WH AT IS A PASSOVER SEDER? This meal celebrates the beginning of the Passover week. It occurs in the spring on the 15th day of the Hebrew month Nisan, around March or April. This holiday celebrates the liberation of the Israelites during the Exodus. A seder will last about four hours. Because the evening is so long, there are ways for the children to be actively involved. The youngest child who can read Hebrew is supposed to read the four questions: questions about why this night is different from every other night. The general structure of the night includes forty-five minutes to an hour of prayers before the meal, the Passover feast itself, and further blessings and songs after the meal.

JEWISH BACKGROUND Gratefully supported by
ASHKENAZI JEWS – means “German” in Hebrew. This line of Jewish people traces their heritage back to Eastern Europe. They speak Yiddish as their common, everyday language. Yiddish is a German dialect written in Hebrew characters. The Jewish family featured in Beau Jest most likely would have come from this line of Judaism. SEPHARDIC JEWS – means “Spanish” in Hebrew. This line of Jewish people traces their heritage back to Portugal, Spain, North Africa and the Middle East.
PASSOVER BLESSINGS AND TERMS THE BLESSING FOR LIGHTING SHABBAT CANDLES – Baruch atah, Ha-Shem Elokenu, melech ha-olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav, v’tzivanu l’hadlik ner shel shabbat: Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us to kindle the light of the holy shabbat.
THE BLESSING FOR BREAD – Baruch atah Ha-Shem Elokenu melech ha-olam ha-motzi lehem min ha-aretz: Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the World, who brings forth bread from the earth.

AFIKOMEN – A piece broken off of the matzah during the seder and put aside to be eaten at the end of the meal. Traditionally it is hidden during the seder and searched for by the children.

PASSOVER BLESSINGS AND TERMS DAYENU – Ilu hotzianu mi mitzrayim, dayenu: If God had only taken us out of Egypt, that would have been enough! “Dayenu” approximately means “It would have been enough for us.” The song lists all the wonderful acts God performed for the Israelites when they left Egypt.

Arianna is a music major at TMU and she has fallen in love with storytelling. Theatre at Master’s has given her an unmatched opportunity to work on, with friends and mentors, putting together an excellent and enjoyable show. Arianna enjoys crafting, singing, and being challenged to grow alongside other believers in what she loves (in this case, THE THEATRE!).

SCENIC DESIGNER
Heather is a Los Angeles based scenic designer and carpenter. Originally aspiring to work in the special effects industry, she came to The Master’s University and studied Cinema & Digital Arts. During her time at TMU, Heather joined the theatre arts program and worked on a total of eight productions, where she learned lighting and scenic design. Since graduation in 2019, Heather was the production designer on her first feature film and has continued designing stage productions at the community theatre level. She is currently working as a carpenter for a scene shop in Burbank, CA. She hopes to continue growing her skills by attending graduate school for an MFA in Scene Design in the near future. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. — Romans 5:19-21
STEVEN INABNIT
TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
Born in Alaska and raised in Atlanta, Steven grew up on a tour bus. A lighting designer by trade and a musician at heart, the juxtaposition of the technical and the artistic enthralls him. Steven was drawn to creating and designing shows from a young age. After several failed attempts to stage shows in his living room – to the detriment of his mother’s lamps – Steven delved into lighting his freshman year of high school. Shortly thereafter, he became employed in the production industry where he continued to hone his skills as a production designer and technical director. He studied music composition at The Master’s University where he was entrenched in productions on campus including several TMU Theatre Arts shows. He has worked on all manner of projects ranging from music videos and film shoots, to theatrical shows and corporate events. In his staff role at TMU, he follows his passion of integrating the technical and the artistic to craft unique and profound experiences for audiences of all ages. For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. — Psalm 62:1-2

Seth moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the film industry and attend The Master’s University, where he earned a B.A. degree in Communication. Some of his recent credits as an actor include a lead role in a feature film opposite Nick Searcy and a supporting role in a feature film produced by Universal. Seth also works full-time as a stunt performer and camera operator on various productions that include television shows, commercials, and music videos. Seth performed in two productions with TMU Theatre Arts while a student: Nick Cristano in the Fall 2017 revival production of “Over the River and Through the Woods,” and Henry Tilney in “Northanger Abbey.” Now as an assistant director, he is thankful for the opportunity to give back to the current students what he has learned through this program and his time in the industry. He enjoys working in this capacity alongside the cast and crew to display God’s glory both on and off the stage. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. — Psalm 16:11
TRICIA HULET
DIRECTOR OF TMU THEATRE ARTS
Tricia received her M.A. and B.A. degrees from The Master’s College in Biblical Counseling and is an ACBC certified counselor. While at TMC, she minored in Music, studied Voice, and was extensively involved in musical theatre. She has performed in over a dozen plays and musicals, including the leading roles of Hodel in “Fiddler on the Roof” and Mary Lennox in “The Secret Garden.” Tricia first began directing theatre in 2004 for a Christian high school before reviving the theatre arts program at Master’s in 2008. She has directed and produced more than twenty full-length plays and musicals and dozens of concerts and events. Through her lifelong experience in the arts, theological training in understanding human nature, and a commitment to the sufficiency and authority of Scripture, the Lord has given her a passion to pursue excellent storytelling and develop a biblical worldview of the performing arts. Helping students learn and own this philosophy is life-giving. Tricia and her husband, Dave, met at TMC as students, and they count it a joy to have served together in ministry since 2002. To the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. — Jude 25
TMU Theatre Arts is a co-curricular program designed to give training and expression in the performing arts alongside any major at the University. TMU Theatre Arts has been dubbed “The People’s Theatre� as its participants and contributors span across all disciplines, dorms, and interests at TMU. As a co-curricular program, any participating students can receive repeating credits in either Theatre Arts or Theatre Production, and this will be reflected on their transcripts. Since the program revival in 2008, TMU Theatre Arts continues to be an amazing tool in the hands of the Lord in so many lives. Students are being trained in a biblical philosophy of the performing arts while also learning and gaining experience in the craft of acting and/or the many aspects of production. Our commitment to the process as much as the product enables us to have an others-focused theatre department. This pervades all these areas as we strive together to serve using our varied giftedness. Many of our graduates have continued into jobs in the arts industry or teaching and we love seeing how they are able to use their giftedness and be a gospel witness. We continually see how the Lord uses theatre to show how even a school play can be eternally significant. Lives are being changed, theology of art is being developed, attitudes & perspectives altered, and love for the Lord and for each other keeps growing. Opportunities to be involved include acting, stage managing, lighting, sound, production design, video production & social media marketing, costuming, makeup, hospitality & cast services, set building and stage crew. We are excited to see how God continues to grow the program as those involved seek to serve and honor Him first and foremost through the medium of good theatre as a gift to the audience with no compromise of who we are as children of God.
