered one of the greatest bank robberies of all time. Unfortunately, the majority of the money was never recovered and only some of the criminals involved were apprehended…

ROBBERIES

RIDICULOUS 294

The Monsey View

For some bandits, bank robbery seems too formidable. After all, how many bank robbers actually get away with the loot and manage to live out the rest of their lives on the more pleasant side of jail bars? Few, indeed. But madmen exist even where the lure of cold, hard cash isn’t to be had. For some, a life of crime is tempting even when they’ll have to work a bit harder to convert the goods to currency…

NOT-SO-EASYBREEZY CHEESY THEFTS 2016 was a year that brought Wisconsin, known as “America’s Dairyland,” into sharp focus over an absurd form of robbery: the swindling of cheese. Not once, but three times, cheese thieves made away with tractor-trailers full of the delicious dairy products. In one instance, a single truckload carried $90,000 of pilfered parmesan.

NOT FOR SQUEAMISH STEALERS One thief decided to go all out and gather more than $40,000 worth of creepy crawlies from the Philadelphia Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion in 2018. Nearly 7,000 creatures were abducted in the robbery, likely headed for the black market.

TERRIBLE TROUBLE WITH THE TRUFFLE TRADE Prized for their unique flavor, real truffles fetch a pretty penny in the restaurant industry. White truffles can retail anywhere from $2,000 to nearly $7,000 for a single kilogram (2.2 pounds). For this reason, thieves have turned to truffles as the golden mushroom, trusting such loot to fill their pockets. Back in 2005, robbers broke through the roof and climbed into a truffle warehouse in Provence, France, using night-vision goggles and rope ladders to reach their target. In the end, they made away with $100,000 worth of edible fungus.

Bustling hives are prized by farmers who need bees to pollinate their plants. Though some maintain their own bee colonies, many rent these out just for the season. For this reason, raising bees is a lucrative business for those who choose to invest in beekeeping. Unfortunately, some people want the gains without putting in the effort. In 2017, a man was arrested for pilfering hives throughout the Sacramento region of California, stealing bees in a failed get-rich quick scheme. The hives he stole were worth nearly $900,000.

REMEMBER BEANIE BABIES?

Sadly for Ty, the manufacturer of Beanie Babies, a lot of 60,000 toys was swiped from the warehouse one day, totalling about $300,000 worth of goods. A 77-year-old man was later found with more than 1,200 Beanie Babies in his possession, but he claimed to have bought them at a flea market… Whatever the case, maybe someone should have told him that Beanie Babies are for kids?

WEEK 4 OF A 4-WEEK SERIES

KIDS AND THEIR MONEY By: Gelly Asovski, LCSW-R, RPT-S

Forbes Advisor recommends that kids should know three important concepts when it comes to money: spending, saving and giving. In today’s world, however, children don’t always see cash being used when parents make purchases at the store; therefore, money can be intangible to them. They may think spending is as simple as swiping a card or ordering from Amazon, without realizing that there is a bill that needs to be paid at the end of the month. Money needs to be “real” in a child’s eyes in order for them to understand the concept of spending, saving and giving tzedakah. Otherwise, it’s quite hard to teach our children the value of money and how money works. In a world of exciting advertisements, kids may see what money can buy, but not necessarily how money is earned. That’s why they don’t understand the value of money and may demand that their parents buy them things that are not within a typical family’s budget. When I was a child, I was excited to mow lawns and shovel snow like my brothers to earn myself $10 per lawn. We also used to babysit for $4 an hour, which eventually rose to $6 as I got older, though we 298

were taught to accept money in the first place only if the neighbor absolutely insisted on paying us for our time. Likewise, I did the weekly grocery shopping for my family on Fridays, walking to the store with a shopping cart all year round, without the expectation that I can buy myself a treat. I’d then watch as my father reviewed the long grocery bill to make sure there were no mistakes. That’s how I learned all about

spending, saving, giving and budgeting. What important lessons! All these experiences taught me that money doesn’t grow on trees. I learned that if you work hard, you will earn money. Then I learned about the mitzvah of maaser, setting aside 10% of my hard-earned money for tzedakah. I put my money in the local gemach and pinched off a little bit to indulge myself by buying a treat. None of this work ethic hurt me. In fact, it taught me to understand and use money in a healthy way. How do your children feel about money? Do they understand the value of money, or do they believe there’s a money tree growing outside your window? Of course, how your children view money has a lot to do with how you handle money as a parent. Kids constantly watch their parents and learn lifelong lessons about how to use or abuse money in real life. For many parents, indulging and spoiling children is a sign of being a “good” parent and can also be a way to

HOW DO YOUR CHILDREN FEEL ABOUT MONEY? DO THEY UNDERSTAND THE VALUE OF MONEY, OR DO THEY BELIEVE THERE’S A MONEY TREE GROWING OUTSIDE YOUR WINDOW?

make up for a history of childhood deprivation. For others, pinching every penny is a response to modernday consumerism, and frankly, may be necessary when raising a big family. In my experience, balance seems hard for today’s generation when it comes to the topic of kids and money. Nowadays, children are living a different life than I lived growing up. Money doesn’t have the same value that it used to have 30 to 40 years ago. Yet, at the risk of sounding old-fashioned,, I am not a believer in allowances for children. Kids should know that they get all their needs met by their parents. If they want extra money, children can do the work the cleaning lady does after their basic helping chores are done. They can find ways to make themselves useful at home or have a little job to earn money. Overall, it’s important to remember that you are not doing your kids a favor by giving them everything their heart desires. On the other hand, deprived children may not know how to handle money once they earn their own paycheck. Such children tend to be at a major disadvantage when they are suddenly free to spend money as they see fit. So how to make this work? The answer is balance. If you are living on a tighter budget, it is important to teach your children how to live in today’s world so they don’t feel “less than” because of their family circumstances. A little splurge for Shabbos or a moderately priced outing or vacation will help them feel “normal” while teaching them the value of using money judiciously. And if money is not an issue for 300

you and your family, it is still important to teach your children the value of money and help them develop good financial habits of spending, saving, giving and budgeting. A child can know that their family is well off while still respecting the basic rules of money. A child should be taught not to show off and never to feel like they are “better than” because of money. This time of year, many parents debate the virtues of “buying” their children’s nosh after Purim. My first instinct is to say to let your kids enjoy their bounty like you would have wanted it all when you were a kid. However, you know your child and what they can tolerate in terms of junk. You know your child’s teeth, as well. There is no right or wrong answer to the Purim junk dilemma, but I hesitate to recommend paying kids to give up their nosh. You can always put the nosh toward a Shabbos party for the next couple of weeks, as chometz needs to disappear soon anyway. For best results, healthy attitudes toward money should be present from when a child is young. Here are some ideas that teach lessons about money while allowing for children to have a well-deserved treat.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Create a family jar on the kitchen counter for all the extra change that typically lies around the house. When the jar is full, you can buy something special for your family with the money.

Hang a family chart on the kitchen wall for helping, sharing or doing mitzvos. Each square on the Candyland-style chart earns another quarter toward a family prize or outing. Watch the quarters add up as each family member participates and works their way toward the goal. For motivational charts (e.g., bedtime), I recommend using money instead of bribing children with prizes. You can give a child a quarter a day, which they can use to buy something special l’kavod Shabbos. Using positive incentives, and ignoring the negative really works! As a fun outing, give your kids $1 to $2 to spend at the dollar store — and let them decide how to use their money. This will turn out to be a fun lesson on making choices and budgeting.

Set up each child with a gemach account or bank account, and teach them the value of saving the money they get on Chanukah, Purim, birthdays and other occasions.

TEENS’ AND CHILDREN’S BEDROOMS Hi, readers! When it comes to the rooms in your house, you get to be the designated decision maker. And then comes the teens’ room. What looks to you like an overgrown furry animal might actually be a prized possession waiting to be turned into an exclusive art design (okay… slight exaggeration, but you get my drift), and that’s only the first thing on the shelf. Cleaning a children’s room, on the other hand, can be done on your own (which would be the fastest method), although you may choose to recruit your children’s help to create some special bonding time — but give yourself an extra hour or so for that option. Personally, I like to do the cleaning myself, and the decluttering part together with

my kids. That way, they can have a say about what stays and what goes. However, my kids know that Mommy has a say in the matter too. I generally use hair brushes to help me belt out tunes while cleaning. Needless to say, my neighbors love this time of year. They have the best entertainment!

Prep List: GARBAGE BAGS GLOVES SHMATTES/DUST CLOTHS/DIAPERS BROOM, SHOVEL, MOP, DUSTER, VACUUM CLEANER WINDOW CLEANER: WINDEX (NO-DRIP STREAK). YOU CAN USE IT FOR MIRRORS AS WELL. WIPE CLOCKWISE WITH NEWSPAPER FOR A STREAK-FREE SHINE. MILD CLEANSER: MR. CLEAN MULTI-SURFACE ANTIBACTERIAL CLEANER IS A FAVORITE IN MY HOME. FURNITURE POLISH: FOR THE TEENS’/KIDS’ ROOM, I LIKE USING PLEDGE LEMON CLEAN FURNITURE SPRAY. FLOOR CLEANER: BONA HARDWOOD FLOOR CLEANER CONTAINERS, DIVIDERS, HANGERS

Goal: Declutter, clean and organize — in that order. 1. BEDDING AND CURTAINS I start every bedroom the same way! Strip the linen and wash in the machine. Remove bedding. Air out bedding or wash as per instructions. Remove curtains. Wash the curtains after the linen cycle has finished. Keep the machine busy! 2. CLOSET AND DRAWERS As in the master bedroom, the closets will take up the bulk of your time. Leave an hour and a half for decluttering and organizing, and a half-hour for cleanup. a. EMPTY CONTENTS: Once the beds are stripped, lay a plastic tablecloth on the bare mattress. (If you choose not to, don’t worry — your shvigger will never know. Okay, that’s an old joke, but she really will not know.) Empty the closet onto the mattress. If your children are there to help you sort their stuff, work with one child at a time. b. SORT: One garbage bag is for damaged clothing and

308

shoes — or accessories that don’t seem to serve any particular purpose. Another garbage bag is for stuff to be donated. If there is something you want to keep that your daughter doesn’t want to, or vice-versa, put it in a separate pile. When you’re done sorting everything else, get back to that pile, and you’ll win some and lose some. c. ORGANIZE: Designate a place for everything: Clothing should all be hung facing one direction. The following order gives the neatest appearance: long robes, dresses, blazers, shirts, bulky sweatshirts, tops that need hanging, and skirts. Coats and rain jackets belong in the coat closet. Seasonal items belong in storage. Delicate sweaters, shells and thin tops should be folded and arranged according to style, color or type. Shoes: I firmly believe that as much as teenagers want (sorry, I mean need) lots of shoes, it’s actually the

number-one item that clutters up a closet. I highly recommend a shoe rack. There are loads to choose from! If you don’t have space for all of your shoes, then you don’t need so many. If you have shelves in your closets, get bins for your hosiery, etc. If you have drawers, get dividers. Get a hanger for your belts, or place a few hooks along the inside of the closet wall. Designate one shelf or drawer for your childrens’ paraphernalia. I give one bin to each child. Nice knick-knacks can be displayed on the dresser or desk, but don’t overdo it; you don’t want the surfaces getting crowded and more difficult to dust. HOOKS CAN BE USED FOR ANYTHING! I LOVE THEM FOR SCARVES, BELTS, NECKLACES, ETC.

3. CEILINGS AND WALLS Dust the ceiling, paying attention to those corners! Depending on what light fixture you have, you may want to take it down or just wash with a gentle cleanser. Make sure it is completely dry before putting it back. If you have any wall art, never spray cleaner directly on the frame. Wipe down with a slightly damp rag. Dust blinds with a damp cloth. Wash windows and windowsills. The curtains should be out of the machine by now; hang them up. 4. FURNITURE Turn over mattresses for even wear. Clean bed frame. Move beds. Clean under bed. Dust and polish the dresser, drawers, nightstand and lamps. Ah! The linen smells fresh and clean. Your kids can help you with putting the linen back on. Pillow fights are allowed at this time ‘cause you’re almost done! 5. FLOOR Sweep, dust and mop hardwood floors. Spot treat for mildly soiled carpets — try Resolve Triple-Oxi Advanced. It’s so much fun working with all of you! Send in before and after pictures of your children’s room, and you will enter a drawing for a chance to win a free consultation!

Catch you next week!

Armored walls, an airtight door and a complex lock — the makings of a bank vault. As burglars figured out ways to break into vaults, vault design grew every more sophisticated to thwart them. Read about the race between banks and robbers, and some other golden nuggets about giant safe rooms. The Post–Gold Rush Vault Rush Some disappointed prospectors who failed to find gold during the Gold Rush of 1849 resorted to break into banks in their quest for gold. It was simple to get their hands on the cash. All they had to do was break into a bank using a hammer, and remove the entire bank safe through the window.

Current Vault Designs The first thing banks do when designing their space is build the vault. Each one is made by custom order to the specifications of the site. The rest of the bank architecture is built around the vault. Today, vaults are constructed with thinner, lighter materials that are easier to dismantle, but are still considered strong.

Banks required — and demanded — more protection, so safe makers came up with stable, unmovable vaults. Original vault rooms were made of steel-reinforced concrete, with 1-foot-thick walls and 3.5-foot-thick doors.

Cash On-Site? Your average small bank in the United States keeps $50,000 in their vault. Larger banks may keep as much as $200,000 on-site. Banks must hold between 3% to 15% of their cash in reserve, in case depositors want to withdraw cash from their accounts. Most banks stash the rest of their funds in federal reserves. In 2019, the average bank robbery netted $4,213 per offense, indicating that a relatively small amount of cash is held in the tellers’ registers. 312

Experts in the field admit: “There is no such thing as an uncrackable safe, for everything that man can make someone else can break.” Wealthy Dining, Shopping or Vacationing Old-time vaults were built so strong, they’re practically impossible to dismantle even today. Some were transformed into other venues, giving the public the opportunity for a bank-themed visit. TRINITY PLACE, FINANCIAL DISTRICT, NYC: In 1904, it was advertised as the world’s largest and strongest bank vault, commissioned by Andrew Carnegie. Today, a restaurant operates inside it, giving customers a genuine Wall Street culinary experience. MUSEUM ON THE MOUND, EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND: Here visitors have a chance to try and crack the vault code while exploring this museum on anything money in Scotland. There is a tempting display of 1 million pounds that nobody ever wins. CLOTHING SHOP, VENTURA, CA: Shoppers enjoy feeling rich as they try on new purchases in this repurposed bank vault.

17 HOURS The average person who gets trapped inside a bank vault will not survive longer than that.

497,000 This is the total of gold bars housed in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the world’s largest known depository of monetary gold, in 2019.

91 TONS Weight of the largest vault door in the world, at the Federal Reserve Bank Vault of Cleveland, OH.

TOP 5 FORT KNOX, TENNESSEE As a springboard off the world’s allegedly safest vault, “to be like Fort Knox” means to be inaccessible, guarded and solidly secure. The United States Bullion Depository, aka Fort Knox, stores a vast amount of the country’s gold. It is nestled in the middle of a large army base. No single person can penetrate the complex, as each staff member knows but a fragment of the general security puzzle. The safety and security measures are broad, deep and highly classified. SVALBARD GLOBAL SEED VAULT, SPITSBERGEN, NORWAY Some 620 miles south of the North Pole lies a treasury of more than 500,000 global plant species. It is safeguarded by hundreds of miles of ocean and loads of polar bears. TEIKOKU BANK, HIROSHIMA, JAPAN The vault built in this bank was strong enough to withstand the impact of the atom bomb! When Hiroshima was hit by the atom bomb in 1945, the vault — and the cash it contained — remained standing in place. FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF NEW YORK, NYC Foreigners must trust U.S. security, as some 25% of the world’s gold is entrusted in this federal vault, a sunken three-story bunker just blocks away from Wall Street. Only 2% of the stash is American. (The rest is owned by central banks of foreign nations.) TOWER OF LONDON, ENGLAND Perhaps this vault wouldn’t make it onto most top-five lists of secure bank vaults… but it is a rather fascinating one. Visitors to the Tower of London can take a look at the rare British crown jewels, which are housed in the Jewel House vault. There are more than 100 hidden cameras observing the visitors, and the jewels are encased in bomb-proof glass. The Tower Guard watches over the site, alongside the Yeoman Warders and the Tower Wardens.
