summer reading challenge Join this year’s Summer Reading Challenge: Forest Quest. The natureinspired theme aims to encourage children to read over the summer holiday period and features prizes for every five books read. This year’s reading challenge was developed by Queenstown Lakes Libraries in collaboration with Whakatipu Reforestation Trust and Te Kākano. Prizes for young readers include a kōwhai seedling kit, stickers, and the Tree Tops card game – specially designed to showcase native plants which grow in our district. The Summer Reading Challenge is available for children of all ages. Pop into your local library to register a child and collect the first challenge card. The challenge runs from 1 December 25 to 14 February 26.
110th lake hayes A&P show The countdown is officially on and we’re gearing up for one amazing day out at the 110th Lake Hayes A&P Show. In just five short weeks, the shores of Lake Hayes will come alive with colour, community spirit, and all the magic of this iconic summer tradition. Get ready for a full day brimming with rural heritage, local flavour, and family fun. This year’s theme, Paddock to Pantry, shines a spotlight on our incredible local food scene, and we can’t wait for you to step into the all-new Lake Hayes Larder. Think artisan tastings, interactive foodie experiences, special guests, and live cooking demos. Kids are sorted too with the ever popular Queenstown Airport Kids Zone offering free, all day entertainment. Plus all the classics you love: equestrian and livestock action, over seventy trade stalls, live entertainment, the crowd favourite Hobby Horse competition, and plenty of space to relax, explore, and enjoy the atmosphere. We’re keeping things green, so bring along your reusable cups, bottles, and containers. And make the most of the free Park and Ride Shuttle from the Crown Pub & Beer Garden at Five Mile Centre Queenstown or cycle in using the managed SH6 crossing and free bike parking. arrowtown village association news macetown road
The Macetown Road managed access project is almost complete. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by the broad stakeholder group, which will see the implementation of a gate and permit system for vehicular access to Macetown. The intent is to safeguard public assess into the future, raising funds for track maintenance and providing accountability for responsible usage. The gate will be installed prior to Christmas but remain open, from mid to late January an online permit will be required to unlock the gate, in February the system will be fully operational with a paid permit required to unlock the gate and obtain access. $40 per 4WD or Motorcycle, $100 yearly permit for locals, horse riders (permit required) and trampers are free. freedom camping
Freedom camping came into effect at Arrowtown’s Hansen Place Car Park on the 1st December. 3 spots are available with parking permitted no earlier than 6pm and no later than 8am. If breaches are observed, the community is encouraged to use the Snap Send Solve App to report these instances. This will help monitor the suitability of this location until further review. swim club pushes on despite heating failure Arrowtown’s summer swim season is underway, though it’s started much chillier than anyone expected. Just two days before opening weekend, Arrowtown Swim Club and stakeholders were informed by QLDC that the Arrowtown Memorial Pool’s boiler had failed and would not be replaced for the 2025/26 season. The boiler, installed as a temporary solution during Alpine Aqualand’s upgrades, lasted only four years. Before that, the pool relied on an older solar-heating system, which, while limited, still provided some warmth for young swimmers. With both systems out of action, the pool is running entirely unheated, with water temperatures around 17 degrees. Despite this setback, the club committed to making lessons work safely, adapting schedules, supporting families, and ensuring children can still enjoy learning to swim. The club is actively working with QLDC and Arrowtown Ward representatives to explore interim solutions to heat the pool this season. QLDC informed the club that a new heating source is planned as part of an Energy Replacement Project next season, and that replacing the boiler this year isn’t feasible as it would only be used for an estimated nine weeks before being decommissioned. While this may make sense from an asset perspective, leaving the community pool unheated this season is unacceptable, as it serves not only Arrowtown but the wider region. Immediate action is needed to ensure the pool remains usable and safe for local children. “Arrowtown Swim Club is determined to make this season count for our kids,” says club secretary Airini Edmunds. “The lack of heating is far from ideal, but the spirit of our swimmers, families, and volunteers has been incredible. The kids were grinning from ear to ear on night one, cold, but loving it.” “After a lot of disappointment, we're really looking forward to the solarpowered heating next year,” adds Club President Hana Jones. “Having a consistently warm pool will be a game-changer. The swim club has been part of the community since 1969, and this investment ensures it remains a valued local asset for years to come.” Lessons run December to February for children aged 4 to 13. strange goods preloved fashion market returns Arrowtown shoppers are in for a treat this December, with the Strange Goods Market popping up at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall on Sunday, 14 December. Running from 9am to 3pm, the market will offer a relaxed, sustainable shopping experience, with a wide range of quality pre-loved clothing and unique finds — all at affordable prices and just in time for Christmas. the arrowtown community nursery is almost open! On Saturday, 18 October, we celebrated the Arrowtown Community Nursery's opening and thanked the sponsors and volunteers who made it possible. Since then, the Arrowtown Choppers team has been finalising preparations to get the site ready for productive planting. Once operational, the volunteer-run nursery will grow up to 8,000 native trees each year for planting in the hills around Arrowtown, adding to the 30,000 beech trees already established. The nursery is located in the new Tewa Banks development, next to the golf course off Jopp Street. Please note the area is still under construction — no “nosies” just yet. Keen to help?
