A fitful sleep is just one part of the picture. Way before the thread count and wall art, rows of swatches display a myriad of color, texture and price tiers. (Re: Out of the Iron Curtain, Issue 259) I save The Monsey View to read on Motzei Shabbos, and even though it’s too late to make it to your Boggle deadline by then, I really do enjoy the word puzzle. When I do find the time, I play just for my own enjoyment. I have also clipped articles from many of your issues. I look out for the “Housekeeping Tips” by Bright Shine Cleaners, and I really enjoy every article by Ruchy Reese. This week’s coverage of the Skulener Rebbes, zt”l, was really masterfully done. I am also following the serial The Cuckoo Clock and wait to read each new chapter. I’m sure a really special and emotional ending is awaiting us. M.M.
REPORT THE WRONGS (Re: Your Voice, Issue 259) After reading the frightening letter detailing the experience one woman had with her cleaning help, I’d like to urge the letter-writer or anyone experiencing a similar story not to keep quiet. three meals in one given day. But while I fry (everything), heat frozen goodies, and make pizzas aplenty, I have never tried “real cooking” in it. That is until I saw Chana Rivky Spitzer’s idea for cooking an entire delicious meal in the machine. The Grilled Salmon Dinner was a winner. So tasty, and so simple to prepare. I had the meal ready in less than a half-hour, and how delicious it all was! There was also another great bonus: I serve supper in two shifts, and this setup of cooking it all at once works perfectly for having a fresh, hot meal ready for each member of the family when they’re ready to eat. Thank you for the wonderful idea! D.G.

RESERVED FOR THE GUESTS OF HONOR My son came home excitedly, waving a bright neon paper stating that his chumash siyum will be taking place shortly. I smiled and shared his excitement while trying to stifle the bittersweet feelings that it triggered
in my subconsciousness. Time and again, after returning home from my older boys’ chumash siyum, I made a firm resolution to speak up and not allow a repeat performance. So here I am, fulfilling that promise in the hope that my letter will bring some much-needed awareness. Melamdim invest so much time and so many kochos in preparing the boys for this special day. The boys, for their part, sit on stage proudly, performing before an admiring crowd of parents and grandparents. But many of these mothers and grandmothers are craning their necks from the third or fourth row, trying to catch a glimpse of their little boy. Who occupies the front row? At times it’s a mother who was super efficient and arrived extra early, camera in hand, and proceeded to sit her matching little girls up front near her. Other times it’s an exuberant older sister who was appointed unofficial photographer that is occupying the front-row seat. After all, how else is she expected to get good shots? I do not know the history of every single girl occupying the front row, but I do know that the bubbies belong to sit there and enjoy the nachas, instead of straining to see from too far back. I’m hoping my words will bring about a much-needed change. C.S. EDITORS’ BULLETIN:

Ben Azai omer, “Hevei ratz l’mitzvah kalah, u’vore’ach min ha’aveirah, shemitzvah goreres mitzvah va’aveirah goreres aveirah… — You should run to a small mitzvah and run away from an aveirah; because a mitzvah leads to another mitzvah while an aveirah leads to an aveirah.” Ben Azai tells us to run to do a mitzvah. Isn’t it enough to walk? Ben Azai’s name, by which he was called, was actually Shimon. Why does the mishnah call him the “son of Azai” and not Shimon or Shimon ben Azai? The Gemara says that, quite simply, he was so immersed in his learning that he never had a spare minute to actually get tested and acquire semicha; and calling him Shimon alone, without a rabbinic title, would not be respectful for a tannai of his caliber. In the same vein, ben Azai never got married. When his talmidim asked him for an explanation, he said, “What can I do? I have such a strong cheshek to learn that I just can’t leave learning for a minute.” Reb Leibel Eiger, a grandson of Reb Akiva Eiger, was drawn to chassidus and became a Kotzker chassid. His father, Reb Shlomo Eiger, who was of a rabbinical lineage of misnagdim, was very upset, and he asked his father Reb Akiva what to do. “Check how he washes netilas yadayim,” said Reb Akiva. “If he’s not makpid in
80 / THE MONSEY VIEW
halacha, you’ll know he’s not headed in the right direction, whereas if he is makpid, you’ll know his yearning for chassidus is out of genuine ehrlichkeit.” Reb Shlomo checked, and indeed, his son washed his hands with every chumrah, so he reported back to his father. “If that’s the case,” advised Reb Akiva, “be accepting of his choice.” When his father was niftar, Reb Leibel became Rebbe and developed a large following of talmidim. Once, a traveling comedy of assimilated Yidden passed through the towns to enact to the townsfolk a comedy of their rabbanim. When they passed through Lublin where Reb Leibel presided as Rebbe, they decided to watch him during kabbalas Shabbos to see how to turn him into the subject of their ridicule. They arrived in the middle of Lecha Dodi to see Reb Leibel davening with great hislahavas. They were rooted to the spot. Then, when Reb Leibel reached the words “hisoireru, hisoireru,” his voice reached an otherworldly, lofty crescendo that made the very walls shake. The intensity of it penetrated the comedians and, trembling, they fled, telling their band outside, “We can make fun of people, but we’re not starting up with malachim!” With this story in mind, we can understand the answer Reb Akiva once gave to his grandson Reb Leibel, whom he loved despite their different leanings: According to ben Azai, the only way it’s assur min haTorah to carry in a public place on Shabbos is if one actually jumps four whole amos at a time while carrying. If one walks, he believed, carrying is not assur. The Gemara says that the reason one may not shake daled minim on Shabbos, even at home, is because of the chance he might take it out and carry it four amos on Shabbos. So Reb Leibel asked his zeide, “According to ben Azai, the issur of carrying only applies if one jumps four amos. How many people jump four amos at a time that Chazal had to make a gezeirah against it?” Reb Akiva answered, “Lately, since you became a chassid, I see with what a bren you perform mitzvos that I have no doubt that you would jump four amos at a time to do a mitzvah and, chalilah, might inadvertently transgress the halacha. Ben Azai himself had this same middah of zerizus with mitzvos, so based on his style, the Gemara makes sense.” The mishnah continues, giving the reason to run to a mitzvah and flee from an aveirah. Why does it repeat itself, first saying “mitzvah goreres mitzvah” and then “schar mitzvah mitzvah” — first that a mitzvah leads to another mitzvah, and then that the reward for a mitzvah is a mitzvah? Sometimes a person does something that falls in a gray area; he’s not sure if what he did constituted doing a mitzvah or an aveirah. Meforshim say that one can know the answer after doing the deed: If it filled the person
with satisfaction and positive feelings, and it led to another mitzvah, one can know that what he’d done earlier was a mitzvah, and vice versa. Similarly, Reb Mechel of Zlotchov said that when a person does a mitzvah, he earns himself a good malach, and the malach helps him earn more mitzvos, while a bad malach earned through an aveirah draws near other sinful opportunities. There is a famous story told of the chanukas habayis of Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin. The Chortkover Rebbe, who was at the stone-laying, turned to the main donor of the building and said, “I don’t envy your mitzvah of donating the money toward the building, because for that you’re getting all the pomp and honor. I envy the mitzvah you had done that merited you the zechus to do this mitzvah.” When the daughters of Yisro told him that Moshe Rabbeinu saved them from the shepherds, they referred to him as “ish mitzri.” But Moshe Rabbeinu wasn’t a mitzri! What is the meaning of this reference? The Midrash clarifies this by saying that a snake was once chasing someone, so the man ran away and jumped into the river. While jumping into the river, he noticed a young boy drowning. He quickly saved the boy, who couldn’t thank him enough and exclaimed, “If not for you, I would’ve died.” Said the man, “If not for the snake that chased me into the water you would’ve died.” Similarly, when Moshe killed a mitzri, he wasn’t sure if he’d done the right thing or not. But being that it led to him saving his own future wife, Tziporah, he then knew that the killing of the mitzri was the right choice. Reb Yissachar Dov of Cheshinov married the daughter of Reb Shiale Belzer. The Shinover Rav, the chasan’s grandfather, was at the chasunah, so he and Reb Shiale Belzer hosted the Shabbos sheva brachos. In the middle of the Rebbe’s fiery divrei Torah, there was a push to hear his every word, and a candle fell over and was extinguished. After he finished his divrei Torah, the Shinover Rav told the crowd, “A person does something, and he isn’t always sure if what he did was right or wrong, but if something bad results from it, he knows he did something wrong. Sometimes you push closer to hear a Rebbe’s Torah. I don’t know if you push because you genuinely want to hear, or if it is to make a matzav, but seeing that a candle was put out on Shabbos through your pushing shows that it wasn’t a good thing.” Yitzchok of Radvill asked: Every Yid wakes up in the morning and launches into a slew of mitzvos — modeh ani, negel vasser, davening. If we start with mitzvos, shouldn’t we follow the guarantee of “mitzvah goreres mitzvah”? How come Yidden commit aveiros despite this? He cites the Bartenura who says that goreres means “crave”; when we do mitzvos, we should derive such enjoyment and satisfaction from it that we should crave more. Only on such a level will we be guaranteed that a mitzvah will follow a mitzvah.
“I envy the mitzvah you had done that merited you the zechus to do this mitzvah.”

Citing Coronavirus Concerns, AntiKapparos Crusade Begins Anew A group that lost a legal bid to halt the use of live chickens as kapparos two years ago is once again calling for an end to the practice, charging that it poses a potential threat to public safety. NY1 reported that attorney Nora Marino filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Alliance to End Chickens as Kaporos in Manhattan Supreme Court in the hope of renewing her 2018 case and forcing the NYPD to enforce public health codes that ban the slaughter of live chickens. While investigators have yet to determine exactly when and how the coronavirus originated, Marino’s lawsuit draws on the unproven premise that the virus began in the wet markets of the Chinese city of Wuhan and argues that kapparos present a similar risk of disease. “It’s not about what could happen,” argued Marino. “It’s about what has happened because of a live animal wet market.” Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein disagreed with Marino’s argument that kapparos are unsanitary, noting that while the practice is more humane than factory slaughter, it has drawn more media scrutiny than other types of animal slaughter because it takes place in public. Albert Einstein College of Medicine Department of Microbiology and Immunology’s Dr. Stephen Baum said that while he believes that live markets present a major health risk, he doesn’t feel that kapparos are dangerous. Still, Baum said that exposure to live chickens is best avoided and that he doubts that lawsuits will spell the end of kapparos, a custom that has been in practice for generations. “The intersection where religion and health meet is a

busy and dangerous one,” observed Baum, who recalled his own grandmother coming home from live animal markets with a headless chicken. Having proposed legislation in the state Senate last spring to temporarily shut any markets where live animals are slaughtered until potential risk factors can be studied, Senator Luis Sepulveda expressed concern about the safety of kapparos. Sepulveda, whose district includes portions of the Bronx, said that he believes that the state has the right to stop a religious practice in the interests of preserving public health. “When you take into consideration the crisis the country is in now, we need to protect all communities,” said Sepulveda. “We need to make sure the Jewish community is protected.” While Marino knows that she may be fighting an uphill battle, she has no intention of backing down. “We can’t look at this with the same eyes anymore,” said Marino. “We’re post-COVID.”
Viznitz Yeshiva Confirmed as Nyack College Buyer After weeks of speculation, South Nyack Mayor Bonnie Christian has identified the Viznitz Yeshiva as the buyer of the 22-acre Nyack College property located just minutes from the Hudson River. The Journal News reported that the yeshivah is scheduled to close on the property in August. While Christian has said that the property will house a religious school, few details have emerged so far on any other potential uses of the land. The village has asked attorneys for the yeshivah to submit a written narrative with details of its proposed use as well as a site plan, which will be shared with the public. It is unclear if the yeshivah is buying the college in partnership with developers who might want to build homes on the site. As the site of a religious school, the parcel could retain the tax exempt status it enjoyed when it operated as a college, and Christian has been criticized for not finding a buyer that would have put the property on the village’s tax rolls. “As we have maintained from the inception of the announcement of the college’s intention to sell its campus, the college alone has the discretion to choose to whom it sells its campus,” said Christian. “Any questions regarding the college’s decision should be directed to the college.”

After his employee Leonid fails to find out any new information regarding Gustav’s or Edo’s backgrounds, Joe Ludmir is dismayed to hear that someone is inquiring into Alex Korman’s donation for the Potolskys’ daughter’s wedding. In 1949, Gershon visits Gustav’s orphanage. The director tells them that they have no idea what Gustav’s real name is, or anything else about him, but that he is sick in the hospital and keeps muttering the name “Yosef Ludmir” and a certain address in Bratislava. Gershon visits the boy and is convinced that he is his brother Ernie’s son. “I’m having lots of different feelings, Tatty.” Elisheva tasted the soup, nodded to herself, and rinsed the spoon. They’d just been to the orthopedist together, and her father was now sitting at her kitchen table. “When this good fortune began to smile on us, I was very surprised. I was happy, of course, and I thanked Hashem, and that was it. Then I began to suspect that something was going on, and after that I assured myself that I was just being suspicious. But then, after a day or two, I decided that my suspicions were actually very well founded. And I started to feel frustrated and annoyed that someone was playing around with us like this. Then I decided to look at the whole thing as just very funny.” She served her father a bowl of soup, with minimal salt as per his diet. “So what do you think, Tatty?” “It’s always good to laugh,” he said hoarsely. “It took me time to learn… Thanks for the soup.” “You, Tatty? Learned to laugh?” When had her father last laughed?
“No?” He was surprised at her answer. She was quiet for a minute, thinking. “A bit,” she admitted. Her father was not, and had never been, very talkative. He certainly did not have a highly developed sense of humor. But… yes… he was almost always in good spirits. He was perpetually optimistic, and, come to think of it, he certainly had a very distinct laugh, which they heard whenever he allowed it to emerge. It was like a short, endearing burst of laughter, and even the children liked to imitate it. “I began my life at the end of the war, you know,” he said suddenly. “I hardly remember what was before that.” “During the war you were in a dormitory or something, right?” She knew so little about her father! And that was a lot compared to what he knew about his father. Or his mother. Or about himself. Nothing, and more of nothing. “Yes. It was actually a Catholic orphanage. I had a friend there. A Jewish boy.” He breathed deeply. “The only oth-

er Jew besides me. We were smuggled out together.” “To Janek and Ulush Cohen’s house?” “Yes.” He turned the spoon over in the bowl, like a child refusing to eat. “Then we got separated.” “When?” “A short time after they took us out of the orphanage. We each came to Eretz Yisroel alone.” Elisheva nodded, treasuring these rare moments when her father, of his own accord, just sat and spoke, without her having to extract every detail and every word from him. “And for me he was… the only one from the past.” “Was he a relative?” “I don’t think so.” He took a few spoonfuls of soup before he continued, “But he was my link to the past. When he left, I was just…” He paused, and then surprised her with a metaphor which, although clichéd, was very apt: “Like a leaf without roots.” “So why didn’t you try to meet? To keep up with each other?” Elisheva looked at her father, who had risen to put his bowl in the sink. She ignored the incessant ringing of both her house phone and her cell phone. He didn’t respond; he just sat back down to make a bracha acharonah. “I thought he wouldn’t want to,” he said heavily, when he finished. “But maybe I made a mistake about that.” “And you never traced any roots.” “No. You know that.” He raised his head as though he wanted to tell her something else, and then lowered it again, apparently regretting it. And then he added in a low voice, “But my rebbi taught me to be happy this way, too. Because when a Jew does what he has to do, it doesn’t matter through which branch he draws his strength.” “Because we’re connected to the ground this way, too.” She nodded, familiar with this idea, and then asked, “This metaphor, that the branch doesn’t really matter, also comes from your rebbi?” “No. Mommy, aleha hashalom, told that to me.” “It’s nice.” “Your mother was good with words like that.” And with that remark, a smile — and even a short laugh — he
ended the conversation. He went into the little room, which would become his own private suite whenever he decided to officially move in with them, and Elisheva was able to check her phone. “I have news that is more urgent than urgent!” That was one of the four messages that Blumi had left her, after three calls that had not been answered. “Get back to me right away, Elisheva!” Elisheva went over to the vegetable drawer to get potatoes to cook up for mashed potatoes, calling Blumi as she went. “Finally!” “What’s doing, Blumi?” “Baruch Hashem, baruch Hashem. Listen, they got back to me from the private investigator’s office. Did I tell you two days ago that I contacted them?” “No. A private investigator? I didn’t mean for you to invest so much in this, Blumi.” “Don’t worry about it. It’s chump change for me. I also didn’t ask for any serious investigation or surveillance, just for some answers to a few of my questions.” “Which questions?” “First question: Exactly how lucid was Alexander Korman in his last year of life? Second question: Were his deceased parents really named Peretz and Tziporah Genendel? And third question: Were they killed in the war?” Had the potatoes she was holding been cooked, they would have long been turned to mush between Elisheva’s fingers. “Nu?!” “First answer: Not at all. Second answer: Not at all. Third answer: Not at all.” Magdiel, Eretz Yisroel, 1949 Batya returned to Magdiel alone. Gershon returned four days later, together with the boy. He had remained at the feverish boy’s bedside for three days. During the day Gershon had paced around the room; on rare occasions he’d gone into the hospital courtyard to smoke, and at night he’d dozed on the chair near the bed. On the third morning, the boy’s fever finally went down, the coughing eased, and toward lunch-

time, his eyes began following Gershon as the latter paced around the room while keeping a close eye on the bed in the corner. “You are not Janek…” the boy said in a hoarse voice, when Gershon returned to him. “Janek?” Gershon pulled back the wooden chair that served him faithfully day and night. “Who is Janek?” “The man from Bratislava…” “Are you from there?” The boy did not react. He closed his eyes again. “Sir, are you from the orphanage?” A short male nurse entered the room. “The boy is being released tomorrow morning. Please tell the management that he needs good food and rest, and make sure that he gets it. Will you be able to give him a quiet room and some good care until he recovers completely? He came back pretty fast after last time.” “I’m not from the orphanage.” Gershon stroked the boy’s cool forehead. “And I have no idea what they can do. But it is possible that I will be able to arrange a quiet room and good care for him. I need to speak to the director there about it.” He sat down on the chair and leaned forward. His fingers played with the edge of the boy’s blanket. The child — Yosef? — stared back at him. He wasn’t totally focused, but there was some alertness and interest in his gaze. The nurse left the room, and Gershon shifted on the chair, rocking back and forth, humming quietly. Did Ernie, Hashem yinkam damo, also sing their father’s Kah Ribbon? No reaction. The boy had closed his eyes again. What do you want? he chastised himself. Even if Ernie sang this song at home, and even if this Yosef really is his child, he was too young to remember the tune. True, music is something that penetrates very deeply, but if the boy was born in the middle of the war, which is likely, his father probably did not have
time to sit and sing to him. Nothing more happened that day; the boy did not make any sign that the tune was familiar, nor did he offer any more information. But by the next day, Gershon had obtained permission from the orphanage to take the boy home with him, and the two set out for the house in Magdiel. “I couldn’t leave him there,” Gershon told Batya late that night, when the boy was safely ensconced in a soft, warm bed. Gershon had spread two thick woolen blankets on the wide wooden bench for himself. “And in the hospital they warned me not to burden him with anything that could slow his recovery. So I haven’t asked him anything yet, but —” He tugged at his left ear. “He’s a sweet boy who’s so alone… whether he is Ernie’s son or not. And my heart tells me that he is.” Batya nodded. She didn’t point
accurately, your family.” “My family?” Gershon’s breaths became rapid. “Maybe… maybe your father.” He sat up at once. “My father? Where do you know him from?” “Maybe we’ll talk about it tomorrow. You should rest a bit more now…” “No. Not tomorrow.” The boy reclined again. “Please, tell me now.” Gershon sat down on the edge of the bed and held the pale, thin hand in his own. “My name is Gershon Ludmir,” he said quietly, acutely aware that it might be better to do this in another day or two. But he just could not wait. And the boy, apparently, couldn’t either. “Ludmir!” The boy’s eyes grew round. He stared at Gershon, and suddenly burst into tears. “Your name is Ludmir…” He gasped. “That’s why you said you know me? And… how did you know to come to the hospital?” “Because you said…” Gershon whispered, noticing out of the corner of his eye that Batya was peeking into the room, “...you said, ‘Yosef Ludmir.’ Do you remember?” The boy didn’t react. He just sat there, sobbing hysterically. Slowly his weeping began to subside, until suddenly, he became totally silent and put his head back on the pillow. He lay with his eyes closed and breathed deeply, as though he had fallen asleep. “Are you all right?” Gershon asked, stroking the child’s cheek with his finger. The boy didn’t move. He just opened his eyes for a minute and then closed them again. “Ludmir,” he said. “Do you know Yosef Ludmir?” Gershon softly pressed the boy’s palm. “Maybe… it’s you?” A long silence hung in the room, which remained unbroken even when, an endless few seconds later, the boy nodded.
The boy sat up at once. “My father? Where do you know him from?”

out that the country was full of sweet, lonely children. Why bother? Gershon wanted to take care of this boy for now, and if that would quiet some of his anguish, then of course she would support the idea. A sharp cough came from the boy’s room, and Gershon abandoned his bench, letting the blankets slide to the floor. The boy was lying there with his eyes open, staring at the figure that had entered the room. “You are from Bratislava,” he said in Slovakian. He looked more alert than any other time they had conversed. “That’s right,” Gershon said as he straightened the boy’s pillow. “Do you know me?” The boy’s eyes shone, and his forehead was not burning up. “I… I think I might know you.” Gershon spoke cautiously, following the boy’s reaction. “Or more

Democrats Unveil 2020 Platform THE PULSE: The Democratic Party unveiled its 2020
platform, detailing the official positions of the party. The platform covers the full range of issues and seeks to differentiate its policy positions from that of the Republican Party. The platform stresses the need to rebuild alliances and relationships with traditional American allies. It pledges to reverse the Trump administration’s policy of America First unilateralism. It advocates for a distinctly more liberal approach to environmental and social issues. With regard to foreign policy, it pledges to adhere to a tough line toward Russia and North Korea. Below we will highlight some of
102 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 5, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
the foreign policy positions that are relevant to America’s relationship with Israel. IRAN NUCLEAR DEAL: The platform calls for reinstating the Iran Nuclear Deal. According to platform drafters, it is the best option for preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon “as it is vigorously enforced and implemented; it verifiably cuts off all of Iran’s pathways to a bomb without resorting to war.” The platform also states that “We will continue the work of this administration to ensure that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon and will not hesitate to take military action if Iran races toward one.” Last, the platform recognizes that “Democrats will also address the detrimental role Iran plays in the region and will robustly enforce and, if necessary, strengthen
non-nuclear sanctions.” And that “Democrats will push back against Iran’s destabilizing activities, including its support for terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, counter Iran’s ballistic missile program, bolster our Gulf partners’ capabilities. and ensure that Israel always has the ability to defend itself.” ISRAEL: The platform reaffirms the support of the
Democratic Party for Israel’s security. “A strong and secure Israel is vital to the United States because we share overarching strategic interests and the common values of democracy, equality, tolerance, and pluralism. That is why we will always support Israel’s right to defend itself.” The platform also reaffirms the Democratic commitment to “oppose any effort to delegitimize Israel, including at the United Nations or through the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions Movement.” The platform also states that Democrats are committed to a two-state solution and that Jerusalem should remain undivided and the capital of Israel. “Israelis deserve security, recognition, and a normal life free from terror and incitement. Palestinians should be free to govern themselves in their own viable state, in peace and dignity.” THE IMPACT: The platform language on Israel is a vic-
tory for the mainstream moderate wing of the Democratic Party. Progressive elements of the party had attempted to attach an amendment conditioning military aid to Israel on Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians and its policies in the West Bank and Gaza. The amendment was resoundingly defeated 117-34.
Civil Rights Icon John Lewis Laid to Rest THE PULSE: Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) was laid
to rest after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Lewis served for 34 years in the United States House of Representatives. He was an icon of the civil rights movement. Lewis was one of the thirteen original Freedom Riders who led the fight to challenge segregation in the American South. During his journey, he was assaulted and severely beaten when he entered a whites-only waiting room. Lewis was one of the leaders of the famous civil rights march from Selma, Alabama, to Montgomery, Alabama. The walk was met with a violent crackdown by white state troopers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Lewis said that as the officers’ billy clubs bore down upon him, he thought he would die. However, Lewis persevered, and the images of “Bloody Sunday” helped galvanize the na-
tion to his cause. In a recent interview for this column, Representative Tom Reed (R-NY) reminisced about a recent trip to Selma and how he crossed the historic bridge with John Lewis and gained an appreciation for the struggles of that era. John Lewis was also a strong supporter and friend of Israel. In a 2002 op-ed criticizing the U.N. Durban Conference that attacked Israel and Zionism, he quoted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who said that “peace for Israel means security, and we must stand with all our might to protect its right to exist, its territorial integrity. I see Israel as one of the great outposts of democracy in the world, and a marvelous example of what can be done, how desert land can be transformed into an oasis of brotherhood and democracy. Peace for Israel means security, and that security must be a reality.” THE IMPACT: John Lewis’s coffin was taken across the
Edmund Pettus bridge one last time in a horse-drawn carriage. Flags were flown at half staff. His funeral was attended by Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama. In a posthumously published op-ed, Lewis called on the country to unite in the fight for human dignity. “Though I may not be here with you, I urge you to answer the highest calling of your heart and stand up for what you truly believe. In my life, I have done all I can to demonstrate that the way of peace, the way of love and nonviolence is the more excellent way. Now it is your turn to let freedom ring.”
Herman Cain, a One-Time Republican Presidential Contender, Dies THE PULSE: Herman Cain, a one-time front-runner
for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, succumbed to COVID-19. He was 74 years old. Cain was the founder of Grandfather Pizza and campaigned in 2012 based on a simple 9-9-9 formula, which corresponded to a flat rate of 9% income tax, 9% sales tax and 9% corporate tax. He was the co-chair of Black Voices for Trump. Cain attended Trump’s rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and posted a picture of himself sitting closely among others without a mask. Cain tested positive for the coronavirus nine days after attending the campaign event. A spokesman for Cain said that there is no way of knowing for sure how Cain contracted the virus and that he had done a lot of traveling, including to Arizona. President Trump called Cain “a very special man, an American Patriot, and [a] great friend.”

Dear Friend,
We have received many questions about the new Pay Now, Buy Later program, regarding the possibility of ribbis. Although according to our Rabbinical guidance a heter iska would have been the correct way to operate, we have chosen to cease the concerns of our customers by phasing out this program. To compensate, we will begin the Buy Now, Pay Later program earlier than planned, starting: Wednesday, August 5th.
How it works: Your purchase amount will be split into thirds, with the first installment to be paid at checkout by cash, credit, or check. Then, we will record two credit card numbers and charge one a month later, and then again in the third month, for the remainder of the amount. (The second card will be used as a backup if needed.) No minimum or maximum amount needed for purchase. Buy now, Pay later is only valid on full-priced items through November.

“NO WAY.” “NOT FOR ME!” “MY KIDS CAN BARELY SURVIVE THIRTY MINUTES IN A CAR TOGETHER.” These are some of the common reactions I receive when discussing our summer road trips with others. In our family, however, road trips have become the highlight of our summer experiences. One summer a few years back, our family flew to Colorado to spend a few days in the Rocky Mountains. My son was ecstatic about our plans, yet disheartened that we would not be driving. Over the past thirteen years, we have covered close to forty states and visited three Canadian provinces. A good road trip requires a positive can-do attitude and some proper planning. Done right, it is a powerful experience. It creates great family time with wonderful memories forged and relationships fortified as your car or van becomes your own family cocoon away from the din and hum of the typical fast-paced life. Also, road trips make it possible to travel at one’s own pace and visit sights that would likely be passed over if flying to the destination. As we’ve traveled throughout America, we’ve come to realize that while extended family road trips may not be common, we are hardly unique. We’ve met many families that take to the road and love the experience. We’ve also helped other families plan their very first routes, and many have become avid road travelers since. This article will focus on three recent road trips: Miami to the Grand Canyon; Portland, Oregon, to Squamish, British Columbia; and Lakewood to Acadia National Park in Maine. It will also provide tips on packing food and where to stay. Of course, in the age of COVID-19, travel presents serious challenges. However, be it this year or the next or sometime in
120 / THE MONSEY VIEW
the future, these tips can help set up a family journey of great memories and excitement. Just remember that it can be done. And remember to take pictures!
Driv ing Tips Try to schedule your driving toward evening or night time. During the afternoon hours, the glare of the sun can be oppressive and make the driving more tiresome. Driving later in the day also allows younger kids to fall asleep and gives the older kids more time to schmooze with their parents. I like to set out at around 5:00 p.m. and stop about two hours later for a barbecue supper. Interstate rest areas offer tables and space for the kids to run around and play. Always bring along a ball to play catch; glow-in-the-dark footballs are a real hit when the skies turn dark. After supper, I usually continue driving until about 2 a.m. and then check into a hotel. The kids usually sleep late in the morning, and then we spend the day visiting the area in the vicinity of the hotel. Food and Lodging One of the things that many find overwhelming is where to stay and what to eat. We travel in a minivan, sometimes ours and sometimes a rented one. A rooftop cargo carrier for extra luggage space is always a
plus. We stock the car with a cooler filled with meat items such as hot dogs, burgers and cold cuts, and another cooler stocked with cholov Yisroel milk items; a fair selection of kosher food items are readily available at supermarkets across the U.S. We also travel with a Coleman RoadTrip grill. It’s a little bulky and takes up space, but it has up to 20,000 BTU of grilling power and also has grates that can easily be switched to a skillet or stovetop. We also bring along a milchig sandwich maker and a fleishig George Foreman grill. Since we carry food, we look for hotels that have in-room refrigerators and freezers. We generally frequent Residence Inn by Marriott locations because they often offer two-bedroom suites that can hold up to six to eight people. (It is often cheaper than two hotel rooms). Each room or suite in the Residence Inn features a full fridge and freezer as well as an oven and stove. The oven can be kashered by putting it through a self-clean cycle, and then it can be used regularly. (Consult your halachic authority for personal guidance.) Other hotel chains that offer similar amenities to Residence Inn are TownePlace Suites by Marriott, Homewood Suites by Hilton, and Staybridge Suites by IHG.
Planning and Minyanim A successful trip requires proper
planning. Some of the best planning information can be found in state and city tour books. These books are typically mailed free of charge by the respective tourism office. The most important planning is obviously in regard to minyanim. Chabad Houses throughout the United States are often a good bet for finding one. Some Chabad minyanim make use of Minyan Maker software, which tracks how many people are committed to attending a minyan on a given day and lets you know once the minyan is confirmed. Additionally, Go Daven has a pop-up minyan tool that allows one to access temporary minyanim that pop up in tourist hotspots during prime travel season.
Road Trip Experiences One of the side benefits of traveling on road trips is having the ability to meet and interact with different people. We’ve gained a new appreciation for Chabad shluchim, many of whom homeschool their children and live away from abundant Jewish communal life to provide an experience of Yiddishkeit to non-observant Jews. The hachnasas orchim of many out-oftown communities has touched us too, and we’ve experienced Shabbos in numerous locales throughout America. We’ve also met many interesting non-Jews. A woman outside of Fort Bragg in North Carolina had never
August 5, 2020 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 121 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
met a Jew before. She was so excited that she asked to shake my wife’s hand. Then there was a soldier in Virginia who asked me if the strings of my tzitzis correspond to the 613 commandments or just the original Ten Commandments, and an usher in Moosic, Pennsylvania, asked me to promise him that Jewish youth will always remain true to their religion and never falter. Since we are noticeably Jewish, many have let us know that they consider Jews to be the Chosen Nation, and some have even asked us for blessings.
Road Trip Costs When done right, road trips don’t have to cost a whole lot of money. Using your car may add to its wear and tear but will save you on rental expenses. Using credit card reward points for hotel stays can be another way to save. If you have status with a hotel loyalty program, you can book a smaller room and request a room upgrade. Traveling with the family will also save you money on day camps, cleaning help and utilities. Visiting national parks will get you an excellent bang for your buck. An annual pass for a family costs only $80 and is good at all national parks throughout America. Factory tours, as well, are usually economically priced and are even sometimes free. Some great ones are the Jim Beam Distillery in Clermont, Kentucky; the Celestial Seasonings factory in Boulder, Colorado; the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory in Louisville, Kentucky; and the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky. COVID-19 This summer, many day camps and sleepaway camps are closed, and road trips and other vacations may seem more appealing. However, when traveling, be aware of COVID-19 travel restrictions and adhere to the best health practices. Current CDC guidance advises against non-essential travel, especially for the highrisk population. However, many Americans are choosing to embark on summer travel, but it is imperative that proper precautions be taken. When driving, one will need to stop at restrooms, gas stations and rest areas. Be careful to wear a mask and disinfect all areas that are commonly touched when making use of public restrooms and facilities. When staying in hotels, avoid elevators with multiple people and common areas. When considering road trip activities, outdoor activities such as visiting national parks are preferable to indoor attractions such as factory tours and museums.

DAY 1: SILVER SPRINGS, FL. Silver Springs is home to an iconic state park that bears its name. It is renowned for its natural beauty and did not disappoint. We took a glass-bottom boat tour of the famous azure springs where we got up-close views of the water and aquatic wildlife. DAY 2: PENSACOLA, FL. Pensacola is home to the National Naval Air Museum located on the Pensacola Navy Base. NAS Pensacola is also the home of the Navy Blue Angels flight team. We got to watch a live practice; their feats were dramatic and wildly impressive. That evening we traveled through Alabama and Mississippi. DAY 3: NEW ORLEANS, LA. New Orleans has the oldest operating streetcar in
the United States and has many plantations outside the city. It is also home to a famous World War II museum. We visited the famed Oak Alley Plantation, rode the St. Charles Streetcar, and went biking in the historic French Quarter.

DAY 4: AVERY ISLAND, LA. Avery Island is a salt dome located in southwestern Louisiana. It is home to the Tabasco Hot Sauce factory. We toured the plant and were able to see peppers growing, sauces aging in barrels, and the bottling line. DAYS 5 AND 6: DALLAS, TX.
Dallas has many attractions. We visited the CR Smith American Airlines Museum and The Sixth Floor Museum. The Sixth Floor Museum is a fascinating place. It is located at the exact spot of the Kennedy assassination and does an excellent interactive job retelling the history of this tragic event. Shabbos was spent with relatives in Dallas. They were awesome hosts, and we got a real feel for this wonderful community.
DAY 7: FORT WORTH, TX.
The Fort Worth Stockyards is vintage Texas. It is the home of the only twice daily cattle drive. Texas longhorns abound in the Stockyards, and for a small fee, one can climb up and sit on the saddle of one of them.
DAY 8: AMARILLO, TX. Amarillo is home to the Palo Duro Canyon and Cadillac Ranch. We took a jeep tour of the canyon and got to see its beauty upfront and close. Cadillac Ranch is a quirky roadside attraction consisting of ten Cadillacs buried nose down in the ground. Visitors are free to spray-paint the cars to their liking until their artwork gets covered when the next group of spray-painting tourists arrives. DAY 9: ALBUQUERQUE, NM.
Sandia Peak rises 10,000 feet over the city of Albuquerque. We rode the tramway up its rocky face for breathtaking views of the landscape below. We spent the afternoon in Old Town Albuquerque, visiting its many shops and buildings built in the Pueblo-Spanish style.
DAY 10: GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, AZ.
The Grand Canyon needs no introduction. After a night in Flagstaff, Arizona, we headed out to the national park. The grandeur of the canyon left an indelible impression on us. We hiked the rim trail and viewed the sunset from a jut out above the canyon ridge. DAY 11: HOOVER DAM, NV. Our last day began at the
Route 66 museum in Kingman, AZ, which celebrates Route 66, the original American mother road. Next was Hoover Dam, a dramatic feat of engineering located in a breathtaking location. Black Canyon and Lake Meade provided impressive views. We walked across the dam, which straddles the Arizona-Nevada border, visited the tourist center, and trekked across the breathtaking Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, which spans the canyon below. Then it was off to the airport where we returned our car and took a five-hour flight back home.

PORTLAND, OR, TO SQUAMISH, BRITISH COLUMBIA (CANADA), 2018 9 DAY S , 1, 20 0 M I L E S
DAY 1: COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE, OR. The trip began in Portland, where we headed out east of the city to the picturesque Columbia River Gorge. The gorge spans the OregonWashington border. Our first stop was the Portland’s Women’s Forum State Scenic Viewpoint, which provides stunning views of the gorge and the mighty Columbia River. Next, was Vista House, another scenic vantage point that has been used as a rest area for travelers since the 1920s. A highlight of the gorge is Multnomah Falls. The double-layered falls is one of the most visited sites in Oregon. We capped off the day with a visit to the Bonneville Lock and Dam, where we observed salmon swimming upstream against the current in the Columbia River. DAY 2: MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, WA. Mount Rainier, an active stratovolcano
located in the Cascade mountain range, rises more than 14,000 feet high. We hiked the trails at the Paradise visitor center. Wildflowers are abundant in the area, and there are numerous waterfalls. The stunning rock face of the mountain is visible from the trails, and melting glaciers contribute to ice flows down the mountain’s side. DAYS 3 AND 4: SEATTLE, WA. Downtown Seattle offers a host of sights. We rode the virtual simulator at Wings Over Washington, which provides an overview of Washington State history and its sights. Our visit to the
THE MONSEY VIEW / 127
Pike Place market with their legendary fish market was another memorable stop. Amazon’s headquarters and the nearby Amazon Go Store were a hit. Finally, Seattle’s Space Needle, an icon of the Pacific Northwest built for the 1962 World’s Fair, provided us with excellent views of the city. Shabbos was spent at the home of family friends in the wonderful neighborhood of Seward Park. DAY 5: EVERETT, WA. Everett is home to the largest Boe-
ing production facility. We toured the plant and got to see production lines of the 747 and the then-brand-new 787 Dreamliner. DAY 6: SAN JUAN ISLANDS, WA. The San Juan Islands are an archipelago in the waters off of northwestern Washington State. The surrounding Skagit Valley and the imposing heights of Mount Baker and the Cascade mountain range add to its magnificence. We observed bald eagles perched on rocky outposts, puffins swimming in the water, and whales blowing air from their spouts. DAY 7: VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA. Vancouver is known for its beauty. We biked the trails in the famous Stanley Park and then drove the breathtaking Sea to Sky
128 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 5, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Highway. The Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish, BC, offers one of the most awe-inspiring views one will ever see. We hiked the trails at the top of the mountain and spent the afternoon at the nearby Shannon Falls. We ended the day back in Vancouver at Capilano Park and crossed its famous 450-foot suspension bridge. DAY 8: OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK, WA. The towns that dot the Olympic peninsula are small and quaint. The town of Sequim is best known for its lavender farms. We picked lavender in fields flowering purple and yellow. The national park is vast and is best known for its Hoh Rainforest and the breathtaking Hurricane Ridge. The views at Hurricane Ridge did not disappoint. A deep valley and snow-capped peaks surrounded us as we took in the grand views of the surrounding mountain range. DAY 9: CANNON BEACH, OR. Crossing back into Oregon
along the coast, the first town is Astoria, which is home to the Columbia River Maritime Museum that highlights the history of the area. However, the area’s highlight is Ecola State Park, with its scenic overlook, which provides dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean. As night fell, we headed back to Portland and concluded our trip.

LAKEWOOD, NJ, TO BAR HARBOR, ME, 2016 5 DAY S , 1,12 7 M I L E S
DAY 1: BOSTON, MA. We head northeast to Boston, Massa-
chusetts, the birthplace of the American Revolution. Boston Harbor is beautiful and well kept. The Tea Party Museum is located at the spot where the ships docked in Boston in 1773, and the museum is interactive and recreates the events that led up to the Tea Party. We even got a chance to dump mock boxes of tea into Boston Harbor. DAY 2: PORTLAND, ME.
Portland is a quaint city. We headed to the Portland Headlight on Cape Elizabeth, which is the most photographed lighthouse in America. In the afternoon we boarded a fishing boat that took us out to Casco Bay. The fishing boat was a massive hit with the kids as the captain let them pull in bait traps and lay traps of their own. Then they got to hold fish caught from the sea.
DAY 3: BANGOR, ME.
Bangor is a great spot from which to head out to Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park.
130 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 5, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
After arriving at the park, we hiked up Gorham Mountain, and my two-year-old insisted on hiking the mountain by himself instead of having an adult carry him in a backpack. The craggy outposts and mountain vistas that come right up to the sea were truly breathtaking. DAY 4: BAR HARBOR, ME. Cadillac Mountain is the spot
in mainland United States that experiences sunrise first. The mountain offers astounding views of the Cranberry Isles and the surrounding areas, and there are multiple hiking options at the top of the mountain. Agamont Park in Bar Harbor is another quaint spot in which many tourist shops abound. As night fell, we attended an excellent ranger-led program in Acadia National Park. DAY 5: HARTFORD, CT.
We headed back south, stopping in Hartford on the way. We stayed in the Catskills for Shabbos, and then headed back to Lakewood.

EVERYONE KNOWS
that national parks are as all-American as apple pie, fireworks and hot dogs on buns, right? Phrases such as “Go RVing!” — which is used as a rally call to visit the wonders of the country’s nature preserves — are so ingrained in the American psyche that the majority of citizens have at one time or another camped, hiked, strolled or at least snapped a few photos at a national park. We heimishe Yidden have a unique appreciation for the untainted wilds that provide much-needed respite from the billboarded streets of urban life. But this continent’s natural beauty wasn’t fully valued for the treasure it is until it became a playground for the upper crust, largely thanks to an industry that was less interested in the scenery and more interested in the monetary greenery: the railroad companies.
O
Of course, towering mountains, deep ravines and wild animals of magnificent proportions were awesome enough to make most people who saw them catch their breath in awe, but they didn’t make Americans stop and worry about their preservation — especially because many people had never even had the chance to be awed by them. Most Americans of the 1800s were simply busy trying to eke out a living on the Eastern Seaboard, with neither the time nor the breadth of vision to worry about the longevity of the wilderness in the face of western expansion. Nevertheless, green spaces were desirable to those in urban areas, and to that end, Brooklyn and Philadelphian cemeteries of the 1830s served dual functions for the common folk as a place to both bury their dead and have a picnic. It wasn’t until 1853 that the New York government purchased roughly one square mile to be used as a park — Central Park, to be exact — which was a decidedly more palatable way of enjoying the fresh air. But as wonderful as city parks proved to be, they were no substitute for roaring falls, deep ravines and majestic mountains unmarred by the touch of industrialism. As Americans began to spread further throughout the country, the idea to preserve natural landmarks began to take form. Niagara Falls, one the first areas

experimented on in terms of preservation, sadly turned into a laughingstock and even a source of fear for the country, for though the falls themselves were preserved, the nearby areas were built up by unscrupulous businessmen who turned the location into a cheap tourist trap. In 1871, Henry James, an American writer, described the scene at Niagara: The spectacle you have come so far to see is choked with horribly vulgar shops, booths and catch-penny artifices which have pushed and elbowed to within the very spray of the Falls. The inopportunities one suffers here amid the central din of the cataract from hack men, photographers and vendors of gimcracks is simply hideous and infamous. Their cries at times drown out the thunder of the cataracts.
Artwork, photography, and first-hand tales of America’s beauty ignited the imagination of the masses

Far worse than the cacophony created by the street vendors and performers were the conmen who controlled the area. One of the hotels in Niagara was described by those in the know as “The Den of the Forty Thieves.” Multiple guests reported that in order to check out of the hotel, they had to pay a ransom or suffer the beating and threats that quickly followed a refusal. Europeans who visited Niagara lamented the commercialization of the grand falls, for in the attempt to bring man close to nature, the worst of man’s own nature had come to the fore.
Alexis de Tocqueville, a French writer who visited Niagara, wrote to a friend in 1831, urging him to hasten to the site if he wished “to see this place in its grandeur. If you delay,” he cautioned, “your Niagara will have been spoiled for you. Already the forest round about is being cleared…” As the years went by, shame over the fate of Niagara settled over Americans. In 1879, officials were tasked with the job of preparing a special report on the preservation of Niagara. The next several years saw an uptick in public interest and advocacy over the restoration of Niagara’s natural beauty, and in 1885, the falls were awarded with becoming America’s first state park, the Niagara Reservation.
SECURING THE SEQUOIAS Even before the conservation actions for Niagara began in earnest, though, Americans had begun dreaming of the world beyond the East Coast. Since the days of the Gold Rush, which began in 1848, the desire to get rich quick brought a significant influx of people to California, many of them from the East Coast. Though some found their fortune, others didn’t. Carleton Watkins was one of those failed miners, and though he didn’t come home with precious minerals, he did end up discovering personal gold behind the camera lens. The photos he sent back of soaring mountains and gigantic sequoia trees located in what we now call Yosemite National Park ignited the imagination of readers and snagged the attention of a California senator. In 1864, Senator John Conness, realizing that the sequoia trees were a national treasure that could easily be squandered by individuals who might exploit or destroy them, approached Congress and requested that the land be marked as public property and protected by law. President Lincoln took a few moments from his busy schedule, which involved handling the ongoing Civil War, and signed the Yosemite Grant Act into being, which stated that the area was being set aside “upon the express conditions that the premises shall be held for public use, resort, and recre-
Despite being the first protected area of wilderness, Yosemite wasn’t the first national park; that distinction goes to Yellowstone National Park, located in the Montana, Wyoming and Idaho region. Yellowstone was, in fact, the world’s first national park. The Colorado River at The Grand Canyon National Park

ation.” Thus, the land was placed into the hands of the state of California for safekeeping. Unfortunately, the state was less effective than desired at keeping the land protected from loggers and cattle owners, who may have interpreted “public use” to mean they were free to use the wilds as they saw fit… It wasn’t until 1880 that Yosemite was given the status of a national park, which was a new designation, giving it protection under the national government.
A BATTLE OVER NATURAL RESOURCES But what’s the good of a national park if there’s no one around to appreciate it? That’s the question preservationists had to contend with in the early days. Even until 1908 — more than a quarter century after being established as a national park — Yosemite hosted barely 13,000 tourists per year. While relatively few tourists were enjoying the Works of His Hands at Yosemite, hundreds of thousands of San Franciscans were aching for a reliable source of water. To that end,
As wonderful as city parks proved to be, they were no substitute for roaring falls, deep ravines and majestic mountains unmarred by the touch of industrialism. the Tuolumne River that runs through Yosemite’s Hetch Hetchy Valley was seen as the ideal solution. It took seven years of struggle between conservationists and the city before Congress stepped in and signed an act in 1913 that allowed the valley to be flooded in order to become part of a system that now supplies San Francisco without about 80% of its water. Whether or not one agreed that using the Hetch Hetchy as a fresh water source for the city was appropriate, all agreed that visitations to national parks needed boosting or they just might not be worth the loss of their benefits to society, which came about through the efforts in preserving them. Enter the railroads, the self-serving heroes of the national parks.
SEE AMERICA FIRST! In the early 1900s, the government woke up and realized that national parks were not only a source of pride, but also a source of revenue. In the century’s first decade, it was estimated that U.S. richies spent Zion National Park

roughly $200 to $500 million per year on European tourism. The Swiss Alps, specifically, were known as the playground of the wealthy. Why shouldn’t that money be funnelled back into the American economy? officials began to wonder. Lo and behold, a non-altruistic partner stepped forth, ready to do its part in prodding tourists to visit the national parks. Over the next handful of years, American railroad
companies invested heavily in advertising brochures, guidebooks, magazine articles and more — all to promote the national parks that their railroad lines just happened to run past…The Great Northern Railroad went the extra mile and plastered the slogan “See America First!” on their trains, encouraging citizens to reconsider heading out of the country for vacation and to seek the treasures closer to home. In order to accommodate the wealthy who were ready to “See America First” (or second or third), the railroads and park conservationists realized that quality lodgings would have to be built. To that end,

grand buildings and rustic lodges began sprouting up around national parks all over the country. There was a majestic hotel built at the rim of the Grand Canyon, for instance, and Swiss-style chalets at Glacier National Park — all funded, at least partially, by the (ever-filling) pockets of the railroad companies. With the onset of World War I in 1914, railroads realized that they had a golden opportunity, as travel to the European continent was only a scarce possibility, and America would “just have to do” for many. The “See America First” campaign was kicked into high gear, upping the number of visitors to the parks. Soon after, in 1916, the National Park Service was launched, with Stephen Mather, the head of the service, enthusiastically embracing the campaign. In his quest to increase tourism, Mather added amenities to the park system such as concessions where visitors could purchase food and necessities. He also promoted the creation of a highway system that would link the national parks to the world in ways other than through the railway system. By the 1920s and ‘30s, the increase in automobile travel began spurring even the average Joe on lengthy road trips that frequently included touring native wonders. At that point, visiting national parks became almost a ritual of citizenship. Today, nearly every American has, at some point or another, visited at least one national park, if not more. These national parks hold a wealth of wonder and heritage… and fascinatingly, our ability to enjoy them today is due to a history that was all riding on a railroad.

After years of planning, construction and bureaucratic impediments, a beautiful little park floating over the Hudson River is soon to become a stunning reality.
A drive along the Hudson down the West Side Highway always offers an interesting visual experience, with the question “Tatty, what’s that?” constantly coming from the back seat. Among countless other attractions, there’s the Intrepid aircraft carrier with dozens of warplanes, as well as the USS Growler submarine parked by its side. Enormous cruise ships are often stationed at local piers, and trapeze artists can be seen swinging high up in the air. Helicopters land and take off, and the Freedom Tower proudly stands tall nearby. In recent years, a new eye-catcher has come into sight on the Hudson River near the Meatpacking District. Dubbed Little Island, this futuristic-looking park is being built on 132 tulipshaped pots rising up from the Hudson River. If you haven’t noticed what looks like a bunch of champagne glasses melded together on the water, you’ve either not traveled on the West Side
Highway recently, or you’re simply the safest, most focused driver in our area. The only thing more striking than its design is its incredibly hefty price tag: a neat $250 million dollars! But before you run protesting this largesse before local politicians, you’ll be heartened to hear that the bill is mostly being footed by Jewish billionaire Barry Dillard who has been behind this proj-
ect from the start. It hasn’t all been hunky-dory, though; it was originally estimated to cost far less (surprise, surprise!), and Mr. Dillard even backed out of the project completely at one point.
Background Manhattan’s West Side has undergone a significant transformation over
the years. Once an industrial hub, the area has been revitalized as a center of art, fashion and technology. In 1998, New York State established the Hudson River Park Trust to “design, build, operate and maintain a new public park and estuarine sanctuary in and along several miles of the Manhattan shoreline.” The trust has a thirteen-member board of directors appointed by the

governor, mayor and Manhattan borough president. In November 2014, Governor Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio, members of the trust and Mr. Diller announced plans to build a 2.4-acre park on the Hudson River where Pier 54 stood dilapidated and slowly sinking. The chair of the trust had approached Mr. Diller, a broadcast and internet mogul, a couple of years prior to see if he would be interested in financing a modest plan to rebuild a pretty pier with trees, called Pier 55, on the place from where ocean liners had once departed. The billionaire expressed interest but told the board to think bolder and bigger. A number of architects submitted plans, and he settled on a design by famed British architect Thomas Heatherwick. The plan quickly came under legal fire, and construction was on and off for a while. Opponents of the plan claimed that it caused an environmental hazard and that the agreements and permits did not follow proper procedures. It turned out that the lawsuits were funded by another billionaire, Douglas Durst, who may have harbored some ill will against the Hudson River Park Trust after unceremoniously leaving his position on the board in 2011. After seeing the estimated costs ballooning and having already spent many millions to defend the philanthropic project, Mr. Diller finally had enough and announced that he’s walking away in September 2017. Governor Cuomo then got involved and reached an agreement between the two

sides, which included the city and state committing to financing the renovation of the unfinished parts of Hudson River Park.
The Dream Coming True With the plan back on, construction began in earnest in 2018. According to the project’s website, workers installed 267 precast concrete piles into the riverbed over the course of ten months, with a fivemonth break in between to allow for fish migration seasons. The large pots, some as high as 30 feet tall and weighing more than 90 tons, were then placed on top of these concrete piles. Quoted in The New York Times, one
August 5, 2020 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 151 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
of the men in charge of construction said that the crane operator has “got to thread the needle from 200 feet in the air.” The team used cables and ropes to keep the pots leveled and in position to be placed precisely atop the narrow concrete pilings. The pots are of different sizes, as the new park will feature rolling, grassy hills. All of them are elevated, though, to allow for some sunlight for marine life below and also to guard against storm surges. With the project conveniently located on the water, the pots were manufactured upstate and sent downstream by barge. The green landscaping is being installed this summer, and the entirety of the park, when complete, is to resemble a leaf floating in the water. Two walkways have been built connecting the pier to the Hudson River Park. Little Island is expected to open to the public in the spring of next year. It will offer New Yorkers and tourists dazzling views, with the Manhattan skyline from the Financial District to Midtown on one side, along with panoramic sunsets over the Hudson River and New Jersey on the other. Over 100 tree species, as well as beautiful walkways, will fill the park, along with grassy lawns for picnics and activities. It is widely expected that this unique project will join The High Line, Hudson Yards and other modern attractions that have boosted the West Side’s reputation as a next-generation tourist attraction.

The Monsey View has teamed up with Rockland Buzz to present to you hiking destinations tucked into beautiful local spots, with trail maps, photos and step-by-step detail. Over the years, there have been many mishaps when individuals have set out on trails improperly prepared or clothed or have conducted themselves in an unsafe manner while hiking, requiring search-and-rescue teams to take to the woods and bring them back to safety. Trail safety should not be taken lightly. Please read and adhere to the safety guidelines detailed on this page. The Monsey View has featured extensive coverage on trail safety and etiquette in issues 155 through 161. Feel free to access them on our website, pick up back issues in our office, or contact our office to have the articles emailed to you.
SAFETY POINTERS Proper packing: Never leave for a hike without a proper knapsack equipped with enough water, charged cell phones, navigation devices, flashlights, emergency shelter, a first-aid kit, and some ready-to-eat, non-perishable nutrition options. Proper planning: Before leaving the trailhead, acquire a map, study it well, and know your route. Always check the weather before heading out. It gets dark in the woods around sunset, so make sure you leave enough time to get out safely. If there is a park ranger at the trailhead, check in with the ranger before heading out.
The Monsey View shares these trails for informational purposes only, with the understanding that hikers take full responsibility for safe behavior.
SIGNS TO KNOW:
Proper footgear: Remember to change into proper footgear, appropriate for the terrain, prior to setting out. Hikers should never hike alone, and should always share their plans with someone outside of the hiking group before heading out. Stay on track. Read and follow all markers and do not veer off the trail. Always check for ticks after a hike.

THIS WEEK:
STERLING FOREST LAKE LOOP HIKE LENGTH: 4.1 miles (1)
DIFFICULTY: Easy-moderate (some of the climbs) DURATION: 3 hours ABOUT THE HIKE:
Sterling Forest State Park is a 22,000-acre pristine natural refuge, which is far less busy than the nearby Harriman State Park. This hike loops around Sterling Forest Lake and boasts beautiful views. It is the ideal spot to allow you to get away from all the stress and give you a sense of serenity.

PARKING: The lower parking lot right next to the Visitor Center, which has room for only a few cars, is only for park staff or those who will be staying 20 minutes or less. Hikers need to park at the upper parking lot, which has room for many cars. THE HIKE: After you park, head toward the Visitor Center. Right before the Visitor Center there are two pathways going to the right(1). The first one is the Blue Trail we will be taking, and the second one is the Yellow Trail. This entire hike will be on the Blue Trail, so go right on the first path and follow the blue blazes into the woods(2). After a short period of time (400 feet), the blue trail will cross a road(3). You need to make a left onto the road and an immediate right turn on the grass where the trail continues on the other side of the road(4). After 300 feet, you will need to continue straight on the Blue, while the Yellow Trail starts on the right(5). A few minutes later, the Blue Trail goes between two trees and turns left(6). The Blue Trail leads to a road a few minutes later, and makes a sharp turn to the left. Do not go onto the road; follow the Blue trail to the left(7)! The Blue Trail continues into the forest, and you will pass a rock outcrop on your right(8). A few minutes later, the Blue Trail turns sharply to the left behind a rock(9). The trail then crosses paved stones and crosses a road(10). After crossing the road, the trail begins to climb(11). The trail continues through the woods, and a

few minutes later, it turns right at a clearing(12). On the left there is a grassy trail, which is private property. You need to turn right on the path(13). About five minutes later, the Blue Trail curves to the left where the Orange Trail starts, joining along with the Blue(14). Just follow the blue blazes. At one point about three minutes later, the blue blaze shows a left turn, where the trail turns only a drop to the left but really turns to the right a few feet further(15). Seven minutes later, the trail turns to the right (the blaze is covered by vegetation(16)), and then turns to the left(17). Keep going another ten minutes, until the trail turns sharply to the left as you approach the power line opening(18). You will pass a rocky outcrop and lake overflow on your right(19). About ten minutes later, you will see a sign post alerting you to make a sharp left to continue on the Blue Trail(20). Be careful to pay attention here to turn to the left and not continue going straight. When you turn left, you will start to see Mountain Bike Trail signs(21) in addition to the blue blazes, as this is a shared-use path. Mountain bikes must yield to pedestrians, but please be mindful that this is a shared-use path. In another five minutes, the Blue Trail turns right at the power line(22) and crosses the lake overflow(23). On your left you will have nice views of the lake(24). After you have enjoyed the view, continue following the blue blazes, and the trail will curve to the left(25). On your left you will see a man-made sandy beach(26). When Sterling Forest was privately owned many years ago, they trucked in sand to create a private beach. There is no swimming allowed here, but it’s a beautiful spot for a lunch stop. Continue on the Blue Trail, and you will reach another area where you cross the lake and the overflow(27). There will be numerous quiet spots, which are picturesque places to stop for a rest(28). For the rest of the hike, you will be following the blue blazes on the main road around the lake, with many lake views. Make sure to always stay on the Blue Trail, and don’t go off on ski trails or alternate paths(29). Around eight minutes later, the trail makes a right turn and goes through a gate(30), and then passes a second gate(31) before continuing straight on the roadway. Continue on the roadway as it circles the lake, and enjoy the many beautiful lake views. You will pass remnants of iron furnaces on your right(32). These furnaces and the iron works in the area were used in the Revolutionary War (1778) to create a giant chain-link barrier across the Hudson River to stop British ships at West Point. Each link of the 770-link chain weighed around 140 pounds! Keep going on the road, and watch for where the trail turns off the road on your left(33). here,

and enjoy the scenic views the trail will pass. Then go over a bridge before finally returning to the Visitor Center. You can stop at the Visitor Center to use the restrooms and see the many exhibits there. PRECAUTIONS:
• It is best to keep moving when passing any swampy areas or standing water (depending on the water level). Such areas can breed flies and mosquitoes, and you might want to use bug spray during wet times. • Most of this hike will not have good cell coverage. We recommend you put your phone in airplane mode to preserve your phone battery, as the phone will constantly search for a signal. If you need help, call 911, as that call will go through much better than a call to someone else. • Between September and February, hunting is allowed, and you should check in with the rangers in the Visitor Center. Usually this means that during the weekdays between September and February, you need to wear bright-colored clothing for safety.

THE MONSEY VIEW / 169
The word “camp” originates from the Latin word campus, which means a field. GO RVING! More than 10,000 PUBLIC CAMPGROUNDS can be found all over America. Pitching a tent at a national park’s designated campsite usually runs at less than $20 A DAY. DESIGNATED CAMPSITES come with amenities such as restrooms, places to dispose of garbage, fire pits and sources of fresh water.
Camping in a non-designated area is usually not allowed in NATIONAL PARKS, but is allowed in many NATIONAL FORESTS. Though the two may sound similar, they are actually run by different government organizations.
People with an extra dose of wanderlust often choose to invest in an RV so they can easily jump from place to place without giving up on cozy accommodations. “RV” is an acronym for RECREATIONAL VEHICLE. The term encompasses mobile homes that are powered by their own engines, as well as trailers that are towed behind cars. Some RVs come stocked with ALL THE COMFORTS OF HOME, including fully operable kitchens, bathrooms and even cozy couches!
There are 62 national parks and 154 national forests in the United States. National parks generally have a 14-DAY MAXIMUM on camping in one location, while national forests usually have a 21-DAY MAX.
RV campsite spots can be rented by the day, and they feature an RV parking platform as well as HOOKUPS to power the vehicle’s sewage, electric and water systems. “BOONDOCKING” is a term that refers to camping out in an RV without the use of hookups. (If you ever see an RV in a Walmart parking lot late at night, the passengers are likely boondocking.) FUN FACT: When the crew of Apollo 11 returned from the moon, they were quarantined in an airtight Airstream RV to ensure no LUNAR PATHOGENS made their way to Earth. Urban camping

CAMPING SAFELY
GLAMPING
It’s important to check with the park you’ll be camping in for specific laws and safety guidance. It’s also important to keep basic safety rules in mind. Here are but a few:
Sleeping in a pup tent not your style? You’re not alone. Many people seek to experience nature while still being able to enjoy their creature comforts such as raised beds and air conditioning. Lucky for those folks, the modern era has seen a jump forward in camping accommodations. The term “glamping” refers to camping made glamorous through new-fangled amenities.
• Never drink water from a creek, stream, pond or lake without purifying it through boiling or by using water purification tablets! • Never leave food out or near your sleeping area; it might attract bears or other wildlife. (Check with the park/forest for specific ways of packing away food.)
YURTS Inspired by the sturdy, circular dwellings that dot the Mongolian steppe, camping yurts generally boast wider and higher indoor areas than most tents. Some of them are large enough to accommodate full beds and kitchens.
• Bring clothing that can be layered as the weather changes.
Food hanging high up to prevent bears from looting the camp

TREEHOUSES
WANT TO TRY A TENT? For only $75 a night, you can try out camping right near Manhattan! The Liberty Harbor RV park offers a place to pitch your tent. (And no, that’s not grass; it’s Astroturf!)
What better way to enjoy the trees than by actually being in one of them? Luxury treehouses offer a unique bird’s eye view of the woodlands.
