Care365 has ALWAYS committed itself to the highest level of service possible for our valued patients. As such, we have instituted a clear system to service the Covid demand while we can still dedicate significant resources for patients who do not exhibit Covid and usually utilize our facility for their emergent medical needs. There will always be two lines: Covid and all others - and 2 separate sign-in sheets. Patients will be seen by the order of their medical priority. We understand that these times are frustrating, however, we ask that you respect our staff and your cooperation will be greatly appreciated by our beloved, overloaded and strained staff. [A good word or two goes a long way.] In order to meet the excessive medical demand - until further notice: (times subject to change),

PLEASE NOTE NEW TESTING HOURS: Last check-in for PCR tests: 8:00pm Last check-in for NAAT tests: 8:00pm Last check-in for Rapid tests: 8:30pm Last daily patient check-in: 11:30pm Only verbal and email (with no paper attachment) confirmation will be provided for all Covid testing requested. Exceptions will be made for emergency travel and medical procedures. These exceptions shall apply to overnight PCR results - otherwise, please expect a 2-3 day turnaround. Please be aware that times can change quickly due to the overwhelming situation - so please monitor our electronic boards for updates.

We are committed to the highest level of service and as such have instituted these guidelines in order to continue to honor that commitment and meet the exorbitant demand.

Thank You for choosing and trusting Care365 for all your medical needs.

TIMELY CUTENESS

(Re: Space for Play: Issue 328) Thank you for this fun (and nostalgic!) issue. Like everyone and their first cousin, I had my kids home with the flu this past week, and your doll-centered issue was such a treat. My kids loved looking at the gorgeous 3D illustrations of the Mitzvah Kinder and hearing about how they came into existence. The doll collection was also lovely, and they did not stop looking at the enticing pictures time and again. The cut-out activity, as well, was so timely and too cute for words! Thank you for the entertainment. An Appreciative Mother

MY CLAIM TO FAME

(Re: Bucketfuls of Play, Issue 328) I’ll always be a child at heart, so Mitzvah Mentchees was created for me. Besides owning them and giving them as gifts, I’ve unknowingly become part of the “Mishpacha”! There was great excitement in our family when I was at first introduced — what a famous grandmother I am! I was hoping to read in the article, though, how I got the job at the grocery store. Does anyone in the industry actually know me? Mrs. R. Brull

THE LOOK WE WANT

(Re: Welcome to My Home, Issue 328) I can’t get enough of Dee Interior’s beautiful projects! They are so eye-pleasing; I just can’t stop looking at the photos. WHERE ARE THE EYESORES?

(Re: Welcome Home, Issue 328) I scrutinized every nook and cranny of this dreamy playroom with a not-so-slight twinge of envy. But as I was going to make a plan of action for my home, I noticed that all those sore thumbs that make up the mess in my playroom are actually missing in the Kahans’ glamorous pictures! Where are those functional and halfway-functional doll carriages? Where is that cumbersome highway for the trucks? Where are all the dolls and their highchairs? Where are those shtreimels and tichels for dress-up fun? Where are the pogo sticks and jumping toys? And what about the card games and board games? A Frustrated Homemaker

Immune Booster

DEVOIRY SIGAL RESPONDS: I understand your frustration! Every home has big, bulky toys, which is why I wrote that the big toys should be lined up against the least visible wall. In this playroom we put the bulky toys in a separate closet off the playroom and the games in uniform containers on the shelves.

Can you provide cooking times and instructions for making these recipes on a stovetop or slow cooker? Also, the design series is amazing! R.W. RIVKY FRIEDMAN RESPONDS: These recipes were developed specifically for pressure cooking. Using either a stovetop or slow cooker would require not only longer cooking times, but also adaptations in the instructions (such as the potatoes

SPACE FOR A HIGHER PURPOSE

(Re: Welcome Home, Issue 327) Thank you for providing our community with such quality literature. I was excited to find your article about renovations. I’d like to comment on the comparison of beautifying our homes to the Beis Hamikdash’s grandeur. As we create a spacious, comfortable home, let us not forget that while we await the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash, our focus should not be about making ourselves comfortable in our temporary dwellings in galus, but rather about using the space to enable us to serve Hashem through simcha and harchavas hadaas. Thank you again for this great weekly read. May we merit to make choices that will bring us nearer to the day we are all waiting for, bimheirah b’yameinu amen. Y.R.

WAITING FOR OUR HOME

(Re: Diagram by Design, Issue 327) I am thoroughly enjoying the very detailed and well-researched home architecture series, and the ending remarks are especially appreciated. It is a crucial reminder that ultimately, “home is where the heart is.” And, indeed, let us not get lost along the way… To those who are in the process of renovating, redecorating, moving — or hoping to be there soon (me!), let me share with you my constant tefillah: “Tatte! Your blueprint is ready! Your space-planning is complete. The precise material, color scheme, and look — they’re all done. Top craftsmanship! Please get Your Home ready. And may we be zoche to live there soon.” A Temporary Dweller THE MONSEY VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS. The streets can be dangerous!” Yochanan turned around and found himself looking into the face of the very businessman he had come to see. As soon as he found his tongue, he shared the events of the evening, down to the last detail of his humiliating discharge from the hotel lobby. “Oy!” The businessman clucked in true empathy. “Come inside; you’ll be my guest tonight.” The two walked back into the hotel together, and the businessman marched straight to the front desk where he ordered a private room for Yochanan. “We’ll talk over breakfast tomorrow morning,” he promised. Indeed, after hearing Yochanan’s tale the following morning, the businessman wrote out a hefty check. Yochanan thanked his benefactor and turned to leave. As he walked out of the hotel doors for a second time, he couldn’t help but realize — his very moment of despair was in fact his moment of salvation. Just as he was thrown out of the hotel in the darkest of night, the doors of hope were being cranked open for him. Had he not met the businessman specifically at that moment of distress, the outcome of his efforts would surely have been very different. Often that darkest moment, the one that seems to us to be absolutely terrible, is actually the harbinger of our yeshuah.

It was a cold night, and the frigid air matched Yochanan’s frozen emotions.

* * * * * As the leader of Klal Yisroel, Moshe was entitled and obligated to daven to Hashem for the load to be lightened. The problem with Moshe Rabbeinu’s question was in the wording. By using the expression of “harei’osah,” which contains the root “ra,” or bad, he insinuated that the results of his initial actions were bad. With Hakadosh Baruch Hu, there is no ra. At times it may be hard to see this and we may have questions, but the underlying point remains fixed: Hashem never does “bad.” Everything is good; we just aren’t capable of seeing the good in the situation yet. As misfortunate and bleak as circumstances may seem, there is good hidden below, even if it is currently obscured from our view.

Did You Know? As Makkas Barad hailed havoc upon Mitzrayim, a frightened Pharaoh summoned Moshe Rabbeinu, begging him to daven for the hail to stop. Moshe agreed, and no sooner had he lifted his arms heavenward than the plague stopped. Hashem had prepared a specific measure of punishment for Pharaoh, and the remainder that was cut short through Moshe’s tefillah was to be rained down upon Klal Yisroel’s enemies in the future. Forty-one years later, when Yehoshua fought five Amorite kings, Hashem brought deadly hail upon them. The thunder resumed in the days of Yehoram, frightening the camp of Aram to flee. Some of the hailstones still remain suspended, waiting for the days of Gog u’Magog. “Tzaddik gozer v’Hakadosh Baruch Hu mekayem.” May the tefillos of our gedolim be answered just as swiftly as Moshe Rabbeinu’s, and may the hovering barad be rained down really soon.

When

the Post-it on my fridge can no longer accommodate my list of errands, I head out. No small feat for proficient shopping procrastinators like me. The car turns left — a new route for me — and the view is clear and blessedly free of traffic. I time the way; eleven minutes flat from the center of Monsey to my destination. Definitely quicker and less jerky than a ride on the local congested streets.

The car practically zooms down scenic streets, and I relax. The usual tautness that shopa-hatics like me deal with as soon as they hear the word “errand” fades with the smooth ride. As soon as I enter the new state-of-the-art Super Square Center located in the heart of New Square, I know I’ve found a treasure, a retreat I can call my own.

Pineapple Supermarket The brand-new Pineapple Supermarket reminds me of… well, pineapples. Regal, orderly, and so, so juicy. The spacious aisles and bright, modern lighting are unique treasures for shoppers like me. I value the tremendous selection of each product as I calmly select my favorite brands. I spy the source of the tantalizing coffee aroma right away. The extensive coffee and drink bar at the entrance of the store is strategically situated across the yummiest selection of baked goods by the famous Tam Eden bakery. To round out the morning excursion, the all-new expansive sandwich bar boasts an exclusive selection of toppings, spreads and salads. Goodbye, post-Chanukah diet. On second thought, the produce aisle has the solution. Vibrant colors of obviously quality fruits and vegetables are beautifully displayed — Hashem’s candy aisle in all its glory. At the corner of Aisle 9, the child within me is delighted with the full-sized hopscotch game designed into the floor tiles to make every kid’s shopping experience fun. A large “Coming Soon” banner announces the meat department about to make this supermarket even greater. 110

It’s the type of shop that has you wishing for twins. Or triplets. It’s a bubby’s haven. It beats a spa day anytime — the heady scent of baby perfumes mingling with fabrics so soft it’s mesmerizing. But not to worry; although they weren’t on my list, the neat display of replacement parts jogged my memory and, bingo, no more excuses not to bake. It’s not all that hard to make your home look like a magazine ad with the myriad containers and organizing solutions available at Sparks. And what’s more? Their five-star customer service makes you feel like you have a personal organizer at your service.

ShoeZ If you’re choosy (like me), ShoeZ is really worth a trip from anywhere. Rows and rows of delicate shoes, trendy boots, and classic penny loafers are lined up in a customer-friendly fashion at eye level. The decor is breathtaking. Rows of cream leather benches incorporated in the design have me imagining the fun kids have here when doing their erev yom tov shopping. I pinch my baby’s toes. Maybe if I’m lucky he’d outgrown his shoes overnight. Because who can resist a black lace-up with red piping? I call all the people I know whose kids’ brand-new school shoes are new no longer to try ShoeZ.

KidsGo Sparks

Good to go! That’s my only thought as I enter this store. These proprietors obviously know what shopping for kids is like. And here there’s a one-stop solution. Come in knowing your closets are empty and leave knowing your kids are good to go for the season. From size 0 all the way to size 20; from everyday apparel to Shabbos finery; and endless, endless basics such as every color pants, shirt, skirt and top. One trip, and your family is sure to be dressed smart and classy every day. And they’re getting ready to up the show. A large banner informs one and all of the many brands readying to make the grand debut at KidsGo the coming season. I see some of my favorite fashion brands on the list such as Kipp and Kin+Kin. So stay tuned for a full selection of finer clothes for your family.

One last treasure to join the mall in the coming weeks is Givtink. Look out for the opening date of this unique shop with the taste of a Meah Shaarim Judaica store. Everything Judaically giftable, from practical to whimsical to super unique, will be available to gift yourself or others. But their real specialty lies in personalizing these gifts on the spot. All professional machinery is on-site and there’s no wait time. Choose it, personalize it, and gift it.

As I take the elevator down, I realize it has been a shopping experience unlike any other. The hominess, the spaciousness, the absolute convenience, and the selection has me taking out another Post-it to start my errand list all over again. (For the record, yes! Printing pictures is first on the list.)

Pills To Treat COVID-19 Debut, Albeit With Caveats

Falsifying Vaccination Cards Now a Criminal Offense in NY

Two drugs newly authorized by the Food and Drug Administration will help recently infected individuals beat back COVID-19, reducing the chances of severe or fatal reactions to the virus. ABC News reported that regulators greenlighted Pfizer and Merck’s COVID-19 pills in mid-December. Both were shown to benefit high-risk patients who contracted the virus, but needed to be started within five days of symptoms appearing. The federal government is buying up Pfizer’s Paxlovid and Merck’s molnupiravir pills, which are expected to be effective against the Omicron variant. Initial supplies will be limited at first, and will be available by prescription only at pharmacies, community health centers and other locations. Infected individuals will need to take the pills for five days, and they will be available free of charge. The new pills are intended for those who are likely to suffer serious effects from COVID-19, including the elderly and those with heart disease, cancer or diabetes. While Paxlovid is authorized for children ages twelve and up, it isn’t recommended for those with severe kidney or liver problems or those taking statins, blood thinners, immunosuppressants, steroids and some antidepressants, reported NBC News. Molnupiravar is authorized exclusively for adult use and only for patients where other treatments such as monoclonal antibodies are not available or are deemed inappropriate. Twenty-one months into the pandemic, Peter Anderson, professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, hailed Paxlovid’s potential. “Paxlovid is a breakthrough drug,” said Anderson. “This could make a real difference in the pandemic by making an effective COVID treatment available to many people.”

With proof of vaccination mandates taking effect in workplaces, private schools and many other locations, New York has taken steps to head off those who are looking to game the system by making falsifying vaccination cards a criminal offense. Governor Kathy Hochul signed the legislation into law last week; this made forging a COVID-19 vaccination card by hand a class D felony, and doing so digitally a class E felony. The governor noted that those misrepresenting their vaccination history jeopardize their health as well as those they interact with. State Senator Anna Kaplan, who sponsored the bill in the Senate, said that the Omicron variant made the law a necessity. “It’s never been more urgent that we protect this process from fraud so that the health and safety of the public isn’t compromised by bad actors using fraudulent vaccine cards or passports,” said Kaplan. The ease and speed with which New Yorkers have been able to procure fake vaccination cards has been astonishing, noted Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, who introduced the bill in the Assembly. “This new law will undoubtedly help prosecutors and other law enforcement

hold people accountable for the damage they are doing to public health by undermining the efficacy of vaccination requirements in workplaces, businesses, restaurants and more,” said Dinowitz.

As Omicron Continues, Israel Attempts To Keep It at Bay With Israel doing its best to keep the latest COVID-19 variant at bay, a statement written last week in the name of Rav Chaim Kanievsky calls on parents to vaccinate their school-age children. According to Yeshiva World News, the statement was reviewed by Rav Chaim and says “vaccines should be ordered at Talmud Torahs and schools, and the children should be vaccinated.” Pediatric vaccination rates in Israel have been low, with just 10% of all fiveto eleven-year-olds taking the shot. Those numbers are significantly lower in the charedi community, with just 1.9% of children in the same age group being vaccinated. Israel had been considering a fourth round of booster shots for older residents and those at higher risk, but that plan has been tabled at least for now as the Ministry of Health continues reviewing infection and hospitalization rates.

Meanwhile, Israel has been seriously considering relaxing its very tight travel restrictions that have 68 countries, including the United States, listed as high-risk areas. According to Israeli Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz, travel regulations will be eased when it becomes clear that Omicron is being spread communally in Israel and not through travel.

What should have been a simple trip out to his driveway turned into a nightmare for a local man when he was attacked by a subcontractor who was cleaning up his yard. Hamodia reported that the landscaper who had been commissioned to do the job brought in another laborer to finish the work, but neglected to tell the homeowner that he was sending in a replacement. When the homeowner went outside to his car, the subcontractor insisted on being let into the house to use the restroom, without explaining that he had been hired by the original landscaper. Not knowing that the worker had been hired to clean his lawn, the homeowner refused the request and was returning to his house when the subcontractor attacked him with a pair of scissors. Witnessing the attack, the homeowner’s wife called her son-in-law, a member of Chaverim of Rockland, who arrived at the scene as the worker was attempting to throw the homeowner over a second-floor porch railing. He called for backup and was bitten by the worker as he came to his father- inlaw’s assistance, with Chaverim arriving and subduing the worker until the Ramapo Police Department arrived. An eyewitness said that Chaverim had to help police place handcuffs on the worker. “It was obvious that he was on some sort of substance, and it took quite a bit of time and strength to put the cuffs on him,” said the observer. Hatzolah of Rockland examined the victim at the scene and determined that his injuries did not warrant hospitalization. The worker was transported to a hospital by EMS under police escort where he remains under observation as of Sunday night.

CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO RECAP: Gadi

Berg reveals to Osher that Ariella has been living in their home, babysitting for them. Osher explodes in fury, realizing that his parents sent her to follow him. He packs up and leaves Rabbi Reiness’ yeshivah, intent on running away again. On his way out, Yosef meets him and tries to convince him to stay.

I

t was nearly ten o’clock when Rabbi Reiness dropped his wife and the Berg children off on the yishuv. Without even getting out of the car, he turned around and headed back to Acco. Sarah would stay with the Bergs until tomorrow morning, when Osher’s sister was supposed to return from Bnei Brak with one of the families of the yishuv that had gone away for Shabbos. He called home from the road, activating the speakerphone. “Hello,” he said when someone picked up. “Who is this, Shlomo?” “Yes, Rebbi. Osher hasn’t come back. The bachurim haven’t found him.” “I hear,” he said slowly. “Who went to the train station? Menashe and Chaim?” “Yes.” “And what did they say?” “That the train to Tel Aviv left a few minutes before they came, at about five after nine.” All kinds of harsh thoughts meshed into a hard knot in Reb Elazar’s mind. He gazed at the road ahead and said, “I’ll call his parents to tell them what happened. You continue to scout around the area, and tell Doron Nachman to keep his eyes wide open, okay?” “Doron Nachman?” Shlomo sounded surprised. “Yes. I’ll speak to him myself later. First I want to call Osher’s father, okay?” The phone rang a number of times at the Erenbaum residence before someone picked up. Reb Elazar was happy to hear that it was Mr.

Erenbaum himself. “Gut voch, Reb Yigal. It’s Elazar Reiness.” He was met with a cold murmur. One of the sharp thoughts extricated itself from the tangle in his mind and whipped at him; they hadn’t spoken since the results of Osher’s evaluation. “Listen, Reb Yigal, we have a problem. Osher found out that his sister had come to Acco, and that she’s been in the northern region for the past few months. For some reason he took it extremely personally, and left.” “He left?”

“And if you’re what? Frustrated? Sad? Angry? We can deal with emotions, Osher, but running away is not a way of dealing with them.”

“Yes. We expected him to come back, and when he didn’t, we searched the whole area. I sent some of the bachurim to the train station; it’s the most convenient form of transportation to the center of the country.” He fell silent for a minute. “So, we haven’t found him. The train to Tel Aviv departed the station a few minutes before his friends came. Knowing him, it’s possible he’s on it.” “Coming home?” Mr. Erenbaum glanced at his wife. “Maybe,” Rabbi Reiness replied. “Or maybe to the place where he was previously?” “Daas Torah? I don’t think there’s a chance they’d take him back.” Reb Elazar didn’t say anything; that was hardly the point. He merely said, “So if you want to see whether he arrived, I recommend that you wait at the train station in Tel Aviv.” “The question is at which stop…” Mr. Erenbaum said thoughtfully. “There are two stops that could be noge’a here. Okay, I think we’ll go to both. Thanks, Rabbi Reiness.” Elazar didn’t know if Osher’s father’s voice had become sincerely interested, or if that was just his imagination. “Please be in touch.” A call waiting signal cut off his final sentence. He glanced at the screen; it wasn’t a familiar number. Noises on the line. A faint echo; a monotone. A traveling vehicle? A train? The echo continued. “Osher?” He heard a cough in response. “Osher, is that you?” “Yes.” “Oh, baruch Hashem! Are you on the train?” “It’s better for me not to say where I am.” Osher’s voice was heavy, a bit querulous. Maybe he was disoriented by this abrupt move he’d made. “Well, that may be so. But we’re worried about you, and we’d be happy to hear that you’re okay.” “And if I’m not okay?” Osher spoke hoarsely. “And if I’m —” “And if you’re what? Frustrated? Sad? Angry? We can deal with emotions, Osher, but running away is not a way of dealing with them.”

“I am weak,” Osher said. “And I have no energy. Okay, I need to hang up. I just wanted to tell you that you don’t have to worry about me.” “Of course we’ll worry,” Reb Elazar said. “You don’t really expect us to let you leave and then forget about you forever, right? I’m sure your parents are also worried.” He did not let on that they were planning to wait for him at the Tel Aviv stations. Osher didn’t reply. “Osher?” Elazar asked. He glanced for a minute at the dark, silent phone screen affixed to the dashboard near the wheel. “Osher?” Three short beeps confirmed that the conversation had been cut off. He tried to call back the number, but unsurprisingly, there was no answer. All he heard was a generic voicemail message. Doron Nachamn greeted him in the near-empty yard. “What’s doing, Rebbi?” he asked. “Any news about Osher?” “I got a phone call from him, but he didn’t tell me where he was.” “What did he say?” Reb Elazar sighed. “I hope he’s not doing anything foolhardy. Doron, the minute he comes back, wake me up, you hear?” “Of course, Rebbi.” “And keep a close eye out here the whole time. You remember that tomorrow is our day, right?” “Of course I remember. Do you think it’s related to Osher’s departure?” “No, Osher ran away on his own.” He smiled tiredly, heading for the stairs. “As long as I assume he wasn’t their plant, of course.” “Right,” Doron replied thoughtfully. Rabbi Reiness looked at him. “You know that I really appreciate your thinking skills and logic,” he said after a moment. “Can you tell me what you’re thinking?” “I’m just thinking that we are in an Arab area here, and all kinds of Arabs wander around the place all the time. They don’t attract our attention, because, really, they’re just part of the scenery, but we can never know if some of those Arabs

were sent here to sniff around. And it’s possible that one of them noticed Osher when he left and tried to harass him…” “To force me to capitulate?” “Exactly.” Rabbi Reiness stood in the middle of the silent yard for a moment. A few of the boys peeked out from the open carpentry shop; the rest, apparently, had gone to sleep. “I’ll try to get back to that number he called me from,” he said heavily. But the phone rang and rang, and no one answered. Osher’s family, meanwhile, wasn’t being very successful either. Yigal waited at one station, and Ariella and her mother staked out the other one. They stood in an inconspicuous place, so Osher wouldn’t notice them while still on the train. Maybe they didn’t hide well enough, or may-

decided to land there again. They’ll probably send him straight here, if so, and then we’ll see what to do.” “Call me to let me know if that happens, and I’ll come to Bnei Brak to see him.” Reb Elazar looked out the window. It was 1:30 in the morning, and the sea was inky black. The lights in the courtyard cast a dim ray inside the gates, and Doron Nachman paced back and forth, more serious and worried than usual. His eyes met Rabbi Reiness’, and they both shook their heads in unison. “Yes,” Osher’s father agreed. “I’ll call you. For now I think we can go get some sleep. We’ll leave the door unlocked.” An hour later, Ariella was sitting in her small apartment, staring at her little suitcase. She was on the phone with Sarah Reiness, who was telling her about the conversation between Gadi and Osher, the one that had led to the whole eruption. Sarah herself was in her sister’s house at the moment, speaking in hushed tones. “Look carefully,” Ariella said. “I can imagine him coming to the yishuv suddenly, or even here, to my apartment.” She leaned back on the couch. “He’s no fool. He won’t just wander around the streets without any purpose. Even during his most difficult times he didn’t do such things. If he is going somewhere, it’s to find himself a new place.” She bit her lip and looked at the tree outside. It was a single, lonely tree in a small, not very pretty yard in Bnei Brak, but the strong aroma of blossoms filled her lungs. Maybe Osher had stayed in Acco and was just playing games, so that everyone should get down on their knees and beg him to come back? As unpleasant as the thought was, it made sense. “I want to ask you a big favor, Sarah,” Ariella said finally. “I was planning to come back to the yishuv tomorrow with the Roths. They’re leaving at seven. But…” “But?” “Can you stay there until the kids get back from school, or ask a neighbor to

“I’m going to give him two petch,” Ariella said forcefully. “Well, no, not quite. But I’ll speak to him once and for all the way he deserves to be spoken to.”

be Osher hadn’t planned to get off at one of the two stations in Tel Aviv, because he didn’t show up at either one. And who knew if he had been on the train at all? ***** That night was a sleepless one for all those involved. The Erenbaums returned home to Bnei Brak, and no one spoke much. Osher’s father updated Rabbi Reiness with the dry facts, and they spent a few minutes discussing whether or not to involve the police. Osher’s phone call would certainly make the police think that it was just an attention-getting antic by a problematic teen, but the concerns of a slightly hostile environment could not be ignored. “I think we can wait for the morning to ask Daas Torah if he turned up there,” Osher’s father said at last. “He may have

have them over if you can’t cancel your appointments? I’ll leave for Acco on the six o’clock train, and I’ll spend the morning searching in the city. I want to look for Osher myself.” “And if you find him, what will you do? Hide from him again?” “No, he already knows I’m here, anyway.” “What will you do if you find him?” “I’m going to give him two petch,” Ariella said forcefully. “Well, no, not quite. But I’ll speak to him once and for all the way he deserves to be spoken to. He’s not a little boy anymore. It’s time for him to grow up.” “Do you really think that’ll help?” Sarah asked quietly. Ariella opened her mouth and then closed it. “No, I guess not.” “I’m in favor of your going to search for him,” Sarah said slowly. “And believe me, I’d be happy to stay here with the kids until later in the afternoon. But I think that you should think about how to go about persuading him that you, and everyone else, want the best for him.” “I really do need to find the right words.” Ariella spoke heavily. “And not just repeat to him all the annoying, pres-

She was smiling now. “It’s a whole night’s work.” “Even more. But it’s hard to sit and think when I’m so worried...” Sarah sighed. “My husband is also very worried. But Hashem will help. I’m sure they’ll find him soon.” “I’m also worried,” a voice whispered behind her. “Gadi, you should go to sleep,” his aunt said, without even bothering to turn around. “It’s very, very late, and it won’t help Osher if you’re tired in cheder tomorrow, right?” “When I’m stressed, it’s hard for me to fall asleep,” the boy argued. “I need to take care of Gadi now, Ariella,” Sarah said into the phone. “So let’s 136

finish our conversation, and you work on finding those words that you want to tell him. And… daven.” ***** At first light, even before calling the Erenbaums, Rabbi Reiness pressed “redial” on the number that Osher had called him from. Two rings. Three. Four. “You!” The voice was so furious that Rabbi Reiness had to move the phone away from his ear. “Believe me, you don’t deserve to have me answer your call at all, but I did, just to tell you what I think about you. Who are you?! Why are you calling people after eleven at night, huh? Wait, let me check — at twenty-five to twelve, no less! And you tried three times!” “I’m sorry, I just —” “You’re sorry! Who do you think you are?! A guy is tired, he finally goes to sleep… What is this?!” “I’m really, really sorry,” Rabbi Reiness said. He walked through the courtyard, with his tallis and tefillin tucked under his arm. “I have a very serious problem, and I need your help. That’s why I didn’t notice the time.” “You didn’t notice the time, huh? Well, I did notice it.” “Again, I’m really sorry. I’m just looking for someone…” He was quiet for a moment. Did this man have an Arab accent? No, not at all. Still, it was not worth telling him that Osher had called from his phone. If the delusional possibility was actually reality, and Osher had chalilah been abducted by someone from the Al-Alami family, then this man could very well be the abductor. And if Osher had called from the man’s phone without him realizing it, he, Elazar Reiness, didn’t want to endanger Osher by revealing that. Rabbi Reiness almost laughed at his wild assumptions. If they would have abducted Osher to force Rabbi Reiness to capitulate and concede Shikovitzer’s land, they would have contacted him by now. And if Osher would have endangered himself to call, he would have given more significant information about where he was, instead of just sounding dejected and unclear. Still, caution was always in place. What did he have to lose by being overly cautious? To be continued…

YONI WAS UNFOCUSED AND COULDN’T SIT THROUGH AN EIGHT HOUR DAY, LOOK AT THE NACHAS! Hello, You plant the seeds and the seed blossoms into a beautiful flower. While the flower is still blossoming. Wanted to share my hakaras hatov and Nachas with you. Yoni just changed high schools mid 10th grade. He excelled in nearly all his subjects. English still a challenge - but so much better. He has become SELF MOTIVATED - taking notes, doing chazara, not waiting till the night before, and TAKING PRIDE IN HIS LEARNING. This is something he decided to do in the last folder months. He is exercising with such preciseness - you would never even imagine that he was once “low tone” and couldn’t do a jump rope or jumping jack. Just muscle!! He had a BEAUTIFUL REPORT CARD this year and now just got an email that he is on HONOR ROLL for his academic excellence. Not bad for a kid once in resource!! See forward email below!! Wanted the share with you - because I truly believe the PROGRAM THAT YOU IMPLEMENTED ENABLES THE BRAIN TO WORK AS IT SHOULD. It coordinates

all the systems together - so that at the right time of maturity - it’s all set to go! Thank you for all you did for Yoni all those years ago!! We hope to stop by anyway one day and say hello - and thank you in person. Hope all is well with you and your family. Have a good shabbos, Yoni’s Mother -------- Forwarded message ------From: Yoni’s Principal Date: Fri, Jul 2, 2021 at 11:13 AM Subject: Honor Roll Mazal Tov! Your son, Yoni, did an amazing job in his Shiurim and classes and has been awarded Honor Roll for the year. This honor is a reflection primarily of his academic achievement but is also a signal of his general comportment as a developing Ben Torah. Wishing you continued Nachas and joy from Yoni. ALPHABET SOUP My cousin introduced me to this delicious soup. She uses baby carrots, but my family prefers the flavor of regular carrots. Either way, it’s a winner. (My kids would just love to see more alphabets floating in the soup!)

INGREDIENTS 2 pkg. Kemach mushroom soup mix (a packet that contains beans, barley and alphabet pasta) 10 cups water 3 T. oil Pinch of baking soda 1 large onion 4 small zucchini 2 yellow squash 1 lb. carrots 2½ T. kosher salt

DIRECTIONS 1. Place the beans and barley in an 8-quart pot with water, oil and baking soda. Bring to a boil, then lower the flame and simmer for 1½ hours. 2. Finely dice the onion. Slice the vegetables and add them to the pot with the salt and diced onions. 3. Cook for an additional 45 minutes. (If needed, add 1 to 2 cups of water.) 4. Use a strainer to sift the spices and vegetables from the seasoning packet. Add only the pasta to the soup and cook for 15 minutes.

Setting the Record Straight “We read The Monsey View every week. We enjoy it immensely!” the letter in our inbox read. “However, in one of your recent articles on keeping warm with blankets during winter months, it said that quilts today are for decoration and display only. I must disagree! I’ve been a professional quilter for over eighteen years, and I’ve made hundreds of quilts.” The letter was signed by Malka Serkin, and we reached out to her so she can tell our readers about her passion for the an154

cient art of quilting, one that is shared by more people than you can imagine. One glance at any piece of her quilting is enough to recognize the love she imbues into every stitch that comprises the stunning patterns and designs she arranges at whim: Each item is an experience you will not soon forget.

Sewing Through Pain… And Hope Malka began her relationship with needle and thread when she was just five years old. A daughter of Holocaust survivors,

she was given the very clear message that having a skill or craft is not only useful when living in other countries, but could be vital to survival as well. (This proved to be prophetic, as Malka would later see when she moved to the United States.) Malka’s mother was talented at embroidery, cooking and baking, and her father was a craftsman who made matzeivos (including his own!). Living only two miles from the Jordanian border, Arabs would sometimes infiltrate their neighborhood, and when Malka’s parents needed to leave the house, they instructed the children to remain inside for safety reasons. In those moments, Malka was content to embroider

away. When the time came, her parents encouraged her to attend fashion school. She was entranced by textures, patterns and the vibrancy of colors. While Malka’s parents supported her in every way, her mother was her biggest fan and would often express amazement at Malka’s extraordinary abilities. Many years later, when her mother passed on, Malka put down her needle and thread. Losing her mother was a lasting ache, and she simply couldn’t go near her sewing machine. Over time, she considered picking up sewing again — but something was missing, and it would be two whole years until December 29, 2021

This is called postage stamp quilt. Each square was cut to two inches.

Malka could fill the void. One day, while shopping for groceries, Malka noticed a quilting magazine and immediately bought a subscription. Two years after her mother’s passing, the quilting world was tugging at her heart. Amazingly, Malka learned how to quilt on her own, from the articles in the magazine as well as tutorials. Malka’s passion was back and ready to make the world a brighter, more loving place.

the best machine that would manifest her quilting goals. She told him about the Bernina, a sewing machine that gives more room between the needle and machine itself, making it easy to pull a quilt through. He stressed that the most important investment for one’s craft is to have the equipment needed to create a superior product. When he passed away and left her with a yerusha, Malka saw the opportunity to buy the machine — just as her father had wanted her to do.

Optimize Your Craft

Spreading a World of Color

Malka’s father became ill and needed to reside in a rehab facility in Eretz Yisroel, and even as he declined, he encouraged Malka’s craft. When she showed him a baby quilt, he expressed his pleasure at seeing her heart opening once again. As a craftsman, Malka’s father implored her to purchase

Malka once made a baby quilt, only to realize that two letters were backward! From that point on, Malka’s husband Stu became her second set of eyes. After she lays out her creation, he checks to make sure that the design is cohesive and that everything looks good.

This is the latest quilt Malka made. Here the binding is being added to the edges of the quilt. 156

“He may tell me to switch around things, add things here or there,” says Malka, “and it’s especially helpful when it comes to letters, where I simply cannot make a mistake.” But as Malka says, humans aren’t perfect. “Only malachim don’t make mistakes. I can’t say that each quilt is 100 percent perfect. Embroidery stitches are evenly spaced, not perfect. So it’s perfect imperfection!” Malka also mentions that she was bothered by the comment that quilts are currently being used only as wall hangings. “I had the pleasure of attending the international quilt show in Houston, Texas, in 2005,” she says. “It was an experience of a lifetime. There were thousands and thousands of handmade quilts. Some were from the 1800s and completely made by hand. There were so many quilts to see, and people use them on their beds. They’re very heavy and warm.”

tioned that he’s traveled the world to visit dozens of factories and has never seen such meticulous, exact work.

Sewing Malka’s Magic

Her Heart in Every Stitch While Malka puts her heart and soul into every stitch, she also gives generously when she’s moved to help someone in a difficult time. During the lockdown, there was a man who wanted to donate fabric to be sewn into masks as a merit for his son, who had just passed away from COVID-19. A friend connected him with Malka, who eagerly took on the task. Soon, hundreds of her beautifully detailed, hand-sewn masks landed in Good Sam Hospital. It turns out that this man who made the donation is a representative for a well-known fabric company. Later, he thanked Malka for her efforts and men-

While Malka embroiders and appliques by hand, she prefers to use the machine to piece together the blocks of fabric. Whether by machine or hand, Malka infuses a bit of her heart and soul into every stitch. While Malka can make anything, from wall hangings to bags to wallets, her greatest joy is working on baby quilts. “Hashem gave me the gift to create,” says Malka. “Whether I’m making a quilt, table runner or anything in between, I don’t go by rules of color. Whatever I pick up seems to work.” It’s easy to see that Hashem is guiding her hand as she crafts each unique and stunning creation.

The good news for the Monsey area is that Malka’s workshop is right here! Still, a visit to Malka is worth a trip from anywhere. She and Stu, her pillar of support, are ready to introduce you to her remarkable craft. You don’t want to miss it! Malka Serkin can be contacted at mollyserkin@yahoo.com.

It

was cold and rainy — a windwh ippi n gyou r-b ones kind of cold, typical of a true winter day in Eretz Yisroel. The Haifa streets were quiet, aside from the constant pitterpatter of the steady droplets that were washing the streets clean. From time to time, a person wrapped in full winter gear would appear, rushing to reach their destination before the water seeped through their every layer. With such strong winds, no umbrella could last more than a few moments. I peered out the window of the beis medrash, glad for the dry haven the yeshivah walls provided. The daf Gemara swathed me in a cozier warmth than usual, and I turned to my chavrusa with an extra burst of cheshek. Just as I was leaving the beis medrash for lunch break, a bachur slapped me on my back and said, “Fried, someone is waiting for you outside.” Outside? I could not fathom who in the world could be standing outside in this downpour. Besides, I knew practically no one in Haifa, where my yeshivah was. This must be some kind of mistake, I thought as I rushed to the front entrance. The person had moved inside and was standing bent over on the front mat, with rivulets of water dripping from his waterlogged jacket. His plastic-covered hat was pulled low to his face, trickling raindrops down to the floor. I did a double take. “Tatte?” I asked incredulously. “What brings you here?” The ride from Yerushalayim to Haifa in those days

entailed a four-hour journey by public transport. My father had never before visited me in yeshivah, and now here he was, on this bitter winter day! Was there something important he needed to say that could not be shared over the telephone? An uneasy question rose in my mind. But my father’s broad smile quickly assured me that everything was okay. He asked me to show him my room in the dorm and soon we were walking together through the yeshivah halls, my father’s footsteps leaving a wet trail wherever we went. In my room, I helped my father peel off his soaking jacket and rushed to bring him a hot drink so he could defrost a bit from the freezing outdoors. “How are you doing?” my father asked between sips. Then he began to ask me about every aspect of yeshivah life. He wanted to hear how things were working out with my chavrusas, with the rosh yeshivah’s shiur, with my friends and roommates. He looked around at the dormitory accommodations and inquired about the food and other technical aspects of my day-to-day life. For close to an hour, we schmoozed. I enjoyed spending time with my father, but deep down, I was waiting for the punchline. What was the real reason for this visit? Soon my father stood up and walked over to his jacket. He fished inside the pocket

and pulled out something small, round, and wrapped in newspaper. He turned to the second pocket and took out another round package. “Here,” he said as he handed me the two packages. “This is what I came for. I wanted to give you these.” I opened the paper and found two jelly doughnuts, with hardly any powdered sugar left. Somehow, deep inside the pockets of my father’s jacket, they’d stayed perfectly dry. I thanked him profusely and ate them both on the spot. Meanwhile, my father shook his raincoat from the raindrops that remained and put it back on. Then he put his hat back in the plastic bag and turned to leave. “Tatte,” I said as soon as I finished eating my treats. “Before you go, come! Let me show you around. Surely the mashgiach and my maggid shiur will be happy to give you a report. You can ask them how I’m doing.” But my father looked at me and said, “Yisroel, I know you are learning well. I did not need to come all the way to Haifa just to hear what I already know! That’s not why I’m here. I came just so that I could give you this little treat and tell you face-to-face how much I think of you and how much you mean to me.” And just as abruptly as he had arrived, my father left. I watched him go, retracing his steps to the bus stop where he would catch the bus for the four-hour ride back to Yerushalayim in the heavy rain. It’s nearly 30 years since that wet winter day, and those eight hours of fatherly love still melt my heart. For me, they stand out for eternity as a patch of warmth in the icy cold.

or me, winter is spelled S-O-U-P. While warm weather stirs my salad creativity, in the winter, raw veggies just don’t do it for me. And while recipes are fine sometimes, I often prefer just to wing it — sautéing some onions and garlic in the bottom of the pot, dousing that with water, and then cubing and tossing in more or less whatever the yeshivah refrigerator has in abundance that day. Of course, these experiments are sometimes more successful and sometimes less, so occasionally I’ll ask my yeshivah kitchen assistant to have a taste before letting my experiment go public. And such was the case on one winter day. “It is pretty good,” he said, nodding, after savoring a spoonful. “But it’s not as good as the best soup I never had.” He paused expectantly. “Um, don’t you mean ‘ever’ had?” I asked, feeling like I was about to walk into a well-set trap. “Nope.” The guy grinned as if to confirm my suspicions, and launched into his tale: “I’d been to some pretty unusual youth hostels in my six months of post-college European backpacking before I was frum, but one specific place took the prize.” “Sounds like there’s a story there!” I said. “Well, we were above the Arctic Circle — in Norway’s Lofoten Islands, to be exact — where the midnight sun never sank below the horizon all 24 hours of the day,” he explained. “Lacking a circadian rhythm to keep them anchored, the hostel’s clientele of budget travelers simply demarcated days and nights as they pleased. And in the communal kitchen at any given time there would be blearyeyed breakfast eaters, others garrulously gabbing over hearty lunches, and still others winding down over laidback suppers after an all-day hike — all at the same time. “Unlike some of the ‘old-timers’ who’d been staying there for weeks, I’d only arrived two days earlier and was planning to leave on the ferry that day, so I never deviated far from what my watch told me. Now it said that it was midday, and I was hungry. “The problem was that I had neither an on-hand food supply, nor the budget to obtain one. Food in Scandinavia was outrageously expensive. The markets wrapped each piece of produce individually, like jewels, and charged prices to match. “Being a bit of a showman in the kitchen, as you know” — he winked — “I flamboyantly pulled down a communaluse pot and began hacking away at a couple of carrots and celery stalks I did have, hoping to catch the notice of the crowd. And it worked…” “‘Whatcha making?’ a fellow traveler asked, peering into the pot. “‘Soup. A big, delicious soup,’ I told him. ‘Want some?’ “‘Sure. Y’know, I have a sack of baby potatoes we can put in there, too, if you want.’ “‘Why not?’ “As the first guy peeled, more folks gathered, with more offerings. Chickpeas, spices, mushrooms… the works. I stirred the ever-growing vegetable soup — now just about ready — looking forward to my first good meal in a while, when a large can loomed in front of my face.

“Suddenly… ‘Hey, if we’re going to eat, let’s at least add some meat!’ I followed the deep voice, looking up… and up… and up, at this huge German biker’s train-track smirk. The guy’s uber-loud motorcycle and his violent tattoos had made me edgy from the first time I saw him, and now he was buying into lunch with a jumbo can of genuine German pork sausages. “Considering the situation, I knew it would be very bad manners to say no to his offer — even if he hadn’t been the size of an oak tree. My fellow soup-stockholders were all for it, so I gave a little nod to the guy, who whipped out a gleaming multi-purpose knife from his leather pants, opened the can with one of the blades, and sliced its slippery contents into the soup with another. I slunk away from the pot. “‘Hey, after all that work, aren’t you going to have some?’ slurped the urbane travel buddy I’d met there. I’d been planning to travel with him via ferry to the mainland and then by train back down to Trondheim. “‘Um…’ I hedged. “As you know,” my assistant said, “I wasn’t yet keeping kosher; I didn’t even really know much about it back then. But I’d become a vegetarian over the several months prior, feeling it was healthier and somehow better for my Jewish soul. It wasn’t set in stone, though, and if someone had thrown in a little chicken or even beef I probably would have just eaten around it. But pork sausage? “‘C’mon, have some. It’s really good,’ the fellow insisted. “Everyone seemed to be enjoying it, and I was very hungry... But maybe my visit to the Dachau concentration camp on my way north was still too fresh in my mind… “‘Nah, not for me,’ I told him with a shrug. ‘You know, sometimes just the cooking is filling enough,’ I joked, hop-

“As the first guy peeled, more folks gathered, with more offerings. Chickpeas, spices, mushrooms… the works.” ing he’d let up. “‘Whatever.’ The guy eagerly scooped the last bits from his bowl. ‘I heard the boat’s already at the dock. Let’s grab our packs and head out.’ “Now, the Norwegian Sea on its calmest day is a roiling ride. The tossing ferry, together with its fragrant dieselfume bouquet made my head spin. Seeking distraction, I noticed a group of fellow passengers leaning over one of the guardrails peering into the water. Maybe they’d seen a whale or something. “But this was no sightseeing group. I walked over, just as my buddy — face green as the sea — lifted his head. ‘Whoa, I’m as sick as a dog,’ he croaked. ‘That greasy soup… bad move. Boy, were you smart to pass it up.’ “I moved down the line of heaving ex-hostelers, to see Big Biker — the cook who’d spoiled the soup — now looking more like a weeping willow than a mighty oak. And I realized that something, or Someone, much bigger than him had just given me a message. “And the rest” — my assistant waved his arm theatrically around our glatt-kosher kitchen — “is history.” Nesanel Yoel Safran is a writer, chef and student of Torah and life. Yankel straggles into my office at 2:15. Our appointment was scheduled for 2:00. Settling himself into the chair, he immediately launches into why he’s here. His wife is why, he tells me. “She made me come. She says I’m ruining the shalom bayis in the house. I scream at the children and scare them.” At this point, I ask Yankel a few leading questions and he starts to open up. He’s unhappy, his life is a mess, he says. But, his biggest problem is his failing business. No matter how hard he tries, he is barely making enough to support his growing family. Not only that, Yankel condemns himself for being so unsuccessful. He feels ashamed that his brothers are all doing so much better than him. And because he feels so bad about himself, when he comes home from work, he has no patience for 7 year old Moshe who wants to tell him in great detail about his day at school. Or for four year old Eli who’s crying because he’s overtired and needs to go to sleep. He also gets into silly fights with his wife over why the grocery bill is higher this week than it was last week. Yankel has no idea that his feelings of not being successful in business and his actual inability to be successful in business stem from his subconscious core belief that he’s not worthy of making money. He doesn’t know that this subconscious belief that he carries around is simply a story he has been telling himself for years about his inadequate money-making abilities and his unworthiness, in general. He doesn’t yet know that it’s not the truth and never was the truth.

beliefs we carry around about ourselves and/or from past unprocessed feelings and emotions. Another client may come to me feeling depleted. He has no energy to do anything. I ask him to tell me some more about himself and his feelings. He owns a store, he tells me, and every time a potential customer walks out without purchasing anything, he experiences shame and rejection. He doesn’t know why. He thinks he must be crazy. As we begin to work together, I explain to him that the shame and rejection he feels when someone doesn’t buy his merchandise has nothing to do with the present moment but everything to do with the past. Perhaps as a child, he was shamed for not cleaning his room or for complaining about having to do a chore or for any reason. When a child is shamed continuously, he receives the subliminal message – I am not worthy. He begins to tell himself the story that he is not worthy and he carries that story with him into adulthood. So, now, every time he is faced with a situation where someone does not agree with him or doesn’t want to buy his product etc., the old childhood feeling of shame over being unworthy will be triggered. What I try to help my client understand is that his “I’m not worthy” belief is a story he has told himself over and over again and that it is based on a faulty, false childhood perception. Sometimes just by recognizing the truth of these words, the client can begin to release some of the shame he has carried around for years. The other component that is often intertwined in the faulty narrative my client will tell herself is the unprocessed emotions that come along with feeling shame, for example. Let’s say, as a child, my client was embarrassed in class by another little girl. She held in her feelings until she came home and could tell her mother. She starts to share her story with her mother and perhaps begins to cry. But instead of allow-

EMOTION IS A PHYSICAL ENERGY IN THE BODY

Fake news The fact is that the long-held beliefs we have about ourselves play a large part in our success as functional and happy human beings whether at home, school or in the workplace. And until we recognize that we’re carrying these false, negative stories about ourselves and then go about changing those narratives, it is almost impossible to lead a happy and successful life. There can be many reasons for a person’s depression, anger or lack of energy. From my experience, however, I’ve noticed that often our negative feelings stem from the faulty 186

ing her daughter to express her pain which is normal and healthy, her mother says something like, “Big girls don’t cry”. At that moment, my client’s emotion of pain and embarrassment goes unreleased and stays stuck inside of her. If this scenario happens often enough, she will end up carrying around a lot of unprocessed, stuck emotion that can cause much damage in later life. Emotion is a physical energy in the body. The nature of energy is to flow. When energy isn’t flowing, it means it’s stuck. When it’s stuck, it causes blockage. So, emotions, as energy, needs to flow (which may be why some people define emotion as “energy in motion”.) If the emotions aren’t allowed to flow then they too will get stuck and cause a blockage in the body. Emotional digestion or rather emotional indigestion is similar to physical indigestion. When someone is not digesting their food properly, it gets stuck and causes stomach or abdominal pain. When someone does not digest their emotions properly, the stomach is also usually the affected organ. If we have a heavy, emotional issue that is bothering us, that we cannot “digest”, then often, not only will we experience emotional pain but actual, physical stomach pain as well. The more unprocessed emotions a person has, the bigger the blockage will be. If someone feels pain, it is natural and normal to cry it out. Not allowing someone in distress to either talk out or cry out or do whatever they need to do to express their pain, is a great disservice to them. It is my belief that although they are often connected (the unprocessed emotion and faulty childhood belief), they will require two different healing approaches. I compare it to a house that has a faulty foundation. Because the foundation is faulty, one of the walls has cracked. We now have to fix both the foundation and the wall (even though one caused the other).

A MUDROOM MADE FOR ME Winter is here, and so is the endless paraphernalia that comes with it. While the gear is warm and cozy, everything needs a place, and that’s what I wanted for the mudroom of the Katz family with their bunch of adorable kids. “A place for everything and everything in its place.” So well-worn a phrase, but true!

TH E ROOM:

Mudroom THE CH ALLENGE:

Since this mudroom is the space that greets you when you step into the Katz abode, my list of criteria for its design read like this: Pretty. Super functional. Easy to maintain. The first impression in a home really sets the mood, and a pleasant welcome lends the space serenity and joy. It was so important to get this right.

Color Compass I chose black and white to make this room attractive while keeping a neutral balance for both the boys and girls. Here, the design pops without being juvenile. “Sharp” just about clinches it!

The Closet That Has It All This closet was to be the focal point of design and function in the mudroom, and it needed careful planning to prepare it for its various roles. First, we removed the broken doors. They didn’t have to be replaced, especially since we were designing a closet interior that begged to be seen. We put up wallpaper for added interest, and I must say this one checks all the boxes: sharp, inviting, attractive and clean. Wallpaper is a real boon in decor, especially in a small space where you don’t need a lot. The personality it adds to a room makes this element worth more than the sum of its parts. In going with the super-functional theme, I knew that lots of hooks and individualized space for stuff was in order: space for the kids to hang their backpacks, space to park their boots, hooks for the kids and hanging space for the adults. What you’re seeing is actually one large closet, with that mock wall in the middle as a type of optical illusion that works well as a divider between the kids’ and adults’ areas. We added the bench to serve a multitude of functions. I wanted a place for the kids to sit when they put on their winter footwear — and a place to keep that footwear, too. And the space just looks so much more customized with this addition. I chose the wood top rather than a black one to avoid too much matching. Also, as you already know, I am a huge fan of the warmth and versatility that wood brings to a space. Moving on to the top of the closet, I initially felt that the worn hanging rod would have to go. But it was still so sturdy — it would be a waste to trash it. We painted the rod and supporting brackets black instead, and the effect is gorgeous. 194

Woods and Shoulds Rather than going with a lighter wicker, I chose the dark-colored baskets for added interest, and because, like I mentioned, I steer clear of too much matching. The highlights in these baskets pick up and complement the bench top. This is how we mix and match while still sticking to a frame of reference. The same goes for the wooden hangers that I chose. There, I brought in a different color while still being consistent with the general theme.

…And Everything in Its Place The wicker baskets really serve their function of minimizing clutter with aplomb. They’re large and deep and labeled appropriately. One is even assigned for purchase returns. The key to avoiding clutter is: Work actively to prevent it. Therefore, my goal is to preempt it by creating a place for everything. I hung magazine holders in the kids’ section and labeled each with a name. It’s such a nifty way for the kids to have their accessories handy. I also added baskets on the top of their section for extra gear, because there are always some stray hats and lonely gloves hanging around! 196

Light Once the closet interior was prettied up, I felt the outside could use some sprucing up too. We added greenery in an eyecatching planter, but something was still missing. Light. We needed more light. But between fixtures and electrical work, light can run up some big numbers, so we put up a trio of battery-operated sconces that act as beautiful and functional decor. Mission accomplished!

Devoiry: This series has been a powerful experience for me. And a humbling one, too! I hope you take the general information shared to heart and the particulars with a grain of sheetrock, because as unique as your family is, so is the design that works for you. Before I bid you adieu, I want to share one last tip. If redecorating in any shape or form doesn’t work for you right now, here’s one impactful and cost-free way to enhance your space: Mirrors and art on your walls should be hung at eye level. This may be a shocker to most because we usually tend to go high, but why should you crane your neck to enjoy your art? Keep in mind that whatever aesthetics you hang are there for you to see and enjoy comfortably. Rule of thumb? Measure about 60 inches from the floor until the middle of the art. That’s eye level. Obviously, adjust it if your family members are shorter or taller than the average, or if the art is placed over a very high-backed couch or headboard. Try it. Bring your wall hangings down to eye level, and see your space transformed from commercial-like to homey.

Welcome home!

In this home series, the team at AB Design gives us a glimpse of the different popular home designs for new constructions and explores their various factors.

Whereas a new home in Monsey once meant choosing between a high ranch, a ranch, a split, or perhaps a colonial, the residential construction scene has seen a complete revolution over the past few decades. As developments, townhouses and side-by-sides have sprung up all over our town — and well beyond the heimishe community’s original borders — what most families take into consideration when in the market for a home has completely changed.

WEEK 1: FLATS

Week 2: Duplexes

Week 3: Private Homes

F E AT U R I NG : T H E PR I VAT E HOM E This week we explore the freestanding home on its own property, once the birthright of any suburban dweller and now a luxury that often has homeowners moving farther out to obtain it.

T H E DR AWS → First off is privacy. Sole ownership of a property translates to privacy in the home as well as in the yard, the ability to keep the sounds and the shades up without compromising privacy, and the ability to install pools, playgrounds or whatever one wishes on their property. → Independence: Decisions are not contingent upon property co-owners or a condominium association. → This type of construction offers the option of a car garage, which provides both wintertime comfort and storage solutions, with many private homes even including garages that can hold two to three cars. → With the basement usually three-quarters underground, the main entrance requires just a few stairs. → Most modern private homes allow for an extra dose of luxury: a two-story entrance, ten-foot ceilings on the main level and nine on the second level, and a lot of spaciousness. → Private homes are highly customizable and can be designed to suit any specific family’s needs. → The space allows for a variety of rooms, like a separate dining room and living room, a family room, playroom, den, sunroom, butler’s pantry, separate Pesach kitchen, indoor sukkah, mudroom with a separate entrance, as well as an indoor reading nook or sitting room on the upper level.

→ Providing that it’s allowed by local codes, the walk-in/basement level has the potential to be used as an accessory apartment. → Additionally, the basement can be finished to accommodate a spacious play area, a recreational area, suites for guests or maids, a home office, an event room, etc. → The multilevel layout allows for temperature control in the different home areas separately. Having the sleeping and living areas separate also optimizes home organization and allows for privacy when sleeping. → A typical private home will generally have significantly more square footage than a multifamily unit. → Between the basement, garage, closet space and attic, storage space is usually abundant. → Hosting in style is an option in a private construction, which often allows for private guest quarters.

T H E DR AW BACK S → Private homes are the most costly construction. Its maintenance and utilities also cost a great deal. → Maintaining and cleaning a luxury private home requires a lot of work, both from the part of the family/cleaning staff, as well as from professional maintenance services. → With no neighbors immediately nearby, children don’t have easy access to playmates as they do in shared living units. Adults, especially, will much sooner stop to chat with those living within feet from their own home than visit the neighbor’s private property. → There are generally a lot of stairs to walk in private homes, which many can find strenuous. In fact, today, some private homes include small 5x5’ elevators.

A LOOK AT THE PLANS These renderings are of a private home development we recently did on Viola Road. The plans are approximately 6,000 square feet. The main level includes a two-car garage. The foyer as well as the great room are two stories high. On the second level a bridge-style hallway overlooks the foyer and great room on either side and connects the master suite with the rest of the bedrooms. Notice the Jack and Jill bathroom upstairs.

SO YOU WA N T A N UPGRADE? Here are some ways any type of home can be upgraded at a reasonable cost. → Tray ceilings and cove lighting in the dining room, living room, or master bedroom. On the top floor, proper tray ceilings can be constructed, and on the lower levels, the look can be obtained by dropping the ceiling at the sides. → A fully-tiled bathroom, versus one that is only half-tiled. → A taller door (an 8-foot, or even 9-foot, door versus the typical 6.8-foot door), which gives the entrance a modern look. Similarly, taller doors inside the home also upgrade the decor by far. Decorative doors and handles is another upgrade you can do throughout the home or at the entrance. → High heads (spotlights). → In the kitchen, lighting above and below cabinets. You can also upgrade a kitchen with taller cabinets that reach the ceiling. → Nicer, bigger windows. The price difference is not so significant, but the look is so much more contemporary.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS While the ceiling’s the limit when it comes to upgrading a home, the happiest families are not necessarily those inhabiting luxurious homes. Home should be a place of warmth, love and simcha, and we often see those in small and simple spaces truly being the homemakers of the homiest dwellings. Gavriel Einhorn and his architectural company, AB Design, specialize in commercial and residential projects running the gamut from schools, yeshivos, camps, commercial buildings, health centers and private homes, to supermarkets and shopping malls. This humble ball of soft fiber is used primarily for medical or cosmetic purposes. It originates from the cotton plant, a shrub found in subtropical and tropical regions. Cotton Commercialized Care and Crafts Light and little as they are, cotton balls rank high on the medical supplies list; they play center stage in ointment application, cleaning wounds, stopping blood after a shot is given, and soaking up blood during surgical procedures. In skin care, cotton balls come in handy for those who wish to protect their faces from the blemishes that can be caused by touching the skin with their fingers. And, of course, without the cotton ball, our preschool sheep would be missing their wool, the skies their clouds, and the zeidies their beards! Another art use the cotton ball has: Painting or ink stamping where one creates the appearance of texture in an art project.

Cotton wool has been used for sanitary and medical purposes since way back when, while cotton balls have been used as far back as 1801 to apply gold leaf, as evidenced by an artists’ manual for that year that recommends using a “squirrel’s tail or cotton ball” to press the gold leaf into place.

There is some evidence that the nifty things were being mass produced in 1816, as seen in a fabric company’s advertisement. But if there was a magic year for cotton balls, it would have to be 1937. That was the year Joseph A. Voss went ahead and invented a machine that unraveled rolls of cotton and cut them at fixed intervals, gifting the collective household with the cotton pad and cotton ball.

Did you know? Cotton balls aren’t friendly fluffs picked off an organically grown plant. The fibers are often processed with bleach and other chemicals, which can make them iffy for skin use. No worries, though; there are sterile cotton balls available. Cotton in medicine bottles were originally placed there to prevent the pills from jiggling around in the bottle and breaking, avoiding incorrect dosage if consumers were to pop broken pill fragments. Though they’re not necessary today as pills come coated, some companies have kept the cotton for the sake of same old, same old.

Cotton Balls or Cotton Pads? For general skincare routine, pads work best. They’re less absorbent so they’ll eat less of the product applied to them.

Cotton Ball Hacks Thought you’re through with cotton ball uses? The list doesn’t finish. No, really. When stubborn water spots show up on chrome, place cotton balls soaked in a vinegar-water solution on them for a few minutes to dissolve mineral deposits. Soothe a mild sunburn with a cotton ball dipped in vinegar, or a baking soda–water mixture. Remove permanent marker from skin with a cotton ball dipped in milk. Lift ink stains from clothes with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol. Place the balls in the new shoes you’re breaking in to avoid or relieve painful skin friction. Soak them in bleach and place them in hard-to-clean corners to do the work for you. Let sit for an hour or two, then rinse the area with warm water. Dampen cotton balls with vanilla extract and place in the back of your fridge to keep it smelling fresh. To sprout seeds, place a bunch of cotton balls into a glass jar. Place the seeds on either side of the cotton and keep them damp. Watch magic happen in just a few days!
