Grilled Florida Swordfish Steaks with Key Lime Sauce
Ingredients:
• 2 (6-ounce)
Florida swordfish steaks
• 1/8 cup freshly squeezed
Florida Key lime juice, plus extra quartered Key limes for garnish
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 2 tablespoons all-purpose seasoning, divided
• 2 tablespoons fresh herbs (such as parsley or thyme) chopped fine (plus more for garnish), divided
• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
• 1 ½ cups mayonnaise
• 1 teaspoon stone ground or Dijon mustard
Preparation:
Prepare grill (gas or charcoal). Evenly drizzle 1 tablespoon olive oil on both swordfish steaks and season with salt, pepper, 1 tablespoon fresh herbs and 1 tablespoon all-purpose seasoning. Place fish on grill (or in grill pan) over direct heat and cook for 3 to 4 minutes depending on thickness. Flip and cook for additional 3 minutes or until cooked through. Remove from heat and set aside.
In a small mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon fresh herbs, 1 tablespoon all-purpose seasoning, Key lime juice and mustard. Thoroughly mix all ingredients to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Serve the grilled Florida swordfish steaks with the Key lime sauce. Garnish with quartered Key limes and extra fresh herbs.

targeted species. The course also discusses how activities such as anchoring on coral reefs or creating propeller scars in seagrass beds can harm sensitive habitats and offers tips for minimizing those impacts.

GPS/NAVIGATION FOR MARINERS – US COAST GUARD APPROVED BOATING SAFETY COURSE - PORT CHARLOTTE, FL – NOVEMBER 8, 2025 – The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a GPS/Navigation for Mariners course designed to enhance the navigational skills of local boaters. This comprehensive, one-day course will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM at the South Gulf Cove HOA Building, located at 14859 Ingraham Blvd, Port Charlotte, FL 33981. Taught by experienced U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Instructors, this course will provide attendees with essential knowledge of traditional and modern navigational techniques. Instructors familiar with Gasparilla Sound, Pine Island Sound, Boca Grande, South Charlotte Harbor, South Gulf Cove, and surrounding waterways will guide participants through both fundamental and advanced navigation principles. UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. Winter Fishing Negative Tides Methods Causes of Negative Tides: Negative tides predominantly occur during the winter months, typically around the new and full moons, resulting in exceptionally low water levels—these are often indicated as minus tides on tide charts. Such tides represent instances when the low tide is significantly lower than usual. Negative tides pose challenges for boaters. On Florida’s Gulf Coast, a combination of strong northerly winds and high-pressure systems following a cold front can further drive water away from the shore, exacerbating these effects.
Lessons from negative tides: During lower, clearer winter tides, hidden features like cuts, oyster bars, rocky bottoms, and deep-water grass flats are revealed.
Advantages of negative tides: Negative tides concentrate fish in certain areas such as depressions and cuts on the flats, deep mangrove cuts and old concrete blocks anddebris used by the homeowner as their own mini reef under their boat dock. There are a few reasons why the fish concentrate here. For one, they don’t have anywhere else to go! Often, the flats where these fish hold most of the year will be dried up, only to be enjoyed by the wading birds. I’ve caught snook and redfish out of a depression on a flat that was almost completely dry.
Fishing during negative tides: fishing negative tides, identifying the target species for the day determines where to fish. Trout can be found around potholes on flats, while redfish or snook may be located near docks. Exposed rock piles, seawalls, and rocky shorelines
absorb heat as the sun rises, increasing water temperatures by up to 3 degrees. This temperature change can be beneficial for species such as sheepshead, redfish, and trout, particularly on colder days.
Fishing the flats: Arrive at least an hour before the negative tide and position your boat within casting distance of the hole or if fishing a cut make sure you are set up to be able to move from the shallowest to deepest part of cut as the tide drops allowing you to cover more area.
Tackle: is dependent on the species, location and whether you are using live bait or artificial bait.
Live Bait: Shrimp for me is best used when fishing around docks and deep drops around edges of channels. Here is where I find the redfish, sheepshead and flounder most of the time.
Artificial Bait: I lean towards fishing shallowwaters potholes, edges of creeksfor trout most common species in winter months. Techniques: Winter is one of the best times to fish with artificial baits.
Soft Baits: such as Saltwater Assassin on a jig head the weight depends on depth of water, wind conditions and whether you are fishing on edges of the drop or over grass beds. My go to weight 1/8-ouncecuts along the edges of the flats, ¼-ounce when fishing deep potholes like some of the bomb holes

Anglers can also experience the thrill of Marco Island red fishing in these backwaters, with a healthy population of “slot-sized” redfish providing consistent action.

Floats: are another great tool for Trout fishing in the winter especially the weighted type such as the 4-Horsemen an excellent float for windy days and the noise they produce drives trout crazy. Here is a trick I have been doing for over 30 years during the winter months. Attach a 2/0 J Hook to the swivel at the bottom of the float trout seem to hit the float as a top water plug thus hooking two at a time.

Tania and I made it out on Saturday morning and arrived at the dock around 6:45 AM. With a steady 10 knot east wind and 4–5-foot seas, we decided to stay inshore for the day. The east wind had pushed in a lot of weeds and turned the water a root beer color, making visibility poor. Even so, the low humidity and cool breeze made it a pleasant morning to be on the water.
We started off fishing around the Turn Basin, both of us throwing 30g jigs. After a short while, Tania began tipping her jig with a piece of shrimp, and that turned out to be the ticket. The bites came quickly, but they were all catfish, some hardheads and a few gafftopsail. After her fourth one, we decided to make a move.
Our next stop was south of the South Causeway Bridge at the concrete pilings by the water treatment plant. It was the top of the incoming tide, so we switched over to live shrimp on the bottom. I caught a few different snapper species, but unfortunately, all were undersized. Once the tide went slack, the bite completely shut down.
We moved over to the Smithsonian Dock next. I started hooking up again pretty quickly and managed to land a solid 20-inch snook. Tania was getting plenty of bites too, but they turned out to be

There were tons of finger mullet everywhere, but surprisingly, nothing was biting. We tried another nearby spot and caught a few small snapper, but again, nothing worth keeping.
We made another move, this time to a spot south of the Harbor Isle condos. The pattern continued— plenty of short snapper but nothing to brag about. That changed when I hooked into something that put up a great fight—a 33-inch bonnethead shark. Not what we were after, but it was a fun surprise and a great fight on light tackle.
Around 10 AM, we pulled up anchor and started drifting back toward the South Causeway Bridge. Unfortunately, this drift only produced more catfish for Tania, though she did finally manage to land a small lane snapper before we wrapped up our morning.

October brought huge tides, flooding, wind and rain. Challenging at times but persistence is rewarded to anglers. Hopefully normal conditions will prevail soon.
Targeting snook along structures using live bait, great way to get drag screaming. DOA 5” jerk bait worked near docks and mangrove edges gets the linesiders chewing as well. As baits schools trickle into back bays and canals snook will follow and ambush the schools creating great surface strikes.
Tarpon action in bays and channels, get anglers bowing to the king. Live mullet freelined with tide creates strikes along with live pilchards drifting with tide. Tarpon like the incoming tide the and last of outgoing tide.
Bottom fishing has been best bet when tides are to high. Rock piles and wrecks produce a plethora of species for anglers. Great for kid amas those looking for consistent rod bending action.
The Palm beaches in November can moderate and cool temperatures. Cooler temperatures cool down water temperatures and predator fish begin to push into back bays, canals and coves.
Snook fishing in Jupiter and Palm Beach, will provide anglers steady
action along seawalls, mangroves shorelines and channel edges. Sight fishing on the flats is another option for those who enjoy watching the bite. A DOA C.A.L. 3” shad or DOA 3 “ shrimp presented in the right spot gets the drag screaming.
Tarpon migrate into back bays and canals offering excellent fishing for the silver king. Tarpon are prevalent inside the Icw, mangrove shorelines, docks and deep passes. Live shrimp drifted with the tide is the best bait, other baits like mullet, pinfish and greenies work as well. Artificial enthusiast, the deeper passes offer plenty of shots on DOA bait busters or DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail. Tarpon this time of year range from 10 to 60 pounds.
November offers great action for big jack cravelle on the ICW water ways. Jacks will pounce on Rapala skitter walks or live bait in the vicinity of seawalls, docks or open water flats. The jacks are schooling fish averaging 5 to 25 pounds. Battling jacks on light tackle or fly is something an angler will never forget, come experience the tussle yourself.

BoatUS Foundation Launches 2 New Safety Microcourses: Aids to Navigation Basics and Nighttime Boating Basics
SPRINGFIELD, Va., Oct. 14, 2025 – The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has launched two new boating safety microcourses to help boaters focus on issues important to safe navigation. Aids to Navigation Basics and Nighttime Boating Basics are the latest in a series of short microcourse offerings that help fit into any boater’s busy schedule. These courses are available at BoatUS.org/courses and are free to the public.
Aids to Navigation Basics is designed to help boaters understand the meaning of basic buoys and markers. The course also reinforces the importance of maintaining a proper lookout and consulting an up-to-date chart to navigate safely.
Nighttime Boating Basics addresses a common issue for recreational boat operators – operating after dark when navigation can be more challenging. The course teaches boaters how to prepare for evening outings, comply with boating regulations for reduced visibility, and recognize the proper use of navigation lights on recreational vessels.
“Annual U.S. Coast Guard statistics have shown that understanding AToNs and the challenges of nighttime boating are perennial issues for boat operators,” said Ted Sensenbrenner, Director of Boating Safety at
