fireworks The Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade are excited to celebrate Guy Fawkes night with a plethora of visual delights. Funded by firewood sales and donations from our very kind local business support. There will be coffee, food, ice cream and the Scouts’ sausage sizzle for the masses. Fireworks start when dark, at about 20:45/21:00. Please dress appropriately for the occasion! Most importantly, remember that if you have pets, fireworks season can be terrifying for animals. one night, one pub, TWO actors Sahara BreeZe brings their second play 'TWO' to Arrowtown's Community Centre 13 & 14 November. Blaise Barham tells us more... Having loved the experience of touring 'Dear Lupin' last year with my father, John (86), with a play that looked at father-son relationships, I really wanted to tour a play with Sarah, my wife of 22 years. We chose 'TWO' as it is about love and the couples that we play explore different aspects of love. There's the bantering and bickering of the landlord & landlady, the lamenting of the 2 elderly pensioners, the eccentricity and simplicity of Fred & Alice, the flirtation and jealousy of Moth & Maudie, the controlling of Roy & Lesley and the female lust of Mrs Iger and the regret of the 'other woman'. Despite the difficulties, the couples keep battling on and love triumphs in the end with a few giggles on the way!!! We liked 'TWO' because Jim Cartwright's writing is really honest and the 14 characters that we play are so interesting, real and funny. At the same time we can laugh at ourselves as we recognise some of those traits in ourselves and others. 'TWO' opens at Arrowtown Community Centre from 8pm on 13 & 14 November. arrowtown business news It’s no secret – Arrowtown is officially New Zealand's Most Beautiful Small Town Our business community is thrilled with last week’s award as years of community and business advocacy for the heritage and environment in Arrowtown paid off. The Beautiful Awards celebrate the environmental excellence of communities, businesses, schools and individuals in New Zealand. Arrowtown demonstrates sustainable and environmentally conscious behaviours across four key areas: Litter Prevention and Waste Minimisation, Community Beautification, Recycling Projects and Sustainable Tourism. The last phase of judging was completed by Keep New Zealand Beautiful CEO Heather Saunderson and wellness author Rachel Grunwell. Our case showed the community is founded on the natural environment and the unique blend of old and new, with repurposed heritage buildings dwarfed alongside magnificent trees. Belonging in a caring community, the joy of living and working in Arrowtown, and the blend locals and visitors all had strong impact. Ward Councillor, members of the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association (APBA), and Arrowtown Village Association put together the case for judging with a video voiced by locals available on YouTube. The council-led waste management work no doubt contributed to the case. The APBA walks the walk, as shown in the recent donation $4,000 from their Long Lunch proceeds to the Arrowtown Preschool for nature based programmes. These involve 40 children learning about the natural world and sustainability in local reserves. The APBA has put aside the $4,000 balance of the Long Lunch proceeds to assist the proposed Jopp Street Community Nursery. This year’s 4 December Long Lunch proceeds will again be given to local community initiatives. It’s a win-win for residents and visitors alike as the business association supports community initiatives and adopts environmental values into our business practices making for best experiences for all. thank you arrowtown! Wow, 200 editions of The Loop! It makes me so happy to see our little publication still enjoyed by locals. I began the Loop after moving to Arrowtown, nearly 10 years ago, as I really struggled to find details of local businesses, what was happening around town and when events were on. The Loop has covered so many landmark occasions right from the very first edition, with the 150 years celebration, where the whole town got involved with reenactments at both school and on the banks of The Arrow with 8
a typical mining scene playing out. This featured horses, miners and the Buckingham Belles, an amazing event to be a part of. Then there have been many shows, musicals and festivals over the years. This small town has always got something going on. No wonder Arrowtown has just been officially recognised as 'New Zealand's Most Beautiful Small Town'‌ which we already knew it was. The support from local businesses has always been amazing, The Loop would not be able to operate without them.

rail land - anthonie tonnon Take a journey of the mind, through song and story, about New Zealand’s on and off again love affair with its passenger railway system. Arts on Tour and Creative Queenstown bring you Rail Land on Saturday 14 November at the Athenaeum Hall at 7.20 pm. Equal parts tragedy, comedy, and personal memoir, Rail Land weaves the songs of Anthonie Tonnon with custom material written for the show, historical letters to the editor, and meticulous notes on the railway systems of New Zealand. Our railway lines, bus and ferry networks are miraculous, poetic, and mysterious things. The are gifts from the past to the future, and if they didn’t exist now, they would be impossible to build from scratch. Each has a story, and Rail Land aims to tell a little of each one. The show also travels with an exhibition of historic NZ Rail advertising department posters and schematic maps, blown up to large scale. If you're coming from outside of Arrowtown, how about taking the Orbus to Rail Land: Number 2 to Arrowtown from Stanley Street Bus Hub at 6:35 pm, and Frankton Bus Interchange at 6:50 pm.
