JUST IN TIME
(Re: Through the Eyes of the Newcomer, Issue 298) Thank you for the article this past week in which baalei teshuvah and geirim shared their perspectives and feelings; it came to good use when I was out of town for Shabbos and ate the Shabbos day meal with a family of which both the husband and wife are baalei teshuvah. I also learned to read Rashi script from that sefer, because it has the Rashi in both regular Hebrew script and in Rashi script, so I compared the two. Even today, ArtScroll is such a blessing in my life. I’ve learned so much through the resources they provide, which I’m now in a capacity to share with others through my work. An ArtScroll Student

This survey really made me think, reflect and appreciate that I am still living in the same apartment as when I first got married, and remember all the benefits and perks I originally had (which I no longer have). DOING WHAT I CAN
(Re: Inbox, Issue 294) I would like to thank you for a beautiful, quality magazine. I’m writing in response to the letter about Esther bas Anna, who is, lo aleinu, imprisoned. I was stirred by her plight and heartbroken by her suffering. Though I’m not the type to visit or reach out, I felt that doing nothing about this would be wrong of me. Hashem gave me the idea to begin davening for her daily, doing on her behalf the segulah from the heiliger Divrei Chaim and begging Hakadosh Baruch Hu to make her days easier and that she should be freed b’karov l’chaim u’l’shalom. I’d like to ask the letter writer to update us with any good news. May our prayers on behalf of Esther bas Anna be answered b’karav. I also wanted to publicize the 30-day segulah from the Divrei Chaim, through which I’ve seen yeshuos. It includes donating $2 over a 30-day period as well as reciting several pesukim from Yeshaya daily (Yeshaya 1: 13-18) H.J.

Dear Yiddishe Mamme, I was in Hava Java with my daughter when you walked out together with your daughters. One of them looked like she was struggling. My daughter and I exchanged fleeting self-righteous glances without thinking, being utterly inconsiderate of your feelings. I noticed a hurt expression on your face, and I feel terrible about it. There is no way to know someone else’s struggles and pain, and we should have been mindful to be accepting and respectful. If you are reading this, please accept this apology, and I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me. Sincerely, A Fellow Yiddishe Mamme Who Cares

PARSHAS NASO Countering the Yetzer
This week’s parsha discusses the nazir. The concept of nezirus is among the most puzzling in the Torah. What is the significance of this consecration? Why is abstinence so commendable? SHIMON HATZADDIK, who was a Kohen Gadol for 40 years, said that all his life, he never ate from the korban of a nazir. Besides one time. When Shimon Hatzaddik saw this particular nazir, he was immediately taken by his beautiful countenance. He had gorgeous eyes and handsome curls. Shimon Hatzaddik expressed his surprise that the man wished to destroy the beauty on his head and cut his hair to conclude his days of nezirus. The nazir explained, “I was a shepherd for my father. One day, as I was drawing water for the sheep, I noticed my reflection. I was amazed at the sheer beauty that peered back at me, and my heart began to fill with arrogance. I realized then that I had to stop my yetzer hara in its tracks. ‘Why are you making me proud of something that isn’t mine — my body that will be returned to the wormy earth?!’ Then, chastising my yetzer, I swore, ‘I will cut my hair for the sake of Heaven!’” Shimon Hatzaddik was so moved. He kissed the nazir on his forehead and exclaimed, “May there be many nezirim like you in Klal Yisroel! It is on a nazir

such as you that the pasuk says: “Ish ki yafli lindor neder nazir l’hazir laHashem” (Bamidbar 6:2). * * * * * Fast forward a few hundred years. The great Reb Zusha of Anipoli was a young man, raising his family. When his daughter got engaged, Reb Pinchas of Koritz gave him three hundred gulden — a large sum in those days — toward wedding expenses. As Reb Zusha traveled back home from Koritz, he passed through a small town. He couldn’t help but notice a commotion on the streets. Apparently, someone had fainted, and Reb Zusha heard that it was a local widow who had just discovered that she’d lost a large sum of money. All her life, she had been scrimping penny by penny to be able to marry off her daughter, and now, to her distress, the money was gone! “Tell her I found the cash,” Reb Zu-
sha immediately said. With this, they were able to rouse the woman. She slowly regained her strength and calmed down. But then something interesting happened. Reb Zusha insisted that he wasn’t prepared to return the entire amount. Rather, he wanted to keep a portion of the cash for himself in reward for his efforts. The woman was furious. “Is this the way one performs the mitzvah of hashavas aveidah?” she demanded. “I want the entire amount back!” Again, there was a commotion on the streets. Bystanders snickered, mocking Reb Zusha. To think that a Yid would not be embarrassed to behave this way! Of course he must return the entire sum! But Reb Zusha maintained his stand. He would give back most of the money, but not all. He fi-
To think that a Yid would not be embarrassed to behave this way! nally agreed to come along to the rav of town and accept whatever psak the rav issued. In the end, Reb Zusha returned the entire amount to the woman and left town in disgrace. A while later, the rav of this town was with Reb Pinchas of Koritz. “The Rebbe always speaks highly of Reb Zu-
sha,” he remarked. “How can this outlandish behavior be explained?!” “Reb Zusha did not find that widow’s money,” the Rebbe replied. “It was his own money — or rather it was the money I raised for him so he could marry off his own daughter.” The rav listened, but still felt that a piece of the puzzle was missing. The next time Reb Zusha came to Reb Pinchas of Koritz, the Rebbe asked him, “I understand that you were prepared to give up your own money to help this widow. But why didn’t you do the mitzvah completely? Why did you ask to keep some of it?” Reb Zusha explained that when he saw the extent of this widow’s pain, he knew right away that he would do everything he could to assuage her grief — even if that meant forfeiting the money he desperately needed to marry off his own daughter. “But as soon as that thought crossed my mind,” Reb Zusha said, “the yetzer hara jumped in, too. He tried to make me feel proud of this noble act. As soon as I felt I was succumbing to the middah of ga’avah, I decided I must do something to counteract the arrogance. “By asking for a portion of the money, I knew I would be scorned. That’s what I wanted! This way, I would not fall into the trap of ga’avah, and I would have the opportunity to do the mitzvah with shleimus.”

* * * * * When one accepts upon himself the restrictions of a nazir, he is going against the grain. He abstains from wine, from cutting his hair and from defiling himself — behaviors that most of the world considers acceptable and normal. He goes against his personal preferences and rises above them. The Even Ezra explains that this is why the pasuk uses an expression of “pela,” or wonder — “ki yafli lindor.” The nazir is doing a wondrous thing when he chooses this route. He is following the Torah’s technique for overcoming his yetzer hara. When a person feels his yetzer gaining momentum and does something against the norm, he is delivering the strongest slap to his evil inclination. This is the way the beautiful nazir in Shimon Hatzaddik’s day overpowered his yetzer hara, and it is also the way Reb Zusha overcame his own personal confrontation with his yetzer.

Did You Know? Shimshon was the only person in all of Tanach to be officially labeled a nazir. Shmuel Hanavi was also a nazir; his mother Chana abstained from wine from before his birth. Nonetheless, the pasuk never actually calls him a nazir.

CHAPTER 8 RECAP: After days of seclusion, Shabbesai Tzvi emerges, immerses himself in the bay and announces that his wedding was to take place that day. After an exalted ceremony, Shabbesai Tzvi approaches his bride and a Torah scroll is revealed, much to the shock of the assembled. The elders leave.
A
fter several moments that seemed like an eternity, the people recovered from the initial impact of the revelation, and a different sort of feeling was awakened among those who’d remained for the ceremony. If there was any truth to the rumors that Shabbesai Tzvi was to be Moshiach, wasn’t it appropriate that he marry the Torah? Wouldn’t the union of Moshiach and the Torah form an irresistible force that would smash the chains of exile that had shackled the Jewish people for so many centuries? Could this wedding they were witnessing be the beginning of the long-awaited deliverance, the Final Redemption of the Jewish people? Perhaps it had come at last. With a feeling of profound longing, the people watched Shabbesai Tzvi step to the side of the Torah. They watched him perform the chuppah himself. They watched him read the kesubah. They heard him recite the blessings and saw him drink the wine. They watched as he danced after the ceremony with the Torah gripped tightly in his arms.
70 / THE MONSEY VIEW
Hundreds of spectators followed Shabbesai Tzvi and his followers to the wedding feast. Rows upon rows of tables laden with food and wine had been set up under the open sky. The guests ate and drank with joyous abandon, and when it grew dark, they danced in drunken circles by the light of flickering torches. Shabbesai Tzvi left early, but the celebration continued late into the night. The following day, Shabbesai Tzvi was summoned to a meeting of the elders. They sat at a long table, their solemn faces impassive. At the center sat the elder who many weeks before had asked Shabbesai Tzvi to divorce Leah Karidi. There was no chair provided for Shabbesai Tzvi, and he remained standing. “Young man,” said the elder. “Ever since you arrived in Salonika, your conduct has been strange. We realized that you were a holy person, and we chose to look away from many of the things you were doing. We knew of what had occurred in Smyrna, but we made no mention of it. We asked you to give a quiet divorce to Leah Karidi and did not make an issue of the shame you had
brought to the Karidi family. But the spectacle you staged yesterday was too much for us to ignore. You have overstepped the boundaries of decency, and we cannot remain silent. Is there anything you wish to say before I advise you of our decision?” Shabbesai Tzvi stared at the elder with glittering eyes. “I know what you will do, and I do not hold it against you. It is part of the burden I must bear for the good of my people. I will ask the Almighty to forgive you for the pain you will cause me. I have already forgiven you.” “We are grateful for your forgiveness,” replied the elder, a sharp edge of sarcasm in his voice. “And for your kind offer to intercede with the Almighty on our behalf. In the meantime, the elders of Salonika have reached a decision. We have decided to banish you from our city. Go, Shabbesai Tzvi, and do not return.” Two days later, Shabbesai Tzvi boarded a ship, accompanied by Mukian, Yechiel Tomashov, Gamliel Basnoun and several other disciples. The ship sailed out of the Gulf of Salonika and turned northeast for Constantinople. * * * * *
Misty rain hung like a curtain around the seven hills of Constantinople as Shabbesai Tzvi and his
small retinue of followers sailed into the harbor. Shabbesai Tzvi stood under a canopy on the foredeck, staring at the gilded domes and towers of the fabled city, his small Torah scroll clutched tightly in his arms. For a thousand years, Constantinople had been the capital of the Byzantine Empire, the heir and successor to the ancient Roman Empire, which had dominated the world. After the city fell to the Turks in 1453, Sultan Mehmet II had made it the capital of the powerful new Ottoman Empire, which had dominated the world ever since. From here the Turkish sultans had projected their power from North Africa to the Near East and across the Balkans into the heart of the European continent, to the very doorsteps of Austria and Poland. In a sense, Constantinople is at the center of the world, thought Shabbesai Tzvi, and it is quite possible that a change in the destiny of the world must begin from here. He closed his eyes and offered a silent prayer of gratitude to the Almighty for directing his footsteps to the Golden Gate of Constantinople. Word of Shabbesai Tzvi’s bizarre wedding in Salonika and the insistence of the elders on his immediate departure had preceded Shabbesai Tzvi’s arrival in Constantinople, but the story was received with equanimity. Shabbesai Tzvi was not surprised. Constantinople lay at the crossroads of the Empire, its broad avenues and squares athrob with the frenetic vitality of one of the most important cities on earth. Here, the bizarre was commonplace. Here, the outlandish was ordinary. It would take much more to shock the Jewish community of Constantinople than the wedding of Shabbesai Tzvi and the Torah. Those inclined to doubt Shabbesai Tzvi’s authenticity merely greeted the accounts of the incident with snickers and shrugs. Many others took it as a sign that the increasingly famous holy man from Smyrna was on the verge of fulfilling his destiny. Whispered rumors that Shabbesai Tzvi would soon be revealed as Moshiach swept through Constantinople. The shuls in which Shabbesai Tzvi prayed were always filled with those who came to watch the fervor and devotion of this holy man from Smyrna and to hear his heavenly voice. Crowds followed Shabbesai Tzvi wherever he went, eager to catch a glimpse of his shining face, to touch the sleeve of his robes. Mothers brought their little children for his blessings. In the short time since his arrival from Salonika, Shabbesai Tzvi had become the most celebrated man in Constantinople. If his confidence had been at all shaken by his expulsion from Salonika, his reception in Constantinople restored it manifold. One weekday evening during the Maariv prayers, Yechiel Tomashov noticed a very tall man with a long flowing beard come into the shul. The man was obviously an important person, because several people instantly got up and offered him their seats. He remained seated patiently until the prayers were over, his eyes riveted to the swaying figure of Shabbesai Tzvi, surrounded by

his adoring disciples and followers. Immediately after Maariv, the man walked directly to Shabbesai Tzvi. The crowds parted respectfully to let him pass. “Welcome to Constantinople,” said the tall man. He extended his hand. He towered above Shabbesai Tzvi, who was quite tall himself. Shabbesai Tzvi shook the man’s hand. He sat down and indicated the seat across from him. “Please, be seated.” “Thank you,” said the tall man and folded himself down onto the bench. “My name is Avraham Yechini. You are new in Constantinople, so my name probably means nothing to you, but if you stay here long enough, you’re bound to hear of me. I work on old manuscripts.” “What do you do with old manuscripts?” asked Shabbesai Tzvi. “Do you copy them and prepare them for print?” “No, I don’t do that. I work for people who collect precious old manuscripts. If they’re damaged, I restore them to their original state. On occasion, I’m also a preacher.” Gamliel Basnoun leaned over and whispered in Shabbesai Tzvi’s ear, “This man is more than just an occasional preacher, Master. He is a well-known Torah scholar and the most popular and spellbinding speaker in all of Constantinople. It is said that his sermons can make people forget their toothaches.” Shabbesai Tzvi nodded and said nothing. Avraham Yechini could not hear Gamliel, but nonetheless, he knew full well what was being said. His chest swelled with pride. “I should be very interested to hear one of your sermons, Avraham,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “I should be delighted and honored to have you attend. I have heard quite a lot about you, and I’ve been looking forward to meeting you for a long time. Some years ago, I arranged one of my journeys to the Holy Land to include a stopover in Smyrna just to see you.” “I don’t recall your visit,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “Of course you don’t,” said Avraham Yechini. “I arrived in Smyrna shortly after your departure for Greece. I was sorely disappointed not to have met you then, but I knew we would yet meet someday. And that the meeting would
be important.” “How do you mean?” “I know that some people say you are Moshiach and that you will soon put an end to this bitter exile. I don’t know if this belief is based on anything you have said or intimated. I myself have no opinion on this matter. I’m perfectly willing to let events answer this question for me. But of two things I am certain: that you are a holy man sent by the Almighty to teach and inspire our people and that somehow my destiny is intertwined with yours.” “Perhaps it is, Avraham. I regret that we missed each other in Smyrna.” “So do I. I’ve thought about it often. Sometimes I think that had I arrived earlier, I could have helped you fight those shortsighted rabbis of Smyrna.” A wistful smile appeared on Shabbesai Tzvi’s face. “I am grateful for your concern, Avraham,” he said, “but I wouldn’t have let you do anything in my defense. For one thing, Rav Yosef Escapa taught me Torah, and I’ll always love him for it, no matter what he does to me. And I assure you he thought he was doing the right thing. Even more important, it’s my destiny to wander from place to place, scorned and maligned by my own people. It’s meant to cleanse my soul and help me recapture the scattered sparks of holiness. Otherwise, I cannot fulfill my destiny. Whatever that destiny is.” “I see,” said Avraham Yechini, his voice full of sadness and sympathy. “Do not feel sorry for me, Avraham. Rejoice for me. I’m doing what I was meant to do. I’m fulfilling the will of the Almighty. What more can a person ask for? What greater happiness can there be?” “It is easily said but difficult to feel. I’m humbled before you. Perhaps Constantinople will mark the end of your wanderings.” A faraway look appeared on Shabbesai Tzvi’s face. “It is interesting you should say that, Avraham,” he said at last in a dreamlike voice. “When I sailed into the harbor of Constantinople, I had the feeling my wanderings would end here. But somehow it seemed very distant. As if it would still take a long, long time.” To be continued…

Cuomo Agrees to Adopt CDC Recommendations Ditching Mask/ Social Distancing Requirements in Most Situations Several days after saying that the state needed to further study a surprise announcement on masking from the Centers for Disease Control, Governor Andrew Cuomo finally had some good news for New Yorkers this week. Speaking at a Monday press conference, Cuomo said that the state would be adopting the new CDC guidelines, which state that fully vaccinated individuals would no longer need to wear or practice social distancing under most circumstances as of May 19. Masks and social distancing would still be required for everyone in schools, nursing homes and health care settings as well as on buses, trains and airplanes. Businesses have the option of lifting their mask requirements, and large retailers, including Walmart, Costco, Target, CVS, Home Depot, Kohl’s and Trader Joe’s, are all allowing customers to shop without masks, unless required to do so by state or local laws. Those who have yet to be vaccinated are still required to mask up, and the Department of Health is also recommending masks in indoor settings where vaccination status cannot be easily determined. To date, 52% of New Yorkers over the age of eighteen have been fully vaccinated. “New Yorkers have worked hard over the last year to prevent the spread of COVID and keep each other safe,” said Cuomo. “That work has paid off, and we are ecstatic to take this next step in the reopening of our beautiful state. The people of New York and visitors alike should take solace in the lifting of mask requirements, but be respectful of those who may still feel safest wearing their mask in public and business owners who may still ask patrons to don their mask. We are ever closer to our better, safer New York. We are New York tough, and we have proven it.” Not all COVID-19-related rules have been completely eliminated. While fully vaccinated individuals are no longer required to social distance, the six-foot requirement is officially still in place in businesses. Gathering limits for indoor events have risen to 250 people, with 500 allowed outdoors, with a complex structure of requirements in place for larger events. Infection rates in the state have dropped sharply, with the 1.07% seven-day average positivity rate on May 18 the lowest reported since September 27, and it being the 43rd consecutive day of declining COVID-19 cases. Cuomo called on state residents to roll up their sleeves and get their COVID-19 shots, describing it as the only way to “finally reach

that light at the end of the tunnel and get back to life.” But across the state border in New Jersey, mask mandates remain in effect. Politico reported that Governor Phil Murphy has said that he expects masks and social distancing for all to continue for “a couple of more weeks.” Murphy explained that as the only state in the country that hasn’t had to reinstate COVID-19 measures at some point over the last year, he prefers to take a slower approach, noting that the majority of Garden State residents are still unvaccinated and that it would be difficult for any business or entity to determine who is vaccinated and who is not.
Coming Next Fall: Albany’s Revised Private School Curriculum Guidelines The next chapter in the enduring standoff between the New York State Education Department and the yeshivah community will be coming next fall, with updated guidelines to be announced that will, hopefully, take into account the input of private school parents, students, alumni, administrators and public school leaders. A statement released last week by Board of Regents Chancellor Lester Young said that the guidelines are intended to sensitively and respectfully ensure that children are being properly educated in diverse schools throughout the state. “We have an obligation to make sure every child is prepared to be successful in life and be active participants in society, no matter where they attend school,” said Young. Initial guidelines released by the state in December 2018 required yeshivas to devote multiple hours per week to specific secular subjects, but were struck down by a judge in April 2019 on procedural grounds. Hamodia reported that after the guidelines were reinstated four months later, a state-mandated 60-day comment period drew 140,000 responses, nearly 120,000 of which opposed the proposed changes, prompting the Board of Regents to withdraw the guidelines and to agree to meet with stakeholders to better understand the issue at hand. A 49-page report released on May 10 regarding those meetings, which were held on Zoom last December, detailed some of the concerns raised, which included giving schools the ability to uphold their values and refrain from teaching certain subjects that are part of the public school curriculum. It also highlighted the significant parental involvement in the private school decision-making process and the reality that nonpublic schools need to meet the expectations of their tuition-paying parents. of the Agudah and a board member of PEARLS, which advocates for religious liberties in schools — noted that much is at stake as the state debates how to determine the level of secular studies required so that private schools offer an education that is substantially equivalent to that provided in public schools. “We heard some positive things today that give us reason for cautious optimism, but we still have a long way to go,” said Rabbi Zwiebel.
Twelve- to Fifteen-Year Olds Now Approved for Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine After months of waiting and clinical trials that included over 2,200 children, both the FDA and the CDC have given the go-ahead on vaccinating kids ages twelve to fifteen. The Federal Drug Administration amended its emergency use authorization for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine to include those as young as twelve on May 10. The Centers for Disease Control approved the Pfizer vaccine for that age group two days later by a vote of 14 to 0 with one abstention, with director Rochelle Walensky saying that providers should begin vaccinating twelve- to fifteen-yearolds without any further delay.

The change in policy affects 17 million children. A statement released by the CDC said that vaccinating those twelve and up is “another important step to getting out of the COVID-19 pandemic, and closer to normalcy.” President Joe Biden said that his administration is hard at work supplying pediatricians, family doctors, schoolbased clinics and community health centers with vaccines for children, with 15,000 pharmacies ready to vaccinate newly eligible kids. According to NBC News, the vaccinations are an important step in the effort to have middle schools and high schools completely open by next September in addition to curbing the rising COVID-19 hospitalization rates for twelve- to seventeen-year-olds. CNBC reported that Pfizer has 144 children currently enrolled in the first phase of clinical trials testing the vaccine on six- to eleven-year-olds, with four sites in the country running clinical trials on children under five. According to the New York Post, an eight-month-old baby boy from the upstate town of Baldwinsville, New York, is the youngest person in the world to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 after receiving his second dose of the Pfizer shot on May 15. Upstate pediatric infectious disease specialist Dr. Joseph Domachowske said that little Vincenzo Mincolla, the son of two doctors, is one of six babies enrolled in the trial and that he experienced no noticeable side effects from the vaccine.

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO RECAP: Binyamin
is interned in the Acco Prison for two days, before he is released. That same day, the British soldiers track Zelig down and arrest him. Two years later, Binyamin meets up with Zelig’s father in Yerushalayim. It is after the Chevron Massacre and the rioting in Acco, and nearly all of the Jews of Acco have been evacuated from there. Mr. Shikovitzer tells Binyamin his dreams of building a beis midrash on his lot in Acco as a zechus for himself, since his son Zelig, who is in prison, has strayed from Yiddishkeit and will likely not do anything for his father’s soul when he passes on.
Y
itzchak Shikovitzer looked sadly at Binyamin. “Last time I visited Zelig in prison…” “Nu?” “He hardly spoke.” “How come?” “I don’t know.” Shikovitzer sighed. “He’s become very distant, Binyamin. I’m at a loss for ideas of how to reach him.” Binyamin looked down. “If the situation weren’t so dangerous, I would go to him in prison and try to speak to him myself. Did you know that I tried to visit him last summer?” “I know.” Zelig’s father swallowed. He’d never spoken to Binyamin about that visit. “Oh, you knew? I didn’t want to tell you, because I was afraid you’d feel bad that I didn’t get to meet with him. I wanted to speak to him, try to influence him, but after I arrived and waited with all the visitors, someone came from inside to say that Zelig was in the infirmary because of a headache, or something like that. I waited and waited until visiting time was over, and then I had to leave. So I didn’t get to see him.” “Yes,” Shikovitzer said in a low voice. “He told

me. He didn’t want to meet with you.” “He didn’t want…?” “I don’t know if his head was hurting or not, but he told me that you came and that he didn’t want to see you, and that he does not plan to see you if you ever do try to come again.” Binyamin looked at the deep scratches on the tree trunks at his side. “But why is he refusing to see me? What’s he afraid that I’ll do to him?” He chuckled bitterly. “If I would think that I had such a great influence on him, I would have run there ten times since he was arrested, not just once.” “No, Zelig is not afraid of influence.” Shikovitzer looked right and left, and then started to cross the street. “Are you going in this direction anyway, Binyamin, or are you just accompanying me?” “What’s he afraid of?” Binyamin asked again, following Mr. Shikovitzer. “He’s not afraid. He’s angry.” “Angry? At me?” A bit late, Binyamin realized that Zelig’s father had started walking because he didn’t want to face him. “Uh-huh.” “But why?” “He claims you turned him in to the British.” “Me?! I turned him in to the British?!” Binyamin stopped in his tracks, his eyes open wide. “That’s what he says.” Zelig’s father sounded apologetic. “Not that I think he’s right, but you know, it’s in his head.” “Why does he think so?” “I have no idea, Binyamin. I think the only thing he is basing it on is the fact that he was arrested the same morning you were released. He thinks you made a deal with the Brits.” “But how could I have turned him in if I had no idea where he was hiding?” “I don’t know, Binyamin.” Mr. Shikovitzer passed a hand over his forehead. “Please don’t take it to heart. That’s what he decided to think; it’s his choice.” “Right. Still, it’s hard for me to hear that… that this is what he thinks of me.” Binyamin sounded strangled. “I know.” Shikovitzer began walking again, a bit slower than before, and Binyamin, without wanting to, hur-

ried after him. “Is there anything I can do about this?” he asked. “You? Nothing. And I can’t do anything either. Believe me, I’ve tried, Binyamin. He…” Shikovitzer blinked. “His brain is flooded with so many ridiculous ideas; this nonsense is just another one of them.” He spread his hands as if to say, What can we do? The two continued walking together; strangers who passed could have mistaken them for father and son. “Hashem will help,” Binyamin said finally, when they got to the next intersection and he knew he had to turn back. “I… I’ll daven for him, Mr. Shikovitzer.” “Thank you. You really are a good friend, more so than he thinks.” The older man’s eyes were warm. “So now you are here, in Yerushalayim?” “The yeshivah is. My parents moved to Tel Aviv.” “Give your father warm regards when you meet him.” “I will.” Binyamin smiled weakly, and the two parted ways. Had only two years passed since he’d last seen Zelig? How did it feel to Binyamin like it was more like one hundred years?
Acco, 2015 “I moved to a new place yesterday,” Ariella said, returning her chair to its place. Her session had just ended, and she knew she was Sarah’s last client for the day, but for some reason, the therapist remained seated. Ariella couldn’t decide if she was looking at her directly, or right above her. But the gaze was interested and warm — not at all pressuring. “I’m hoping this means a new mazel,” she continued. She didn’t mean “mazel tov” when she said that, but the thought flashed through her mind that she could think of at least three women who would be sure that that was what she meant. They were all well-intentioned, she knew. Still, she liked Sarah’s type of intentions better; the latter merely nodded. When the silence lingered, Sarah asked, in her American accent, “How is this new place?” “Baruch Hashem, it’s very nice. My landlady is a widow, sixty-five years

old, who rents out rooms. I actually thought she was younger at first.” “And is she nice to you?” Sarah asked. “Yes, she really is lovely. She’s quiet, not intimidating. We haven’t really gotten acquainted yet, because I spent most of the time in my room, but from our brief encounter she seems nice.” “What about food?” Ariella hesitated. “She dresses modestly and covers her hair and there are mezuzos in the house. Besides for that? I don’t know exactly. I certainly can’t trust her kashrus level blindly. Actually...” Ariella smiled. “When I first came, she gave me a slice of cake and told me it’s kosher; that she’d bought all ingredients in the supermarket, so she knows it’s one hundred percent kosher.” “So what did you do?” “I explained very gently that I adhere to very strict standards of kashrus, and that I need to see the ingredients of everything that I eat first, to see what it’s made of.” “Was she offended?” Ariella shook her head. “I don’t think so. She just kept smiling and continued talking about the electricity and water and phone line in the house, and anything else I might want to use.” “I’m sure you’re a good tenant.” “I think I am.” Ariella tossed her paper cup into the small trash can and headed for the door. “All I want is some quiet.” “Quiet is very important.” Sarah finally rose and switched off the light in the room. “Yes. It gives me the chance to think a little about myself and my life…” “Is that why you came here?” “One of the reasons.” She was standing in the hallway now. “I have another reason. But now that I’m here, I see how the quiet is so integral, and perhaps even more significant than my decision to come here.” “So let’s go; I’m in favor of strengthening the Acco community! Should I find out if anyone is looking for a kindergarten teacher or something?” “Oh, no!” Ariella recoiled for a moment, but then noticed the teasing smile. “In any case, you’re not a preschool teacher, right?”
“No. Although I did take pedagogy, um…,” she rubbed her ear, “about five years ago. Whoa, it feels like so much longer!” She blinked. “That’s how it is when the years are full, right?” “The older we get, the fuller the years become, and time passes more quickly.” Sarah stepped out. “You’ll see.” “Right now I took a bit of a break, though,” Ariella said. “You’re allowed to go out to recess,” the speech therapist said encouragingly. “But you need to make sure that the bell will ring eventually, if you know what I mean.” “I don’t mind if it doesn’t ring,” Ariella said. “It actually works for me now to be in this older woman’s house; it’s much better than where I was before that. The house itself is new, but all the furniture and stuff is old; lots of antique pictures on the wall… I feel like I fit in beautifully with the ambiance.” “Oh! I love antique things, and I’ve got a number of retro pieces of furniture,” Sara said. “But I’m sorry to tell you that you really don’t look suited to my collection.” She looked at Ariella and shook her head. “No, no and no.” “I guess it’s something more internal.” “That, too, based on my impressions of you, is not very old and dusty, either.” “All right.” Ariella smiled in apparent resignation. “It’s just the way I feel, I guess.” “Well, you can’t argue with emotions, that’s for sure. As long as you like your new place.” “Yes, very much so. Actually, I just saw the landlady stringing all kinds of crystal beads onto some thread, and that is something that has always interested me. I stood and watched her for a few minutes. She didn’t say anything about it — just smiled and motioned for me to come sit next to her, but I couldn’t, because it was just now, before our session.” “Stringing crystal beads? Nice!” Sarah nodded a goodbye to the secretary. “I have a sister who does that as a hobby. Not that she has much time now for hobbies and jewelry, with her house full of little kids, bli ayin hara, but in the past she took an official course to learn how to do it professionally, for

thought our lesson was over, Morah.” “No matter. The homework has two questions; try to think of an answer to at least one of them.” “Okay. What’s the first question?” “Find another connection between you and your new landlady. Besides for the fact that you feel like you’re almost her age. Maybe it is the jewelry thing, which you might convince her to teach you. Or anything else, as long as it is a connection that evokes good feelings within you.” “So our mutual widowhood is not a good answer.” “Not at all.” “I see. Second question?” “Try to pinpoint when you become particularly hoarse. Does it happen when you’re hiding something when you speak, or when there’s a subject that causes you tension, pressure, fear or yearning? You often become extremely hoarse during conversation — you probably noticed that.” “Hiding?” Ariella looked at her, eyes wide in surprise. “What do I have to hide?” “It was just one suggestion from a list of emotions and circumstances that I listed.” “Fine.” Ariella drew out the word. “And I should note that this assignment seems a bit more appropriate, coming from a speech therapist. The first one seems like it would be given by a psychotherapist or something.” “Or just a speech therapist who likes her clients and takes an interest in their lives.” “To help them?” “Only to help them.” “Fine, I’ll think about both of the questions.” They were heading in the same direction, yet Ariella turned to the bus stop going in the other direction. “And thanks a lot.” Ariella walked off, her mind whirring. Had Sarah realized that she was escaping? Yes, it was true that “hiding something” was only one of a list of possibilities that the speech therapist had listed, but… had Osher said something about his oldest sister? Her life? Did Sarah connect Ella Rothman, her new, complex client, to Osher’s Ariella?

parnassah.” “And does she work in that field now?” “Now? Now she works full-time running her house, baruch Hashem. She lives on a small settlement not that far from here, in the middle of a forest. It’s a clean, natural type of place, in the middle of nowhere, with a stream flowing a few yards from their house. They have electricity from some rickety generator that serves all of the residents — about twelve families or so — there’s water from a tank that her husband put on the roof, and believe me, it would be just like her to go out and draw water every day at five in the morning. She loves this kind of thing.” “Wow,” Ariella said. “It sounds like a fascinating life… Where do her kids go to school?” “Don’t think that they are this eccentric, disconnected family. Not at all. Her husband is in a serious kollel in Tzefas, and the children go to school there. She and the little ones are home all day, though. She’s a wonderful mother, and a terrific educator. Last time we spoke, she told me she’s planning to buy a goat so she can learn to make goat’s milk products — goat’s milk is supposedly easier to digest than cow’s milk. I haven’t decided yet if she’s serious or joking,” Sarah added with a laugh, “but regardless, she’s a very industrious type, the opposite of me. But it’s okay. Sisters are allowed to be different.” “Right,” Ariella said, thinking about her younger sisters’ personalities. They were so different from each other, and from her. “What’s the age difference between you?” “More than twenty years, so our different personalities never really bothered me much. I’m the oldest, then there are four boys, and she was the bas zekunim. But let’s go back to you, Ella. Can I give you some homework?” “You can try.” Ariella smiled. “As a girl I often forgot to do my homework. Let’s see how much I’ve improved on that front.” “So I’m giving you a challenge question — actually, two of them. You have to answer one. If you answer them both, you get a higher grade.” “Where, on my report card? I

Years ago, shortly after my marriage, I faced a dilemma. I was pretty close to the rebbetzin of our small town, but it obviously wasn’t a regular “friends” kind of relationship (for one, she was decades older than me!). So when I realized I wouldn’t be able to make it to her daughter’s wedding, I was stumped. I wanted to partake in her simcha, but I had this niggling feeling that sending a photo of myself as shtick for someone to dance with at the wedding was, uh, not exactly the solution. (It was before I had babies, when I still had some sense left in me. I don’t promise to always be this insightful.) My husband came up with the perfect idea. The night before the wedding, we prepared a huge breakfast tray with simple but wholesome foods: salads, dips, cheeses and iced coffee. In the morning, we added fresh rolls and eggs and sent it to their house with a short, warm note. Almost twenty years later, the rebbetzin is still expressing her gratitude — and one comment particularly struck me. She shared, “You know, because I’m the rebbetzin, people often forget that I’m also a hassled and overwhelmed ba’alas simcha, just like anyone else. And you didn’t!” It was a lightbulb moment that has since guided many other interactions I’ve had with so-called “important” people down the line — and it always proves itself.
So, what can you do when you find yourself unable to attend a very close simcha — and want to show the ba’al simcha how much you truly care? Esti is adamant: “Whatever you do, first make that phone call apologizing for your absence… before the simcha!” ‘Nuff said. Food…What Else? Remember the last time someone else prepared a hot meal for you? (I know, it’s been a while.) So you know that food is not only about the food. To be honest, I initially had about 30 stories related to edibles to share. Here’s the abbreviated list of what you can send to nourish both body and soul: • A huge pot of soup for the ba’alas simcha to freeze and feed her family for the entire week. • A large fruit platter that can be used either for the centerpiece or for noshing during the stressed-and-no-food day before the simcha. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, skip this one.) • A tray of cake, already sliced, ready to serve surprise guests and the fresh young couple popping in without notice. (Moishy, never do that again.) • A hot meal sent the week before the simcha, for your exhausted friend who’s coming home after a long day of errands. • Supper for the overseas guests arriving two days before the wedding to take one load off the baalas simcha’s shoulders. • A voucher for a meal at a restaurant for the ba’alei simcha (provided they don’t also serve schnitzel and rice).

Rochele recalls feeling torn. “A really good friend was making bar mitzvah during the height of the lockdowns, and there was no way for me to travel to her hometown. I worked really hard to prepare a stunning cake and penned a truly heartfelt note. “My hand was already reaching for the phone to call the delivery man when the realization hit. We were both working on our diets together, owning up to each other every night. She knew that I knew how hard she was working not to eat this stuff. And now I was going to send a ten-inch-high temptation to her kitchen! Was that fair? I didn’t know. It seemed cruel. But I so wanted to partake in the simcha, and this was the only way at that point!” So I hired Pessy Reich, ex-spy for the USSR and current adviser to the Mossad to find out what happened. (Okay, not really. She’s my sister who has a great relationship with this friend. Close enough.) She reported back from the “other side”:
Nechama: “The note. She forgot about the note. Her thoughtful words made the temptation so worth it. “I mean, really, my home was already flooded with cakes and cookies and mousse cups and candy… If I was done for, it wasn’t because of her cake! “I was touched beyond words, and that’s the truth. (Would I have preferred a vegetable platter? Probably. But that’s just because we were all sick from a sugar overdose the next day.) Really, the only thought that was going through my mind when I received that beautiful cake was, Wow! I can’t believe she made that for me!”

All-Out I know this may come as a surprise, but it doesn’t have to be about food. Henny shares: “I know it sounds crazy, but when we couldn’t partake in our friends’ simcha overseas, we sent them a choir to perform at the wedding. This was 40 years ago, however.” Assuming most of us are not going to start searching for Benny Friedman’s contact info now, here are a number of other ideas — of all kinds: • One aunt commissioned a song for the new couple. (Note: This isn’t the time to add a line about the time little Tzirele fell asleep in the Toys ‘R Us castle bed.) • Can’t sing? (Or think you can, but others are looking frightened at the suggestion?) Pen a letter extolling the chasan’s virtues to his new kallah, and sending the kind of brachos that only a loving relative can. • Help! No, really. Take the baalei simcha’s kids out to give them a breather. And do their homework with them while you’re at it. If you’re that guest from overseas with time on your hands, see which errands you can take off the ba’alas simcha’s hands. Do you drive? Offer to do some pick-ups and drop-offs. • A few people mentioned slideshows and photos, some with an added twist: One took shots during highlights of the wedding, and put them together in a slideshow for the sheva brachos so the couple had them immediately. Another did the same with photos, printing them out for the first sheva brachos.
It’s the Little Things Most of us like Belgian chocolates and appreciate a heartfelt tefillah. Sometimes a small gesture, even when you are not in a position to send something or physically help, can be extremely meaningful to the ba’alei simcha. Some ways to show meaningful long-distance participation: • Call before the simcha to inform them that you and your children are currently saying Tehillim for their success. • Call during the simcha to say, “Mazel tov, we’re celebrating with you right now!” if you cannot physically attend. • Call after the simcha to describe how you got dressed, had a little l’chaim, said some Tehillim during the chuppah, and then turned on music and danced with the kids.
Who’s This About? As in every other area in life, we can easily go wrong if we don’t ask ourselves a very fundamental question: “Who’s this about?” Is it “I want to participate in her simcha?” or “I want to participate in her simcha?” Big difference. Because if it’s about me, I’ll send photos of myself and take over half the dancing time, I’ll hijack the kallah for a ten-minute phone rendition of how terribly sorry I am to have missed the wedding, and I’ll pop over to “be there for them” on the night before the simcha without first checking if they may perhaps prefer their privacy. When participation is about the ba’alas simcha and connecting to her joy, we will be far more tuned in to her needs. If it’s not about us enjoying the feeling of being solicitous, or “in the thick of things,” or projecting our own disappointment, we’d ask (or intuit if it’s someone we are close enough to): What would make her happy? And that answer might be very different from what we ourselves might have chosen.

Uncertain Future for Camp Hikon by Naftali Schwartz Last week Camp Hikon achieved international notoriety through being smeared by NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo for “discriminating against vaccinated individuals”. This was very gratifying for us, since it highlighted the national hypocrisy whereby it’s OK for colleges across the country to discriminate against unvaccinated students in the fall, but it’s not OK for camps to cautiously “discriminate” and keep vaccinated counselors and campers away from vulnerable unvaccinated campers. Gratifying, yes, but also terrifying. How to reconcile a non-negotiable opening day coming up in 6 weeks with the abrupt political exile of Camp Hikon from NYS? If you think it might be a good idea to just call the whole thing off and try again next year, consider that not opening this season would send precisely the wrong message. It would tell the world that there’s not a whole lot you can do when things go badly. If we allow ourselves the luxury of becoming victims of our own circumstances, we lose all credibility to set ourselves up as teachers of the youth in navigating future crises. Let’s face it, if we can’t get through this one, we may as well just close our doors for good. So, yes, we will be opening this summer. But how to make it work? If no more than a few dozen campers were expected, we might be able to rent a farm with a large farmhouse. But the reality is that we’ll be hosting perhaps 100 boys and 100 girls plus ample support staff. It’s improbable any campsite with sufficient housing could be found. Obviously, we’re going to have to build a campsite from scratch. First, we’ll need a roomy parcel of partially forested land in a town with weak zoning regulations. Then we’ll have to install one or two pools. A fleet of RVs or temporary bungalows or tiny houses can serve as bunkhouses. Public buildings like a shul, dining hall and gymnasium are a little more complicated, but still manageable. What about plumbing? We’ll have washing water piped into bunkhouses, but we’ll sidestep the complexity and expense and delay of a full septic system by adopting composting toilets. (Incidentally, if you’ve never seen a Kibbutz Lotan composting toilet, you’ve never seen a composting toilet at all.) What about heat and hot water? Wood-burning stoves. Electricity? In the summer months we won’t be using a whole lot, so a little solar or wind should be sufficient. Setting up a campsite from scratch certainly seems overwhelming, but when you break it up into manageable parts, it doesn’t seem nearly so daunting. We have to believe that Hashem challenges us because He loves us. R. Avigdor Miller used to say that although we’re obligated to cry out to Hashem in need, this is not enough. We must also think our problems through and make an effort to arrive at reasonable solutions. And then we’ll truly receive Hashem’s blessing.
CAMP HIKON
is being established this summer to meet all of these goals.

Recently married? New to the kitchen? Join our dinner cooking contest! We hereby invite all young housewives out there to participate in a program where each contestant will emerge a true winner — with some new culinary skills under their apron. No matter how delicious, upscale and gourmet the meals you’ve been served by your mother, mother-inlaw, sister or [fill in the blank], they can’t compete with the dinner that you, the new wife, painstakingly prepared from scratch. The satisfaction that comes along with this labor of love tastes so much better than the greatest balabusta’s dishes. When a yungerman comes home after a full, tiring day and opens the door to a homey, welcoming aroma, and the sight of a table set with a meal prepared especially for him, it satiates him on a whole different level. So tie those apron strings, get the pots out — and get ready for the compliments.

SIMPLE SOUP This recipe yields six portions (three meals). After serving, divide the remaining soup between two 1-quart containers to use at a later time.
INGREDIENTS 2 medium-size onions 2 cloves garlic 1½ T. oil 1 package Capri Blend frozen vegetables 6½ cups water 1½ T. kosher salt, or 1 T. regular salt ¼ tsp. white pepper
DIRECTIONS 1. Peel and chop the onions and garlic cloves. 2. Place the oil in a 4-quart pot. Turn the flame on medium-high. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and saute for about 10 minutes. 3. Rinse the frozen vegetables. Add them to the pot together with the water, salt and pepper. 4. Cook for 40 minutes. Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until it is smooth.
BATTER-FRIED CUTLETS
MASHED POTATOES
This recipe is for a tray of four cutlets. Enjoy two for dinner, and freeze the remaining cutlets, well-wrapped, in a foil pan for another night. When serving, reheat the cutlets in the oven at 350° until thoroughly warmed.
This is a super shortcut for preparing mashed potatoes: Cook the potatoes with the soup above, and there will be no need to use a separate pot!
INGREDIENTS 4 chicken cutlets Oil, for frying Marinade 2 tsp. honey 1 tsp. mustard 1 clove garlic, crushed (or a frozen garlic cube) ½ tsp. salt
Prepare the marinade befo re you leave in th e morning , and compl ete the remaining ste ps when you get home.
Batter 1 cup flour 2 eggs ⅔ cups water 2 T. oil 2 tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt 1 cup Rice Krispies (optional)
DIRECTIONS 1. Cut each cutlet into 4 long strips. Place the marinade ingredients in a bag, then add the cutlets. The cutlets should marinate for between 1 and 8 hours. 2. Combine all batter ingredients in a bowl and place the Rice Krispies (if using) in a flat plate. Line a plate with paper towel sheets. 3. Pour the oil into the pan, covering the bottom of the frying pan with a generous amount of oil. Turn the flame to medium-high. Wait about two minutes for the oil to get hot. (You can test it by spritzing in one droplet of water; if it moves across the pan, the oil is hot enough.) 4. Remove the cutlets from the marinade. Dip them into the batter, one at a time, making sure each cutlet gets well and fully covered. 5. Dip the cutlets into the Rice Krispies, if using. 6. Place the dipped cutlets into the pan. Fry until the bottom is golden, about 5 to 7 minutes. Using a spatula, flip the cutlets and fry for another 7 minutes. 7. Remove the cutlets onto the prepared plate, and let the paper towel absorb the extra oil.
INGREDIENTS Two large potatoes 2 T. oil or mayonnaise Salt, to taste
DIRECTIONS 1. Peel two potatoes, and cut them into cubes. 2. Place the potatoes in a mesh bag and tie with a knot. Put the bag into the soup along with the water. Cook for 40 minutes. 3. Remove the mesh bag from the soup with a fork. Pour the potatoes into a 9-inch plate and mash them with a fork. Add oil or mayonnaise and salt, and mix.
ROASTED PEPPERS INGREDIENTS 8 mini peppers ⅛ tsp. salt ½ T. oil
DIRECTIONS 1. Wash peppers. Using a sharp knife, make a slit on the flatter side of the pepper, and open it slightly to make sure it’s wormfree. 2. Line a 9x13” pan with parchment paper. 3. Lay the peppers, cut-side down, in the pan. 4. Turn the oven to low broil (or 550°). Bake for 10 minutes.

כשר לפסח למהדרין IMPOTRETED BY
The date is all scribbled up with happy markings on the calendar, and the piles of bags and scores of purchases are threatening to overtake our home. My wedding day is drawing closer, and every particle in our house knows it. The little preschoolers I work with know it too. I’m an assistant teacher of a class of adorable little girls, one cuter than the next, and the prospect of a teacher’s wedding — they’ll be in Shabbos clothing! I’ll be in a white gown! — is huge. As the weeks go by, some to-do lists shrink and disappear, while others grow and stretch nearly to infinity. But as the countdown becomes serious, so does another thing: our apartment hunt. My parents live in a lovely neighborhood — of course it’s lovely; to me it’s home — and I am on the lookout for something small and appealing in the area. We carefully pore through the classifieds each week and ask our neighbors for leads, but it seems all starter apartments in the neighborhood are currently inhabited by families who don’t seem to be leaving anytime soon. Now, my parents and I are certain that Hashem has an apartment for us somewhere, only we don’t know where it is yet. But as the weeks slip by, we can’t help but get a tiny bit worried. Because another thing we don’t know is that it would be a pint-sized shaliach, with a tumble of blond hair and the cutest laugh, who will soon lead us in the right direction... Besides my classroom duties, my job also finds me on the school bus each morning, greeting my little charges as they board. Now, as the wedding draws closer, I begin looking at the houses along the route with a different sort of eye. Every morning, as the bus completes its route, my eyes are drawn to the streets that I consider to be a prime location. It’s almost like going for a viewing each day anew, only I don’t know where to look! Suddenly I’m noticing how many doors could potentially be apartments, I’m considering how far from my parents’ house I’d be willing to go, and I’m keeping my eyes open for any sign of a vacancy. What that would look like, I don’t know. Perhaps a moving truck in a driveway? Finally, Hashem prods my messenger forward with very exciting news, but it gets lost among all sorts of exciting updates and exclamations at first. “Morah, I got new shoes! Here, see?” There’s a foot in front of my face. “Morah! Morah! My brother’s tooth fell out!” “Morah, do you know that my neighbor has the same dress as Esti? Look!” And Esti is being dragged along so I can look. “See the dress? See?” “Morah, we’re moving! We’re gonna go to a new house, and I’m gonna have a new room!”
“Morah, here! I have a mitzvah note!” Suddenly, one girl’s news stands out from the others, and I whip my head back to look at her again. Did I hear right? “Shifra, you said you’re moving?” There’s a flash of hope in my heart. Was this possible? I knew where she lived — I picked her up every morning! — and they were a pretty young family. If this was still her parents’ first apartment, then… Her bun wobbles as she nods. “Yes, we’re moving to a bigger house!” I smile brightly at the child, who must wonder why I am so struck by her news. Okay, so I wasn’t going to get too excited right now, but a girl’s allowed to hope, right? As soon as I get home in the afternoon, I make the call. Mrs. Dolman thinks I’m calling about her Shifra, at first, and I reassure her that everything’s okay and that her daughter is doing wonderfully. Then I tell her why I’m calling, and reassure her once again, this time to tell her that, no, I don’t hear about everything that goes on at home, only about truly momentous news — which this absolutely is! Mrs. Dolman laughs. “Yes, Shifra’s really excited. And about this apartment, we have two bedrooms here” — check! — “and we’re moving out in a month,
Okay, so I wasn’t going to get too excited right now, but a girl’s allowed to hope, right? b’ezras Hashem.” Check, check! “That sounds perfect,” I say. I’m almost afraid to hope. It’s almost too perfect. “ I don’t think my landlords have found a new tenant yet,” Mrs. Dolman continues. “I can easily find out.” She makes a call, I whisper a kapitel Tehillim, and then the phone rings. It’s Mrs. Dolman again, and she confirms that, no, her landlords haven’t found a tenant yet. My heart catches. Yes! We can come look at the apartment tonight, Mrs. Dolman continues, but in my heart, I’m certain. This is the apartment that is meant to be ours. And, indeed, soon the Dolmans move out, and our piles of bags and scores of purchases move in. Then the furniture is delivered, and the housewares, and slowly, slowly, I watch as this perfect little space turns into a home. And not just any home. It’ll be our home, and may it be filled with light.

Suppliance of appliances While landlords used to outfit rental apartments with some appliances, as the years go by, the trend is becoming rarer and is by now almost extinct. Over the years, the most common appliance included in an apartment was a fleishig stove, followed by a milchig stove. Next in range were refrigerators, and washer/dryers were the least common to be provided by landlords.
