surprise - top opera soprano for february picnic opera A huge new signing for the event of the summer – on Sunday 8 February, Remarkables Picnic Opera. It’s Felicity Tomkins, who’s fresh off winning one of the world’s major aria contests. Taking the Herald Sun Aria (in its heavily hyped centenary, to boot) is a stunning achievement for the Kiwi soprano. Her conclusive win joined her name with opera royalty – the Dames Kiri Te Kanawa, Joan Sutherland and Malvina Major who's early careers were each boosted by winning the Herald Sun. Felicity, based in Europe and Australia,has a voice one critic described as “manuka honey.” This is the seventh picnic opera presented by the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society (ACAS) with Auckland Opera Studio. There are three other new signings; Jasmine Jessen, baritone Edward Laurenson, and tenor Jordan FonotiFuimaono. They join established favourites Amelia Berry (soprano), Ridge Ponini (tenor), and Jordan’s baritone brother Alfred. The programme brings the rich big voices of opera to a popular programme of well-known opera, and the best of modern musicals. So along with Puccini, Mozart, Verdi, and Dvorak, there are classics from the likes of Chess and Les Mis. The picnic opera has a heaven-sent audience setting, with The Remarkables mountain range back-dropping the stage, and the spreading lawns of the Stalker family’s Springpointer Gardens for comfortable seating. Gates open at 4 pm, with electric violinist Anna Morton performing at 4.45 pm until the curtain rises and again at the interval. arrowtown village association news A new year is upon us, and some significant decisions lie ahead for Arrowtown early in 2026. Urban Intensification
