40 speed limit reduction Following on from last year’s trial, on Monday 10 February the speed limit within the Arrowtown Urban Boundary dropped to 40 km/h permanently. Signage was due to go up this week. Later this month there will be further consultation on dropping the speed limit in Buckingham Street, Ramshaw Lane and Arrow Lane to 20 km/h.
arrowtown teens triumphant Two Arrowtown students are standing proud after claiming a Coast to Coast title over the weekend. Jess McDonald and Sam Davis teamed up with fellow Wakatipu High School pupil Linus Ritchie of Wye Creek to take the trophy for fastest mixed three-person school team. Their time of 12:23:49 gave them 18th place out of the threeperson teams over all categories, good enough to make them the best mixed team of any age. All three put in a considerable effort to condition themselves for the event. Jess spent hours on local rivers to get the Grade 2 kayak qualification necessary to compete. Sam and Linus spent many hours mountain running. Over the last year they have also polished their race skills in a number of multisport events, including the Peak to Peak. In the race itself, Linus showed a clean pair of heels on the 30.5 km run up to Goat Pass, setting the team up for dominance on day two. Jess had a stand-out performance kayaking down the Waimakariri – while she always had confidence in her own abilities, she says her time confirmed her strong belief that girls have the measure of the male gender. Sam says his performance on the final bike leg also reiterated the benefits a Keith Crawford style ‘spag bol’ brings to any multisport athlete’s performance. The team raced to raise awareness of Mike King's I Am Hope campaign and they thank everyone who supported them getting to the start line.

autumn festival early bookings The Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival is not all that far away and registration has already opened for some events. Pie, Pint and Pinot doesn’t go on sale until mid March, but in the meantime here are a few other events to start thinking about. You’ll need to reserve your spot quickly if you want to test your general knowledge at the 70s themed Quiz Night on Thursday 16 April – this one is bound to sell out. Tickets are $60 for a team of four – register on the arrowtownautumnfestival.co.nz website. Now’s the time to start training for two fun running (or walking!) events on Sunday 19 April. The Arrow River Dash takes you from Wilcox Green around the river loop while the brand new Tobin’s Rush requires you to make it up Tobins Track and back. Register at activeqt.co.nz. Entries have also opened for two arts-related competitions. The Ray White Autumn Festival Art Exhibition at the museum gallery brings together the best of local art with a big cash prize for the premier award. Enter at museumqueenstown.com. big summer chop The Arrowtown Choppers’ Big Summer Chop, postponed from December after some dreadful weather, is now scheduled for Sunday 23 February. If you haven’t been involved before, it’s a family friendly outing to help remove wilding conifers from the slopes of Sawpit Gully. The work of volunteers is an important part of the Arrowtown Wilding Strategy, a project to stop the spread of wilding trees and preserve the unique character and biodiversity of the hinterland behind Arrowtown. You can hear a major update on the wilding removal stage of the Arrowtown Wilding Strategy, including news on funding and control methods. To get involved in the Big Summer Chop, meet at the Chinese Village at 10 am before heading up the hill. A barbecue lunch will be provided from 12 pm. Bring your own tools if you have them, plus extra drink/ food, appropriate warm clothes and sturdy footwear. Please remember weather conditions can change rapidly. extraordinary adventure extended As the end of their stay approaches, Kate and Luigi Agnelli tell us they have loved their second summer as artists in residence at the museum gallery. Visitors have enjoyed meeting the pair as they work side by side on their intricate drawings. Their previous work, including the popular Arrowtown and New Zealand forest series, is displayed in an exhibition called ‘An Extraordinary Adventure – Life’ and prints have found new homes all over the world. ‘We've also enjoyed providing a bit of inspiration for the local schools in the workshops organised by the museum education officer, Kelly,’ says Kate. ‘The children here have a lot of talent and their enthusiasm is infectious!’ During their stay Kate and Luigi have been working on two drawings inspired by nature in our area. When they are finished you’ll be able to view them on their website (landk.it). The couple have been having such a great time they have decided to extend their stay until Sunday 1 March. ‘It will be sad to say goodbye to Arrowtown and our museum family, who have become friends,’ says Kate. They will return to their home in Italy SPECIALISES IN: for an exhibition of one of their Interior | Exterior drawings at the Vatican. Then it’s Renovation | Wallpapering on to Israel and England…'Life is certainly an extraordinary adventure for us!’ 8

your flop-free recipe roasted duck salad
150 g baby beetroot 250 g baby potatoes 250 g duck breasts 1 tsp allspice 2 handfuls rocket 1 zucchini 1 nashi pear 90 g chopped walnuts 2 tsp red wine vinegar 2 tsp olive oil 50 g balsamic jus mixed with 1 Tbsp beetroot relish & 1 Tbsp water 50 g feta cheese and some fresh herbs for serving Preheat the oven to 200°C. Cut the beetroot into quarters and the potatoes into wedges. Place them on a tray and season, drizzle over some olive oil and roast for 25 minutes. Score the duck skin. Season on the flesh side and rub in the allspice. Heat a little oil in the pan and cook skin side down for 5 minutes, turn and cook the other side for another minute. When the vegetables have 5 minutes remaining, add the duck to the tray and roast for 5 minutes. Stand for 5 minutes. Toss the rocket, zucchini ribbons, pear slices and walnut pieces together. Drizzle over the vinegar and oil. In a pan, warm the balsamic jus with the beetroot relish and water. Bring to a simmer then 10
remove from heat. Slice the duck. Divide the vegetables on the plate, top with the rocket mixture and then arrange the duck slices on top. Drizzle the jus over and crumble feta and herbs. Serves 3–4.
