BoatUS Awards Grady-White Boat to Ohio Family in 60th Anniversary Sweepstakes Nicholas Braun of Vandalia, Ohio, takes home the grand prize out of more than 165,000 entries

PRINGFIELD, Va. – August 18, 2026 – BoatUS, the nation’s largest advocacy, services and safety organization for recreational boaters, today named Nicholas Braun of Vandalia, Ohio, the grand prize winner of its 60th Anniversary Sweepstakes, awarding him a Grady-White Freedom 215 boat, sponsored by GEICO to help continue a family tradition of making memories on the water. Launched in April to commemorate BoatUS’ 60th anniversary, the nationwide sweepstakes drew more than 165,000 entries from across the country, celebrating six decades of helping make recreational boating safer, more accessible and more affordable. For Braun, the prize represents far more than a new boat. His wife Megan’s family has gathered for generations at their lake house on Kentucky’s Lake Cumberland, where the new GradyWhite will be kept. Now, the high school sweethearts and their two young children, ages 5 and 3, are continuing that tradition while creating new memories of their own. “It was pure disbelief. Even now, it still feels unreal,” said Braun, referring to the moment he realized he was the giveaway winner. “When I told my wife, her first reaction was, ‘Are you serious, or are you messing with me?’ It took some time for the news to sink in, but it’s been exciting to know we’ve won a boat.” Braun continued, “When we told our daughter we were getting a boat, her first question was, ‘Can we go on it now?’ Our son is especially excited and ready to get out on the water immediately. We showed the kids a video of what the boat looks like, and they haven’t stopped talking about it since. Seeing their excitement has made this experience even more special for our family.”

• 28 oz crushed tomatoes • 24 Florida littleneck clams, cleaned • 4 Florida blue crabs, cleaned • 1 lb Florida shrimp, peeled and deveined • 1/2 lb Florida grouper or snapper,1” dice • Juice of 1/2 lemon, plus wedges for serving • Splash of Florida hot sauce • 1/4 cup Florida basil, chiffonade • Kosher salt to taste Preparation: Heat a large pot with the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, bell pepper, and fennel. Season with kosher salt and sauté until the onion is translucent, 5-7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another 60 seconds until fragrant. Add the tomato paste and cook until deeper in color, 2-3 minutes. Add the wine and let it come to a simmer. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stock and bring back to a simmer. Carefully add the clams and crab. Cover and cook until the clams are beginning to open, 3-5 minutes. Gently stir in the fish and shrimp and cook until opaque in color. Remove any unopened clams. Stir in hot sauce, lemon juice, and basil. Add additional salt to taste. Divide the cioppino between 4 bowls. Garnish with additional basil and serve with lemon wedges and crusty bread. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the openair benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2025 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. Captain’sCorner with Captain Sergio Atanes September’s Best: Finding Big Redfish in Cooler Water September is my change-up month. I shift away frommy usual mackerel, trout, and shark routine and turn my attention to big redfish. With a little luck, the weather begins to ease, the sun feels a bit less punishing, and the fishing becomes enjoyableagain. It is also the time of year when I trade live bait for fresh-cut threadfin sardines. This is not the time I spend much effort hunting redfish across the flats. Instead, I look for them around docks, bridges, and deep cuts along oyster beds. After a long, hot summer, redfish often slide into cooler, deeper water.Their anatomy tells part of the story: their eyes sit high on the head, while the mouth points downward, making themnatural bottom feeders. That is one reason so many fish are missed on top-water plugs or live bait—just before the strike, the redfish can lose sight ofthe prey. The first step is finding docks with moving water.I like the start of an outgoing tide around docks in the upper Tampa Bay area. Once I am within casting distance
In the meantime, one of the most overlooked species in our Tampa Bay estuary is the flounder. We’ve had both bad years and good years, and for this year, we’re seeing a big rebound of these flat fish in all sizes, but mostly in the mid-to-upper teens in inches. Targeting flounder isn’t that difficult if you understand that these fish are ambush predators when it comes to feeding. They will put themselves in a position to intercept whatever forage they seek, and the locations where they will be found most often are those that include good moving water. Passes are excellent locations for

of the dock’s shaded side, I chum with small pieces of cut threadfin sardines to draw fish out and keep them feeding. For tackle, I keep the rig simple. I use either a 1/0 J hook ora 2/0 circle hook, depending on the angler.For clientswith less experience, Ichoose J hooks because they naturally tend to pullwhen setting the hook.For seasoned redfish anglers, I prefer circle hooks. My standard setup is a 30-inch section of 30-pound fluorocarbon leader tied to 15-pound braided linewith a surgeon’s knot. Other knots will work, but the surgeon’s knot is simple, fast, and dependable. Because I am usually fishing3 to 8 feet of water with some current, I add a 1/8- to 1/4-ounce split shot to keep the bait close to the bottom. Of course, not every dock will hold fish, and some will consistently outproduce others. Time on the water is the only way to learn which ones are worth fishing. Around docks, the larger redfishusually stay near the deepest water or tight to nearby structure.
with Captain Ray Markham Fall for Flatties Over the next couple of months, weather patterns will begin to change slowly as we approach the peak of hurricane season and a cooling of water and air temperatures as we approach fall. This is a great time of year to get out on the flats for some big bruiser action with schooling redfish. These big breeders will move in from the Gulf to mingle with inshore redfish as they prepare to spawn. The peak for these fish runs between August and perhaps October, although there have been years that the big breeders hang around until the end of December. Much of that depends on the availability of food, and that includes crabs, shrimp, pilchards, and pinfish, and water temperatures play a big part in this equation.

these fish to set up feeding stations. Both incoming and outgoing tides can serve as peak feeding periods. In addition to passes, areas that funnel water through tight areas, which I call pinch points, are sometimes the most productive. Flounder like changes and will set up an ambush point on them. Changes of depth, potholes, and changes in bottom make-up such as sand, shell, gravel, rock, and grass all lend themselves to one of the features that these fish can excel in, and that’s their ability to camouflage themselves to blend in with the bottom coloration. They are like chameleons in that they can change color to adapt and conceal themselves in preparation to ambush their prey. Flounder will face into the current on the downside of a slope. Since they lay flat on the bottom with both eyes on one side of their bodies, they have a visual advantage when it comes to attacking their prey. Both eyes will be looking up as the forage is flushed over the top of them with the moving currents. Jigs are perhaps the best lures to catch these fish with. They can be bumped along the bottom, worked slowly, or dragged on the bottom, kicking up puffs of sand and attracting these fish. A tiny piece of fresh shrimp on a jig can enhance the

Winter can help you build that knowledge. Cold fronts andhigh pressure often bring extremely low tides, and those low, clear-water days are ideal for studying local docks. Look for rocks, old pilings, debris, and other structures that will hold fish when the water returns. I have found docks with furniture, rocks, and leftover construction debrisbeneath them, often fromhomes-built years earlier. Make notes aboutwhat you find and whereit sits, then return in spring and fall when the redfish move back in. Now that September is here, do not overlook the shade beneath the docks. The big reds are there, waiting for the right bait to drift by.

West Central Florida bite with the enticement of scent. Because of the way their mouths are situated on their bodies, when hooked, many times the hook will penetrate a soft part of the mouth. Reeling these fish to the boat, you’ll note that the closer the fish gets to the boat, the more pressure you’ll feel from the fish. It’s because their flat bodies act like planers, digging downward as the fish moves closer to the boat. Always net the fish when you get it to the boat, because they nearly always attempt to shake the hook loose and often will escape unless the net is under them. This is a pre-spawn period, and many of these fish are showing up now. It’s prime time to target them now, because the closure for these fish runs from October 15th through the end of November. A limit of 5 fish per person, with a minimum length overall of 14 inches, will make for a very tasty dinner from these mild-flavored fish. This might be the time for a personal best flounder as we are approaching fall for flatties.

Captain’sCorner with Captain Mike Schulze Offshore Fishing Near Jupiter Inlet: Sharks, Divers and a Tough Bite Tania and I decided to reserve a boat in Jupiter so we could try some deeper-water fishing. We also invited our good friend Vern, who came over Friday night since he lives on the west coast. It was great catching up with Vern Friday evening and getting everything ready for an early start.

Saturday morning, we left the house around 5:30 a.m. since the ride to the dock was going to take about an hour. We arrived at 6:30 a.m., which was about 30 minutes earlier than our boat reservation. We had to wait for the dock hand to arrive, but I texted him to make sure we were in the right place. He confirmed that we were and let us know which boat we had reserved. He told us we could start loading the boat and that he would be there shortly. By the time the dock hand arrived, we had the boat loaded and Vern already had a barracuda in the boat. We were checked out in no time and began heading out. The Jupiter area is beautiful, and we enjoyed the short ride to the inlet before heading offshore. Our first stop was about two miles outside the inlet in approximately 70 feet of water. I was hoping we could find some snapper in the shallower water and avoid having to make the longer run offshore. The bite was slow, so we decided to move deeper. We found a spot that looked promising based on the bottom, but the current
was running close to 4 knots. We did not have anything heavy enough to hold bottom in that kind of current, so we had no choice but to head back into shallower water. While Tania was reeling up so we could move, something hit her line. Within a minute, it nearly spoiled her. The fish was running so fast that she could not slow it down, and eventually it broke her off. It was disappointing, and little did we know that would be the most exciting event of the day. We continued working water in about 75 feet, but after around 10:00 a.m., the dive boats became a major issue. At one point we were drifting over a spot when Vern said, “What are these bubbles?” I told him they were probably divers. The dive boat was probably 500 to 600 feet away from us and positioned in the opposite direction of the current. Sure enough, the divers surfaced about 50 feet behind our boat. That definitely did not help the bite. I was amazed at how some of the dive boats would pull up near us while we were drifting, and we would watch the divers jump right off the back of the boat. Between the divers, sharks, and slow bite, we had to work hard for every fish. We made the best of it, though, and after a lot of effort, we managed to put a decent bag of fish in the cooler. The ticket seemed to be a 40–60 gram slow-pitch jig tipped with squid. We headed back to the dock around 2:30 p.m. It was a fair bit

South Florida Mullet Run 2026 BIG FALL ACTION IS ALMOST HERE Summertime fishing in Ft Lauderdale aint easy, but anglers willing to work through the challenges have still been rewarded with some quality fish. With fall right around the corner, our attention is turning toward one of the most exciting events of the year: the South Florida Mullet Run. SUMMER FISHING HAS REQUIRED PATIENCE The summer season brought the usual combination of intense heat, warm water, afternoon thunderstorms and unpredictable conditions. On some days, we found plenty of bait and active fish. On others, the bait was scattered and the bite slowed down almost as soon as the sun climbed above the horizon. Smaller tarpon, tiny baits like grass shrimp, little pilchards and rain bait can make presentation tough. These fish will spend an entire tide eating the same tiny live baits and anything that looks slightly different gets ignored. Patience is a must in the summer. Evening and nighttime fishing charters have been most productive. Bridges, inlets and dock lights continue to hold snook and tarpon, especially when moving water concentrates baitfish. Summer fishing can test your patience, but one good tide change can quickly turn a slow trip into an unforgettable one.

THE MULLET ARE COMING As we move toward September and October, schools of migrating mullet will begin traveling south along Florida’s Atlantic coast. The exact timing changes from year to year and is influenced by water temperatures, weather patterns and tropical systems. Once the first large schools reach Fort Lauderdale, the entire fishery can come alive.
Tarpon, snook, jack crevalle, sharks, barracuda and other predators follow the schools and attack from every direction. Sometimes the surface erupts as mullet scatter through the air. Other times, the biggest fish stay beneath the school, waiting for an injured or separated baitfish. This is why the mullet run is one of my favorite times of the year. You never know what is going to eat your bait, and every cast has the potential to connect you with the fish of a lifetime.

Treasure Coast of a ride back in. Once we got into the inlet and started up the ICW, there were so many boats and jet skis that we had to stay at idle speed until we were about a mile up the river. We made it back to the dock around 3:30 p.m. We came home with four porgies, a couple of lane snapper, a couple of strawberry grouper, and a toro. We also caught a ton of small triggerfish and an assortment of other fish that we did not keep. It was an interesting experience, but we do not know the Jupiter area very well. In all honesty, we probably would have done better fishing in our home waters. Between the fuel and the distance we traveled, our fuel bill alone was about three times what we normally spend on a trip out of Fort Pierce. Even though it was not the action-packed day we had hoped for, it was still a good day on the water with Tania and Vern. Sometimes that is what fishing is all about—trying new waters, learning as you go, and making the best of the day. Tania and I extend our best wishes to all our fellow anglers. Southeast FL finding one school and sitting there all day. The bait can move quickly with the wind, tide and current. Birds, surface activity and nervous water can help reveal where the mullet are traveling, but staying mobile is often necessary. Presentation is important because the fish sometimes have thousands of natural baits from which to choose. A mullet that appears injured or becomes separated from the school is often the one that gets eaten.
WHAT WE’LL BE TARGETING Large tarpon are always one of the main attractions. These fish follow the migrating bait along the beaches, through the inlets and into the Intracoastal Waterway. Hooking a big tarpon around a huge school of mullet is about as exciting as inshore fishing gets.
GET READY FOR 2026 SOUTH FLORIDA MULLET RUN! The summer season has made us earn every bite, but those challenging days help us prepare for the fast paced action of fall. Cooler temps, larger bait concentrations and hungry predators should create some of the best fishing opportunities of the year.
Keeping our baits just outside the big schools of mullet, waiting on that heavy unmistakable strike, tarpon blast that live bait so hard you can feel the force of it from 50 yards away. Peeling drag then flying into the air seconds later putting on a show most anglers dream of. It’s all so visual.
The mullet run can arrive suddenly, and its best action does not last forever. If you want to experience big tarpon, snook and other hard-fighting predators feeding around massive schools of bait, now is the time to start planning your Fort Lauderdale fishing charter.
