matariki 2026 Arrowtown School is inviting whānau and the wider community to come together for an afternoon of celebration, on Wednesday 1st July, as students showcase their learning and performances for Matariki. The event begins at 3pm, with families and visitors arriving to join the festivities after students have spent the day taking part in Matariki activities alongside classmates from across the kura. An official welcome and karakia will take place from 3.10pm, led by Gemma and Cory Ratahi, before students take to the stage for a series of Kapa Haka performances. Preschool tamariki will join the opening karakia, followed by performances from Kā-muriwai Year 0–2, Years 3–4, Years 5–6 and Years 7–8. One of the afternoon’s highlights will be the lifting of the hāngi at 4.20pm, with visitors then invited to enjoy an evening of kai, culture and connection. A Matariki mā Puanga kōrero by Gemma Cribb will follow, while families can explore the Matariki exhibition in the hall and take part in a star-hunting activity around the school grounds. There will be plenty of food available for purchase, including hāngi plates, hot chocolates and baking, alongside boil-up, fry bread, sausages, burgers and s’mores. Proceeds from food sales will go back to the participating centres to support kaupapa Māori initiatives. The celebration wraps up at 6pm and promises to be a special opportunity for the community to reflect on Matariki, celebrate local culture and enjoy an evening together. 33

Works to construct a new path across Marshall Park at the top of Buckingham Street, have been halted. A revised plan will see the path gravelled over the winter and the grass will be reinstated in the spring. Instead, a new path will go around the perimeter of the park connecting the entrance ways. clear air

Smoke gets trapped against the hill side and is worst south of Devon Street and at the eastern end over Tewa Banks. Please ensure firewood is clean and dry, avoid burning coal, rubbish, treated timber, plastics or garden waste. Smouldering fires overnight also amplifies the problem. tewa banks nearing completion With 41 homes now completed and just 27 remaining, and the team expects all work on site to be finished before Christmas. The development is already home to a diverse mix of residents, including seniors, singles, couples and families, with a massive community vibe there already and a positive response from new homeowners with great support from the wider Arrowtown community. Environmental work has also been a focus, with local organisation Mana Tāhuna undertaking extensive planting along the embankment areas. This planting is mainly native grass, Poa cita, with a mix of shrubs throughout to support stability, biodiversity and long term growth across the site. The river reserve, which was cleared last year, is now being maintained by Queenstown Lakes District Council, helping to enhance public access and the natural environment. The project team is also delighted to have the Arrowtown Community Nursery and Choppers operating from the upper corner of the site, adding to the area's community feel and creating a welcoming hub for locals. While applications for homes have now closed and the final allocation process is underway, the development continues to attract interest as one of the district’s significant community housing projects. arrowtown school report Arrowtown School students have had a busy few weeks, with our junior school thoroughly enjoying a visiting performance from the NZ Playhouse, who entertained the juniors with their play Puss in Gumboots. On the sports field, Arrowtown students represented the school brilliantly at the local Wakatipu Rippa Rugby competition, with one of the highlights being a final clash between the Year 5 and Year 6 boys teams! There is more Rippa Rugby this week with the Central Otago champs in Wanaka. Our writing curriculum continues to evolve and this has been a great focus this term, with students and teachers showcasing their learning to the senior leadership team and the Board of Trustees.
