Ingredients for the tacos:
• 1 pound Florida blue crab
• 4 large Florida portobello mushrooms, cleaned
• ½ cup Florida bell peppers (1 medium or 2 small), chopped fine

Biocide-free antifouling paint performs best against fouling
When comparing different types of antifouling paints against fouling on leisure boats, the results were the opposite of what many would expect. Of the paints tested, the biocide-free silicone paint worked best, and the paint marketed as environmentally friendly turned out to be extremely toxic. The study, led by Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, was conducted in Swedish, Danish and French coastal waters, and also showed that coatings with a low copper content can be just as effective as those containing more copper. An untreated boat hull can be covered in a thick layer of algae, barnacles and other marine organisms in just a few weeks. This makes the boat both heavier and slower in the water – which leads to higher fuel consumption, among other things. Therefore, boat owners regularly paint the hull with so-called ‘antifouling paints’ that slowly release toxic substances – biocides – to prevent the organisms from growing on the hull. The paints that dominate the market contain the biocide cuprous oxide and are effective as long as they release copper. However, it has two major disadvantages – it affects other organisms in the environment, and it contaminates the water and bottom sediments.
“The goal of our study was to see how the environmental impact of antifouling paints can be reduced, while boat owners get the effect they want,” says Maria Lagerström, researcher at the Division of Maritime Environmental Science at Chalmers and lead author of the new study.
Seven different paints in different marine environments
Together with colleagues from Swedish, Danish and French universities, Maria Lagerström investigated seven different antifouling paints:
• Five paints with a cuprous oxide content ranging from 6 to 32 weight percent.
• One biocide-free silicone paint that makes the surface so slippery that the organisms cannot attach.
• One paint that instead of copper contains the biocides tralopyril and zinc pyrithione.
The last paint is not sold in Sweden today, but in several other EU countries, including Denmark and France, where it is marketed as safe for the environment.
To test the effectiveness, the different paints were applied to panels that were immersed in the water for up to six months in three different coastal waters: Tjärnö in Sweden, Hundested in Denmark and Arcachon Bay in France. The researchers measured both the surface coverage of the fouling on the different paints, and how much biocides were released into the surrounding water.
Although the coastal waters in the different countries differ, all the results pointed in the same direction: the silicone-based biocide-free paint was the most effective, closely followed by the biocide-containing tralopyril paint. For the copper coatings, the copper content in the paint was not a deciding factor, meaning that each of the five copper paints had more
or less the same effect against fouling, despite a wide range in their copper content.
“Eco-friendly” paint was the most toxic
The researchers also performed two different tests to see how much the paints impact the marine environment. The first was an environmental risk assessment where models were used to assess the levels of biocides that the paints can give rise to in the marine environment, based on how much was released into the water during the test period. The silicone paint was not included here, as it does not contain biocides.
According to the test, none of the biocidal paints would meet today’s environmental risk criteria, even if those with a low copper content fell below limit values in French waters. But one paint clearly stood out – the tralopyril paint, which is marketed as environmentally friendly.
The second test included all paints, where four different marine species were exposed to leachate solutions from the painted panels in the lab to see how they were affected. In this case, too, it was the paint with tralopyril that fared the worst, followed by the paint with the highest copper content.
The test winner is the silicone paint that has the best sustainability profile because it performed well against fouling while having low toxicity. It requires more prep work and a special underlying coating to get the paint to adhere to the hull, but in our comparison it looks extremely promising and is worth trying.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a Boating Safety Education ID Card issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). This card is required for many operators and is often recognized by insurance companies for potential policy discounts.

FLORIDA BOATERS CAN NOW TAKE FREE STATE-APPROVED BOATING SAFETY COURSE - At-home learning helps Florida boaters prepare for the water easily and conveniently. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has launched the only free interactive boating safety course for Florida recreational boaters. The course, which is approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and meets state boating safety education requirements, can be taken at the student’s own pace. After passing the exam, they can print their own certificate of completion for immediate use and will receive a lifetime card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.The course provides video demonstrations and sample common boating situations for students to interact with to better understand how to evaluate real-world instances. The learning experience includes storylines where the student “boats” to various places and includes interactive learning tools like flashcards and drag-and-drop features to enhance learning and retention. Course-takers will be able to design and name the virtual boat that takes them through the course and map how far they’ve “traveled” within it. In the state of Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must pass an approved boating safety course and have in his/her possession photographic identification and proof of boating safety education completion issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The online BoatUS Foundation boating safety course and exam are approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard as exceeding the minimum requirements for the National Recreational Boating Safety Program. “NASBLA approval of our Florida Boating Safety Course is a meaningful investment in boater safety, said Lynne O’Hearn, Program Manager at BoatUS Foundation. “Boater education is one of the most effective ways to prevent accidents, and this course gives Florida boaters the opportunity to build their skills to better enjoy Florida waterways safely.”

7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD
WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630) 674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUARTDespite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2025 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner,
at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. Learning to Fish Differently
Over the years, the way we fish has changed dramatically with advances in tackle technology, GPS, and sonar systems. While these tools have made anglers more efficient, they have also increased pressure on fish populations.
I still remember the early days of my youth, running out of Clearwater Pass and judging our position by the size of the buildings on shore. Once we reached the right area, we would shut everything down, put an ear to the gunwale, and listen. If we heard the familiar “snap, crackle, and pop,” we knew we were over good bottom and could begin our drift for grouper. Those days are largely behind us now, and it often feels like we have to run farther offshore to find decent fish—hoping the spot hasn’t already been marked and heavily fished by others.
That reality is what brings me back to the idea of fishing differently. Over the last 10 years, I have found keeper grouper, mangrove snapper, and some impressive grunts—one of my personal favorites—inside Tampa Bay. Fishing these areas has helped me cut down on travel time and fuel costs, which is especially important with today’s high gas prices. Several software products can help anglers identify promising new areas, including C-MAP, Navionics, and Fish Reveal.
Finding productive
water takes both time and money. I have spent countless hours on a tablet studying mapping software, marking potential locations, and downloading them to my Simrad GPS/sonar system. I have also spent plenty on fuel, running to each spot to see whether it holds fish. In many cases, the location I marked ended up being 5 to 20 yards away from the actual structure, but even then, I still found a new place to fish. The key is not to get discouraged. Sometimes a location that looks excellent on the software turns out to be less impressive in person, and it is best to move on and keep searching.
When fishing in 20 to 45 feet of water, lighter tackle is often the best choice. For mangroves, grunts, and seabass, I prefer a 7-foot mediumaction rod paired with a 3000-size spinning reel spooled with 15-pound braided line. It is a well-balanced setup that performs very well, even though you may occasionally lose a larger fish—that is simply part of the game. When the bite turns on, I switch to a 7-foot medium-heavy rod with a 6000size spinning reel loaded with 40-pound braid.
I also moved away from the traditional circle-hookand-sinker approach years ago and began using jig heads instead. In my experience, jig heads help keep the bait on the bottom more

The West Central Florida region offers some serious action for everyone right now. Big game fishing inshore and nearshore with tarpon and cobia, and offshore bottom fishing for red snapper, big red grouper, and a variety of other snappers are most targeted during this time of year, and when in season. For inshore anglers hitting the passes and beaches, they can produce some quality snook for catch-and-release during this closed season while they are in the process of spawning. Live pigfish, pinfish, and shrimp all work, but for big snook, a dead bait fished on the bottom will attract the largest fish. Ladyfish and mullet heads are among the top preferred dead baits for snook. Take care when releasing these fish to ensure their survival so that reproduction remains uninterrupted.
The past few weeks have seen some nice over-slot trout in the mid-twentyinch range caught by anglers using DOA CAL jigs with Shad tails. Some early morning action with trout has been exciting for anglers using topwater lures such as the MirrOlure Top Dog and the MirrOlure Duke Dog. Where smaller bait is around, the Duke Dog seems to excel, and where mullet schools are in the area, the Top Dog has been very productive.
New and full moon phases produce increasing tidal flow, making
for great periods to fish for ambush predators such as snook, trout, and flounder. Drifting DOA Shrimp in the tide around lighted docks and bridges at night can be especially productive for some terrific action with big trout and snook. Fishing the bottom areas around bridges can produce black drum this time of year. While you can catch them on jigs at times, live shrimp is always a good choice.

This month, shrimp may be found drifting in the outgoing currents on the evening tide around both the new and full moon, but primarily on the full moon at the end of June. This is a great time for dipping shrimp in passes like Bunces Pass and Longboat Pass. Others may also show good numbers of shrimp headed out to spawn in the Gulf. Gamefish like snook and tarpon will line up to feed on this food conveyor belt of sorts. Live shrimp hooked under the horn with a 1/0 circle hook can be very productive when fished with a split shot or enough weight to get the shrimp down near the bottom. Areas of hard bottom in lower Tampa Bay can give up good numbers of mangrove snapper and black seabass this time of year. If jigging is your preference, CAL Jigs with Shad tails rigged on a quarter ounce jig head
can fill limits of these fish. Tipped with a small fingernail-sized bit of shrimp can enhance the bite and add flounder to the catch as well. Many of these areas with hard bottoms can also attract tarpon. I’ve had success using both the DOA Trolling model Baitbuster and the MirrOlure Catch 2000 with upgraded, heavier hooks for tarpon. Cobia and tarpon will both readily take live crabs, threadfin herring, and pinfish.
The heat is on, so hit the water early or late in the day for some great results and more comfortable fishing. ‘Til then… I’ll catch ya later!

Podcast Episode: Fishing Trips On The Water
Pip: Some mornings you sneak out for a few hours before the day takes over, and some afternoons a text about lunch turns into a full-blown fishing adventure — ReelBlessed has been having both kinds of days on the Treasure Coast.
Mara: Today we’re covering two territories: quick morning outings where the plan is simple and the clock is tight, and those spontaneous days that somehow become the best ones. Let’s start with the short morning trips.
Short Morning Outings
Pip: The premise here is almost defiantly modest — a few hours, a few rods, artificial baits only, and zero intention of keeping anything. The question is whether that kind of stripped-down outing actually delivers.
Mara: It does, and the setup is specific: “I was throwing a 4-inch Salt Strong paddle tail in the Wedding Crasher color on a 1/4 oz Hoss-weighted hook, and that setup proved to be the key. Every fish I landed today came on that same bait.”
Pip: Four trout on one color combination, out and back by ten in the morning. The constraint isn’t a limitation — it’s the whole point.
Mara: Tania cycled through Slam Shady and Optimus Lime without much luck, and her one real shot — a nice trout that came off right at the boat — is the kind of detail that makes a short trip feel honest rather than
triumphant.
Pip: Gone by 9:30, home by 10, and still calling it a great morning. There’s a case to be made for that.
Mara: And it sets up a useful contrast with what happens when the day has no plan at all.
Spontaneous Fishing Days
Pip: The Lunch Plans Turned Fishing Adventure post starts with what might be the most reasonable escalation in recent memory — a text about Pub Subs becomes a full day on a canal near the North Fork, trolling motor only, Rat-L-Traps in hand.
Mara: The day’s centerpiece arrives early and unexpectedly: “A few minutes later, we got eyes on it — and it turned out to be one of the largest gar I’ve ever seen.” It measured just shy of six feet. Personal best.
Pip: A near-six-foot gar is not the fish you plan for. It is, however, the fish that defines the day.
Mara: What’s notable is the structure of the outing around it. They prayed before launching — actually after the gar, once they realized they hadn’t yet — and from that point the smaller snook started coming steadily. About ten snook total by the end.
Pip: Then the battery dies.
Twice. Because a tripped GFI outlet meant nothing charged overnight — which is the kind of mechanical plot twist that would end a lesser trip.
Mara: Art had tools on board, jumped the battery from a trolling motor battery to get the engine running, and they kept fishing. When it died a second time, they called it — but not before stopping at a few more spots on the way in.
Pip: Of course they did.
Mara: The Pub Subs got eaten in a shaded canal spot with the Power-Poles down — right before the Power-Poles refused to come back up. The food was apparently worth it.
Pip: Spontaneous days have a way of piling on. The gar, the snook, the dead battery, the sandwiches — it all lands in the same afternoon.
Mara: And the root cause turned out to be a tripped outlet, meaning the battery itself was fine. Good news that arrived at the end of a long troubleshoot.
Pip: Two very different days — one tightly planned, one barely planned at all — and both end the same way: back at the dock, fish caught, no complaints.
Mara: The water has a way of delivering regardless. More from the Treasure Coast next time.
This week’s fishing report is all about one incredible catch. The highlight of the week was a massive 9’2” Scalloped Hammerhead Shark that provided one of the most memorable battles we’ve had in quite some time.
The fish was hooked during one of our 4-hour shared fishing trips and put on an absolute show. After more than an hour of fighting the shark, we managed to get it boatside multiple times, only to watch it make another powerful run and take back hundreds of feet of line. Eventually, we got the fish under control, tagged it, and safely released it to fight another day. Congratulations to Chad from Texas on landing such an amazing trophy fish. It’s not every day you catch a shark of that caliber, and it will undoubtedly be a fishing memory he’ll never forget.
Outside of the Hammerhead action, fishing remained very productive throughout the week. One of the biggest improvements was the significant reduction in Sargassum grass. The cleaner water made
trolling much easier on both the crew and the equipment and allowed us to cover water more effectively.
The best trolling bait this week was a 3.5” Drone Spoon fished on the long planer. We also had success pulling Ballyhoo and Bonita strips both on planers and on surface baits.
The Bonita bite really turned on this week, providing steady action and plenty of hard-fighting fish. Mixed in with the Bonita were Blackfin Tuna, King Mackerel, and the occasional Mahi-Mahi, keeping anglers guessing what might show up next.
The Yellowtail Snapper bite remained very consistent, with a few nice Mutton Snappers mixed in as well. For anglers looking to bring home fresh fish for the dinner table, the bottom fishing continues to be a reliable option.
Current remained fairly light for most of the week before a stronger north current developed over the last few days. Winds were generally light out of the south and southeast, creating comfortable
fishing conditions for most trips.
Wreck fishing slowed down slightly compared to previous weeks, although we did manage to catch a nice Nurse Shark that provided plenty of excitement for our anglers.
Looking ahead, Mahi fishing should continue to improve as summer patterns develop. We also expect to continue seeing good numbers of Bonita and Blackfin Tuna, while the Snapper bite should remain strong. Weather conditions look favorable in the days ahead, and if the seaweed continues to stay manageable, fishing should remain consistent across a variety of techniques.
