Arrowtown Preschool's very popular ‘Matariki’ celebration is going ahead on Sunday 26 July starting at 4.30 pm on Buckingham Green. This is a simply magical evening that Arrowtown Preschool has hosted for several years, where the community comes together to welcome the Māori New Year. Performances by Arrowtown Preschool and Arrowtown School's new entrant class and Kapa Haka Group will once again delight the crowd, along with live music kindly sponsored by Bendix Stables. While this event is mainly a chance for a community celebration, it is also a way for Arrowtown’s very special community Preschool to raise much needed funds.
If you’ve not yet visited The Winery, in Ramshaw Lane, you’ll find that this is a wine store like no other. This is a relaxed place to taste and enjoy wines, somewhere to start the day with great coffee and a croissant, to enjoy one of their generous cheeseboards alongside tasty tapas and a place to explore the nearly 1,000 different wines they sell. You can serve yourself to over 80 of the wines, whiskeys, liqueurs, fortified wines and sake that are all available by either the taste, half or full glass using their specialised Wine Card system. Any of the wines can be purchased at retail prices by the bottle and for just $10 corkage make yourself comfortable and share the bottle with friends, served in Riedel glassware. If you’re feeling like a cold beer there are 20 by the bottle and the mulled wine or hot buttered rum will warm you up on these cold winter days. arrowtown village association news wilding control work
With the resumption of work following lock-down, residents will be aware of the sound of chainsaws as contractors have restarted on ground control of wilding conifers around the town. The AVA is thrilled to be making excellent progress on the work as outlined in the Arrowtown Wilding Strategy. The wilding species above Bush Creek are almost completely removed and now clearance on Tobin’s Face back towards the town is occurring. There may be intermittent delays on the tracks and we thank you for your patience as this important work continues with the help of our major funders: Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI), NZ Lotteries, Central Lakes Trust and Community Trust South. Watch for information on a spring planting day of exotic colour trees to extend the existing trial planting. It is also hoped to establish a community nursery to propagate native plants for planting around the town, and as a holding space for exotic trees for planting on Tobin’s Face. see some work that needs doing?

cellos of otago Arrowtown Creative Arts Society is back and delighted to present Cellos of Otago. So get out there and celebrate on 8 August. You will enjoy a rich, classical sound that only 10 cellos can bring when ACAS presents “Cello Meets Song,” ten, (we said TEN) classical cellos, provide the vibrating resonance that will flow through the Atheneum beneath one superb soprano. The noted cellist Dr Heleen du Plessis, directs Cellists of Otago, which brings together some of the South’s finest cellists, including several young newcomers. This wall of cellos appears with Soprano Rebecca Ryan – trained in Dunedin and London’s Royal Academy. Rebecca Ryan’s voice has graced the stages of some of the World’s finest Opera venues. Including the Sydney Opera House, Royal Festival Hall, and Wigmore Hall. ACAS committee member Faith Austin, who played in the NZ Symphony Orchestra’s string section for many years, describes what’s achieved when ten cellos and a soprano join forces as a totally rich, sonorous sound with the soprano floating above it. The program, which has received excellent reviews, includes a repertoire for cello ensembles, and operatic arias arranged for voice and cello. Villa-Lobos, Bachianas Brasiliera, Rachmaninov. We have delicious aperitifs and a cash bar from 5.15 pm, with the Atheneum concert commencing at 6 pm. Two hours with an interval. Tickets $35 members and $40 non-members and bring the kids for free. the daylight atheist The Daylight Atheist on in Arrowtown 25 July was an instant hit when it premiered in 2002. The Daylight Atheist by award-winning satirical cartoonist Tom Scott, stars Michael Hurst in a not-to-be-missed repertoire experience. Ageing Irish raconteur Danny Moffat retreats from the harsh light of the world to his bedroom. There, under hoardings of old newspapers and beer bottles, he sorts through a lifetime of memories and regrets, from growing up as a boy in Ireland, to the hopes and disappointments of immigration to New Zealand. Tom Scott’s wonderfully inventive and fiercely funny play is a stirring portrait of his father, a deeply flawed yet charismatic bloke. your flop-free recipe roast pork with autumn herbs and pears
2kg pork (approx) pork loin, scored and tied 1 onion, cut into wedges 1 small fennel bulb, roughly chopped 5-6 firm pears 2 lemons, sliced into rounds 6 bay leaves Bunch of fresh thyme Handful of sage leaves 2 tsps fennel seeds, crushed Drizzle of olive oil Salt & freshly ground black pepper Heat oven to 230°. Place the pork with very dry skin on a roasting tray. Season the skin all over with salt, then place in oven for 25 minutes. Once the crackling is looking good, turn the oven down to 190°. In another oven proof dish scatter the onion wedges and fennel. Remove the pork from the oven and set it on top of the onions. Keep the pears whole and arrange around the pork. Place the lemon slices in between the pears and scatter over the herbs. Season with salt and pepper, sprinkle over the fennel seeds and drizzle with olive oil. Return pork to oven and cook for 35 minutes or until the pork is cooked through and the pears are soft (but don't collapse). Remove from the oven and allow the pork to rest for about 10 minutes. Serve with crunchy roast potatoes, an autumn salad and warm juices from the roast. Serves 6 10
great start to the rugby season After a very late start to the season, Arrowtown Rugby Club have thoroughly enjoyed the return to competition. With teams in each of the junior grades and a girls only competition underway, the club are delighted to have a great family friendly atmosphere at their new clubrooms at Jack Reid Park. The Arrowtown Premier Bulls have started the season strongly and as last year’s Central Otago Premier Competition Champions they are working hard towards back to back titles in 2020. The team have been very happy to have a home ground advantage in their first three games of the season so far. To secure a home semi-final, they will be looking to win their remaining games against Alexandra (at Molynuex Park on 18 July), Upper Clutha (in Arrowtown on 25 July) and Matakanui and Maniototo (both away games in the weeks following). Local support from sponsors and supporters has contributed much to the success of the club to date. New club president, Amy Wilson-White said she had been overwhelmed by the continued support from local business post Covid-19 and by the willingness to contribute to the running of the club from across the community.
