This year the Arrowtown Autumn Festival has a new race challenge. In the Tobins Rush we’ll see how fast you can get up Tobins Track and back down again. Your time will be electronically tracked and Arrowtown’s first King and Queen of the Hill will be crowned. For something less demanding the 5 km Arrow River Dash is coming back for a second year, finishing again with a foamy water slide. Both events are on Sunday 19 April, go to arrowtown autumnfestival. co.nz to register.
‘Tattoo this on your partner’s forehead so you won’t forget it,’ says John Lapsley. ‘Cellos. Saturday 28 March.’ John is talking about an encounter with a richness of classical sound that only a few can experience. When the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society brings you Cello Meets Voice, the deep resonance of ten (yes ten) cellos will flow through the Athenaeum Hall beneath a superb soprano. Noted cellist Dr Heleen du Plessis directs Cellists of Otago, which brings together some of the south’s finest cellists, including several young newcomers. This wall of cello sound supports soprano Rebecca Ryan – trained in Dunedin and at the Royal Academy of Music. Rebecca’s voice has graced the stages of some of the world’s finest music venues, from the Sydney Opera House to the Royal Festival Hall in London. ACAS committee member Faith Austin, who played in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s string section for many years, struggles to find words to describe what’s achieved with ten cellos and a soprano. ‘Ten cellos create such a totally rich, sonorous sound,’ she says. 'Then the soprano floats above it.” The programme, which has received excellent reviews, includes a repertoire for cello ensembles and operatic arias arranged for voice and cello. Among the composers are Villa-Lobos and Rachmaninov. There will be canapés and a cash bar from 5.15 pm, with the concert starting at 6 pm. Tickets from eventfinda.co.nz and Arrowtown Pharmacy. 3
arrowtown village association news arrowtown wilding group
With our full funding target achieved for wilding removal behind Arrowtown, work has kicked off in earnest. The first stage of works is to remove wilding trees on Brow Peak above Eichardts Flat and within Sawpit Gully. Also over 60 people helped out at a community chop day in February. Over the next month ground crews will focus on the west side of German Hill and above Bush Creek, including clearing buffer strips around tracks, waterways and native bush. Already, the crews have removed over 8000 trees, including Douglas fir, larch, contorta and mugo. Part of German Hill not visible from town and away from the main tracks and waterways will be aerially sprayed in the next month (weather permitting). We’ll put up clear signage and have people on the tracks explaining what is going on. The work should be over within a day. Updates will be posted on the AVA Facebook page. predator free arrowtown
After three years, PFA’s trap network now extends from Coronet Peak ski field to the Crown Terrace. We’ve recently seen a lot of juvenile birds like tomtits and fantails, suggesting there has been good breeding success. We’re still getting traps vandalised, but less than before. If you want more native birds in Arrowtown, plant more native trees. We have booklets at the library and museum about what to plant – or check out Feehly Hill behind the cemetery to see what grows well. And if you don’t have space for your own trees, come along the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust plantings in April! Whitechapel Reserve on Saturday 4 April, and Bush Creek on Saturday 18 April. record season for swimming On Sunday 15 March the Arrowtown Memorial Pool will close its gates after what was its longest ever season, thanks to the gas water heating installed in September last year. With Alpine Aqualand closed for maintenance, the pool was also busier than ever. Last Friday Arrowtown Swimming Club celebrated the end of another fantastic season. Club president Deborah McLeod says the water temperature – a balmy 28°C – drew a record number of registrations and membership had to be capped at 85 children. ‘We had everything from complete beginners to superstars who swam 1500 m in the distance trials. Each and every child improved their strokes and their speeds, improving on their personal bests on each ribbon night.’

museum on shaky ground We’re lucky to have in Arrowtown one of the country’s leading small museums. The Lakes District Museum has served both visitors and the local community for 72 years but today it is facing a crisis. Over the decades the museum has become much more than a collection of dusty artefacts. It’s an archive of documents and oral history, it owns and runs the Arrowtown post office, it has a busy education programme. It’s a visitor centre, an art gallery and a place the community can come together. The problem is that the 1875 BNZ building, which houses much of the collection, needs major work to make sure it can survive a big earthquake. Seismic strengthening doesn’t come cheap and the museum must raise $3.5 million to make the necessary alterations, including interior steel and concrete and a new structural mid-floor. Along the way, the façade of the bank building will be returned to the original R A Lawson design, including reinstating the parapet. And the museum displays will be restored and some upgraded. As a registered charity, the museum relies on income from admissions, retail sales, grants, donations and bequests, and the work of volunteers, to function. That’s why they need your help to carry on. 1 Tbsp coconut oil 1 cup red onion, finely diced 3 Tbsp lemongrass, finely sliced 3 tsp grated fresh ginger 2 tsp crushed garlic 2 red chillies, thinly sliced 2 Kaffir lime leaves, sliced 1 can coconut milk 1 cup chicken stock 1 Tbsp brown sugar 1 Tbsp fish sauce 1 kg clams, scrubbed

lime and rice noodles for serving ¼ cup fresh coriander, roughly chopped ¼ cup basil leaves, roughly torn
In a wok heat the coconut oil and then add the onion, cooking until translucent and fragrant. Add the lemongrass, ginger, garlic, chilli and lime leaves and continue to cook for another couple of minutes. Add the coconut milk, chicken stock, sugar and fish sauce. Bring to the a rolling boil. Add the clams and cover with a lid. Cook for about 5 minutes or until all of the clams have opened. Discard any clams that have not opened. Cook noodles according to instructions. Add the noodles to the broth along with the herbs. Serve in bowls with limes for squeezing. Serves 4-6 10
