• 1 pound Florida spiny
lobster meat, grilled and chopped
• Florida Romaine or Butter lettuce, shredded (or your favorite lettuce)
• ½ cup Florida celery, chopped
• Rolls, split in half
• 2 green onions, chopped
• ½ cup mayonnaise
• 1 tablespoon prepared Dijon mustard
• 1 teaspoon lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Preparation:
Heat grill to medium-high. Cut the lobster tail in half, leaving the lobster meat in the shell. Season with salt and pepper and grill for 2-3 minutes per side or until meat is no longer translucent. Remove from shell to cool and cut into bite-size pieces.
Combine the mayonnaise, mustard, lemon juice, Worcestershire, celery, salt and pepper, mix thoroughly.
Gently fold in lobster meat.
Fill rolls with lobster mixture and garnish with green onions. Serve chilled.

Catching Tampa Bay Reds
October is a great month for catching large redfish in Tampa Bay; although redfish are year long residents of the bay the large breeders prefer the mangrove shoreline. October water temperatures are a welcome relief after the long sizzling summer months and a turn on for the big bruisers.
A short trip to catch bait at my secret spot and from there it was off to Weedon Island, one of my favorite spots for large redfish this time of year. Once we reached the no motor zone, I lowered the trolling motor and with the push of a button 112 pounds of thrust from my JL Marine Power Move came to life propelling my 25 ft West End Bay boat in the direction of Weedon Island. In Tampa Bay’s protected areas, use a trolling motor or push pole and follow FWC regulations.
We slowly worked our way to the southeast point of the key and here we anchored and waited for the school to appear. Patience is important since school can appear in a moment’s notice.
We were prepared for action; one rod with live pinfish suspended just below the surface of the water using float the other one with greenbacks free lined just beyond our float and one with cut pinfish using a small split shot to keep the cut bait on the bottom.
The sun’s rays were slowly breaking into the clear water, and
you could see movements of small pinfish darting in and out of the grass and mullet starting to jump. I could tell by my clients look they were ready for action, and so was I. Just beyond our reach we could see a small wake as if a small boat had buzzed by. We looked at each other and without a word prepared for an attack. The reds were coming; Alice drew first blood and within a split second mine was next. Three hook ups and no one around to see it. We had them all ourselves for over 2 hours. We engaged in combat with the Reds, achieving victories in some encounters while facing defeats in others.

Offshore Fishing Report
Offshore fishing has been lively, and we’re wrapping up the last day of amberjack season tonight. The bite has been solid, and those lucky enough to hop on one of our longer trips have had a great shot at bringing in these hardfighting fish before the closure.
Beyond the amberjack action, red grouper and scamp grouper have been keeping rods bent for those working the deeper ledges and hard bottom. We’ve also been seeing consistent catches of mangrove snapper, with mutton and yellowtail mixed in to round out the box. Schools of porgies and vermillion snapper have added to the steady action, along with the occasional almaco jack to keep things interesting.
On top of the bottom bite, the pelagic scene has been exciting. Wahoo, tuna, and mahi have all been making appearances offshore, giving anglers a real shot at those big-water thrills while trolling or freelining baits. With cooler weather pushing in and water temps starting to shift, we expect these pelagic opportunities to stick around and even improve as we move deeper into the season.
Overall, it’s a great time to head offshore with Hubbard’s Marina to take advantage of the variety and quality of fish biting right now and plenty of fish able to be kept.
Large schools of redfish gather around mangrove islands; some schools are so large they create a visible wave as they move through the shallow waters of the flats. My favorite baits for these large bruisers are 3–5-inch pinfish, cut fresh dead pinfish and dollar size pass crabs. Casting distance is necessary and medium tackle works best. I prefer to use a 15- pound test FINS braided line, 7.6 medium fast taper rod and 3000 to 3500 reels for best casting distance.

Fishing Report
Near shore fishing around Hubbard’s Marina is shaping up nicely as we move into the cooler months. Hogfish are beginning to make a stronger showing, and we’re already seeing a few landed on our 10-hour all-day trips. With the arrival of cold fronts, we expect that action to build quickly as these prized fish school up on the near shore structures. Lane snapper have been steady and consistent, and we anticipate that bite to remain productive in the coming weeks.
Mangrove snapper have been a bit more hit-or-miss lately, but anglers working the deeper near shore waters are still finding solid catches overall. The seasonal shift will bring in larger live shrimp, which should give us an edge when targeting both hogfish and mangroves, compared to the smaller summer shrimp. Red grouper have been a little soft closer in, though those willing to push into the deeper stretches of our near shore grounds still have a chance to pick off one or two.
All in all, the near shore bite is improving with the changing conditions, and as water temperatures continue to drop, we’re looking forward to even stronger opportunities for hogfish, mangroves, and a variety of other species.
I like to fish for reds at the beginning of an outgoing tide since they get concentrated in cuts and potholes around the mangrove island, creating a prime casting spot for my clients. First, get there early ahead of the tide change. I sat and waited for an hour for the fish to move in and it was well worth it. While other boats are trying to follow the fish, let the fish come to you. Never cast into a school of fish. Always cast ahead of them and let them come toward your bait. On days with strong currents, I will use a float and let the current drift my bait towards the fish. My clients had a wonderful day and one they will never forget.

Snook action still continuing to be impressive along the beaches and in the passes. However, we were seeing a shift of that action to the back bays with the cooler weather but now that its warmed back up it will be interesting to see how the fish react the next few days. Either way, we should still have a few more weeks of beach and pass snook action before the fish completely retreat. The redfish action has been solid inshore lately as they start to really get concentrated up on the flats, oyster bars, and around the mangroves. Look for the big fat jumping mullet, birds or bait. Action will concentrate them and give them away too. Often you will find bluefish or jack crevalle schooling up with the redfish too this time of year. Trout action was already starting to slide up shallower with the cooler mornings, but the last few days warming trend may slow that shift. We have been seeing them solidly around the edges and deeper flats around 4-6ft. Also, at night the trout action has been solid around dock lights and bridge lights. Mangrove snapper action has been thick around the docks, piers, bridges and jetties. Already seeing some nice numbers of sheepshead sliding into those areas too!

Lake Toho Fall Fishing Report
Fall is here, and what comes with it? Good bass fishing on Lake Toho. As temps continue to come down, the bass are feeding more and more. Fall typically brings both good numbers of bass along with more consistent trophy size bass. They will begin to feed heavily and even start schooling on shad beginning sometime mid October and it will last through mid December. This is the BEST and most consistent time of year to catch them off of topwater on Lake Toho.
With the bass schooling together in large groups and chasing bait, we tend to catch very good numbers. Depending on the days weather, 20 to even 40+ fish days are not uncommon. And if you’re using shiners, once you run out,
you can usually just keep the catching going by throwing some artificials in the same area.
For artificials, we’re typically focusing on offshore grass holes and shell beds where the bass on Lake Toho school up. Once you’re in one of these areas with a large group of fish, it’s usually pretty easy to catch them. A number of different lures will work, topwater spooks, whopper ploppers, jerkbaits, flukes, rattletraps, spinnerbaits, and even trick worms on the bottom will all catch fish. It just depends on what mood the fish are in. If they’re busting on top, use topwater, if they’re not wanting to surface as much, a jerkbait, fluke, or worm may do the trick.
And as I mentioned earlier, trophy sized bass begin to be

The snook fishing is excellent this month as mullet schools roam our local waters. Seawalls, docks and bridges great areas to target snook. As water temperatures decrease snook migrate into back canals and bays creating great sight fishing opportunities for anglers.
Tarpon aka “Silver King” abundant in our local waters this time of year. Schools of tarpon flood into back bays and deeper cuts in search of bait schools. The tarpon early morning and late afternoon can be seen rolling on the surface offering sight casting opportunities for anglers. DOA bait buster shallow runner in holographic / black back and glow gold / rush belly awesome artificial bait for tarpon. If artificial
lures is not your choice live mullet or greenies free lined with the tide excellent choice for anglers to get hooked up.
The Intercostal waters from Jupiter to Palm Beach offer a plethora of species to target. Jacks, sheepshead, sharks, tripletail, mackerel, ladyfish and even the pesky bluefish are prevalent all through are local area. Find structure or bait schools and the predator fish will be there ready to eat.
Mullet schools are still trickling through the local area and the rain has been persistent in the afternoons.
As the mullet migration continues to push through the Palm beaches. Tarpon can be
caught more consistently. This is because the main reason for all this feeding is to prepare for the upcoming winter time spawn. And as the fall progresses the female bass will begin to fill up with eggs until they’re at their biggest weight of the whole year.

Snook have been abundant all through the intercoastal waterways. Fish areas with points and moving water typically you can find snook. Docks, bridges and mangrove shorelines also great areas to locate the line insiders. Live bait hooked through the nose triggers great strikes. Rapala skitter V top waters an awesome bait to create explosive strikes on the surface.
Channels and bays have been abundant with schools of jack, mackerel, bluefish and ladyfish. All these fish are willing to take live bait and artificial baits like a Doa 3 shad tail. Baits worked on the bottom, catch snapper, drum and maybe a flounder or two.

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. Boat America Classes:
The Clearwater Flotilla is also pleased to announce the schedule for Boat America classes in 2024. These classes provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of boating safety, navigation rules, and emergency procedures. SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license.
