Long COVID: post-COVID Syndrome What is Long COVID? What happens when COVID symptoms don’t go away? For most people, mild to moderate COVID symptoms of fatigue, body aches, sweating and even headaches go away after 2 weeks. However, in some people who recover from COVID, persistent health problems can wreak havoc for months. This is called Long COVID or shortly “Long-Haulers” (ie people who do not clear COVID symptoms out of their system). What are the signs of lingering COVID in your body (> 8 weeks after first infection)? According to the CDC, the most common lasting symptoms are tiredness, shortness of breath, cough, joint pain and chest pain. Other issues include mental problems such as difficulty concentrating (brain fog), depression, headaches, rapid heartbeat and even difficult sleeping.
Treatment of Long-term COVID Still feeling tired or having trouble focusing two months after your COVID infection? IV hydration or a Vitamin infusion may help you recover faster. IV Fluids drip: Hydration is essential for the immune system to function properly and help our bodies to recover from illness. IV hydration can provide your body with an efficient way to replenish, restore and detoxify. IV hydration can help reduce body aches, mental fog and general fatigue. Hydration with IV fluids is provided via intravenous drip as treatment for fluid loss in which a sterile water solution containing small amounts of salt or sugar drips directly into the patient’s bloodstream. IV Vitamin Drip: Current medical literature suggests that high doses of Vitamin C by infusion may reduce the lingering inflammation in the body after COVID infection. In addition, intravenous Vitamin C might cool down other persistent COVID related immune responses that may result in the symptoms of Long COVID. Vitamin B complex might improve neurological symptoms of Long COVID such as brain fog and difficult sleeping. (Frontiers in Immunology 11:574029) IV drip infusion with Vitamin C or Vitamin B supplements has anti-inflammatory effects and may balance the immune system response. Our state-of-the-art infusion center is staffed with experienced medical providers who can administer your IV hydration and high dose Vitamin C or B infusion in a clean, safe, and monitored environment. Helping you get back on your feet after COVID with a high standard of care is our goal. For more information or to get screened for an appointment, call The Infusion Team at Monsey Health at 845-352-6800 ext 3847

BENEFITS FOR ME
(Re: The Paper Shortage Update, Letter, Issue 337) I saw the letter about the paper shortage and paper-quality changes. I want to comment that I happen to like your new pages. The text is easier to read since there’s no glare, as occurs with glossy pages, and they’re so much smoother to write on. Now I get to enjoy the sudoku puzzles — which I love! — fully. The newsprint is of great quality, and I like this new change. Y.S. THE MONSEY VIEW RESPONDS: Thank you for your comment. We are happy to note that you are enjoying the temporary change. However, our goal is to revert to our high-quality, glossy print as soon as we can and continue printing on the level of quality that we pride ourselves with.

(Re: My Life With Misophonia, Issue 334) As someone who suffers from misophonia, I was desperate to find something that could help me tolerate all the noise around me, and now I want others to know that there may be help. There are natural products out there that can offer a lot of relief, even if they don’t entirely cure one of this sensitivity. Having seen relief myself, I can say with certainty that it’s definitely worthwhile to give a health food store a call. A Fellow Misophonic
REACTIONS AND RESPONSES
(Re: Misophonia Letters, Inbox) I’d like to respond to the letters that came in regarding my original letter that suggested exposure therapy as a cure for miso sufferers. It is clear from the letters that both writers do not fully understand how exposure therapy works. The fault lies with me as I only touched upon it very briefly in my original letter. Exposure therapy means voluntarily exposing yourself to the trigger of your extreme pain or panic or discomfort and not engaging in a single protective behavior. If you’re sitting in the company of people who are eating, and you’re grimacing inwardly and rejecting the exposure and hoping it will stop, you are engaging in passive protective behavior. If you excuse yourself for a moment to get relief from the pain or panic, you are actively engaging in protective behavior. So to the letter writer who says that miso sufferers have spent their whole life in a setting of exposure and the exposure did nothing to reduce their pain, I want to point out that while that technically fits the definition of exposure, it has nothing much to do with the definition of exposure therapy. First, because the behavior is not voluntary, and second, because the protective behavior has not been given up completely. Exposure therapy is most effective when the person embraces the exposure experience and lets the trigger’s effect (panic, extreme pain or discomfort) go all over her without engaging in a single protective behavior. To prevent oneself from engaging in passive protective behavior, one must work on welcoming and embracing the response/effect of the trigger. For example, when you subject yourself to the awful sound of crunching, and the shivers and panic envelops you, just try to enjoy or at least act as if you are enjoying the negative feelings. Embracing these negative feelings and allowing them to go all over you may make these feelings even worse at first. For example, if until now you went into a panic level of 10 when you heard the sound of crunching snacks, now your panic level may reach 20. But the good news is that when you come to that point of extreme panic, you are usually at the threshold of having the response burn out of you, either permanently or for a good deal of time. Once you cure yourself of your panic, it is important to THE MONSEY VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS.

continue exposing yourself to the trigger so you don’t build back up the intolerance. You did it once? Dive right in again. A Fellow Sufferer raises skepticism about applying exposure therapy to overcome sensitivity to the cold. Well, a person certainly cannot do flooding therapy in such a situation, where he exposes himself fully to the cold until his discomfort burns out. That’s because he will be killed from hypothermia at the same time that his discomfort burns out. However, short, frequent periods of exposure therapy, done in a safe manner, can be highly effective in conquering one’s discomfort in cold weather. In fact, there is a person named Wim Hof who has made it his mission to conquer the cold and indulges in absolutely mind-blowing stunts. One of the “secrets” behind his ability to withstand extreme cold temperatures, to the point of swimming under ice-capped lakes, is exposure therapy. One way Hof exposes himself to the cold is by jumping into freezing cold showers for one minute at a time. Then, as his mind panics and the fight-or-flight response turns on, he works on quieting that hysterical voice inside himself and relaxing. Which brings me to the point raised in S.’s letter. S. wonders how I can be so callous as to suggest exposure therapy for a “brain-based disorder that causes a fight-or-flight response to mundane everyday sounds”. Dear S., please understand that exposure therapy is actually the most, or at least one of the most, effective therapies for conditions that trigger a fight-or-flight response in the brain. The goal of exposure therapy is to turn off that unwarranted fight-or-flight response for good. This is exactly why I think it should be very effective in healing misophonia. Unfortunately, we have been led to believe that everything that can be found or measured biologically must have a biological solution. This way of thinking has already caused an enormous amount of destruction in ourselves and in our children, but this is an entirely different subject that is deserving of its own letter. It’s true that exposure therapy is callous. It’s extremely painful, and you need to gather a lot of courage to actually submit yourself to this treatment. A simpler and more effective solution to getting out of the clutches of bothersome sensitivities is to reach out to Hashem. Hashem waits for us to bother him with our big and little problems so he can generate refuos and yeshuos. Remember that exposure therapy is only one path in nature that has shown good results. Perhaps other paths exist or will be found, with siyata d’Shmaya. For now I will end by saying that indeed many people do handle their misophonia with great sensitivity to others, as both A Fellow Sufferer and S. have demonstrated in their letters. If your husband has to ask you why your spoon is not touching the bowl then you obviously have not burdened him or others with your sensitivities. Kol hakavod to you and others like yourself. With great appreciation for The Monsey View’s positive and interactive forum, Chana Horowitz DISCLAIMER: Letters featured in the Inbox represent our readers’ opinions and experiences and are not an endorsement of given practices or treatments. How could he convince this young man to choose saying, “k’chol — like all,” which makes it the world of Torah over the world of chess sound as if Klal Yisroel failed to do absolutely championship? “Look,” he finally said. “I’m not ready to everything they were instructed to? give up on you so fast. Against all odds, the venerated Rosh Yeshivah had triumphed over the worldclass champion. Several months later, David had the opportunity to ask the question that had been disturbing him ever since that fateful game. “How did the Rosh Yeshivah have the confidence to offer me such a deal?” he asked Rabbi Weinberg. “I mean, to play against the number-one player in the country, with such high stakes? And I still don’t know how it’s possible that the Rosh Yeshivah won…” “You’re right,” Rabbi Weinberg replied. “I myself don’t know how that happened… It’s been years since the last time I played chess, and when we started, I didn’t even remember which pieces could move in which direction. But I so badly wanted to save your spiritual fate that I davened for Hashem’s help! It hurt me so badly that a special neshamah like yours could turn to chess rather than Torah. So I begged Him to play the game for me. “You see,” Rabbi Weinberg continued, “my hands moved, but it was really Him playing. I couldn’t win over you, an expert player. It was Hashem Who won; not me! He heard my pain and wanted to help me save you.” * * * * *

When it comes to doing ratzon Hashem, a person must do all he can on his end, even if it seems as though he does not have the power to complete the task. Hashem will ultimately help him reach his goal. According to the Alshich, when Klal Yisroel set out to build the Mishkan, they were not perfectly familiar with every aspect of the process. From their part, they could not do “all” they were commanded. Still, they did whatever they could. Once they did their part, Hakadosh Baruch Hu helped them with the rest, and the Mishkan was completed. This explains why the pasuk uses the prepositional kuf in “k’chol”: to indicate that Klal Yisroel did only as much as they were able. The pasuk ends by saying, “Kein asu — so they had done.” Even though they didn’t technically carry out every last detail of the job, because they did the most they could, they were credited for the entire thing. Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.

When the Mishkan was complete, Moshe Rabbeinu bentched Klal Yisroel with the bracha of “Vehi no’am.” He uttered this tefillah twice. The first time, he asked for the Shechinah to rest on the Mishkan that was built through the hands of Klal Yisroel. The second time, he asked for the bracha to rest on all the other work that Klal Yisroel performs.

Beating the Overwhelm “I like Tisha B’Av more than Purim,” someone once told me. “There are no meals to prepare, errands to run, pretty much no physical preparation at all for Tisha B’Av. While Purim, not to mention Pesach, is non-stop running around before, during and after the yom tov. I just get so stressed out.” In my opinion, this person’s feelings are unsettling but even more unsettling, is that I suspect this individual is not the only one who feels this way. He’s just the only one to admit it. Nonetheless, many people do admit to feeling overwhelmed just thinking about an upcoming yom tov like Purim. The reason many people don’t end up enjoying their yom tov is because they often feel overwhelmed when even contemplating preparing for it. For example, what kind of theme for our mishloach manos will we have this year, what costumes will the children wear (of course, they all have to be matching costumes), the expense of the fancy shalach manos and seuda, who should we invite, cooking and baking and finally the idea of driving around all day in the car in the traffic with 6 screaming kinderlach insisting
physically ill or experience difficulty falling asleep. They may feel so overwhelmed that they end up not taking care of anything on their must-do list . Or even when they do finish everything, they feel pressure, stress and zero sense of enjoyment of the process. Most people with addiction issues have relapses around yom tov time. They get overwhelmed and because they don’t have the means to deal with their feelings, they run away to their addiction. ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS Believe it or not, Purim and even Pesach can be enjoyable, even the preparation for them. The key, before we slide down the rabbit hole of overwhelm, is to take a step back and ask ourselves the following questions. Why is accomplishing this whole list of things to do important to me? What’s my goal for this yom tov? Likely we want to enjoy it and we want our family to enjoy it. We want it to be meaningful.
“I like Tisha B’Av more than Purim,” someone once told me. we go to “my” rebbe first, not to “his” rebbe first, is enough to drive anyone mad. When someone feels overwhelmed, they often have trouble focusing and concentrating. They may start to feel
Then we go to the next step. If my attempt to accomplish my entire to-do list will leave me feeling miserable, then clearly, I won’t be enjoying myself and likely neither will my family. Certainly, yom tov won’t feel meaningful. So, why then am I doing it? All of a sudden, it becomes obvi-

It’s important that we have this conversation with ourselves so we can clarify what we want to do and why we want to do it (in order to have a pleasurable and meaningful yom tov, for example). If the answers don’t add up, then we need to reevaluate. This applies to all areas of life, not just yom tov. For example, Yoel, a yeshiva bochur came to me describing burnout from his learning. He was a bright student but every day, after his rosh yeshiva’s deep shiur, he’d be so overwhelmed that instead of chazering, he’d end up napping. Together we worked on breaking down his chazering process so he wouldn’t get overwhelmed. I explained that instead of thinking, ‘Oh no, I have to chazer the whole shiur at once’, he focus on chazering one small part of the shiur at a time. I en-

Similarly, Moishe came into my office complaining about business troubles. He had many plans to improve sales but for some reason he hadn’t followed up on any of them. It turned out he felt so paralyzed just by the thought of what needed to be done that he was giving up before even starting. Moishe needs to step back and re-evaluate. Once he realizes his goal is to make money so he can provide for himself and his family so they can lead a happy and successful life, he will recognize that making himself miserable in the process defeats his end goal.

couraged Yoel to make a realistic decision before he chazered as to how much time he would spend doing it. Maybe it would be just 10 minutes, maybe 20. Some people need to take their lives half an hour at a time or less and that’s okay.

As the only major yom tov that comes and goes in a day, Purim leaves remarkably long-lasting childhood memories. The parties, the costumes, the visits to grandparents, the inebriated uncle, and the festive dancing all make for a lifetime of memories that are looked back upon with fondness and nostalgia. But for children who collected tzedakah in their younger years, there’s something special to recall in that feeling of success that comes with doing something that matters in the real world and being a grown-up interacting with adults for one joyous day. In addition to the actual mitzvah gained and the impact that their tzedakah makes, children are also properly instilled with values of chesed and volunteerism in helping those in need. In recent years, The Purim Project has enlisted the help of thousands of children across the country and beyond to raise money for tzedakah on and around the big day. This nonprofit movement has been growing, and each year sees additional children and their enthusiastic parents making this project a central component of their Purim experience. The funds raised by The Purim Project go to support the efforts of the Zichron Shlomo Refuah Fund. The organization, among the oldest and most wellknown of the major chesed groups in our area, has been serving the needs of patients and their families for over three decades. From medical-related expenses to everyday living support, the organization’s services come with a heavy price tag, and this project allows children to have a part in this crucial chesed mission.
A PROJ ECT LI K E NO OTHER Fifteen years ago, a young Menachem Friedman had an idea. His mother had long been involved in Zichron Shlomo, and he had a frontrow seat to the impact they made on the lives of patients and families. “What
if we can get children to fundraise for fellow children who are battling cancer and aid them on the road to recovery?” the young chasan thought. Being a man of action, Mr. Friedman soon launched the very first project of its kind and began recruiting children who wished to be part of this tzedakah endeavor, offering them a prize of their choosing based on the amount of money they raise during the Purim season. Over time, what was soon named The Purim Project grew in size and impact, eventually becoming the household name it is today. Each year, Mr. Friedman and a small team of volunteers distribute a brochure with a number of prizes that children are able to choose from based on the amount of money raised. These range from musical instruments and new bicycles for those raising greater numbers, and everyday gadgets for those with lower goals. These incentives have captured the imagination of children who would otherwise be unable to get their hands on their dream possessions, encouraging them to get involved.
E V ERYON E W I NS We spoke with one of the project organizers who shared how children from all socioeconomic backgrounds have joined in this undertaking with the backing of their parents. Some who hail from families with fewer means appreciated the rare opportunity to acquire something that’s out of their family’s budget, while others from more wealthy homes were encouraged by their parents to learn the value of working hard and earning a reward. The stories of the children involved range from the amusing to the heartwarming. There was a young bar mitzvah bachur who joined the project so he could acquire a silver becher, which he failed to receive at his bar mitzvah. There is even a special needs child who is part of this project because he wants to help fellow children who are sick. Each child is a story for itself: one of courage, determination and chesed. “The growing pressures from running such a campaign have made us want to give up many times, but the comments and feedback forced us to forge ahead and conMarch 2, 2022

tinue,” says Mr. Friedman. “Last year we received a letter from a mother who wrote that she was writing with tears in her eyes. She wrote that her son became a different child through the self-confidence he gained by collecting for The Purim Project, and opened up in many areas, including socially and academically.” And on the other receiving end, the funds make a meaningful difference in Zichron Shlomo’s budget, enabling them to continue serving countless families in crisis. The grassroots effort is particularly meaningful to an organization whose services are geared to help alleviate the oft-hidden impact that medical crises have on families. On Purim day, while pediatric patients are holed up at home or in the hospital, they know that their peers are out there looking out for them in time of need.
I T ’ S T Z EDA K A H T I M E The collected funds make their way to The Purim Project from Purim to Purim. All throughout the year, envelopes arrive in the mail and money is dropped off at designated locations. When we spoke with event organizers just weeks before Purim, they were still receiving donations from last year from locations all around the country. The project has garnered the endorsements of rabbanim and educators who are familiar with the tremendous chesed it brings about and appreciate the values it instills in children and teenagers. Parents, too, have shared that this experience has helped their kids better relate to the plight of the needy and has shown them that every act of chesed counts.
Mr. Friedman recently met a yungerman who is involved in askanus for a yeshivah and related that his first experience with askanus was actually about ten years ago when he was a bachur and went to collect for The Purim Project! He is involved in askanus today, he said, because of The Purim Project experience he had a bachur! Some have asked why children are offered such exciting prizes when perhaps more modest ones would suffice, but the proliferation of competing projects and incentives have forced The Purim Project to keep pace. To ensure that parents are fully on board, each submission must come accompanied by signed parental approval. With Purim close, The Purim Project is once again promoting this movement and inviting the entire community to get involved. Every child has some time on Purim to do something special, and this is their opportunity to get involved and get rewarded. The organizers acknowledge that the first priority for each boy should be to collect for their own yeshivah, and only after should they collect for The Purim Project. In the earlier years, some yeshivos complained that this would take away from their fundraising, but as it turned out, over time, the project has actually helped them create their very own programs that benefited them financially. After all, we are all here for one goal: to help Klal Yisroel.. Chazal teach us that tzedakah saves us from illness and grief. In the case of The Purim Project, the tzedakah literally helps save families in these predicaments, and protects the givers and collectors via the promises made to those involved in this great mitzvah.

DIRECTIONS AND ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS ON THE FOLLOWING PAGE.
NOTES Chocolate bomb molds are available at most housewares stores. These recipes call for baking chocolate since dairy chocolate doesn’t hold its form well and melts really fast. Each recipe makes approximately 6 bombs.
DIRECTIONS 1. Clean molds thoroughly so that they are nice and shiny. Any residue will cause a blemish on the chocolate. 2. Melt the baking chocolate. 3. With a spoon, paint a thin layer of chocolate inside each mold. When the mold is fully covered, including the edges, tap the mold a couple of times to release any air bubbles. 4. Pour the excess chocolate out of the mold and back into the bowl. Then place the mold in the freezer for 5 minutes or until it hardens. 5. Apply a second coat of chocolate, paying special attention to the edges to build them up a bit. Return the mold to the freezer for an additional 5 minutes. 6. After 5 minutes your chocolate will slip easily from the mold, ready to be assembled!
ASSEMBLING THE CHOCOLATE BOMBS 1. Heat a ceramic plate or hotplate. 2. Place the bomb halves with their open sides down on the plate to slightly melt the excess chocolate off the rims of the bombs. 3. Fill half the bombs, holding them carefully to leave as few fingerprints as possible. 4. Once filled, melt the edges of the half that’s not filed. Then quickly cover the half-bomb that is filled. 5. There, now you have a perfect chocolate bomb! Continue to decorate your bombs with drizzles and baking decorations.

POPCORN IS NO LONGER THE HUMBLE NEVER-FAIL SNACK OF YESTERDAY; TODAY IT RANKS AS A HIGHCLASS DESSERT. THERE’S A REASON ARTISANAL POPCORN GRACES WELL-APPOINTED SIMCHA TABLES, EDIBLE GIF TS, AND OF COURSE, PURIM PACKAGES. HERE WE PRESENT A VARIET Y OF IRRESISTIBLE FLAVORS AND VERSATILE PRESENTATION IDEAS FOR THE VARIOUS PEOPLE YOU’D LIKE TO INCLUDE IN YOUR PURIM GIVING.
SUIT YOURSELF The advantage of these recipes is that you can always adjust the flavors to suit your taste. You can’t go wrong when tweaking them; you’ll just end up with different versions of delicious. You can also make the end result sweeter or less so by adjusting the amount of popcorn used.
KNOW YOUR KERNELS The typical popcorn — the type we generally consume and pop at home — is butterfly popcorn. While these recipes can be made using butterfly popcorn, the artisanal popcorn secret is to use mushroom popcorn, which, as its name implies, has a larger and rougher surface area that makes it sturdy enough to be stirred and hold up the variety of flavors and toppings. (Mushroom popcorn is available at Oh! Nuts.) Another great popcorn that works well, which can often be found in local stores, is Pop Secret Jumbo Popcorn.

The workers union has therefore extended the strike for another month, until the beginning of April, exacerbating the current paper crisis and affecting our standard high-quality glossy pages. In light of the ongoing situation, we have no choice but to print a section of our magazine on newsprint for the time being. Over the next few weeks, you may also see some changes in the layout order of our content, which we will implement to optimize the experience for our advertisers and readers. Please be advised that we’re doing everything we can to procure our usual high-quality paper. This is, b’ezras Hashem, a temporary issue that will be resolved shortly. Russian Invasion Prompts Evacuations From Uman, Kyiv and Odessa Within hours of the Russian invasion last Wednesday night, members of Ukrainian Jewish communities packed up and left, heading for safer territory as the military action unfolded. Given its proximity to multiple Ukrainian weapons depots, Uman’s Jewish community had prepared for the possibility of their hometown becoming a likely target, hiring more than two dozen tour buses and drivers to transport its approximately 200 families to safety. But Hatzalah Ukraine CEO Shlomo Rosilio told The Jewish Press that the community found itself in dire straits as the bombings began within hours of the invasion, with the drivers who had been paid in advance for their services all fearing for their safety and refusing to come to Uman. Four people were killed in Uman late last week, prompting Ukrainian authorities to order the city’s evacuation, reported Yeshiva World News. Alternate arrangements were made to rescue Uman’s Jewish residents, who traveled over 160 miles southwest to Kishinev, the capital city of Moldova. The experience was terrifying, admitted one of those evacuated. “We woke up at 6 a.m. to deafening explosions,” said the man. “We looked out the window and saw the whole city burning. It reminded us of videos of Lebanon. Everything was burning.” Evacuees said that they saw hundreds of cars waiting in line at gas stations and ATM machines as they left Uman and headed for Kishinev, the entire trip punctuated by the sound of explosions. The group spent Shabbos at the Jewish community center in Kishinev where they were hosted by Chabad shluchim. Hundreds of members of Kyiv’s Karlin-Stolin community 130 miles to the north of Uman also left Ukraine, setting off on a circuitous trip to Belarus that actually began a week earlier on Wednesday, February 16, when it became clear that the ongoing unrest was rising to dangerous levels. The group made the four-and-a-half-hour-long journey to Medzhybizh, spending Shabbos in the city of the Baal Shem Tov, reported Boro Park 24, but it took days to find a safe haven for them outside of Ukraine. While the decision was made to travel north to the city of Pinsk in Belarus, home to several Karlin-Stolin institutions, finding a bus driver was a difficult endeavor. After consultation with rabbanim, arrangements were finally made to make the lengthy trip to 246

Belarus on Friday afternoon, even with Shabbos fast approaching. The trip was not without difficulties. At approximately 3 a.m. on Shabbos morning, the bus found itself on a road 50 kilometers from the border that was completely blocked off. While Ukrainian soldiers were willing to accept bribes to allow them to pass, there were reports of gunfire up ahead. Instead, askanim guided the bus using Google Maps along dirt roads that took them to Mazyr, Belarus, where Reb Moshe Fhima of Pinsk spent Shabbos arranging for their safe passage along the 160-mile route to Pinsk. A similar story was reported with four busloads of families fleeing Odessa. They spent two days on buses before finding refuge in the western portion of Ukraine at 4 p.m. on Shabbos afternoon. Footage circulating worldwide showed Rabbi Rafi Kruskal of Odessa making Friday night Kiddush standing amid hundreds of refugees next to their buses, with the group eating a small amount of challah before resuming their journey. The lengthy trek was fraught with tension and the growing worry that Ukrainian troops would enforce the ban that forbade men ages eighteen to sixty to leave the country. “We were tense the whole way, and we were afraid we would be stopped,” said Rabbi Aharon Motoz, head of Dirshu in Ukraine. “Ukrainian soldiers were everywhere with their weapons drawn.” But people remained in other parts of Ukraine, with some taking shelter in shuls. Footage released on Sunday morning showed men and boys singing and dancing after Shacharis in an Odessa shul. Rabbi Avraham Wolf, chief rabbi of Odessa, said that many of the people in his community couldn’t leave because they did not have passports, including more than 100

It is a literal breath of fresh air for children throughout the Empire State as Governor Kathy Hochul finally lifted the indoor mask mandate that had them, at least officially, required to keep their faces covered in schools. Hochul broke the news at a rare weekend press conference, reported NBC New York. She cited a 98% drop in COVID-19 cases since early January when omicron peaked, as well as lower hospitalization rates and rising vaccination rates. While New York will no longer be requiring kids to mask up, parents still have the option of keeping their kids masked in school if that is their preference. The governor also said that counties and cities still have the option to require face coverings in schools. “There are some counties in the state that have a higher rate of transmission,” said Hochul. “We will allow them the flexibility to determine what’s best for their county. We encourage them to take a look at this and follow the CDC, but this will no longer be a mandate.” The CDC led the way last week on easing up on masking by saying that most Americans no longer needed to cover their faces indoors with the exception of those who are at risk of severe disease or who live in areas where the health system was being strained by COVID-19.

Citing several possible incidents of bank fraud, the Town of Ramapo Police Department is warning area residents to be on the lookout when using automatic teller machines at their local bank branches. Thieves have been known to use several types of inconspicuous devices installed on ATMs to gain access to customer accounts. One, known as a skimmer, was reportedly found on an M&T Bank ATM located in the Wesley Kosher shopping center, with an M&T customer saying that $800 had been removed from their account three days after they used the ATM. Police are advising area residents to be on the lookout for skimmers, which are placed directly atop the ATM card reader to record customer card information for later use by thieves. While skimmers look very much like legitimate card readers, they often curve outward, while actual card readers curve inward. Other ATM fraud cases involve hidden cameras and keyboard overlays that capture customer data and record their keystrokes. Those who bank locally by ATM should monitor their accounts for any unauthorized activity, which should be reported directly to police and to their local bank branch.

CHAPTER SEVENTY-ONE RECAP: Yigal
Erenbaum tells Rabbi Reiness how much they’re enjoying the “new” Osher, and he thanks him for all his work. Rabbi Reiness suggests his shidduch idea for Ariella to Mr. Erenbaum, who reveals that his father-in-law’s father was Zelig Shikovitzer. Rabbi Reiness realizes that although he may have lost Mr. Shikovitzer’s land for him, he has done another tremendous thing for him — by helping out his great-greatgrandson, Osher.
“A
re you going to Bnei Brak today?” Shulamis asked, staring piercingly at Ariella. “Yes.” Ariella smiled and stuck a bottle of water into the tote bag that had accompanied her on so many trips these past few months. “Are you also taking your suitcase?” fouryear-old Daniel wanted to know. “Oh, no. My suitcase is staying here.” “For now,” Shulamis said in a significant tone. Ariella looked at her questioningly. “I heard Mommy talking on the phone with Aunt Sarah on Motzei Shabbos about a shidduch for you that doesn’t seem to be working out, and she said you’re not so disappointed.” “You have the ears of a fox!” Gadi berated his sister. “You be quiet with your foxes!” his older sister Bracha berated him in return. “Your foxes?” Ariella looked at him. “Oh, nothing.” The boy blushed. “I don’t have any foxes now, Ariella — honest! Besides, that one didn’t even have rabies in the end, remember?” “But foxes are still dangerous,” she said to him. “What’s going on? Are you raising them?” “No, he’s not raising any foxes,” Bracha interjected. “He just talks about them a lot.” “He wants to make their tails into a shtreimel for his rebbi,” Shulamis said with a laugh. “That’s

why he wants to raise them till they get old and die, but by then, he’ll probably also be old.” “You really do have ears like a fox!” Gadi looked at his sister with flashing eyes. “But don’t worry, Ariella, it’s only a dream.” Then he added in a whisper, “For now.” Ariella was still laughing when she left the house, leaving the children under the care of the two older girls. Their father would be home in an hour, and they could manage alone until then. She also laughed when she answered Zahava’s call while waiting for Miriam, the neighbor who’d be taking her along to Tzefas. “Ariella, you’re coming in today, right?” “Why wouldn’t I?” “I don’t know. What’s with that other shidduch, the one your brother’s rebbi suggested for you? I hope they didn’t wake up about it now.” “I still didn’t hear anything definite from the other side,” Ariella said lightly. “But I know they’re hesitant about the idea, and honestly, I won’t be surprised if they turn it down. Who wants a kesubah that’s half the regular value?” “It would actually be worthwhile, I think!” Zahava laughed. “To get half price for someone who is worth double the standard? But I don’t know…a shidduch between a bachur and a widow?” “If Rabbi Reiness suggested it, then I’m sure the idea could work,” Ariella said, a bit defensively. “Rabbi Reiness is a
very smart person.” “I’m sure he is, but so am I, and with all due respect to this rav, what I’m suggesting for you makes much more sense, doesn’t it?” “Okay, okay!” Ariella grinned as she waved to Miriam, who had just pulled up. “That’s why I made up with the Reinesses that I wouldn’t wait to hear back from the Kreismans, and I would let myself look into other things. And that’s exactly why I’m going to Bnei Brak now.”
fact that she’s been married before... Did you speak to her parents? They must be disappointed.” Sarah stuck her calendar into the drawer and put on her shoes. “I’m not sure. I think they’re realistic enough to realize that the fact that their daughter finally decided to start shidduchim again doesn’t mean that the first suggestion that comes their way will be the right one for her. But in any case, we had already made up with her that she wouldn’t be sitting and waiting for him.” “Of course.” “So she told me four days ago that she’s looking into something else, something a good friend of hers has been nudging her about for half a year.” She held herself back from telling him about Ariella’s trip to Bnei Brak on Sunday, and then again last night. “Very good. I hope it goes well. The main thing is that she should find the right one for her,” he said. But something about his mood was a little defeated, pessimistic. Maybe it was Ephraim’s negative answer, after nearly two and a half weeks of hesitations and deliberations. Perhaps it was the lawyer who had called to say that the Al-Alamis had responded to the court summons, and had asked for a fax number. “It doesn’t sound very good,” the lawyer had said in an ominous tone. “But before I advise you to come for a final meeting to close the file, let’s wait and see. You don’t withdraw a claim without knowing what they want to send us, right?”
Although he’d come to terms with the loss, the trouncing of this last-ditch hope was painful.

“You’ll make sure to be here by eightthirty, right? Don’t be late.” Ariella got into the car. She didn’t want to continue this conversation in the presence of the Bergs’ neighbor, but she couldn’t hold herself back from saying, “And even if I am a few minutes late, it’s no big deal. Let him have an idea of what he’s getting into.” “He knows,” Zahava said. “Believe me, he knows. And it’s all fine. More than fine.” * * * * *
“Well, it was foolish on my part to think that I’d suddenly become a successful shadchan, huh?” Rabbi Reiness tried to sound jovial. “But I guess I can hear if Ephraim is uncomfortable with the idea. I mean, there’s no way to get around the

“What’s decreed is decreed,” Reb Elazar had responded. Still, although he’d come to terms with the loss, the trouncing of this last-ditch hope was painful. The minute Sarah left the house, the fax machine let out a long beep, and two papers slid onto the tray with a whoosh. Elazar picked them up and took a deep breath. It was good that Sarah had left. He needed to digest this final disappointment himself, alone. And to think about Osher, who was sitting downstairs and writing a new mezuzah for the shiur room, with unbelievable concentration. He had also promised to make a matching wooden mezuzah case, and his eyes had sparkled when he’d talked about it. Elazar couldn’t hold back a deep sigh as he fingered the first page. The top featured the letterhead of the wellknown lawyer’s office in Acco. Maybe once this was all over he’d go to Mr. Shikovitzer’s kever on Har Hamenuchos. He would go to the headstone and say, “I’m sorry, Reb Yitzchak. I failed to get back your lot for the purpose you’d planned it for, though I made every effort to do so. I did a lot for your great-great-grandson, though, and I tried to help his sister as well. I hope that things are good for you in the World of Truth, as you merit nachas from them, even if we — you, my father and I — did not merit to build the shul, the mikdash me’at…” His cell phone rang. It was the lawyer. “Reiness? Did you see it?” “I just picked it up. Let me read what they sent, and I’ll call you back.” The first page was a long letter in polished Hebrew. The writer was the Arab lawyer stating the position of the Al-Alami family. On the bottom of the page it said: Attached is Appendix 1, a confirmation that was signed that any possible offspring stipulated in the contract were not present at the site. Any possible offspring? Appendix? Elazar picked up the second page, a photocopy that had blurred a bit in the fax transmission. It showed lines and handwritten text, words in a scribbly handwriting, conveying stormy emotions and a lack of self-confidence. I hereby affirm that in the absence of Elazar Reiness or his descendants… it was not possible to meet with him. And then came the date, time, ID number and signature. Osher Eren262

The meeting could have taken place, in the spot that had been arranged, between the sides that had been arranged, and this appendix proved that fact! What would the Al-Alamis say if indeed it turned out that their document worked against them? A light summer breeze blew near the shore, and the waves crashed down in a hail of fizzy foam — exactly as they had done seventy years earlier, and as they had done for five thousand years before that. And Reb Elazar passed a hand over his forehead and read the black lines again. He folded the paper twice and placed it carefully in the drawer. Then, with a soft but triumphant smile on his face, he picked up the phone to call the lawyer. * * * * *
Ariella folded laundry in Bassi’s children’s room, her thoughts wandering in all directions. Every garment, every item, was a reminder of the sea of chaos that she had navigated so ably these past few months. External chaos, internal chaos… at the end of the day, it was all the same. She stopped every so often, gazing at the cute scribbles on the wall with a dreamy, pre-farewell expression.

Chaim Braun put the last car into the box. “Tatty!” he called, standing up. He went to look around the house. “Tatty?” Soon he found his father deep asleep on the couch in the dining room. “Tatty,” Chaim said, tugging at his father’s sleeve. “Tatty, wake up! You need to go to kollel and bring me to Bubby already!” “Shhh…” his father said in his sleep. “And your shirt is dirty,” Chaim said, shaking his head sadly so that his ponytail swung from side to side. “It’s because we don’t have a mommy to clean it, right?” Suddenly his father was fully awake. “Where is it dirty?” he asked. “Here,” Chaim said. “And here and here. This is ketchup from the mashed potatoes that we ate by Bubby. It squirted onto you.” “So what should I do?” his father asked, with a spark of mirth in his eyes. “You need to find a new mommy,” the boy declared. “A new mommy to clean our clothes. Bubby knows of a new mommy for us, you know? I heard her tell Aunt Rivka on the phone, and she also spoke to Morah Zahava about it lots of times. So ask Bubby where she is.” His father stood up and went to the kitchen, trying to contain his laughter. “You’re not even three, sweetheart, you know? And already you want to be a shadchan?” “So when are you going to bring us a mommy that knows how to clean ketchup from shirts?” “Is that what mommies do?” his fa-
ther asked. “Well, they do other stuff too,” the boy said. “Like what?” “They tell stories at night, like Bubby does.” “And what else?” “They cook food.” “And what else?” “Take the yingele to the doctor if his tummy hurts. That’s what Dovid told me in playgroup, and the doctor gave him a sticker because he was so brave.” “And what else?” “They tell the tatty secrets in the kitchen.” “Who told you this?” The ketchup stains were not coming off, so Mordechai Braun decided to change his shirt. He didn’t have an ironed one, but at least this new shirt was clean. It would have to do. * * * * *
And Osher sat in the old carpentry shop, a serious expression on his face, as he dipped the quill into ink and bent over the parchment in concentration. He carefully wrote out the word “b’she’arecha.” A black drop dripped onto the parchment in the middle of the ayin he had just written. He pressed his lips together for a long moment, and then, with a sigh, he took a new piece of parchment. So what if it had gotten ruined? Maybe now he’d manage something even better. THE END

It happened during a very hot summer many years ago. As the sun bore down on vast fields of corn, farmers were startled to sight puffed kernels of white, popping off the stalks. And thus, the first airpopped popcorn came to be. Whether there is a kernel of truth to this legend or if it is a good old Purim joke has yet to be determined. Chances are it’s a myth as only dried kernels can pop! In any case, it makes a nice introduction to the world of salty white puffs of fluff. Let’s take a peek at some popcorn facts.
POPCORN FACT 1: ONE PERSON EARNED $230,000 IN POPCORN MONEY DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION. People were losing their jobs, their homes and their sanity. Yet against this dismal background of hardship and hunger during the Great Depression, a widow in Kansas City netted the equivalent of $230,000 in a single year! Julia Braden was one of the earliest popcorn vendors who sold quarts and quarts of popped corn outside entertainment venues. At the same time, an Oklahoma banker bought a popcorn machine when his bank went under, and soon his popcorn profit earned him enough money to buy back three of the farms his family had previously lost! Because even though U.S. citizens barely had the means to make ends meet, they found the five or ten cents for what they considered an “affordable luxury”: popcorn! Selling this salty, buttered treat en masse was made possible years before, with the debut of Charles Cretors’ commercial popcorn machine. The first version had a gas burner and was mobile, making it easy to prepare for people on the go. Popcorn vendors would wheel their famous popcorn pushcarts through the streets, tempting the crowds with the aroma. Thus, popcorn grew to be a hot item, available in general stores and at concession stands, circuses and carnivals. Eventually, when sugar was seriously rationed during World War II, popcorn once again made it to the fore, popping into a most popular American snack.

POPCORN FACT 2: POPPED CORN WAS ONCE USED AS JEWELRY. A deeper look at the history of this all-time favorite snack reveals it was enjoyed long before the 1900s. In fact, traces of popped corn were followed to Central and South America. The Aztecs had figured out how to pop corn kernels; some even say they held dry heads of corn on sticks above open fires and let the kernels pop right off the cob! And besides eating them, the Aztecs also used the popped corn for decorating clothes and necklaces. The Iroquois Indians over in the Great Lakes region heated sand and used popped kernels to prepare popcorn soup. When the early English colonists settled in North America, they were introduced to this treat by the Native Americans, who brought large deerskin sacks of popped corn as a gesture of goodwill during negotiation meetings. Soon Colonial housewives learned to pop the seeds and serve them with sugar and cream for breakfast. Perhaps this was the first version of puffed breakfast cereal… Popcorn was by and large a homegrown crop until the 1880s, when commercial popping machines helped the fluffy snack heat up with a pop.

POPCORN FACT 3: YOU EAT SOME 42 QUARTS OF POPPED CORN EVERY YEAR. Popcorn is serious business. In an Act of Congress at the request of the popcorn processing industry, the Popcorn Board, an official nonprofit organization, was formed in April 1998. The Board is an R&P Program (Research & Promotion Program) that is out to “raise awareness of popcorn as a versatile, whole-grain snack.” Although the Board operates under the oversight of the Agricultural Marketing Service, with its board members appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture, it does not receive government or taxpayer funding. According to the Popcorn Board, Americans enjoy some 13 billion quarts of popped corn every year. That boils down (or heats up!) to 42 quarts per person and is enough to fill the Empire State Building around 18 times!
POPCORN FACT 4: POPCORN IS JUST AS HEALTHY FOR BREAKFAST AS CORNFLAKES. NUTRITIONAL

While waiting outside for the school bus to arrive, some neighbor’s kids were munching on large bags of popcorn. “I give them popcorn for breakfast,” the mother explained. “What’s the difference if it’s cornflakes or popcorn? The corn gives them the same nutritional value!” Does it really? Popcorn is a satisfying whole grain that is very filling, calorie for calorie. (Just 15 calories of popcorn leaves you as full as 150 calories of potato chips.) Cornflakes, on the other hand, are refined carbohydrates that are digested rather quickly, leaving you hungry even before lunchtime. Popcorn is high in fiber and low in calories, making it a great food choice for weight-loss purposes. On the other hand, the cereal version of corn is fortified with vitamins and minerals not found in popcorn itself. Popcorn has unique properties, being simultaneously a seed, a grain, a vegetable and a fruit. A healthy portion size is 25 to 30 grams. Maybe it isn’t such a bad idea to serve it up for breakfast… Just make sure the kids drink a cup of milk, too!
278
POPCORN FACT 5: POPCORN SEEDS SHOULD NOT BE FROZEN.
FACT 6: POPCORN WAS THE FIRST FOOD HEATED IN A MICROWAVE.
It takes 13.5% moisture for a popcorn seed to pop. When frozen, the water inside the kernel moves to the outer edges, and may even escape. Thus, too-dry seeds taken out of the freezer won’t pop. Even in a bag of healthy, moist seeds, you’ll often find some “old maids” or “spinsters,” as the unpopped kernels at the bottom of the pot are called. There are a couple of factors that stop the pop. The popcorn seed may have had too little moisture or a damaged hull. When the outer coating isn’t healthy, the steam escapes gradually, rather than with a pop. The temperature must be right, at about 347 degrees Fahrenheit, for the seeds to turn into popcorn. Good popcorn seeds should yield no more than 2% old maids.
When American physicist and inventor Percy Spencer was experimenting with a new type of vacuum tube, he placed some popcorn seeds near it. Pop! The seeds soon exploded into fluffy white popcorn. Spencer was all of sixteen years old at the time. The microwave oven model that he designed remained forever intertwined with America’s alltime favorite snack, even though it took nearly four decades for microwave popcorn to become a household item. In the 1980s, microwaveable popcorn was introduced to consumers and became very popular very quickly. Before long, companies included a special popcorn button on their microwaves. In 2020, the microwave popcorn industry netted $848.5 million in sales in the United States. Compare that to the $2 Spencer was paid for his ingenious invention of the microwave…

FACT 7: POPCORN LUNG IS NOT CAUSED BY EATING POPCORN. How, then, did “popcorn lung” get its name?! In 2000, a physician in Jasper, Missouri, was treating eight patients with breathing problems. It turned out that all eight were former microwave-popcorn factory workers, and they had all developed a rare lung disease — aptly labeled “popcorn lung.” The workers suffered from bronchiolitis obliterans, a disease that results in scarring and inflammation to the bronchioles, with symptoms such as coughing and shortness of breath. Four of the workers had such severe cases that they were placed on the waiting list for lung transplants. Disease detectives traced the illness to harmful chemicals the workers were breathing in at the factory, mainly diacetyl, an artificial butter flavoring. (Other than popcorn, diacetyl can be found in flavored coffee, caramel, some dairy products and ecigarettes.) Many companies have removed this chemical from their microwave-popcorn ingredient list, even though small amounts are not believed to do much harm. But the nickname remains. Popcorn lung for popcorn lovers.

ou may have never wondered which committed crime was so egregious as to have a wretched member of the produce family ridiculed for generations, mentioned scornfully alongside every feeble attempt at humor or originality. And this vegetable is so delightfully colored and the joy of many a barbecue, besides! Then again, what would you call a stale joke — eggplanty?

It would’ve been such a treat to witness an exchange dating back to when the term first edged into vogue and was perhaps not yet so known.
“Come now, Becky, you’ll admit that joke was rather corny!” “Pardon? Must you speak of lunch before ’tis served?”
Joshing aside, how came corn to stale humor? Historians subscribe to two schools of thought:
The usage of corny dates back to American slang of the 1930s, in which corny meant “appealing to country folk.” Why? Just picture a jolly group of farmers fresh from the cornfields arriving in New York and cracking harvester jokes! Poor country bumpkins. Wouldn’t the snooty city elites peer down their noses and stamp their attempts at pleasantries with a brand-new pejorative?
The usage of corny dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, when seed companies in America began sending advertising catalogs to farmers. To spice things up, they’d sprinkle jokes and cartoons throughout the pages. Said jokes were uproariously unsophisticated and soon dubbed “corn catalog jokes.” That was shortened to corny, and eventually thrown onto all humor that was not up to snuff.
Both theories seem to share DNA. Whichever way you serve it up, the term corny is attributed to the growers and consumers of — among other things — the aforementioned corn.

With accounts settled as far as history’s concerned, what are the mechanics of corny humor? What earns something the title, and what does it take to graduate to the coveted funny? Corny is many things, the result of which causes many negative, festering feelings to come unleashed in a barrage of put-downs. You can stick the long-suffering “corny” onto all of the following; try some on for size: A poor joke. An overused joke. A trite joke. A joke based on wordplay. A long-winded joke. An obvious joke. And… An overly dramatic performance. A silly stencil. An old adage. Any kind of cliche. A perfect litmus test for corn? Reaction. Someone cracks a joke and you:

Corn Collab In the spirit of this piece, I polled friends and fam for their best corny jokes. Some are actually funny! Enjoy this sizzling selection: • What do you call a shoe made of banana peels? A slip-on. • How do you make a lemon drop? Just let it fall. • Why did the turkey cross the road? The chicken was on vacation. • Why was the Torah not given on the mountain of laundry? Because it’s not small. • Why do women hide the chometz Erev Pesach? So they should also have something to do. • What did the egg say to the frying pan? You crack me up. • How many eggs can you eat on an empty stomach? One; after that it’s no longer empty.
No one did the corny joke reaction with more grace than my cousin Rochel. Sitting around the table and enjoying Shabbos sheva brachos fare and friendship, my then sixyear-old sister squished in with the big girls. All bashful eyes and pink cheeks, she carefully unloaded her cache of jokes. “How do you spell rust?” “R-U-S-T.” “ARE YOU ESTIE?” While her older sisters tuned her out (at best), Rochel would have none of it. She beamed at the kid. “Ha-ha-ha!” she went. “That was so funny; please tell us another joke!” And the shy jokester did. And got the same reaction. So she said another. And on and on went the amazing vibes all around, as one pre-schooler was made to feel like a million bucks. In truth, I’d be the first to hide in the secret bandwagon endorsing cob humor. Between you, me, and the barn, how then would therapists put clients at ease and doctors maintain their bedside manner? Not to mention how much we all need comic relief, and corny jokes are rather, heh, not funny at all, but, ha-ha, listen to this one, it’s really good — and I’m not LAUGHING, just smiling at my daughter over there (ha-ha-HA!). So, kids, bring on the fun!
Cut the Corn So! There you are. You are going to be so funny, you’ll knock everyone’s socks off and thus solve the single-sock shidduch crisis in one hysterical swoop. You clear your throat. You hitch your ear-splitting grin a bit higher. Flash your dimples if you have them. Gevald! Let’s try this again. For the sake of prolonging the existence of humor in our crazy world, and in order to induce some serious mirth, do not… • …introduce your joke. The funniest jokes are meant to be served up quickly. With a generous helping of wry. Haha-HA! Rye! Get it? Get it? That was so funny! • …even think of starting a joke you don’t know inside-out. Nothing is as unfunny as your captive audience feeling frightfully bad for you as you attempt to shove relevant parts of the unraveling joke back into their tight, neat, really funny slots. • …go for long-winded jokes unless you’re an official stand-up comedian with a humor routine. Otherwise, long jokes just aren’t that funny, so fuhgeddaboudit. You don’t want to be that guy about whom Shakespeare would say: “Look, he’s winding up the watch of his wit; by and by it will strike.” • …explain your joke. Whoever gets it, gets it. If no one does, find a different joke or find a different audience. But explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog; it kills the whole thing. • …be the first to laugh at your own joke. Wait for chuckles to start before adding your own. That’s really hard, right? Your joke is that funny! I know, I know… the struggle is real. Here, let’s tell it to the mirror. When you can safely keep a straight face, venture out to share your funny loot.

CREATING A POSITIVE HOME ENVIRONMENT By: Gelly Asovski, LCSW-R, RPT-S
A happy home is that safe, nurturing place in a world that has become increasingly more complicated. Children who grow up in a happy family tend to have healthy self-esteem, less behavioral challenges, and overall improved social, emotional and physical health.
of playful, connected parenting that brings positive energy into your home. basis. It doesn’t take much to take two minutes, five minutes or ten minutes at a time when you’re with your children anyway to create such an environment. A positive home also needs good, happy energy! Here are some more ideas to start you off on the journey to positivity.
3.
1. 2.
Ask your child how their day went when they come home from school. Pay attention to your child when they tell you about their day, and make space to listen to both the good parts and the difficult parts of their day. There’s only one person in the world who’s their mother, and your support makes a world of a difference!
4.
Cook your children’s favorite supper every couple of weeks. We mommies make supper every day anyway, and this is an easy way to show your children that their food preferences matter. Your children will thank you and will take turns asking for their favorite meals. The extra-special meals can be saved for birthdays!
5.
Read a book to your children at bedtime every night. This can be special bonding time that kids look forward to on a daily basis. It will also give bedtime structure and help kids fall asleep feeling content and happy. These few minutes create memories for a lifetime! These are the basic foundations of creating a positive home on a daily

PUT ON SOME FUN MUSIC. Let go of all the stress and just enjoy a few minutes of lebedigkeit. Get your kids to dance with you and have them sing along with the music. The kitchen is a great place to dance!
BE SILLY. Yes, you have my permission to be downright silly! Life doesn’t always have to be serious. You don’t need to worry and stress all the time. Take turns making jokes with your kids and laugh away. It’s good for you, and it’s great for the kids. Encourage your children to think of ways to be funny and have fun!
3.
PLAY RHYMING GAMES while you’re doing laundry or cooking supper. Start with a sentence like, “I went to the zoo,” and have your kid say the next sentence — for example, “And I said peek-a-boo.” The playful part here is that the rhymes don’t need to make sense. It’s all about connecting with your kids and finding a way to interact with them and have some fun.
4.
ACT OUT DIFFERENT CHARACTERS in books and real life, by trying on their voices and imitating how they speak (or how your kids imagine they speak). This is so much fun! Kids are great actors and actresses and will do their best to impress you with their antics. This can take any boring afternoon to the next level.
5.
BLOW BUBBLES. In the summer you can blow bubbles outside, but don’t settle for just blowing bubbles in the summer. You can blow bubbles in the bathtub or in the kitchen sink with your kids to get through a boring winter afternoon. Take the activity up a level by visualizing something cool in the bubbles as you blow them! Happy parenting! Who’s thinking about Pesach when snow is still around? Ummm, I am! And according to my survey (i.e., cornering unsuspecting shoppers with my questions and not leaving them alone until I get the answers), lots of you balabustas are thinking about Pesach too. At the end of the day, all of us will be sitting around the gleaming table eating the long-awaited marror, pretty much at the same time. The question remains, however (no, it’s not one of the four questions, though it might qualify as the fifth): Will you sit down to the matzah with eyes actually open, or will you have to be woken from your gentle snoring in time for Shulchan Orach? The good news is that with a little planning ahead, a bit of humor, lots of dancing with the broom and Chazak’s number on speed dial, all of you can get to the Seder in a calm, relaxed frame of mind — and still be wide awake to steal the afikomen. In my (not biased at all) opinion, a home where the closets are organized from the inside out — without the doors being shoved closed with the help of your 6’2” son — is a home where calmness permeates, where the mere word “Pesach” puts a smile on your face, makes you appreciate the beautiful parts of yom tov, and has you enjoy the cleaning process, too! In the coming weeks we will be tackling each room of your humble abode. Whether you live in a mansion or in a 1-bedroom apartment — or any place that includes a warm bed and a working oven — you will gain insight into how to get your home decluttered, and not only Pesach-ready, but also orderly for the rest of the year. So, are you ready to shine up and straighten up?

Goal: Declutter, clean and organize — in that order.
1. Before you start, strip the linen and wash; remove the bedding and air out or wash; and remove your curtains and wash according to instructions as the machine becomes available. 2. Let’s start with the closet and drawers. a. Empty your closet. Everything! Otherwise tackling the closet can drag on for days. b. Next, sort! Grab two garbage bags. Throw out damaged clothing in one. Just do it. Old clothing that hasn’t been worn in a while should go in the other garbage bag to be donated. c. Finally, designate a place for everything: Clothing should be hung facing one way in the following order: long robes, dresses, blazers, shirts, bulky sweatshirts, tops that need hanging, skirts. Use your judgment, or email me for questions. Coats and rain jackets belong in your coat closet. Off-season items belong in storage. Delicate sweaters, shells and thin tops should be folded and sorted according to style, color or type. Since shoe-shopping is my weakness, it’s hard for me to preach about having too many! But everything has to have a place. However my ironclad rule is: One thing comes in, another goes out. If you have drawers, get dividers for your hosiery, snoods, etc. If you have shelves, get bins and fold their contents neatly so they should be easily accessible. Handbags belong on the top shelf. The one you use on a daily basis should be at eye level. Wipe with a damp cloth. Shake them out. All the loose change you find can be quite handy for your tzedakah pushkah. Put away the cash for an outing with your friends. Hey, not now. Finish your room first. Belts and scarves should get hangers designed specifically for these items. Do not fold belts, as they will get misshapen. Scarves can be folded, though hanging them is a better option. Hooks are also a great option for scarves. 3. Now on to the heavy work — ceiling and walls! Dust your ceilings and work your way down. Don’t forget the corners! Depending on what light fixture you have, you may want to take it down, or just wash it with a gentle cleanser. Make sure it is completely dry before you put it back.

Wall art: Never spray directly on a frame. Rather wipe down with a damp rag. Dust blinds with a damp (not wet) cloth. Wash windows and windowsills. The curtains should be out of the machine by now and ready to be hung up. 4. Furniture! Turn over the mattresses for even wear. Clean bed frame. Move beds. Clean under beds. Dust and polish the dresser, chest and nightstand, and lamps. Repeat step 2 for the contents of your furniture. 5. Floor Sweep, dust and mop floors. Spot-treat for mildly soiled carpets — try Resolve Triple Oxi Advance. If you have a garbage can in your bedroom, get rid of it! Ahhhh! Prepare a smoothie: 1 cup frozen strawberries, 1 cup vanilla yogurt, ½ cup milk and ½ cup crushed ice. Sit down and read The Monsey View. No, not this page. You’re done here!
THE LAUNDRY ROOM Whether you have a huge walk-in laundry room (every Yiddishe mama’s dream) with built-in cabinets, or just a stackable machine in your apartment, the key is to keep your clothing clean and the space clutter-free. It’s one of those rooms where “stuff” just gathers out of nowhere. Laundry is a chore, simply because when you think you’re done, you’re starting all over again. If you keep this room or closet neat and empty of clutter, doing laundry will become much less of a stress. THE LAUNDRY ROOM COLLECTS LOTS OF DUST, SO MAKE SURE YOU DRINK UP; IT’S A HARD JOB. “EMUNAH DAILY” ON CHAZAK IS PRACTICALLY GUIDING MY DAY. IT’S AN AMAZING FIVE-MINUTE CHIZUK SHMOOZE. 845-356-6665. PRESS 4.
1. The appliances You can start by running your washing machine with detergent and white vinegar. Run one full cycle on “hot” while the machine is empty. It will sanitize and clean away any soap scum. Empty the lint from your dryer. Using a damp cloth, wipe around the interior. While the machine is going, you can dust the ceiling corners and wipe down the walls. Give yourself cleanup time as long as the washing machine is working. When the cycle is done, take a break. 2. Laundry baskets and hampers Wipe plastic ones with cleanser. I love using Mr. Clean in this room. The fresh smell spurs me on! Machine-wash fabric laundry hampers. 3. Ironing board and iron Remove the cover from the board and machine wash. Wipe down the rest. Pour out any water left in the iron. Make a paste with baking soda and water, and spread it on the iron’s plate. Let sit for two minutes. Wipe with a damp cloth. Wet a Q-tip and dip it into the steam vents. Refill the iron halfway full with water. Turn the iron on its highest setting. Steam iron a clean cloth for 2 to 3 minutes. 4. Drying rack Wipe with damp cloth. (If you’re thinking of purchasing one, try the type you can mount on a wall. Or one that folds as flat as possible.) 5. The room Empty cabinets and/or shelves, and dust with a damp cloth. Use bins for everything you keep in the laundry room (detergent, dryer sheets, spot cleaner, mesh bags, lint rollers, etc.). Put all the clothes that need mending in one bin next to the sewing supplies. Try not to keep extra stuff in this room. If it doesn’t pertain to washing/ mending, find it a home elsewhere. I put up hooks everywhere! For a few dollars, you can transform your room into a neat haven.
Prep List:
Windex the windows, and wipe down sills and blinds. Clean behind the washer and dryer before doing your floors. Oh, the happy little socks you’ll find!

Laundry rooms are generally tiled. The best cleaning product I’ve tried is Bona Stone Tile and Laminate Floor Cleaner. Rest assured that Pine Sol, Mr. Clean and all the rest work well too! Quick tip: Vinegar and baking soda are your best friends when it comes to homemade cleaning products. They work on almost everything that needs cleaning. Vinegar is fantastic for tiles, baking soda mixed with water is great for grout. I hope this room was a breeze for you!

A donation means life. A beating heart, expanding lungs, pulsing veins. By donating, you present a desperate Miri with a second chance to live. It’s impossible for a patient in need of a bone marrow transplant to survive. But when a transplant is performed, patients like Miri are given a lifesaver, an opportunity to continue living. Not only is the donation a lifesaver for her, but family members and friends are reacquiring someone close to their heart. A beloved child, a sibling, a friend. “When my late husband Moti contracted cancer, we were suddenly exposed to the horrors of the illness.” shares Dr. Bracha Zisser, manager of the National Bone Marrow Registry for cancer patients on behalf of Ezer Mizion. “Moti, in desperate need of a bone marrow match, was added to an ever-growing bone marrow donor list. And as we waited and waited with no donor in sight, we realized that his life along with the lives of countless patients are hovering.” Because Dr. Zisser wanted to give patients like Miri a chance, she got straight to work.

A couple of decades ago, she formed the basis for the establishment of the registry. With awareness of the database constantly rising, today it is the largest Jewish database in the world with over one million and one hundred thousand bone marrow samples in the database. Ezer Mizion saves the lives of cancer patients by finding matching donors in the world’s largest Jewish bone marrow donor registry. Thanks to the database, 4200 lives of people who underwent bone marrow transplant were saved. And Miri, afraid and lonely, is still waiting. Days pass, glimmers of hope are detected, dreams are raised, plummeted and shattered. You would think that with tens of thousands of samples taken every year, finding a match for Miri should be simple. But finding a perfect match is rarer than winning the lottery! It’s one in a few thousand.
But all you need to do is get swabbed. Dr. Ziser explains how simple the process is. “The collection of bone marrow samples is now done in a simple way - by providing a saliva sample. “And potential donors,” Dr Zisser continues. “This is a simple procedure! It’s not painful, does not take place in an operating room but while sitting in an armchair, and lasts about 4-6. Hours. And saves lives! Literally.” When a request from the hospital to find a bone marrow donation is received, the patient’s data is entered into the computer software and a search for a donor with identical genetic data begins. More data translates into more chances for Miri. Let’s feel the pain together – Klal Yisroel and a young, desperate 8-year-old girl waiting for her match. Get swabbed.
Now, the search for a perfect match is on.
Find out if you’re Miri’s match.
People are afraid to donate. “It’s painful; it’s not for me right now,” they say.
It’s rarer than winning the lottery. But you may just be that winner.
When the craving hits for something warm but you don’t wanna bundle up to face the cold.

Walk-through mazes are found in Britain, Australia, the United States, Ireland, Italy and more. Let’s take a look at these picturesque and perplexing pathways!
What Is a Maze?
Keep It Corny!
A maze refers to TWISTED PATHS through which a person must navigate, finding the route that takes them out of the maze.
A corn maze is created by growing full-size corn stalks, through which a person has to navigate from entrance to exit. Typically, many false paths branch out of the actual path.
Mazes are an age-old concept. The first maze that is recorded in history is the EGYPTIAN LABYRINTH, which is another term for mazes.
Many corn mazes are ARTISTICALLY DESIGNED. Some eyecatching corn cuts even tell stories or portray a theme. Because corn stalks can reach as much as 10 feet of height, the full design formed by the corn can only be seen from overhead using a drone or a helicopter. Corn mazes are called MAIZE MAZES in the United Kingdom. They are very popular in farms in the east of England.
A First in the U.S. In 1993, Don Frantz and Adrian Fisher designed the first full-size corn maze in the U.S. Located in east-central Pennsylvania, it covered 3 acres and boasted 1.92 miles of pathways.
Make Your Way Out One popular myth says to keep following the right walls of a maze to find the exit. But not always! Here’s a helpful tip to navigate a corn maze: Never walk through a path of the corn maze twice. If you find yourself at a junction of paths that you have already walked through, retrace your steps to find a new path, one that will lead you to the exit.

Here’s a Record! The BIGGEST CORN MAZE in the United States is the Cool Patch Pumpkins corn maze in Dixon, California, and it’s spread over 60 acres! It’s so big that people REGULARLY CALL 911 for help getting out, even though the maze visitors receive a map with details of every twist and turn.
Cool Corn Facts • Corn is considered a vegetable in the United States; in many countries, however, corn is characterized as a grain. • Maize is the formal and internationally recognized name for corn. Can we start calling popcorn popmaize? • Native Americans taught the European settlers how to harvest and prepare corn. Legend also says that they taught the settlers to prepare popcorn, which they ate for breakfast with milk and maple syrup. Popcorn for breakfast, anyone? • An average ear of corn has 800 kernels arranged in sixteen rows, and there is actually a piece of silk (those notorious corn threads) for every kernel.
The next biggest corn maze is the Richardson Adventure Farm Corn Maze. It spreads over 28 acres of corn and is composed of four smaller mazes that each have an entrance and exit path. There are also three bridges throughout the maze that help you find your way, and if you’re truly lazy, there is also a straight path that takes you around the perimeter of the maze — and out in a matter of minutes, with no dead ends to confuse you!
• One bushel of corn can make 2.5 gallons of ethanol fuel, 33 pounds of sweetener, or 32 pounds of starch. • The corn we eat is known as “sweet corn,” which is white, yellow or bicolored. • Fresh corn on the cob loses up to 40% of its sugar content after approximately six hours of room temperature storage. After those six hours, the sugar is converted to starch. • Corn is used in many nonfood items such as plastics, fabrics, aspirin, antibiotics, glue, paint, laundry detergent, soap, ink, cosmetics and fireworks... to name just a few. • In years gone by, a farmer working by hand could harvest only 100 bushels of corn a day. Modern-day technology allows for harvesting 900 bushels of corn per hour, or 100 bushels of corn in under 7 minutes.
