There is nothing
URGENT about sitting around in a waiting room. While many urgent cares boast a beautiful waiting area, we pride ourselves on how little our waiting room is put to use. With the shortest wait times in our area and an attentive staff who values your time, Monsey Urgent Care is putting the ‘URGENT’ back in ‘urgent care’.
The waiting room can wait. The doctor will see you next.

ONE NUMBER
Dear Monsey Principals and Bus Drivers, My son came home from a trip one night this week at 2 a.m., trembling and crying. The bus driver had dropped him off on the main road, a street on which it is not at all safe for any Yiddish person to walk in middle of the night, and from there, he walked to our home. We, as parents, put our precious children in your hands. Please, bus drivers, be responsible. If you are driving a bus late at night, drop off the children only at their houses. And if it isn’t possible to drop off a child right in front of his house, at least let him call his parents to pick him up! How would you feel if something would have, chas v’shalom, happened to the child? Principals, I beg of you: Please make sure that every child gets dropped of at home safely. And yes, this must be mentioned to the driver explicitly and should not be taken for granted. A Shaken Mother

A TOUCHING ENCOUNTER Late this past Motzei Shabbos, my child was running a high fever, and I noticed that we had no Tylenol in the house. Since I was near 7-Eleven on Route 59 and College Road, I ran in to buy some. As I brought it to the counter, I realized that I had left my wallet home. Having no choice, I explained to the proprietor that I didn’t have any money to pay and will return the bottle of Tylenol to the shelf. But the man shook his head and said, “No, if you have a child at home who needs it, please take the Tylenol! I trust that you will come back to pay. Please take it.”

I was truly moved by this experience and wanted to give a public shoutout to a man who cared. A Grateful Customer
BE ON ALERT I’d like to share our experience in the hope of preventing others from being robbed. As my husband was exiting Mount Sinai Hospital several days ago, a person approached him and asked if he could borrow money to retrieve his car that had been towed away. My husband was happy to help a person in need, and he gave the man our address so he’d know where to mail a check. He also took down the person’s name and phone number. Not only was the money never returned, but the phone number he provided is not a working number. We’ve heard since that it’s commonplace for scammers to stop people outside of hospitals with their sad stories in an attempt to extort cash. Please be aware and do not fall prey to these scams. A WORLD OF CHESED
Click It Design.com
After attending the Olam Chesed annual costume distribution this past Sunday, I wanted to extend a public thank you for Olam Chesed and everything they do. In addition to communitywide distributions like costumes and snow supplies (which took place in Evergreen Supermarket) the kind of operation they run out of their 50,000-square-foot warehouse is unbelievable. Founder Rabbi Mordechai Roizman together with a team of volunteers pick up huge pallets of unsellable merchandise from big box retailers which they “sell” to needy kallahs and struggling families, who are referred by askanim or other chesed organizations, except they don’t have to pay! Olam Chesed ran a Charidy campaign this past week to raise funds for trucks, drivers and warehouse staff, so that they can continue to grow, accepting more merchandise to help more families in need. The campaign is still live. Every dollar you donate will enable ten dollars in merchandise to those who need it most. For more information, call Olam Chesed at 845.579.2311. C.W.

Parshas
Vayikra By: Malka Schneps
Hashem calls to each and every one of us. Hashem is calling to you. Can you hear? Hashem has sent each of us into this world with a mission to fulfill, and He speaks to us — but we do not hear. This week’s parsha begins, “Vayikra el Moshe vay’dabeir Hashem eilav mei’Ohel Moed… — And He called to Moshe and Hashem spoke to him from the Ohel Moed…” (Vayikra 1:1). Rashi explains that Hashem’s voice did not leave the Ohel Moed. Hashem’s voice was loud and strong, but it was miraculously contained within the Ohel Moed and did not project beyond. In this way, Moshe Rabbeinu heard Hashem’s voice, but Klal Yisroel did not. If Hashem had wanted only Moshe Rabbeinu to hear Him, why would Hashem speak loudly and then restrict the range of hearing to the Ohel Moed? Why wouldn’t Hashem simply speak in a voice that was just loud enough for Moshe to hear and nobody else? R’ Moshe Feinstein, zt”l, explains in Darash Moshe that Hashem projected His voice loud enough for all to hear, because He was in fact speaking to all of us. Hashem wanted us to know that His commandments were being given to us directly from Hashem and not through Moshe or any intermediary. Only Moshe heard, because only he was on a medreigah that was high enough to hear Hashem’s voice without his being harmed. Similarly, R’ Moshe Feinstein explains that Hashem gave the Torah at Har Sinai where all souls were present so that each person would realize that he or she has been personally commanded by Hashem to fulfill the
104 / THE MONSEY VIEW
Torah. Each and every soul, including the souls that had not yet been born, were present at Har Sinai, which means that each and every one of us received the Torah directly from Hashem at Har Sinai, and not through an intermediary. Because we received the Torah directly from Hashem, our sense of personal obligation is that much greater. Likewise, being that Hashem spoke to Moshe from the Ohel Moed in a voice that was restricted to Moshe but loud enough for us all to hear, we know that these commandments are direct commands from Hashem Himself to each and every person, and each person should feel personally obligated to obey. R’ Moshe Feinstein adds that there is a second purpose in letting us know that Hashem spoke to all of us: to let us know that it would have been possible for every person to hear Hashem. It is truly empowering to know that with hard work and dedication, each and every one of us could have been on a madreigah high enough to hear Hashem directly. As we noted above, this week’s parsha begins, “Vayikra… — And He called…” The aleph at the end of the word vayikra is written very small. The Yismach Yisroel, zt”l, explains that Hashem speaks to us through the numerous small and seemingly insignificant incidents we experience each day. A person wakes up and cannot find their shoes, then burns their toast, then finds an item they had previously lost, then gets to work early only to see that it was daylight saving time and they are still late, etc. All of these events seem so
meaningless, yet the Yismach Yisroel explains that they are all messages from Hashem. How can we interpret these messages? How can we know what Hashem is telling us? This week’s parsha begins with Hashem calling to Moshe, “Vayikra el Moshe... — And He called to Moshe.” The Sfas Emes explains according to Chazal that each time Hashem spoke to Moshe, Hashem first called to him. The first Midrash on this week’s parsha cites a pasuk in Tehillim: “Bless Hashem, His malachim, those mighty in strength who perform His word, to hear His word” (Tehillim 103:20). The word “malach” also means messenger and is used to refer to human messengers throughout Tanach. The Midrash explains that the words “His malachim” in this pasuk mean human messengers. The Sfas Emes brings these ideas together as follows: Just as malachim are sent to this world to fulfill a mission for Hashem, we are each sent into this world to fulfill our mission by doing Hashem’s will for us. Unlike malachim, however, we have bechirah and can choose to fulfill our mission. When we do what we are supposed to do in fulfilling Hashem’s will, we become “His malachim,” and thus we are “those mighty in strength who perform His word, to hear His word.” The Sfas Emes explains that when we fulfill Hashem’s will, then we are able to hear Hashem. Hashem is always calling to us, but we can’t always hear. May we all strive to fulfill our mission as emissaries of Hashem in this world and thus hear the call of Hashem.

Airmont to Hold Spring Elections on March 19 Important elections will be taking place next week in Airmont, one of the nine villages in Rockland County to have spring elections on March 19. Contrary to other villages, where most candidates are running unopposed, Airmont’s elections are very hotly contested, even after the Preserve Airmont’s mayoral and trustee candidates withdrew from the ballot when faced with allegations of obtaining fraudulent signatures for their petition. Their exit from the ballot opened the door for a new mayor and change in the composition of the Board of Trustees. Airmont’s current Board of Trustees faces two lawsuits filed by two chassidish groups after it issued a controversial building moratorium and stricter zoning laws, which targets
the Jewish community. On the mayoral ballet are Nathan R. Bubel, who is endorsed by the heimishe community, and Ralph J. Bracco Sr. The Board of Trustees has two seats to fill, and four contestants running: Brian M. Downey, Migdalia Pesante, Ronald L. Roberti and Angela M. Thompson. “As a resident of this village, you should feel that you have a voice and that we are here to represent you,” said candidate Nathan Bubel. “Whether you are having a minor issue with village hall or something larger that involves the state or
school district, we are here for you and we represent you. If you call Airmont home, live in this village and pay taxes, you deserve to have your voice heard.” Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Town of Ramapo at 237 Route 59.
Religious Exemption for Measles Vaccines May Come to an End With measles still continuing to make its way through the county and beyond, a New York City assemblyman has proposed a bill that would outlaw religious and non-medical exemptions statewide. Politico reported that Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz of the Bronx sponsored legislation at the end of January that would repeal existing public health laws that allow unimmunized children to attend school because of “genuine and sincere religious beliefs.” The current measles outbreak is the worst since 1989, and well over 200 cases of measles have been reported in Rockland County and in Brooklyn, although the actual
114 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 13, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
number of cases is believed to be considerably higher. “Kids are getting sick, and they’re getting sick because they’re not vaccinated,” said Dinowitz. “It’s that simple.” Dinowitz acknowledged that getting his bill passed may be an uphill battle, but he feels that the legislation is necessary in the face of diminishing vaccination rates. “Too many children aren’t vaccinated; the herd immunity is gone,” said Dinowitz. “I’m not overly optimistic about its chances, but I do think community health benefits outweigh the individual parents.” Despite approximately 15,000 free immunizations offered at countywide clinics since the out-
break began in October, the number of cases in our area continues to rise. An order from the New York State Department of Health ordering multiple schools to keep unvaccinated or undervaccinated students at home until 21 days after the last confirmed case is reported in the county remains in effect. Several New York City area hospitals have recently enacted a policy that would require all visitors from measles-stricken areas to present proof of immunity to measles before being allowed into areas containing particularly vulnerable patients, including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and others areas housing those with compromised immune systems.

Tell me a little about your background and what made you decide to run for mayor? I’ve been living in Airmont for over 25 years. Recently, Airmont has encountered several tough issues. Though we’ve all heard plenty of talk, I haven’t seen anyone in the current administration actively trying to address these very real concerns. Why do you feel you’re particularly suited to address these issues? As a businessman for over 20 years, I feel that I have the skills to engage successfully with the diverse population of Airmont. I believe I can lead us to practical, effective solutions to satisfy the needs of a diverse suburban community. The time has come to give the people of Airmont back their voice and I feel I am the right person to represent the “voice” of the people. I assume you’ve met with residents of Airmont on the campaign trail. What are some of their concerns? One of the main concerns I’ve been hearing about is that the local government is working against them rather than for them. People feel that though they are paying high taxes, they aren’t getting much for it. There’s a general feeling of having no one to talk to and no voice in the village. For example, we’ve had a new resident apply for permits to make some necessary changes in his home. He got no answer for months. He was under a lot of pressure to move into his new home but was unable to start his renovations. This should never happen. There needs to be consistent, clear communication between the Village Board and our residents. Some residents are experiencing a double standard in which identical applications are denied for some and granted to others with no fair explanation. For instance, a resident recently came in with an evaluation from an arborist recommending that he remove a dead tree from his property. He requested a permit to have the tree removed and was denied. Other residents requesting the same permit with no evaluation in hand, received the permits without any problem. All residents

Nathan Bubel, candidate for Mayor of the village of Airmont, has lived in the Village for more than a quarter century. Bubel was a member of JCPenney’s management team for over 28 years and currently works for furniture retailer Raymour & Flanagan. He is committed to bringing positive changes to Airmont and uniting its diverse population through equal treatment for all, and special preference for none. We spoke to Mr. Bubel to ask him some questions and hear his views about the future of Airmont and the direction he hopes to take in this campaign.
must be treated equally, and we will do everything we can to ensure that everyone is dealt with fairly. Procedures should be clear and simple to implement and there should be easy communication when misunderstandings arise. Traffic and safety issues are another big concern for Airmont residents. There have been complaints about numerous accidents at busy intersections, like the Corner of Rte. 59 and Airmont Road, and again people feel that these concerns are not being taken seriously. Our aim is to respond to the concerns of our residents. Another concern I’ve been hearing about is fiscal responsibility. The current Mayor voted to raise your taxes 4.5% in 2014 and raised taxes again in 2016, by 8.5%. I will protect Airmont from tax increases by attacking wasteful spending and making government more efficient, transparent, and accountable to the people. We pay high taxes and the Village should not be looking to increase the burden. Finally, one of the greatest concerns for many is the two federal lawsuits facing the village and the legal and financial exposure. Lawsuits of this magnitude can potentially bankrupt the village. For the high taxes we’re paying,
there’s so much that can be done to improve the quality of life in Airmont. There are many grants available, but the current administration did not apply for them. My administration will apply and obtain grants to improve our Village. It’s important to maintain what we have while continuing to bring positive changes that will benefit the people. What about the issue of housing and permits? We will maintain strict zoning requirements, to ensure our continued quality of life. Residents should be clearly informed and guided regarding applying for permits and responses should be timely and consistent for all residents. There will be absolutely no zoning changes during our tenure. What is the main message that you want to send to Airmont residents? As a resident of this village you should feel that you have a voice and that we are here to represent you. Whether you are having a minor issue with village hall or something larger that involves the state or school district, we are here for you and we represent you. If you call Airmont home, live in this village and pay taxes, you deserve to have your voice heard. What changes do you plan to implement from your first day in office? We’ve got to start with evaluating what isn’t working. We want to get the message out to all Airmont residents that we’re here for them and not against them. Village Hall must become a friendly place where you can get practical assistance, questions answered, and concerns addressed. Any closing message for Airmont residents? It’s time for Airmont to experience positive change and a fair voice for all! It is extremely important that your voice be heard on Tuesday, March 19, 2019. I am the only mayoral candidate with new and innovative ideas and a great vision for Airmont. Please vote for Nathan Bubel, Brian Downey and Migdalia Pesante on Row B.

RECIPE BY: C.Y.L. STERN PHOTOGRAPHED, PLATED AND PREPARED FOR PRINT BY: IMAGEINATION BY FRIMET CHANA 845.558.6770 These rich, heavenly chocolates with runny fillings are seriously addictive! Choose from three flavors or try them all.

CHOCOLATE SHELLS 2 bars good-quality dairy chocolate, finely chopped
Mold of your choice (hard plastic works best)
DIRECTIONS 1. Melt three-quarters of the chocolate, remove from heat and then add the remaining chocolate to the bowl. 2. Pour melted chocolate into the mold (enough to cover the sides and create a shell). After about 45 seconds, move it around and turn over the mold so the chocolate spreads evenly on the sides. To
avoid bubbles, tap the mold lightly while on flat surface. Scrape off all excess chocolate. 3. Once it is completely cooled, add filling until it is three-quarters full. 4. Place in fridge, and once cooled, cover with the remaining melted chocolate. Make sure to smooth it down.
PEANUT BUTTER CHOCOLATE FILLING 8 oz. semi-sweet chocolate
2 T. butter
⅓ cup heavy cream
½ cup peanut butter
DIRECTIONS 1. Chop the chocolate into very small pieces and place in a bowl. 2. Boil heavy cream on medium to low heat. 3. When it begins to bubble, pour the heavy cream into the bowl of chopped chocolate, let it sit for
30 seconds, and mix with a spoon. 4. Add butter, and then add peanut butter. 5. Let sit in the fridge for three minutes before filling chocolate shells.
CARAMEL FILLING 1 cup light brown sugar
4 T. butter (add ¼ tsp. salt if using unsalted butter)
½ cup half-and-half
1 T. vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS 1. Pour all ingredients into a saucepan. Boil on low heat until it thickens.
2. Remove the pan from heat and let it sit until it is cool to the touch but still runny (it’ll thicken more when it cools completely).
STRAWBERRY FILLING 3 oz. dairy white chocolate
2 T. sugar
¼ cup heavy cream
1½ T. water
½ cup frozen strawberries, defrosted and smashed with a spoon
Optional: Add a drop of red food coloring for a pretty pink color
DIRECTIONS 1. Melt chocolate and heavy cream in microwave for 30 seconds, then mix. 2. Place strawberries, sugar and water in a saucepan. When it bubbles, turn to low heat and continue cooking for approximately 10 minutes
until the mixture is no longer watery. 3. Remove from heat. Add a teaspoon of the strawberry mixture into the chocolate, mix it together, and then add the remaining strawberry mixture.

By: Suri Edelman On Purim, when visitors come and go and we find ourselves noshing on whatever we have on hand, it’s always nice to prepare something healthy and filling to serve family and guests. These pulled beef tacos are so simple to make and are just delicious, especially together with a helping of guacamole. Make enough, because no one will be stopping at just one! Yields 20 mini tacos

Our five-year-old son Yanky coughed and coughed, until it became impossible to ignore. And so our journey began. First we were referred to a pulmonologist who issued the clear verdict: asthma. This was new and scary territory for us. We began with a regular regimen of nebulizer treatment three times a day and periodic checkups. We did hospitals, we did tests, and we did it busy. Then, one night, Yanky couldn’t fall asleep, this time with a new complaint: He was itchy. We called a medical hotline, we gave him drops for allergy relief, we made him an oatmeal bath — but the itching wouldn’t go away, neither that night nor that month. Yanky wouldn’t go to sleep for hours, protested going to cheder, insisted he couldn’t eat because he was so unbearably itchy. I started suspecting that it was related to the nebulizer we were religiously pumping three times a
dies — despite our warnings and the phone call we had placed to his rebbi. We had our work cut out for us now: prepping Yanky, speaking to the school staff, and sending food coloring–free sweets to his rebbi as a stand-in. The itching persisted even as Yanky cut back on the food coloring, but we knew it could take days until there’d be full relief. Meanwhile, I read up on food coloring, and the research I came across tied up all the ends in a neat package. Apparently, food coloring can cause asthma, coughing, trouble breathing — and itchiness. All fingers pointed to this one colorful character!
Food and Color
day. Sure enough, one of the rare side effects listed on the medicine package was itching. I waved this information in front of the doctor, begging her to allow him off the nebulizer and suggest an alternative, but she rejected the concern completely. Strangely, however, Yanky’s coughing stopped very soon after that, and we were too busy with his new itching symptoms to keep to the nebulizer (although according to the doctor, it still had to be used, irrespective of symptoms — but don’t tell). Now we kept visiting the dermatologist, trying out various creams that did nothing except add another charge to our pharmacy bill. Meanwhile, Yanky’s itching was affecting his own functioning and the functioning of the entire family. It was when we consulted a highly recommended allergist located out of town that we finally shed some light on the issue. After scanning Yanky’s bloodwork and asking us a few questions, he named the culprit: food coloring. It sounded bizarre to me, but I clung to what I hoped would finally help Yanky, and committed to keeping him off food coloring. The going was rough from the getgo. The very next day in school at a class siyum, Yanky drank a colored drink and had an abundance of can-
The unfortunate fact is that food coloring is not made from food. Food dyes are concentrates mostly made of petroleum or coal. After you finish gagging, you’ll wonder why food coloring is used at all. But the reason is simple. Walk down the supermarket aisle and imagine what things would look like without food coloring. The yogurts, candies, snacks, drinks — and even American cheese — would all be a hodgepodge of dull colors in shades of gray, white, yellow, beige and brown — none of which would look too appetizing. Food coloring gives food a bright, uniform color, making the food that much more tempting. Food coloring made from natural extracts and wine was used as early as 1500 BCE by candy-makers in Egypt. In more recent times, not all food coloring was sourced from such innocent places, and as time progressed and the commercial food market exploded, synthetic food dyes soon claimed more and more of our plates. It is unfortunate to note that nowadays food coloring is consumed five times as much as it was in 1955. So what? According to recent reports from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a non-profit consumerwatchdog group, food coloring has been linked to to a host of dangers. The health risks associated with most kinds of food coloring are cancer, hyperactivity and allergies. Here are some claims from studies conducted by various health groups that add color to the argument: Yellow #5 or Tartrazine (E-102) has been linked to hyperactivity, allergies, asthma, itching, migraines and cancer. Yellow #6 or Sunset Yellow (E-110) has been linked to kidney tumors and hyperactivity in children. Red #40 or Allura Red (E-129) has been linked to allergies, hyperactivity and cause cancer. Note: The three colors mentioned above account for 90 percent of dyes used in food. Blue #2 or Indigo Carmine (E-132) has been linked to brain tumors, allergies, itching, respiratory problems and hyperactivity. Aluminum (E-173) is believed to affect the nervous system and cause Alzheimer’s disease.
March 13, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 153 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Red #3 or Erythrosine (E-127) has been linked to hyperactivity and cause thyroid cancer. Blue #1 or Brilliant Blue (E-133) has been linked to tumors, hyperactivity and attention disorders, and can also induce allergic reactions in asthmatics. Since manufacturers add food coloring specifically to foods geared to children — who are also their most enthusiastic consumers — it is sobering to note that children are much more sensitive to food dyes. Thanks to their faster metabolism, they may be as much as 50 times more sensitive than adults! So why is synthetic food coloring used? The reason is simple: They provide great advantages for the manufacturers. Synthetic dyes are mass-produced at a fraction of the cost of natural coloring, they are concentrated and don’t impart any taste, and their color is uniform and resistant to changes in heat. Natural food dyes, on the other hand, are costlier to manufacture, and since they are more sensitive, may shorten a food’s shelf life. They can also impact flavor, especially since they are less concentrated and more

must be used to achieve a desired color.
Colorful Nature Nature offers a stunning spectrum of colors, and there are those who do use natural coloring. The four main categories of plant pigments grown to color food products are carotenoids (E160, E161, E164), which produce a yellow-red color; chlorophyllin (E140, E141), which results in green; anthocyanin (163), which results in blue-red; and betaine (E162), which is used to get a red color. Other colorants or derivatives of these groups include annatto (E160b), paprika (E160c), caramel (E150) and turmeric (E100). Of course, too much of anything is never a good thing, and research is being done to test the health implications of these additives. However, they are clearly the better alternative to synthetic food dyes. Instead of reaching for the bottle of food coloring, you can harness
nature’s rainbow of colors in your own kitchen, too. What can you use to color foods? The rule is that if it stains your hands while handling it, it can dye food. You can have great fun coloring foods pink with beets, yellow with turmeric, and green with spinach. Dissolve the food in water, squeeze through a muslin bag to extract a few drops of color — or cook them down to a thick concentrate for a deep color that won’t leave a distinct taste in your food.
Choose Your Color I’ve been a longstanding fan of home-cooked foods, and the research I’ve done only strengthened this conviction. The supermarket offers a dizzying array of color that is a feast for the eyes, but for your body — not so much. Think about it: When marketing their products, food companies’ main objectives are often that they should be cheap to manufacture, look attractive, and last long on the shelves. These fac-

tors add up to one big eyesore: a long list of additives and non-foods mixed into our foods. Homemade foods and baked products can be simple, nourishing, cheap and delicious. The more you base your diet on home-produced foods, obviously, the less unhealthy additives and food coloring you will ultimately consume. I’ve been there and done that, and I strongly recommend it. However, we cannot turn back the clock entirely. It seems that food coloring is here to stay, and kids — well, they’ll always be kids. But there are still ways to cut out most of the dangerous synthetic food coloring from their diets. Choose light-colored foods over bright and heavily dyed foods, look for products containing natural food coloring, and steer clear of toxic metallic dyes (gold and silver).
The Color in Their Cheeks There is a happy ending to our story. Baruch Hashem, Yanky’s coughing is long over, and he has almost completely stopped itching. The nebulizer, pulmonologist, hospital visits, dermatologist, creams — along with the food coloring, of course — are all history. The going wasn’t easy at first. We had to come up with solutions to compensate Yanky for the candy distributed in cheder, find alternatives to Shabbos treats, consistently inspect packages, and call up mothers with the request that they kindly not use sprinkles, colored candies, or even vanilla extract in the cake for the class siyum, to name just a few of the challenges. But with time the burden turned into a blessing. Yanky’s sensitivity has challenged the whole family to be sensitive to him, and our nosh pantry looks different today. We haven’t seen blue tongues in a while, and taffies have been boring less holes in the kids’ teeth. Here was the perfect opportunity to teach our children that food coloring — and sugar, for that matter — isn’t good for anyone, and now they more happily accept the candy substitutes in the form of chocolate chips, dried apricots and other dried fruits (renamed in our house “better than taffies”). If candy manufacturers aim to imitate nature by coloring orange-flavored candies orange and apple-flavored snacks green, I think I can do better and go straight to nature itself — and rediscover the beauty in a bowl of red apples, yellow bananas and bright purple grapes. Almost every processed food today has some form of added coloring. Whether the colors are natural (as in caramel color or vegetable extracts) or artificial (as in red dye No. 40 or blue dye No. 5), one is almost guaranteed to find some added coloring among the ingredients listed on product packaging. The colorant is usually pre-combined with a flavor in the form of syrup or powder, and this color-flavor mixture is the “secret ingredient that differentiates one candy, soda, cereal or snack from the next. Let us take a minute to investigate some of the kashrus issues that might apply to colors. FORBIDDEN COLORS There are colors that are derived from Torah-forbidden material. Examples of this would include squid ink, which is a black color that is used to darken pasta. (If you’ve never heard of black pasta, this simply means that you do not shop in Italian food stores.) Another, more common, example of a Torah-forbidden color is carmine. Carmine is a red color that is made from the bodies of dried cochineal beetles. This very deep red color is commonly used to color Maraschino cherries, and it can also be found in thousands of other
products. Since carmine is made from dried insects, there is discussion among poskim as to whether it is truly forbidden. Indeed, many great poskim were lenient when it came to purchasing drinks that were colored with carmine, because the bugs had been dried and it is assumed that dried bugs have the status of dust. The standard among major kashrus agencies is not to permit carmine under any circumstance. Although carmine is used at very small levels, on the order of parts per million, being that it changes the color of the food and its effect remains visible, there are poskim who argue that the

regular laws of bitul (nullification) do not apply. While carmine may not give any taste to the food, since its appearance remains clearly visible, it is as though one can still see the forbidden matter. According to some, eating a food that was colored with carmine would constitute a Torah prohibition. There are also colors that are derived from rabbinically forbidden material. Common examples of these include grape skin extract (also known as annatto, commonly used to color vinegar) and concentrated grape color. Grape color is made by filtering color out of grape juice. In both of these cas-

these products forbidden to eat, but one is not permitted to derive any benefit from them either. These types of colorants would be found more often in foods that are advertised as being 100 percent natural, since these are good options for those looking for a natural red.
CANDY COATINGS There is much discussion among poskim regarding the kashrus permissibility of shellac. Shellac is used to coat candies, especially jelly beans and gum balls. The purpose of shellac is to give these candies an added degree of shine. Shellac is a resinous material secreted by the lac beetle to coat its eggs to protect them from predators. It forms a rock-like coating over the branches upon which the beetles lay their eggs. The general rule is that any secretion from a forbidden animal is forbidden, and therefore one would assume that shellac should also be forbidden. However, noted poskim, such as Rav Moshe Feinstein, ztl, were lenient to permit the use of shellac. One of the reasons to be lenient is because shellac is completely inedible. Eating shellac is equivalent to eat-

Are you one of those people who find themselves with oodles of Oodles and miles of sugar-coated stringy sweets after your mishloach manos are disassembled? Do play with your food and create a masterpiece with all that sugar instead of eating it! Pair up with a sibling or team up with your neighbors in order to expand your variety of artificially flavored, chemical-filled junk in all colors of the rainbow. Nibble on some inspiration from the houses shown and think up your own house design (or any other object, for that matter). When it comes to creativity, the sky's the limit! We’ve got a tight deadline in order to help you get rid of all that junk before Pesach. Send in your original nosh masterpiece by Thursday, March 28. Every submission will enter a drawing for a chance to win an electric toothbrush! Don’t forget to pass the thanks from your dentist to us.
BONUS: Guess how many sour bites make up this roof! Answer on Boggle page.
Oodles or similar small nosh are great for fine detail.
The bottom of the balcony is a Hadar fruit bar.
Details, details, details. Chocolate lentils are great for fill-ins.
Jellies work better than hard candies because they can be squeezed into place and don’t have to fit an exact area.
Here’s something on a much smaller scale to give you some inspiration for a simpler project.
For this project I used glue gun, since the point was not to eat the nosh! For edible projects, corn syrup works well.

Do you prepare mishloach manos with a theme? Do you absolutely refuse to consider doing so? It’s a hot debate. There are those for it and those against it, all with convincing arguments. I like to prepare themed mishloach manos for several reasons. First, I find themes to be cute. For a creative person who enjoys such things, there is potential for a lot of intricate — and therefore, perhaps, thrilling — detail. Also, did you know that themes can often save you money? A good theme precludes the need for elaborate and expensive contents because you can include foods in your mishloach manos that have a connection to your idea — even if these products would not be classy enough on their own. I recently started including a picture of my kids dressed up on the label so that if one of the recipients isn’t home, they can understand why we included those particular items in the mishloach manos (and, of course, get to see my kids’ costumes). Below are a few mishloach manos ideas, each of which cost $3.50 or less per package. I always try to include something appropriate for adults, like a mini whiskey or something similar. Some of the mishloach manos featured below were put together when I lived in Eretz Yisroel. Now, here in the U.S., I usually visit a discount store to find containers or trays at decent prices. 182 / THE MONSEY VIEW
Chinese | Takeout Tray Sometimes I will spend a little bit more on the container or basket of the mishloach manos to achieve that perfect look. With this mishloach manos I did the opposite; I didn’t use a container at all. To get the right effect, I used a plain foam plate and put a Chinese paper fan onto it. Then I put chow mein noodles in a cellophane bag and placed it on the fan along with chopsticks and small packets of soy sauce and duck sauce. For the main foods, I made fried rice (very inexpensive) and chicken lo mein (mostly pasta with only a bit of chicken) and put them in labeled takeout boxes. As I was creating the labels, I thought to use a play on our last name — and the Cheinhorn Takeout was born! Then I wrapped the whole plate in cellophane and taped it underneath. After Purim, I was surprised and gratified to hear from many people that they very much enjoyed the food, either on Purim or afterward.
TIP: Mini sugar, salt and soy sauce packets, chopsticks, and even small napkins reminiscent of those distributed by an airline (see mishloach manos below), can sometimes be purchased at your local pizza shop or Chinese takeout for a few cents each.

Farmers | Veggie Basket When deciding what to include in a farmer-themed mishloach manos, I knew that I wanted it to be realistic as possible. I also wanted to make something I could prepare a day in advance, since I didn’t want to be busy wrapping the mishloach manos the night before Purim. I scoured the stores until I found the cheapest, most basic brown basket. I filled it with brown raffia and then purchased raw vegetables to fill them. (I was living in Eretz Yisroel then, and the vegetables may have been a bit cheaper there.) Such a basket can be filled with vegetables that are in season and not too expensive, like radishes, squash, onions, purple onions, carrots, sweet potatoes, and so on. After filling the baskets, I wrapped each one in cellophane and tied it with a raffia bow. I loved that the basket looked pretty and colorful — and included healthy foods! There is a common misconception that mishloach manos need to contain foods of two different brachos. In reality, mishloach manos need to include two different foods that not necessarily of different brachos.
184 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 13, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Pilot and Stewardess | Airline Meal For the presentation of the airline meal mishloach manos, I purchased inexpensive plastic trays. Then I baked mini rolls and wrapped them in cellophane. I also baked a jelly roll cake, put slices in a mini plastic dish, and covered those with cellophane as well. (I did all the baking in advance.) Then I put granola mix in a small Ziploc bag and mixed fruits (from a can) in a mini covered container. I also put a small yogurt, coffee, mini chocolate, candy, coffee whitener and a small container of water or juice onto the tray. Then I placed a knife, fork, spoon, salt and sugar into a plastic bag and taped it down underneath so it should look packaged. The label I created listed all the foods inside.
Fishermen | Fish Bowl After finding fishbowls at a local dollar shop, I baked mini snowball cookies and colored them blue. I placed the cookies in the bottom third of the bowl, added some jelly fish on top of them, and then placed a clear whiskey on top of the entire presentation to add some class. Instead of a label, I printed a picture of my children dressed as fishermen and pasted it onto the front of the bowl before filling it. I then wrapped the entire thing in cellophane and used sheer blue ribbon to tie a bow at the top.
TIP: If your local dollar shop is out of a particular product, you can often order it online and have it shipped to your local store to be picked up.

I've spent many sleepless nights pondering very important matters… You know, like world peace and how babies know the difference between an apple and a lollipop. (I've never heard of a mother holding out these two items and the eight-month-old grabbing the apple. How do they know?!) 190 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 13, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Speaking of which, you know how every Purim, your grandmother or mother (depending on your generation) mentions that in their days they gave an apple and a hamentash for mishloach manos? If they wanted to add extra drama, they also layered the tin with a doily and a small grape juice. Or threw in an orange for extra effect. And, of course, it was so nice and everyone was happy. I wonder, though, whether they gave the babies lollipops or whether in those days the babies chose the apple. I also spend sleepless nights wondering whether I should give that kind of mishloach manos this year. With all of the creative ideas floating around, mine will still be the most original. I must confess, though, that I'm a bit worried about the apple turning brown in the middle of a traffic jam on Route 306 or 59. Last year, some deliveries took so long that the packages arrived on Shushan Purim. But by then it's perfectly okay to give a doily and a hamentash, right? It’s amazing to see how Monsey has grown, baruch Hashem, and I do know that this topic has been exploited so much by old-time Monseyites, by new-time Monseyites, and even by the not-so-old and the not-so-new. Some love it, some don't, some don't mind, some mind a little bit, and some mind a lot. Whenever the topic comes up, the debate gets so heated that it makes me happy that I grew up here. And to show you how beautiful we all are, the conversation always ends with, “Mi k’amcha Yis-
Some love it, some don’t, some don’t mind, some mind a little bit, and some mind a lot. roel.” Years ago, we used to divide our Purim day between Monsey, Williamsburg and Boro Park. The action would be popping in the city, but I sorely missed seeing my friends and would beg to stay in town. One year I finally won and we started staying home. Monsey! Ah, glorious Monsey! Today, I can almost say that one can barely tell whether they’re on 13th Avenue or Lee Avenue or Francis Place. It is so lebedig! The spirit is felt everywhere, as big inflatable clowns bounce on the hoods of the station
wagons. Umm, wait, that was 20 years ago. Now it’s minivans and Honda Pilots and smart cars. Let me share with you an incident that I watched four years ago. (Or was it three? Five? I'm not sure. My memory is a little hazy — I must've drunk too much grape juice that day.) A school bus with about 30 bachurim on board was riding in front of us, and tied down on top were a big stuffed panda bear, giraffe and clown. To me it was such a heartwarming scene. It must have taken the better part of a day for the boys to tie them down. Behind the bus was a mini smart car. I hadn't even noticed it was there. Until. Until the giraffe came loose. And the clown came loose. And the panda bear came loose. The clown fell to the left. The giraffe fell to the right. And the panda fell to the back. Onto the smart car. Now the school bus with 30 exuberant bachorim in it was at a standstill. The beeping all around, and the joy of the animals now roaming free, were a sight to be seen. But all eyes were on the smart car. It took but an instant for the hood to totally cave in. Out came a costumed magician from whatever was left of the car. He waved his wand and the bear fell off. Police came. Chaverim came. Half of Monsey came. It was something else. And they say Monsey is quiet... We had a zoo on the loose. Nobody can top that! Come to think of it, I think it was six years ago. NOW I'M REMINDED of another story that happened right before
Purim. And, no, it doesn't involve any zoo animals, stuffed or otherwise. And no apples. I can’t mention any names, but one year in high school we went snow tubing. You know what? I think I'll skip the story… Let's just say someone fell and hurt their foot and dressed up as a patient that Purim, cast and all. One sibling dressed up as a doctor. The other sibling was a nurse. The mother did not have to dress up at all. For she was the doctor, the nurse, the merchant, the chief, and the baker. (I’m not sure about the candlestick maker.) That’s how it is with costumes. Sometimes it just all comes together. One year I found a rocking horse in someone's dumpster. I know, I know, I'm always throwing things out, but that horse screamed cowboys. It really smelled like a horse. So I was going to dress my kids up as cowboys just for the horse. I know, not very original. But the horse! Problem was I only had girls and they absolutely refused to be cowboys, but I persisted (did I mention the horse?). In the end I got my way, because I could still bribe them with half the nosh aisle at that time. On Purim I got the cutest pictures — but then I dumped the horse. The smell lingered until the next Purim when my girls insisted on dressing up as kallahs. I wanted something more original, but that year they got their way. They were thrilled. Listen, how many times can a mother win? Last year everyone won. We dressed up as Albert Einstein. Everyone thought we were really brilliant, but that all changed when Purim ended and I still had no clue what 17½ less 389 divided by 3 million tiny atoms equals. THIS YEAR I'm looking for the most original costume. Whoever finds it gets a bag of lollies. Or an apple corer. Or a stuffed animal. But one that’s way smaller than a smart car. Happy Purim, everyone! Sara

SPEECH ON SHABBOS | PART 6
We mentioned in previous weeks that from the pasuk in Yeshayahu that says “daber davar,”1 we learn that one’s speech on Shabbos shouldn’t be like that of a regular day.2 Based on this, the halacha dictates that it is assur to say, “I will do x tomorrow,” if x is assur on Shabbos. This applies whether it is a melacha d’Oraisa, such as saying, “I will cook/ write/drive/etc.,” or even if it is only an issur d’rabbanan, such as, “I will do business/buy/carry muktzah/etc.”3 Furthermore, speaking about a forbidden melacha that one will do is assur even if saying it does not contribute in any way to getting it done.4
much even in things that are oneg Shabbos (like eating and drinking), because Shabbos is a day meant for learning Torah, especially for those who are unable to be osek in Torah during the week.9 Even for those who learn Torah full time during the week, it is considered bitul Torah to be marbeh too much even in oneg Shabbos.10 This is especially true given the fact that the spiritual result accomplished from the Torah learned on Shabbos is one thousand times greater than Torah learned during the week.11 Furthermore, it is said in the name of the Chofetz Chaim that since Shabbos is shakul k’neged all the mitzvos, every mitzvah we do on Shabbos is multiplied by 613. Now, according to the Gra that every letter of Torah learned is a mitzvah by itself, it follows that every letter of Torah learned on Shabbos is multiplied by 613!

One can only imagine the number of mitzvos one can accumulate by dedicating his time to learning Torah on Shabbos.12 If one does not get enjoyment from speaking about mundane things and is only doing it to make others around him happy, then it is assur for him to be marbeh in speaking about them on Shabbos. In a case where he gets enjoyment from the fact that others are enjoying the conversation, then some poskim say it might be okay for him to discuss these topics.13 In any case, one must be careful not to mention plans to do things that are assur on Shabbos — and obviously no lashon hara, lightheadedness and making fun, which are also assur on yom chol.14 Thinking about melacha Even though thinking about one’s business deals or melacha that one will do after Shabbos is mutar, it is still a mitzvah not to think about them at all, since Chazal tell us we should consider all of our work completed once it is Shabbos.15 This thought, says the Tur, can then bring one the biggest oneg Shabbos possible.16 Some sources even say that the melacha that one thinks about on Shabbos will not have bracha.17 If thinking about one’s work will cause him worry and nervousness, then he should certainly avoid thinking about it.18 The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak.

The First Lollipops While mention of lollipops today might conjure up images of swirly colors and crinkly wrappers, researchers say that many ancient societies of Africa and Asia created similar treats by pushing fruits or nuts onto a stick and then coating them with honey to preserve it. Eventually, as sugar became more widely available in the 1600s, Europeans boiled it up to create goodies that looked more like today’s treats. Those lollipops — though they weren’t yet called by this name — also had a stick stuck into them to get more stickiness in the mouth and less on the fingers…
A Tale of Two Claims Over in the U.S., who created the first lollipop? As is the case with many other inventions, there are two confectioners who claimed they were the ones behind this great idea, and most suspiciously — they lived in the same city! TALE NO. 1:
TALE NO. 2:
George Smith was a partner in a confectionery located in New Haven, Connecticut, named the Bradley Smith Company. According to his story, he came up with the idea to put sweets on a stick in 1892. He planned on selling this newfangled confection to parents of little children who would soon grow to love the treat. At this point, the sweet had not yet been given the name lollipop.
In the same city of New Haven, Connecticut, there was another confectionery by the name of McAviney Candy Company. According to their story, the wooden spoons used to stir boiling candy mixtures would get layers upon layers of flavored candy coated on them. Apparently, the employees of the company began taking these stirring spoons home at the end of the day as a treat for their children, and the company’s owners soon saw the potential behind this idea. In 1908, they began selling what they called “candy sticks” to their customers, and a new treat was born… or so they say.

A Tale of Two Names While the person or company behind the first lollipop remains a mystery, the fact remains that the term “lollipop” was patented by the Bradley Smith Company in 1931. But… another question begs to be answered: Where did this name come from? Oddly, this story, too, has two versions, which just goes to show that you can’t always believe every tale you hear... TALE NO. 1:
TALE NO. 2:
The word “lollipop” was first seen in a London newspaper in the late 1700s. By the 1800s, the word, sometimes spelled “lollypop,” was used in many novels written at the time, including those by Charles Dickens. However, these lollipops referred to sweets in general, and not only to those on a stick, since these treats would be “popped” into the “lolly,” which was an informal term for one’s mouth or tongue.
According to the Bradley Smith Company, George Smith, a fan of horse racing, named this treat for his favorite racing horse called… Lolly Pop. Supposedly, he combined the two halves of the horse’s name and coined the word for this treat.
Shortly after patenting the term “lollipop,” the Bradley Smith Company found themselves struggling to remain in business. The era of the Great Depression had changed the face of the entire country, and luxuries like candy were no longer in demand. Sadly, the company soon went out of business, and the word lollipop lost its patent and could now be used by any confectionery.
Danger on a Stick? After many reports of injuries caused by lollipops — which occurred when children fell while sucking on one, causing the stick to shove into the palate — the Curtis Candy Company introduced the Saf-T-Pop in the early 1940s. The Saf-T-Pop boasted a rope-like flexible handle instead of a stick, which was safe for children of all ages and during all falls… This design seems like a great idea, which brings one to wonder when everyday lollipop sticks ceased being dangerous.
The Curtis Candy Company’s Saf-TPop. Note the price of the treat.

Rockland County, N.Y. – As of March 7, 2019, 15 cases of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, have been confirmed in Rockland County. A number of these cases have originated from New Square and Monsey. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory disease. It is caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Pertussis is known for uncontrollable, violent coughing which often makes it hard to breathe. After cough fits, someone with pertussis often gasps for breath, which result in a “whooping” sound. Pertussis can affect people of all ages, but can be very serious, even deadly, for babies less than a year old. The best way to protect against pertussis is by getting vaccinated.” RefuahHealth providers join the CDC in its aim to protect the most vulnerable, including newborn patients. For these little ones, pertussis can be deadly. You can protect your family and community through recommended immunizations. Protecting Against Pertussis—it’s simple. Vaccinate your infant/children– The first 3 doses of pediatric diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTaP) should be received at the age of 2, 4, and 6 months. After the first three doses, your child will have 80%-85% immunity to the disease. Two booster doses are recommended at 15 months and 4 years after which 98% of children will be immune. Another pertussis booster (Tdap) is recommended at age 11. Children who lack one dose or multiple doses of the recommended schedule experience decreased immunity to pertussis. Vaccinate yourself/household—It is especially important that parents of infants and ALL individuals (adults and children) who live with an infant or provide care to an infant are protected against pertussis. The CDC recommends that the infant’s family members and potential visitors receive a one-time dose of the adolescent/ adult tetanus-diphtheria-acellular (Tdap) vaccine if they have not already done so. Expectant women have the unique opportunity to provide protection to their babies. Administered during the last trimester, the Tdap vaccination has been shown to prevent 78% of pertussis cases in infants younger than 2 months old and 90% effective in preventing serious cases of pertussis resulting in hospitalization. As the community’s leading health care provider, Refuah Health encourages all family-household members, especially infants and young children, to be immunized against the highly contagious and dangerous disease. If you or your family member has a chronic health condition that might increase the risk of a respiratory infection, please seek advice from your health care provider. For children and individuals who are not immunized or for those who are unsure of their vaccination history, please contact your primary care provider. A DTaP provides the most effective protection against pertussis. With 5 doses, the DTaP can be 98% effective in providing immunity. Refuah is offering vaccinations at all Rockland County locations. For more information, please visit RefuahHealth.org or call 1.845.354.9300.
