A flexible and social cockpit
The reimagined mid-section offers one of the most modular seating solutions in its class. A driver’s sofa with flip-up bolsters and a reversible backrest lets the space shift naturally between driving, dining, and lounging. Ingredients for the tacos:
• 1 pound Florida Gulf shrimp, peeled and deveined
• 4 cups fresh Florida watermelon, diced large
• ¼ cup fresh Florida sweet red bell pepper, chopped
• 1 tablespoon Florida seafood seasoning blend
• 1 cup fresh Florida parsley, rinsed
• 1 tablespoon fresh Florida chili pepper, chopped (if desired)
• ¼ cup fresh oregano
• 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, minced
• ¼ cup red wine vinegar
• 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
• 2/3 cup olive oil
• ¼ cup queso fresco cheese (or feta), crumbled
• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Preparation:
Bring a medium-sized pot of water to a boil and add one tablespoon of the seafood seasoning. Carefully add the Gulf shrimp to the boiling water and stir. Cook the shrimp for 2 to 3 minutes, depending on size, until just done. Remove the cooked shrimp from the pot and place them in a medium bowl filled with water and ice to stop the cooking process. Once the shrimp have completely cooled, remove them from the ice water and pat dry. Store the cooked shrimp in the refrigerator until ready to assemble the dish.
To make the chimichurri sauce, add the parsley, oregano, garlic, smoked paprika, sweet bell peppers, red wine vinegar and fresh chili pepper (if desired) to a food processor or blender. Use the pulse feature to blend ingredients together. 3 to 7 pulses should give a diced consistency. Do not over-blend the sauce. Pour the sauce into a small bowl and use a spoon to mix in the olive oil. Taste and adjust the seasoning with sea salt and fresh ground pepper. Cover and store in the refrigerator until ready to use.
Assemble the dish by adding 1/3 of the chimichurri sauce to the cooked and chilled shrimp in a mixing bowl. Stir to evenly coat all the shrimp, adding more sauce if desired. Add the diced watermelon to the sauced shrimp and stir gently. Serve chilled with crumbled queso fresco on top and extra chimichurri sauce on the side.

FLORIDA BOATERS CAN NOW TAKE FREE STATE-APPROVED BOATING SAFETY COURSE At-home learning helps Florida boaters prepare for the water easily and conveniently. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has launched the only free interactive boating safety course for Florida recreational boaters. The course, which is approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and meets state boating safety education requirements, can be taken at the student’s own pace. After passing the exam, they can print their own certificate of completion for immediate use and will receive a lifetime card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.The course provides video demonstrations and sample common boating situations for students to interact with to better understand how to evaluate real-world instances. The learning experience includes storylines where the student “boats” to various places and includes interactive learning tools like flashcards and drag-and-drop features to enhance learning and retention. Course-takers will be able to design and name the virtual boat that takes them through the course and map how far they’ve “traveled” within it. In the state of Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must pass an approved boating safety course and have in his/her possession photographic identification and proof of boating safety education completion issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The online BoatUS Foundation boating safety course and exam are approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard as exceeding the minimum requirements for the National Recreational Boating Safety Program. “NASBLA approval of our Florida Boating Safety Course is a meaningful investment in boater safety, said Lynne O’Hearn, Program Manager at BoatUS Foundation. “Boater education is one of the most effective ways to prevent accidents,

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2025 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results
of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. Inshore Fishing Report
The inshore fishing around John’s Pass, Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, St. Pete Beach, Boca Ciega Bay, and the greater Tampa Bay area has been full of life lately as we settle into that warm early summer pattern. Water temperatures are climbing into the mid-80s, bait is thick around the passes, bridges, grass flats, mangrove shorelines, docks, and spoil islands, and the fish are responding well during the right windows of moving water. The biggest key right now is timing.
Snook have really pushed into their summertime haunts around the passes, beaches, bridge fenders, seawalls, docks, mangrove points, and sandy potholes near moving water. Around John’s Pass, look for snook staged along the beach troughs early in the morning, tucked around bridge structure during the day, and feeding hard around dock lights at night. Live scaled sardines, threadfins, shrimp, and pinfish are great options, but a well-placed paddle tail, flair hawk jig, soft plastic jerk bait, or topwater plug can also get crushed when the fish are actively feeding. For best results, work your bait naturally with the current instead of fighting against it. Snook are ambush feeders, so getting your bait swept past a piling, seawall corner, mangrove point, or shadow line can make all the difference.
Redfish have been a little more scattered, but we are still seeing them around mangrove shorelines, oyster bars, residential docks, grass flat edges, and sandy potholes throughout Boca Ciega Bay and the surrounding backwaters. The best redfish bite has been during moving water, especially when the tide is high enough to push fish up into the mangroves or around oyster-laden shorelines. Cut pinfish, cut mullet, live shrimp, pilchards, and small crabs are all great choices. Artificial anglers can do well with gold spoons, weedless soft plastics, and small paddle tails worked slowly around potholes and shoreline edges. If you find mullet schools pushing along a mangrove edge or flat, slow down and work that area thoroughly because redfish are often mixed in with them, feeding on shrimp, crabs, and small baitfish stirred up by the school.
Trout fishing has been best on the deeper grass flats, potholes, and drop-offs, especially where clean water and bait are present. Around the Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, and St. Pete Beach area, look for trout over healthy grass in four to ten foot of water early in the day, then slightly deeper as the sun gets higher and water temperatures climb. Live shrimp under a popping cork is always a reliable option, especially when you are drifting larger flats and trying to locate fish. Soft plastic paddle tails, jerk baits, and suspending twitch baits are also great choices. The trick with trout is covering water until you find the fish. Once you catch one, keep working that same depth, pothole edge, or grass line because there are usually more fish nearby.
Mangrove snapper are really starting to fire
up inshore as the water warms. We are seeing them around docks, bridges, seawalls, rock piles, jetties, oyster bars, and deeper cuts inside the pass. John’s Pass is a great area to target mangrove snapper because of the strong current, structure, and abundance of small bait. The key is lighter tackle and a natural presentation. Use small live shrimp, tiny pilchards, greenbacks, or small pieces of cut bait on a lighter fluorocarbon leader with just enough weight to get the bait down. Mangrove snapper are smart and leader shy, especially in clear water, so downsizing to lighter leader can make a big difference. Chumming with small pieces of cut bait or crushed shrimp can help get them fired up, but do not overfeed them. Keep your bait small, fresh, and right in the strike zone close to structure.

Shark fishing has also been very active with the warmer water and abundance of bait around the beaches, passes, flats, and nearshore edges. Blacktips, bonnetheads, spinner sharks, nurse sharks, and other coastal sharks are all possible around our area this time of year. Cut ladyfish, mullet, mackerel, jack crevalle, and bonita are great shark baits. Around the flats and mangrove edges, bonnetheads will also eat shrimp, crabs, and smaller natural baits. For larger sharks, focus on deeper cuts, pass edges, beach troughs, and areas where bait schools are concentrated.
Flounder have been showing up around sandy potholes, bridge edges, dock lines, pass edges, and areas where sand meets grass or rock. These fish love to lay flat on the bottom and ambush bait as it moves by, so slow and low is the name of the game. Small live shrimp, mud minnows, finger mullet, and small pilchards worked near bottom are great options. A jig head with a soft plastic bounced slowly along the bottom can also be very productive.
Pompano have been around the passes, sandy channels, bridge areas, beach troughs, and clean-water cuts where current is moving over sandy bottom. Around John’s Pass, they can be caught bouncing small pompano jigs, goofy jigs, or small pieces of shrimp near the bottom. These fish are often moving quickly, so covering water is important. Look for clean water, sandy bottom, small crabs, coquina, and current seams. A bright little jig bounced along the bottom with short, sharp hops is a great way to trigger a bite. If you catch one pompano, keep working that same lane because they often travel in small groups.
Tarpon are becoming a bigger part of the inshore and beach fishing conversation as we move deeper into the warmer season. We are seeing more fish along the beaches, around the passes, deeper channels, bridge areas, and larger bait schools. Early morning and evening are best, especially when the water is calmer and you can see fish rolling. Live crabs, threadfins, large scaled sardines, pinfish, and pass crabs are all great tarpon baits. Around bridge and pass areas, fish the tide changes and watch for rolling fish, nervous bait, or birds working. Tarpon can be very tide dependent, so patience is important. Overall, the inshore bite around John’s Pass and the central west Florida Gulf beaches has been very productive when you match your plan to the conditions. Fish early or late, focus on moving water, pay close attention to bait, and adjust your tactics as the sun gets higher and the water warms. The stronger tide windows around the moon phase should help keep fish feeding, especially around the passes, bridges, mangrove points, grass flat edges, and deeper cuts.
Whether you are targeting snook on the beach, redfish along the mangroves, trout over the grass, mangrove snapper around structure, flounder near sandy potholes, pompano in the pass, tarpon along the beaches, or sharks around bait schools, there are plenty of great inshore fishing opportunities right now around Madeira Beach, John’s Pass, Tampa Bay, and the surrounding Pinellas County waters.

Graduation Trip Turns Into a Solid Mixed Bag Day
It was shaping up to be a perfect Saturday to get on the water. With a marine forecast calling for 5–10-knot west winds and 1–2-foot seas, we knew it was going to be a “Boils” kind of day. Tania and I decided to make it even more special by inviting Lizzy and Chason, two of her former students who had just graduated the week before. We figured it would be a great way to celebrate their accomplishment. We told them to meet us at the dock at 6:30 a.m., and Tania and I left the house around 5:45 to make sure we were there ahead of them. As always, we started the morning with a quick prayer on the way to the fishing center. When I came out of the bait shop with bait in hand, Tania let me know the kids had already arrived, 30 minutes early, and beat us there by about 10 minutes.
Once at the dock, Chason and Lizzy jumped right in and helped carry gear to the boat. As we were loading up, we ran into our buddy Gil, whom we hadn’t seen in a while. He said he hadn’t been out fishing in months and asked if he could follow us out. We were happy to have him join.
The run-out was absolutely beautiful. The wind was calm, the river looked like glass, and the sunrise reflecting off the water and buildings made it one of those mornings you don’t forget. We reached the Boils around 7:35 a.m., and conditions looked ideal, with clean water and calm seas. It felt like it had “permit bite” written all over it. Before we started fishing, Gil pulled up and asked me to pray over him
and his buddy and for the day, which I was honored to do.
Unfortunately, the fish didn’t get the memo.
There were plenty of boats out there, and overall, the bite was slow across the board. Between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m., we managed only about three fish, two for Tania and one for Chason, all of which were small, trash fish. We worked our usual 30g jigs, even tipping them with shrimp, and cycled through our normal techniques, but nothing seemed to turn the bite on.
With the action dead, we decided to head inshore toward the buoys to at least get the kids on some fish. We let Gil know, but he chose to head north of the inlet to try his luck there. Once we got set up on the buoys with knocker rigs and live shrimp, things picked up quickly. We started catching a mix of grunts, porkfish, lane snapper, short muttons, and even a Spanish mackerel. It wasn’t trophy fishing, but it was steady action that kept everyone engaged. By around 10:30 a.m., that bite had tapered off, so we gave the boils one more shot as the outgoing tide began to move. I was hopeful the current shift would fire things up, but after several drifts with no bites, it was clear
it wasn’t happening. From there, we moved to our Margate spot to finish filling the cooler. That proved to be the right call. Drifting jigs tipped with shrimp produced steady action. We boxed several large black margate, picked up some solid lane snapper, three quality mangrove snapper, and a number of mutton snapper in the 15–17-inch range, along with the usual assortment of bycatch. We stayed on that bite until we ran out of bait around noon.
We headed back to the dock with a mixed bag: five black margate, four lane snapper, three mangrove snapper, one croaker, and one Spanish mackerel. Back at the dock, Chason wanted to learn to fillet fish, so I handed him my backup knife and walked him through the process as I cleaned alongside him.
A few days later, Lizzy and Chason came over to enjoy the catch. I made fish tacos, which Chason loved. Lizzy isn’t much of a fish eater, so she and Tania went with chicken instead, but it was a great way to wrap up a memorable trip.

The snook are starting to gather in local inlets and beaches. Live baits and Doa 3” shad tail will get the strike. Early morning and late evening tend to provide the best bite for anglers. Anglers looking target fish inside sea walls are holding a plethora of snook as well, high outgoing tide best time to sight cast snook laying up.
Tarpon fanatics the Silver Kings are roaming the intercoastal waters and beaches as well. The bigger fish tend to be on the beaches early morning best time to locate the big tarpon. A Doa bait buster or pilchard best way to get the strike. Schooling fish on the inside anglers can sight cast to rolling fish. Live bait and Doa terror eyz excellent baits to get hooked up with the tarpon.
Anglers looking for a plethora of species, bottom fishing has been excellent for lane snapper, mangrove snapper, mutton snapper, and
yellowtail snapper. Also in the mix, jacks, blue runners, barracuda, grunts, and many other species are willing to take a live bait or dead bait on the bottom.
