Creamy Garlic-Butter & Basil Florida Clams

Ingredients:

• 2 to 3 dozen Fresh Florida hardshell clams, rinsed

• 1 cup Florida cherry tomatoes, halved

• 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, chopped fine

• 1 ½ lemons, juiced

(plus more lemon wedges for garnish)

• 2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped

(plus more whole basil leaves for garnish)

• ¼ cup fresh scallions, rinsed and sliced small

• 1 teaspoon all-purpose Florida seafood seasoning blend

• 1 teaspoon unsalted butter

• 1 cup heavy whipping cream

• ¾ cup low-sodium vegetable broth

• Pinch of crushed red chili flakes for heat if desired

• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Preparation:

Preheat a large high-sided pan with a lid over medium heat. Add the butter, garlic, seasoning blend and chili flakes. Lightly cook the garlic until fragrant and soft. Add the vegetable broth and bring ingredients to a boil. Carefully add the clams to the boiling broth. Cover the pan with a lid and slightly reduce the heat to a simmer. 5 Reasons Why Boating is Great Exercise

Ever consider boating as a form of exercise? You may not know, but boating offers countless benefits, including improved fitness. Like many hobbies, it requires you to move your body, often for hours on end. Whether you’re a new or experienced boater, it can be an effective way to keep yourself in shape without spending hours at the gym.

Let’s take a closer look at why boating makes such a great workout.

What Are the Benefits of Exercising on a Boat?

1. Cardio Exercise

Activities such as rowing and paddling can do wonders for your cardiovascular health. Not only will they elevate your heart rate, but they may also improve blood flow and strengthen your heart. Just like running or cycling, boating can help you reduce the risk of obesity, hypertension, and heart disease. Essentially, it’s a fun way to support a healthy heart.

2. Muscle Engagement

Rowing, steering, and maneuvering require you to engage several muscle groups at once. These include your back, core, shoulders, arms, and legs. If you set sail regularly, you’ll strengthen these muscles and even improve your muscle tone over time. Whether you’d like better core stability or a stronger lower or upper body, boating can help you get there.

3. Improved Flexibility

When you’re out on the water, you have to shift and move your body frequently. This can help you become more flexible and agile, both of which are important if you’d like to increase your range of motion and reduce your risk of falls. Greater flexibility may also promote stability and coordination, which are essential for preventing injuries.

4. Low Impact Movements

You don’t have to run a marathon every day to stay fit and healthy, and avid boaters are living proof of that. Unlike many forms of exercise, boating is low-impact, meaning it’s easy on the joints and ideal for those with joint pain or previous injuries. You can paddle, row, or sail without placing too much pressure on your knees and other body parts. Plus, you’ll be able to work your entire body without putting too much impact on a single joint.

5. Calorie Burning

Burning calories is one of the keys to maintaining a healthy weight. Activities like rowing and watersports may also allow you to burn a significant amount of calories per hour. When paired with a nutritious diet and reduced stress, boating may be the ultimate weight-loss solution.

How to Exercise on a Boat: If you’re looking to up your fitness game while boating, here are several activities that can allow you to do just that.

Sailing

Sailing is a lot of fun, but it also takes work. Think about it. You have to adjust sails, hoist lines, and move around. You’ll improve your strength and balance while having a blast on the water.

Watersports

When it comes to watersports, there is no shortage of options. Whether you pursue waterskiing, paddleboarding, tubing, kayaking, canoeing, kitesurfing, or any other thrilling sport, you’ll give yourself a killer cardio and full-body workout.

Fishing

Boat Yoga

If you prefer more gentle exercise, you can’t go wrong with yoga on a boat deck. All you need is some relaxing music, a yoga ball, and some resistance bands. You’ll improve your flexibility and balance while calming your mind.

Swimming

Swimming is another low-impact exercise that works your entire body while remaining gentle on the joints. Get off the boat every once in a while to swim around, strengthen your muscles, and burn some calories.

Fishing might seem like a leisurely boating activity, but it can also strengthen your upper body while improving coordination. Casting and reeling require you to work your core, arms, and shoulders.

Boating for Fitness:

Turn Every Outing into a Workout

At the end of the day, your health is the most important thing. Fortunately, boating regularly can help you make it a priority while taking in the fresh air and making memories with your loved ones. It’s the ideal way to maintain a healthy weight, reduce stress levels, and improve your overall mental health.

Dometic’s new CSX Series builds on proven marine cooling technology — evolving the way pre-insulated galley lockers are transformed into energy-smart refrigeration. This self-contained system is designed for sportfishing vessels, sailboats, power cruisers, and luxury pontoons — ideal for boaters seeking efficient cooling performance tailored to their space, needs, and lifestyle.

Dometic, a leading outdoor tech brand, has launched its new CSX Series self-contained refrigeration system. This innovative solution turns any pre-insulated galley compartment, storage locker or fish box into an energy efficient refrigerator/freezer compartment to keep food, beverages, or the day’s catch icy cold in real-world marine conditions.

Engineered to accommodate storage volumes from 60L up to 400L, the CSX Series’ fully integrated design combines a high-efficiency compressor, fan-cooled evaporator, and digital temperature control in one space-saving unit.

The CSX Series’ compact footprint makes it ideal for use in the space-restricted galleys, boxes, and storage areas commonly found on today’s boats. Sailors, anglers, or cruisers can simply drop it in, connect 12/24VDC power and enjoy a space-saving

refrigerator or freezer without the complexity of remote couplings.

Leveraging Dometic’s proven refrigeration technology, the CSX Series features fan-assisted airflow to accelerate cool-down times and maintain consistent temperatures—even in dynamic environmental conditions. Built-in LED compartment lighting enhances visibility and provides easier access to contents, whether used indoors or outdoors.

In addition, Dometic’s integrated digital temperature control and precise thermally sensitive sensor delivers optimal cooling performance and energy efficiency across all operating conditions. A standout feature is the automatic defrost logic embedded in the electronics, which helps prevent ice buildup on the evaporator.

This new solution uses up to 15% less power than similar, previous models and operates using Dometic’s low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerant, making it a futurecompliant and more sustainable option for today’s technology laden boats.

To meet the needs of boaters, Dometic’s CSX Series is available in refrigerator (CXS200 up to 200L, CSX400 up to 400L) and deepfreezer versions (CSX150FZ up to 150L freezing capacity).

“This innovative solution gives boat builders and boaters around the world an effective, practical and energy efficient way to turn a vessel’s unused galley space or storage boxes into high-performance refrigeration,” said Eric Fetchko, Dometic Marine Segment President. “We are driven to innovate new ways to enhance the boating lifestyle by providing comfort and convenience on the water. Our new CSX Series is a smarter and better way for boaters to keep their provisions cold and fresh whether they’re fishing, coastal cruising or voyaging far offshore,” added Fetchko. For

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630) 674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. To get more information or to schedule an inspection, contact Howard Bush at (305)731-3580. Anyone interested is invited to attend. Contact Flotilla Commander Howard Bush for more information at (305)731-3580.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART -

Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2025 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained

VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. No record of any possible deficiencies will be reported to the USCG, state agency or any other authority. Want to know more about this complimentary Vessel Safety Check program? Contact Peter Burns at (772) 486-2684 or burnspet@aol.com. St. Lucie River Power Squadron, one of more than 300 squadrons nationwide, also offers safe boating classes to the public. Check on their website, www.slrps.org, when classes will resume. Information about the parent organization is available at www.usps.org.

Winter Bait Stealers Sheepshead December typically marks the beginning of the season for Sheepshead (Archosargus probatocephalus), an inshore member of the porgy family. Sheepshead are a common North American species, found from Cape Cod to Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. After the summer months, targeting Sheepshead provides an alternative to catching species such as snook, redfish, and trout. In Tampa Bay, Sheepshead are sometimes referred to as “convict fish” due to their ability to remove bait without being detected.

Sheepshead primarily feed on shrimp, fiddler crabs, small crabs, bloodworms, sand fleas, and barnacles. Their diet leads them to frequent areas around docks, bridges, and similar structures where crustaceans are present. On light tackle, Sheepshead are known for their strength, particularly larger females that can exceed 12 pounds. These females migrate from the Gulf of Mexico to spawn, typically arriving between early and mid‑December and departing by early March, depending on water temperatures.

Where and How to Catch Them: Fishing techniques should be adjusted according to location. When targeting sheepshead near bridges and docks, utilize medium spinning tackle equipped with 15‑pound test braided line and a 25‑pound test fluorocarbon leader paired with a #1 hook. Fish inhabiting these areas are typically smaller males, generally weighing between 1 and 3 pounds. Larger female specimens tend to reside in deeper sections of the bay, frequenting ledges, wrecks, and rock piles at depths ranging from 12 to 30 feet and averaging between 4 and 12 pounds. For these larger fish, it is advisable to employ heavier equipment, such as a 7‑foot medium‑heavy action rod matched with a larger spinning reel, rigged with 20‑pound test braided line

and a 25‑pound test fluorocarbon leader, secured with a loop knot to a 1/0 hook.

A Texas rig setup is recommended, with the sinker positioned on the leader just above the hook. Incorporating a small glow soft bead can prevent the sinker from contacting the knot and may help attract larger fish. Sinker weight should be selected based on water depth and tidal movement, beginning at 3/8 oz and increasing up to 1 oz as conditions require.

Lighter weights enhance bite detection, while insufficient weight may cause bait to drift off the bottom, reducing opportunities for sheepshead to locate and consume it.

Check list:

• Check your hooks often the sheep type teeth tend to break the circle hooks at the bend or tip making for lost fish.

• Avoid soft tip rods. You need pressure on them to set the hook.

• Keep your rod tip almost touching the water when fishing from a boat, no slack line or you will not feel the bite.

• Avoid large baits, they have small mouths.

• Replace or sharpen the hook often. They need to be sharp.

• When fishing under a bridge or along seawall, scrape the barnacles. This creates a chum slick, drawing sheepshead to the source of food. It is like having a Taco Bus show up.

• Always have the point of the hook exposed.

Tackle:

• Blackfin 7’ medium and medium heavy spinning rods.

• Blackfin4000 saltwater spinning reels.

• FINS braided line 20‑pound test. I

prefer white or yellow line for sheepshead fishing.

• Lee Fisher Sports 25-pound fluorocarbon leader. The leader should be at least 30‑inches long.

• Lee Fisher Sports Triden #1 or 1/0 circle hooks. Three most important things to look for in a hook is strength, size, and sharpness.

Favorite Baits: Live shrimp, fresh dead shrimp, fiddler crabs, bloodworms, and sand fleas. Fiddlers and sand fleas work best, but lack of time on my part to catch them drops down to second best with live shrimp and bloodworms. Since sheepshead are bait stealers, regular shrimp works best.Do not waste money on medium or large shrimp, it is just more bait for them to steal.

Favorite Artificial Baits: Fishbites strips in either sand flea or shrimp flavor.

Locations: From shore, bridges, docks, and rocky areas. On the water, their favorite spots are artificial reefs, wrecks (16 in Tampa Bay), ledges and rocky bottom. Remember, the deeper water holds the bigger fish.

Fishing for the thieves of Tampa Bay is a fun and rewarding experience. Hooking and fighting an 8 or 10lb sheepshead will put a big smile on your face, and if you have kids, they will love the experience.

Inshore Fishing Report

Trout — Speckeled trout have been spreading across the flats and sliding shallower with cooling trend overall. Expect action from the beaches and passes to the upper bay— edge lines, grass flats with sand potholes, and oyster bar points are all producing. Free‑line live shrimp or small whitebait on light leaders, or swim a 3–4” soft plastic paddletail on a 1/8–1/4 oz jighead. Night sessions around dock and bridge lights have been outstanding— work the up‑current edge of the light cone and let the current do the presentation.

Redfish — The red bite remains steady with small pods roaming flats, mangrove edges, and island points. On slower tides, soak cut baits (mullet, ladyfish, pinfish, threadfin) in ambush lanes. When mullet schools push through, swap to a gold spoon or weedless jerk shad and cover water. At night, bump soft plastics along bottom around lighted docks.

Snook — Snook are back in the upper bays and back bay waters in the creeks, rivers, and bayous. They’re choosy on weak flow; fish the solunars, find shade and moving water, and keep baits natural. Live shrimp, small pinfish, or a downsized jerkbait will coax bites. Target sun‑warmed shoreline pockets with current seams.

Flounder — We’re seeing a consistent trickle on sandy edges, potholes adjacent to structure, and the beach troughs. Hop a 1/4 oz jig with a strip of cut bait or a shrimp/soft plastic tight to bottom—slow is the program.

Sheepshead — Plenty around hard structure—docks, piers, bridges, jetties—especially where barnacles and oysters are thick. Scale down: small hooks, light leaders, tiny bits of shrimp, fiddlers, or oyster crabs. Let the

bait sit tight to the piling.

Mackerel — Spanish are less prolific but a few are still ripping through deeper edges, jetties, and bridge spans where bait stacks.

Fast, flashy metals and spoons shine; with live bait, use long‑shank hooks and keep leaders light for more strikes.

Nearshore Fishing Report

Spanish & Kings — Mackerel were thick along the beach runs and channel edges but have thinned out a lot. However, keep an eye out and watch birds and surface showers. Kings are still around in pulses; keep a flatline out and a pitch rod ready. Troll spoons or plugs to locate, then switch to live bait once you’re on them.

Hogfish — Cooling trends have fired up hogs on 40–70 ft smaller ledges, hard bottom and edges. The most consistent setup remains a long (10–15 ft) 30 lb fluoro topshot to 20–30 lb braid, knocker rig with 1–2 oz egg sinker, and a 3/0–4/0 hook, baited with live shrimp. Fish smaller ledges, swiss‑cheese hard bottom, and shell transitions. Be patient—porgies and grunts will nibble first, then the hogs slide in.

Lane Snapper — Solid in 60–100 ft. They’ll eat squid, cut threadfin, or live shrimp; the larger lanes lean toward shrimp and cleaner threadfin strips. Keep baits compact. Mangrove Snapper — Hit‑or‑miss inshore of 70 ft, better nearer the deepest near‑shore contours. Small double‑snell rigs with smaller threadfin pieces on 30–40 lb leader will draw strikes when they’re finicky.

Red Grouper — Occasional near shore, more consistent as you creep deeper. Use frisky pinfish or bigger dead baits on 40‑60lb leaders; expect to cull through shorts before stick‑worthy keepers.

Offshore Fishing Report

Red Grouper & Scamp — Work potholes, ledges, and broken hard bottom starting around the 100–140 ft band. Big dead baits (bonita strips, whole squid, boston mackerel) and lively 5–6″ pinfish shine. Match hook size to bait (6/0–9/0) on 60–80 lb leader. Scamp favor medium pinfish and a slightly subtler presentation—don’t overlook slow‑pitch jigs.

Mangrove & Yellowtail — Mangos are steady with quality fish—double‑snell cut threadfin on 40 lb is the workhorse, but live pinfish cherry‑pick the studs. Yellowtails are showing on the deeper sets; lighten leaders (30–40 lb), use small squid strips or trimmed threadfin.

Muttons — The mutton bite has been strong by central west florida standards—target deep water ledges, peaks and rock piles with a fish‑finder rig, 40–50 lb leader, and medium pinfish or cut threadfins.

Triggers, Vermillions, Porgies, Almacos — Triggers want 2” chew‑strips of squid or bonita on smaller hooks; vermillions and porgies are eager on cut squid or threadfin. Almacos mix in over higher relief—jigs or live baits both work.

Pelagics — Keep a flatline or two out while you bottom fish—blackfin, kings, the odd mahi or wahoo have been sliding through. A flashy jig or live threadfin is tough to beat when they pop. Lately its been a solid showing of blackfin tuna this past week.

When the Seas Get Sporty, Faith Keeps Us Steady – Fort Pierce Fishing Adventure

Each morning, as Tania and I drive to fish, we say a prayer. We ask the Lord to bless us with protection on the water, to open our eyes to see His wonderful creations, and, if it’s His will, to let us catch a few fish along the way. That simple prayer centers our hearts before every adventure, reminding us that each trip is a gift, not a guarantee.

Saturday morning greeted us with a soft pink sunrise that painted the horizon as we loaded the boat at 6:30 a.m. The air was crisp, the northeast wind brushed the surface at ten knots, and although the forecast promised calm two-foot seas, the ocean had other plans. The five-second interval created a choppy, rolling start, a bit sportier than my older bones prefer, but the excitement of the day pushed us onward.

We made our first stop at the spot where we caught that little six-inch croaker last week, but nothing was biting. By 7:30 a.m., we moved toward the Boils, where at least ten boats were already fishing the west end. Tania and I decided to start on the east side near the buoy. The water was murky, but we made drift after drift, working our

30-gram slow-pitch jigs through the current. The orange jig was the most effective, attracting more bites than the others. Around 9:00, we shifted to the west end, and just as I was about to head for our snapper spot, a nearby boat landed two beautiful permit. That was all the encouragement Tania needed to stay a little longer! Unfortunately, the murky water made the jigs less effective; the boat with crabs clearly had the right bait for the day. The Boils were full of life, with sharks jumping everywhere and the Spanish mackerel thick. Tania also caught a few nice bluefish, including the largest I had ever seen in Florida, around 7-8 lbs.

By 10:30 a.m., we headed to our bottom spot and switched to shrimp on 2-ounce jig heads. Four dozen shrimp went quickly with only three fish caught, but once Tania picked up her jig again, the bite picked up. We both caught black margates, grunts, a baby bonnethead, and a baby gafftopsail catfish. But as usual, Tania out-fished me at this location.

I couldn’t resist tossing a few six-inch jacks we caught at our snapper spot, near the north side of the Fort Pierce Inlet, hoping for a snook or tarpon strike, but the rough water chased us off after half an hour. Even

Inshore fishing this month provides a variety of species to target throughout the water column. Live bait and artificial enthusiast will all enjoy drag screaming action.

Snook season closes December 15th, but that should not stop anglers from targeting them. Snook fanatics can find stellar action near deep channels, docks, and sea walls. Live bait, shrimp, DOA 3” shrimp and DOA C.A.L. 3 inch shad, great baits to get the strike. Back bays and canals are great areas to locate snook and it is not uncommon to catch four different species of snook. Night time fishing also a great choice to target snook, fly fishing offers many strikes and drag screaming action.

Tarpon fishing continues to shine, the silver king will be plentiful in bays, canals and channels. Live bait shrimp and mullet drifted with the tide best technique to hook a tarpon, artificial enthusiasts can also get in on the action. A DOA 3 inch shrimp in glow, DOA terror Eyz and a Rapala sub walk entice strikes. Typical size of the tarpon range from 5 to 50 pounds.

Jacks, drum, trout, bluefish

and lady fish all roam the flats and channel edges, look for bait schools or birds in the area helping to locate fish. A good bottom machine like the humminbird solix with side scan and down imaging helps pinpoint fish on or near the bottom. Live shrimp freelined, 3” DOA Shrimp or a DOA C.A.L. 3 inch shad in glow holographic will get you hooked up.

Well that is the fishing report for the Palm Beach, Jupiter area. I hope you all enjoyed so get out there and get hooked up. Tight Lines! Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all.

so, we were content. Between the pods of dolphins, sea turtles, and sharks passing by, there was no shortage of life on the water. We made it back to the dock by 1:00 p.m., tired but grateful for another beautiful day doing what we love most, fishing together.

While we take our gear to the car, Rory, the gentleman we met in Texas, came up and said, “See, I told you I was from Ft. Pierce.” It was nice to see him again, and I’m glad he made it back to Ft Pierce with the boat he was transporting.

Tania and I send our best wishes to all our fellow anglers. May your time on the water be safe, blessed, and filled with tight lines and good memories. Until next time, keep casting, keep believing, and keep chasing those dreams on the water.
