for sunny days. There’s that something in the air at Camp N’eemah. It’s not that we have a private lake and canoeing to boot. And it’s not the days (and nights!) brimming with exhilarating trips and programs. It’s just the way the sun is always shining our way. It’s the pride, spirit, and anticipation radiating from our campers’ sunbaked faces.

Long COVID: post-COVID Syndrome What is Long COVID? What happens when COVID symptoms don’t go away? For most people, mild to moderate COVID symptoms of fatigue, body aches, sweating and even headaches go away after 2 weeks. However, in some people who recover from COVID, persistent health problems can wreak havoc for months. This is called Long COVID or shortly “Long-Haulers” (ie people who do not clear COVID symptoms out of their system). What are the signs of lingering COVID in your body (> 8 weeks after first infection)? According to the CDC, the most common lasting symptoms are tiredness, shortness of breath, cough, joint pain and chest pain. Other issues include mental problems such as difficulty concentrating (brain fog), depression, headaches, rapid heartbeat and even difficult sleeping.
Treatment of Long-term COVID Still feeling tired or having trouble focusing two months after your COVID infection? IV hydration or a Vitamin infusion may help you recover faster. IV Fluids drip: Hydration is essential for the immune system to function properly and help our bodies to recover from illness. IV hydration can provide your body with an efficient way to replenish, restore and detoxify. IV hydration can help reduce body aches, mental fog and general fatigue. Hydration with IV fluids is provided via intravenous drip as treatment for fluid loss in which a sterile water solution containing small amounts of salt or sugar drips directly into the patient’s bloodstream. IV Vitamin Drip: Current medical literature suggests that high doses of Vitamin C by infusion may reduce the lingering inflammation in the body after COVID infection. In addition, intravenous Vitamin C might cool down other persistent COVID related immune responses that may result in the symptoms of Long COVID. Vitamin B complex might improve neurological symptoms of Long COVID such as brain fog and difficult sleeping. (Frontiers in Immunology 11:574029) IV drip infusion with Vitamin C or Vitamin B supplements has anti-inflammatory effects and may balance the immune system response. Our state-of-the-art infusion center is staffed with experienced medical providers who can administer your IV hydration and high dose Vitamin C or B infusion in a clean, safe, and monitored environment. Helping you get back on your feet after COVID with a high standard of care is our goal. For more information or to get screened for an appointment, call The Infusion Team at Monsey Health at 845-352-6800 ext 3847

MORE GREAT PERKS
(Re: The Best of Baby Gear, Issue 336) I really enjoyed reading about different baby gear. I would like to add that the tray of the Ingenuity booster seat that you reviewed can be stored in the open slot beneath the seat. Additionally, both the back extension and the foam inserts can be removed and stored inside the seat when using it for an older child. These little perks make it more versatile when using it for several ages. Thanks for such an amazing circular! R. J.

(Re: On Handling the Overload, Inbox, Issue 336) I am a fellow misophonia sufferer, and I would like to respond to the letter signed by Chana Horowitz. Reading your letter, I assume that you do not suffer from misophonia. You suggest exposure therapy for sufferers, but I wish you’d understand that every single meal shared with other people is true exposure therapy. It’s almost impossible to sit through a meal, or otherwise sit near people who eat, without excusing ourselves for a break. The alternative is getting completely overloaded, and believe me when I say that reaching that point is not pretty! Imagine if I were to tell you that a very effective way to mitigate the need for warm winter gear is through exposure therapy: Just stand there in the cold with no coat, gloves, boots or hat, and don’t go back inside to escape the discomfort. Do this every day, and soon you will find that you no longer need a coat in the winter. It doesn’t really work that way, right? Personally, I think excusing oneself for a minute is the best way of

dealin with the situation without hurting other people’s feelings. I’d like to share a funny story. One night soon after I got married, my husband noticed during supper that I was taking care that my spoon shouldn’t touch the bowl. He asked about it, and I explained that the sound of the spoon clacking bothers me. He was so surprised and said that he never even knew a spoon made a sound against the plate. So, please, withhold your judgment, and keep in mind that the brains of non-sufferers do not even pick up what ours do. A Fellow Sufferer Who Understands
IT’S A DAILY STRUGGLE
(Re: On Handling the Overload, Inbox, Issue 336) Dear Chana Horowitz and others with this mindset, Your advice to try exposure therapy as a cure for misophonia leads me to believe that you do not suffer from this condition, nor know anyone who does. (I pray that this is the case, and not that you misunderstand a sufferer you are acquainted with.) I think of the intense frustration and deep panic I often experience as a result of this condition and wonder how you can callously suggest that I expose myself to panic-inducing sounds on a regular basis. Misophonia does not mean getting annoyed at children bickering, or anything else that is ordinarily irritating. Misophonia is a brain-based disorder that causes a fight-or-flight response to mundane and everyday sounds. Your insinuation that people who suffer from misophonia expect the world to adjust to them

is erroneous and a generalization that I (and many others, I assume) do not appreciate. I am sorry, however, if your experience with a fellow sufferer has been less than pleasant. My struggle is a daily struggle. Please be sensitive. S.
A QUALITY OF LIFE SOLUTION?
(Re: My Life With Misophonia, Issue 334) I’m writing in response to your feature on misophonia. Wow! Mrs. Wagner, I can’t even begin to explain what your well-written (I know I don’t need to write wellresearched) article did to me! Your good humor is an inspiration. I know that there are programs that provide adult occupational therapy. I’ve been wondering if it can enhance my quality of life, but so far, its price tag and the lack of information didn’t allow me to take advantage yet. I’m wondering if there’s anyone out there who tried it, and what the results were. Another Sufferer
IT’S NOT ALWAYS LOST FOREVER
(Re: Lost and Found) I seem to have a penchant for finding lost items, mainly jewelry. I’ve found many articles of monetary worth, and perhaps sentimental value as well, in the past several years. The latest, discovered just last week in the parking lot of a local grocery, was a pink girls watch. The mechanism appears to be working just fine. Although I always advertise the items I find, I’ve never had a retrieval. Neither have I seen items I’ve found on any listings of items people have lost. I’m curious: When one loses something, does he consider it forever gone? Am I the only one who, after losing an item of value, immediately searches through lost and found listings? Oh, owners of lost items, where are you? R.S. 176

Customers flocked to him, happy for some comic relief while going about their business. Shabbos arrived, Hershel was a completely different person. He felt swathed in an otherworldly sanctity that he had never felt before. People wondered what had happened to Hershel the Joker. After Shabbos, Hershel reverted back to his good old jolly self, always on the lookout for the next good joke to crack. But as Shabbos neared, the holy feeling crept back. Hershel was a new person again. And so it was, week after week. Clearly, the Rav’s blessing had a lasting effect. At some point, Hershel felt that he couldn’t handle the two disparate realities — his elevated kedushah on Shabbos and utter simplicity during the week. It was affecting his sanity! So he decided to return to Czernowitz to ask the Be’er Mayim Chaim to take his blessing back. But Rav Chaim’s reply, however, was merely, “Hershel, the bracha is yours! There is nothing better than this.” But he conceded, “It is difficult to have such unrefined weekdays and such refined Shabbosos side by side. Perhaps the solution is to soften your weekday self. Then you’ll be able to process the loftiness of Shabbos!” Hershel took the Rav’s words to heart. He remained in Czernowitz for a while, developing a close relationship with the Rav, who lifted him until he became a different person. Eventually, when the Be’er Mayim Chaim moved to Tzefas, Reb Hershel moved along with him, and both are buried there. * * * * * After reading this story, we can understand the pasuk on a deeper level. By mentioning the six days of work that precede Shabbos, our day of rest, the Torah teaches us how our weekdays should look. In order to experience the elevation of Shabbos, we must invest in our ruchnius all week long. The entire kedushah of Shabbos that we sense is dependent on the level of our six days of work. Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.
Did You Know? The building of the Mishkan is mentioned five times in the Torah: in full detail in Parshas Terumah; a general outline in Parshas Ki Sisa; in Parshas Vayakhel, where Moshe repeats the instructions to Klal Yisroel; and in Vayakhel and Pekudei, the Torah describes twice more how the keilim were completed and then brought to Moshe Rabbeinu. The repetition is meant to show Klal Yisroel how important and special the Mishkan is in Hashem’s eyes.

In a one-of-its kind undertaking, Cheder Chabad of Monsey provides fully-integrated parallel classes for bright children with dyslexia or learning disabilities
Rabbi Dovid Brawer, head of Cheder Chabad of Monsey, recalls a poignant observation that has left a mark on him until this day. He was in attendance a number of years ago when a prominent doctor addressed the faculty of a large cheder. The doctor admonished the gathered for not doing enough about substance abuse issues, and the yeshivah staff could not understand why they were being accused of something they never had to deal with in an elementary school setting. 192

“If a young adult goes on to live a wayward life,” the doctor thundered, “it means that in elementary school he did not receive the necessary tools to thrive and be a productive member of society!” Rabbi Brawer has kept these words in his mind throughout the years. He realized that an otherwise capable child who might not learn in the same way as his peers will soon turn bored in class, begin acting out, lose self-confidence, and eventually be at great risk of falling off the wagon completely. He was determined to not let it happen in his school. One day, he was approached by Mrs. Ayelet Nadav, who had been seeking a school where she could launch a pilot program that she was confident would be life-changing to these children. He was eager to get her on board, and that is when the only local program of its kind became a reality. This week, we caught up with Mrs. Nadav to hear more about her paradigm-shifting classes.
What made you realize that there’s a glaring need for such a service?
I worked for years as a Pre-1A morah in a top Monsey yeshivah, one that gave children all the therapy and educational support they needed. But over the years I began to detect a pattern. We were able to flag and detect dyslexia and learning disabilities by the time children were five or six years old. But we also knew that there were children for whom tutoring and being pulled out to the resource room would not be enough. We knew that the system would not work for them. Yet, even so, we inexplicably continued to put them through the regular system where they were destined to fail. I found it akin to deliberately giving them poison. That’s a strong expression. Why do you say that?
I went around speaking to chinuch experts about this. I asked them what percentage of teenagers who left the fold struggled with learning disabilities or otherwise couldn’t fit into the yeshivah system. The answers I heard were staggering: 80%, 85% even 90%. It couldn’t be a coincidence! What type of children are we talking about here?
Regular children, gifted children, talented children. Those who are perfectly normal in every way, besides for having some learning disabilities. These children can often grow up to be the dreamers and doers who accomplish what nobody else could. Hashem wired their brains differently, and they need to be taught differently. And yet to grow into healthy individuals, it wouldn’t help for them to have a tutor or review the material dozens of times. What was your solution?
I wanted these children to remain in mainstream schools where they belong, while learning for as long as necessary in an enrichment class catered to their unique way of mastering studies. I approached the principals of four Monsey schools to discuss the possibility of opening such an enrichment classroom for their students. All but one acknowledged the issue but were unwilling to implement it within their own school. The first one to jump on board and completely embrace the idea was Rabbi Brawer at Cheder Chabad of Monsey. He understood the need and could see the far-reaching effects this would have. What goes on in such a class, compared to a traditional classroom?
Our program has been designed using a multisensory, structured language approach based on the proven Orton-Gillingham methods. Our Windward-trained reading staff utilizes direct, systematic and individual instruction in reading and spelling that teach these subjects in a completely different manner, one that dyslexic children are able to learn from. How many children are in this program?
We started with first grade and now have classes in grades first through fourth. In each grade, Cheder Chabad has two regular parallel classes, plus this smaller-sized class of about six children. It was originally open only to children from Cheder Chabad families, but February 23, 2022

classrooms if and when they’re ready for it. What other tools do you use to help the students grow?
Our curriculum includes many enrichment activities, which allow our students to enjoy school, while also catering to their creative brains. Among them are woodworking, music, art, STEM activities and science. We aim to create a safe, fun environment where the students will actually enjoy learning. What kind of results have you seen?
I cannot even begin to tell you. It’s night and day like you wouldn’t imagine! We had a fourth grader who was stuck at first grade level due to his disabilities. Within just a couple of months, he had caught up to his own grade level. This year alone, I would say that most of our children have jumped up two grade levels in English in the course of the first half of the year. Additionally, every single child here has succeeded in learning kri’ah in under a year. Some of them have been already mainstreamed back into regular classrooms. These are life-altering developments, not just nice stories. Each child has been saved from potential disaster! How have the children themselves reacted to the changes?
we have been able to avail this option to the greater community for the upcoming school year, to the delight of many parents. What criteria is there for children to be accepted in these classes?
They must show dyslexia or language-based learning disabilities, while having average to superior intelligence. There also can’t be any behavioral or emotional problems that would interfere with the instructional programs. Can you share a little bit about whether and how the kids fit in with the rest of the students at the school?
One of the reasons I was adamant about working within a school framework is due to the fact that it makes the students feel normal in every other way. Same principal, same bus, same schedule, same Chumash, same Mishnayos, etc. The only thing that’s different is the methods the teachers use in giving over the lessons. Being in a school setting has another benefit: It allows for the children to be integrated back into regular
For our students, this is the greatest thing in the world. They used to dread going to school and hated being different, and now they’re thriving and feeling successful. One young boy told me that he used to feel so bad about himself and now, “I thank You, Hashem, for making this program for me.” A ten-year-old said: “I just hope that they open it all the way to eighth grade. I never want to go to any other school!” And the parents?
Pick up a phone and ask them. They cannot stop singing the praises of the program and reveling in the nachas of their suddenly thriving children. One mother went so far as to qualify what we did for her son as “truly pikuach nefesh.” What is your vision for the future?
Ideally, I’d like such classes to be in every single school. I created a pilot model that can be replicated. I do not want to have a separate school. I want these boys in the schools their parents would choose to send them to, the same place where their siblings learn. Together we can save lives and generations.

30-Day Building Moratorium Declared as County Takes Over Spring Valley Inspections Three months after New York State authorized a county takeover of the Spring Valley building department, Rockland has hit the ground running, instituting a 30-day moratorium on building permits so that it can devote itself to tackling a list of over 800 buildings that are overdue for mandatory safety inspections. According to CBS News, the county team comprises twenty certified code inspectors based in the former cafeteria of a county office building in Pomona. The Rockland County legislature approved $1.5 million in funding for the effort, reported The Journal News. The county team will be led by Edward Markunas, director of the Rockland County Office of Building and Codes, with a schedule created to inspect Spring Valley apartment complexes, private homes, businesses and schools to ensure that they meet building and fire codes. Markunas said that buildings with severe violations are being prioritized for inspections. Approximately 20 homes that were deemed to be among Spring Valley’s worst 100 properties were inspected last week, including a home that was closed down earlier in February. The house had no smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, and while it is listed on Zillow as a 2,660-square-foot three-bedroom dwelling, it was home to nine families. Tenants are not legally required to let inspectors into their homes, although County Attorney Thomas Humbach said that warrants will be obtained to gain access if necessary. Fines for violations could range as high as $5,000 per day, although Rockland County is insisting that the goal is compliance, not penalties, and that it looks forward to being able to return the responsibility of enforcing building and fire codes to the Village of Spring Valley in the long term.

Rabbi Nechemya Malinowitz of Eretz Hakodesh announced the long-awaited news on Sunday morning. “Starting March 1, all tourists, unvaccinated, will be able to come into Eretz Yisroel — everybody, all ages — as long as you have a PCR test before and after,” said Rabbi Malinowitz, adding, “Welcome to Eretz Yisroel!” That news came just days after El Al dropped a bombshell of its own — a test run of organized minyanim, which will be held after meals in the rear galley area. The minyanim are being launched in an effort to minimize disruptions on El Al flights between Tel Aviv and North America. Davening times will be announced before takeoff as well as on passenger screens and the loudspeaker system, reported Globes. Minyan participants will be required to wear masks, and flight crews will have the authority to send passengers back to their seats should difficult flight conditions arise. El Al is hoping that creating official minyanim will prevent crowding in aisles and other areas that can sometimes occur when passengers organize pop-up minyanim. Currently, El Al plans to schedule a 30- to 40-minute vasikin Shacharis, with special attention paid to keep the minyan in the galley so that it does not disturb passengers seated in the rear of the plane. The airline did not give any indication of the length of the minyan pilot program.
NY Health Care Workers Get ThreeMonth Extension on Booster Mandate A state mandate that would have required health care workers statewide to get their COVID-19 boosters has been pushed off for three months because of potential staffing shortages.
The Associated Press reported that New York State Health Commissioner Mary Bassett said last week that the state would not be enforcing the mandate which was set to go into effect on February 21. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the mandates in early January when omicron was surging, but low booster rates, particularly among nursing home staffers, made it an unrealistic prospect. According to The Journal News, up to a quarter of the state’s health care workforce would have been out of work had the mandate been enforced. “The reality is that not enough health care workers will be boosted by next week’s requirement in order to avoid substantial staffing issues in our already overstressed health care system,” said Bassett the previous week. The decision was welcomed by Jim Clyne, CEO of LeadingAge New York, which represents 5,600 providers serving senior citizens. “Three days were not going to be enough time to get enough boosted staff members to serve the residents and

patients we have to serve,” said Clyne. Booster rates have been rising according to Bassett, and health officials hope that they will continue trending upward during the three-month grace period that runs through mid-May. The New York State Department of Health did not say whether the booster mandate would be enforced or dropped at that time. While the announcement comes as good news for those who have yet to receive a COVID-19 booster, Hochul’s initial vaccine mandate requiring all health care workers to receive two doses of the Moderna or Pfizer shots, or one dose of Johnson & Johnson, remains in place. Despite the reprieve for unboosted health care workers and declining infection rates, Hochul extended New York’s state of emergency for one more month, keeping it in place through March 16. The governor did relax the state’s indoor masking mandate for businesses, but kept the school mask mandate in place until at least early March, citing low vaccination rates among younger children.

CHAPTER SEVENTY RECAP: Though
happy to be home, Rabbi Reiness feels deep anger toward Osher, since Shikovitzer’s lot seems to be lost forever. To combat this anger, Rabbi Reiness decides to do even more for Osher: sponsor additional safrus lessons for him. He also wants to redt a shidduch for Ariella, and he says that his forgiving Osher will depend on whether Ariella agrees to look into the suggestion. Osher has a great conversation with Ariella, and a very positive phone conversation with his parents.
“H
ow is the Rav recovering?” Yigal Erenbaum asked politely. “I understand this was quite a harrowing experience…” “The Rav? I don’t know; you need to ask him…” The lot stretched out before him, bathed in sunlight and full of trash, just like he remembered it. Elazar Reiness walked along the edge, no longer afraid to be seen, nor to be identified. His battle had come to an end, in failure, but he was biting his lips and moving onward. There would be a hearing in court, but he wasn’t pinning much hope on it. Still, every so often, his legs carried him here. “So… how do you feel?” Mr. Erenbaum reworded his question. “Baruch Hashem. The first few days were rough, but as time goes on, I’m recovering.” “We enjoyed Osher very much over Shabbos,” the boy’s father said suddenly. “You’ve made a new person out of him.” “He’s a wonderful boy,” Rabbi Reiness told Yigal sincerely. “You should have lots of nachas from him. Life here, the atmosphere, the calm, what he went through… it all helped him progress, baruch Hashem. He’s really working on himself, and it shows. He has a new chavrusa now, and they get along very well.” “He also showed us a mezuzah he is in the

middle of writing. I’m not a big maven, but it looks pretty nice, doesn’t it?” “It’s really exceptional.” Rabbi Reiness turned his back on Shikovitzer’s lot and continued walking. “The sofer who is teaching him claims he has unusual talent, that Osher is gifted in this particular skill.” “I’m glad to hear. And it’s also interesting,” Mr. Erenbaum said, “because over the years, we never noticed him being drawn to this kind of thing — things like art, or the precision needed for this particular kind of work… I also don’t think that his handwriting is particularly nice.” “Safrus is a separate art, in a class of its own. It’s not writing in the simple sense of the word; I think it’s better to describe it as drawing the letters.” “Well, I certainly don’t understand these things; I’m more of a dry numbers person. But what difference does it make? The main thing is, he should be successful at whatever he does.” “Amen v’amen,” Rabbi Reiness answered warmly. Then he lowered his voice. “On another subject, I have a shidduch suggestion for your oldest daughter. My wife spoke to her already, and she’s ready to listen, in theory, but she asked us to give you the details so you can make some inquiries for her.” “She wants us to look into it for her? Are you sure?” “Yes. Maybe it’s just as a way of getting my wife’s pressure off her… but the main thing is that she agreed.” “Did you suggest it to the other side already?” “I thought of doing it at the same time. I have the details about the boy and his family, and I’d be happy to get your information. If the suggestion sounds interesting to you, in general terms, I’ll reach out to them. Every day that passes is a shame.”
“It’s true. As it is, too many days have passed already.” “So, it’s a bachur from a non-chareidi religious family, but over the past few years, the boy became much more frum. He is now learning in the Mir, in Yerushalayim. His family also became more religious as a result of where he was going, though they are not quite as yeshivish as him. Does the background
had left his father alone to leave This World, yearning, longing, and with a void that had never been filled. Those had been difficult years, replete with so much ideological falsehood. Maybe this could be a way to favorably judge those who fell by the wayside, but that did not absolve them from responsibility, even for one minute. “And Osher is coping beautifully,” he continued. “We just spoke about it, right?” “Nu, nu.” Erenbaum seemed to regret his momentary candidness. “So, do you want to hear about our family?” “I’d be happy to.” “I’m from Tel Aviv, and I have two brothers there. My father is from a longtime Berlin family; no one in the family is frum, though. My father moved to Eretz Yisroel but knew nothing about Yiddishkeit. My mother’s side did know a bit about tradition: Shabbos candles, Yom Kippur... Their name was Blum.” “And your wife?” “Her maiden name is Schick, from Kibbutz Yodfat.” “Does she have siblings?” “No, she’s an only child.” “And what was her family like?” Osher’s father smiled wryly. “A typical kibbutznik family. Her mother came from Hungary after the war, and settled there. I think her name was Sternberg; I’ll find out. But my father-in-law, of blessed memory, was what they call ‘the salt of the earth.’ His parents were from the founders of the kibbutz. Not that that means anything to anyone today.” “Were they Hungarian?” “I think that the Schick grandmother was from Hungary, and that he was from Russia, or Ukraine. He came to Eretz Yisroel as a young boy. I’ve heard lots of his stories from his Palmach days… He belonged to one of the underground movements; I don’t remem-
“After such an accusatory evaluation, I would be surprised if the honorable Dr. Kreisman would want us as mechutanim.” Yigal did not even seem to be making an effort to couch the bitterness.

sound okay?” “Yes, that’s fine.” “I’m talking about the son of Dr. Kreisman, from Zichron Yaakov. He’s the one who evaluated Osher.” “Aha.” Rabbi Reiness paused for a moment, and when nothing more was forthcoming, he asked, “So what do you say? This bachur, by the way, is one of the most special talmidim I have ever had.” “What do I say? Only that, after such an accusatory evaluation, I would be surprised if the honorable Dr. Kreisman would want us as mechutanim.” Yigal did not even seem to be making an effort to couch the bitterness. “Well, I think they would want it,” Rabbi Reiness said calmly. “I read the evaluation, and there is no accusation there. It’s simply the picture of a situation. And as a professional who is involved with boys who have strayed from the path, I am telling you that in every case, every child has his own free will. Parents are not immune from making mistakes, but if those mistakes do not involve critical issues, the child should be able to cope, and can cope.” Zelig Shikovitzer rose in his mind. He had never met the boy, the one who

In any case, neither my wife nor I had any Torah-observant relatives from either side.” “And yet you became frum, and built a beautiful frum family, all on your own,” Rabbi Reiness noted quietly. He looked at the few lines he had written down, and distractedly poked holes with his pen in the cover of his notebook. “That’s remarkable.” Mr. Erenbaum didn’t reply. “Remind me, what was your wife’s grandfather’s name, the one from the Palmach?” “Schick. Zelig Schick.” He laughed. “My father-in-law’s father. He changed his family name when he went off the derech, but he kept his first name for some reason. My wife told me how strange it was for her, as a child, to have a grandfather with an archaic name like Zelig, and yet, he was a proud kibbutznik.” Sarah always said he had a sixth sense that helped him zero in and find the most miserable boys on the street. Elazar never knew if indeed there was such a thing, and if there was, if he had it. But the minute he heard the grandfather’s name, he felt with every fiber of his being that he knew exactly who this Zelig was. It was the Zelig he had just thought about five minutes earlier. Was this what Sarah called a “sixth sense”? “Schick,” he said, and turned around to glance back at the lost lot behind him, located on the seamline between old Acco and the new part of the city. “Shick is Shikovitzer, isn’t it?” “I don’t know. But you know what? Now that you mention it, I do remember my wife telling me something like that. You seem to have done some homework even before calling me.” Did Mr. Erenbaum sound offended? “Not at all. I just remembered a 216

Zelig that I knew. I mean,” he clarified, “that I heard about. He was a friend of my father, zichrono l’vracha, before he left religion. Wow. I am totally amazed.” He fell silent, thinking about Zelig, about Yitzchak, about his own father, and about the will. The will that he was unable to carry out. Mr. Erenbaum said something about how small the world was, and wasn’t that interesting, and that they would find out more details and get back to him. But Elazar hardly heard him. He said a few polite word, hung up, and remained standing in the middle of the block. A kaleidoscope of thoughts and memories whirled through his mind, and he inhaled deeply. Shikovitzer’s lot was no longer. It was standing abandoned and neglected; the foxes were celebrating their victory. But his great-great-grandson was alive and well, and a ben Torah; he was overcoming his challenges and making progress. And if he, Elazar, could believe his sixth sense, he was now beginning a new path, a lighter one, a better one than any other he had tried so far. You tried to get the land, and you didn’t succeed, but you helped Osher build the person inside him. You tried to illuminate one forgotten place, but the fire took hold of a different branch, and it is glowing in its own way. True, a mikdash me’at, a shul, was supposed to be built here. And it was ironic to think that Osher himself was somewhat responsible for the failure. But maybe it also was a comfort of sorts. Elazar Reiness gazed at the lot on the corner of the street, as if to say goodbye, and turned around again. He could go back to the carpentry shop, to the dozens of boys waiting for him there, and to Osher, who was learning with his chavrusa now. Perhaps he should tell the lawyer to just withdraw the appeal and forget about the whole thing. There did not seem to be anything more for him to find in Acco. The game was over. But aside from the lot, there was still the carpentry shop, the terrific air, the open sea and a head clear 218

of pressure — and that was all so good for his bachurim. So perhaps he would stay here. Or perhaps he’d move. In any case, he would continue to give his boys his heart and soul, and daven for success to the Master of all efforts and results, in Whose Hands it all rested. One needed to grow up to understand this kind of thing, but among his
There did not seem to be anything more for him to find in Acco. The game was over. students, there were lots who were matured by life, which gave them the ability to absorb significant understandings like this. Osher, for example. When all was said and done, Yitzchak Shikovitzer could definitely be pleased.
Osher He’s nice, this Avner, the new guy. I like him. Aside from Doron Nachman and him, the boys all tend to look at me with this annoyed expression, the same one they always looked at me. You know, the kind of expression that says, “Who are you anyway, little kid? You don’t understand anything.” But now, at least, I’m trying not to give them reasons to look at me like that. These days I hardly work on anything in the carpentry shop. Reb Elazar set up a small table for me on the side, and when the boys work, I sit and write. Sometimes, though, when I need a bit of a break, I’ll take the torch and a piece of wood and make whatever shapes I want. I prepared a sign like that for Doron Nachman, as a goodbye present. He’s probably leaving next week. He really liked the gift. I’d sketched the lighthouse, similar to what I’d done on the broom I’d made for Ariella, and he seemed very appreciative. Shlomo has been working for two
days now on something that looks like a chair with a special place for legs, similar to the chair Yechezkel Rosenberg has in Kiryat Chaim. I think he’s building it for me. He spends too much time hovering around me, as if he’s trying to evaluate my height with his eyes. I’m not saying anything, though, because I don’t want to ruin the surprise. It’s really nice of him. There were times when we didn’t really get along, and I think he wants to forget about those things. Maybe I’ll also make him a wooden plaque. I’d sketch a fox on it. I wanted to make a nameplate for Ariella’s front door, as a gift for her. Right now, however, Yisroel Meir Berg is still in the hospital, and she’ll have to be on the yishuv for at least three more weeks. But eventually, b’ezras Hashem, he and his parents will come home, and it’ll be time for her to leave. I thought of her, wandering around like that without a real home of her own... It must be so hard. I chose a really nice piece of wood for the sign. It looked a lot like the one I’d etched “black sheep” into that time. Ariella told me that she had found it on the beach when she came to Acco. But I didn’t know which last name to write. In the end, I made a pretty border, with a delicate pattern, and put it away. It would wait patiently. First I’d give her the broom, maybe when I visit her one day at the Bergs, on their yishuv. She invited me to come over and said that Gadi is also waiting to see me. I’m also busy writing another mezuzah. No one will buy a mezuzah from a sixteen-year-old boy, but Tatty was happy to accept my first one; he even put it up on the front door at home! He called me the other day to let me know that he’d taken it to a rav who is an expert in this area, and the rav said it’s not only kosher, but mehudar! Maybe I’ll also make them a nameplate, and the mezuzah I’m working on right now will be for Reb Elazar. I already made him a nameplate, and immediately, he took off the old metal one that had been there so he could put

mine up. I wanted to tell him that I was very flattered about that, but I didn’t find the right opportunity. I really need to learn to find opportunities to say things to people, because sometimes these things are pretty urgent. Like, I need to find the right time to apologize about the lot. I still haven’t found that opportunity, and I feel terrible about it. We actually spoke about the lot a few times, Reb Elazar and I. After he came back from the phone call with my father, and told me that our families go way back, and that the lot that he wanted to get was because of a promise that his father had made to my great-great-grandfather, that might have been a good time to apologize. But I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Tatty and Mommy were pleasantly surprised and happy when they heard that old story, but it was uncomfortable for me. I just feel, I don’t know, uneasy, whenever Reb Elazar mentions the lot, even if he talks about it in a general way. I know I should apologize to him. It makes no difference that this lot really should be more my family’s than his; he’s the one who worked so hard to get the land back, investing all that time, energy, and thought into it — until I came along and ruined it all. I already apologized, very briefly, for the kidnapping that I caused; I think I stammered my whole way through. But I can’t speak about the lot. It’s just such a loaded topic, made even more loaded by the fact that it’s still before the court hearing, and everything is so tense and looks so hopeless... I have to plan my words, especially since I’m the only one who knows that despite their hopes, they have almost no chance. I didn’t tell anyone about the form I’d signed that day for the Arab who came by; I’d basically made it official that there were no Reiness heirs around when the meeting should have occurred. I don’t know what Reb Elazar will do when he sees that document in court. I prefer not to think about it at all. To be continued… 220

In light of the paper shortage we wrote about in last week’s issue, we had no choice but to print a section of our magazine on newsprint this week. Please be advised that we’re doing everything we can to procure our standard high-quality paper, and this is a temporary issue that will, b’ezras Hashem, be resolved shortly. We are looking forward to reverting to high-quality print across the board very soon.

Puzzles serve as a great metaphor for many things in life: our place in this world, how challenges are part of a greater plan, how we relate to others, and so on. But there’s nothing that puzzling about puzzles; they are fun for children, stimulating for adults, and look beautiful adorning your living room walls. Personally, I’m not much of a puzzle person. The only time you’ll see me pick up a puzzle is when I dig pieces out from between the couch cushions after Shabbos or when they are swept out from under the oven before Pesach. But as a parent and thoughtful upsherin-gift giver, many Jewish-themed puzzle purchases have made their way onto my credit card bills over the years.
bacheinte pictures that I felt comfortable with. Even something like a beautiful benign farm puzzle would have the nonkosher animal starring in the scene. At that point, the only Yiddish-themed puzzles available were large-piece puzzles that were assembled on a board, designed for really young children. And so I was struck by the idea that perhaps I should create something to fill this need. I figured that there would be some demand for the puzzles I had in mind, which would provide a source of supplemental income and an enjoyable outlet to complement the cooking, cleaning and household chores that kept me busy. While I’ve never drawn professionally, I always enjoyed art and crafting, so this was a project that came naturally to me. Today, beautiful puzzles fill the shelves of every toy and Judaica establishment in the community, but it wasn’t always this way. Four decades ago, at a time when toy stores rarely boasted Judaic-themed toys, puzzles, or even books, one Monsey housewife decided to design puzzles geared specifically to frum children. Mrs. R.K. was kind enough to share the story that will leave the readers who remember her designs nodding along, and younger ones shaking their heads in amazement.
What led you to launch this line? As a mother of a growing young family, I was always on the lookout for puzzles for my children. But whenever I’d pick something up, I would often find myself putting it right back onto the shelf. The children’s puzzles were usually Disney and Sesame Street characters, not the type of heimish,
How did you get started? The old-fashioned way! I went out and bought a puzzle whose box showed that it had been produced in Buffalo, NY. I called the information line to get their number, and asked the proprietor who answered the phone if he’d be willing to help me bring this project to fruition. I had the siyata d’Shmaya that this very first person I contacted, a Mr. Scott who ran a one-man-operation, was willing to work with me — a strange voice over the phone, no less. He was very helpful, and he didn’t even ask for a down payment before getting started! Right there on the phone, we worked out the logistics. It was soon decided that I would draw the art on a board and mail it to him in Buffalo, and he’d handle the rest, including the color separation, box mechanics, and everything else involved in producing puzzles back in the 1980s. How many puzzles did this new business produce? My mother, a”h, thought it would be appropriate to call our endeavor the Nachas Puzzle Company, and so that’s the name we went with. A couple of thousand sets were manufactured in total. There were four designs: Three of them were my own designs — a brachos puzzle, a mishenechnas Adar puzzle, and an alef-beis puzzle that I designed with a friend. Later, the author of the Menchkins book asked me to design a puzzle depicting the adorable Menchkins characters (raise your hand if you remember them) performing mitzvos and showing good middos.
What ages were these puzzles designed for? We had two versions for each design: larger puzzle pieces for younger children, and one with smaller pieces for older children, and both finished scenes measured 14 by 19 inches. The brachos, alef-beis and Menchkin puzzles were sold in 52- and 104-piece versions, and the Adar one had 100 and 300 pieces respectively. Our priority was to manufacture the puzzles with high-quality materials both for smooth play and durability.
How did you go about selling your puzzles? We had no business infrastructure; we distributed the puzzles ourselves and also shipped them out of New York to Jewish communities across the U.S. The retail price for the puzzles was six dollars. My dear friend, J.G., availed 244

What has happened to the business since? Well, it was good while it lasted! My family was growing, and soon it was time for others to pick up what we started. When I visit a store today and see shelves and shelves of such heimish puzzles, it warms my heart. It’s beautiful to see what a variety of playthings are available for today’s children, baruch Hashem.
What lasting memories do you have of this period? It was definitely a memorable time in our lives. I remember waking up after a nightmare where I dreamed that the puzzles arrived and the dye had run all over, rendering them all useless. I’m not much of a business person, so this was a very big deal for me. Baruch Hashem, my fears were unfounded and everything went smoothly. I also remember the electrifying excitement of the children when the truck arrived and the puzzle boxes were unpacked. It was a real wow moment. A personal heartwarming experience that I won’t forget is watching from the sidelines how my kids got down on the floor to unwrap the box and do the puzzle for the first time. It was such a satisfying feeling to see the dream of kinderlach enjoying heimish toys materialize right in my own home. her garage for us as storage space, and she and her husband babysat the puzzles for us (including flood protection). Store owners were very receptive to this new item. Most customers wanted us to give them the order on credit and pay us once they sell the puzzles. But there were those exemplary people who would take out their wallets as soon as they saw us arrive with the delivery. One of these was Mr. Itzkowitz from Itzkowitz’s Toy Store on Lee Avenue in Williamsburg, the store that later became the popular Toys 4 U brand, who would never take an item before paying for it. There was also a truly fine gentleman from Boro Park whose name escapes me who insisted on only buying what he had the funds for upfront. He shared how he watched friends go into debt by banking on future funds (and others striking it rich like that), but that he wanted to go to bed at night knowing that he doesn’t owe anyone money. Customers like these were inspiring.
What was the feedback like in the community? We did very well, baruch Hashem. Besides the local sales, we also sold puzzles in Chicago, Florida, Baltimore, Toronto and more. I recall seeing an ad in the Moshiach Times (back then it was distributed freely to many homes) where a Crown Heights retailer highlighted our product. That helped me realize that I was actually making a difference. 246

It is now decades later. Do you still have any connection to that era, or is it all memories? I have one brachos puzzle in my home, and I was able to procure one alef-beis puzzle for this interview. If any reader has either of the other sets, I would love to see them again before they’re lost to history. I also want to share an incredible story that happened years later and really moved me. Mr. Scott, the man who manufactured the puzzles, was always very nice and accommodating, but also very stiff and business-like at the same time. He never spoke an extra word to me. I always got the feeling that he hailed from a nation that wasn’t very friendly to the Jewish people. One day, many years later, I received a phone call from a woman who introduced herself as Mr. Scott’s daughter. She had converted to Yiddishkeit some time earlier, she said, and was living in the Lakewood area. Now she was calling because she wanted to know if I still had any of the puzzles her father made for us! I could not believe my ears.
Do you feel like you had a part in spurring on an entire industry? I don’t want to take credit for anything. It was something that I was grateful to have a part in. Hashem runs His world, and we are all just part of the puzzle.
In this feature, the Leviim Art Gallery of Crown Heights, NY, showcases some of their unique paintings for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy the story that each one tells. What’s trending now:
Modern art, especially when it comes to traditional Jewish-themed art. People tend to gravitate toward muted color schemes and put their art in their living rooms. The most popular painting size is 20” x 30”. Framing services are not done at the gallery, but we do work with another store to bring our customers highquality frames.
Take a look at this artwork by Yoel Glick, titled Chasidic Dancers. Glick used watercolors as his medium, which are notoriously hard to work with, yet still managed to use paler colors for the people in the back, indicating their distance.
In this painting Jerusalem, also by Yoel Glick, the holy city is almost hidden by a vibrant background. The piece has elements of space and the great unknown within, but of course, Yerushalayim shines through.

There’s an odd contradiction in this painting. The sun is setting, but there are no crowds at the Kosel. We can see that night is falling in the top left corner — a closer look will reveal some tiny stars!
Check out this semi-abstract painting of a man standing at the Kosel. We know he is at the Kosel because of the linear brushstrokes that make up the background, but on the bottom half of the background there is only a deep teal shade. Why do you think the artist chose this color?

This is a lovely rainbow-colored abstract piece of the Gates of Jerusalem. The painting moves from warm red-oranges at the top to cool blue-greens at the bottom, with the wall of the Old City serving as a barrier in white. Gates of Jerusalem by Moskalev, oil on canvas
This Ari Ziegler painting is titled Sofer. The sofer is in black and white, but out of his quill flies all the colors of the rainbow. Ari has the ability to bring to life all of the magic within a Torah scroll. Sofer by Ari Ziegler, giclee art
This beautiful oil on canvas painting embodies certain Greco-Roman elements found in many classical paintings. Zaslavsky’s use of creating a frame within a frame with the columns and arches provides the painting with depth, inviting the viewer to peer closer. Y. Zaslavsky, oil on canvas
Check out this gorgeous piece by Patrick. It’s an interesting mix between abstract and realism. The colors are completely abstract, but the sizes and details of the painting are realistic. What do you think the artist is trying to tell the viewer? Kotel by Patrick, oil on board

This is a wonderfully textured piece by Lesya Bershov. This painting utilizes thick and heavy brush strokes to bring the reader to the scene. We can imagine just how the stones would feel under our fingertips. He does the same thing with the palm tree; each leaf is distinct and stands out from the rest of the painting.
Take a closer look at this intimate painting of the Kosel. As opposed to the majority of artists who show the Kosel in its entirety, Fuchs lets the viewer gaze upon several men deep in prayer at the ancient wall. It’s unusual to see so few people at the Kosel. Why do you think the population there is so sparse?
This is a fantastic rendition of Krias Yam Suf. Instead of following the traditional method of portraying the walls of the sea as composed of water, the artist chose to paint actual walls and create the effect of the Jews breaking down a barrier between them and the Holy Land.
These two men seem to be leaping in joy and happiness while on the banks of a river. The figure on the right holds a violin (or another instrument in that family), perhaps in the middle of a song.
The Leviim Jewish Art Gallery is a beautiful art gallery located in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. We offer home and office showings. We have hundreds of paintings featuring a cavalcade of Jewish art and works painted by Jewish artists. We source new inventory weekly directly from the artists, removing the middleman and bringing you fantastic art at amazing prices.

BY: GITTY KAY Art is a form of self-expression. In this article I will guide and help you express yourself on canvas, but feel free to use any supplies (literally anything — paper clips, tissue paper, rocks and more) to enhance your piece of art! The three sample art pieces here are all made with the same material and colors. This is to show that there is no limit to what can be created! To start, you can copy these designs, but the objective is to get you creating your own, original masterpiece. We’d love to see your creations!
PAINTING POINTERS SUGGESTED SUPPLIES • Canvas • Paint brush • Acrylic paints (medium- or heavy-body) • Beads • Hard paper
• When painting the background, use a generous amount of paint as it will also act as your glue. • Dot the paint in the general areas you’d like to have each color. Use the light colors next to the white, and then gradually go darker. • When painting, always start at the white or lightest color, and then blend this into the darker colors.
• Buttons
• The direction you paint in will make all the difference in the way the background looks, as you’ll see in the instructions below.
• Feathers
• Make sure to paint the sides of the canvas as you go along.
• String
TIP: You can always wipe off some paint and start over!
STRIPED BACKGROUND • Dot the paint in a horizontal stripe-like pattern.
1
• Paint across the canvas, starting with the lightest color, as shown. 2 3 • When done, you can add another, coordinating color for interest. 4
1
5
CIRCULAR BACKGROUND • Dot the paint in a circular shape. Use the lightest color at the center of your circle.
6
• You can start the center of your circle at any spot on your canvas. Then add the other colors around it. • Paint using a circular motion.
7
CHECKERBOARD BACKGROUND This method may take some practice to get right.
• Dot the colors of your choice randomly across the canvas.
8
2
• Use the brush to paint messy plus signs (+) that overlap one another. 9 10
ADDING THE TEXTURE You can either plan exactly how you want your canvas to look before you start, or just randomly decorate it as you go along. There’s no right or wrong way to do this. TIP: You can always remove anything you don’t like and start over! When placing string on your wet paint, be extra careful not to drag the paint with the string — but it’s okay if it does happen; you can always add some cover-ups like beads or a bit of paint. After positioning the string, press it down using the tip of a pencil or the end of a paintbrush. 11 12 Use hard paper to cut out designs and shapes you’d like to use. Fold these to create dimension, as with the hearts and butterfly (on the circular-shaded painting) pictured. 13 14 Beads can be placed one at a time if you want them in specific spots, or you can sprinkle them from a bit of a distance and let them free-fall. 15 If they are free-falling, make sure to press each one down so that it sticks well.
Enjoy! There really is no way you can go wrong with art, especially freeform art like this!

EMOTIONAL BOUNDARIES DEFINED Most parents understand the importance of teaching children the concept of physical boundaries. If a stranger offers the child a candy and tells them to come with them, we’ve all been taught never to say yes and absolutely, never to go with them. Even if the stranger looks like a regular frum yid, most of us have been taught as children - ‘Stay away and run back and tell Mommy’. But what happens if someone says something hurtful to us, especially someone we know and trust? How many people have been taught about emotional boundaries, the art of separating your feelings from other peoples’ feelings? How many of us have been taught to discern what to take in emotionally (of what was said) and what to leave out? For those gifted with a happy and functional childhood, healthy emotional boundaries come naturally. These individuals intuitively understand the concept of self, where their “I” begins and where their “I” ends. They intuitively know not to take responsibility for another person’s feelings or opinions. They understand that what they think or feel does not depend on other people’s thoughts, feelings or moods and vice versa. They know that just because Yankel said something Motty did was wrong doesn’t mean it’s true. All it means is that Yankel thinks it’s true.
no matter how absurd or objectively untrue the other’s opinions are. For example, Sender grew up in a home where his parents’ wishes, feelings and desires were forcibly imposed on him. It didn’t matter whether he wanted to do something or not, if his father wanted it, then he wanted it (at least that’s what he was told over and over). Eventually, the idea that he had no legitimate thoughts and feelings of his own became deeply ingrained in him. So, when one of his adult sons years later told him that he never made time to learn with him, even though Sender knew it wasn’t true, he found himself doubting his own internal truths and taking on his son’s feelings that perhaps it was true that he never learned with him..
They intuitively know not to take responsibility for another person’s feelings or opinions.
But for those who were put down and invalidated as children, who were told what they were and were not allowed to feel never learned proper emotional boundaries. Consequently, as adults, they will internalize as truth anything someone outside of them says to them or thinks of them,
Someone with healthy emotional boundaries wouldn’t have done that. He would’ve immediately recognized that this was his child’s issue, which, for whatever reason, was making him believe that his father never learned with him. And because a healthy father would’ve immediately realized that it was his son’s issue and not his, he would not have felt unwarranted shame (like Sender did) and would not have answered back defensively, causing the relationship to further deteriorate.
THE SHAME TRIGGER
Almost anything someone else says to them or even the way a person looks at them can trigger the feeling of deep shame.
Yossel had a wholesale clothing business that he shared with his partner, Mendel. He wanted to branch out into outerwear for men. Mendel sharply disagreed with this plan. He told Yossel it wasn’t a smart decision, how could Yossel think for one minute that it made sense? Yossel had many reasons why he thought it made sense but because he was so used to his feelings being trampled on as a child, all he could feel as Mendel was speaking was an intense emotion of shame that was causing him to shut down. This sensation of shame is known as a shame trigger and is a well-known phenomenon in the lives of adults who’ve grown up in a home where there was trauma or neglect. Individuals with mental health disorders such as social anxiety disorder, a disorder that involves excessive selfcriticism are also prone to shame triggers. Almost anything someone else says to them or even
him. Instead of internalizing everybody else’s thoughts, opinions and feelings as his own, he was now able to recognize the difference between what he thought and felt as truth from what another thought and felt was truth. He was finally able to calmly discuss with Mendel the pros and cons of making the move to expand their business. I have seen this many times in my practice. Sruli came into my office complaining of this shame issue. As an example, he related that at a wedding he attended the previous week, his neighbor came over to schmooze. In the middle of the conversation, the neighbor mentioned an innocent story from their youth. Immediately, Sruli described feeling strong emotions of shame, his face started turning red and he couldn’t continue the conversation.
This person has a hard time even changing what needs to be changed in himself and his life because he gets so overwhelmed with shame by everything the other person may say. the way a person looks at them can trigger the feeling of deep shame. The other person may not have negative intentions in his remark or his look but the shamed person will invariably interpret it as negative and, because he has no emotional boundaries, will always take it on as truth. This person has a hard time even changing what needs to be changed in himself and his life because he gets so overwhelmed with shame by everything the other person may say. Since he takes everything in as truth (and feels so shamed by it), he will have a hard time separating what makes sense to change and what doesn’t . It took time but once we were able to clear the openings around his heart, Yossel was able to establish his emotional boundaries, not only with his business partner but with everybody around
THERE’S NO NEED TO SUFFER
Through helping him work out his issues, we were able to get Sruli to understand that because of his lack of emotional boundaries, he was internalizing everything the other person said as true and worse, as reflecting something negative about him. People, like Yossel, Sruli and Sender, with poor emotional boundaries suffer in all areas of their life – personally, socially and in business relationships. This does not have to be. With the right help, everybody can establish healthier emotional boundaries that will enable them to lead healthier emotional lives.

CREATING HAPPY MOMENTS TOGETHER By: Gelly Asovski, LCSW-R, RPT-S
Many mothers are surprised when they hear that they’re not alone in feeling bored and impatient when it comes to playing with their children. With extensive to-do lists waiting for a mother’s attention, it can feel like a waste of time to sit and play with the kids; there’s so much else to do! It also feels more satisfying to get “stuff” taken care of than to entertain cute kids who simply want our attention. However, our kids need us, and play is not just about keeping them busy. Play is a child’s first language; it’s where everything happens for a child. Gary L. Landreth, one of the founders of Play Therapy, said, “Birds fly, fish swim and children play.” This is how children learn about the world and experiment with life. Play is where our children develop socially, emotionally and physically, and how they bond with those around them. When contemplating the idea of playful parenting, we need to take into consideration our busy lives as moth268

like we either have a lot of time to play with our kids or no time at all. Some days we have more time and ko’ach, and on the other days, we can aim for quick, happy interactions as we go through the busyness of the day. Younger children may be happy with ten minutes with Mommy and then toddle off to do their own thing, while a six-, sevenor eight-year-old will want more time with Mommy to do an activity together. I recommend doing one major activity a week that children can look forward to and then several smaller activities that can be done on a daily basis to create a happy environment in the home. Here are some favorite activities that can help create a happy, playful home. Check them out and please share your favorites so we can build happy, resilient homes for our Yiddishe kinderlach.
ers. Visualize the time you spend with your children every day: the morning rush to school, the back-from-school homework hour, suppertime, bedtime and more. These are times when you can take two minutes, five minutes and ten minutes and make that time playful. Each child will then be able to get happy mommy-time as you go about your day with simcha and fun. 1.
COLORING — This sounds like a very simple activity, but that’s exactly why I like it. Kids love to color, and they love it when Mommy colors with them. It makes them feel so important. And you don’t even need coloring books; all you need are some crayons, markers and blank paper. If you have them, glue sticks and kid-friendly scissors can take this activity to the next level. As kids get older, you can prepare arts and crafts according to their age level to help them express their artistic talent together with you.
2.
BOARD — I’m a
GAMES
big fan of the classics. Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders, Connect Four and Othello are all short games that kids love. Card games like UNO are fun too, and chess wins hands-down with the boys! We spent lots of happy hours playing games with our children when they were younger, and it was time well spent.
3.
PLAY
DOUGH
—
Children love making shapes with play dough, as well as braiding challah and forming various real-life creations. This is an activity children of many ages can do at the kitchen table with light supervision. I recommend taking pictures of the beautiful play dough shapes once they’re complete because some children have a hard time putting away the play dough when done. The photos will remind them of the time spent on happy activities.

4.
PERLER BEADS — Kids love this de-
tailed activity. Some mothers might think this craft is only for girls, but boys like designing boards of melty beads too! The more options you have in terms of colors and shapes, the more fun the kids will have and the longer the activity will take. You will need to be on top of ironing the final designs and make sure there are no beads on the floor if there are babies around.
5.
PUZZLES
— Some kids are seriously into puzzles! When they’re younger, 10- to 24-piece puzzles are perfect. Then come the 48-, 60- and 100-piece puzzles that delight children when they’re a bit older. If you have a child who enjoys large puzzles, I recommend doing the puzzle on a large sheet of cardboard to keep it safe until you glue it together. A tip that I learned is to store the cardboard with the puzzle under the Shabbos tablecloth when Friday comes around. No one notices and the puzzle stays safe.
6.
BAKING — I always enjoyed baking cookies with my kids. My secret to making it an easy activity was preparing a large dough, dividing it, and freezing it as logs. Then, whenever we had time for an activity, I had the dough ready. I always kept some sprinkles and chocolate chips handy and avoided a big mess by using a disposable tablecloth when we were ready to bake. The kids would create designs and faces on the cookies and then watch them bake in the oven. Of course, we all had yummy cookies afterward and the memory of a wonderful afternoon with minimal mess. Nowadays there are great recipes out there that don’t require a mixer, which are sure recipes for learning and fun!
7.
DRESS-UP — Dress-up is always fun on a rainy day. Why wait for Purim to come once a year? You can take out some costumes or use random things from around the house (like old snoods, heels, scarves and hats). Kids are so creative, so be prepared for a really good
time and tons of laughter. I encourage you to get in on the action and join the fun.
8.
TAKING FUN PHOTOS — Taking photos
together with the kids can be a blast! I have to say that this is one of my favorites, especially with my grandkids. I have been known to prescribe doing fun activities and taking photos to create “happy albums.” As kids get older, they can start scrapbooking.
9.
HIDE-AND-SEEK —
This fun game is always a winner! Kids love to hide behind couches and beds, under tables and chairs… and even behind the door. Take turns being “it,” and have a blast together. This is a perfect opportunity to release some energy while indoors or to break up some sibling rivalry.
10.
CARNIVAL GAMES — We
have such wonderful memories playing jumping games in garbage bags and throwing candies down a hill for our kids and the neighbors to go find as an activity. Contests like “eating licorice without using your hands” are a personal favorite… Eating an apple swimming in a bowl of water is also lots of fun, especially with some friendly sibling competition! Enjoy, and happy parenting!

Paint Firsts The first known use of paint was in ancient times in the Mediterranean region, where people used ochre, a natural clay earth pigment found in iron-rich soil, to create their artwork. Ochre can range in color from yellow to a deep orange, red or purple, depending on the different minerals and chemicals that can be found in it. Many ancient tribes used ochre to create cave wall paintings or other forms of art. Skip ahead a few thousand years. Paint became a little more advanced, and whitewash was born! Whitewash was a cheap, white paint made with lime, milk, flour, or whatever other ingredient was available. It was first known to be used in England in 1591. Nowadays, whitewashing is a term used to describe trying to cover up unpleasant facts — much as whitewash was used to give a dirty surface a fresh, clean look.
Paint and the White House As you can imagine, painting the White House is a big project. The White House gets a full new coat of paint every four to six years, and 570 gallons of paint are used for a full repaint job! The paint color “Whisper White” is used on both the exterior and interior walls.
The Chemistry of Paint How exactly does paint work? Paint is composed of a binder, a solvent and a pigment. The binder, usually resin, is a natural, sticky substance that bonds together the pigments. The solvent is like a paint thinner; it dissolves the components in the paint to create a smooth consistency and evaporates as the paint dries. Finally, the pigment gives the paint its color. There are five basic types of paint: oil, watercolor, acrylic, gouache and encaustic. Each one has a different texture and is used for different kinds of painting. What sets them apart from one another? The difference lies in the solvent that is used. Oil paints are turpentine-based, while watercolor, acrylic, and gouache are all water-based. They have different ratios of water to pigment, which changes the texture in each one. Encaustic paint is waxbased, and heat is used to melt together the wax and pigment. Oil paints are used mostly for wood finishing or metal structures like bridges and boats, as they dry hard and can handle a lot of wear and tear. Acrylic paint is most often used for painting interior walls, since it dries quickly and has a thick texture. Oil- and water-based paints can both be used for canvas paintings, as well. You would choose a paint type based on the techniques you want to use and the textures you’re trying to create. Oil paints take a while to dry, which can be an advantage if you want to do a painting over a long amount of time. Watercolors are translucent and let light filter through, which gives paintings a luminous quality, while gouache is opaque and has a matte finish.

Paint Colors Hospitals and doctors’ offices can be scary, intimidating places, but once inside, there is a certain sense of calm. How do they accomplish that? Hint: It’s on the walls. Colors have a psychological effect on us, and professionals are aware of that. White gives a sense of calm and sterility, which reassures patients who are confused or in pain. Blue and green, often the color of choice for scrubs or dentists’ offices, are the most relaxing and refreshing colors, probably because they remind us of blue oceans and green grass.
A Historical Art Heist On March 18, 1990, the biggest art heist in history occurred. Thirteen works of art, valued collectively at $500 million (!), were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. At around 1:30 a.m., two men dressed as police officers claimed they were responding to a disturbance call and got one of the security guards to buzz them into the museum. The thieves tied up the two security guards on duty and put them both in the basement. They then proceeded to go through the museum and steal random pieces of art. The entire heist lasted just 81 minutes. The worst part about this heist is that 32 years later, it still hasn’t been solved! No arrests have been made, and the art pieces have yet to be found. There is an active $10 million reward for any information leading to the paintings.

The most popular paint brand is Sherwin Williams, which debuted in 1870. Their “Pure White” was the best-selling paint color in 2021. A piece by Leonardo da Vinci is currently the most expensive painting in the world, sold for $450.3 million in 2017. Manhattan’s Metropolitan Museum of Art contains over 13,000 paintings.

Drimia winery is located in the ancient dwelling of Sussiya, near the ruins of the ancient synagogue and on the land where grapevines were grown in biblical times. Situated along the southern Judean Hills, between mountains and desert, at 890 meters above sea level, this semi-arid area is a meeting point between Mediterranean and desert climates. All of our wines are produced with carefully selected premium grapes, and prepared with the utmost care and dedication to details.
