Didyouhearthatwehave plantedmorethantwo hundrednewtreesatGreenway?In February,thankstoourwonderful partnersForestofAvonTrust,thereis nowamini-woodlandrunningbetween GreenwayandBadock’sWoodschool, crea�ngawildlifecorridorwith Badock’sWoodNatureReservetogive safepassagetowildlifeinSouthmead.

Hugethankstoourlocalvolunteers whocamealongtodigin,getmuddy, andmakethedayagreatcommunity event.Theybravedthedrizzletospade theholes,hammerinstakes,pressin thenewtrees,andplacetreeguards

aroundthemtogivethemthebest start.Accompaniedbyhotcupsoftea ofcourse!

Wewerealsojoinedbychildren fromtheRaisedInBristolon-site nurseryatGreenway.Itwassuchajoy toseetheircuriosity,especiallyforthe wormswefoundwhichweeven wishedgoodluckasweputthemback inthesoil!

Plan�ngatreecanbeapowerful actofhope,oneinwhichusordinary peoplecancreatelas�ngimpactand makeacommitmenttoourfuture.We hopeithelpswildlifegetameal,make anest,orraisetheiryoungamongst thetreebranches.Wecanwonder whowillenjoytheshadeofthetree weplantedinten,fi�y,orahundred

Treescangiveus humanssomuch.They protectoursoils,take carbonoutofthe atmosphere,keepus cool,reducethe impactofflooding, andimproveour healthandwellbeing. TheWoodlandTrust ac�velycampaignsforgreater accesstowoodlandsasahealthcare tool.Peoplecanevenrecoverbe�er fromillnessandsurgerywhenthey canseetreesfromtheirwindow.In fact,forevery£1spentontrees,the UKsaves£7onhealthcare,energy, andenvironmentalcosts.Despite thesebenefits,theUKhassomeofthe lowesttreecoverageinEurope,but wewouldliketokeepongrowingin Southmead.Thisnewminiwoodland willhelp.

Ourgoalisto extendthewoodland habitat,crea�nga wildlifecorridoralongthe boundarywithBadock’s Woodprimaryschool,socri�ershave moresafeareasforshelterandfood.

So,thissmallbutmightywoodland areaisoneofGreenway’s contribu�onstoagreener,more wildlifefriendlyworld,andwehope thatgenera�onsofSouthmead residentscanenjoyitgoingforwards.

TheOldYouthCentreBuilding

Weareo�enaskedwhatis happeningwiththe buildingthatusedtobeSouthmead YouthCentre.Somenewerresidents maynotbeawarethatyouth servicesinSouthmeadarerunbyus atTheRanchonDoncasterRoad.A fewyearsagoallyouthsessions movedhere,meaningtheold buildingonArnsideisnolonger opera�ngasSouthmeadYouth Centre.

Previously,theTrustleasedthe oldYouthCentrebuildingfrom BristolCityCouncil.Weranevening sessionsforyoungpeoplethere, alongsideotheryouthorganisa�ons whohiredpartsofthebuilding.

However,aspartofawider regenera�onplanforthearea,the Councilrequiredustovacatethe buildingin2022.Theysupportedus tomakeimprovementsatTheRanch soitcouldbecomenotonlya fantas�cspaceforyoungerchildren, butalsoadedicatedcentreforour youthsessions.

Wesuccessfullytransferredall youthservicestoTheRanchand havecon�nuedrunningsessions thereeversince.Youmayhave no�cedthatwenowrefertothesite as‘TheRanchAdventurePlayground andYouthSpace’-thishelpsto makeitclearthatitisaplacewhere youngpeoplecancon�nuetogrow, learnandsocialiseoncetheyturn11 (fromschoolyear7)andmoveon fromplaysessions.

YouthSceneThrivingatTheRanch

ChildrenandYoungPeople’sServices Manager,SouthmeadDevTrust

Somethingexci�ngis happeninginSouthmead. Overthepastfewyears,wehave transformedTheRanchintoabusy andwelcomingspaceforyoung people,andthenumbersspeakfor themselves.Withmorethan60 youngpeoplecomingthroughthe doorsonmanyevenings,theyouth sessionsarebuzzingwithenergy, crea�vity,andcommunityspirit.

EveryWednesdayandFriday, oncetheyoungerchildrenhave headedhome,weshi�gearatThe Ranch.Thelightsdim,themusic rises,andyoungpeoplefromschool years7to11takeover.Thereisno pressuretoa�endregularly-some comeeveryweek,othersdrop-in whentheyneedaplacetounwind.

Insidetheop�onsareendless. Youngpeoplecooktogether,make beatsinthemusicstudio,play football,shootpool,tryboxing,or getinvolvedinhairandbeauty workshops.Theac�vi�esma�er,but

theatmospherema�ersmore.Our amazingyouthteamoffersomething increasinglyrare-asafe,relaxedspace whereyoungpeoplecanbe themselvesandtalkopenlywithyouth workerswhogenuinelycare.

Mondaysbringadifferentkindof support.Weworkwiththoseaged 16+tonavigatetheirnextstepswhetherthatiscollege, appren�ceships,training, volunteering,orfindingwork.Itis prac�cal,pa�entguidanceata�me whenmanyyoungpeopleneedit most.

Alongsidetheopensessions,we alsoprovidetargetedsupportfor thosefacingbiggerchallenges.From

wellbeinghelptocrime-preven�on work,theteamatTheRanchis commi�edtobeingthereforyoung peoplewithanylevelofneed.

TheGovernmenthasapproved fundingforanewschoolfor childrenwithaddi�onalneedstobe builtinSouthmead.ThenewTrym ValleyAcademy,asitwillbecalled, willbebuiltonGreystokeAvenueon theformersiteofElmfieldSchoolfor DeafChildren,whichhasalready relocatedtoHorfield.

Thisfantas�cnewsaddstoBristol NorthWest’srichheritageofschools thatprovidesupportforchildren withaddi�onalneeds,including beinghometooneofthefirst schoolsforblindchildren.

Iamdelightedfundinghasbeen securedforthisnewstate-of-the-art schoolinourareatohelpchildren withawiderangeofaddi�onalneeds tothrive.

Thisannouncementispartofa landmark£3billioninvestmentby theGovernmenttocreatetensof thousandsofspecialistplacesin mainstreamschools,alongside bespokefacili�es–likethisnew schoolinSouthmead–toenable childrenwithaddi�onalneedstogo toaschoolclosetohome.

Thepurpose-builtschoolwill offerspecialisteduca�onfor164 pupilsaged4to19years,witha rangeofaddi�onalneedssuchas: Au�smSpectrumDisorder(ASD); Social,Emo�onal,andMentalHealth (SEMH)needs;SevereLearning Difficul�es(SLD);andCogni�onand Learning(CandL)needs.

Thenewschoolwillalsobea communityassetforSouthmead, withmodernindoorandoutdoor facili�esthatwillbeavailabletothe widercommunityoutsideofschool hours.

ThankHeavensforTechyTeaParty!

Ourcommunityisoneofthe leastdigitallyconnectedin theCity,whichiswhyofferingTechy TeaPartyacrossthreeloca�onsin Southmeadisessen�altomaking sureno-onegetsle�behind.Techy TeaPartyisweeklyatGreenway CentreandatSouthmeadLibrary, andmonthlyatStStephen’sChurch.

AtGreenwaywehaveloved mee�ngPeterwhowantedhelpwith hisphone.Heis83andnowlives alone,andalthoughheworkedin graphicshehasnotgrownupwith computers.

Peterwasnotsurehowtoscan QRcodesorsetupWhatsApp groupsonhisphone.Hehad googledhowtodoitbutneeded guidancetounderstandthe terminology.Healsodidnotknow wheretofindhisphotosofthe wonderfulpain�ngsheproduces. PhotosarealsoimportanttoPeter sohecanaddthemtoda�ngapps.

Withhelpfromourvolunteers Peterisnowabletoconfidently navigatewhatheneedstodoonhis phone.Wecannotwaittoseehim againsoourvolunteerscansupport himwithwhatisnextonhisdigital to-dolist.

Aregularvisitorwelovetoseeis Stella–shebringsherdigitalto-do listwithher.Shesaid,“Icomeevery week,I’macompleteidiot!Igotwo stepsforwardandonestepback.I gethelpwithemailsandusingmy phone,thingslikemanagingapps andstorage”.Wecompletely disagreewithStellathatsheisan idiot–she,likemanyofourvisitors, justappreciatesbeingabletotake her�metolearnalongsideourteam ofpa�entandknowledgeable volunteers.Stellaisnowstar�ngto feelmoreconfidentaboutgiving thingsago.

Wehavealsobeenhelping Bryan,whosaidhewas,“desperate forhelp,frustratedwithtechnology –it’smakinglifepainful!”.Our volunteershelpedBryantousehis NHSappandtoapplyforgarden wastecollec�onfromtheCouncil.

IthinkPetersummeditupso nicelywhenhesaid,“Ididn’tknow thingslikethisexisted,Isawanad whencomingtoGreenwaySingers, andTai-Chi.Thankheavensforthis place”.

Sodospreadthewordthatwe wantpeopletosharetheirtechy issueswithus.Andjoinusforacuppa atGreenwayorStStephen’sChurch sessions(therearecafésverycloseto SouthmeadLibraryifyoua�endthe sessionthere).

Itishardtobelieveourvery ownSouthmeadRepairCafeis goingtocelebrateitsfirstbirthdaythis month,andwhatayearithasbeen! Haveyouvisiteduswithabrokenitem andle�withitrenewedandreadyto goagain?

Wehavelovedseeingwhatyou havebroughtit,everythingfroma Pokemononesie,chainsaw,wooden chair,brokenbikeandagokart!

Ifyouhavenotyetpoppedin,you mightbewonderingwhataRepair Caféis.Itiswhereateamofskilled volunteerrepairershelpfixyour brokenitemsonadona�onbasis, fromdarningholeyjumpers,fixing electronicgadgets,unblocking hoovers, andsharpeningsecateurs.

Sincewestarted,ourwonderful teamofvolunteerwelcomershave registered170items,andourskilled repairershavefixed83items.We havealsoofferedadvicetomany peopleaboutotherplacestogethelp withmorecomplexrepairs.Thereare lotsofRepairCafésinBristolandwe arepartofthenetwork;different Caféshavevolunteerswithdifferent

skills,sothereisalwayssomewhere elsetotryifwecannotfixithere.

ComeandjoinusonSaturday28th MarchaspartoftheSpringSuper SaturdayatGreenwayCentre (12-3pm).Helpustocelebratea brilliantfirstyearbybringing somethingalongthatyouwouldlike

SoberWolf at Greenway

Ithasbeenanexci�ngsixmonths forHorizonsDrugandAlcohol ServiceatGreenwayCentre.

InAugust,westartedSoberWolf. Thisisanewboxingfitnessclass designedforpeopleinrecovery.Our instructor,RichDonlan,runsthe sessionsintheBoxingZone.Hehelps a�endeesbuildahealthyhabitof regularexerciseinsessionsthatare friendlyandsuppor�ve.Whetheryou areanexperiencedboxeroratotal beginner,everyoneiswelcome.

Iwasluckyenoughtoa�endthe firstclassthatRichledatGreenway.I le�feelinginspiredbythewarmthand energyintheroomthatevening. SoberWolfhelpspeoplelearn importantskillslikedisciplineand commitment,butitisalsoabout havingfun.

MonthlyFreeTestsforSTIsandHIV

Wearereallyhappytohave partneredwithSouthmead DevelopmentTrusttolauncha monthlydrop-intestsessionfor SexuallyTransmi�edInfec�ons(STIs) andHumanImmunodeficiencyVirus (HIV).

WewillbeatGreenwayCentreon thesecondThursdayofeverymonth between12-3pm.Welovebeingat Greenway,anditissogreatthatwe wereabletolaunchthisserviceaspart oftheNa�onalHIVTes�ngWeek programmeinFebruary.

Itisimportanttogettested regularlyasitistheonlywaytoknow yoursexualhealthstatus,which protectsyouandyourpartners.HIV andmanySTIsdonotalwaysshow symptoms,sowai�ngun�lsomething happensisnotalwaysenough.

Oneofmyfavouritepartsofmy jobiscomingoutintothecommunity andhelpingpeoplefeellessanxious abouttheirbodiesandaboutsexual health.SoIhopethatpeoplefeel

comfortableenoughtocomeandask foradviceandgetfreecondomstoo.

AtourlaunchIwasdelightedthat DarrenJonesMP(picturedbelow) cametolendhissupporttothenew service.HejoinedstaffattheTrust, includingChiefExecAmyKinnear (picturedbelow),alongwith residents,toexperiencehoweasy havingatestis;itisasmalland simplebloodsampletakenfroma

fingerwithsomeimmediateresults ifwanted.

NeighboursConnect Southmead?Weareoneofthefew befriendingservicesinNorthBristolto offerhomevisits.Wehaveateamof fantas�cvolunteerswhodedicate�me tovisi�ngpeoplewhomightbealone, offeringmuchneededcompanionship, andgoingoutandaboutwiththem.

Oneofourpar�cipantshaslivedin Southmeadformorethanthirtyyears andsayssheisa‘Meader’through andthrough.Herlifehadbeenpre�y hardbeforeconnec�ngwithus,she toldus:

“Iusedtogooutalot,Ilove talkingtopeople,I'mareal cha�erbox!IwishIcoulds�llgoout likeIusedto,butIcan'tanymoreon myownduetomyhealth.Lifehas changedalotsinceI'vemetmyNCS volunteer.Wehavegreatdebates aboutpoli�cs,lifeandeverything really!She'sareallylovelyperson. We'vealsobeenouttothelocalcafe foracuppawhichislovely.It'ssogood tohavethecompany.WithoutherI wouldbeveryisolated.Mydaughter andcarershelp,butitisgoodtohave afriend.Ilookforwardtomy volunteercomingtovisitme.I'mnot soisolated”.
