rozzie and the orchestra Queenstown’s Turn Up the Music Charitable Trust is bringing an interactive music concert for preschool and junior children to the Athenaeum Hall on Sunday 22 March. In Rozzie and the Orchestra, 10 members of the Dunedin Junior Orchestra plus an opera singer will perform. The audience will become part of the show as they sit around the orchestra to get the full vibes, and join in the music too. The concert, created by Dunedin entertainer Rozzie Manowitz, will inspire kids to engage with the fantastical world of music. Rozzie will soon be widely known as the presenter of a new preschool show to be aired on TVNZ 2. The TV show is produced by Mary Phillips, who is a trustee for Turn Up the Music. ‘We’re hoping to sell tickets to 300 young local families,’ says Mary. ‘I’m very excited that hundreds of kids will be experiencing orchestral music first hand!’ The concert promises to be a magical experience. ‘Young children love to move to music,’ says Mary. ‘And while they are having fun, this exposure to music can also improve their ability to learn.’ Turn Up The Music relies on donations to help improve the lives of young people of the Wakatipu. The TUM Music School provides music teaching and vocal training, performance opportunities, and music experiences. preschool seeks funds Arrowtown’s community preschool is looking for your help. Recently in response to overwhelming demand Arrowtown Preschool lowered the intake age – and a very enthusiastic uptake means they are now in urgent need of more space. As a not-for-profit preschool 100% of funding goes into teaching programmes and they rely on fundraising for any other projects. That’s why they’re looking to the generosity of the community to help them raise $100,000 to extend the building at Cotter Avenue to build much needed sleep rooms for the youngest children. sporting stars visit school Arrowtown School had a visit this week from some sporting superstars when NZPGA Champion golfer Ben Campbell and All Blacks Israel Dagg, Beauden Barrett and Damien McKenzie came down to meet the children. ‘The kids loved the visit,’ says Arrowtown School’s Vanessa Williams. ‘Not only did they get to ask all four accomplished sportsmen some burning questions (and received some great words of wisdom), but they got to have a golf training session and a match of Rippa Rush. The kids were then lucky enough to get various items signed (shirts, shoes, hats and even arms). It definitely was a Monday morning to remember!’

comedy magic for the whole family Brendan Dooley is on his way to becoming one of the world’s top young magicians. Last year he became the youngest ever recipient of New Zealand’s Top Comedy Magician Award. Luckily for us, on the road to the big time he’s stopping in at Arrowtown for a show specially adapted for children aged 4 to 12. MAYHEM! combines a unique blend of non-traditional magic, stunts, original quick-witted comedy and audience participation into the sort of performance that has made Brendan a favourite with thousands worldwide. Brendan Dooley’s MAYHEM! is brought to Arrowtown by Creative Queenstown and Arts on Tour NZ. The show will be Athenaeum Hall on Saturday 7 March at 4.30 pm and runs for about an hour. fibre artists exhibit at museum Following the departure of artists in residence Kate and Luigi Agnelli, the museum gallery’s next exhibition is another returning favourite. COOTS (Central Otago Outside the Square) is a collective of fibre artists from around Central Otago and the Queenstown Lakes District. ‘The Lakes District Museum & Gallery has hosted several COOTS exhibitions over the past few years,’ says Jane Peasey, ‘and the variety and creativity of the artists is always impressive.’ This year the collective will have a member in the gallery during the exhibition. ‘It’s always a bonus when artists are in the gallery during exhibitions,’ says Jane. ‘Visitors love talking with the people who create art and hearing about their inspiration, motivation and techniques.’ Visions: Fibre Art by COOTS artists opens Friday 6 March. 8

your flop-free recipe cauliflower rice with spiced cashews
1 medium cauliflower 1 Tbsp coconut oil 1 red onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic fresh ginger 1 Tbsp black mustard seeds 1 Tbsp curry powder salt and black pepper 100 g cashew nuts a little honey pinch garam masala fresh coriander, chopped zest and juice of lime or lemon Chop cauliflower into large chunks and put them in a food processor. Pulse until the chunks form a ricelike texture. In a large frying pan, heat the coconut oil and cook the onion for 5 minutes or until softened. Chop the garlic and grate the ginger, adding to the onion. Add the spices and season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the cauliflower and cook until it starts to brown. In another pan toast the cashews until lightly browned then add a little honey and sprinkle with the garam masala. When the cauliflower rice is browned all over, spoon it onto a serving dish. Toss the cashews and coriander through and squeeze lemon or lime juice over, making sure to add the zest. This is delicious served when still warm but equally as good at room temperature. 10
