CLEARWATER PROMOTES BOATING SAFETY
DURING NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEKCLEARWATER, FL — In recognition of National Safe Boating Week, members of U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 11-1 Clearwater will host several public boating safety events designed to help area boaters prepare for a safe summer on the water.
FREE Vessel Safety Checks – West Marine Clearwater - On Saturday, May 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Flotilla 11-1 members will partner with West Marine in Clearwater to offer another opportunity for FREE Vessel Safety Checks. Boaters are encouraged to bring their trailered boats to the parking lot for examination while also visiting the Auxiliary information table for boating safety resources and educational materials.
Boat America Boating Safety Class Offered via Zoom The flotilla will also present its popular Boat America boating safety course on May 23 and May 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day via Zoom. The virtual format allows participants to enjoy the class from the comfort of their homes while making the course accessible to seasonal residents and “snowbirds” who may have already left the area. Boat America is a comprehensive boating safety course covering topics such as navigation rules, required safety equipment, trailering, communications, weather, and emergency preparedness. “These activities are all about helping boaters enjoy the water safely and responsibly,” said representatives of Flotilla 111. “National Safe Boating Week is an important reminder that preparation, education, and proper safety equipment save lives.” For additional information about Vessel Safety Checks or the Boat America class, contact U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 11-1, Clearwater.

With Florida leading the nation in both registered recreational vessels and boatingrelated accidents, boating safety education has never been more important.
To better serve the community, Flotilla 11-1 Clearwater offers the Boat America Safe Boating Course both in person in Clearwater and virtually via Zoom. These flexible learning options make it easier for boaters to meet Florida’s education requirements while accessing life-saving information.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a Boating Safety Education ID Card issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). This card is required for many operators and is often recognized by insurance companies for potential policy discounts.

FLORIDA BOATERS CAN NOW TAKE FREE STATE-APPROVED BOATING SAFETY COURSE
- At-home learning helps Florida boaters prepare for the water easily and conveniently. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has launched the only free interactive boating safety course for Florida recreational boaters. The course, which is approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and meets state boating safety education requirements, can be taken at the student’s own pace. After passing the exam, they can print their own certificate of completion
for immediate use and will receive a lifetime card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.The course provides video demonstrations and sample common boating situations for students to interact with to better understand how to evaluate real-world instances. The learning experience includes storylines where the student “boats” to various places and includes interactive learning tools like flashcards and drag-and-drop features to enhance learning and retention. Course-takers will be able to design and name the virtual boat that takes them through the course and map how far they’ve “traveled” within it. In the state of Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must pass an approved boating safety course and have in his/her possession photographic identification and proof of boating safety education completion issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The online BoatUS Foundation boating safety course and exam are approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard as exceeding the minimum requirements for the National Recreational Boating Safety Program. “NASBLA approval of our Florida Boating Safety Course is a meaningful investment in boater safety, said Lynne O’Hearn, Program Manager at BoatUS Foundation. “Boater education is one of the most effective ways to prevent accidents, and this course gives Florida boaters the opportunity to build their skills to better enjoy Florida waterways safely.”

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630) 6745352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the openair benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2025 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license.
