beech party An amazing day was had in conjunction with The Arrowtown Choppers planting day, with at least 120 members of the community turning out to help plant 2000 trees on the Sawpit Gully Track. All in all, over 6,000 trees have been planted over the years. In fact, it was only 4 years ago that this area was covered in wilding pines, so these Arrowtown Choppers clearing, and planting days have certainly made a difference. A big thankyou goes to, Trees That Count, Postmasters Cottage Cafe, Patagonia Chocolates, The Remarkable Sweet Shop, Arrowfield Apartments, Four Square Arrowtown, Arrowtown Bakery Cafe and all the other awesome local Arrowtown businesses for helping make this happen. Over the summer months the Arrowtown Choppers meet up on Thursday nights to clear wildings from the Sawpit Gully area and anybody is encouraged and welcome to go along. Incredible as it may seem, approximately 100 hectares of back country has been cleared of wilding pines by the Arrowtown Choppers, which has all been done during volunteered time, a great effort by all concerned.

With the end of the year rapidly approaching, the AVA has planned its AGM for the 28th of October at 7:30pm. This will be held in the community rooms next to the tennis courts in the Arrowtown campground. Willy from the Queenstown Trails Trust will be speaking about all the different parts of the wider trail network that are either in progress or at the planning stage. This includes the Coronet Loop trail, the planned trail from Arrowtown through towards Arthur’s Point in parallel with Malaghan’s Road, and the future links to newer trails in Central Otago. We will also update people on the councillor ward determination for Arrowtown and the formation of the Community Response Group as a separate entity to the AVA. As part of the AGM, the AVA is always looking to ensure good representation of the wider community. If
you or anyone you know is interested in joining the committee, please get in touch. All the details are on the AVA website, or you can email chairperson@ arrowtownvillage.nz. The AVA is active in several areas including environment projects around clean air and weed control/replanting, community projects, and communicating with council over a range of relevant issues to Arrowtown. No previous experience is needed, and people are encouraged to put their names forward to join the committee. We meet once a month on the 4th Thursday evening.

local golf comps On Sunday the 2nd of October the Arrowtown Golf Club held the 36 Hole Lakes District Championship. On a fine day and with a record 92 entries, the scoring was quite exceptional. The course was at it’s best for the Championship and congratulations must go to the Superintendent and his staff for the way the course was presented. Winner of the Championship was Mathew Tautari with a winning Gross score for the 2 rounds of 131. As well as Mathew’s great scoring PGA Professional James Anstiss shot a course record of 64. let’s eat! knowhelp yourlet’s local Anne Murchison has been involved with quilting and knitting most of her life. Anne’s mother was a tailoress and from an early age Anne was making her own clothes. Anne’s journey to Arrowtown has been via Dunedin and Blenheim where she has owned both knitting and quilting shops. In Mosgiel she opened Wool’n’Stitches in 1993, while in 2006 in Blenheim it was The Quilters Barn that Anne turned into one of the most well-known quilting shops in the country. During this time Anne had several quilts accepted for international and national competitions. She continues to run classes for both knitting and quilting. It was in 2012 after a visit to family in Queenstown, that Anne and her husband Tim thought of the idea of opening a Quilt Shop in Arrowtown. In September 2012 Anne and her husband took over the lease of the old Pannikans Café building in the Coachman’s Hall. Anne remembers gutting all the fixtures and fittings in the building and finding all sorts of dead rodents under cabinets
and benches. So it was in Labour Weekend 2012, The Stitching Post was opened for business and Anne started her new life with Arrowtown and the people of the area. The Stitching Post is now located down the street a way in the old Harcourts building opposite the Village Green. Through the years Anne has been involved with many organisations including the APBA, of which she was a member for several years. Now approaching retirement, Anne would like nothing better than to have time to continue knitting for charity and her 11 grandchildren scattered around New Zealand and in Adelaide in Australia.
