Pumpout Nav
Pumpout Nav is a free mobile phone app. Boaters use it to find functional pumpouts, pumpout vessels, and port-a-potty dump stations. The app includes all details about the pumpout a boater could want to know such as how much it costs, the hours it’s open, the exact location in the marina, a date and time stamp for the last time the status was updated in the app, and more.
Boaters can report a problem with a broken pumpout directly through the app, or that the unit works. Both features update the status and timestamp. If a problem is reported, that will notify Florida Sea Grant staff, so they can work with the marina to get it functional again.
In addition to finding pumpouts, the app also has a ‘learn’ section. Here you will find all laws related to recreational vessel sewage management, videos on how to pumpout, regional information specific to Florida, and more.
Together we can ensure our network of pumpouts are easy to find and functional. Thank you for doing your part to keep our water clean.
This app is managed at the state level. It shows all publicly available pumpouts, it does not include private, member-only facilities.

Springtime Gags of Tampa Bay Groupers aren’t normally associated with fishing inside Tampa Bay; however, a small group of anglers have been able to master the art of catching legal size gags and red grouper in shallow water.
Tampa Bay is filled with small wrecks and artificial reefs, which is sponsored by Hillsborough County. Wrecks are marked on Coast Guard charts, while the artificial reef locations can be made available through the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County.
On a recent trip with some clients, we targeted a small wreck east of the ships channel, off of “F” cut in Tampa Bay. Yes, this wreck is shown on the chart! The story goes it stared taking on water sometime in the 50’s a barrage loaded with cable and pushed off the ships channel before it sank, I snorkeled this wreck years ago and I could see the coils of wire still setting on it deck around it were schools of sheepshead, mangrove snappers and grouper. The technique to catching gag grouper and mangrove snapper is simple.
First, find the wreck or reef, I prefer to use a software called Fish Reveal simple and fast to use and works every time it shows the contour of the bottom, wrecks and ledges like nothing I have ever used before you can sit at home and mark your spots not to waste time on your day of fishing.
The best fishing times
are about one hour before the change of tide or neap tide days. Second, anchor uptide within casting distance of the wreck or reef. Lastly, chum the gag and snappers away from their home, over the years I have tried using different types of chum (frozen and freeze dried) I found a product that seems to work well and it’s fairly inexpensive to use called Pro Fish Chum which comes in its own bag and ready to use without refrigeration . The idea of chumming is to bring the fish to you and away from the wreck or reef this technique increases your chances of landing your catch.
The preferred baits for catching grouper are live greenbacks or pinfish, especially during Spring and early Fall. Dead cut Spanish sardines tipped with a little bit of squid are tops in the winter months.
Tackles are about the same as in offshore fishing, except for lighter tackle. A Tampa Bay outfit consists of the following: a medium action Blackfin seven-foot spinning rod, Okuma Azores 50 spinning reel, and 30-pound test Fins braided line. I prefer to use a one-ounce egg sinker (Two ounces if the tide is strong) 30 inch-long 40-pound test mono (fluorocarbon is not needed) leader with a 4/0 circle hook. Jigs work great and I prefer to use them, but they can become pricey unless you can buy them in bulk.

Inshore Fishing Report
Sheepshead are still thick throughout the area and remain one of the most dependable inshore targets right now. Bridges, dock pilings, seawalls, jetties, and rock piles are all holding fish, especially anything with barnacle or oyster growth. Small pieces of shrimp, fiddler crabs, clam, or oyster on a light leader and a small hook remain the go-to setup. Use just enough weight to stay in contact with the structure, and remember that the bite is often subtle. When the water goes clearer, the anglers who stay patient and precise will catch more.
Trout are still heavy around the region and continue to provide some of the best action on the flats, along potholes, and near mangrove shorelines. During the day, focus on broken grass, sandy depressions, deeper troughs, and any edge where bait can get pushed. As conditions stabilize and warm, we often see trout spread onto deeper flats during the warmest parts of the day. Live shrimp, shrimp imitations, and small paddle tails worked slowly are excellent choices. If the water is crystal clear, do not overpower them with too much leader or too much weight, and remember to match the hatch with your lures too. If the bait around is smaller, use smaller lures matching the natural bait present in the area you are fishing.
Redfish are moving around more and acting more like spring fish. They are still around oyster bars, mangrove points, and grass flats, but they will begin roaming more and feeding in shorter, more aggressive windows as things warm. Look for mullet, nervous bait, and birds. Cut bait is a great option when they are laid up and feeding by scent, while jerkbaits, paddletails, and weedless artificials shine when you are covering water.
Flounder continue to show around sandy patches near structure, bottom transitions, potholes, and passes. Slow is still the deal. Bounce a soft plastic carefully across the bottom or drag a live shrimp along the sand and let the fish commit before you really come tight.
Snook are around and should start becoming more active as the warming trend continues. In the mornings, they may still be tucked into deeper canals, creek mouths, and dark muddy shorelines, but warmer afternoons should have them sliding outward toward points, cuts, and eventually the passes. Fish the solunar majors, fish the warmest part of the day, and keep your presentation clean and natural.

I take my bag of Pro Fish Chum or out fill it with fresh chopped cut green back sardines and start my chumming process it takes several minutes before the chum slick starts doing its magic. As the spadefish started coming to the surface, the mangrove snappers were darting in and out of the chum slick. I grabbed a rod, baited it with a large sardine and made a cast just short of the edge of the wreck and handed it to my client. Within minutes, both our rods were bent, and we were losing fish! Even though the gags out fished us that day, we were able to catch several gags two nice keeper red groupers and big gags although season is closed for gags the excitement was there we also landed some nice mangrove snappers and some spanish mackerel, thanks to our surface lines. Stay on top of regulations as far as size, bag limits and closed season.

Fishing Tips
• Snook: Use live baits like greenbacks, threadfins, and shrimp, or try flair hawks and soft plastics at night.
• Redfish: Look for them around mangroves, oyster bars, and flats, and use dead baits during higher tides.
• Trout: Target them with soft plastics, white bait, and shrimp around deeper flats and potholes.
• Tarpon: Target them during the full moon with crab flushes, making it an ideal time to target them.
• Flounder: Find them near sandy bottoms and structures, biting on bottom baits.
• Pompano: Be prepared to move frequently to stay on their bite.
• Sharks: Use big dead baits in areas with moving water.

They’re coming! Big yellowmouth trout, 18 inchers, and many filled with roe. I love when these fish show up in mayport “thick”, no limit, no size limit (we don’t bother with 12 inchers)
Today had 18 plus inch fish. As usual, we had to work for them. And had a bit of a ride to get to them. “light tackle fun” and all we used was “dead shrimp”....... EZ as, (as they say in new zealand)

pier! I’m catching, the ‘’silver scourge fish’’, aka: ladyfish, in a few creeks, already And the trout already vacated a few winter spots.
As long as the trout keep chokin’ down the “matrix shads” like this one did. (the cost of live shrimp isn’t worth 3 trout per person)
I guess I’ll have to put up with the ‘’’’Florida fish communists’’’’, basically shutting the door on “speckled trout charters”

Our Saturday did not unfold the way we originally planned. Tania and I made the difficult decision to cancel our Reel Blessed surf fishing event due to the weather forecast. We never want someone’s first introduction to beach fishing to be standing in the rain. First experiences matter.
Since we both had rain gear ready and a free morning, we decided to pivot.
Because we were scheduled to be on the beach, we did not have a boat lined up. Still, I had a feeling the forecast might cause a cancellation. Sure enough, at 4:15 PM on Friday, I got the call that a boat had opened up for this morning. God’s timing is always perfect.
On the way to the Fishing Center around 6:00 AM to pick up shrimp and ice, Tania and I said our morning prayer. We asked for protection over our day, for the Lord to open our eyes to see His wonderful creations, and if it was His will, to allow us to catch a few fish to bring home. God never fails us.
I was hopeful the Fishing Center might have sand fleas, one of the best baits for sheepshead in our area, but their supplier has been having trouble getting them. Shrimp would have to do.
away, a light rain began to fall. Once we cleared the inlet, the rain tapered off, and the ocean lay beautifully. The seas were completely flat, making for a quick run north along the beach to one of our favorite sheepshead holes. Reports had been strong, and we were hopeful.
We started bottom fishing with 1/0 hooks on knocker rigs tipped with shrimp. Tania landed the first fish of the day, a solid porkfish. Not our target, but always a welcome start. She followed that with four or five fish, mostly small gobies that were determined to pull her straight into the rocks.
My first fish was the first sheepshead on the boat, but at 11 inches, it was just short and went back to grow.
After a few drifts and steady pecks from bait thieves, Tania asked me to tie on one of her jigs. That changed everything.
Her first drop with a 30g slow pitch jig from Coastal Buzz Jigs, orange with glow crackles, resulted in a beautiful 13inch keeper sheepshead. That was the key. We both switched to the same 30g orange glow crackle jigs, and the bite turned on.
We also caught a mix of other species, including a surprise 20-inch snook that Tania landed. We have never caught a snook in that area while targeting sheepshead, so that one definitely caught us off guard.
On top of the fishing, the Lord answered every part of our prayer. We made it back to the dock safely. We saw sea turtles and dolphins along our run. We experienced calm seas. And we brought home fish to make another batch of sheepshead chowder.
As we were driving home, the skies opened up, and severe thunderstorms rolled through off and on for the rest of the day. The timing could not have been better.
What started as a canceled event became a peaceful, blessed morning on the water. Protection. Perspective. Provision.
We arrived at the dock around 6:30 AM and loaded up. As we eased
By 10:00 AM, we had run out of shrimp, but it did not matter. Five quality sheepsheads were in the cooler, ranging from 13 inches up to a solid 17inch fish. Exactly what we had prayed for.

FLORIDA BOATERS CAN NOW TAKE FREE STATE-APPROVED BOATING SAFETY
COURSE - At-home learning helps Florida boaters prepare for the water easily and conveniently. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has launched the only free interactive boating safety course for Florida recreational boaters. The course, which is approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and meets state boating safety education requirements, can be taken at the student’s own pace. After passing the exam, they can print their own certificate of completion for immediate use and will receive a lifetime card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.The course provides video demonstrations and sample common boating situations for students to interact with to better understand how to evaluate real-world instances. The learning experience includes storylines where the student “boats” to various places and includes interactive learning tools like flashcards and drag-and-drop features to enhance learning and retention. Coursetakers will be able to design and name the virtual boat that takes them through the course and map how far they’ve “traveled” within it. In the state of Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must pass an approved boating safety course and have in his/her possession photographic identification and proof of boating safety education completion issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The online BoatUS Foundation boating safety course and exam are approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard as exceeding the minimum requirements for the National Recreational Boating Safety Program.

7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD
WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630) 674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUARTDespite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2025 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in

SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. Fort Lauderdale, FL – Cast lines, catch fish and learn from the pros at the South Florida Ladies, Let’s Go FishingUniversity, April 17-19 in Fort Lauderdale. Designed to build skills and confidence in a welcoming environment, the award-winning “No Yelling School of Fishing” teaches women how to fish offshore through classroom instruction, hands-on practice and optional charter fishing.
The weekend begins Friday evening with an informal networking meet-and-greet (location to be announced). Saturday’s classroom and skill sessions will be held at the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, 221 SW 3rd Ave., Fort Lauderdale - a sponsor committed to expanding participation in fishing and boating.
Beginning at 9 a.m., attendees will learn Fishing Basics with Capt. Lee Lavery, Offshore Fishing with Capt. Jeanne Towne and Conservation with Founder Betty Bauman. Afternoon hands-on practice includes knot tying, dehooking, proper releasing techniques, bait rigging, spin casting, cast netting and more, concluding at 4:30 p.m.
On Sunday, participants may register for an optional half-day offshore charter targeting sailfish, mahi, tuna, wahoo, mackerel, snapper and more, followed by a fillet demonstration.
Registration starts at a new low price of $69 and includes $25 worth of gifts. Optional half-day offshore charter fishing is $210. Teens are welcome to attend with mothers. More than 10,000 women have graduated from the program nationwide.
