Remarkable Theatre are proud to present COSI by Louis Nowra, 10-19 September at Arrowtown’s Athenaeum Hall. COSI is set in Australia in 1971 inside a Melbourne psychiatric facility. The patients are preparing a performance of Mozart’s famous comic opera, Cosi Fan Tutte. Unfortunately no one can act, sing or speak Italian! Lewis, their novice director, has his work cut out with them. Whilst all of this is happening, outside the institute Australia debates the Vietnam war. COSI is a hilarious and moving play, filled with delightful and outrageous characters each battling their own demons. One of the endearing characters is Henry, played by David Cantwell of Arrowtown. Henry plays the bugle, an instrument David impressively has quickly learnt for this role. One of his character's traits that appealed to David was his respect for soldiers. Henry wears his father’s medals in the play and actor David is honoured to also be able to wear his own father’s WW2 medals on stage in COSI. This delightful gesture is ‘an outing for Dad’ which is befitting as David’s father co-founded the Alexandra Musical Society in the 1950s. Come and see how Henry and the other COSI characters transform during this play which has important messages about mental health and the transformative power of music and performance. COSI is a must-see. It will definitely make you laugh, and a lot more! A range of tickets are available from eventfinda.co.nz for the seven evening performances and Sunday matinee. arrowtown village association news clean air update
With some sunny days and warmer overnight temperatures it is great to find ourselves on the other side of winter. A spin off from this is not needing to light our wood-burners so early in the day resulting in less air pollution in our community. AVA recently submitted in support of the Ministry of the Environment’s proposed amendments to the National Environmental Standards for Air Quality (NESQA) in New Zealand. AVA shares the national aim of improving air quality in Arrowtown to ensure improved health outcomes for residents. However, we are also aware of residents’ concerns relating to not being able to afford to heat homes with alternatives to wood-burners. Amongst other requests, AVA prioritized a reliable source of affordable electricity. Remember to do your bit by using your burner efficiently with dry firewood and letting it get a good glow before damping down just a little. NIWA have been back in town supplementing the many outdoor monitors on lampposts with indoor monitors. Polluted air in your home can either be emitted from your own burner or enter your home from neighbouring properties. There are 16 of these available in town now. the rope swing Early in 2020 when the world was normal I drew “the rope-swing” for the Arrowtown autumn festival. Like most things in 2020 the festival was cancelled due to Covid-19. Rather than leave this drawing in a box for next year I decided to auction it here with all money raised going towards the child cancer foundation. If you’re fortunate enough to live in Arrowtown or you holiday here chances are you’ve seen an orderly queue of children waiting for their turn on the rope swing down by the river. If you have children under 10, it’s likely this is the very corner of the arrow river where you spend most of your summer. museum is here to stay The government infrastructure fund for funding for essential seismic strengthening and restoration work has been successful. Museum Projects Manager Jane said "We are so thrilled and one of the great aspects to come out of it is the amazing support we have had from the community. We can't wait to get started!" The museum has been operating for 72 years and is one of the cultural gems of the Queenstown Lakes community. It holds many of the district’s important records, documents, photographs, and family histories. The institution also runs a very popular art gallery space as well as a successful education programme. The museum is also the information centre for Arrowtown and operates the historic Arrowtown Post Office. This funding will ensure the museum’s survival into the future. Director David Clarke said it is a fantastic day for the museum but also a fantastic result for the district. He paid tribute to all those who have assisted and supported the museum behind the scenes to make this a reality. The project can begin as soon as building consent has been granted.
