Snooker CHAMPIonSHIP StAyS At tHe CruCIble

Snooker’s World Championship will remain at the Crucible in Sheffield following a landmark long term agreement between World Snooker Tour and Sheffield City Council.

The new deal will see snooker stay in Sheffield until at least 2045, with an option to extend to 2050.

Separately, plans are being developed to transform the Crucible Theatre, with the sport’s most famous venue set to benefit from a major refurbishment, including the potential to add up to 500 additional seats in an ‘in the round’ configuration, alongside other significant improvements such as enhanced

spectator facilities. The Championship will continue to be staged at the Crucible in its current design through to 2028.

During the planned redevelopment period, the event is expected to be hosted temporarily at an alternative venue before returning to a transformed Crucible.

The agreement reflects a citywide commitment, ensuring Sheffield and its partners continue to benefit from snooker’s long term future in the city.

From cultural venues such as Sheffield Theatres to sporting facilities including the English Institute of Sport, and businesses across the city centre, the deal supports ongoing economic and

reputational benefits as the sport continues to grow its global audience and profile.

Snooker’s flagship event first came to the Crucible in 1977 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary at the iconic venue next year.

The current agreement runs until 2027, and principles for a new long-term arrangement have now been agreed to secure one of the world’s greatest sporting events at its traditional home.

This year’s Halo World Championship runs from 18 April to 4 May, as the world’s top 16 players and 16 qualifiers gather to compete for a trophy first contested in 1927, alongside a top prize of £500,000. The event has a global cumulative

audience of 771 million.

Councillor Tom Hunt, Leader of Sheffield City Council said: “Sheffield loves snooker – and it’s here to stay. We’ve reached an agreement to keep the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible, the home of snooker, supporting its future in our city.”

“Snooker is part of Sheffield’s identity, and I’m incredibly proud that it will continue to be played on the world stage right here. And the ambition doesn’t stop there. Separately, plans are in place for a £45 million transformation of the Crucible, which would deliver around 50 per cent more seats and enable the venue to operate as a theatre in

the round.” This progress has been made possible through close work with the World Snooker Tour, Sheffield Theatres and Government partners. It’s a hugely proud moment for Sheffield, and we’re excited about what comes next.”

Current World Champion Zhao Xintong also said: “I am so happy because I love the Crucible, it is a very special place and all Chinese players want to play there. Sheffield has become my home in the UK and it is famous around the world as the home of snooker. I am so pleased that we are working together to keep the World Championship in the city.”

WORLD SNOOkER GREEN CARPET CEREMONY

Snooker fans in Sheffield will have the chance to see their heroes walking to the Crucible, through Tudor Square, on a special green carpet on the eve of the Halo World Championship on Friday 17 April. The world’s top 16 players will gather in the centre of Sheffield and walk from Sheffield Winter Garden to the Crucible on a carpet, which matches the colour of green baize. All fans are welcome

to line the square and they will get the chance for autographs and selfies with many of the players.

The fun will start in Tudor Square at 11am with live music. From 12.15pm, Master of Ceremonies Rob Walker will build up the atmosphere, talking to special guests including legendary players.

From 1pm to 2pm, the top 16 players will grace the green carpet, and then join together for a group photo outside the

Crucible.

After 2pm, a few of the top stars will also play frames against fans on snooker tables in the Fanzone area, outside the Crucible.

The event is part of a programme of celebratory activity to mark the World Snooker in Sheffield throughout the tournament. For more info visit: www. welcometosheffield. co.uk/snooker

Celebrating the impact of Sheffield Wednesday FC’s Active Against Cancer programme

Over the past three years, Sheffield Wednesday FC Community Programme’s (SWFCCP) Active Against Cancer initiative has provided invaluable support to local people.

SWFCCP were awarded a £21k Weston Park Cancer Charity grant in 2023, which enabled them to offer a weekly timetable of fitness classes and peer support groups.

These helped people affected by cancer to manage their physical and mental health, while forming a supportive, local network of friends.

The Active Against Cancer fitness sessions offered a tailored programme of exercise to support with prehabilitation and rehabilitation.

The programme also included a walk and talk group, and a chat and support session which allowed people to connect and share their experiences of cancer.

When surveyed, 96% of participants felt that the programme had positively impacted their physical wellbeing, and 97% said it had been positive for their sense of community.

Although the programme is coming to a close, participants can now join weekly football fitness sessions – led by ex-SWFC player Dan Pudil. There will also be walking groups and walking football sessions available for those seeking a gentler form of exercise.

83-year-old Pete, from Sheffield, said: “I went to the physical activity sessions every week. They helped me to keep my weight down, my fitness up, and to get me through my prostate cancer struggle.

“The programme really helped to make my cancer journey easier.”

Sean Graves, Health Manager at SWFCCP, said:

“I feel so proud of what we achieved through the Active Against Cancer programme.

“Over the years, attendees have told us the programme helped them to manage their symptoms and side effects. Many also formed strong bonds and friendships, which we hope will continue to flourish in the years ahead.

“We were very grateful for the Weston Park Cancer Charity grant, which enabled us to support many people in our local community.”

Grace Rawson, Head of Governance and Operations at Weston Park Cancer Charity, said:

“It’s a joy to see how much of an impact the Active Against Cancer programme made.

“Sheffield Wednesday FC also play an invaluable role in our Together at Every Step partnership –which raises money for research, support services, and hospital improvements.

“We’d like to thank the club for their ongoing support of our charity. Cancer changes everything, but together – so can we.”

Weston Park Cancer Charity provides emotional, practical, and physical support for the one in two of us who will receive a cancer diagnosis.

The charity has a comprehensive grant giving programme, which can support researchers, organisations, and community projects with cancer-focused initiatives.

magna tram station opens

South Yorkshire will mark a major milestone in April with the opening of the new Magna Tram Train station, the first additional stop to be added to the network since its launch in 2018 Opening to passengers on Thursday 9 April, the station will provide a modern and accessible gateway to the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham, one of the region’s most popular family attractions. It will also strengthen public transport links between Rotherham and Sheffield, offering quicker and more convenient connections for residents, visitors and workers. Located near to Templeborough and Tinsley, the new stop will improve access to two of South Yorkshire’s busiest employment corridors and support wider regeneration ambitions for the Don Valley Corridor. The surrounding area is home to hundreds of businesses and thousands of jobs across manufacturing, logistics, green industry, retail and hospitality. Better transport connections will support recruitment, skills development and continued investment across these fast-growing economic zones. The station has also been designed to help address long standing congestion and air quality challenges in the Lower Don Valley and along the A6178 corridor, areas that include formally designated Air Quality Management Zones. By making use of underutilised parking spaces at the Magna Science Adventure Centre, there will be 100 free Park and Ride spaces, along with cycle parking and electric vehicle charging. These facilities will encourage cleaner and more sustainable travel, ease pressure around Junction 34 of the M1 and improve local connectivity.

Although built on heavy rail infrastructure, the station has been designed to offer the accessible and passenger friendly environment expected of the Tram Train network. The station includes fully accessible platforms, a new pedestrian overbridge and step free access via lifts. These improvements will enable people with reduced mobility to travel confidently between Rotherham and Sheffield.

Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “The opening of

Magna station is a proud moment for South Yorkshire, showing the progress we’re making as we build the South Yorkshire People’s Network. I can’t wait to welcome passengers at Magna when the Tram Train services start next month. This is exactly what taking back control of our public transport looks like; us building the future.” Sean English of Supertram said: “Magna is an important addition to the Tram Train network, and we are excited to connect passengers to this fantastic venue and its events. Our colleagues, including trained drivers, are ready to serve this stop, and we thank everyone involved in the project. The new Park and Ride facility also offers great opportunities for people travelling between Rotherham and Sheffield.” Cllr Chris Read of Rotherham Council, said: “It’s great that the new Tram Train stop is now in sight. Rotherham residents and people across the region will benefit from better, greener transport, improving access to jobs in the Templeborough area and beyond. And of course it fits into the bigger plan for the Don Valley Corridor between Rotherham and Sheffield; more jobs, more investment, and a transport system that supports it all. The proposed Templeborough Business Zone, which will be within a short walk of this stop, will be an early beneficiary. Magna is also two short stops from Rotherham’s proposed Gateway station, which will connect businesses and residents in the Templeborough area to mainline rail services in the next few years. It’s a welcome boost, and we’re glad to have worked with partners to get it over the line.” Alongside the opening of the new station at Magna, South Yorkshire is also exploring how the tram network could expand in the future. The £10.1 million Magna Tram Train station is being delivered by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) in partnership with Network Rail and Supertram, with funding from the UK Government’s Transforming Cities Fund.

nhs easter opening advice

With the Easter bank holidays approaching, the NHS is reminding people to get prepared, as services are expected to be busy. Most GP practices and some pharmacies will close or may have different opening hours. Hospitals across the country continue to be busy but by planning ahead you’ll help keep services available for those who need them most.

There are two bank holidays coming up: Good Friday on 3 April and Easter Monday on 6 April. During these bank holidays appointments with GPs and other healthcare professionals will still be available for urgent issues but this may not be at your usual GP practice. Appointments must be pre-booked by calling your own GP practice or by using NHS 111 online or calling 111. It’s important to check your prescription medication and ensure you have enough to last over the bank holiday period. If you need to order more, request your repeat prescriptions and collect them in plenty of time. You can do this via the NHS App or find guidance on how to order a repeat prescription on the NHS website. If you urgently need medication when your GP or pharmacy is closed, there’s information about how you can get medicines out of hours on the NHS website. For most people, common illnesses such as colds, flu, COVID-19 and norovirus will get better on their own with plenty of rest and fluids at home. You can take over the counter medication like paracetamol and cold and flu tablets to ease your symptoms. In some cases, people may experience more serious symptoms and should

visit NHS 111 online or call 111 for advice. Don’t get caught out over the bank holiday if you do feel unwell. Make sure your medicine cabinet is well stocked with antiseptic cream, paracetamol, ibuprofen and rehydration solutions. If you have young children, consider anything specific they might need too, such as a thermometer and a liquid form of paracetamol.

For some, bank holidays can be particularly challenging for their mental health. Don’t wait until you’re in a mental health crisis to seek support. You can now be signposted to relevant mental health services via NHS 111 online or by calling 111, or find more information at Mental health - NHS - Together We Can. If you can, check in on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbours who may be feeling isolated. Remember, if your condition is life or limb threatening, call 999 immediately or visit your local Emergency Department (A&E).

Dr James Thomas, GP said: “NHS staff will be working incredibly hard over the bank holiday period, with many giving up time with their families to care for others. You can help ease the pressure on our services and staff by being prepared, particularly by ordering any prescriptions you may need in advance. If you need urgent medical help during the bank holidays, the NHS is here for you. But if it’s not an emergency, I’d advise using NHS 111 online or calling 111 first to make sure you find the right service and keep our emergency services free for those who need them most.”

nuisance parking tackled

Action has been taken to tackle long standing road, pavement and parking hazards on Holywell Road in Grimesthorpe.

Following repeated reports from residents and councillors about risks to pedestrians and motorists, a joint operation led by Sheffield City Council and supported by South Yorkshire Police removed dangerous and abandoned vehicles that had been blighting this area for years.

Previous enforcement action by the Council, the Health and Safety Executive, South Yorkshire Police and the DVLA has taken place in the past, but problems have continued.

The operation focused on vehicles left outside Brightside Motors in a severely damaged or unsafe state, many of which had been stored on the public footpath, blocking access to bus stops and forcing pedestrians into the road. These vehicles also posed a hazard to passing drivers. Officers removed them and installed permanent measures to prevent any further obstruction.

In the days leading up to the operation, South Yorkshire Police and the DVLA also

targeted untaxed and unroadworthy vehicles on surrounding residential streets. This coordinated, multi agency approach reflects Sheffield City Council’s wider work to tackle complex street scene issues. Recent operations in Attercliffe, Darnall and Gleadless have involved the Council, enforcement agencies and local communities working together to address problems such as fly tipping, graffiti and vehicle related nuisance.

Cllr Mark Rusling noted: “Businesses that have a negative impact on their local communities by leaving dangerous, untaxed and unroadworthy vehicles on the public highway need to stop. Further action will take place in the coming weeks. Cars that are abandoned, unroadworthy or untaxed will be removed. We work on behalf of residents who get fed up with anti-social behaviour and with our partners we identify and tackle complex long-standing issues like this one across the city. The safety of local communities, pedestrians and drivers is vital so we will continue to take action against irresponsible businesses that blight our communities.”

alzheimer’s advice for bst

As British Summer Time begins, Alzheimer’s Society is encouraging people to check in on loved ones, friends and neighbours living with dementia ahead of the upcoming clock change. With almost one million people living with dementia in the UK today, changes in routine can be unsettling. Seasonal shifts, including the clocks going forward on 29 March, may cause confusion and disruption – particularly when people lose an hour and daily patterns change.

Angelo Makri, Senior Knowledge Officer for Wellbeing at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “For most people, the clocks changing doesn’t have much of an impact at all – although having to work out how to reset the clock on the oven and in the car is nobody’s idea of fun. While it is often only a minor nuisance for most people, for those living with dementia it can disrupt their body clock and cause confusion and anxiety. We want everyone affected by dementia to know that whoever you are, whatever you’re going through, you can turn to Alzheimer’s Society for practical advice, emotional support, and guidance for the next step.”

Clock change advice –29 March

As the days grow longer and brighter, people across the UK will be preparing to lose an hour. While this happens every year, it can still affect sleep and routines. For people with dementia, even small disruptions can have a significant impact on their wellbeing.

Here are four top tips from Alzheimer’s Society to help manage the transition:

First established in 1865, Eric Eyre has personally looked after families in the local communities of Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham since 1955.

Operating from branches in High Green and Sheffield Lane Top we offer a bespoke funeral service upholding traditional values whilst progressing to cater for modern, personalised customer requirements.

A selection of the services we provide: • Professional and sympathetic funeral arrangements in our office or in the comfort of your own home

1) Adjust bedtime the night before

Think about having your evening meal and going to bed an hour earlier on Saturday, so the person can still get their usual amount of sleep and wake at their normal time on Sunday. This way, the routine is only different for one evening rather than a full day.

2) Use visual aids to support orientation Visual tools can help someone with dementia identify the start and end of the day. Alzheimer’s Society’s online shop offers ‘Day and Night’ clocks with clear visual symbols to help distinguish the time of day.

3) Stay active and use light to support sleep

Going outside and getting gentle exercise can help the person feel sleepier in the evening. If going outside isn’t possible, keeping active indoors can have a similar effect. Blackout curtains can also help reduce evening light and support sleep.

4) Keep a consistent daily routine Regular activities at the same time each day –such as going for a walk after breakfast – can help regulate a disrupted body clock and make it easier to understand the time. Devices that provide reminders can also support daily routines. Alzheimer’s Society also offers a range of products and support services to help people affected by dementia maintain independence and manage daily life. Every action, whether it’s checking in on a neighbour, donating or supporting research, adds up. Please get involved by visiting alzheimersociety. org.uk/joinus or call the Dementia Support Line on 0333 150 3456.

Rock N Roll Circus has unveiled its full 2026 Sheffield line-up, adding a huge wave of new artists across all four days - led by the return of Babyshambles, the cult band fronted by Peter Doherty, alongside UK rap’s enigmatic force Casisdead, fast-rising indie favourites The Clause and one of the most talked-about new bands in the UK right now, Gurriers. The announcement completes one of the most ambitious line-ups the festival has delivered to date, blending iconic names, landmark album performances and a new generation of artists stepping onto one of the North’s most exciting stages - alongside performances from The Kooks, Milburn and Miles Kane on a huge opening night. Leading the latest additions to join The Streets on Friday 28 August is Babyshambles. Fronted by Peter Doherty, the band remain one of the most influential and

unpredictable forces in British indie.

Their appearance also marks a return to Rock N Roll Circus for Doherty, who previously performed with The Libertines at the festival’s Newcastle debut in 2022, before delivering a special acoustic set alongside Carl Barât in Sheffield in 2025.

Peter Doherty said: “There’s something about Rock N Roll Circus that sticks with you. It’s not just the music, it’s the whole world they build around it. We’ve had some brilliant moments there before, so bringing Babyshambles into that tent feels like coming back to something special.”

Sheffield native Jon McClure, of last year’s Rock N Roll Circus headliner Reverend and The Makers said: “This city’s always had it - the bands, the people, the culturebut we’ve never been the loudest about it. We’ve let other cities bang

the drum while we’ve just got on with making great music. Rock N Roll Circus is Sheffield stepping up and saying: this is who we are.”

They are joined on Friday by Casisdead, whose cinematic, dystopian sound has made him one of the most distinctive voices in UK rap, alongside genre-blurring songwriter Hak Baker, rising alternative artist KhakiKid, and Sheffield’s own Ellur. Across the weekend, Rock N Roll Circus continues its commitment to championing new talent - including a new wave of artists with deep musical lineage.

Thursday 27 August sees the addition of Spanish Horses, the emerging indie band featuring guitarist Albert Cocker, son of Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, bringing a modern take on classic British guitar music.

They are joined by Cruz Beckham and The Breakers, in what is the

artist’s first festival announcement of the year. As the son of David and Victoria Beckham, he’ll be stepping onto the stage with his own Britpop-inspired band, marking a high-profile moment for a new generation of artists carving out their own identity.

Also joining Thursday are fastrising indie band The Clause, hotly tipped newcomers Fletchr Fletchr and Australian indie surf-rock outfit Day We Ran, whose sun-drenched sound and coastal aesthetic bring a fresh dynamic to the opening night.

The next generation continues into Sunday, with Villanelle, fronted by Gene Gallagher, reinforcing the festival’s thread of musical heritage across the bill. From landmark album performances to defining British artists, Rock N Roll Circus Sheffield 2026 brings together multiple generations of guitar music under one roof.

Friday night sees The Streets perform A Grand Don’t Come For Free in full, while Saturday is headlined by Wunderhorse, one of the most exciting bands in modern British guitar music. The day is further bolstered by a wave of fastrising names including Gurriers, Basht. and The Molotovs, three of the most talked-about bands on the live circuit right now, adding serious depth to an already stacked bill.

Sunday closes with Richard Ashcroft, supported by The Fratellis, Cast - fresh from their international tour with Oasis - and now Embrace, bringing together a powerhouse line-up of eradefining British bands. Sheffield favourites Everly Pregnant Brothers also join the bill, adding a unique hometown flavour to a huge closing day.

Rock N Roll Circus continues to stand apart by blending world-

class live music with immersive circus and theatrical performance across the site. From aerialists and fire performers to roaming spectacle, the experience extends far beyond the main stage. All headline performances take place inside the festival’s iconic Big Top, creating an intimate, highenergy atmosphere while ensuring shows remain weather-proof. VIP upgrades are available, offering fast-track entry, premium viewing areas, private bars, upgraded food options and dedicated seating. With the full line-up now revealed, Rock N Roll Circus Sheffield 2026 is set to deliver one of the most exciting Bank Holiday weekends anywhere in the UK.

Rock N Roll Circus Sheffield takes place at Don Valley Bowl from Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 August 2026. Tickets & info: rocknrollcircus.co.uk

A ROyAL SEAL OF APPROvAL!

For Sheffield

Wednesday Community Programme’s Youth and Integration Officer

Molly Bulmer, the bar for bravery is as high as it gets.

On 1 May 2024, Molly and school receptionist

Alicia Richards intervened at Birley Academy when a former student attacked pupils with a shard of glass. Molly was present in her then role of Youth Mentor for the Community Programme, supporting young people at risk of exclusion and helping

them re-engage with education and positive pathways.

Together with Alicia, Molly’s selfless actions undoubtedly prevented serious harm to a number of children.

Now, having already been recognised with a Certificate of Commendation, Molly was this week awarded the King’s Commendation for Bravery by King Charles III in a Buckingham Palace ceremony.

Marcus Brameld, Head of Community at Sheffield

Wednesday, said:

“This is such an honour and so thoroughly deserved. We are all hugely proud of Molly in every way.

“Molly has always been an outstanding member of the community team. Her passion, commitment and resilience is truly inspiring.

“She’s an inspiration not only to our team but also to the participants on the many fantastic projects she works on.”

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer commented at the 10 Downing Street

Gallantry Awards:

“This is what true courage looks like. In moments of unimaginable danger, these extraordinary people acted with selflessness and bravery that speaks to the very

nation. We

of them - and their familiesour deepest thanks. Their actions remind us of the strength and compassion that run through our communities.”

MiLLERS AnnOUnCE hUMMEL AS Kit PARtnER

A new era in technical partnership begins for Rotherham United ahead of the 2026/27 season, as the club welcomes hummel as its Official Kit Partner.

From this summer’s pre-season onwards, the Millers look will be reimagined by the globally recognised sportswear brand, who

MCCAnn LAUdS ‘EXCELLEnt’ tURnAROUnd in FORM

Grant McCann praised the ‘excellent’ turnaround in Rovers’ form since the turn of the year which continued with the win over Port Vale. Rovers have won eight of 16 league matches in 2026 and drawn a further four, having lost 13 of the previous 16 games. And McCann is determined for the group to maintain their calendar year form over the final seven matches of the season in order to climb the table as high as possible.

“It’s been a massive shift

from the boys, really from New Year’s day,” McCann said. “The turnaround in form and results have been excellent.

“We’re level with 12th in the division and it just shows how quickly things can change in the league.

“It’s a fantastic period for us. The boys have stuck to their beliefs and their guns.

“We’ve had a couple of heavy defeats in there, against Wycombe and Cardiff, but barring those two results we’ve been in every single game.

LA PLATA S.C.

“We’ve been really good since New Year’s Day and we just want to carry it on for the last seven games.

“We’ll not think about it too soon. We’ll recover the players and they’ll get a couple of days to rest and recuperate before we get cracking again for the Mansfield game on Good Friday.”

ORCHARD PARK

have signed a minimum five-year agreement with the club, securing full exclusivity across all teamwear and trainingwear ranges. Hummel’s impressive client base on English shores includes Premier League Sunderland and Coventry City of the Sky Bet Championship – both of whom have received high praise for the eye-catching designs that have been produced in their colours in recent campaigns – while, perhaps most famously, the Danish national team headline the brand’s portfolio alongside clubs including Werder Bremen and FC Koln in Germany and

Spanish outfit Real Betis.

After the Millers long and successful affiliation with Puma Teamwear came to an end, the club were keen to secure a partner with similar levels of prestige at both club and international level within the sport and are confident that they have delivered on that in this new agreement with Hummel.

Millers fans will not have long to wait to see hummel’s first take on the red and white of their football club with the 2026/27 season kit already in production and awaiting the official release of the new designs as the season nears it’s close.

Rotherham United Commercial Director

Steve Coakley, said:

“We absolutely delighted to welcome Hummel as the club’s Technical Kit Partner. Hummel is a true football heritage brand and have provided some of the most iconic kits in world football over the decades and I am absolutely convinced that we’ll be able to look back in years to come to also add some more within that unique collection from our own selection of kits. In addition to the reputation of delivering renowned designs and high quality attire, during our discussions it’s clear we’ll also be the benefactor of a first-class

service, placing a keen emphasis on a clubfocused, collaborative approach which was always a priority when making such a important choice of a Technical Kit Partner. This is an exciting opportunity and one which will reinvigorate the look and feel of the football club both on matchdays and throughout the week at Roundwood.

“We are aware that a number of our supporters have been long-term admirers of Hummel and the eye-catching kits that they have supplied to clubs elsewhere within the EPL, EFL as well as up in Scotland. We’re already excited to see the undoubted creativity and expertise incorporated into future Millers kits.”
