four decades of festivals
The town has officially wrapped up the 2026 Autumn Festival, and by all accounts, the milestone 40th anniversary was an absolute cracker that brought the community together in true historic style. Blending beloved decades-old traditions with fresh excitement, the event proved that four decades on, Arrowtown still knows how to throw a festival for all to enjoy.
The milestone year called for something special, and the festival delivered in spades.
A spectacular Fireworks Night lit up the crisp autumn night, providing a dazzling and fitting tribute to forty years of community spirit. In a nod to festival history, the iconic Beard Competition was resurrected this year. The entries did not disappoint, drawing crowds to witness some truly magnificent, locally grown facial foliage that would have made the town's original gold-mining pioneers proud.
Of course, the pinnacle of the weekend was the annual street parade. The old festival adage proved true yet again this year, demonstrating that it truly never rains on the Arrowtown parade. Under clear skies, the procession was a smashing success and the Horticultural Society took first prize with their float. Buckingham Street was packed to the brim with spectators cheering on a vibrant display of creative floats, lively music, and community groups, creating an unforgettable afternoon atmosphere.
An event of this scale simply does not happen without an immense amount of community backing. Local businesses and groups went above and beyond this year.
A massive debt of gratitude to everyone who took part, volunteered, and decorated. In particular, a huge thank you must go to the hardworking festival committee for pulling off yet another seamlessly executed year. If this year’s festival was anything to go by, Arrowtown’s autumn magic is locked in for another forty years to come.

ramshaw lane bus stop
In September 2025, a temporary bus stop was installed on Ramshaw Lane after the original stop, by the entrance to Hansen Reserve Car Park, was deemed unsafe by bus operator, Ritchies. The new location, overlooking the skate park, required the removal of 8 car parks, with 3 later retained for small cars. Since then, the AVA and APBA have worked with QLDC, ORC and Ritchies to explore alternative permanent options. However, a Stantec independent review concludes that the current temporary location offers the best overall balance of safety, accessibility, operational efficiency and town-centre connectivity. The stop has not worked well in its current informal state, with cones, gravel surfaces and retained parking preventing buses from pulling fully out of traffic. If the site is properly levelled, formalised and upgraded, it is likely to become the preferred permanent bus stop later this year.

The AVA have been exploring safety issues at the entrance to Arrowtown. The intersection of Arrowtown-Lake Hayes Rd, Berkshire St, Malaghans Rd and McDonnell Rd has often been the site of accidents caused by speeds and confusion over priority. Crash data has been hard to source and inconsistent across agencies. The AVA recently installed a sound monitor which recorded 6 car horns warnings in one day alone. Whilst we are a long way from a solution, we wonder how the community would feel about a roundabout about at this junction?

A sharp new theatre production with a timely message is heading to Arrowtown next month, with Social Animal set to hit Athenaeum Hall on June 19, 7.30pm. Tickets $20 at humanitix.com.
The one-man show stars acclaimed New Zealand actor Stephen Papps and tells the story of Joe Quigley – a once-beloved TV detective whose life unravels after a careless comment destroys his public image. As Joe struggles to rebuild his life, he unexpectedly finds companionship in a nervous former racing greyhound and a quirky group of local dog walkers, leading him on a journey of self-discovery far from the spotlight. Presented in association with Greyhounds as Pets, the production also shines a light on the future of racing greyhounds in New Zealand ahead of the industry’s planned closure in July 2026, when thousands of dogs will need homes beyond the racetrack.
Social Animal sees Papps take on a wide range of characters –both human and canine – in what has been praised as a standout solo performance.

Arrowtown School had a great day at the inaugural Wakatipu Schools Football Tournament earlier this month.
Ten Arrowtown teams took part, and Arrowtown won the year 5/6 boys, the Year 7/8 boys and the Year 7/8 girls sections.
