Influenza A Influenza A continues to circulate across the Wakatipu, with many local families experiencing coughs, fevers, sore throats, body aches, and fatigue. While most people recover well, influenza can cause more serious illness in young children, older adults, and those with underlying health conditions. Simple steps can help protect our community: stay home when unwell, get plenty of rest, keep hydrated, practise good hand hygiene, and consider wearing a mask if you need to be around others. Vaccination remains one of the best ways to reduce the risk of serious illness. Importantly, flu vaccinations are now free for all children aged 6 months to under 5 years, reflecting the impact influenza has had on young children this season.
spring flower show returns Spring is in the air, and the Arrowtown Horticultural Society is getting ready to celebrate with its annual Spring Flower Show at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall. This year’s theme is “Flower Power”, taking inspiration from the colourful and vibrant spirit of the 1960s and 1970s. The show will feature an impressive display of spring flowers, crafts, baking, photography and children’s entries. Visitors can also browse the ever-popular Plant Stall, offering a wonderful selection of local plants, seeds and flowers. Be sure to arrive early, as the stall is always a favourite. The Sustainability Stall will offer an eclectic selection of bric-a-brac, giving pre-loved items a new lease of life, while the raffle will feature some great prizes generously donated by local businesses. The popular café will also be back, serving delicious morning and afternoon teas with a 1960s and 1970s twist. The Spring Flower Show runs Friday 25 September, 12pm–5pm, and Saturday 26 September, 10am–3pm. Admission is $5 for adults, with children free. Café treats are $6 for adults and $3 for children. Entries for judging must be delivered to the Athenaeum Hall on Thursday 24 September between 2pm and 7pm. Entries cannot be accepted before this time or on the morning of the show. arrowtown village association news arrow river flooding
The Arrow River flooded heavily the night of Thursday 27th August. This has altered the river flats below the village considerably with the rivers flood bund washed away. Otago Regional Council who manage waterways have no current plans to reconstruct the bund and will conduct some remedial work in the coming weeks. QLDC and Queenstown Trails Trust will repair damaged trails in due course with work required right across the district. “ridgeburn” – morven ferry road
The Ridgeburn “fast track” proposal at Morven Ferry Road continues to attract extensive media coverage alongside other proposals locally and nationally. Queenstown Smart Growth Initiative are mounting a credible response opposing the development with a range of experts who will have 20 days to make a case when the substantive application is lodged soon. 1200 homes and approximately 3000 residents will be introduced 5 kms from Arrowtown, the negative impact that will have on the village as well as traffic should be clear. This spring we’ll be raising beech, Hall’s tōtara, kōwhai, ribbonwood, flax, cabbage trees and other native species for future planting projects around Arrowtown. We’d love your help! No experience is needed – we’ll provide the tools and show you what to do. Come for a whole session or just lend a hand for an hour. shorter outside lines Outside lines is an exhibition in which a group of six artists transcend their familiar practices to embrace experimentation and push the boundaries of what their audience expects to reveal compelling new directions in their work. The Artists are all Whakatipu locals, with established practices and are well known in the Arts scene. They have taken this opportunity to push the boundaries of what they do and take it Outside their Lines of material, subject, skill, and meaning. The group includes two painters, Emma Peers and Andie King, Susan Cleaver, a Conceptual Photographic Artist, and three who work in three dimensions, Jasmine Clark, a contemporary basketmaker and sculptor, potter Louise Parker, and contemporary jeweller Anna Claire. The exhibition opens on the 10th of September at 5:30pm at the Lakes District Museum in Arrowtown and will run for 5 weeks. The Artists are grateful to the Central Lakes Trust and Creative Communities for their support. 8
