Learning how to prepare for a hurricane can be intimidating and a little bit frightening, especially in a midst of a storm approaching. If you own a boat anywhere along the East Coast or the along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, you’ll likely have to deal with some direct or indirect effects associated with a hurricane. Being proactive and getting prepared before the hurricane or tropical storm hits is extremely important—not only for the safety of you and your loved ones, but also for the safety of your boat. In this post, we’ll explain how you can prepare yourself and your boat for an impending hurricane. We’ll also share tips for safety and boat recovery after a hurricane hits.
Hurricane Preparedness Checklist for Boat Owners
• Stay informed and up-to-date on weather reports.
• Trailer your boat, and head inland to a safer region that is out of reach from the storm.
• If you can’t transport your boat out of the area, then prepare to batten down the hatches.
• Remove anything that’s not permanently part of the boat.
• Apply extra fenders and double up on your normal dock line usage.
• Check that all hatches and portholes are secure.
• Drop an anchor fore and aft.
• Evacuate to a safe location.
4 Tips for Hurricane Safety: How to Prepare Your Boat
1. Stay Informed: One of the reasons that boaters love being out on the water is that it helps them destress and get away from life’s everyday troubles. However, if you live an area that’s exposed to hurricanes (or other extreme weather conditions), you need to be aware of upcoming storms. To stay updated on upcoming storm systems, download a reliable weather app, such as The Weather Channel, Dark Sky Weather, or AccuWeather. Of all the things you can do to keep safe when you’re in the path of a hurricane, advance warning is, by far, the most effective.
2. Get Out Of The Way: For most recreational powerboats, many times the best solution is to pull the vessel and head inland. This reduces the impact of the initial storm surge and the accompanying rain and hurricane force wind. The sooner you do this the better, because there will be many people who either don’t or can’t move their boats in advance. They will be the ones jammed onto back roads and highways when mandatory evacuation orders are issued.
3. Batten Down The Hatches: For boats that can’t be moved, it’s time to go old-school mariner and batten down those hatches. That phrase has survived modern times because it precisely describes what you need to do in a crisis situation.
First, remove anything that’s not permanently part of the boat. That means
cushions, toasters, life jackets, curtain rods and anything else that would fall off if the boat gets sideways. If you leave these items aboard, you not only risk losing them for good, but you could create dangerous projectiles for anyone or anything nearby during the worst parts of the storm.
Use plenty of extra fenders, used tires, or anything else that will absorb impact and lash them to the boat. Quadruple your normal line usage, springing to any and all potential contact points. Check that all hatches and portholes are secure and detach or cover windscreens.
Drop an anchor fore and aft and ensure they’re well set.
4. Don’t Try To “Ride” Out the Storm: When a storm is approaching, some boaters try to ride out the storm on their boat in open water. Although you may think this sounds better than evacuating or securing your boat, this won’t help you or your boat stay safe during hurricane winds and rain.
Although as boaters, our boats become an important part of our lifestyles and identities, they aren’t worth our safety. They can always be replaced, and you should put your personal safety first in the event of a hurricane.
9 Post-Hurricane Safety Tips for Boaters
• Once the hurricane has passed, it’s time to move into recovery mode. Below, you’ll find tips for safely recovering your boat and the necessary next steps you should take.
• Follow Flood Warnings: Don’t drive in flooded waters or ignore local flood advisories. Although it’s understandable that you want to start repairing your boat, it’s crucial that you do so safely. Once you’re cleared to go check on your boat, be aware of fallen power lines, debris, and other obstacles in your path.
• Be Careful in Floodwater: If you have to be in floodwater, it’s crucial to wear a life jacket at all times. As you likely know, having a life jacket on your boat is crucial, so you should have it on-hand anyways.
• Wash Your Hands and Treat Injuries Immediately: Floodwater can contain dangerous bacteria and chemicals that may put your health in danger. If you’re exposed to
floodwater, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and clean water. In addition, if you suffer any wounds or injuries, get them treated as soon as possible.
• Review Your Boat Insurance Policy: Most likely, you have some type of boat insurance policy in place. These policies typically cover boat damage caused by a hurricane, so you can rest easy. However, it’s still important to review your insurance policy to fully understand what your policy covers.
• Gather Necessary Supplies: As you prepare to repair and clean your boat after a storm, you should gather supplies that will make the process easier. These items include trash bags to dispose of debris, boots and gloves to move about your boat, duct tape to secure any cracks or broken parts, and cleaning supplies.
• Assess Your Boat for Damages: Before you check out your boat, confirm that your marina is open, docks are fixed, and that it is safe to visit. Once you receive confirmation, check on your boat as soon as possible. Remember to bring proof of boat ownership, as some marinas deal with looters after a hurricane.
• Immediately Remove Moisture and Dirt: To avoid further issues, begin removing any mud,
moisture, and debris from the boat. This will prevent mold and permanent damage.
• Check the Boat for Structural Damage, Leaks, and System Issues: Next, you should check the bilge to ensure that the boat hasn’t experienced any underwater damage, and identify any problems with the engine fuel systems, bilge pump, electronic systems, and other parts of the boat. Although you may be able to fix some issues yourself, it’s best to record damage for your insurance company.
• Preparing for the Worst: How to Handle a Sunk or Beached Boat: No boater wants to prepare for it, but you should consider how you’ll handle an unsalvageable or extremely damaged boat. Again, all damage should be documented for your insurance company, and you should contact them to determine next steps.

4 tablespoons olive oil
4 6-ounce Florida grouper fillets, cut into 1-inch pieces
5 cloves Florida garlic, peeled and coarse chopped
1 cup Florida shallots, thinly sliced
4 small dried red chiles
2 tablespoons fresh Florida ginger, minced
1 large Florida fennel bulb, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 cup Florida carrots cut into 1-inch pieces
1 tablespoon Thai green curry paste
1 cup unsweetened coconut milk
4 cups bottled clam juice or chicken stock
2 limes, juiced
1/2 cup fresh Florida cilantro leaves, chopped for garnish
Preparation
In a large soup pot, heat the oil over moderately high heat. Add grouper pieces and sauté until just browned. Remove from pan and set aside. Add the garlic cloves and shallots to the pan; cook over moderately high heat until softened, 3-5 minutes. Add the chilies, ginger, fennel, carrots and curry paste. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables begin to soften, about 5 minutes. Add the coconut milk and broth and bring to a boil. Cover and cook over low heat, stirring a few times, until the carrots are tender, about 10 minutes longer. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Add the grouper and lime juice; cover and simmer over low heat 5-7 minutes. Garnish with cilantro; serve hot.

With Florida leading the nation in both registered recreational vessels and boating-related accidents, boating safety education has never been more important.
To better serve the community, Flotilla 11-1 Clearwater offers the Boat America Safe Boating Course both in person in Clearwater and virtually via Zoom. These flexible learning options make it easier for boaters to meet Florida’s education requirements while accessing life-saving information.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a Boating Safety Education ID Card issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). This card is required for many operators and is often recognized by insurance companies for potential policy discounts.

FLORIDA BOATERS CAN NOW TAKE FREE STATE-APPROVED BOATING SAFETY COURSE At-home learning helps Florida boaters prepare for the water easily and conveniently. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has launched the only free interactive boating safety course for Florida recreational boaters. The course, which is approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and meets state boating safety education requirements, can be taken at the student’s own pace. After passing the exam, they can print their own certificate of completion for immediate use and will receive a lifetime card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.The course provides video demonstrations and sample common boating situations for students to interact with to better understand how to evaluate real-world instances. The learning experience includes storylines where the student “boats” to various places and includes interactive learning tools like flashcards and drag-and-drop features to enhance learning and retention. Course-takers will be able to design and name the virtual boat that takes them through the course and map how far they’ve “traveled” within it. In the state of Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must pass an approved boating safety course and have in his/her possession photographic identification and proof of boating safety education completion issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The online BoatUS Foundation boating safety course and exam are approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard as exceeding the minimum requirements for the National Recreational Boating Safety Program. “NASBLA approval of our Florida Boating Safety Course is a meaningful investment in boater safety, said Lynne O’Hearn, Program Manager at BoatUS Foundation. “Boater education is one of the most effective ways to prevent accidents, and this course gives Florida boaters the

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2025 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any
enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. Here is a list of the many things to consider before, during and after a storm.
• Review your boat insurance policy carefully and understand if you are required to take action in order to make a claim valid.
• If you keep your boat at a marina, find out what their storm policy is and take the proper steps.
• If you are going to move your boat, determine where ahead of time.
• Learn the storm surge history and elevation of your area.
• Learn safe routes inland and make plans of where you will evacuate to.
• Take inventory of the property on your boat and video, if possible. Plan what will be removed from the boat and what will stay.
• Keep all legal documents such as registration, insurance policy, marina rental agreement, etc. in one secure and dry container away from the vessel.
A watch means hurricane conditions pose a possible threat to the watch area within 36-hours.
• Frequently monitor radio, TV, NOAA Weather Radio, and/or hurricane hotline telephone numbers for official bulletins of the storm’s progress.
• Ensure access to emergency equipment such as a first aid kit, flashlights, and/or battery-powered radios.
• Move boats on trailers close to a building. Weigh them down. Lash securely to the trailer and use tie-downs to anchor the trailer.
• Anchored boats should be tied high, using a half hitch knot (loop knots slip). Use new or well-maintained line and chain for anchor rigging.
• Boats docked at marinas should have extra lines attached. Line lengths should be sufficient to accommodate excessive high water.
• Once your boat is secured, leave it and don’t return until the storm has passed.
• Fuel your car.
• Stock up on canned provisions
• Check supplies of special medicines and drugs.
• Secure lawn furniture and other loose material outdoors.
• Tape, board, or shutter windows to prevent shattering.
• Wedge sliding glass doors to prevent them from lifting from their tracks.
A warning means sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are expected in the warning area within 24-hours or less.
• Closely monitor radio, TV, NOAA Weather Radio, and/or hurricane hotline telephone numbers for official bulletins.
• Follow instructions issued by local officials and LEAVE IMMEDIATELY IF ORDERED TO DO SO.
• Plan to evacuate if you live on the coastline, an offshore island, or live near a river or in a floodplain.
If staying home in a sturdy structure on high ground:
• Board up garage and porch doors.
• Move valuables to upper floors.
• Bring pets in.
• Fill containers with several days supply of drinking water. Approximately one gallon per person, per day.
• Turn up refrigerator to maximum cold and don’t open unless necessary.
• Only use your phone for emergencies to save battery.
• Stay indoors on the downwind side of the house away from windows.
• Beware of the eye of the hurricane.
• Bring in small hand tools to aid you should your home be damaged during the storm.
If you are evacuating:
• Leave early in daylight if possible.
• Shut off water and electricity at main stations.
• Take small valuables and documents but travel light.
• Bring special foods or medicines if needed.
• Take sufficient money in small bills to defray certain expenses you may incur.
• Lock up house.
• Notify family and/or friends outside of the warned area of your evacuation plans.
• Drive carefully to designated shelter or other evacuation location by following recommended evacuation routes.
• Stay in your protected area until the storm has passed and local officials announce it is safe to travel.
• Drive carefully – watch for dangling electrical wires, undermined roads, and flooded low spots.
• Report broken or damaged water, sewer, and/or electrical lines.
• Use caution when re-entering your home.
• If your home has structural damage, do not enter until it is checked by building officials.
• Check for gas leaks.
• Check food and water for spoilage.
Early forecasts indicate a potentially below-average hurricane season for 2026. A lower number of storms does not necessarily mean a lower risk, as even a single storm can have a significant impact on the United States.
Sea Tow’s Franchise Field Representative, Michael Murphy, reminds boaters that preparation should never depend on predictions alone. “No matter what is forecast, preparedness is essential. Always have a plan in place far in advance of any potential storm. Weather conditions can shift quickly so don’t wait until the last minute – it’s best to know you’re ready before a storm threatens your area.”
Ensure You’re Insured. A boat that is damaged by a storm can cost far more to fix than a marine insurance policy costs annually. Review your boat policy’s requirements and be sure to comply with them. Boat owners whose insurance requires them to relocate their vessels out of a hurricane zone should do so by the date specified in their policy.
Man with a Plan. Most insurance providers require a formal written storm plan detailing where and how your boat will be secured during a major event. Designate a responsible person to execute the plan if you are out of town when a threat arises.
No Loose Cannons. Check with your marina, storage facility, or the owner of the private dock where your boat is moored to be sure the vessel can remain there during a storm. If it can stay, know the procedure for securing not only your boat, but those docked around it, as well. Any boat that breaks loose in a storm could potentially damage your boat.
Smooth Move. If you must move your boat from its current slip in the event of a storm, decide where you are going to haul it before the season even begins.
Shoot Your Boat. Make an inventory, preferably by video, of all valuable fixed items such as marine electronics that you cannot remove from your boat. Store all the boat’s documents, including your marine insurance policy, in a secure place not on the vessel.
Lastly, keep an eye on the sky and closely monitor local and national weather services, including NOAA Weather Radio and the National Weather Service’s National Hurricane Center (www.nhc.noaa.gov.)

As a charter captain I spend more time on the water than on land, and yes, I get asked the question,“don’t you ever get tired of taking people fishing?“ My answer is always the same, no. Many of my clients are new to fishing or to the area and they prefer that I pick up a rod and fish with them to pick up some quick tips on setting the hook and fighting a fish, so I do get to fish on many of the charters.
On the other hand there are days when I want to get closer to nature and the fish. I want and need some personal time to myself and that’s when kayaking comes into play. Several years ago, I had the chance to try kayaking with a friend who could not afford a boat and loved to fish the backwaters of Tampa Bay. He introduced me to the sport and today it has become my time away from the noisy world of outboard motors and it gives me a chance to fish areas that I normally could not get into with my boat. Kayaking is the most stealth fishing method I can think of for fishing other than standing on a shoreline.
Kayaks are ideal for fishing in the waters of Tampa Bay: they have a closed cockpit versus a canoe that has an open cockpit.

‘’OUT OF THE CREEKS’’ - Mayport Basin - Duval, FL
Did not fish the marsh creeks....’’they are filled with bait’’ that would seem like a good thing, huh? Well, it certainly hasn’t been. The action via redfish, and even just ‘’action’’ species, like summer time jacks, and ladyfish have been lacking in the shallows. And believe me, I’ve been ultra shallow.
So today I stayed in the river, and fished the ‘’main-stay’’ technique that if this doesn’t produce, not much else will, and that was ‘’float-rig’’ fishing rocks & docks in the St.. Johns River. I’m usually, anymore fed up with the river, because of the huge current, boat traffic, tug boats, ships, cone-heads, and amount of constant wakes. But today, it was not bad at all. I was surprised. Many spots, were comfortable to ‘’float-rig’’ fish, with the 4 dozen live shrimp, I brought along. I was feeling ‘’spendy’’, I guess because lure fishing wasn’t part of the plan at all.
No this wasn’t a charter trip with kids.....plenty o that is coming soon. Just had fishing buddy nick aboard. And he hooked up a good sized trout, but lost it at boat side within the first 10 minutes of
floats in the water. Yes, speckled sea trout, my favorite fish of all time! Which have been really lacking in the creeks, for me.
The new trout limits really suck. Florida doesn’t want you to be a fish eater in NE Florida. Because the 3 trout limit, between 15-19 inches, is my biggest complaint. I like ‘’’’’’trophies’’’’’’’. A 16” trout, does not excite me. But a 20’’ and larger does.... hopefully 5 pounds and larger!!! Today, i had a 22-23’’ 4 pounder. And that’s what I’m fishing for, personally. Or a 27’’ redfish, or a 2-4 pound flounder. But we had no redfish today. I may have hooked a few, but I’m just guessing, because whatever ate my live shrimp, became a casualty to the heavy structure i was fishing. I basically, got my butt handed to me, on a platter!
Summer Time! Weather has been very warm, moderate winds, water is dirty on the north end clean on the south.
Snook fishing has been excellent along sea walls. Snook are migrating to passes and beaches. Live baits and DOA 4” jerk have been excellent baits to entice snook. Night fishing has offered fantastic action on the fly rod and those looking to throw artificial baits like Rapala x raps. All Four species of snook have been abundant the past week.
Tarpon fishing is great anglers are having fun wrangling the silver king. Many anglers are having multiple shots at tarpon morning and afternoon. Live baits and DOA Terror eyz excellent for targeting tarpon.
Docks, seawalls and channels are teaming with jacks, snapper, drum, goliath grouper and many other species. Live baits worked near bottom or a DOA 3” shad tail gets the strike.
June offers fantastic fishing near Inlets, beaches, inter coastal and spillways. These areas will offer a plethora of species to target.
We did catch flounder. But thet were barely keepers at 14 inches. Of course we had plenty of ladyfish, which isn’t a bad thing. Since trout - highly sought after, and ladyfish, frequent the same areas in the hot months. And nick caught a 5 pound jak crevalle on his light tackle, fishing a float rig a bit deeper, off a rock pile.
I kept 4 trout, we lost 2, and released the largest. At the 22-23 inches and 4 pounds.

The inlets and beaches are great areas to target snook as they begin to spawn. Local inlets will offer plenty of snook and tarpon target. Live baits Rapala x raps DOA C.A.L. 4” jerk baits excellent choices for snook. DOA Bait busters great bait for target snook along drop offs and channels. Be sure to check the tides and locate good current for best ares to hook up with snook.
Anglers targeting tarpon can expect fantastic action along the beaches and inside the inlets. Tarpon can be seen rolling on the surface early in the morning as the sun is rising. DOA Bait busters and DOA terror eyz, worked near the bottom will get the silver kings chewing. Be sure to work in front of tarpon pods leading the fish, this helps not to spook the pod of tarpon. Do this and you will get your drag screaming.
The docks, seawalls and drop offs will hold plenty of fish for
anglers. Snook, tarpon, jacks, drum and tripletail can all be targeted. For fly fisherman this offers steady action as live chumming helps bring the predators boat side. Fly fishing is a blast and can be taught to novice anglers, whether it’s a 1 pound jack to a 20 pound tarpon, anglers can experience the thrill of fly fishing.
