SPRINGFIELD, Va., June 17, 2026 - In 1999, the Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) and the National Women’s Sailing Association (NWSA) created an annual award recognizing a man or a woman for a record of achievement in inspiring, educating and enriching the lives of women through sailing. The organizations are proud to announce Karen Prioleau of Newport Beach, California as the 2026 award recipient. Her unyielding dedication to educating sailors, exceptional leadership skills and a lifetime of work to promote opportunities for women make her a worthy recipient of the award. Her leadership has inspired countless women to endeavor to serve the sailing community as professionals mariner careers on large private and charter yachts, cruise ships, passenger ferries, whale watch and as instructors.

Karen started sailing and instructing as a young girl at Long Beach Sea Base in Long Beach, California. Later, she and her family accomplished cruising internationally on their 1938 wooden sailboat. Upon sailing home to California, Karen joined the faculty at Orange Coast College (OCC), in Costa Mesa, California, eventually retiring as Associate Professor and Professional Mariners Program Coordinator. She coordinated and instructed in the Professional Mariner Program for the last 15 years, following her decade of work with the OCC School of Sailing and Seamanship. At OCC, she coordinated their Offshore Sailing Program and skippered the 65’ S/V ALASKA EAGLE with adult sailors on many offshore passages. She recounted, “It was amazing to do the sorts of things as a job!” She was rotated into trips from Hawaii to Alaska, through the Panama Canal, the longest being from Newport Beach, CA to Easter Island. “Learning so much. It was a blast!” In the early years of her long tenure at OCC

the professional mariners program consisted of all male students. Over the years women in the program grew and grew to be about 40%.

Sought for her training abilities, Karen Prioleau instructed in Safety at Sea trainings on the east and west coast of the US. Karen co-organized a crewoverboard research event in Newport, Rhode Island, in collaboration with the Cruising Club of America, Storm Trysail Club, New York Yacht Club and US Sailing. The event involved four offshore boats of various types evaluating different techniques for locating and rescuing individuals in the water, including nighttime and moderate sea conditions.

Karen Prioleau has been a vital member of the national faculty as Master Instructor of US Sailing for 24 years, contributing to the Keelboat and Powerboat programs. In this role, she has been instrumental in updating the navigational material, an area of sailing that offers opportunities for women of all ages and physical abilities to become proficient.

The award was presented in Newport, Rhode Island, June 16 as Karen prepares for her fourth Newport to Bermuda race, this year aboard S/V SELKIE, sailing with owner and 2018 awardee, Sheila McCurdy. NWSA President Debby Grimm notes, “One pillar of the Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award is educating women in the sport of sailing. It was a pleasure meeting Karen Prioleau for the first time at our 2026 conference. She was a valuable instructor and met all our expectations with her knowledge and congeniality. Well-deserved, Karen!”

Basic Boat Trailer Maintenance Checklist

Technically a boat’s trailer is not part of your boat, but it often plays a big role in the boating and towing experience. Most new boat owners start with a craft that is stored and frequently towed on a trailer, and trailer trouble can derail your day on the water. Fortunately, with a little basic maintenance boat owners can avoid the most-common issues related to trailers.

Trailer Tires and Wheels: Problems related to tires and wheel bearings can leave you stranded at the side of the road, and can even be a safety hazard.

Check Tire Pressure: A failed tire caused by low air pressure is probably the number-one cause of trailer trouble, so its good practice to check trailer tire air pressure before hitting the highway. (Don’t Forget the Spare)

• Inflate to the maximum rating on the tire or as listed on the capacity sticker on the trailer, which may be 60 psi or more. • Heat builds up in a tire with low pressure and can cause the tire to delaminate and fail, which can be a dangerous situation at 70 MPH.

• Tires will naturally lose a pound or two of air pressure each month, so it’s especially important to remember to check the tires after the trailer has been sitting unused over the winter. Not all boat trailers come with a spare tire. If yours did not, get one and a mount for it. It’s good insurance. Remember to maintain the air pressure in the spare, and make sure you travel with tools and a jack you can use to change a flat.

Tire Wear: Periodically check your trailer tires for wear and for age. Most boaters will not wear out the tread on trailer tires, but if you notice a tire is wearing unevenly it could be an indication of a bent axle, or an axle that’s out of alignment. This should be fixed before the tire fails. Tires that are more than six years old should be replaced, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The last four digits of the DOT code on the tire sidewall indicate the month and year the tire

was made; “3517” would indicate the tire was made in the 35th week of 2017. The tires under your trailer should all be ST (Special Trailer) type tires, which are designed specifically for trailer use, with stronger cords and stiffer sidewalls than LT (Light Truck) tires.

Wheel Bearings: Failed wheel bearings are another common cause of trailer trouble. The bearings may get rusty if they are contaminated by water, which is why most boat trailers are equipped with wheel bearing protectors (Bearing Buddy is a popular brand and has become a common term for all bearing protectors).

Wheel bearing protectors use a spring-loaded piston to hold grease in the wheel hub under light pressure, which prevents water from entering the hub and bearing assembly. The protector will have a grease fitting in its center that’s used to add grease and maintain this pressure. Read the directions that come with your trailer for details on adding grease.

Even with bearing protectors, it’s a good idea to inspect and repack the wheel bearings with fresh grease every three to five seasons.

Trailer Brakes: All but the lightest boat/trailer combinations will be equipped with brakes—in some states all trailers must have brakes—which will require some maintenance over time to insure safe performance.

Keep Brakes Clean: If you launch your boat in salt water it’s important to rinse the trailer brakes as soon as possible after you retrieve the boat, before corrosion can start to form on brake components. Some marinas will have a fresh-water hose available for this purpose, and some trailers may be equipped with a hose connection and system to rinse the brakes. Also, rinse off the wheels to keep the lug nuts from rusting tight to the wheel studs.

Brake Pads or Shoes: Trailer brakes may be disc-type (with brake pads) or drum-type (with shoes), both of which wear with

use, just like the brake pads on your tow vehicle. Have the pads or shoes inspected every few seasons.: You can combine brake service with wheel bearing service. A general auto repair service can handle this job. Ask them to also check the brake lines for signs of rust.

Brake Fluid: Check the brake fluid reservoir in the master cylinder (on the brake tongue) a couple of times a season, following instructions in the trailer owner’s manual. Fluid level will go down as the pads wear. If the level is suddenly very low you could have a leak in the brake system, which should be repaired immediately.

Trailer Coupler: The surge brake actuator on a boat trailer is part of the coupler assembly (the part that fits over your trailer hitch ball) and it may require occasional lubrication to work smoothly. See your owner’s manual for details.

Trailer Lights: You should check all of your trailer lights every time you hook up the trailer.

Clean Connection: Keep the trailer light connection on your tow vehicle covered when not towing to prevent corrosion from fouling the little metal pins, especially if you live where there’s salt on the roads in winter. Most will have a plastic cap that fits over the connector. You can get a replacement at an auto parts store. A little dielectric grease will also help prevent corrosion.

Get Grounded: A bad ground is the most-common cause or trailer light failure. That’s the white wire, and it may be secured to the trailer frame with a small screw or bolt. The ground needs a good, clean contact with the frame to work. Remove the screw or bolt and clean any rust off of the contact point with a little sandpaper so the ground is contacting bare metal.

Bulbs: Most new trailers have LED lights that should never age, but the incandescent bulbs in older trailer lights will burn out and need to be replaced. The light sockets are also prone to corrosion. Again, use a dab of dielectric grease when replacing the bulbs to prevent corrosion.

Broiled Florida Oysters

Ingredients

2 dozen fresh Florida oysters, shucked and on the half shell

1 stick unsalted butter

Hot sauce (your favorite), to taste

2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped fine

3 lemons (1 for juice, 2 cut for garnish)

1 tablespoon fresh garlic, chopped fine

1 teaspoon seafood seasoning

¼ cup Parmesan cheese, grated

¼ cup panko or regular unseasoned breadcrumbs

1 teaspoon olive oil

Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Preparation:

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. In a small sauce pot combine butter, hot sauce, garlic, seafood seasoning and lemon juice, season with salt and fresh ground pepper. Melt the butter mixture over medium-low heat, stir to combine.

Taste and adjust with more lemon or hot sauce if needed. Remove from heat and set aside.

In a small mixing bowl, combine breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, olive oil and parsley. Use a fork to mix breadcrumb mixture and set aside.

Place oysters on the half shell on a cookie sheet. Spoon an even amount of melted butter over each oyster. Next, evenly sprinkle breadcrumb mixture over the top of each buttered oyster. Carefully place oysters in preheated oven and switch to broil. During this stage of the cooking it is important to keep a close eye on the oysters under the broiler. The oysters should only take 2 to 3 minutes to cook. Carefully remove oysters from the broiler and let cool slightly. Serve broiled oysters with any leftover butter mixture and lemon wedges.

Near shore fishing off Johns Pass and Madeira Beach has been producing a great summer mixed bag, with lane snapper as one of the top focuses right now. We are seeing good lane snapper action, a few nice mangrove snapper, some red grouper, and plenty of heads and tails species in the mix. The warmer water has shifted the pattern, and as expected, the hogfish bite has softened while the snapper species have become more active.

Lane snapper have really picked up with the warmer water, and they are a perfect near shore target right now. These fish are aggressive, colorful, excellent eating, and willing to bite a variety of baits. We are finding them around hard bottom, ledges, shell bottom, and mixed structure, especially as we get into deeper near shore water. Squid, shrimp, and small chunks of threadfin are all great choices. Squid stays on the hook well and catches numbers. Shrimp can produce quality bites. Fresh

cut threadfin can be a great option to produce bigger lanes while giving you a chance for mangrove snapper too. If you are missing bites, downsize your hook and bait.

Mangrove snapper are also showing near shore, and we are seeing some nice fish on the 10 hour all day trips. Some really quality mangroves are coming off the near shore bottom from time to time, which is exciting to see. Near shore mangrove snapper are smarter and more cautious than lane snapper, so lighter tackle and cleaner presentation often make the difference. You wont catch mangroves on chicken rigs or funky set ups with extra beads or crimps typically. Small chunks of threadfin are one of the best baits, especially on a light double-snell rig with smaller hooks. We do see them on live shrimp and a great option is a small pinfish.

Mangroves like structure, but they do not like unnatural presentations. If your bait spins, drags, or looks out of place, the bigger fish may

ignore it. Start with 30 to 40 pound fluorocarbon and adjust based on water clarity and bite quality. If they are leader shy, lighten up. If they are biting well, stick to heavier leader to give you the opportunity to land larger fish that may bite.

Red grouper have been a nice part of the near shore action lately. On our 10 hour trips, we have been seeing two, three, four, and sometimes five keeper sized red grouper caught, which is great action for that trip. Also, we always see tons of the smaller ones too. The 10 hour is our first trip with a realistic chance at red grouper because we are able to reach deeper water and better hard bottom than the half day. Red grouper near shore are often found around potholes, ledges, cracks, and scattered hard bottom rather than giant structure.

Weekly Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report – South Florida – Week of July 9, 2026

Fishing this past week was a tale of two different patterns. Trolling slowed down noticeably for much of the week, likely due to the full moon, which often has a significant impact on pelagic fishing. The biggest change was the Blackfin Tuna bite, which went from being very consistent to nearly nonexistent. Even so, we still found a few Bonitas, the occasional Mahi-Mahi, and a couple of Wahoo around the full moon.

When the trolling bite slowed, we switched gears and focused more on bottom and wreck fishing, and it definitely paid off.

Snapper fishing continues to be one of the most reliable options right now. We caught plenty of Yellowtail Snapper along with Mangrove Snapper, Vermilion Snapper, Yelloweye Snapper, and several other bottom species throughout the week. If you’re looking to bring home fresh fish for the dinner table, the bottom bite has been outstanding.

The wrecks also produced several giant Barracudas using both live and dead baits. These aggressive predators always put on an incredible fight and are a favorite among anglers looking for a little extra excitement.

The highlight of the week, however, was the shark fishing—a sure sign that summer has arrived in South Florida. We caught and safely released two Nurse Sharks, including one giant male, along with a beautiful Lemon Shark. All three fish provided exciting battles and were released in great condition to fight another day.

Conditions remained fairly stable throughout the week with light north current and generally light winds. Sargassum grass varied from day to day. Some mornings we found very little, while other days it was scattered throughout the fishing grounds and created some challenging trolling conditions. Fortunately, the trolling bite began to improve over the last couple of days, which is an encouraging sign heading into the coming week.

Looking ahead, we expect to see increasing numbers of King Mackerel and Bonitas as July progresses. Both species provide outstanding action, and King Mackerel are one of the best-eating fish around— especially when they’re turned into fresh smoked fish dip. As we move into the middle and end of July, we’re optimistic that fishing will continue to improve and that

some of the biggest fish of the summer will begin to show up.

We hope everyone had a safe and happy Fourth of July! We still have a few charter dates available for the remainder of the month, so now is a great time to get on the schedule.

Whether you’re looking to fill the cooler with fresh Snapper, chase fastmoving King Mackerel, or battle a trophy shark, summer fishing is just getting started.

Weekly Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report – South Florida – Week of 7/17/2026

This past week, everything seemed to come together on the water. Despite the Sargassum grass continuing to be a challenge, we worked around it and were rewarded with some outstanding summer fishing. In fact, the action seemed to improve as the week went on.

Trolling was the most consistent technique throughout the week, with the majority of the bites coming on our deeper presentations fished 40+ feet down on the planers. Both 3.5” Drone Spoons and Sea Witches rigged with Bonita strips produced excellent action. We caught a great variety of fish, including Blackfin Tuna, King Mackerel, plenty of Bonitas, and even some big Blue Runners.

It was especially exciting to see the King Mackerel bite continue to improve. Blackfin Tuna fishing also remained steady, giving anglers plenty of opportunities to take home some of the best-eating fish in our local waters.

Live bait fishing on the wrecks produced several large Amberjacks, while slow trolling live baits resulted in a few giant Barracudas that put on incredible fights with blistering runs and powerful strikes.

The highlight of the week, however, had to be the shark fishing. The hot summer water temperatures really had them feeding. We caught and safely released several different species, including Dusky Sharks, Lemon Sharks, Sandbar Sharks, and even a giant male Nurse Shark. Every one of them provided an unforgettable battle and reminded us why summertime is one of the best seasons to target big game fish in South Florida.

Bottom fishing also continued to produce.

bite remained very consistent, giving anglers looking to bring home fresh fish for dinner another excellent option.

Conditions were fairly stable all week, with light winds, light current, and hot summer temperatures. While the Sargassum grass occasionally made trolling more challenging, finding clean water was well worth the effort, and it consistently produced fish.

Summer fishing in Fort Lauderdale is in full swing, and with King Mackerel becoming more plentiful, Blackfin Tuna and Snapper fishing remaining strong, and sharks becoming increasingly active, the weeks ahead are shaping up to be some of the best of the season.

Auxiliary Flotilla 11-1 Clearwater is pleased to offer the Boat America® Safe Boating Course to area boaters throughout 2026. With Florida leading the nation in both registered recreational vessels and boating-related accidents, boating safety education has never been more important.

To better serve the community, Flotilla 11-1 Clearwater offers the Boat America Safe Boating Course both in person in Clearwater and virtually via Zoom. These flexible learning options make it easier for boaters to meet Florida’s education requirements while accessing life-saving information.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a Boating Safety Education ID Card issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). This card is required for many operators and is often recognized by insurance companies for potential policy discounts.

FLORIDA BOATERS CAN NOW TAKE FREE STATE-APPROVED BOATING SAFETY COURSE - At-home learning helps Florida boaters prepare for the water easily and conveniently. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has launched the only free interactive boating safety course for Florida recreational boaters. The course, which is approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and meets state boating safety education requirements, can be taken at the student’s own pace. After passing the exam, they can print their own certificate of completion for immediate use and will receive a lifetime card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.The course provides video demonstrations and sample common boating situations for students to interact with to better understand how to evaluate real-world instances. The learning experience includes storylines where the student “boats” to various places and includes interactive learning tools like flashcards and drag-and-drop features to enhance learning and retention. Course-takers will be able to design and name the virtual boat that takes them through the course and map how far they’ve “traveled” within it. In the state of Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must pass an approved boating safety course and have in his/her possession photographic identification and proof of boating safety education completion issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The online BoatUS Foundation boating safety course and exam are approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard as exceeding the minimum requirements for the National Recreational Boating Safety Program. “NASBLA approval of our Florida Boating Safety Course is a meaningful investment in boater safety, said Lynne O’Hearn, Program Manager at BoatUS Foundation. “Boater education is one of the most effective ways to prevent accidents, and this course gives Florida boaters the opportunity to build their skills to better enjoy Florida waterways safely.”

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630) 674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART

Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2025 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone.
